A strong-weak coupling duality symmetry of the string equations of motion has been suggested in the literature. This symmetry implies that vacua occur in pairs. Since the coupling constant is a dynamical variable in string theory, tunneling solutions between strong and weak coupling vacua may exist. Such solutions would naturally lead to non-perturbative effects with anomalous coupling dependence. A highly simplified example is given.

Aim: The aim of the study is to create understanding of the implications of lean implementation on the work environment seen from the coworker perspective Method: Qualitative case study with primary data collected by interviews of managers and employees at ICA Maxi Special in two different cities. Secondary data was collected from scientific articles and relevant literature regarding previous research in the field. Result & Conclusions: The study reveals that implementation of lean affects the coworkers' perceived work environment and that factors such as participation, meaningfulness, autonomy, communication and education are important factors for a good work environment. The initial reluctance experienced by coworkers when implementing the concept was later exchanged for a positive attitude and a new way of work, which consequently led to a better working environment in general. Contribution of the thesis: The findings of this study contribute to research by understanding and highlighting the factors that influence the employees work environment. By understanding the effect of external structures, such as lean and how it affects internal structures, and such as the actions and reactions of coworkers, companies can mitigate the impact on the work environment when implementing lean. Suggestions for future research: The study is rather small and conducted at a workplace where most of the employees have worked together for several years. Therefore, we suggest that future studies can be conducted at companies with a larger employee turnover, or at a different type of company in the service industry, or as a comparative study between

The purpose of this survey has been to test and analyse the behaviour of battery systems mixing parallel strings of lithium and lead acid. The underlying theory of why batteries of different chemistries behaves together was investigated in order to understand the resulting tests. Several tests were made with different products, loads and chargers in order to confirm this theory and to discover cases where the system works good and where it works bad. Based on this understanding a script was made in order to find a point of the least annual cost. Annual cost was then compared with systems of Lead acid only and Lithium only. The final goal for the script was so that a salesman can input known parameters for a backup site. Script is then adding a small Lithium battery in parallel with a fixed Lead acid battery and, increasing Lithium in size and estimating depth of discharge for Lithium and Lead acid at each step, until desired breakpoint. A point of minimum system cost together with Li size is then represented together with the recommended current limits.

As a growth industry, tremendous cost pressures are pushing the LED lighting market away from traditional power electronics converters and towards solutions that are more unconventional. Lower quality LED lights use simple low-cost converters, whereas high end product may add complexity in order to achieve a more dramatic energy savings. SIMO technology represents an opportunity in LED lighting to combine the low cost of single-stage converters with the energy saving capability of a two-stage, multiple string solution. This paper describes the modeling, analysis, design, and testing of a Multiple Independently Regulated Output Flyback (MIROF) converter, used in LED lighting for the purpose of multiple string control. This converter is based upon SIMO technology applied to a PFC Flyback converter. The result was the development of a novel control method and an operational demonstration unit. A cost comparison of the MIROF and a conventional two-stage driver shows a promising cost reduction benefit for the former, and comparative testing shows favorable performance of the MIROF converter compared to the two-stage approach.

In this study, we examine the dynamic relationship between tourism growth and economic growth, using a newly introduced spillover index approach. Based on monthly data for 10 European countries over the period 1995-2012, our analysis reveals the following empirical regularities. First, the tourism-economic growth relationship is not stable over time in terms of both magnitude and direction, indicating that the tourism-led economic growth (TLEG) and the economic-driven tourism growth (EDTG) hypotheses are time-dependent. Second, the aforementioned relationship is also highly economic event-dependent, as it is influenced by the Great Recession of 2007 and the ongoing Eurozone debt crisis that began in 2010. Finally, the impact of these economic events is more pronounced in Cyprus, Greece, Portugal and Spain, which are the European countries that have witnessed the greatest economic downturn since 2009. Plausible explanations of these results are provided and policy implications are drawn. (authors' abstract)

In this thesis, I describe an LED strobe controller that I designed and built. With the advent of much brighter LEDs, it is possible to create stroboscopes with both high intensity output and high maximum flash rates. Additionally, the proliferation of Wi-Fi enabled devices provokes the idea of a next-generation interface for tools in Strobe Lab. The initial goal was to produce an LED-based strobe that has sufficient light to replace existing flash tube stroboscopes. The final product combines three high powered LEDs with a microcontroller and Wi-Fi card. Users can adjust settings through a web based interface accessible from both laptops and mobile devices. In addition to the simple user interface, the controller is compatible with other equipment in Strobe Lab as it can be triggered by the commonly used methods. Established techniques, such as sync and delay, and newer techniques, such as color-encoded multi-flash images, are possible with this device.

