Betteridge, Tom. "'Yes, the century is an ashen sun' : poem and subject in the philosophy of Alain Badiou". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2016. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7108/.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
This thesis examines the relation between philosophy, the poem and the subject in the mature philosophy of Alain Badiou. It investigates Badiou’s decisive contribution to these questions primarily by means of comparison, especially to Martin Heidegger, Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe and Theodor Adorno, as well as by analysing Badiou’s readings of poems and prose by Paul Celan and Samuel Beckett respectively as sites of potential dialogue with his immediate predecessors. The thesis stresses the importance of French philosophy’s German heritage, emphasising not only Badiou’s radical departure from Heidegger and his legacy, but also the former’s wholesale rejection of philosophies that would, in the wake of twentieth-century violence and beyond, proclaim their own end or completion. The thesis argues Badiou’s innovative readings of Celan and Beckett to be crucial to understanding this endeavour: for Badiou, both writers use the poem to affirm novel conceptions of subjectivity capable of transcending the historical conditions of their presentation. The title quotation from Badiou’s The Century, ‘Yes, the century is an ashen sun’, anticipates both the affirmative nature of these subjective figures, and their presience, beyond the bounds of a twentieth-century ‘ashen sun’ pervaded by melancholy, for the ‘new suns’ of the twenty-first. The thesis is in four chapters. The first chapter unfolds the central concepts of Badiou’s departure from Heidegger using Paul Celan’s poems to focus the enquiry. It is guided by two of Badiou’s most condensed declarations about the poem, that, firstly, ‘the modern poem harbours a central silence’, and secondly, that ‘Celan completes Heidegger’. The second chapter exposes the political implications of Heidegger’s writings on Friedrich Hölderlin and the role of the subject therein, offering at its close some thoughts about what Badiou calls, following Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe, the poem’s ‘becoming-prose’. It concludes by drawing the poem and politics into relation by way of the philosophical category of the subject. The third chapter reads Badiou’s concept of ‘anabasis’ against Heidegger’s ‘homecoming’ in order to think the possibility of a collective political subject’s formation in the wake of Auschwitz. The final chapter examines the imbrication of the Two of love and the ‘latent poem’ in Badiou’s reading of Samuel Beckett’s late prose, contrasting this ‘affirmative’ reading of Beckett to Theodor Adorno’s earlier emphases on negation. Following its investigations of subjectivity, poem and prose throughout, the thesis concludes by returning to the title quotation in order to unfold the particular relations between subject, affirmation and negation Badiou’s philosophy enacts, and to offer further routes forward for research regarding Badiou’s philosophy and aesthetic figuration.

Rollason, Christopher Richard. "The construction of the subject in the short fiction of Edgar Allan Poe". Thesis, University of York, 1987. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/113/.

Resumo:
This study is primarily concerned with the diverse processes of constitution and deconstitution of subjectivity at work in the writing of Edgar Allan Poe. The analysis is largely confined to the short fiction, although some reference is made to Poe's other work; twentyone tales are examined, in greater or lesser detail, with the aid of various theoretical perspectives - sociological, structuralist and, above all, psychoanalytic. The aim is to present a new reading of Poe's texts which rejects traditional "unity"-based interpretations. The thesis privileges the psychological dimension, but in textual, not biographical terms; it stresses the tales' often undervalued element of modernity as well as their receptiveness to emergent processes and discourses. The psychological dimensions analysed include: the explicit presentation of mental splitting ('William Wilson') and institutionalised madness ('The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether'); the signification of alienation ('The Man of the Crowd') and self-destruction ('The Imp of the Perverse', 'The Black Cat', 'The Tell-Tale Heart') as constitutive of the subject at a determinate historical moment; the simultaneous construction and subversion of mythical signifiers of an illusory "full" subject, both metonyms (the detective, the mesmerist) and metaphors (the artwork, the interior); the symbolic emergence from repression of active female desire, perceived as threatening in the male unconscious ('The Oval Portrait', 'Ligeia'); and the disintegration of the subject under the pressure of its own repressions ('The Fall of the House of Usher'). Particular stress is laid throughout on the textual undermining of the dividing-lines between "normal" and "abnormal", "sane" and "insane", "respectable" and "criminal". It is concluded that Poe's work constitutes a map of the vicissitudes and contradictions of subjectivity in patriarchal culture; from the study of these texts, the "I" emerges as formed out of a massive repression, and as therefore constantly liable to fragmentation and rupture.

