Swear words and their role in advertising have been debated for a long time. There has been a general sentiment that the use of swear words should be avoided in ads so they would not appear crass or offensive. Does this sentiment still reflect reality or could swear words be used to good effect in advertising? The aim of the present study is to find out how a number of informants react to the presence of swear words in advertisements, and what their general attitude toward swearing is. An online survey with 54 respondents provided quantitative data, and two group interviews supplemented it with more qualitative information. The study shows that respondents reacted favourably towards adverts with swear words as long as they were not too offensive.

Relationship marketing is widely discussed in the fields of industry goods and services. Also, the theme of marketing to children owns an important part within the existing literature in the marketing field. Nevertheless, there is a lack of literature for relationship marketing in consumer markets towards children. But especially in consumer markets there are certain products, which accompany consumer during their whole life. Brand preferences and loyalty towards certain products are not unusual among consumer and often evolve in early ages. Hence, it seems to be reasonable that companies try to attract children within their marketing activities in order to acquire and keep these children as customer. Since candies and chocolate are everyday products, which are consumed irrespective of age, especially the sweets industry presented an interesting sample for our research.

The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate in which way companies in the sweets industry use relationship marketing to children or perhaps do not use a certain approach at all. Our dissertation was based upon a qualitative method. We conducted semi-structured interviews with sweets companies and marketing agencies, which worked in the field of advertisements for sweets.

When companies want to reach children as consumer it is necessary to approach not only the child itself but also its influence groups. Moreover, companies need to consider that marketing towards children requires certain children-friendly tools and approaches. Amongst others present incentives an often used way to establish customer loyalty. Since children start to be early responsive to marketing activities, companies can benefit when they are approaching children as soon as they start to participate (actively or passively) in the buying process. Nevertheless, due to the low-involvement characteristics of sweets products the degree of binding seems to be lower than for products that require high investments. Therefore, the focus of sweets companies remain the establishment of awareness and attraction amongst children. However, since the discussions are increasing if marketing to children is ethical, the focus of companies seem to be shifting more and more away from the target group children, in order to avoid confrontation with the public discussion. This leaves doubt about the future perspectives of our research field.

Lantmäteriet, The Swedish Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registration Authority, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of SWEPOS and SWEREF99 (the Swedish official reference frame) and there-fore also responsible for control and verification of the data provided by the reference stations.Clas-Göran Persson at Lantmäteriet has created a new controlling procedure, including software, to analyze the position uncertainties of the SWEPOS stations using various statistical methods. The soft-ware evaluates the daily calculated coordinate data of the stations subsequently; it will not be installed directly on the actual stations. The primary goal is to study the stability of SWEPOS from a SWEREF 99 point of view, not to analyze SWEPOS real-time service. The controlling procedure is referred to as “the CGP Program”.The CGP Program is a toolbox of statistical methods created in MATLAB, determining standard devia-tion, correlation, distribution (outliers) and more. Its main purpose is to determine if the SWEPOS data consists of uniform uncorrelated normal distributed deviations, known as white noise, or not.The purpose of my Thesis is to; based on this new controlling procedure, create a graphical overview of the current status of the SWEPOS network for Lantmäteriet. Instead of making a thorough analysis of each station the maps created in this Thesis will visualize the outcome on an overall basis and identify the stations and areas of interest for further analysis.Together with representatives from Lantmäteriet we decided that three different map types where of interest. All the maps were to be based on SWEPOS data from 2010, analyzed by the CGP program, and visualized on a nationwide basis. They differ in their cartographic appearance and they all describe dif-ferent characteristics of the SWEPOS stations. Conclusions from the maps and the numerical analyzes: * There is a clear "winter effect", most obvious in the height coordinate. Removal of the snow-period results in lower standard deviations and fewer unwanted systematic effects. * The Northing coordinate has a slightly higher standard deviation than the Easting coordinate. The standard deviation in Height is around 50% larger than the horizontal standard deviation. * There is no evidence for physical movements, when comparing the official SWEREF 99 coordinates with the 2010 positions.