Conventional stripping of burley tobacco is labor intensive and typically requires 50 to 75 worker hours per acre (wkr•hr/ac). The goal of the project was to reduce labor by optimizing leaf removal by string trimmer heads using combinations of strings lengths and motor speeds. In tests conducted on a single grade, all leaves outside the grade were removed by hand. Plants were run through the machine for sting lengths of 5, 7 and 9 inches and associated motor speeds which were monitored and recorded. Stripping efficiencies were calculated for each plant and collectively for each set of four plants. The machine was then tested for three grade stripping efficiency. Particle size analysis tests were run to determine potential losses due to leaf shredding. Efficiencies for single grade testing ranged from 93 to 96% for optimal string length and speed combinations. Stripping three grades by machine resulted in an average of 97% efficiency. Potential losses due to shredding accounted for 5.6% of the total weight mechanically removed. It is believed that this stripping concept, implemented on a full scale four grade basis, could result in savings of at least 18 wkr •hr/ac [45 wkr•hr/ha].

Resumo:
Although it is unclear which cellular factor(s) is responsible for the genetic instability associated with initiating and sustaining cell transformation, it is known that most, if not all, cancers have mutations that inactivate the Rb-mediated growth control pathway. We show here that acute inactivation of Rb by RNA interference or expression of the E7 viral oncoprotein from human papillomavirus (HPV), and the resultant deregulation of one E2F family member, E2F1, leads to DNA double strand break (DSB) accumulation. These DSBs occur independent of apoptosis induction, and activation of ATM, NBS1, p53, or MAD2, and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Although ROS accumulation is associated with DSBs generated from the mis-expression of another nuclear oncoprotein, c-MYC, we find that E2F1 does not contribute to c-MYC associated DSBs, indicating that the DSBs associated with these oncoproteins arise through distinct pathways. However, we find that small changes in E2F1 levels by inhibition of c-MYC transactivated microRNAs known to limit E2F1 protein expression, lead to DSB accumulation. These results suggest that despite the DSBs arising by different mechanisms, c-MYC assists in the regulation of E2F1-associated DSBs. We also find elevated levels of E2F1-associated DSBs in Rb mutated cancer cell lines in the absence of an exogenous DSB stimulus. These basal, E2F1-associated DSBs are substantially lower in Rb wildtype cancer cell lines that have p16ink4 inactivated or express HPV E7. However, we show that we can manipulate DSB levels in these cancer cell lines by modulating Rb and E2F1 activity and suggest that these results may be extended to breast tumor organ culture. Thus, Rb status is key to regulating both the proliferation promoting functions associated with E2F and for preventing DNA damage accumulation if E2F1 becomes deregulated. Taken together, these data suggest that loss of Rb creates strong selective pressure, via DSB accumulation, for inactivating p53 mutations and that E2F1 might contribute to the genetic instability associated with transformation and tumorigenesis.

AbstractTraveling wave reactor (TWR) is an advanced nuclear power system, which can keep the total amount of fissionable nuclides constant during its lifetime through the transformation of fissionable nuclides in the reactor, so as to maintain the stability of the effective proliferation factor of the reactor core. As a coolant, lead has low neutron moderation ability and capture cross section. At the same time, it also has excellent thermal characteristics. Lead cooled traveling wave reactor is a reactor with high inherent safety and good application prospects. The research on reactor core mainly focuses on the physical calculation of the reactor, and the analysis of its thermal hydraulic model and characteristics is relatively scarce, which limits the design and safety analysis of the advanced reactor. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the thermal hydraulic model of lead cooled traveling wave reactor. In this paper, a thermal hydraulic model suitable for the core of lead cooled traveling wave reactor is proposed. Considering the axial particularity of heat release from the core of traveling wave reactor, the model considers the axial thermal conductivity of fuel rods ignored by other thermal hydraulic models. Due to the strong thermal conductivity of core coolant, the thermal model also considers the heat transfer of fuel assemblies and the flow distribution of core flow. The research shows that the thermal hydraulic model is suitable for the analysis of thermal hydraulic characteristics of lead cooled traveling wave reactor, the thermal hydraulic characteristics are studied by using the thermal hydraulic model.

