Resumo:
Literature survey made in this research indicated that the roughness has a significant effect on the design of a self-cleansing sewer. A conceptual model was therefore developed taking into account the effect of roughness in the sediment transport in sewers. This model was later tested against experimental data obtained from a test rig. The rig had a pipe which was specially fabricated in two halves so that it could be divided to coat the interior with uniform sand grains to provide roughness. The experimental data shows a good correlation with the model developed. Two relationships i.e. for smooth and rough pipes, were derived from the results. The effects of volumetric sediment concentration, pipe diameter, sediment size and effective roughness on these relationships were in turn examined. Head loss formulae acquired by past researchers were slightly modified to suit the range covered by the experimental data. The relationships developed in this research were subsequently applied to sewer design. These were later compared to the criterion of 0.76 m/s proposed by the British Standards. In the case of smooth pipes, it shows conclusively that the criterion of 0.76 m/s produces excessive slopes for pipe diameter up to 1.0 metre. However, for rough pipes the criterion gives insufficient slopes to maintain a self-cleansing sewer. This is valid up to a pipe diameter of 0.3 metre. Beyond this diameter the criterion gives high slopes. Comparisons were also made with studies in the wider field of sediment transport on fixed bed. These have set in context the proposed formulae for smooth and rough pipes in the design of storm sewers.

A software package has been developed for the IBM personal computer that aids engineers in storm sewer design and drafting. The most unique feature of this software package is its extensive use of the AutoCAD graphics system. The software package uses AutoCAD to enter storm sewer data. Drainage areas, sewer line locations, type of structures, and all other hydrologic parameters can be entered. The software also creates plan and profile drawings of the storm sewer system through AutoCAD. There are other unique features. The software can calculate the hydraulic grade line for the system. If the user enters street centerlines and widths, the program can automatically calculate the exact coordinates for drainage inlet structures located on streets. If contour lines are entered, the program will determine the surface profile above the sewer lines, calculate the approximate elevations of the structures, and check for minimum ground cover when designing the storm sewer system. Data can be entered two ways in AutoCAD. The first way is to simply enter the numeric values for the parameters. The second way is to enter the raw data and let the program calculate the parameters. An example of this would be, entering a drainage area polygon and letting the program calculate the drainage area, weighted runoff coefficient and the time of concentration. This software allows the engineer to design and later make changes in the configuration of a storm sewer system quickly and easily.

A desk top model has been developed for "user-friendly" application in personal computers to simulate watershed response to a rainfall event in terms of runoff generation and to estimate nonpoint source pollutant loadings associated with the storm event. The algorithms utilize the SCS TR - 55 method for calculating runoff hydrographs for a single storm event. A methodology has been adapted to generate pollutographs which combines the SCS Type II rainfall distribution with the standard pollutant washoff equations. In addition, this model allows for the design, evaluation, and cost effectiveness analysis of various best management practice (BMP) measures as tools to manage stormwater quantity and quality.

Stormwater pollution is a major problem in many of the areas where it is present. Due to the changing nature in terms of quality and quantity of stormwater, which has its origin in many different places, it is difficult to control and identify the source of pollution. Some of the pollutants present in stormwater run-off include oxygen-demanding substances, suspended solids, trace metals, toxic organic compounds (eg. chlorinated hydrocarbons), nutrients, refuse, plastics and pathogenic bacteria and viruses. This thesis identifies and discusses the problems in the Lourensriver catchment area, and produce practical solutions to decrease the pollution. The report consists of four sections. Part I : Part 2 : Part 3 : Part 4 : Evaluation of the existing area and identification of the problem. Literamre study. Control of Stormwater ie. storing, treatment and disposal. Presencation of steps to be followed to rectify the problem. If the findings and recommendations are followed, it should make a positive contribution to the wellbeing of the catchment area. The findings of this report could also be applied to areas with similar problems. The following recommendations are made for the Lourens River: " Monitor and strict implementation of the Wateract (1936). " In the Lower zone, pollution can be diluted and flushed out by ways of the closure of Melkschloot. " Design of any new development must take place in such a manner so as the stormwater discharge after development will be of the same quality and quantity as before construction. " Creation of permeable surfaces in established areas. " Delay of rainwater flow out of all areas. " Construction of additional sedimentation and detention dams for the storing and treatment of stormWater. " Awareness programmes to inform the public and industry. " Implementation of preventative measurements. " Establishment of controlling body's to ensure co-ordination betvieen various institutions and local government. " Monitor of run-off from industrial and agricultural terrain and identifying of unlawful practices. Strict anti-littering and dumping actions. Placing of waste storage bins in residential and industrial areas. Permits for the usage of poisons and the monitor there off. Encouragement of cleaning up actions and groups. Encouragement and increase of street cleaning operations. Construction of effective catchment basins to remove sol ids before it ends up in the stormwater pipes. Regular cleaning of catchment basins. Regular flushing of stormwater pipes. Construction of marshlands. Construction of reedbeds.

