Extracellular nucleotides cause elevation of cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) in osteoclasts, although the sources of Ca2+ are uncertain. Activation of P2Y receptors causes Ca2+ release from stores, whereas P2X receptors are ligand-gated channels that mediate Ca2+ influx in some cell types. To examine the sources of Ca2+, we studied osteoclasts from rat and rabbit using fura 2 fluorescence and patch clamp. Nucleotide-induced rise of [Ca2+]ipersisted on removal of extracellular Ca2+(Ca[Formula: see text]), indicating involvement of stores. Inhibition of phospholipase C (PLC) with U-73122 or inhibition of endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase with cyclopiazonic acid or thapsigargin abolished the rise of [Ca2+]i. After store depletion in the absence of Ca[Formula: see text], addition of Ca[Formula: see text] led to a rise of [Ca2+]i consistent with store-operated Ca2+ influx. Store-operated Ca2+ influx was greater at negative potentials and was blocked by La3+. In patch-clamp studies where PLC was blocked, ATP induced inward current indicating activation of P2X4 nucleotide receptors, but with no rise of [Ca2+]i. We conclude that nucleotide-induced elevation of [Ca2+]i in osteoclasts arises primarily through activation of P2Y nucleotide receptors, leading to release of Ca2+ from intracellular stores.

A rise in cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]cyt) due to Ca2+ release from intracellular Ca2+ stores and Ca2+ influx through plasmalemmal Ca2+ channels plays a critical role in mitogen-mediated cell growth. Depletion of intracellular Ca2+ stores triggers capacitative Ca2+ entry (CCE), a mechanism involved in maintaining Ca2+ influx and refilling intracellular Ca2+ stores. Transient receptor potential ( TRP) genes have been demonstrated to encode the store-operated Ca2+ channels that are activated by Ca2+ store depletion. In this study, we examined whether CCE, activity of store-operated Ca2+ channels, and human TRP1 ( hTRP1) expression are essential in human pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cell (PASMC) proliferation. Chelation of extracellular Ca2+ and depletion of intracellularly stored Ca2+ inhibited PASMC growth in media containing serum and growth factors. Resting [Ca2+]cyt as well as the increases in [Ca2+]cyt due to Ca2+ release and CCE were all significantly greater in proliferating PASMC than in growth-arrested cells. Consistently, whole cell inward currents activated by depletion of intracellular Ca2+ stores and the mRNA level of hTRP1 were much greater in proliferating PASMC than in growth-arrested cells. These results suggest that elevated [Ca2+]cyt and intracellularly stored [Ca2+] play an important role in pulmonary vascular smooth muscle cell growth. CCE, potentially via hTRP1-encoded Ca2+-permeable channels, may be an important mechanism required to maintain the elevated [Ca2+]cyt and stored [Ca2+] in human PASMC during proliferation.

Agonist-induced increases in cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]cyt) in pulmonary artery (PA) smooth muscle cells (SMCs) consist of a transient Ca2+ release from intracellular stores followed by a sustained Ca2+ influx. Depletion of intracellular Ca2+ stores triggers capacitative Ca2+ entry (CCE), which contributes to the sustained increase in [Ca2+]cyt and the refilling of Ca2+ into the stores. In isolated PAs superfused with Ca2+-free solution, phenylephrine induced a transient contraction, apparently by a rise in [Ca2+]cyt due to Ca2+ release from the intracellular stores. The transient contraction lasted for 3–4 min until the Ca2+ store was depleted. Restoration of extracellular Ca2+ in the presence of phentolamine produced a contraction potentially due to a rise in [Ca2+]cyt via CCE. The store-operated Ca2+ channel blocker Ni2+ reduced the store depletion-activated Ca2+ currents, decreased CCE, and inhibited the CCE-mediated contraction. In single PASMCs, we identified, using RT-PCR, five transient receptor potential gene transcripts. These results suggest that CCE, potentially through transient receptor potential-encoded Ca2+ channels, plays an important role in agonist-mediated PA contraction.