The poems in this collection draw, firstly, on my interest in a tradition of American confessionalism, which, particularly in the poems of John Berryman, seems to re-articulate the 'fragmented self of Anglo-American Modernism. A second major interest is in the more radical dislocations oflyric voice in John Ashbery's poetry. In the following poems, these two influences combine in the exploration of linguistic constructions of SUbjectivity, especially that of a knowing and knowable author figure. Specific practical concerns which stem from this central interest include translation and focalization strategies, polyphony, and oblique responses to philosophical, cultural, and literary contexts. These poems also explore questions of lyrical SUbjectivity in relation to constructions of gender and sexuality, with a particular focus on masculinity. I work from the premise that the authorial voice and its claims to truth, power, and sexual and gendered identity are . continually undermined by inner incoherencies and contradictions, a process of selfsubversion which these poems work to emphasize. Inmany places, this emphasis relates to a tension between a 'disembodied' authorial/lyrical voice and the 'embodied' form of the poem, which exposes that voice to textual inconclusiveness. This tension is also examined through the problematics of lyrical address and gendered relations between the'!' and 'you'. The Linguistic Subject of William Carlos Williams' Spring and All This thesis explores the discourse of authorial subjectivity at work in the declarative prose of William Carlos Williams' 1923 book, Spring and All, now regarded as a seminal text of American Modernism. In order to re-examine what has proven for critics to be a variously interpretable relationship between subject and object in Williams' early thinking, I read Spring and All here through an interconnected chain of conceptual frameworks. More. specifically, in hopes of remapping Spring and All's fragmented notion of authorial SUbjectivity against a more diverse history of ideas, these four chapters bring the longestablished influences of visual arts and Romanticism on Williams into juxtaposition with the less biographically or historically derived contexts of structuralist linguistics and Lacanian psychoanalytic theory. By drawing on correspondences among these contexts.this thesis finally argues for a notion of radically 'linguistic' SUbjectivity underlying Williams' early poetics, which may be productively compared to earlier philosophies of a mutually constitutive dialectic between external objects and a persistent centrality of the self, as well as later 20th-century revisions which emphasize the formalistic and linguistic nature of this relationship.

Metson, John. "Shelley's idea of nature : a study of the interrelationship of subject and object in the major poems". Thesis, Durham University, 1995. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5327/.

Resumo:
The thesis offers an interpretation of Shelley's poetry which focuses on his treatment of external nature. Its main argument is that a subject-object dialectic lies at the basis of his thought and style. Manifesting itself as a tension and oscillation between dualist and monist tendencies, this dialectic underlies the opposing strains of thought associated with his sceptical idealism; it informs the relationship between various contraries with which he is recurrently concerned, such as reason and feeling, necessity and freedom, language and thought; and it accounts for some major characteristics of his style--for example, its self-reflexiveness, indeterminacy, and restless forward momentum. Nature is found to play a complex dual function in this dialectical process: first, as the circumference to the circle of which mind is the centre, it provides the material of thought and poetry; secondly, through its cyclic processes, it serves as an emblem of the mind's dynamic relationship with that material. In finding the characteristic thought-pattern of his poetry to be constituted of a creative-destructive interplay of contraries, the thesis contends that Shelley is a significant exponent of Romantic irony. Such a reading of his work mediates between an earlier tradition of interpreting him as a Platonising poet of nature and the more recent emphasis that has been given to his philosophical scepticism and political radicalism. Throughout, attention is given to the interacting influences of his direct experience of nature (as recorded mainly in his letters) and the representations of nature he encounters in his reading. The following poems, chosen for their importance in Shelley's canon and as clear illustrations of his treatment of nature, are discussed chronologically in successive chapters: Queen Mab, Master, the 1816 odes, Prometheus Unbound, Adonais, and The Triumph of Life.