Resumo:
A statistical model has been developed to study the long-term behaviour of a stormwater detention unit. This unit stores a portion of the incoming runoff, corresponding to the empty space available in the unit, from which runoff is pumped to a treatment plant. The objective is to avoid, as much as possible, the discharge of untreated runoff to receiving bodies of water. The model was developed by considering the arrival of independent runoff events at the urban catchment. The process variables of event depth, duration, and interevent time were treated as independent, identically distributed random variables. A storage equation was formulated from which the probability of detention unit overflow was obtained. With this distribution it was possible to define the trap efficiency of the unit in terms of the long-term fraction of the runoff volume trapped by the storage unit. The trap efficiency expressions define storage/ treatment isoquants, which represent the combinations of storage capacity, treatment rate, and the sewer system runoff trapping capacity, which provide a fixed level of runoff control. A pollutant load model was also formulated, based on a first-order washoff model. This model was used to define pollutant control isoquants. Optimal values of the required storage capacity and treatment rate were obtained by treating the isoquants as production functions. Applying the results of production function theory, a cost minimization problem was solved for the value of the storage capacity and treatment rate, for prescribed runoff and pollutant trap efficiency levels. The results obtained with the statistical model compared well with results obtained from major simulation models. The statistical approach offers an advantage in that no simulation is required to obtain the isoquants, as the expressions are analytical, thus greatly simplifying the optimization process. Also, the evaluation of the storage unit pollutant trap efficiency can be easily evaluated for any type of pollutant whose washoff rate is known.

Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 1994.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Various aspects affecting the inlet capacities of modified stormwater kerb inlets were investigated. Investigations centred on the influence of effective inlet length, ratios of upstream transition section length to inlet section length and road crossfall. The suitability of existing design curves for use in the design of modified kerb inlets was verified and new more "user-friendly" design curves were developed. Attempts were made to develop a sound theoretical model to predict inlet capacities for stormwater kerb inlets as the lack of such a model had previously been identified as a major shortcoming in the design of stormwater kerb inlets. A detailed study of relevant literature and of various full scale model test results confirmed the fact that the effective inlet length is the most important variable affecting the inlet capacity at stormwater kerb inlets. Model studies on various combinations of transition section lengths and inlet section lengths have indicated that in the case of supercritical flow the inlet capacity of stormwater kerb inlets is not sensitive to changes in the ratio between the inlet section length and the upstream transition section length. Furthermore no marked effect on the inlet capacity of a modified stormwater kerb inlet was detected when the road crossfall was increased from 2% to 3%. The inlet capacities predicted by the existing design curves were found to be consistent, although on the conservative side, when compared to the inlet capacities obtained from the full scale model tests. New design curves derived from the existing design curves were developed to provide a less cumbersome procedure in the design of stormwater kerb inlets. The development of an improved comprehensive theoretical model based on pure hydraulic principles was not possible due to the extremely complex nature of flow conditions at stormwater kerb inlets. The most important findings emanating from this research project are: - The confirmation of the "effective inlet length” concept, whereby a part of the expensive inlet section is replaced by an equivalent length of inexpensive transition section upstream of the kerb inlet. which does not affect the inlet capacity of the kerb inlet negatively and thereby results in a substantial saving in the cost of stormwater kerb inlets. - Model tests revealed that for supercritical flows the upstream transition section can be made up to 6 times longer than the inlet section with a maximum length of 6m. without any negative effect on the inlet capacity of the kerb inlet. Similarly an analysis of previous research results has indicated that even in cases of subcritical flow the upstream transition section can be made twice the length of the inlet section. - The full scale model tests also indicated that an upward adjustment of 30% in the inlet capacities as predicted by the existing design curves was justified. The modified design curves proved to be suitable for the design of conventional stormwater kerb inlets as well as for modified stormwater kerb inlets where part of the inlet section is replaced by a transition section. A new set of "easy to use" design curves was developed specifically for urban applications. - Guidelines for determining upstream transition section lengths were drawn up for use in conjunction with the existing and new design curves for the design of stormwater kerb inlets.

