Children in upper primary school who have not made progress along the Swimming and Water Safety Continuum may be at a greater risk in an aquatic environment because they have not developed the swimming competency, endurance and skills needed for survival in threatening aquatic situations. Three groups representing different socio-economic and geographical areas were selected to explore the relationships between psycho-social factors and the development of swimming ability among year seven students. Two groups from lower socio-economic areas were chosen. The first group was directly on the coast with easy access to the beach, while the second group was inland in the foothills of Perth. As higher socio-economic areas in Perth are generally not far from the coast only one group from a higher socio-economic coastal area was chosen. The participants were 540 year seven students, 282 of whom were males and 258 of whom were females. The primary variable of interest was the current swimming stage of year seven participants, and the differences between genders and/or locality groups. The primary research questions investigated differences between locality groups and/or genders for; a) perceived athletic competence and global self-worth, b) perceived swimming competency, confidence in deep water and importance placed on learning to swim well. c) perceived social support for sport and swimming activities and d) attendance at Interm, Vacswim and other swimming programs and aquatic venue experience. Relationships between swimming stage and the above variables were analysed. The secondary research questions investigated the most frequent reasons given by the students for not attending or discontinuing participation inVacswim, and whether there were differences between locality groups or genders. Findings indicated that the lower socio-economic groups had a significantly lower swimming stage and lower perceived self-worth than the higher socioeconomic group. Students from the lower socio-economic inland area had the lowest mean swimming stage as well as lower perceived social support for sport and swimming than either of the other two groups in the study. The two lower socioeconomic groups also attended less swimming instruction and placed less emphasis on the importance of learning to swim well than the higher socio-economic group. Despite these findings, the lower socio-economic groups did not view themselves as any less able in terms of athletic and swimming competence. However, as the two lower socio-economic groups have not progressed along the Swimming and Water Safety Continuum to the 'desirable standards' of the RLSSA (1999), these groups could be viewed as at-risk in an aquatic environment. At the same time, there was evidence that attendance at Interm along with attendance at another swimming program enabled participants to reach the 'desirable standards' of the RLSSA (1999). Girls generally had a higher swimming stage than boys in the lower socio-economic areas, attended year seven Interm and Vacswim more than boys, reported more social support for sport and swimming, and placed more emphasis on the importance of learning to swim well than boys. While many of these relationships between swimming stage and psycho-social factors have been intuitively accepted within the swimming teaching industry, we now have a better understanding of the strength and direction of these relationships.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of swimming rubrics. The 10-level rubrics were designed to assess the front crawl. Participants were children, aged 8 to 13 years, with and without a physical disability (n=19) from a "reverse integration" school in Montreal. Participants swam 20 meters with each deciding if a floatation device was necessary. They evaluated themselves as well as peers using the rubric format. The physical education teacher and two teaching assistants participated as teacher assessors. Teacher, peer, and self assessments produced similar scores. In peer assessment, students with disability produced lower scores than students without disability. Boys did not differ from girls. In self assessment, students with and without a disability showed similar competence in comparison to teachers. Also, boys and girls produced similar competence in comparison to their teacher as well. Finally, video assessment was significantly correlated with assessment done immediately after performance.

The purpose of this project was to write a grant to implement a free swimming program for foster children 17 years and under in the City of Petaluma. The Petaluma Healthy Youth Swimming Program (PHYSH) will provide a series of six 2-week sessions over the summer to teach swimming skills and swimming safety. The program is expected to increase self-esteem and resiliency among foster children and to decrease the disproportional rates of non-intentional drowning found among impoverished children of color. A part-time Master of Social Work Program Manager will be hired to oversee the program. The City of Petaluma's Parks and Recreation Department will provide in-kind donations of two swimming pools, swimming instructors, and lifeguards. Target stores will donate swimsuits to all registered participants. It was not required that this grant be submitted or receive actual funding to meet thesis requirements.

Resumo:
Previous research indicates that children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) participate in lower levels of physical activity in general and community-based recreation activities in particular than their typically-developing peers (Lang et al., 2010; King et al., 2003). Swimming is a particularly valuable activity because of its health, safety, and social benefits (Rogers, Hemmeter & Wolery, 2003). To date, no research has examined the effectiveness of a training approach designed to teach swimming instructors in community-based recreation settings to support children with ASD in swim lessons. Using a quasi-experimental time series design, his study examined the impact of training package that consisted of a workshop and in-pool coaching on the instructional skill acquisition of six swim instructors. Effects of the training on child cooperation and skill acquisition were also examined across eight children with ASD. Results indicated gains for the majority of instructors and children immediately following completion of the training. In addition, social validity ratings by parents, instructor, and aquatics coordinators were uniformly high. The results and limitation of the study was discussed with reference to the behavioral literature on instruction and generalization, with implications for future research. This study provides preliminary support for the effectiveness of a simple instructional package for teaching recreation staff to teach swimming to children with autism in community pools.

