Problems that have more than one objective function are of great importance in engineering sciences and many other disciplines. This class of problems are known as multi-objective optimisation problems (or multicriteria). The difficulty here lies in the conflict between the various objective functions. Due to this conflict, one cannot find a single ideal solution which simultaneously satisfies all the objectives. But instead one can find the set of Pareto-optimal solutions (Pareto-optimal set) and consequently the Pareto-optimal front is established. Finding these solutions plays an important role in multi-objective optimisation problems and mathematically the problem is considered to be solved when the Pareto-optimal set, i.e. the set of all compromise solutions is found. The Pareto-optimal set may contain information that can help the designer make a decision and thus arrive at better trade-off solutions. The aim of this research is to develop new multi-objective optimisation symbolic algorithms capable of detecting relationship(s) among decision variables that can be used for constructing the analytical formula of Pareto-optimal front based on the extension of the current optimality conditions. A literature survey of theoretical and evolutionary computation techniques for handling multiple objectives, constraints and variable interaction highlights a lack of techniques to handle variable interaction. This research, therefore, focuses on the development of techniques for detecting the relationships between the decision variables (variable interaction) in the presence of multiple objectives and constraints. It attempts to fill the gap in this research by formally extending the theoretical results (optimality conditions). The research then proposes first-order multi-objective symbolic algorithm or MOSA-I and second-order multi-objective symbolic algorithm or MOSA-II that are capable of detecting the variable interaction. The performance of these algorithms is analysed and compared to a current state-of-the-art optimisation algorithm using popular test problems. The performance of the MOSA-II algorithm is finally validated using three appropriately chosen problems from literature. In this way, this research proposes a fully tested and validated methodology for dealing with multi-objective optimisation problems. In conclusion, this research proposes two new symbolic algorithms that are used for identifying the variable interaction responsible for constructing Pareto-optimal front among objectives in multi-objective optimisation problems. This is completed based on a development and relaxation of the first and second-order optimality conditions of Karush-Kuhn-Tucker.

The objectives of this thesis are to define novel symbolic representations and distance measures that are suited for time series that can be multivariate and non-stationary. In addition, they should preserve the time information, be interpretable, and fast to compute. We review symbolic representations of time series (that transform a real-valued series into a shorter discrete-valued series), as well as distance measures on time series, strings, and symbolic sequences (that result from a symbolization process). We propose two contributions: ASTRIDE for a data set of univariate time series, and d_{symb} for a data set of multivariate time series. We also developed the d_{symb} playground, an online interactive tool that allows users to apply d_{symb} to their uploaded data. ASTRIDE and d_{symb} are data-driven as they use change-point detection for the segmentation step, then either quantiles or a K-means clustering algorithm for the quantization step. Finally, they apply the general edit distance with custom costs between the resulting symbolic sequences. We show the performance of ASTRIDE compared to 4 other symbolic representations on reconstruction and, when applicable, on classification tasks. For d_{symb}, experiments show how interpretable the symbolization is. Moreover, compared to 9 elastic distances on a clustering task, d_{symb} achieves a competitive performance while being several orders of magnitude faster

Resumo:
Emotions and sentiments play a crucial role in our everyday lives. They aid decision-making, learning, communication, and situation awareness in human-centric environments. Over the past two decades, researchers in artificial intelligence have been attempting to endow machines with cognitive capabilities to recognize, infer, interpret and express emotions and sentiments. All such efforts can be attributed to affective computing, an interdisciplinary field spanning computer science, psychology, social sciences and cognitive science. Sentiment analysis and emotion recognition has also become a new trend in social media, avidly helping users understand opinions being expressed on different platforms in the web. In this thesis, we focus on developing novel methods for text-based sentiment analysis. As an application of the developed methods, we employ them to improve multimodal polarity detection and emotion recognition. Specifically, we develop innovative text and visual-based sentiment-analysis engines and use them to improve the performance of multimodal sentiment analysis. We begin by discussing challenges involved in both text-based and multimodal sentiment analysis. Next, we present a number of novel techniques to address these challenges. In particular, in the context of concept-based sentiment analysis, a paradigm gaining increasing interest recently, it is important to identify concepts in text; accordingly, we design a syntaxbased concept-extraction engine. We then exploit the extracted concepts to develop conceptbased affective vector space which we term, EmoSenticSpace. We then use this for deep learning-based sentiment analysis, in combination with our novel linguistic pattern-based affective reasoning method termed sentiment flow. Finally, we integrate all our text-based techniques and combine them with a novel deep learning-based visual feature extractor for multimodal sentiment analysis and emotion recognition. Comparative experimental results using a range of benchmark datasets have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