Previous studies have shown that, in acutely dispersed canine pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs), depletion of both functionally independent inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3)- and ryanodine-sensitive Ca2+ stores activates capacitative Ca2+ entry (CCE). The present study aimed to determine if cell culture modifies intracellular Ca2+ stores and alters Ca2+ entry pathways caused by store depletion and hypoxia in canine PASMCs. Intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) was measured in fura 2-loaded cells. Mn2+ quench of fura 2 signal was performed to study divalent cation entry, and the effects of hypoxia were examined under oxygen tension of 15–18 mmHg. In acutely isolated PASMCs, depletion of IP3-sensitive Ca2+ stores with cyclopiazonic acid (CPA) did not affect initial caffeine-induced intracellular Ca2+ transients but abolished 5-HT-induced Ca2+ transients. In contrast, CPA significantly reduced caffeine- and 5-HT-induced Ca2+ transients in cultured PASMCs. In cultured PASMCs, store depletion or hypoxia caused a transient followed by a sustained rise in [Ca2+]i. The transient rise in [Ca2+]i was partially inhibited by nifedipine, whereas the nifedipine-insensitive transient rise in [Ca2+]i was inhibited by KB-R7943, a selective inhibitor of reverse mode Na+/Ca2+ exchanger (NCX). The nifedipine-insensitive sustained rise in [Ca2+]i was inhibited by SKF-96365, Ni2+, La3+, and Gd3+. In addition, store depletion or hypoxia increased the rate of Mn2+ quench of fura 2 fluorescence that was also inhibited by these blockers, exhibiting pharmacological properties characteristic of CCE. We conclude that cell culture of canine PASMCs reorganizes IP3 and ryanodine receptors into a common intracellular Ca2+ compartment, and depletion of this store or hypoxia activates voltage-operated Ca2+ entry, reverse mode NCX, and CCE.

Peptides containing Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) immobilized on beads bind to integrins and trigger biphasic, transient increases in intracellular free Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) in Madin-Darby canine kidney epithelial cells. The [Ca2+]i increase participates in feedback regulation of integrin-mediated adhesion in these cells. We examined influx pathways and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3)-mediated Ca2+ store release as possible sources of the [Ca2+]i rise. The RGD-induced [Ca2+]i response requires external Ca2+ (threshold approximately 150 microM), and its magnitude is proportional to extracellular calcium. RGD-induced transients were attenuated by Ca2+ channel inhibitors (Ni2+ and carboxy-amidotriazole) or by plasma membrane depolarization, indicating that Ca2+ influx contributes to the response. Loading cells with heparin reduced the size of RGD-induced [Ca2+]i transients, indicating that IP3-mediated release of Ca2+ from stores may also contribute to the RGD response. Depletion of Ca2+ stores with thapsigargin activated Ni(2+)-sensitive Ca2+ influx that might also be expected to occur after IP3-mediated depletion of stored Ca2-. However, RGD elicited a Ni(2+)-sensitive Ca2+ influx even after pretreatment with thapsigargin, indicating that Ca2+ influx is controlled by a mechanism independent of IP3-mediated store depletion. We conclude that RGD-induced [Ca2+]i transients in Madin-Darby canine kidney cells result primarily from the combination of two distinct mechanisms: 1) IP3-mediated release of intracellular stores, and 2) activation of a Ca2+ influx pathway regulated independently of IP3 and Ca2+ store release. Because Ni2+ and carboxy-amidotriazole inhibited adhesion, whereas store depletion with thapsigargin had little effect, we suggest that the Ca2+ influx mechanism is most important for feedback regulation of integrin-mediated adhesion by increased [Ca2+]i.

The case study of Bresee's Department Store in Oneonta, New York, suggests that small-town department stores were not necessarily fully “modern” by the early twentieth century. This article demonstrates how modern, big-store, business methods came later and documents how earlier modes of trade, such as credit and bartering, persisted into the early twentieth century, even in non-rural, northern contexts. Preliminary findings suggest that eliminating the urban bias in much historiography by including small-town retailing practices may lead to a later periodization of American consumer society.