These days, milk substitute products are getting more popular and exist together with milk on the market. These substitute products are appreciated by consumers due to animal welfare, environmental or health related reasons. The purpose of the investigation was to make assumptions about the future situation of farmers and which demographic, personal, sociological, cultural and psychological determinants have an impact on Swedish consumers purchasing substitute products. The proposed methodology to reveal the impact of those factors was a qualitative research. Ten semi-structured interviews with residents of Västra Götaland, aimed to gain a deeper and better understanding of the reasons for consumption of milk substitute products, were conducted in total. The existing theory and scientific articles about demographic, personal, sociological, cultural and psychological determinants of consumer behavior, in terms of food choice and consumption, were used to create an interview guide and also to compare the collected primary data in the end. Participants were asked questions regarding their demography, lifestyle, awareness and perception of milk substitute products and other reasons for their consumption of milk substitutes. The findings revealed that demographic factors such as age and gender seemed to have an impact on the consumer behavior. Moreover, personal and psychological factors were revealed to have a significant impact on the consumption behavior. In particular lifestyle, perception, attitudes and motivations, knowledge and learning had a significant influence on Swedish consumers and their food consumption behavior. Regarding sociological factors it was discovered that friends had a significant influence on food consumption. Cultural determinants were also important to consider. However, they did not have a significant influence on the participants. The findings also revealed that health and animal welfare were the main reasons for changing the consumption. Interestingly, no participant started to consume these products due to environmental reasons in the beginning. The strong competition of milk and milk substitute products on the market is most likely to continue. The future situation for farmers will look different and might get more critical as milk consumption in Sweden could change. This small scale research does not make it possible to generalize the revealed findings. Nevertheless, this qualitative investigation provided the basis for future research in the field of consumer behavior towards substitute products.

Bates, Graham P. "Sweat rate and the loss of electrolytes in sweat in conditions of heat stress". Thesis, Bates, Graham P (1994) Sweat rate and the loss of electrolytes in sweat in conditions of heat stress. PhD thesis, Murdoch University, 1994. https://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/id/eprint/52148/.

Resumo:
In hot working conditions, high sweat rates with excessive loss of body fluids may result in dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. It is well established that dehydration and/or electrolyte disturbances will impair work performance, and if prolonged or severe can pose a serious risk to health. The lesser condition of hypohydration is undoubtedly widespread in the workplace, and may be indirectly responsible for less than optimal performance and accidents. One of the principal aims of this study was to develop and validate a new sweat collection method. Following validation of this method, fluid and electrolyte loss from a population of male workers of varying fitness and body composition was documented. Based on sweat rate and electrolyte loss in sweat, guidelines for fluid replacement when working or exercising in conditions of heat stress were formulated. Using these same measurement methods, the minimum duration of heat exposure required to trigger acclimatisation was sought using sweat sodium as the indicator. Twenty nine males, aged between 18 and 50 years, volunteered to exercise in the heat for 35 mins on two consecutive days in winter and summer (40% of maximal aerobic power; 30 °C; 50% RH). Prior to heat exposure, all subjects had their body composition and fitness assessed. Subjects were weighed before and after exposure to record sweat rate. During exercise, after sweat onset, sweat was collected by attaching 4 small collecting devices (9cm diameter) to the upper arms and legs. Following exercise, the sweat collected in these collection devices was evacuated and weighed, and the sodium and potassium concentrations analysed. Linear regression analysis provided validation of the collection method, by satisfactorily comparing electrolyte concentrations from both the right and left limbs. A very high degree of linearity bi-laterally for arms and legs but significant differences between arms and legs in summer was demonstrated. The same strength of linearity was reproduced in winter. Statistically significant relationships in decreasing strength were noted between sweat rate and fitness, sweat sodium and core temperature increase, and between sweat potassium and sweat rate. Based on the results of this study, rehydration at the rate of 500 mL/hr (250 ml every 30 mins) is recommended for people working in all but extreme heat (>45°C). Electrolyte supplements to avoid hyponatremia (sodium and potassium), are not required in the workplace, but are warranted in endurance sporting events (>3 hrs). The ability to predict the susceptibility of an individual to fluid and electrolyte disturbances, cannot be made from age, body composition, ethnicity or V02 max, although a high VO2 max appears to enhance heat tolerance. Sodium loss in sweat is extremely varied and is not statistically related to sweat rate. Acclimatisation to heat exposure accounts for a significant decrease in sweat sodium loss, and an increased sweat rate during summer compared with winter. This advantageous physiological adaptation requires a minimum of nine hours heat exposure to initiate.