AbstractIn this volume, both qualitative and quantitative scholars describe their findings on the networks of migrants and their descendants and explore the content of their social ties for educational and labor market success in seven European countries. Some contributions cover decades of work in this field, making this one of most comprehensive books on this topic, both theoretically and empirically. Almost without exception, the authors, although describing various ethnic groups, different geographical and professional contexts and different time periods, are critical of a number of the main arguments about the networks of migrants developed in the field of migration studies. Central in their critique is the question about the importance of co-ethnic or inter-ethnic ties and networks, and their importance to enter the labor market and move up. In the field of migration studies, concepts like integration and assimilation have greatly influenced the thinking of its scholars. The idea that newcomers only become fully integrated in a society when they gain a similar economic position and are in contact with people without migration background, or, in other words, become part of the mainstream, has been a strong and dominant view in our field (Alba & Nee, 2003; Alba, 2009; Portes & Rumbaut, 2001; Portes & Zhou, 1993). People who largely interact with co-ethnics and or work in labor market sectors that are dominated by co-ethnics (ethnic niches) are usually seen as not (yet) fully integrated into their new society. And when this also translates to the native-born children (so-called ‘second generation decline’), this is seen as problematic (Ganz, 1992). In this broader framework on integration and assimilation, Granovetter’s (1973) idea of strong and weak ties has entered the field of migration studies. Lang and Schneider, in this volume, rightly state that it is questionable whether the idea of strong ties – for co-ethnics – and weak ties – for ties with people without migration background – was originally intended by Granovetter to be used in this way. But what is clear, however, is that this idea fitted perfectly with broader theories on integration and assimilation. The importance for newly arrived migrants of strong co-ethnic ties in ethnic networks is generally considered one of the starting pieces of the puzzle laying out the process of assimilation in its first phase. The idea of weak ties, also in its symbolic emphasis on ‘weak’, perfectly suited the still scarce and superficial contacts with people of native descent in the early stages of the assimilation process. Since the concept of weak and strong ties fitted so well with the dominant theories about integration and assimilation (classical, neo and new assimilation), much of what was happening with migrants, and even their descendants, in the labor market was seen through, what many would call, an ethnic lens (Crul, 2016; Dahinden, 2016; Wimmer, 2013). Migrants gained a first foothold in the labor market through strong co-ethnic ties and were slowly moving up through their weak ties, making use of information and resources of people of native descent with whom they had only superficial contact. The idea of strong ties also resonated with the notion that their relations with co-ethnics were more meaningful and profound. There was also a dark side to strong ties. Under some conditions, because of the limited information and resources in the co-ethnic network, for some the strong ties could lead to an ethnic mobility trap.

In recent years psychologists have developed new and comprehensive models of positive human character and methods for assessing it. This chapter reviews these developments as they apply to training and preparing soldiers for combat. Positive character is especially important for those who lead others in dangerous and threatening contexts, including leaders in the military, law enforcement, firefighting, and similar occupations. A model of character strengths is described, and different approaches to formally teaching character are explored. The West Point Leader Development System in described in detail. Specific character strengths linked to successful performance in in extremis conditions are described. The relevance of new developments in character science to nonmilitary domains is discussed.

The self-organization in inanimate nature led to the life birth, which, having new properties, developed to the intelligence appearance. Intelligent beings activity made created civilization. The science and technology progress leads to the strong artificial intelligence creation. The condition for the improvement of all self-organization forms is the presence of competition, which was at all development stages. Unmanaged competition can lead to catastrophes, but, until recently, none of the life forms had the opportunity to either provoke a global catastrophe or monopolize its dominant position. Such possibilities both lead to the death of civilization, and, possibly, life on Earth.