Purpose – Cosmopolitanism is on the rise in India and traditionally shoppers have been known to patronize local stores. There is a need therefore to see the effect of cosmopolitanism and culture in context of loyalty towards local stores. Grocery items constitute major portion of purchase from local stores, therefore, pricing was also considered as a variable affecting store loyalty. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach – The paper used conclusive approach using a structured questionnaire for survey. The sample consisted of 710 respondents. There was almost an equal representation of both genders and also of metropolitan and non-metropolitan consumers. Findings – Culture and price affected local store loyalty directly. Cosmopolitanism was not found to have direct effect on loyalty. Within cultural dimensions, masculinity emerged as the most dominating trait. Minor modifications in cultural scale and major modifications in local store loyalty and cosmopolitanism are also suggested. Research limitations/implications – The study focuses only on three factors: price, culture, and cosmopolitanism. It does not examine influence of variables like personal values, lifestyle, and personality on local store loyalty behaviour. The research did not examine relationship between nature and type of product purchase decisions and its impact on store choice. Practical implications – Local stores need not be unduly worried with the incoming of organized players. The organized players should try to be cheaper and learn some tactics of local stores like customization, etc. There is a case for allowing FDI in multi-brand retail. Originality/value – Cosmopolitanism not affecting the local store loyalty directly is the original contribution of the paper. The finding casts doubts on the growth strategy of organized retailers who are opening new stores with the thinking that cosmopolitan consumer will shop from them instead of local retailers.

Future architectural relics are everywhere, manifest in the ultimately unsustainable patterns many American communities have replicated - endless weed-infested parking lots, decrepit malls, the abandoned Walmart glowering across the street at the even bigger Super Walmart. Gone are many of the small, independently owned businesses that lined main streets in small and medium-sized communities across the country, rendered relics by shopping malls lauding big-name brands or cheap products. Malls, too, may be on their way to becoming relics, due in part to the Internet and The Great Recession. However, architectural relics in the form of big box stores have haunted the American landscape since 1964. These box-like, impossibly large structures continue to be built, only to stand empty several years later when an even larger store model is constructed. The country is facing a new obsolescence of extravagance. No longer can our floundering economy support an infinite boom of boxes. Every new big box is a future relic. While many architectural and cultural historians such as Richard Longstreth, David Smiley, and Neil Harris have dissected the relic of the American shopping mall, few have grappled with the ubiquity of the big box store and how this structural form has departed from a longstanding tradition of retail architectural design. In this thesis, I analyze the factors have contributed to the rise and fall of these creaking behemoths of retail architecture. Ultimately, I contend that big box stores mark a stark departure in architectural theory and practice, and that this departure has manifested in a multitude of cultural, economic, and environmental consequences.

Globalization has influenced the grocery retail industry and the most impactful changes are the preferences and habits of consumers. The increased consumption of consumers is one of the habits that have created a demand for sustainable products. The sustainable products can be marketed towards consumers by the frontline employees. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how grocery retail store personnel can be used as ambassadors toward consumers that will result in sustainable purchase behaviour. To answer the research question, several interviews have been conducted. The interview with the grocery retail expert aided us in the formulation of interview questions. The four interviews with two ICA stores’ personnel provided us with the empirical data needed for reaching the conclusions. Findings reveal that the involvement of personnel in communication with the consumers has positive a positive outcome. In this way, they can be seen as CSR ambassadors and, therefore, efficiently market the organization. To achieve CSR ambassadorship, employees and consumers must enhance organizational identification. One conclusion is that consumers may reach sustainable purchase behaviour when CSR ambassadorship is developed in coherence with a grocery retail store.