Smith, Caroline J. "Regional sweat rates in humans". Thesis, Loughborough University, 2009. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/33780.

Resumo:
Exposures to hot environments and high intensity exercise provide some of the greatest challenges to the thermoregulatory system. Under such conditions evaporation is the greatest avenue of heat loss from the body. Whilst regional sweat rate variations in humans are widely recognised, most studies only measure a small number of sites using a limited surface area, and generalise this data to larger regions. A consensus in the literature indicates that the highest sweat rates are on the forehead and torso, and lowest on the extremities. However, no study has quantitatively measured regional sweat rates over large surface areas of the body. Since sweating is related to the thermal state of the body, comparison of regional sweat rates between studies is further complicated by the use of different environmental conditions, exercise modes and work rates. A good meta-analysis of existing data is therefore problematic. The aim of this thesis was to produce detailed whole body sweat maps for male and female athletes, and untrained males, during two exercise intensities in moderate environmental conditions (25°C, 50% rh) with a 2 m.s-1 air velocity.

Consumption of wine is high internationally. There is a tendency of increasing consumption of qulity wine over table wine. The experience of drinking wine is not like drinking any other alcohol beverage, it is more sensual experince because of the sophistication of the taste and flavors that wine possesses. Sweden is not an exeption from the worldwide trend of increasing wine consumption. Moreover, Swedes are developing even more esthetic way of drinking wine, namely combining it with food. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the attitudes and perceptions of the Swedish consumers towards wine and in particular towards Bulgarian wine if there are any existent. It further investigates the determinants of the attitudes and perceptions towards wine. Three interviews with representatives of HoReCa (Hotels, Restaurants and Catering) and Systembolaget are conducted. They and the literature review serve as a base for the formulation of hypotheses which have to be supported or rejected with the help of a questionnaire developed for that purpose. The questionnaire is translated in Swedish as it is designed for the Swedish consumers. The current research is descriptive, so only descriptive statistics are used for the analyses of the data collected. The results of the study are really intriguing. Some factors that are mainly con-sidered of great significance turned out as not so important when it comes to the Swedish wine consumers. The interviews gave a really interesting insight about the specific situation on the Swedish alcohol market and the consumption of wine among Swedes. The questionnaires reached their purpose and helped to support or reject the formulated hypotheses and to draw some essential conclusions about the perceptions and attitudes towards Bulgarian wine. Finally, this paper ends with the main conclusions reached by conducting the research, some market implications about wine producing companies that would like to enter the Swedish alcohol market and in particular Bulgarian wine cellars. Then the shortcomings of the study and the future research are dis-cussed.

As the English language holds the status of a Lingua Franca, being able to master it has become necessary in our globalised society. In Sweden, the English subject has been assigned a place along with Swedish and Mathematics as a core subject. However, of these three subjects, only English does not have specified knowledge requirements at the end of third grade. This has led to the start of English instruction varying around the nation. This thesis investigates the factors involved in the decision-making processes regarding the start of English instruction and what attitudes lower primary school teachers have regarding the age at which the English instruction should start. An empirical study was carried out by interviewing a few stakeholders in the context of schools and sending out questionnaires to lower primary school teachers. The results indicate that a large majority of the participants were in favour for early English instruction, as according to many of them, an early start results almost exclusively in advantages for the young children. However, the results also imply that the English subject, in some cases, might be less prioritised, due to the lack of specified knowledge requirements. Based on these results, further research on how different schools interpret these non-specified knowledge requirements is suggested.

Resumo:
This thesis aims at contributing to a critical discussion on the supposedly far-reaching secularity of Sweden on the one hand, and on the incongruence and inconsistency of lived religion on the other. At the center are people referred to as semi-secular Swedes – a group that is often neglected in the study of religion. These people do not go to church or get involved in any other alternative organized spiritual activities, neither are they actively opposed to religion or entirely indifferent to it. Most of them describe the ways they are – or are not – religious as in line with the majority patterns in Swedish society. The study is qualitative in method and the material has been gathered through interviews and a questionnaire. It offers a close reading of 28 semi-secular Swedes’ ways of talking about and relating to religion, particularly in reference to their everyday lives and their own experiences, and it analyzes the material with a focus on incongruences. By exploring how the term religion is employed vernacularly by the respondents, the study pinpoints one particular feature in the material, namely simultaneity. The concept of simultaneity is descriptive and puts emphasis on a ‘both and’ approach in (1) the way the respondents ascribe meaning to the term religion, (2) how they talk about themselves in relation to different religious designations, and (3) how they interpret experiences that they single out as ‘out-of-the-ordinary’. These simultaneities are explained and theorized through analyses focusing on intersubjective and discursive processes. In relation to theorizing on religion and religious people this study offers empirical material that nuance a dichotomous understanding of ‘the religious’ and ‘the secular’. In relation to methodology it is argued that the salience of simultaneity in the material shows that when patterns of religiosity among semi-secular Swedes are studied there is a need to be attentive to expressions of complexity, contradiction and incongruity.