Resumo:
As a physical activity, swimming has many sociological and safety benefits (Brenner, Saluja, & Smith, 2003; Rogers, Hemmeter, & Wolery, 2010). Past research has investigated different methods for teaching swimming lessons to children with autism and other developmental disabilities (Jull, 2012; Pan, 2010; Pan, 2011; Rogers et al, 2010; Yilmaz, Birkan, Konukman, & Yanardag, 2010). However, no research to date has specifically examined the impact of a visual activity schedule (VAS) during swimming lessons. Moreover, the focus of past research has been mainly on 1:1 instruction, rather than group instruction. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a VAS in a group swimming lesson. Three participants with autism and other developmental disabilities participated in 14 30-minute group swimming lessons taught by a qualified instructor. A single-subject reversal (ABAB) design was used to examine the effect of VAS on child cooperation. Skill acquisition was assessed by comparing the videos from the beginning and the end of the study. Social validity was assessed by surveying participants??? parents about the perceived effectiveness of the VAS and their overall satisfaction with the program. The results showed no significant difference in child cooperation among the three participants between baseline and VAS phases, primarily because compliance was high for all three children during baseline. However, skill acquisition was observed across all three participants. In terms of social validity, all parents reported that they were satisfied with the way the study was conducted as well as the progress they saw on their child. The results are explained with reference to instructor training, generalized compliance, and the impact of group intervention.

Resumo:
Philosophy for Children is a cognitive enhancement programme that utilises Socratic questioning and a dialogic pedagogy to develop the reasoning, creativity, social skills and ethical understanding of children. An abundance of research has established P4C’s efficacy in achieving these aims (Trickey & Topping, 2004). However, Leat (1999) asserts that despite evidence of the effectiveness of thinking skills programmes, embedding innovative programmes like P4C into school practice is analogous to “rolling a stone uphill” (p389) and anecdotal evidence of the researcher’s own experience as a SAPERE level 1 trainer substantiates this claim. Exploration of the implementation of P4C in the classroom is a neglected area in the large body of research literature pertaining to P4C; research efforts until recently have tended to focus on the cognitive, affective, methodological and theoretical aspects of this approach. This research set out to test the veracity of Leat’s (1999) claim that teacher efficacy is “…a measure of the chances of implementing change” (p399) and employed qualitative interviewing to examine the factors which primary teachers perceived to determine the implementation of P4C in the classroom. The research findings identified three distinct groups of P4C implementers: regular, intermittent and ceased. Analysis of the factors that teachers perceived to determine the implementation of P4C in the classroom revealed differing levels of teacher efficacy amongst these three groups and substantiated Leat’s (1999) claim. Furthermore, analysis facilitated the formulation of fuzzy predictions about the likely consequences of decision making on the P4C implementation process. The research findings also highlighted tensions, which were not exclusive to any particular group, between the values and practice of P4C and the values and requirements of the prevailing educational policy context. Further analysis gave credence to the view of many experienced SAPERE P4C trainers that P4C in the current climate represents counter-cultural practice.

The purpose of the current investigation was to examine the effects of implementing a pictographic schedule within a currently structured swimming class consisting of individuals diagnosed with autism. Three boys (11 to 17 years) enrolled at a school for children with developmental disabilities served as participants. A time-series design was used to assess the effects of the pictographic activity schedules on the variables of time on-task, time off-task, and inappropriate response time in the activity setting, while rates of inappropriate behaviour were examined within the associated changeroom setting prior to and following the activity setting. The results indicated that activity schedules, when implemented in a physical activity setting, increase time on-task and decrease inappropriate response time in children with autism. In addition, when compared to periods of no schedule-use, activity schedules assisted in the reduction of rates of inappropriate behaviour within settings prior to and following activity sessions. Findings for the variable of time off-task yielded inconclusive results. The implications of these findings show the importance of visual activity schedules within all domains of education, including those involving physical activity.