Frisancho, Verónica, Alejandro Herrera e Eduardo Nakasone. Does Gender and Sexual Diversity Lead to Greater Conflict in the School? Inter-American Development Bank, dezembro de 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0004609.

Resumo:
Diversity in gender identity and sexual orientation challenges traditional institutions, social norms, and gendered stereotypes. This may translate into greater levels of conflict in society. Using data from 95 middle and high schools in Uruguay, we exploit plausibly exogenous variation in the share of LGBT students across classrooms and estimate its impact on the prevalence of psychological, physical, and sexual violence in the school. On average, we do not find support for a strong link between the share of LGBT students in the classroom and the prevalence of violence, yet we show that there are gendered effects of greater diversity: a larger share of LGBT students in the classroom is associated with greater levels of psychological and physical violence among LGBT girls.

We document a sizable effect of oil price fluctuations on US banking variables by estimating an SVAR with sign restrictions as in Baumeister and Hamilton (2019). We find that oil market shocks that lead to a contraction in world economic activity unambiguously lower the amount of bank credit to the US economy, tend to decrease US banks' net worth, and tend to increase the US credit spread. The effects can be strong and long-lasting, or more modest and short-lived, depending on the source of the oil price fluctuations. The effects are stronger for smaller and lower leveraged banks.

Resumo:
This landscape report explores the impact of earning micro-credentials on the social mobility of rural learners. Through four in-depth case studies, we show how earning micro-credentials may lead to credential attainment, workforce entry, promotions, and/or economic improvements (e.g., salary increase, prioritizing learners impacted by poverty), particularly for Black, Latino, and Indigenous populations, as well as women. All of the initiatives emphasize the need for strong regional partnerships across educational sectors and deeper efforts to engage communities of color to lead to greater impact. Preliminary research indicates that micro-credentials can—and in some cases, do—lead to job promotions, higher wages, and an increase in self-confidence for rural learners.

Resumo:
The impacts of characteristic weather events and seasonal patterns on infrasound propagation in the Arctic region are simulated numerically. The methodology utilizes wide-angle parabolic equation methods for a windy atmosphere with inputs provided by radiosonde observations and a high-resolution reanalysis of Arctic weather. The calculations involve horizontal distances up to 200 km for which interactions with the troposphere and lower stratosphere dominate. Among the events examined are two sudden stratospheric warmings, which are found to weaken upward refraction by temperature gradients while creating strongly asymmetric refraction from disturbances to the circumpolar winds. Also examined are polar low events, which are found to enhance negative temperature gradients in the troposphere and thus lead to strong upward refraction. Smaller-scale and topographically driven phenomena, such as low-level jets, katabatic winds, and surface-based temperature inversions, are found to create frequent surface-based ducting out to 100 km. The simulations suggest that horizontal variations in the atmospheric profiles, in response to changing topography and surface property transitions, such as ice boundaries, play an important role in the propagation.

Hill, Braden. Unseen inequities: The role of leadership in addressing structural barriers to education in Australian universities. Journal of the Australian and New Zealand Student Services Association, abril de 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.30688/janzssa.2023-1-05.

Resumo:
The lack of diversity in leadership positions within the Australian university sector has been a persistent issue, with predominantly older, white, male leaders holding power and shaping the future of higher education. While student demographics have become more diverse, the leadership of academic institutions has not kept pace with these changes. Therefore, as student expectations and attitudes change, university communities are encouraged to (re)consider their commitment to proactively addressing the structural inequalities that continue to impact the journeys of the students we seek to serve. Nevertheless, activist universities—those that proactively and visibly seek to lead on matters of socio-political importance—are few and far between. The referendum to change the constitution to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through the establishment of a Voice to Parliament is an example where change has the potential to tangibly address educational inequality. The positions that institutions choose to take (or not), in relation to the attitudes held by a considerable proportion of our student cohorts, presents a strong argument for courageous leadership at all levels of our universities to lead, educate, and advocate for social good.

Pinheiro, Armando Castelar, e Regis Bonelli. New Export Activities in Brazil: Comparative Advantage, Policy or Self-Discovery? Inter-American Development Bank, julho de 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0006866.