The present work accomplishes a systematic study about the composition of lyrical subject of Hilda Hilst in her work Cantares (2004). In order to develop this research, the methodology used was a combination of analysis and observation of the forementioned Hilst s book. Then some theoretical considerations were taken about who and how the subject is built in Hilst`s poems. By following Hilst s poetry one could face three relevant questions about her lyrical persona: the detection of a lyrical subject that recognizes himself as somebody constructed from his belonging to the other, out of him or as the self projected out of other self; the displacement of his identity by using a mask, and finally the ability of creating itself again, of thinking and constituting itself by means of the image and the word. Therefore this dissertation is organized in three chapters The being-beyond: the double face in Hilda Hilst s poetry , The self and the other behind the mask and The images and the word in Hilda Hilst s poetry in which the discussions proposed above are developed, revealing the building of a multiple and plural subjectivity.

Disease-gene association studies reported a relation between the TPH2 and depression in different populations, however some studies have produced contradictory results, being the tryptophan hydroxylase-2 (TPH2) a limiting enzyme in the rate of synthetic route of serotonin in the brain, many studies reported the polymorphisms of the TPH2 enzyme. Two big projects, HapMap and 1000 genomes, organized the major part of these polymorphisms from the study of several populations becoming these data available. This work is aimed to develop a system to obtain possible predisposition markers of a disease from the correlation between epidemiological data and population frequencies of polymorphism, based in the hypothesis that if in a population there is more frequency of a certain kind of pathology genetically determined, the variables involved should be more frequent and vice-versa. The model used was the involvement of variables of the TPH2 gene in the predisposition of depression. The data obtained with positive correlation in one of homozygous genotypes and in the allele of this homozygous suggested the presence of 10 polymorphisms (total 14,49%) possibly related to the development of depression. These data were compared to literature data involving case control studies. In these work were studied 20 from 69 polymorphisms described to the TPH2 gene. With the exception of only one polymorphism, all the data obtained through the strategy proposed in this work have been equals to the literature data, including the allele that is determinant to the predisposition of depression when it is demonstrated the association. Therefore, it is proposed this strategy as an alternative to realize this kind of Genome-Wide Association studies without the necessity of a case control study, only using the epidemiological data from the disease, decreasing the time and the cost of this study.

My collection of poems expresses the complexities that exist beneath the surface of my life – my tongue, our bleak country, the politics of having a dark skin, my ancestors who speak to me in unexplainable ways, and the speech of nature – the wind, the sea, death, birds. It is in writing poems and songs that I make a space to be alive, a space to meet my ancestors and to say the unsayable. The poems move between the ordinary, the magical, the abject, and the spiritual, often expressing the contradictions that exist within life. The main influence on my poetry has come from music, from African jazz musicians such as Zim Ngqawana, Thandiswa Mazwai and Msaki Mvana. Literary influences have come from Spanish poets such as Juan Ramón Jiménez, whose strong imagery and short lines capture profound emotion, and from ancient Chinese poetry that moves in a fluid and minimal way. I have also been inspired by the African spirituality expressed in Mazisi Kunene’s poetry and the down-to-earth associative poetry of Mangaliso Buzani and Mxolisi Nyezwa.

Published in 1869 therefore, a posthumous work the collection of poems of the book Petits Poèmes en Prose, by Charles Baudelaire, presents itself to the critics as a two-level enigma: on the first one, as a project with a poetic subject that contrasts itself with the lyrical locution of Les Fleurs du Mal; and on the second level, as a genre that challenges the formal places conventionally dedicated to prose and poetry. Starting at this problem, the present paper has the objective of analyze the adventure of Baudelaires prose poetry, respecting his singular diction and never forgetting to place it over all the critical wealth of the genre. Therefore, these poems enunciative ambient is recovered in prose; considering initially the places and functions of the poetry/prose opposition in the XIX Century and, later, linking this research to the peculiarities of baudelairean poetics. From the relationship with the verbal matters and the observation of the use of appositives and sequential constructions, it establishes a relationship between the theoretical reflection and a so-called modern lyrics, a poetics of the uncertain that has shown itself as a fertile ground, giving the work an openness in the way of the incomplete as a scriptural project.