How and why do organizations approach greening? How can we conceptualize approaches and how can we encourage reflexive dialogues on them? These are the main questions addressed in this qualitative study on organizational greening. The study sets off by discussing matters of research philosophy, arguing that our trust in science ought to be revised and that a more postmodern and constructionist philosophy might be a way to go. This is then followed by a theoretical review, showing that organizational studies have a history in environmental issues, but that it is basically technocentric in orientation. A more reflexive organizational approach is suggested. The empirical part of the study is based on qualitative research of five case studies, representing a mix of organizations situated in Sweden, all with an explicit ambition to approach greening. The analyses target the organizations' approaches from practice to assumptions, pointing at the commonalities as well as the tensions. Basically, greening was an issue for all studied organizations, but an increasing pressure to market-orient their operations in line with the business rhetoric dominated their identity construction. The environment was included if there were opportunities of win-win situations between environment and economy in sight. Once embarked upon, the organizations tended to focus on technocratic practices, developing or implementing management systems, product development indexes, life-cycle methodologies and other tools. On a more philosophical level, in the study referred to as the worldview level, the approaches were predominandy characterized by a representative epistemology and a dualistic ontology, that is, they were clearly anthropocentric. With a base in these findings, an alternative approach is discussed as a way out, or as a way of constructing a reflexive dialogue on greening. This is partly based on the tensions within and between the cases, which encouraged reflections on how greening was approached. In the alternative, organizations are seen as actors on a symbolic agora where transparency, participation and self-reflexivity are keys to organizational legitimacy. This view frames organizations in the dominating approach as agoraphobic producers of materialistically dependent satisfiers. The alternative also targets the limits of a preference and materialistically oriented view on die satisfaction of human needs. Instead, it is argued that environmental and cultural sensitivity should be acknowledged as natural parts of organizational greening. This, however, demands more room for reflexive dialogues encouraging ontological awareness and a respect for more ecocentric views.

Climate change is a constantly debated issue in our society today, and most people seem to have a sense of awareness that we need to act urgently and make major changes in our lifestyle in order to decrease our impact on the climate. Despite the fact that climate change leaves few untouched and many individuals also claim to be both well informed and engaged in the climate issue, the commitment is not always put into action. This environmental sociological quantitative study intends to investigate whether different types of climate messages have an impact on the individual's attitude towards climate change at the time of exposure. The study also examines whether there are differences in the individual's socio-economic background that affect their self-rated climate commitment. In the study 140 respondents with varying background variables participated (age, sex, level of education, place of residence and income). Respondents who were divided into two experimental groups and one control group were asked to answer a digital survey with a quasi-experimental design.                                                                                                                The result showed that the different communicative approaches to conveying issues around the climate did not have an impact on the respondents' attitude towards climate change at the time of exposure. There was also no significant difference with respect to the respondents' climate commitment between the background variables residential area and level of education. However, the result showed a significant difference between men and women regarding estimated climate engagement, which is in line with previous research.