Resumo:
This paper examines Brazil's export discoveries in aircraft, cell phones and swine meat. All cases confirm the importance of efficiency gains and sunk costs in the expansion of exports and lead to the following conclusions: both economic policy and comparative advantage played important roles in the emergence of new export activities; economies of scale were a crucial determinant of competitiveness; and a well-known brand helped to overcome information asymmetries and facilitate entry into export markets. Exporters concentrated on design, marketing, R&D, and product assembly, making coordination with suppliers an important element in their strategies. Public policy additionally had a strong if sometimes unintended influence. While governments can foster discoveries, especially in the presence of market failures, policy alone cannot produce a successful exporter.

Agüero, Jorge M., e Verónica Frisancho. Systematic Bias in Sensitive Health Behaviors and Its Impact on Treatment Effects: An Application to Violence against Women. Inter-American Development Bank, abril de 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0007031.

Resumo:
Violence against women takes place mainly in the private sphere and isperpetrated by people close to the victim. These features can introduce large biases into its reporting in specialized surveys as well as to the authorities. We test for the existence of measurement error in the reporting of such violence using experimental methods in Peru, a country with several specialized surveys but one lacking reliable administrative data. We ask women to report past experiences of violent acts by randomly assigning them one of two questionnaires, one that replicates current surveys and another that relies on list experiments to provide a more private setting. We find no significant reporting bias on average. However, we uncover strong evidence of non-random measurement error by education level. For highly educated women, an increase in privacy leads to higher reporting of violence, while no change is observed for the less educated. The increase is large enough to reverse the education gradient in violence. We discuss how nonclassical error in the outcome variable affects the estimation of the role of risk factors on violence. In particular, randomized controlled trials underperform instrumental variables estimates and, under certain conditions, the former could lead to even larger biases compared to cross-sectional studies.

Review question / Objective: P: Breast cancer patient; I: Single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with breast cancer risk; C: Healthy person; O: By comparing the proportion of SNP mutations in the tumor group and the control group, the effect of BREAST cancer risk-related SNP was investigated; S: Case-control study. Condition being studied: Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most common cancers among women, and its morbidity and mortality have continued to increase worldwide in recent years, reflecting the strong invasiveness and metastasis characteristics of this cancer. BC is a complex disease that involves a sequence of genetic, epigenetic, and phenotypic changes. Polymorphisms of genes involved in multiple biological pathways have been identified as potential risks of BC. These genetic polymorphisms further lead to differences in disease susceptibility and severity among individuals. The development of accurate molecular diagnoses and biological indicators of prognosis are crucial for individualized and precise treatment of BC patients.

Through surveys of over 43,000 leaders, ExecOnline and the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) identified three key tensions that organizations must address to enable leaders to lead effectively in the current environment. This paper discusses these tensions and offers insights to address them. Tension 1: Leaders want to work virtually–but it’s socially isolating. Tension 2: Leaders want more development opportunities–but they are burned out. Tension 3: Leaders need to make hard decisions–but they also need to motivate and engage talent. The insights gained from this paper suggest that leaders and organizations take action in the following ways: Offer more cross-functional opportunities as well as foster connections within teams, including through group coaching. Provide development opportunities that are easier to access and consume, as well as opportunities for personal growth and development. Target strategic and talent engagement skills for leaders who are already strong on one skill set and reinforce learning by pairing training with one-on-one coaching.

Micco, Alejandro, Eduardo Levy Yeyati e Ugo Panizza. Should the Government Be in the Banking Business?: The Role of State-Owned and Development Banks. Inter-American Development Bank, novembro de 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0010834.

Resumo:
This paper surveys the theoretical and empirical literature on the role of state-owned banks and also presents some new results and a robustness analysis. The paper shows that state-owned banks located in developing countries have fiscal costs because they are characterized by lower returns than comparable privately owned banks (on the other hand, there is no evidence that state-owned banks located in industrial countries are less profitable than their private counterparts). We then point out that this evidence cannot be used as an argument against the existence of state-owned banks, as this low profitability might stem from state-owned banks activity on projects characterized by low private sector investment and high social return. While we find no evidence that the presence of state-owned banks promotes economic growth or financial development, we also find that the evidence that state-owned banks lead to lower growth and financial development is not as strong as previously thought.