Teaching children how to swim provides them with the necessary skills to maintain a physically active lifestyle. Many children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis have shown interest in participating in swimming lessons. Studies have demonstrated that teaching students with ASD how to swim has aided in their motor performance (Yanardag, Nurgil, & Akmanoglu, 2013), their ability to initiate social interactions with peers (Chu & Pan, 2012) and a reduction in stereotypical behaviours associated with ASD (Vonder Hulls, Walker, & Powell, 2006). In order to meet the needs of this unique group of students, swim instructors take part in a variety of training programs amongst other experiences to effectively prepare themselves to teach their students with ASD. This study consists of three individual case studies designed to examine the journeys that swim instructors have taken in order to effectively coach students with ASD how to swim, along with encouraging motor skill development, social interactions and reducing stereotypical behaviours. Two research questions guide this study: What are the experiences of swim instructors who work with children with ASD? What are the practical teaching strategies in swimming lessons that are effective for social skill development, reducing stereotypical behaviours and motor skill development in children with ASD? The findings of this study which focus on strategies of effective practice include: gestural communication, positive practice, contact communication, complexities of choice, and encouraging independence and confidence. Along with these findings, the instructors credit the following sources for their construction of knowledge: peer learning and mentorship, parental/caregiver support, and the value of certification and training. It is clear that instructors access a number of sources for their coaching development, but current swim instructor certification programs require revisions to increase instructor preparedness. This study contributes to current literature which focuses on coaching individuals with developmental disabilities. The findings may provide coaches with insight into strategies of effective practice for a more inclusive and equitable community.

This study compared the impact of a self-modeling intervention (viewing oneself perform an adaptive behavior) and practice, a self-observation intervention (viewing oneself perform at current skill level) and practice or practice alone on children's self-regulation of learning, anxiety, swimming performance and thought processes. A mixed methodology approach was employed as both qualitative and quantitative data were obtained. The quantitative component operated within Zimmerman's (1989, 2000) theory of self-regulated learning, and as such four self-regulatory processes (self-efficacy, motivation, self-satisfaction, and goal setting), as well as anxiety and physical performance were examined. For the qualitative component, the current study employed a think-aloud protocol (Ericsson & Simon, 1996) with the goal of understanding the thought processes that unfolded when children viewed self-modeling and self-observation videos. Thirty-three children, between the ages of six and ten (mean age = 8.3 years), were randomly assigned to a self-modeling group, a self-observation group or a control group. The children participated in an eight-day swimming intervention program. The analyses with the quantitative data showed consistently that the self-modeling group obtained superior scores on the measures examining the self-regulatory processes and physical performance as compared to both the self-observation group and the control group, with these two groups performing similarly. These results provide support for the implementation of self-modeling interventions with children learning motor skills. The analysis of the verbal protocols clearly showed that the majority of the children's verbalizations were self-evaluative in both a positive (Descriptive Positive), and negative (Descriptive Negative) direction, as well as, being related to future skill improvement (Prescriptive). These finding are discussed in terms of how they relate to Bandura's social cognitive theory of modeling (1977, 1986, 1997). A comparison revealed very few differences between the self-modeling and the self-observation interventions, suggesting that children appear to be gaining information about their skill performance and what to do to improve their next performance attempts regardless of the type of intervention.

The subject matter of the assigned project is Aquapark Brno – located near Lužánky. The subject is an architectural study elaboration of an aquapark adjoining the current swimming pool building which was established in 1979. This building facility is used primarily by professional swimmers and sportsmen for it contains the only 50 meters long swimming pool with a tribune in Brno. The aim of the project is to create new areas and pools for visitors with recreational intentions and therefore to widen the possibilities for free time activities. The project also deals with restoration of a 16 meters long training pool in the existing building, creation of inner and outer aquapark areas and adding exercise and dance halls as an extension to the existing fitness center. Another goal of this project was to make the pedestrian access to the area more pleasant which is achieved by creating an underground parking space in the area of the existing building’s frontal space and also by designing a footpath leading from the remote side of the excessively frequented Sportovní street. The primary aim of the project is an operational connection of the existing and the new building by a central building and also preventing an eclipse of the area by integrating the building in the area’s hillside. The advantage of the project is the presence of relaxation facilities and sports areas. The project completes the sporting environment of the area which makes it an attractive locality for a family recreation.