The aim of this research is to seek to situate women in the development of consumer culture in Japan in the period 1900-1930. This period saw the beginnings of mass consumption and the rise of what was to become one of its central institutions, the department store. One of the most important department stores to emerge was Mitsukoshi, which provided a site in which the new tastes and lifestyles of consumer culture and western modernity could be looked at, sampled and practiced. In effect the store could be seen as providing a new form of 'intimate public sphere' for women. Mitsukoshi also provided images and information on the new consumer culture classifications and learning processes through its house magazines. Other magazines, especially women's magazines, whose readership rapidly expanded in this period, reinforced this message. The extent to which women were seen as the central operators of the emerging consumer culture is a central focus of the thesis. The department stores were not only spaces for women to consume, but also to work. The emergence of saleswomen as a new category of working woman is also discussed. The ways in which an image of a new women emerged as they became employed in greater numbers in the new service occupations and became more visible in the city centre streets and consumption and entertainment sites, is also considered. One variant here was the 'modem girl,' whose image was both discussed and constructed in the media by intellectuals, writers and cultural intermediaries. One of the aims of this work is to sketch out the parameters of this process in Japan and ask how far the stores and other new urban spaces, along with the mediated sources such as magazines, newspapers and the cinema, helped to further some shift (however limited and temporary) in the balance of power between the sexes towards women, along with a concomitant redefinition of what it meant to be a women. The new woman, then, occupied a contested space which a number of parties sought to define: the consumer culture industries such as the department stores, press and cinema; the government with its various thrift and everyday life reform campaigns designed to keep women in the home, albeit as skilled housewives; the various movements for greater women's rights and reform, both in the middle class and the working class militant women workers; the intellectuals and cultural intermediaries, some of whom saw the 'modem girl,' as a new exciting phenomenon of urban modernity; and, of course, the women themselves, who not only reacted to these forces, but gained in their capacity and desire to have a greater say in the process and control over their own lives

This thesis is a study of the Korean retailing sector since the 1970s. It focuses on analysis of the three elements in retailing development - government, retailer and consumer - which engaged in a process of mutual interaction. It is used to address two main questions, namely why was the leading role of the department store in the Korean consumer market delayed, and why was its golden age both quite explosive and extremely short. The thesis argues that the emergence of modern retail formats in Korea was artificially delayed through consumption repression. It also argues that the explosive golden age of the department store industry was a result of the combination of two sets of behaviour: a strategic change by the department stores to focussing on necessities rather than luxuries; and the enthusiastic consumption attitude of consumers in response to previous consumption repression and consequent purchasing power. It shows that the short golden age of the department store industry was in addition closely related to the ownership structure of the big retail businesses which also owned other types of retail format. Companies made strategic decisions that led to the Korean department store sector moving back into the luxury market and giving the existing mass market up. The research also examined the application of the conflict theory of retail evolution to Korea, and the thesis argues that this theory is of limited applicability. Under Korean conditions of ownership, the evolution of retailing, particularly the department store format, was likely to depend not on competition and conflict between different types of retail format, but on mutual cooperation for the profit maximisation of the big retail businesses. The thesis also considers consumption as a criterion of equality or inequality, and argues that consumption should be regarded as a factor that had a huge effect on people's willingness to comply with the prevailing economic system.

The aim was to carefully distinguish between the new and the original part of the building for the present pleasant correspondence with the surrounding historicist facades. This was mostly achieved through inclined and curved shapes with which functionalism rarely worked. Operation in new part is provided by a vertical communication tube, whose facade is composed of a vertical garden, which should contribute to the improvement of living conditions in densely built-up city center. The building is located in the center of city there are high demands for its multipurpose use. Shops, services and catering operations are situated in the lower part of the building. Regardless of how well we implement sustainability plans, now and in the future, the weight of scientific evidence indicates that mean sea level will continue to rise at an increasing rate over the next century. Thus, coastal lands and development lie in a precarious position, increasingly vulnerable to flood damage brought by storm surges and extreme weather events. In order to avoid disastrous losses of property, life, ecological health and social wellbeing, our cities and regions must quickly implement adaptation plans that consider plausible climate models. Coastal risk can be managed through rigid protections, soft landscape solutions, and land use decisions and regulations. In developing and implementing adaptation plans, it is important to understand the options and their applicability to different site contexts. Experts warn that today's once-in-a century flood will likely occur every two or three years by 2050!' However, Boston, like many other U.S. coastal cities, is in the early stages of devising adaptation plans that seek to reduce coastal flood risk from sea level rise. As implementation of adaptation plans may take several years or decades, Boston should act quickly to strategically consider its options. This thesis examines the effectiveness of different planning approaches to hazard mitigation in urban coastal areas and applies them to at-risk sites in East Boston under coastal flood scenarios for the years 2050 and 2100. Two sites in East Boston, one with a soft edge and one with a hard edge, create two distinct urban landscapes for design solutions.
(cont.) A menu of planning solutions that has been collected from a review of the literature and best practices is then used to inform design solutions to these problems. By applying contemporary predictions for sea level rise and the problem-specific expertise of coastal management to the site-specific realm of land use planning, I hope to provide a precedent and method for planners, particularly in the Boston area, to seriously incorporate sea level rise predictions into community discussions, regulations, and comprehensive plan making.

