Resumo:
Within psychology, subjective well-being refers to a person’s overall evaluation of the quality of life from his or her own perspective. Traditionally, psychologists have focused on three specific components of subjective well-being: life satisfaction, positive affect, and negative affect, though disagreements exist about precisely how these components should be best measured. Psychological research shows that intuitively appealing predictors of SWB, such as income and health, are typically only weakly correlated with SWB, whereas personality predictors tend to be stronger. This chapter reviews basic psychological research on SWB, addresses questions about the conceptualization and measurement of the construct, and discusses recent attempts to clarify the associations among the various components that are typically studied.

Resumo:
Subjective well-being in economics relies on more expansive notions of utility than do conventional economics approaches and provides metrics to assess the income and nonincome dimensions of well-being. The metrics are well suited to questions where revealed preferences provide limited information, such as the welfare effects of macroeconomic arrangements individuals are powerless to change, and on behaviors that result from lack of choice or addiction and self-control problems. Current scholarship distinguishes between hedonic well-being, which encompasses daily experience and quality of life, and evaluative well-being, which encompasses well-being over the life course, including opportunity and life fulfillment (eudemonia). Some research aims to understand the causal properties of subjective well-being, and finds that higher levels are associated with better health, labor market performance, and willingness to invest in the future. Despite the contribution this approach can make and the efforts of a number of governments to utilize it, methodological challenges remain.

In 1974 economist Richard A. Easterlin asked in his seminal article “Does economic growth improve the human lot?” His answer to this question was a resounding no. The paper described what was later to be known as the Easterlin paradox, which is the observation that at one point in time rich nations are on average happier than poor nations, but over time there is no relationship between happiness and gross domestic product (GDP). The Easterlin paradox can also be found at the individual level. Easterlin’s paper is often described as starting the field of the economics of subjective well-being. The Easterlin paradox has been the topic of many published articles, with numerous studies supporting the original findings and some refuting them. This chapter describes the Easterlin paradox and recent evidence confirming or rejecting its existence. Other developments in the economics of subjective well-being are also discussed.

Chapter 8 investigates the association between Dibao receipt and social participation as well as subjective well-being. The chapter reveals some unintended associations between Dibao receipt and behavioral and subjective outcomes among both urban and rural recipients. Dibao recipients tend to lead a more isolated and detached life and engage in fewer leisure and social activities than their non-recipient peers. The stigma, shame, and despair associated with Dibao receipt and the poor outlook for income and improved social class may lead recipients to be unhappy and have low levels of satisfaction in life. There is also some evidence that receiving Dibao is associated with less time spent on education and work activities, echoing the many challenges faced by Dibao recipients to move from welfare to work.