We consider the problem of predicting the direction of daily volatility changes in the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). This is accomplished by quantizing a series of historic volatility changes into a symbolic stream over 2 or 4 symbols. We compare predictive performance of the classical fixed-order Markov models with that of a novel approach to variable memory length prediction (called prediction fractal machine, or PFM) which is able to select very specific deep prediction contexts (whenever there is a sufficient support for such contexts in the training data). We learn that daily volatility changes of the DJIA only exhibit rather shallow finite memory structure. On the other hand, a careful selection of quantization cut values can strongly enhance predictive power of symbolic schemes. Results on 12 non-overlapping epochs of the DJIA strongly suggest that PFMs can outperform both traditional Markov models and (continuous-valued) GARCH models in the task of predicting volatility one time-step ahead.
In social work clients encounter arts in different contexts as in, for example, daytime activities, employment or job training. The participation in the activities may be voluntary or mandatory. This study examines how specialist crafts tutor work with creative activities in social work and the structures and attitudes necessary to provide conditions for change for the participant. The work places surveyed in this study all used creative methods involving visual arts such as paintings, ceramics, textile and sewing. The study´s purpose is to deepen the understanding of how visual creative activity is used to enable change for users in the field of social work. The activities evaluated in the study all use forms of visual creativity, which include various forms of creativity such as painting, sculpture, textile printing and sewing. The study was conducted based on a qualitative approach and the choice of method was unstructured focus groups with specialist crafts tutors. The method was extended during the research process by a telephone interview. In total, there were two focus group sessions and one telephone interview with a total of six informants. The theoretical framework from which creative activity is highlighted and analyzed is based on symbolic interactionism, where definition of the situation and sympathetic introspection are two key concepts. Other key concepts in the study are Axel Honneth's definition of recognition as well as Martin Buber's interpersonal encounters. The result of the study shows that specialist crafts tutors work contributes to change through structural and pedagogical approaches, which both are permeated by a process-oriented approach where the participant's own processes are central. In the final discussion the potential of creative activities for change within social work is discussed in relation to the theoretical concepts of interpersonal encounters, definition of the situation and symbolic violence to illuminate a choice between two approaches that social pedagogue faces.

In this work we present a symbolic calculus for ΨDOs on a smooth manifold M based on a suitable notion of the global phase function. In previous literature on the topic, either local coordinates or connections have been used to define the phase functions, symbols and oscillatory integrals defining ΨDOs. We obtain global formulae for the compositions and adjoints of ΨDOs. Applications are given to elliptic ΨDOs, boundedness on Sobolev spaces and functional calculus for elliptic ΨDOs.

In this work we study some dynamical properties of symbolic dynamical systems, with particular emphasis on the role played by the invariant probability measures of such systems. We approach the study of the set of invariant measures from a topological, combinatorial and geometrical point of view. From a topological point of view, we focus on the problem of orbit equivalence and strong orbit equivalence between dynamical systems given by minimal actions of Z, through the study of an algebraic invariant, namely the dynamical dimension group. Our work presents a description of the dynamical dimension group for two particular classes of subshifts: S-adic subshifts and dendric subshifts. From a combinatorial point of view, we are interested in the problem of balance in minimal uniquely ergodic systems given by actions of Z. We investigate the behavior regarding balance for substitutive, S-adic and dendric subshifts. We give necessary conditions for a minimal substitutive system with rational frequencies to be balanced on its factors, obtaining as a corollary the unbalance in the factors of length at least 2 in the subshift generated by the Thue-Morse sequence. Finally, from the geometrical point of view, we investigate the problem of realization of Choquet simplices as sets of invariant probability measures associated to systems given by minimal actions of amenable groups on the Cantor set. We introduce the notion of congruent monotileable amenable group, we prove that every virtually nilpotent amenable group is congruent monotileable, and we show that for a discrete infinite group G with this property, every Choquet simplex can be obtained as the set of invariant measures of a minimal G-subshift

One of the major challenges that persists in postsecondary foreign language (FL) education in the US today is how to implement a more integrated approach to language and literature instruction, that is, one that fosters critical awareness on multiple levels and prepares learners to be globally-connected and engaged citizens (MLA, 2007; Swaffar & Urlaub, 2014). Major contributions for achieving these goals have come from an array of pedagogical approaches that share in common their focus on language as a resource for making socially and symbolically rich meanings that do more than convey facts or express objectives. These include those designated as multiliteracies and genre-based approaches, as well as those that promote intercultural, symbolic and literary competencies as integral to the language learning experience. All of these frameworks acknowledge to some extent the fact that ambiguity-understood here as the multiplicity, indeterminacy, or destabilization of meaning-characterizes language itself and thus also our day-to-day and global communication, as well as the experience and process of FL learning. This dissertation, based on a qualitative classroom-based research study, considers how ambiguity can more be comprehensively integrated into FL learning and in particular into text-oriented teaching practices. The approach taken was a pedagogy that embraces ambiguity by providing learners and educators with strategies for navigating the moments of indeterminacy, uncertainty, and doubt that they will inevitably encounter in and out of the FL classroom. The study, set in an intermediate German language and culture course at a large public university, investigates 1) how to incorporate and assess moments of ambiguity more comprehensively across the curriculum and 2) how learners responded to various encounters with ambiguity, including ambiguity of genre, perspective, and silence. Data analysis revealed that purposeful integration of induced ambiguity can facilitate more comfort with those three dimensions and that it complements the principles of a multiliteracies-based FL pedagogy.