Machinist in the Snow is a narrative long poem, much like a novel in verse that deals with the loss of memory and environmental rebirth. In the book, the narrator exiles himself into a frozen nature and attempts to return the frozen wasteland into its former, flourishing environment. The poems take on the memoric form of memory in a wide range of poetic forms from the traditional sonnet, haiku, or villanelle, to a scattered projective verse. In the center of these poems is an attempt to mimic the mind in the way that it shifts, in its moments of clarity, and in its attempt to dissect and understand the surrounding realities. Through logic patterning, deep image, and introspection, these poems are meant to give insight into what it means to be human in the digital age and to highlight the dwindling connection to the pastoral that is so deeply rooted in American society.

This thesis studies the clash between the hero and the First World War in the works of Rupert Brooke, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen. It explores the impact on their poetry and attitude towards the concept of the hero as it applied to them as people and poets. The study shows that over prolonged contact with the horrors of the First World War, it is evident in both literary sources and their poetry that both Sassoon and Owen changed their attitudes negatively towards both the idea of heroes and heroism, as well as the War as a just and glorious cause.  However, the myth of the hero was still a core belief of their society, and in order to not be branded cowards and discarded along with their warnings, they had to become heroes in the eyes of their society, to openly attack the concept and the war it fueled. This thesis then studies how and why First World War poetry and literature should be utilized within the subject of English in the Swedish School System, as a means to provide a multicultural and critical education.

Although metaphor is generally recognized as an integral component of everyday language, very few computational systems capable of understanding metaphoric utterances exist today. This thesis describes one approach to the problem and presents PoEM, a prototype system which recognizes and interprets metaphoric descriptions of emotions and mental states in single-sentence input. Building upon previous work in knowledge-based metaphor comprehension, this research adopts a goal-driven approach which assumes each metaphor is selected by a speaker for its aptness at serving a particular communicative goal. To identify these goals, an empirical analysis of metaphor distribution in song lyrics was performed, and typical communicative intentions and surface patterns were identified for the top five most frequently occurring metaphor groups. These intentions and surface patterns have been implemented as a set of metaphor templates and interpretation rules in PoEM, using the WordNet lexical database for supplemental semantic information. Evaluation of PoEM demonstrates fairly high accuracy but low recall.

While many studies have considered the decisive importance of Mallarme's work in literary, poetic and artistic modernity, those who have attached themselves to the readings that poets have given of it are rarer. But it appears that, for many poets after 1945, writing is not done without Mallarme being present, as an object of reflection on poetry and language and, more broadly, as an interlocutor with which the act of writing makes its own way and invents itself. The study focuses mainly on four works that pose, with acuity and sometimes even gravity and deepness, the question of poetry: Yves Bonnefoy, Michel Deguy, Jean-Michel Maulpoix, Henri Meschonnic. It is about making dialogue the points of view and going through the poetic discourses on and with Mallarme’s work. And our goal is to show that the work of the author of "Tomb of Edgar Poe" speaks as well for itself as for our present. For that, we will be attentive to the idea that a work is itself because it is lived through the experience of its readers

Perioperative registered nurses (RNs) are vital to the provision of safe patient care for those undergoing invasive and surgical procedures within acute care settings. Unrealistic transition-to-practice (T2P) expectations for novice RNs (newly licensed and experienced RNs new to perioperative nursing) have resulted in significant turnover and attrition rates as high as 45%. A T2P program, known as the Perioperative Orientation, Education, and Mentoring (POEM) program, was developed to address attrition and turnover through mentoring and professional development. The POEM program was a pilot program implemented at a large academic medical center. An evaluation tool known as the Surgical Skill Assessment Tool was developed to evaluate the POEM program. A preintervention score of 56 and a postintervention score of 237 demonstrate an increase in experience, skill, and knowledge acquisition. Content data analysis revealed themes and subthemes from each of the 2 focus groups as well as recommendations from the quality improvement (QI) project leader and project coleader. The recommendations include developing a nurse extern program, advertising and promoting perioperative nursing to local nursing schools, supporting the clinical advisor program, encouraging involvement in the local Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) chapter, and mentoring novice RNs and RN clinical advisors. The need to evaluate strategies for improvement, recruitment, and retention is critical to sustain the perioperative nursing workforce. Further research is necessary to refine the POEM program and to understand the role of professional mentoring in facilitating a smooth T2P for novice nurses entering perioperative services.