Weekly collections were conducted from May to December, 2007 (153 trap nights, total) in Denton, Texas, in and around large storm drains and overpass drainage facilities in residential and non-residential areas, using Centers for Disease Control (CDC) light traps and gravid traps. A total of 1964 mosquitoes were collected, representing 24 species within 6 genera: Aedes, Anopheles, Culiseta, Culex, Psorophora, and Uranotaenia. Culex was the most abundant genus, representing 75% of all mosquitoes collected; Aedes was the second most abundant, representing 12 % of all mosquitoes collected. Cx. quinquefasciatus was the dominant species collected via gravid traps; Cx. (Melanoconion) species were the dominant species collected via CDC light traps. Data of gravid traps and light traps were analyzed separately using nonparametric correlation analysis, comparing environmental data and physical characteristics to total abundance of mosquitoes. There was no significant correlation found when comparing the three dominant species collected in light traps (unidentified Cx. (Melanoconion) sp, Cx. quinquefasciatus, and Ae. vexans) to environmental characteristics and physical characteristics. Analysis of Cx. quinquefasciatus collected in gravid traps indicated no significant correlation between abundance, environmental data, and physical characteristics. Linear regression models were analyzed to determine if either environmental variables or physical characteristics of the drainage system explained the species abundance collected; no individual variable showed an association of significance. Analysis of Cx. quinquefasciatus collected in storm drains via gravid traps determined temperature to be the most important variable in determining population abundance and explained 99% of the population variability.

All land uses affect storm water runoff However, different uses of the same site generate varying amounts of runoff Many communities have come to rely upon detention and/or retention basins for controlling the additional runoff resulting from land development. It is argued that this incremental approach to storm water management must be replaced with a more proactive long-term view.To achieve this, more user-friendly software capable of modeling the effect long-range land use plans have on the volume and behavior of storm water runoff is needed. This software, called a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS), must be capable of guiding the user, who may not be an expert at runoff analysis, through the process and also capable of generating output in various formats understandable by lay persons. This study utilizes a systems analysis technique to develop a theoretical framework for the Storm Water SDSS.

With it you can integrate a large number of variables and processes in order to obtain a dynamic view of such systems and assess their present and future conditions. This paper presents the results of modeling the bacteriological quality of the water in the coastal area of Fortaleza (Brazil), and against several entries contaminant loads in them. Fecal coliform, used as indicators of quality of bathing waters by Brazilian standards, were numerically modeled using SisBaHiA (System Base Environmental Hydrodynamics), using contaminant loads from three different sources: rivers, storm sewer and outfall . The models were implemented to represent the changes in decay forward to solar radiation and other environmental factors. Values were relatively close results between modeled and monitored in the field in different scenarios. The results showed that the storm sewers are the most important sources of pollution, accounting for episodes of non-compliance with water quality standards for bathing, especially during rainy periods. Moreover, the results showed no risk of the outfall plume reaching Fortaleza bath areas the city beaches. .