ABSTRACT Asthma is a common obstructive airway disease and the prevalence rate has increased in many countries, including Taiwan. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a 6-week swimming intervention for children with asthma on pulmonary function testing and the severity of asthma. Pulmonary function testing included: forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), percentage of FEV1/FVC(%) and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR). Thirty children (20 male and 10 female) served as subjects in this study. Subjects were patients from the Chest Medicine Section at Ping-Tung Christian Hospital, Taiwan. The mean age was 9.9±1.6 years, the mean height 138.4±10.3 cm, and the mean body weight 38.5±12.3 kg. The subjects were paired and randomly assigned into the experimental or the control group, with 15 subjects in each group. Besides regular treatment for their asthma, the experimental group received a 6-week swimming training (3 sessions a week with 50 minutes per session). Results showed that there was a significant improvement in FEV1 and PEFR for the experimental group after the 6-week swimming intervention(p<.05). There was no significant improvement in FVC, FEV1 and PEFR in the control group. There were no differences between the experimental and control groups in the percentage of FEV1/FVC(%). The severity of the asthma was significantly reduced in the experimental group(p<.05). Conclusion: These data suggest that a swimming program can improve pulmonary function parameters and reduce the severity of the asthma attack for asthmatic children. This study explored the experience of parents who have chosen not to immunize their children. Immunization is generally considered by health care professionals to be one of the most effective public health practices. There is an assumption in the immunization literature that if parents choose not to immunize their children then they must need more information, or they do not understand the risk of disease or they are following some incorrect line of reasoning. An interpretive descriptive design was used for this study of nine parents who had declined immunization for their children. Participants ranged in age from 25 to 45 years, with children ranging in age from 4 months to 12 years. All parents resided in the catchment area served by the Vancouver Island Health Authority - South Island. Data were collected by unstructured interviews and analyzed using inductive analysis. Parents reported that they sought to be well informed, they desired expert advice and they found themselves weighing conflicting choices and opinions. Parents also reported varying degrees of support from health care providers and others after making a socially unacceptable decision. And finally, parents reported their experience of learning to live with the repercussions of their decision including their perception of health care received and accessing health care services. The findings from this study have the potential of assisting health care providers to have a better understanding of the experience of parents who decided not to immunize, and how their practice potentially affects the experience of parents.

The Effect of Resistance Training on Propulsive Power of Front Crawl Swimming in Children June 1999 Student:Ping-Ping Chang Advisor:Shen-Yu Hsieh ABSTRACT The purposes of this study were to examine the effect of resistance training on propulsive power of arm stroke, leg kick, propulsive power percentage of arm stroke and leg kick, stroke rate, stroke length and performance in front crawl swimming. Subjects were 43 age-group swimmers. They were 11-12 yrs. old, train 5~6 times a week, 1.5~2 hours each time in water. They were tested before and after treatment training. Subjects were rank-ordered and balance-assigned into four groups: arm stroke, leg kick, whole stroke and control groups. Treatment training consisted of 6~10 repeats of 15sec all out tethered swimming, 3 days/wk, for 6 weeks. A two-way ANOVA and Pearson's product-moment correlation were used for data analysis. The results are: 1. The experimental groups (arm, leg and whole) significantly improved (p<.05) propulsive power of arm stroke, power percentage of arm stroke, stroke rate and performance time. 2. No significant differences were observed among the experimental groups using different parts of resistance training (p>.05). 3. The propulsive power of arm stroke, leg kick were correlated with front crawl performance time (r=-.39~-.62). Conclusions: After six weeks of tethered resistance training, no significant differences were observed among the different groups. It's probably because of insufficient training intensity, volume, and duration. It also may due to children's growth and development which blur the training effect. The propulsive power of arm stroke, leg kick and whole stroke swimming were correlated with front crawl swimming time. It confirms that propulsive power is one of the most important parameters that training is trying to develop.

Abstract This research was aimed to exploit the relationship between basic motor ability and swimming skill learning effects in primary school children. Subjects were 32 teenage male students at third grade in primary school who had no swimming experience. Thirteen basic motor abilities tests were examined before and after 4-weeks of teaching. Four technical tests, including kicking wall floating distance, leg kick speed, leg hand coordination, and front crawl comprehensive techniques were also carried out after 4-weeks of swimming learning for front crawl. Pearson product moment correlation was applied to examine the relationship between basic motor ability and swimming skill learning effects, and between total physical fitness score and effects of swimming skill learning. The significant level was set at α=.05. The results of this study were as following: (1) Significant correlations were found between front crawl leg kick speed and pre-test shuttle run, back strength, upper limb reaction speed and upper trunk lift ability ( r = 0.45, 0.42, -0.41, 0.41 respectively); (2) Significant correlations were revealed between total swimming skill scores and post-test vital capacity, shuttle run, back strength, upper trunk lift ability ( r =0.52, 0.39, 0.43, 0.61 respectively). This study concluded positive correlations between swimming skill learning effects and shuttle run, back strength, upper trunk lift performance of primary school children.