Service-oriented engineering is an emerging software development paradigm for distributed collaborative applications. Such an application is made up of several entities abstracted as services, each of them being for example a Web application, a Web service, or even a human. The services can be developed independently and are composed to achieve common requirements through interactions among them. Service choreographies define such requirements from a global perspective, based on interactions among a set of participants. This thesis aims to formalize the problems and attempts to develop a framework by which service choreographies can be developed correctly for both top-down and bottom-up approaches. It consists in analyzing the relation between a choreography specification and a choreography implementation at both model level and real implementation level. Particularly, it concerns the composition/decomposition service design, the verification, and the testing of choreography implementation. The first key point of our framework is to support value-passing among services by using symbolic technique and SMT solver. It overcomes false negatives or state space explosion issues due by abstracting or limiting the data domain of value-passing in existing approaches. The second key point is the black-box passive testing of choreography implementation. It does not require neither to access to source codes nor to make the implementation unavailable during the testing process. Our framework is fully implemented in our toolchains, which can be downloaded or used online at address: http://schora.lri.fr.

Due to the increasing complexity of reactive systems, testing has become an important part in the process of the development of such systems. Conformance testing with formal methods refers to checking functional correctness, by means of testing, of a black-box system under test with respect to a formal system specification, i.e., a specification given in a language with a formal semantics. In this aspect, passive testing techniques are used when the implementation under test cannot be disturbed or the system interface is not provided. Passive testing techniques are based on the observation and verification of properties on the behavior of a system without interfering with its normal operation, it also helps to observe abnormal behavior in the implementation under test on the basis of observing any deviation from the predefined behavior. The main objective of this thesis is to present a new approach to perform passive testing based on the analysis of the control and data part of the system under test. During the last decades, many theories and tools have been developed to perform conformance testing. However, in these theories, the specifications or properties of reactive systems are often modeled by different variants of Labeled Transition Systems (LTS). However, these methodologies do not explicitly take into account the system's data, since the underlying model of LTS are not able to do that. Hence, it is mandatory to enumerate the values of the data before modeling the system. This often results in the state-space explosion problem. To overcome this limitation, we have studied a model called Input-Output Symbolic Transition Systems (IOSTS) which explicitly includes all the data of a reactive system. Many passive testing techniques consider only the control part of the system and neglect data, or are confronted with an overwhelming amount of data values to process. In our approach, we consider control and data parts by integrating the concepts of symbolic execution and we improve trace analysis by introducing trace slicing techniques. Properties are described using Input Output Symbolic Transition Systems (IOSTSs) and we illustrate in our approach how they can be tested on real execution traces optimizing the trace analysis. These properties can be designed to test the functional conformance of a protocol as well as security properties. In addition to the theoretical approach, we have developed a software tool that implements the algorithms presented in this paper. Finally, as a proof of concept of our approach and tool we have applied the techniques to two real-life case studies: the SIP and Bluetooth protocol