[Truncated abstract]This thesis investigates aspects of urban stormwater modeling and uses a small urban catchment (NE38) located in the suburb of Nedlands in Perth, Western Australia to do so. The MUSIC (Model for Urban Stormwater Improvement Conceptualisation) model was used to calibrate catchment NE38 using measured stormwater flows and rainfall data from within the catchment. MUSIC is a conceptual model designed to model stormwater flows within urban environments and uses a rainfall-runoff model adapted to generate results at six minute time steps. Various catchment scenarios, including the use of porous asphalt as an alternative road surface, were applied to the calibrated model to identify effective working stormwater disposal systems that differ from the current system. Calibrating catchment NE38 using the MUSIC model was attempted and this involved matching modeled stormwater flows to stormwater flows measured at the catchment drainage point. This was achieved by measuring runoff contributing areas (roads) together with rainfall data measured from within the catchment and altering the seepage constant parameter for all roadside infiltration sumps. ... The MUSIC model generated future scenario outcomes for alternative stormwater disposal systems that displayed similar or improved levels of performance with respect to the current system. The following scenarios listed in increasing order of effectiveness outline future stormwater disposal systems that may be considered in future urban design. 1. 35% porous asphalt application with no sumps in 2036 2. 35% porous asphalt application with no sumps in 2064 3. 68% porous asphalt application with no sumps in 2036 4. 68% porous asphalt application with no sumps in 2064. Future scenarios using the current stormwater disposal system (with roadside infiltration sumps) with porous asphalt were also run. These scenarios reduced stormwater runoff and contaminant loading on the catchment drainage point however the inclusion of a roadside infiltration sump system may not appeal to urban designers due to the costs involved with this scenario. Climate change will affect the design of future stormwater disposal systems and thus, the design of these systems must consider a rainfall reducing future. Based on the findings of this thesis, current stormwater runoff volumes entering catchment drainage points can be reduced together with contaminant loads in urban environments that incorporate porous asphalt with a stormwater disposal design system that is exclusive of roadside infiltration sumps.

Resumo:
The thesis covers the investigation of the storm water runoff and artificial recharge components of the Atlantis Water Resource Management Scheme in the Southwestern Cape. The objective of the study was to obtain an in-depth knowledge of the process of artificial recharge of urban storm water runoff, in order to identify the most efficient recharge management strategy for the Atlantis aquifer. To achieve the objective it was necessary to first study the existing knowledge on urban storm water hydrology and artificial recharge by spreading, and to create a conceptual model of what might be expected. The study area was then investigated to examine how closely the actual situation was reflected by the conceptual model, enabling recommendations to be made for the sound management of the system. The stormwater runoff component was found to differ from most urban hydrological studies as a result of its large baseflow component. The sandy nature of the catchment, small percentage area of effective impervious surface, and high groundwater table resulted in the baseflow constituting more than 40% of the total storm water runoff and accounting for over 60% of the pollution load. The "first flush" effect established as a major source of pollution in other studies, was found to be of minor significance in this study area. The overall stormwater quality (excluding the noxious industrial baseflow) was found acceptable for artificial recharge within the study area, although the baseflow from the industrial sub-catchments showed the potential for being a major source of pollution in the future. The treated wastewater used for artificial recharge prior to 1987 was found to be unacceptable for recharge purposes. The treated industrial effluent should under no circumstances be recharged up-gradient of the Witzand well field. The treated domestic effluent although of a poorer quality than the resident Witzand well field groundwater could be recharged in order to boost recharge volumes and form a buffer against further intrusion by the poor quality groundwater from the Brakkefontein area. This would however only be acceptable if strict water quality control is maintained and recharge does not take place west of the present basin. The recharge basin was found to be well situated with respect to influencing the Witzand wellfield and maintaining a groundwater buffer against poor quality groundwater flow from the northeast towards the central area of the wellfield. Unfortunately the surrounding low-lying topography and sandy retaining walls have resulted in return flow and raised groundwater-levels. The raised groundwater mound does not comply with the conceptual model and together with the sandy nature of the unsaturated zone resulted in less effective purification during infiltration. The practice of letting large portions of the basin floor dry-out during summer was shown to be beneficial and the periodic cleaning of the deeper portions of the basin essential. The artificially recharged water was found to have influenced the upper portion of the aquifer well beyond the West Coast Road. The study of groundwater quality being a good method for tracing artificially recharged water. The groundwater quality has improved as a result of artificial recharge since the removal of treated wastewater from the recharge basin. The groundwater was (ii) found to be very responsive to the slightest changes in recharge basin water quality or/and quantity. Management of the recharge basin therefore had to be very much of a compromise between qualitative and quantitative approaches. The present approach of recharging all the stormwater runoff throughout the year providing the most efficient compromise under the present conditions. The study revealed that the most efficient recharge management strategy would be the recharge of treated domestic sewage effluent in the present recharge basin and all residential storm water runoff plus industrial "storm flow" stormwater runoff in a new recharge basin located northwest of the present basin. Strict water quality control must be maintained on the water discharged into the basins and an annual wet/dry cycle implemented within the basins to boost infiltration. The entire system should continue being monitored to safe guard the groundwater resource from pollution and over exploitation.