The purposes of the study were to investigate the effects of maximum speed with repetition training on anaerobic power and swimming performance in children swimmers. Eighteen children swimmers participated this study. The subjects were divided into short sprint high repetition (SSHR) group, long sprint low repetition (LSLR) group, and control (C) group according to their performance of 50-meter free-style swimming. All subjects sustained the training of basic swimming skill, SSHR and LSLR groups had additionally the maximum speed with repetition training for 15 meters with 10 repetitions and 25 meters with 6 repetitions, respectively. The training program proceed 3 times per week for 6 weeks. The anaerobic power of arms and legs, the performance of 50-meter free-style swimming, stroke rate, and stroke length of the subjects were measured before and after the experimental period. The paired t-test and independent one-way ANOVA were used to compare the variables within and between groups. The result showed that the peak, minimum, and average anaerobic power of arms and legs, and performance of swimming in SSHR and LSLR groups after the training were significantly higher(p<.05) than pre-test, and the fatigue indices of arms and legs were significantly lower(p<.05). There were no differences among three groups in all variables before training. Except the peak anaerobic power of legs, other variables in SSHR and LSLR groups were significantly higher than control group after training, but there were no differences between SSHR and LSLR groups. It is concluded that both of the two kinds of repetition training with maximum speed could effectively promoted the performance and anaerobic power of arms and legs in children swimmers.

The Effects of Swimming Training to Asthmatic Children in Physical Fitness, Pulmonary Function and Respiratory Inflammatory Mediators Abstract The present study aimed at exploring the effects of 8-week swimming training to indicative components of asthmatic children such as physical fitness, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), eosinophil, immunoglobulin E (IgE), and eosinophil cationic protein (ECP). The experiment was intended for children (n=36) suffering from asthma stage 1 or stage 2, with age 8.84± 1.11 years, height 130.96 ± 9.31cm and weight 31.01 ± 9.37kg, who were divided into two 18-member groups, experimental group and control group, then allow children in former group to attend 8 week swimming training, while in contrast, those in control group neither to attend the training nor to engage in any exercises involving swimming. The subjects, the said asthmatic children, received physical fitness test, FEV1 test, and blood specimen analysis before and after receiving the swimming training and then all test data are subjected to 1-Way ANCOVA. The experiment results demonstrate the follows: 1. In Physical Fitness After having completed the 8-week swimming training, the asthmatic children demonstrate major difference (p<.05) in their Physical Fitness , excluding explosive strength. These reveal that an 8-week swimming training indeed enhances the BMI, flexibility, muscular endurance and cardio- respiratory endurance in the asthmatic children. 2. In Pulmonary Function and Respiratory Inflammatory Mediators After having completed the 8-week swimming training, the asthmatic children demonstrate significant difference only in FEV1, but not in the three blood biological values: eosinophil, IgE, and ECP. These indicate that an 8-week swimming training indeed improves largely the lung performance in the asthmatic children. The purpose of this study is to understand correlation among personality traits, leisure sports, swimming and the satisfaction of swimming learning patterns of elementary students in Xinzhuang. The research is based on the method of questionnaire survey. We perform a stratified sampling on the grade 4 to 6 students in three elementary schools and gather 251 valid samples. Basic statistics, including frequency distribution, descriptive statistics, multiple choice analysis, cluster analysis, the McNemar test, nonparametric statistical test, correspondence analysis and one-way RM-ANOVA, are performed in our study. The study shows (1) There are more than 90 percent students in the survey having leisure sport habits at which the proportion of male students is much higher than that of female in statistical sense. (2) From the study, we find there are three major reasons for students not engaging in leisure sports due to with no enough time, lazy going out of door and with no companion. (3) In the survey, there are nearly half students with leisure sports having swimming habit. Nearly 90 percent of that have participated in swimming training lecture at which most of them prefer freestyle. (4) Near one-fourth students participating in the swimming training lecture are with highly satisfaction, especially those ones following the curriculum teaching. (5) In addition, the proportion of satisfaction in the exchange of swimming skills under the learning situational structure, the order of management ability in the teacher’s professional facet and the cost of the course arrangement are lower. The improvement is worth noting.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to establish the instruction strategy of swimming lessons for the diplegia children with spastic type cerebral palsy, and to evaluate the effects of the swimming lessons on the joint angle for them. The subjects of the study were 15 diplegia children with spastic type cerebral palsy from the elementary schools in Tainan City. According to preferences, eight were assigned into one experimental group and seven were into control group. All subjects underwent one physical therapy per week while the experimental group also underwent three 60-minute swimming lessons per week for 20 weeks. Before and after the study, tested items included: shoulder joint (flexion, abduction, external rotation, internal rotation), elbow joint (flexion, pronation, supination), wrist joint (flexion, extension), hip joint (flexion, abduction, external rotation, internal rotation), knee joint (flexion), and ankle joint (dorsiflexion, plantar flexion). The results were analyzed and listed as follows: 1. Before study, all subjects didn’t show significantly difference on angle joint measurements (P> .05). 2. Experimental group showed significant improvement on right shoulder internal rotation, left shoulder joint flexion, right left elbow joint supination, right wrist joint extension, left hip joint internal rotation, right left hip external rotation, and right left hip joint flexion. 3. Control group showed significant improvement on the tests of right left hip joint flexion and left elbow joint flexion. 4. Experimental group showed significant improvement in their swimming evaluations. Two were able to swim 25 m using breaststroke in coordination with freestyle leg kick and 25 m using backstroke with arm and leg coordination. Another two were able to swim independently with dog paddle for 10 m. This study showed that diplegia children with spastic type cerebral palsy not only could undergo aquatic therapy, they could also participate in normal swimming lessons and activities, provided that the instruction strategy of swimming teaching was modified to suit the needs of these children. After taking the swimming lessons, they showed significant improvement on movements of extremities. These improvements have positive effects on the subjects’ sitting, standing and walking postures.