When you are browsing websites, third-party resources record your online habits; such tracking can be considered an invasion of privacy. It was previously unknown how many third-party resources, trackers and tracker companies are present in the different classes of websites chosen: globally popular websites, random samples of .se/.dk/.com/.net domains and curated lists of websites of public interest in Sweden. The in-browser HTTP/HTTPS traffic was recorded while downloading over 150,000 websites, allowing comparison of HTTPS adaption and third-party tracking within and across the different classes of websites. The data shows that known third-party resources including known trackers are present on over 90% of most classes, that third-party hosted content such as video, scripts and fonts make up a large portion of the known trackers seen on a typical website and that tracking is just as prevalent on secure as insecure sites. Observations include that Google is the most widespread tracker organization by far, that content is being served by known trackers may suggest that trackers are moving to providing services to the end user to avoid being blocked by privacy tools and ad blockers, and that the small difference in tracking between using HTTP and HTTPS connections may suggest that users are given a false sense of privacy when using HTTPS.

Human axillary odour is formed by the action of Corynebacteria or Stephyloccui bacteria on odourless axilla sections. Several groups have identified axillary odorants, including 3-methyl-2-hexanoic acid (3M2H) and 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-hexenoic acid (HMHA), and how they are pre-formed and bound to amino acid conjugates. However, there is currently a lack of LC-MS methodologies and no reported NMR methods, that are required to further identify the non-volatile constituents, which would provide further information to allow understanding of the underlying physiological biochemistry of malodour. This work has incorporated a three-pronged approach. Firstly, a global strategy, through the use of NMR and LC-MS, provided a complementary unbiased overview of the metabolite composition. Metabolites were identified based on acquired standards, accurate mass and through the use of in-house or online databases. Furthermore, spectra of biological samples are inherently complex, thus, requiring a multivariate data analysis (MVDA) approach to extract the latent chemical information in the data. Secondly, semi-targeted LC-MS/MS methodologies has been used to identify metabolites with a common structural core (i.e. odour precursors) and provide structural information for the reliable identification of known and unknown metabolites. Finally, a targeted LC-MSIMS method provided an increase in specificity and sensitivity to accurately quantify known metabolites of interest (odour precursors). Initially, all methodologies were developed through the use of either an artificial sweat matrix (global strategy) or through the use of synthetic standards (semi-targeted or targeted strategy). The sample complexity was then increased by applying the methodologies to an ASG5 apocrine cell line, in order to provide further knowledge into apocrine cell metabolism and to identify whether there could be any potential male or female differences due to differences in circulating hormones. Changes in the cell metabolism were identified, and both the NMR and LC-MS data could differentiate between control, tamoxifen- and β-estradiol-treated. However, it is difficult to attribute these changes to specific pathways, as these hormones or the vehicle used (ethanol) are likely to produce a ripple effect across the cell's metabolism. Nonetheless, NMR spectroscopy quantified 25 metabolites with lactate being the most abundant at 19.1 mM, while HILIC-MS could detect a range of lipids, nucleotides, amino acids, fatty acids and vitamins. The methodologies were then applied to human apocrine sweat collected from six volunteers across five days. NMR spectroscopy was able to identify 25 and quantify 19 metabolites, with lactate being the most abundant at 13.2 mM. LC-MS/MS readily identified 12 amino acid conjugates with HMHA being the most abundant. Furthermore, a possible 20 unidentified conjugates were detected (LC-MSIMS semi-targeted methodologies) as well as putatively identifying 473 metabolites (LC-MS global methodologies). MVDA techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA) illustrated that intra-individual variation was greater than inter-individual variation, as well as secretions from both the left and right arm being consistent with one another. Moreover, MVDA illustrated the complementary nature of both NMR and MS, as the data acquired with the two types of instrumentation showed the same trends, even though these trends were based on different subsets of metabolites. The work presented herein, has successfully used a number of analytical technologies to investigate metabolite content of human apocrine sweat. It has been shown that a number of complementary techniques and multivariate analysis can provide a valuable insight into the underlying physiology of malodour.