The poor quality of many receiving waters has been attributed to the frequent operation of combined sewer overflows (C. S. O. s). As the existing need for overflow structures is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future it is imperative that these deleterious effects are minimised. The present study investigates the pollution performance of three common overflow structure designs (the stilling pond, the double high side weir and the double low side weir) and aims to institute a novel pollution monitoring methodology for combined sewer overflows. Four sites in the central Sheffield area were monitored for periods from 9 to 13 months (two high-side weirs, one low-side weir and a stilling pond). Each overflow was monitored with continuous flow measurement equipment and bottle samplers to obtain samples of sewage from the storm and dry weather flows. The bottle samples were analysed for suspended solids (SS), ash, BOD, COD, pH, conductivity and ammonia. Mesh bags and frames were also installed to trap the gross solids (solids with a median size>6mm) from the inflow and the spill flow. The stilling pond and the high side weirs were found to perform well hydraulically, limiting the flow to treatment to a steady maximum. The low side weir performed unsatisfactorily, hydraulically, as the flow to treatment rose as the incoming flow increased and, for some storm conditions, a hydraulic jump formed towards the downstream end of the chamber. The first foul flush was regularly observed at the stilling pond and low side weir sites. Peak concentrations for SS were found to be 600 times greater than the dry weather flow for the same time of day. The first foul flush was rarely observed at the other sites. For the majority of storms at each site the spill concentrations were of a similar magnitude to the inflow sample concentrations. However for a large minority of SS, BOD and COD samples, the concentrations of the spill samples were significantly less than the inflow samples. t-Tests suggested that at the stilling pond and high side weir sites there is a significant reduction in the spill sample concentrations for the water quality (bottle) samples. Although the load of material spilled during an overflow event was found to be small in comparison to the inflow load, large amounts of material were spilled to the watercourse during storm events at each of the sites investigated. The storm load entering the CSO was found to be considerably influenced by peak intensity of the storm at the stilling pond site and antecedent dry weather period at one of the high side weir sites. At the other sites a number of hydrological factors were found to be influential e. g. duration. It is thought that time of year may also be important factor as this influences the type of rainfall (its duration and intensity). The types of gross solid collected at each site were similar with leaf material and sanitary towels consistently being the major items in terms of total mass. The efficiency of the stilling pond and one of the high side weirs in retaining gross solids in the flow to treatment appeared to be explained by the flow split although for 5 of 14 storms at the stilling pond and 3 of 7 at the high side weir a treatment effect was observed. The treatment factors at the low side weir were noticeably less than those for the other three sites with all being less than unity (average 0.5). This suggests that the low side weir preferentially discharges gross solid material over the weir. The treatment factors at the other high side weir were low due to inadequate sampling of the spill flow.