This Internship Report falls within the scope of obtaining the Master's Degree in Sports Training for Children and Young people taught at the Faculty of Sports Sciences and Physical Education of Coimbra. The stage was hosted by the Nautical Club of Miranda do Corvo, which has about 300 students of all ages in the teaching field, and is currently one of the largest trainers of athletes in the county. The training period lasted approximately 9 months and was limited to giving swimming lessons to swimming schools, namely the Aquatic Adaptation (AMA) level, which includes Level A0 (AMA) and Level A1 ( Alternate Learning), that is, at the A0 level the objective was to try to understand if the objectives in each domain were being overcome, in order to determine which (s) were the most difficult domains and, at level A1, the The objective was to determine whether or not the students already performed the alternating techniques according to how they should be done. The sample that was part of this report were 12 children aged between 3 and 10 years, 6 of whom were of level A0 and 6 of level A1.A characterization of the sample was performed in technical and psychological terms, in maturational terms and in anthropometric terms, and these were evaluated in the same place, on the same day, under the same conditions and with the same protocol. And, since the level of the students still did not allow the application of test batteries related to swimming, observation sheets were applied to evaluate the level in which they were.To conclude, most of the students were able to reach the objectives outlined to the level where they were inserted, and those who achieved these goals passed level at the end of the season. Those who did not succeed remained at the same level.

