Texto completo da fonteThis PhD dissertation is about interdisciplinarity for climate change: a research dynamic that has found a very broad expression in the literature, especially since the 1980s. This PhD tries to better understand how cooperations across disciplinary boundaries emerge and develop. More specifically it proposes an emphasis on reflexivity, in the sens of individual and collective scrutiny of the personal as well as disciplinary assumptions, motivations and interests, to facilitate innovative and authentic interdisciplinarity. Beyond this pragmatic objective, the exploration of interdisciplinarity for climate change allows for critical discussions on the role and organisation of science for this issue

Knowles, Tony. "Realising REDD in Africa : risk, feasibility and supporting policy". Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/71736.
Texto completo da fonteENGLISH ABSTRACT: Responding appropriately to anthropogenic climate change presents a considerable challenge to humankind. Projected changes in climate are anticipated to affect the world's natural systems, human health and economies in many ways. Consequently, there is an urgent need to implement climate change mitigation and adaptation measures that are appropriate and efficient. This dissertation focuses on aspects of risk and feasibility associated with land use based climate change mitigation. First, it reviews policy, implementation and incentive issues that are key to promoting permanence and reducing the risk of leakage associated with reducing emissions from deforestation and forest deforestation (REDD1) in sub-Saharan Africa. Secondly, it assesses the transaction costs associated with the implementation of avoided deforestation and reforestation activities and their effect on the financial feasibility of ventures located in woodland and rangeland systems. Thirdly, it explores the potential impact of biophysical risk factors (such as fire) on the outcome of REDD activities in two chapters. The first risk chapter introduces the notion of biophysical risk and reviews the risk of fire to REDD activities located in important African vegetation types. The second chapter on risk uses the Century Ecosystem Program and published climate projection data to assess the effect of projected changes in temperature, rainfall and atmospheric carbon dioxide on the outcome of REDD activities. The results indicate that, among the biophysical risk variables assessed, fire may not present a major risk to REDD activities located in African woodland, savanna and grassland systems. In contrast, fire may present a significant risk in moist forests where unprecedented dry periods may allow fire to occur in a system where it has previously been absent. The analysis of the affect of climate change found that changes in climate are generally predicted to lead to an increase in carbon stocks and sequestration rates for the vegetation types assessed. Exceptions do occur, such as the modeled effect on nutrient-rich savannas, which require further investigation. The analysis of transaction costs associated with REDD activities illustrated that such costs may inhibit the feasibility of smaller-scale activities, especially in ecosystems outside of moist forests with relatively low carbon stocks and associated revenues. Whereas the proposed creation of national-scale capacity may reduce some transaction costs to a certain extent, there is a clear need to better understand the true cost of REDD activities. In terms of required supporting policy and implementation capacity, it is noted 1) that multi-criteria land use planning is particularly important in reducing permanence risk, 2) that the scope of recognized land use activities that reduce atmospheric GHG needs to be expanded if the benefits of REDD are to be fully realised and 3) that informal land tenure may not require transformation prior to successful, sustainable implementation. A review of the appropriateness of community-based forest carbon monitoring found that such an approach presents significant cost savings while providing local employment and incentive opportunities. Exposure to such initiatives to date indicated that the quality of data collected is adequate and sufficiently robust to fulfill project and national-scale reporting and verification requirements.

Texto completo da fonteIn the information systems development process there are important success factors. By doing an extensive literature survey we have found that these factors emerge mainly from organisational issues concerning the objective of the process and the stakeholders. One factor - to discuss the system, its subsystems and to define the system's boundary - is a prerequisite for all the others. Factors emerging from the objective are mainly about the objective being well analysed and defined, being accepted among the stakeholders and meeting business objectives. Factors emerging from stakeholders are mainly about involving the right stakeholders in the process, achieving a positive attitude and taking care of their needs about knowledge and confidence. Based on this we have developed a framework aiming to guide organisations in what considerations they should make before the project begins. As a result of our framework there will be both a clear objective, which support the business mission, as well as positive stakeholders to support the information systems development process.

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis in Sciences of education and formation is based on a research-intervention approach theorized within the UMR-EFTS. It was the object of a contract with the La Salle Educational Fraternity with a view of leading and supporting change; it is made of two parts. The praxeological part consisted in implementing an observatory through an approach of “prospective re-reading” in three stages : a) a re-reading of the experiment, b) an analysis of the present functioning, and c) a projection into the future. The proceedings of these three stages led to settling the indicators of the observatory of the fraternities. The heuristic part dealt with characterising and conceptualizing the device. We resort to two complementary models of devices to characterize the Educative Fraternity : a) the comprehensive model (Boudjaoui & Leclercq, 2014) and b) the two-process model (Aussel, 2013). We then offer a new model for a device, focusing on governance and based on four principles : delegation, subsidiarity, involvement, and synodality. This model is centred on the group and articulates descending prescription and ascending prescription (Six, 2002)

Texto completo da fonteIn the early 2000s the Swedish government financed a health statement project. This project aimed primarily to provide experience and knowledge of the usability of various management control models to function as health statement models. Furthermore, the project was expected to provide experience and knowledge of the supporting processes that was essential for the successful use of the selected management control models. The Ministry of Enterprise, Energy and Communications, which was the principal of the project, expected that the project would lead to the presentation of a common health statement model that could be used within the municipal sector. The basis for this thesis consists of a longitudinal case study in which the health statement project has been studied in three of the municipalities involved in the project. The investigation has made it possible to get four research questions answered: How were the management control systems within the municipalities changed by the introduction of health statements in each municipality? What initiated this change? How was the change in the management control systems achieved? What was the result of the changes of the management control systems within the three municipalities? By answering these research questions it has been possible to gain insight into how management control models have been affected in a change process. The empirical material consists mainly of focus group interviews which have been supplemented by personal interviews and secondary data from three of the municipalities that participated in health statement project. The findings from the research can be observed in several areas. An organization's vision of itself in relation to similar organizations can determine whether a change process can be initiated. Individual forces, and especially stabilizing forces, are important to consider, and influence, if a change program shall be implemented. Institutional forces are linked not only to existing structures and individual drivers are not only linked to individuals' actions. Both types of forces are affected by and affect modalities that exist as interfaces between structures and actions according to the structuring theory. Supporting processes are important to consider in relation to organizational learning and individuals' actions. The communication and motivational processes has been important as mobilizing supporting processes.

Texto completo da fonteDevelopers typically change codebases in parallel from each other, which results in diverging codebases. Such diverging codebases must be integrated when finished. Integrating diverging codebases involves difficult activities. For example, two changes that are correct independently can introduce subtle bugs when integrated together. Integration can be difficult with existing tools, which, instead of dealing with the evolution of the actual program entities being changed, handle code changes as lines of text in files. Tools are important: software development tools have greatly improved from generic text editors to IDEs by providing high-level code manipulation such as automatic refactorings and code completion. This improvement was possible by the reification of program entities. Nevertheless, integration tools did not benefit from a similar reification of change entities to improve productivity in integration. In this work we first conducted a study to learn which integration activities are important and have little tool support. We discovered that one of such activities is the detection of tangled commits (that contain unrelated tasks such as a bug fix and a refactoring). Then we proposed Epicea, a reified change model and associated IDE tools, and EpiceaUntangler, an approach to help developers share untangled commits based on Epicea. The results of our evaluations with real-world studies show the usefulness of our approaches