Resumo:
This thesis is intended to be a comparative approach to Chinese theories of the literary symbolic by way of a comprehensive investigation of the term xing [Chinese symbol]. The xing has a long history of over two thousand years, is capable of protean meanings and generally considered very confusing. In the Introduction of the present work, a historical review of the study of the xing provides a map of the terrain in this area. Following this, a discussion of methodology is unfolded and suggestions are made that the general aim of this thesis is not to search for a "true" or "essential" meaning of the xing, but to examine how the word has actually been used in Chinese literary studies and to explore as much as possible its explicit and potential meanings. The ideal way of approaching an issue of this nature, the thesis suggests, would be a four-fold one, namely, the historical, descriptive, analytical and comparative approach. In this study, comparative approach is in the predominant position. The first part is designed to reveal the meanings of the xing and a number of other relevant terms. Through a descriptive analysis of the statements by major critics in various historical periods and by invoking Western theories of literature, the thesis discusses the multiple meanings of the xing, the intrinsic relationship between these meanings and the nature of poetic creation which underlies them. In the second part, a contour is drawn to demonstrate the mainstreams of Western theories of symbolism from Romanticism to Modernism. A number of important critics, such as Goethe, Coleridge, Carlyle, Mallarme and T. S. Eliot, are discussed and analysed, thus preparing the ground for an all-round comparison. The comparative study in this work is conducted in two ways: 1) Western theories of symbolism are applied to the interpretation of Chinese concepts and 2) Examples are presented to demonstrate the amazing similarities in the way Chinese and Western critics deal with the issue of the literary symbolic, so as to attain a better understanding of both. The xing not only has multiple meanings but its meanings also work on different levels. Hence, the comparison has to be a three dimensional one: xing is compared and contrasted with fu and bi, and these three terms are compared with parallel Western notions of sign, allegory and symbol; moreover, these comparisons are made on four levels - as rhetorical devices, as modes of writing, as aesthetic tendencies and as modes of interpretation. In the concluding chapter, a summary is given highlighting several major points at which the East and the West come closest and an attempt is made to reveal the underlying theoretical reasons.

A new approach is proposed which uses a combination of a Backprop paradigm neural network along with some perceptron processing elements performing logic operations to construct a numeric-to-symbolic converter. The design approach proposed herein is capable of implementing a decision region defined by a multi-dimensional, non-linear boundary surface. By defining a "two-valued" subspace of the boundary surface, a Backprop paradigm neural network is used to model the boundary surf ace. An input vector is tested by the neural network boundary model (along with perceptron logic gates) to determine whether the incoming vector point is within the decision region or not. Experiments with two qualitatively different kinds of nonlinear surface were carried out to test and demonstrate the design approach.

The onset or inception of organizational decline has been largely bypassed in management research over the past two decades, even though understanding this fundamental typology is key to mitigating organizational failure, while also providing important insight regarding how managers respond to phenomena that they may neither expect or understand. Understanding how managers observe, decide, and act in times of uncertainty, and how organizational culture and other factors may shape that environment, are important for scholars and practitioners alike to understand. This dissertation argues that corporate decline has largely been misunderstood from the perspective of onset or initiation; that the manager's decision-making process in times of decline must be considered in relation to the actual causes and factors associated with decline, and that the fundamental definition of organizational decline must be revised in light of advances in our understanding in management over the past three decades. This qualitative empirical descriptive study reviews literature regarding organizational decline with emphasis on the onset of decline, presents an equation for understanding a firm's propensity for decline, provides a revised definition of organizational decline, and examines the decision-making process of management when faced with decline based on symbolic interactionism theory.

Motion analysis deals with determining what and how activities are being performed by a subject, through the use of sensors. The process of answering the what question is commonly known as classification, and answering the how question is here referred to as characterization. Frequently, combinations of inertial sensor such as accelerometers and gyroscopes are used for motion analysis. These sensors are cheap, small, and can easily be incorporated into wearable systems. The overall goal of this thesis was to improve the processing of inertial sensor data for the characterization of movements. This thesis presents a framework for the development of motion analysis systems that targets movement characterization, and describes an implementation of the framework for gait analysis. One substantial aspect of the framework is symbolization, which transforms the sensor data into strings of symbols. Another aspect of the framework is the inclusion of human expert knowledge, which facilitates the connection between data and human concepts, and clarifies the analysis process to a human expert. The proposed implementation was compared to state of practice gait analysis systems, and evaluated in a clinical environment. Results showed that expert knowledge can be successfully used to parse symbolic data and identify the different phases of gait. In addition, the symbolic representation enabled the creation of new gait symmetry and gait normality indices. The proposed symmetry index was superior to many others in detecting movement asymmetry in early-to-mid-stage Parkinson's Disease patients. Furthermore, the normality index showed potential in the assessment of patient recovery after hip-replacement surgery. In conclusion, this implementation of the gait analysis system illustrated that the framework can be used as a road map for the development of movement analysis systems.