Resumo:
Statement of problem: The expansion of the novelty sweets market in the UK has major potential public health implications for children and young adults as they may cause dental erosion, dental caries and obesity. Aims and objective: To investigate the potential dental public health implications of novelty sweet consumption in children. The objectives of this study were to determine the available novelty sweets available to UK consumers, to determine the erosive potential of the most available novelty sweets, to establish the sensory thresholds in children and to determine any potential link between high sensory threshold individuals and their consumption of novelty sweets. Methodology: A list of the most commonly available novelty sweets was created by undertaking scoping visits of shops in the Cardiff area. Children’s use and knowledge of the ten most available novelty sweets were undertaken using focus groups, amongst 11-16 year old children. The focus groups informed the design of a questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to 46 children aged 11-16 years during a sensory analysis assessment involving sensory taste thresholds for sweet and sour, assessed using the intensity ranking method. The pH of the ten most available novelty sweets was assessed using an electronic pH meter; the neutralisable acidity was measured by titration against 0.1M sodium hydroxide; an erosion test was conducted on human teeth using a surfometer; contact angles were measured using a Dynamic Contact Angle Analyser; the viscosity was measured using a rotational viscometer and sugar content of the sweets was measured using a refractometer. Results: A wide range of novelty sweets were available, accessible to children in 73% of shops with an average price of 96p. The children were all familiar with novelty sweets, they reported buying and consuming them regularly. The majority of children (65%) required higher amounts of sugar and citric acid than the absolute taste threshold to recognise the sweet and sour tastes. There was an inverse relationship between the preference of the novelty sweets and perception of sweet and sour sensory thresholds (p < 0.05). The pH of eight of the ten novelty sweets was significantly lower than the orange juice (p < 0.05). The neutralisable acidity of seven of the sweets was significantly higher than the orange juice (p < 0.05). The erosive potential of six novelty sweets was significantly higher than the erosive potential of the orange juice (p < 0.05). Delayed ultrasonication by 1 h, reduced the amount of subsurface enamel loss by 0.52-1.45μm in presence of saliva. Some of the acidic solutions had low contact angles, lower viscosity and higher sugar content than orange juice. Conclusions: A wide range of acidic and free sugar sweetened novelty sweets were easily accessible and affordable to children. Children reported consuming these sweets regularly. The high sensory taste thresholds perception for sweet and sour in children may potentially affect their consumption of novelty sweets. Those personnel involved in delivering dental and wider health education or health promotion need to be aware of and able to advise on current trends in sweet confectionary. The potential effects of these novelty sweets on both general and dental health require further investigation.

English is commonly used on the Swedish consumer market today. Not only is English present in Swedish print media but it is also highly present in everyday communication amongst Swedes. The aim of this paper is to find out why English is often picked for promotion purposes and to find out if young Swedes have more positive attitudes towards English than Swedish – Both in general and when it comes to advertising purposes. This study investigates the possible advantages as well as disadvantages of using English in logotypes and brand names aimed at a target group that are learners of English as a second or foreign language. The study was performed using a questionnaire divided into two parts. The first part aimed at finding out about the informants’ knowledge of English and attitudes towards English. The second part was about Swedes’ preferences regarding English versus Swedish brand names. To do so six fictional logotypes in pairs of two’s were created: one with all Swedish text elements and one with all English text elements. The informants were to pick their favorite logotype and motivate why they picked it. The results showed that Swedes generally have positive attitudes towards English and that they prefer English brand names to Swedish ones when the English used is on a certain linguistic level. A possible conclusion is that Swedes like English better for commercial purposes but only as long as they experience some familiarity with the words or expressions used.