This diploma thesis deals with bathing children, especially infants and toddlers, in indoor swimming pools. It focuses primarily on the potential health and hygiene risks of this activity. It is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part provides a deeper insight into the field of artificial swimming pools, is dedicated to current as well as first ever legislation, in more detail is dedicated to the hygienic requirements for swimming pools according to Decree no. 238/2011, as amended; describes the process of pool water treatment, provides an overview of possible types of disinfecting pool water treatment and comparison within the advantages and disadvantages, describes indicators of water quality and their importance, and mostly focuses on hygienic and health risks in connection with the visit of indoor pools. Gives examples from practice (epidemic), mentions the most common sources of pollution including the most common violations of visitors. The theme of hygienic and health risks is then divided according to the origin of risk to the microbiological part (dedicated to infectious agents), to chemical part (disinfection by products) and to the part of accident risks and risks associated with the water temperature. The thesis is also keenly interested in the views of experts for bathing children, especially infants and toddlers, in indoor artificial pools. Research in the practical part was made by a qualitative method using secondary data analysis (operational and guest regulations, operational logbooks for 2015, the results of laboratory analysis of pool water for the 2015, laws and decrees), participant observation and interviews. The research was conducted in indoor swimming pools in towns Jihlava and Prachatice, which run swimming courses for infants and toddlers as well as for older children. For research, I set the following goals: C1: To monitor the microbiological and the physical-chemical indicators of the pool water quality in relation to Decree no. 238/2011 Coll., as amended, in pre-selected artificial indoor pools during annual operation. C2: To focus on the health status of children (infants and toddlers) in swimming classes. C3: To find out the knowledge and attitudes of visitors (parents) and trainers in the field of hygiene principles for swimming in artificial pools and risks arising from them. Based on the targets I have set the following research questions: V1: Are the monitored microbiological and physico-chemical water quality limits exceeded, and if so, which and under what circumstances? V2: What health problems, if they occured, did infants and toddlers after regular visits of indoor pools have ? V3: Are these children suffering from allergic diseases, and if so, from what type? V4: What knowledge and attitudes do visitors (parents) and lecturers in the field of hygienic principles for swimming in artificial pools and potential risks have? This thesis may serve the general public to extend the knowledge in the field of bathing (not only the children) in artificial pools and to give a view on this subject from different perspectives, as well as operators of swimming pools as an information material.

Having the same parents repeatedly complete questionnaires over time, the current community based study investigated beliefs relevant to supervision, drowning risk, and water safety for children aged two through five enrolled in swim lessons. Results revealed that many parents value swimming lessons for young children and view supervision as an important prevention approach. Water safety beliefs and accuracy in judging children’s swim abilities improved over lessons, but time in lessons was related to endorsing poorer supervision of children near water. Having experienced a “close call” for drowning was found to make parents more aware of drowning risk and the importance of close supervision. Results highlight the need for parent education that targets beliefs about water safety and supervision during lessons, and also suggest that a close call for drowning may act as a “teachable moment” for parents and be an appropriate time to implement such interventions.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of different load swimming training on children’s performance (25m and 100m free style), growth hormone (GH), thyroid hormone (T3,T4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration. Methods: There were 35 male swimming team members (at least trained one year) and 15 general students (hadn’t received any training), ages from 10 to 13 years old, were recruited as the subjects of this study. The average high and weight of training boys and general boys were 143.2 +- 12.6cm and 37.2+-10.8kg, and142.1+-10.2 cm and 34.45+-7.98kg, respectively. The training load was 5 days per week, 1.5 hours each day for training team members and 3 days per week, one hour each session for general boys and lasted for 12 weeks. The blood samples were taken before training, after 4 weeks of training and after 12 weeks of training at 8 am after 8 hours fasting for GH, TSH, T3 and T4 analysis. The collected data were analyzed with 2-way ANOVA. Results: 1, The GH concentrations of trained members were significantly higher (p<.05) than that of general boys from pre test to post test. However, there were no significant differences of T3, T4, and TSH between two groups at different tests. 2, The T3 after 4 weeks and after 12 weeks of training of both groups were significantly higher than that of pre test. The TSH after 4 weeks of training was significantly higher than pre test and then dropped significantly (P<.05). The T4 was not different among different testing periods. 3, the 25m and 100m performances were improved significantly after 4 weeks of training, and the performances of 12 weeks of training were better than that of 4 weeks of training. Conclusions: The prolonged swimming training will increase children GH level may benefit the muscular and bone growth. The training programs 3 days per week for general children and 5 days per week for team members will improve their swimming performance.

Youth sports today often mimic professional versions of the sport. Combined with the competitive nature of society, youth sports have become a place where there are few winners and numerous losers. Additionally, many youth sport programs lack the fun, playful elements that used to be prevalent in informal sports. This study uses conjoint analysis to examine parents’ and children’s preferences for coaching methods (intervals, stroke drills, relays, and challenges), hedonic social activities (fun games, parties, and social events), and extrinsic rewards (best time ribbons, place ribbons, and participation ribbons) in a youth swim team program. The conjoint analysis offers insight about which coaching methods, hedonic social activities, and extrinsic rewards are preferred and acceptable to parents and children. Parents and children had similar preferences with their main desire being for the child to learn how to swim. Results indicate that parents and children are socialized into a belief of what sports programs should encompass and that current youth swim team programs are not serving all children.