The thesis focuses on Bolivian Indians who are assimilated into ethnic groups as one of many consequences of the colonial past. An understanding of the complexity of this construction draws from disciplines such as Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Sociology, in an effort to expose the power relations behind the construction. Departing from written sources and the general belief that the area would lodge the most ancient of such Indians, the Uru from Lake Poopó, a specific location has been selected in the Oruro province of the mid Bolivian highlands. The province is named after this people. The identity of the Uru people has been established by reference to other Indians in the Bolivian Andes known as the Aymara or the Quechua. Colonial accounts written by the Spanish conquerors, including priests, soldiers and commoners, as well as modern sources are discussed and analysed. The fieldwork combines archaeological and anthropological methods. Finally, the importance of multidisciplinary approaches is discussed in an effort to contribute to an understanding of multi-cause phenomena in this case the constructed ethnic identity of the Uru people.

Video games have become the most popular leisure activity among children and adolescents. The increasing popularity of video games has urged researchers to determine the effects of video game playing on youngsters. Given the fact that most popular video games are violent in nature, much of the research has primarily focused on the correlation between playing video games with violent content and aggressive behavior in children. Most researchers have relied on previous media violence research, assuming similarities between television viewing and video game playing. However, video games are interactive media allowing the player to participate in the game scenario, which may intensify the impact of video game playing. Furthermore, the extent of possible influence by a video game may depend on the individual and environmental factors surrounding the player. This study examines the factors involved in video game playing within an interactive communication context. To achieve this goal, symbolic interactionism is used as a theoretical ground to explicate the interactive communication during video game playing. Once the pertinence of symbolic interaction theory to the player-video game interaction is demonstrated, the conceptual framework of symbolic interactionism is applied to video game playing. Based on the previous mass media models and symbolic interactionism, the interactive communication during video game playing is investigated. First, the individual and environmental factors surrounding the player are identified. Second, a theoretical model named "video game interaction model (VGIM)" is developed to examine how these factors affect the interactive communication during video game playing. VGIM illustrates the dynamics of the player-video game interaction and the relations among the variables contributing to this interaction.

In utilizing Kristeva's psychoanalytic discursive theory of identity-formation within literary symbolic structures, my thesis seeks to follow the ontological processes involved in identity and signification in “subversive” signifying practices. Specifically, I'm interested in the ways modern poetry (such as Elizabeth Bishop) defies traditional patriarchal discourse as dominant literary devices while embracing plurality and inherent virtues of the female voice. My project will trace Kristeva's semiotic/psychoanalytic evolution from linguistic models of the signifying process, to particulars of her psychoanalytic/linguistic theories, and finally, will attempt to construct a space within modern poetry, where it can be said, the subject (poet) remains on trial/in crisis, and poetic expression reveals the “jouissance” or unspoken voice of repression. Bishop's poetry constantly questions reality, knowledge, sexuality and the self. I strive to expose how Bishop's poetry performs Kristeva's theory of the self in writing; her poetry puts at the core of the self a sense of loss in her attempts to express herself in language. I offer close readings of “The Fish,” “Questions of Travel,” and “One Art,” to show how Bishop's self exposes the unconscious process of poetic activity. Kelly Oliver articulates Kristeva's contributions to linguistics and psychoanalysis quite succinctly, “When we learn to embrace the return of the repressed/the foreigner within ourselves, then we learn to live with, and love, others” (14).

We establish elements of a new approach to ellipticity and parametrices within operator algebras on manifolds with higher singularities, only based on some general axiomatic requirements on parameter-dependent operators in suitable scales of spaes. The idea is to model an iterative process with new generations of parameter-dependent operator theories, together with new scales of spaces that satisfy analogous requirements as the original ones, now on a corresponding higher level. The "full" calculus involves two separate theories, one near the tip of the corner and another one at the conical exit to infinity. However, concerning the conical exit to infinity, we establish here a new concrete calculus of edge-degenerate operators which can be iterated to higher singularities.