Problem: A changing economy bears many implications; precarity within employment, the restructuring of concepts, management of activities and the employment of tools reinforcing security. As a measure to procure and preserve employment in the modern market self- branding has been proposed. The value a brand has today is multifaceted and has proven to aid not only businesses and corporations but individuals as well. However, as self-branding is contingent on the precariousness of the changing economy, previous literature has focused on strategies and implications for the self-employed and failed to mention ramifications for the ‘traditionally employed.’ Furthermore, previous literature is lacking with regard to the Swedish employment market and the incorporation of potential cultural influences. Purpose: The scope of this research is two-fold, of both an explanatory and exploratory nature. This research seeks to explain, understand and investigate the Swedish employment market with regard to self-branding and identify possible influences. As well as, uncover new insights and explore the significance of self-branding for Sweden's ‘traditionally employed.’ Method: This research adopted a qualitative approach, conducted 10 semi-structured interviews and implemented a thematic analysis to interpret the empirical findings and answer the research questions. The findings were later analysed in accordance with previous literature. Results: The results identify to major concepts of significance with regards to the strategy of self-branding. Swedes must consider their purpose and authenticity as two major determinants of the value of their brand. Moreover, the results indicate offline branding activities, the Law of Jante and self-branding for the ‘traditionally employed’ of high relevance for the Swedish employment market.

The domesticated apple (Malus × domestica) is one of the most cultivated plant over the world and is one of the most genetically polymorphic agricultural species. Studying the genetic diversity of the apple germplasm could provide important hints about the domestication process as giving a valuable resource for high reso- lution genetic mapping, QTL analysis and breeding programs. Advances in next generation sequencing technologies have driven the costs of DNA sequencing down to the point that whole genome re-sequencing (WGS) is now feasible for high di- versity, large genome species. The aim of this work is to gain information on genome-wide genetic variability patterns in apple and to identify regions of the genome that may have been selected during the process of plant domestication. SNPs were called from Illumina short reads for 63 apple cultivars represen- tative of European germplasm diversity. The identified SNPs (over 15 millions) were filtered for quality and to avoid repeated and paralogous regions. Additional filters (minor allele frequency and Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium) were applied to discard variants derived from genotyping errors resulting in a final number of 426,321 SNPs . The SNPs kept after the quality filters were used to study the population structure and the genetic diversity. A weak stratification of the ana- lyzed population emerged both from the principal component analysis (PCA) and a model based clustering approach performed using fastStructure. This analysis showed the presence of three subpopulations with a high level of admixture. FST between each couple of sub-groups was 0.055, 0.083 and 0.096 that indicate a moderate differentiation. Two different approaches were used to identify selective sweeps. The first is based on allelic frequencies and the site frequency spectrum (SFS) and it is implemented in the software SweeD. The second is based on linkage disequilibrium patterns and the omega statistic and it is implemented in the software OmegaPlus. Regions that were identified by both softwares were merged and used as candidate regions for positive selection resulting in 1,194 sweeps on the whole genome. A total of 153 gene predictions were extracted from these candidate regions and annotated using Gene Ontology terms and mapping on the KEGG pathway database. Similarity searches were also performed against plant databases to find gene orthologs and to better understand the function of candidates. The annotation revealed that genes under positive selection are involved in pathways like photosynthesis, protein ubiquitination, plant hormone signal transduction and starch and sucrose metabolism. In particular for the plant hormone signal transduction, were identified the auxin influx carrier and a SAUR family protein that lead to cell enlargement and plant growth and the ethylene insensitive protein 2 that leads to fruit ripening and senescence. The genes identified in regions under positive selection that were functionally annotated are consistent with the domestication traits for a better fruit: bigger, tastier and sweeter

This essay discusses women’s use of swear words in both single sex constellations and mix sex constellations. Its primary aim is to find out which swear words women use the most. The secondary aim is to see what communicative function they have in the women’s usage. As a final point, the tertiary aim is to discover in what gender constellation women swear the most. In this research, a combination of quantitative and qualitative methodology is used. The quantitative methodology is used to find out which words are the most common, and the qualitative methodology is used to examine which communicative functions they converse, as well as to study how the different gender constellations effect the usage of dirty language. The analysis of this essay is divided into these three parts - which words, which communicative functions, and the effect of gender constellations - and concludes and confirms previous research in this narrow and rare field of investigation. This paper shows that women swear less than men but more when they are in the company of their own gender. It also displays which words are the most common, both in tables and in discussion. Finally, this essay shows the most common functions of the chosen swear words women use.