Solids and phosphorus within urban stormwater have the potential to cause environmental damage to the ecological systems in freshwater streams and receiving waters. The evaluation of these pollutants is undertaken by physico-chemical monitoring programs which sample streamflow for laboratory assessment. These programs require assessment of a range of issues to allow development of a monitoring system design. Current monitoring approaches have limitations in the conditions under which data can be sampled and the extent of information which can be collected. The understanding of catchment storage and transportation behaviour as well as waterway processes provides opportunity to develop improved knowledge if system behaviour and the methods whereby assessment can be made using monitoring systems. Data sets from four monitoring programs covering a range of waterways in Pine Rivers Shire have been examined for the catchment characteristics which influence solids and phosphorus discharge behaviour and the potential for surrogate indicators to predict streamflow concentration. The study involved partitioning of the components based on the dissolved and particulate fractions and the flow condition. Suspended solids and particulate phosphorus were found to be determined by the extent of urbanisation and the magnitude of the flow event. Whereas dissolved solids and dissolved phosphorus were found to be a greater component of base flow delivered from subsurface movement. Surrogate indicators were evaluated as a technique to supplement key indicator analysis by providing a measurement technique which is site based or utilises less laboratory effort. The investigation of the physical and chemical behaviour of solids and phosphorus allowed the identification of a number of parameters with the potential for interrelationship. Relationships were developed for suspended and dissolved solids using turbidity and conductivity and for dissolved and particulate phosphorus using suspended and dissolved solids. The relationships were found to be generic in the case of solids determination and catchment specific for phosphorus. The relationships will allow enhancement of monitoring knowledge to provide increased information on spatial and temporal variation of indicator concentrations.

A model is developed, using a unit hydrograph approach for sewer flow synthesis and a simple mixing model to calculate the pollution load from combined sewer overflows, to simulate the long-term behaviour of storm overflows in combined sewerage systems. It is shown that this procedure synthesizes overflow operation characteristics to acceptable engineering accuracy, measured relative to the adopted standard for UK practice, namely predictions from the WALLRUS suite of engineer's software. This is achieved at only a small fraction of the computer runtime and so makes practicable a wide range of overflow performance and river impact studies using local rainfall records of unlimited extent. The model is applied successfully to three drainage networks. Results show that the model, COSSOM, achieves predictions with respect to runoff volume and overflow characteristics well within : 00 % of full. WALLRUS applications. Sensitivity studies demonstrate that performance of the model improves when catchment unit hydrographs are obtained, by preliminary application of WALLRUS using a rainfall intensity close to the maximum in the observed data and for rain duration close to the time of concentration of each sub-catchment under study. It is also shown that with little loss in accuracy relative to application of the WALLRUS approach for unit hydrograph development, COSSOM can be operated with other rainfall/runoff/pipeflow models.

Storm sewer systems play a very important role in urban areas. The design of a storm sewer system should be based on an appropriate level of preventing flooding. This thesis focuses on issues relevant to decision-making in storm sewer network design considering flood risk. Uncertainty analysis is often required in an integrated approach to a comprehensive assessment of flood risk. The first part of this thesis discusses the understanding and representation of uncertainty in general setting. It also develops methods for propagating uncertainty through a model under different situations when uncertainties are represented by various mathematical languages. The decision-making process for storm sewer network design considering flood risk is explored in this thesis. The pipe sizes and slopes of the network are determined for the design. Due to the uncertain character of the flood risk, the decision made is not unique but depends on the decision maker’s attitude towards risk. A flood risk based storm sewer network design method incorporating a multiple-objective optimization and a “choice” process is developed with different design criteria. The storm sewer network design considering flood risk can also be formed as a single-objective optimization provided that the decision criterion is given a priori. A framework for this approach with a single objective optimization is developed. The GA is adapted as the optimizer. The flood risk is evaluated with different methods either under several design storms or using sampling method. A method for generating samples represented by correlated variables is introduced. It is adapted from a literature method providing that the marginal distributions of variables as well as the correlations between them are known. The group method is developed aiming to facilitate the generation of correlated samples of large sizes. The method is successfully applied to the generation of rainfall event samples and the samples are used for storm sewer network design where the flood risk is evaluated with rainfall event samples.