v anglickém jazyce This thesis is based on the Kurt Oppert's term "Dinggedicht" (in English "object-poem" or "thing- poem"), through which it views the transformations within the conceptualization of the subject and things in modern poetry. Apart from poems associated with the name of R. M. Rilke, thingness is also seen from the perspective of the functional use of the object in a poem (e.g. a thing as a tool of characterization orironization), whichis related to theuse ofobjects in figurativelanguage - the thing as a part of the metaphor, simile or allegory. As part of the definition of a thing-poem, the thesis also deals with the issue of subject-object relationship, which leads also to the category of a lyrical "I" in the literary theory. The thesis is based on individual poems which represent a concrete, prototypical way of dealing with the subject in poetry. These poems are delimited by the second half of the 19th century and the first two decades of the 20th century. The thesis is not based on strictly defined national literature, but it considers the German, French and Czech context in the comparative perspective.

Abstract The motivation for this research is to explore human characteristics of the way hair has been represented, in relation experience of life in Chinese paintings at different periods and in different places. Through discussion of the relationships between human subjects and their hair styles, I explore the feelings and transformed meanings of the reality in the paintings. Moreover, trying to make experimental paintings by myself, I find ever more possibilities and ways to express the human characteristic of “hair styles”, “symbols”, and “wind” in paintings. These are the reasons I discuss the painting “The Poem for 3,000 Hairs”. In discussion of hair styles in different social hierarchies now and then, I analyze the importance and aesthetic feelings about hair styles in the past; to explore the inner worlds and complicated feelings within women’s souls, and finally what is in my inner world as well. “The Poem for 3,000 Hairs” is a painting that expresses inner spiritual ideas about hair styles that existed in that time as a social phenomenon, and those inner spiritual ideas were rather like romantic poems. The motivation of this painting is to illustrate momentary mental states and life experiences through the meanings implied through inter-action between hair and wind. Chapter one states the motivation and purpose of this painting, and my own social experiences and background, etc. Chapter two explores the evolution of hair styles in a range of eras and places. Chapter three discusses the inner worlds within the female soul, the author’s ideas and thoughts, and the procession of painting. Chapter four explains the thoughts and implications of “The Poem for 3,000 Hairs”. Chapter five is the explanation of the process of creating this painting. The final chapter summarizes the statements made in this thesis and explores the directions of future developments.

This diploma thesis focuses on structuralism and concept of discourse in the work of French philosopher Paul Ricoeur. The aim of the thesis is to show Ricoeur's effort to interconnect structuralism and hermeneutics and, after this, to treat how this interconnection works as a general paradigm of human sciences. The point of departure is Ricoeur's revision of Saussurean structural approach which divides language into language system (langue) and speaking (parole). Then, the concept of discourse is grounded and the thesis proceeds to problems of text. By using the concept of discourse for written forms of language (texts), Ricoeur introduces this term to his hermeneutical approach. Its interconnection with structuralism is made possible by circular dialectics of explanation and understanding in which structuralism is shown to be necessary for the hermeneutical knowledge. Ricoeur's hermeneutical thought is also characterised by movement from text to action. Ricoeur finds some parallels between them and between the interpretations of them. By this, he proceeds from hermeneutics of text to hermeneutics of action and presents his conclusions as a general paradigm of human sciences. These are said to have a hermeneutical nature. However, according to Ricoeur, the deep hermeneutical comprehension is...