Parkinsonism is a neurological disorder neurons that normally produce the hormone called dopamine deteriorate, causing progressive loss of movement control (e.g. bradykinesia, muscle rigidity, tremor at rest, and impaired postural reflexes). A syndrome with similar symptoms is Scans Without Evidence of Dopaminergic Deficits (SWEDDs), in which the patients not present evidence of dopaminergic deficits. The causes of primary parkinsonism, or Parkinson’s disease (PD), as well as SWEDDs, are not completely known. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have provided substantial contribution to the understanding of the architecture of complex diseases, bringing consistent and important contributions to PD. GWASs have been performed in the past with PD data with results that strongly influenced later developments. In this work, a study of genetic factors that contributes to the set of tools of association analysis for a better understanding of occurency of PD and SWEDDs. To that end, the set of tools of association analysis is involved in a study case for the PLINK method to execute GWASs with the objective of identifying SNPs which are associated to DP and SweDDs. To determine the level of significance of our results, only real data provided by Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) was used. PPMI is an international consortium created to indetify biomarkers of DP progression, to better comprehend the etiology of this disease and to provide key tools to increase the probability of success in the development of new therapeutic trials for PD. The association analysis, done with genotype data from three groups of individuals (healthy, affected by PD and affected by SWEDDs), SNPS that have shown strong connection to PD and SWEDDs were recovered, some of them are already linked in the scientific literature to PD or other degenerative diseases. But, we also have found about 60 SNPs that are not reported in the literature, which show evidence to be strongly related to the propensity to PD or SWEDDs. These results are promising targets for future genomic studies and may contribute to the understanding of the occurrence of PD and SWEDDs. Interestingly, although SWEDDs is a disorder clinically linked to PD by a series of common symptoms, the top ranked SNPs recovered from the PD dataset were not part of the SWEDDs dataset and conversely, that suggests that those two sets of markers could be more carefully explored in the genomic studies as common SNPs of interest for the two diseases.

The purpose of the thesis is to study Swedes who live in Australia about their thoughts concerning differences between the cultures and their communication styles in the following four areas; Power Distance, Masculinity verses Femininity, Affective verses Neutral, and Time.

I have chosen a qualitative approach for this study. My research is based on 10 telephone interviews; conducted with Swedes who work for various companies in Australia.

My theoretical chapter includes theories in the field of communication science and culture. Four scientists’ theories are explained; William B. Gudykunst's Anxiety /Uncertainty Management theory, Edward Hall’s High-and Low-context theory, Geert Hofstede’s national culture theory, and Fons Trompenaars’ culture business theory.

My research concludes that there are some main differences between the Swedish and Australian culture and between Swedes’ and Australians’ communication style. My research shows that Sweden is a low-power distance, feminine and neutral culture. While Australia is a higher power-distance, masculine and more affective culture, compared to Sweden. My study also confirmed that the time aspect is not as flexible communicated in Sweden as it is in Australia. All these culture differences are reflected in the cultures’ communication style. For example, Swedes are characterized by a team-oriented, open and equal communication style, whereas Australians use a more hierarchical, assertive and unilateral communication style. While group discussions, personal responsibility, and a high flow of information are common in Sweden, Australia is more characterized by delegation and protectiveness of territories, authority, and information flow.

Forsberg, Christian, e Emelie Mörner. "Swedes establishing overseas : Cultural differences in management between Sweden and USA". Thesis, Södertörn University College, School of Business Studies, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-857.

Establishing Swedish corporations in different parts of the world means that companies will face other corporate cultures, different or partly different, from their own. Cultures in USA seem quite similar to the Swedish culture, but there are most certainly differences, even if they exist under the surface. Cultural differences can cause further problems than those that normally exist in the initial phase of an establishment.

The question we wanted to bring an answer to in this project was: Which cultural related differences might cause problems for a Swedish company, establishing in the USA, from an organizational point of view?

The purpose with this report is to find out which cultural differences there are between the Swedish management and the American. To se possible differences we first studied the two cultures one by one.

We interviewed six companies that are established in USA. They all had Swedish owners, who also are managers in the companies. Together with extensive empirical studies and theories on management, as well as on national differences between cultures, we came to a conclusion:

If the Swedish manager is aware of the existence of cultural differences, and therefore is adjustable and observant to any differences, there should not be any problems neither to establish nor to lead a company in USA.