Identity is an important determinant of behavior. This paper proposed an identity model as one way of understanding those factors related to the perceived probability or willingness of a worker to participate in health promotion programming at the worksite. Part of a larger study on employee wellness, this study took place in the municipal complex of a small city in the southeastern United States. A stratified cross sectional sample of 150 employees was selected utilizing a systematic random sampling methodology. Structured interviews were conducted with 129 participants resulting in a response rate of 92% after adjusting for those people no longer employed by the city. In order to test the identity model developed by this author, descriptive analysis, simple multiple regression analysis and path analysis were utilized. The dependent variable, perceived willingness to participate in health promotion programming, was examined in relationship to commitment to one's health identity, commitment to one's organizational identity, tendency to comply with health initiatives, and the forms of supervisory power utilized to enact employee compliance. The descriptive analysis revealed that subjective health status is moderately and positively associated with commitment to one's health identity, that individuals can be strongly committed to a negative/destructive health identity, and that both the family and physician play important roles as health advice givers. The path analysis revealed that commitment to one's organizational identity, commitment to one's health identity, and tendency to comply with health initiatives are significantly and positively associated with willingness to participate in health promotion programming, accounting for 25% of the variance in the dependent variable. In contrast, the forms of supervisory power were not shown to be related to the dependent variable. In conclusion, the identity model appears to be a useful tool for the understanding of health attitudes and behaviors within a work setting.

Background: Exposure to household air pollution from cooking fires using biomass fuels (e.g., wood, charcoal, dung) is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Household air pollution (HAP) is one of the greatest environmental health risks in low-income and middle-income countries where the majority of people use biomass fuels to cook and heat their homes each day. Worldwide, approximately three billion people cook with biomass fuels; most often, these people cook inside homes with poor ventilation and use traditional stoves without chimneys. Even when clean-burning stoves and fuels are introduced in communities using HAP-producing cooking systems, adoption of these systems is often limited, and the use of clean-burning systems is not exclusive or sustained. To date, despite the need to understand behaviors related to smoke from cooking and heating sources, few investigators have used a behavioral theory or framework as a foundation for their investigation.

Methods: This qualitative exploratory study using open-ended interviews was conducted in Aleto Wondo, a rural area in southern Ethiopia. This research used grounded theory methodology and the theory of symbolic interaction to investigate the symbolic meaning that motivates actions related to exposures to household air pollution from cooking fire smoke. The target population was women who had children in the home and who primarily used biomass fuels for cooking.

Results: Themes that emerged during the analysis process and that are grounded in the data were (a) Awareness, Knowledge, and Interpretation; (b) Traditional Way; (c) Perceived Powerless and Lack of Agency; (d) Opportunities for Clarification and Education; (e) Access and Poverty; and (f) God’s Will. These themes summarized the major factors in the participants’ social world—factors that influence the participant’s symbolic meanings and interpretations that affected actions related to smoke from cooking fires.

Conclusions: Using the theoretical and methodological tools of grounded theory and symbolic interaction helped delineate how the themes identified in this research may each interrelate. Relative to household kitchen fire smoke exposure, human action is not overpoweringly affected by a single factor (e.g., God’s will, gender roles) Relative to household kitchen fire smoke exposure, human action cannot be ascribed to a single factor (e.g., God’s will, gender roles) or even a unique combination of known factors. These factors can be considered immutable or mutable based on an individual’s symbolic meanings and interpretive processes.

Jones, Clanton Krishna. "A Phenomenological Approach to Understanding Consensual Nonmonogamy Among African-American Couples". ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/7877.

Resumo:
Monogamy is recognized as a singularly accepted relationship construct within the United States. As a result, little is understood about alternative relationship constructs and those who choose them. Even less is understood regarding these practices among members of marginalized communities. Despite this lack of knowledge, there is evidence to suggest that approximately 4-5% of the United States population is engaged in some form of consensually nonmonogamous relationship pairing (a percentage comparable to the LGBTQAI community), and an estimated 25% of the population will engage in some form of consensual nonmonogamy over the course of their lifespan. This study looked to understand the lived experiences of African American men and women in married or cohabitating relationships who have participated in consensually nonmonogamous relationships with secondary partners. This qualitative study was conducted with 3 African American heteronormative married couples, using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) and a combined theoretical framework which includes symbolic interactionism and queer theory. Study findings concluded that consensually nonmonogamous couples viewed consensual nonmonogamy as an orientation as opposed to a lived experience in which their primary relationship remained their priority. Emerging themes included rules related to consensual nonmonogamy, emotional regulation, stigma, and the intersectionality between race and sexuality. Implications for social change include reduced stigma related to nontraditional families, a more informed understanding of practices and experiences involving consensual nonmonogamy and the development of sociopolitical interventions, policy and advocacy, and positive and negative consequences of consensually nonmonogamous experiences.