Resumo:
Greater environmental considerations and the desire to reduce pollution overflows to watercourses are requiring engineers to develop a better understanding of the processes involved in pollution transport through sewer networks. Furthermore, developments in modelling techniques and computer power are allowing urban drainage modellers to increase the complexity of their software and so demand additional data that can be incorporated. Presently, an important aspect is quantifying the retention time and dispersion of pollutants entering an urban drainage system. Manholes provide a means of sewer access for maintenance and inspection. Under storm flow conditions they are liable to surcharge above the level of the pipe soffit. This creates a storage volume that has an impact on the longitudinal dispersion and travel time of soluble pollutants in sewer systems. A laboratory investigation has been completed to quantify these effects for various manhole configurations. These include step heights between the inlet and outlet pipes, benching and extreme high surcharge conditions. In addition, re·analysis of previously acquired data has allowed variations in manhole diameter to be considered. Numerical modelling using computational fluid dynamics, combined with laser light sheet visualisation of the flow structures within manholes, has provided greater insight into the processes causing longitudinal dispersion. The coefficients required for two existing longitudinal dispersion models, the advection dispersion equation and the aggregated dead zone model, have been determined by means of an optimisation process. This has been undertaken with computer software specifically written for the purpose. The technique adopted for optimisation is fully detailed. Final conclusions regarding the longitudinal dispersion due to surcharged manholes are presented.

In March 2003, many communities in Mississippi fell under National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) regulations and were required to develop Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs). This study surveyed those in charge of SWPPPs in Mississippis regulated communities to determine the knowledge, efforts, and associated expenses, of complying with Stormwater Phase II regulations as well as what attempts regulated communities made to include urban forestry in their SWPPPs. While results indicated that all respondents were compliant with Stormwater Phase II regulations, regulated communities can improve efforts in several areas to best mitigate stormwater runoff pollution (e.g., public education and urban forestry). Findings will be useful when presented to current and, soon to be, regulated communities in an educational and outreach effort to increase their knowledge levels, reduce incurred costs, increase the effectiveness of their SWPPP, and enhance their ability to utilize urban and community forests as a stormwater mitigation tool.

I programmet undersöktes två olika modeller över dagvattensystem.
The increased amount of impermeable surfaces in the cities creates a larger and faster runoff of rainwater into the drainage systems. Some of today's existing pipelines are not able to handle this increased amount of storm water. A quick and short term solution to solve this problem is to construct delaying reservoirs that unburden the drainage system. Up to this point, not enough studies have been conducted on the different effects that a placement of a reservoir brings to a drainage system. If incorrectly positioned, a reservoir built for delaying the flow of storm water from a section of a drainage system can, have a negative effect on the flow further down the system. This flow regulation can be harmful to the system when the delayed flow from the section can interact with the flood peak from another section and can cause flooding. The purpose of this report was to study if different placements of a reservoir had any effect on the flow in a storm water drainage system. The aim was to find places where a reservoir could be positioned to prevent the collaboration of peak flows.  This thesis was mainly conducted with the use of the hydraulic modeling program MIKE URBAN in which studies of two models are the bases of the results presented in this report. The results from the two models show that the placement of a reservoir in a drainage system has a large sway on how to avoid flooding. The least amount of floods was attained when the reservoir was placed in certain key positions in the drainage system. More time and resources should be devoted to further investigate the effect of a reservoir’s position and dimensions before being placed into a drainage system. This way, expenditures could be reduced and simultaneously future flooding avoided.

Washington D.C. has been ranked third among U.S. cities in terms of its percentage of youth who have reported a severe major depressive episode. Depression, stress, anxiety are the uninvited visitors of our day-to-day urban living. Most of the time we ignore our mental health unless we reach the threshold. We know nature is the best healer. The District also has reported the highest percentage of parkland but this statistic is not helping regarding Healing and Wellness. There might be a missing piece of the puzzle to reconnect with nature. To dive deep into the missing piece, I have looked back to the basics, into the four elements of the planet, Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. This thesis is an exploration of the most important natural element, Water, along with the other three elements, as active participants in our everyday urban life, not only as a means of reconnecting with nature but also aiding with natural healing to our depressed, tired soul. As with many other older cities, Washington D.C. mostly depends on the combined storm and sanitary sewer. During heavy rainfall, stormwater overflows the capacity of the sewage system and empties into the river with sewage. But there is an opportunity for the stormwater to be treated and reused at the site. Rainwater along with tapped groundwater as the perennial flow will be considered as the source of healing water in the dense downtown context of the District. The thesis will tell the story of the arrival of Water into the middle of the city.