Resumo:
Largely based on material recorded during an internationally sponsored inter-university research tour through the Sesotho speaking area of southern Africa in August 2000, this thesis explores the state of the Basotho oral poetry, the dithoko `praise poems', the difela `mine workers' chants' and the diboko `family odes' at the beginning of the 21st century. Unlike the classical dithoko which were inspired by the wars or the battles in which the Basotho fought as well as cannibalism, those composed at the beginning of the 21st century are inspired by socio-economic and political situations of the poets. Lack of wars has resulted in the poets turning the praising to their chiefs and themselves. Changing socio-economic conditions inspired the difela compositions. The diboko though still a living tradition among the rural Basotho are not adhered to by some who are affected by modernism. Performance of the three oral genres has shifted from the natural settings such as the battlefield, working parties, traditional courts, assemblies, etc., to organized annual festivals such as Morija Arts & Cultural Festival which constitute the Basotho's `popular culture'. The subject-matter and themes of the dithoko have shifted from warfare to traditional chiefs, current heroic deeds of the poets, current political situations and religion. The difela are characterized by inclusion of new subject-matter. The diboko still play an important function as carriers of the names of the ancestors, the tribal idiosyncrasy of the clan and the history associated with the clan's establishment. The three Basotho oral genres demonstrate an emergence of a new phenomenon whereby one genre penetrates another, a phenomenon which may be called `migration of texts'. The last chapter explores the insights emanating from the entire research, and discusses suggestions on what should be done to ensure that the Basotho oral genres are maintained and improved. The video footage of the poets recorded at various places of the Free State and Lesotho have contributed to the success of the research. The thesis serves as a contribution to the Basotho's dynamic oral poetry on which scholars will hopefully do further research in the near future.

Resumo:
This is a study of the emergence of William Wordsworth’s literary reputation during his lifetime. It is constructed as a variety of biography, organized chronologically in order to attempt a fuller sense of the negotiation of public image and reputation that went on between Wordsworth and his audiences. Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of dialogism structures the study as a series of “conversations,” interconnected and moving outward from self, to intimate group or coterie, to public, reviewers, and culture at large. The coterie and members of it have a large part to play in Wordsworth’s emerging style. The evidence drawn upon for each “conversation” moves from biography to letters to published poems and prose works to published reviews of those works, again roughly describing a movement outward from self to coterie to culture at large. The “conversations” appeal to two or more different kinds of audience, however, because of a “multi-voiced” feature of Wordsworth’s published collections, especially noticeable in the critical success of the sonnet form. Further, members of the coterie, notably Coleridge, later emerge as important interpreters, advocates, and critics themselves, adding to the critical success of William Wordsworth in the larger cultural conversation. Ultimately, Wordsworth is recognized for his contribution – a triumph of his confidence in his own style, as well as the education of a new kind of reader that now engages with Wordsworth’s poetry at a level of intimacy that makes the reader feel like a member of the coterie.

Abstract Do Long-chen is an elementary school teacher and also one of the few experts on both children’s poem creation and teaching in Taiwan. His promotion on children’s poem teaching has had a great influence on Mandarin-speaking areas. Such a children’s poem writer obviously has his professional backgrounds and styles. The purpose of the study is to investigate the teaching process from Do Lung- chen’s children poems. The methodology was qualitative approach including classroom observation and in-depth interviews from September 2005 to December 2007. Data were collected and analyzed through text analysis to examine the application of Mr. Do’s teaching concepts and styles to the actual classroom setting. The procedures of the methodology contained connections between children’s poem writing process and the teaching guidance as well as contexts from Mr. Do’s teaching concepts and styles. The results were shown as follows: 1. The teaching procedures of Mr. Do’s children poems consisted of appreciation, practice, imagination, and thinking. He designed teaching materials from his creating experience, which combined literary theories into his teaching. 2. The students usually followed the steps of the teacher’s. The abundant materials from the pre-writing activities made the students more familiar with the poem creation. Pre-writing activity means a lot to students since it modifies and transforms their concepts in creative writing. 3. The connections between Mr. Do’s children poem creation and teaching were: life experience and life attitude. These two elements manifested his teaching styles of creativity and pursuit of happiness. His diversity and insistence in poem teaching created students’ happy learning and their scope of vision. Lots of insights were gained from the study. During the research, knowledge has been enriched, teaching has been re-activated, and life has been enlightened. It is hoped that the study serves to influence more teachers and students interested and devoted in children’s poetry teaching and creating. Moreover, it is expected the enthusiasm and insistence from Mr. Do’s teaching will be leading the way to readers and educators.