The subject of this thesis is an analysis of sorne models for portfolios of credit risks, with a special attention to the tools used in them to model the dependence between individuai defaults, which is one of the main concerns in credit risk modeling and rnanagement. We will especially focus our attention to son1e rnodels for several groups of exchangeable risks; in particular we will tackle the problerns related to the rnaxirnum likelihood estimation of the pararneters involved, and to this purpose we introduce an approach based on the utilization of the Expetation-Maximization algoritlun. In the first chapter we introduce the rnain rnathernatical tools used in the the thesis. We describe briefly the theory of exchangeable sequences of randorn variables and we show a proof, for the case of randorn vectors, of the main result about them, the De Finetti's theoren1. Then we introduce the concept of copula and we present the Sklar's theorem, showing how it works in the case of continuous distribution functions. Through sorne examples we illustrate how copulas can be used to describe the dependence structures in rnultivariate distributions. We also show how it is possible to express in a natural way the coefficient of tail dependence, an alternative measure of dependence between random variables, by mean of copulas. In the second chapter we review the two most cornrnon classes of rnodels for dependent credit risks, the latent variables rnodels and the Bernoulli rnixture models. We see how essentially alllatent variables models are based on the Gaussian copula, and we ci te an example of a generalization to a more generai dependence structure. Then we show some exarnples of Bernoulli rnixture models, and we present a simple result that allows to rewrite latent variable models as Bernoulli mixture ones. At the end of the chapter we introduce the first model for several exchangeable groups of risks that we will study in detail in the following. In the third chapter we analyze the two rnodels on which we have devoted the rnajor attention: the multidimensional and iterative urn schernes. They are two examples of rnulti factors Bernoulli mixture models whose dependence structure is introduced by generalizations of the Pòlya urn scheme, in such a way that it allows for dependence both in the same rating group and in different rating groups, introducing then some form of contagion between defaults. For both of them, by using the tools of the theory about exchangeable sequences of random variables, we derive the expression of the joint default probability for the number of defaults in the different rating groups. The cornplexity involved in the statistica! estimation of the parameters of these models lead us to introduce the Expectation-11axirnization algorithm for iterative rnaximum likelihood estimations, which is the subject of chapter four. We briefly present the generai theory about it, and then show how to apply it in the case of the three models considered. In the fifth chapter we face the technical aspects of the irnplernentation of the algorithm and present the results obtained, discussing about advantages and disadvantages of the use of the algorithrn. In the last chapter we plot sorne graphics to compare qualitatively the rnodels and to analyze their capacity of expressing the dependence between defaults in different rating classes.

AbstractWith the annexation of the Sudetenland in 1938, swiftly followed by German occupation of all the Czech lands in 1939, Herwig’s childhood idyll came to a brutal end. The unstable peace that had prevailed since the largely German-speaking borderlands had been assigned to the newly established Czechoslovakia at the end of the First World War had started to crumble, with the rise of German nationalism translating into electoral success in 1935. The young Herwig had been sheltered from these developments, but by the time he began his final year at the LandskronGymnasium, an air of anxiety was spreading across Europe. Herwig had little doubt what lay in store for him following his graduation. It was therefore with some trepidation that he packed his bags in March 1942 and left for a small village near Breslau.

AbstractThe rise of new technologies has led to a growth in the number of 3D models. They can come from various source, hence they are heterogeneous and complex. The level of 3D data access is often a function of the user’s expertise since the 3D data are often registered to different file formats. Some file formats do not show the data tree, as IGES. For using information inside a 3D model, that does not show a data tree, each company adopts his own system that will allow him to access easily to 3D model in order to exploit the hidden knowledge within the models. In this article, we are going to speak about technologies that helps user to exploit and knowledge coming from different file formats. In addition, we are going to present a system named VAQUERO that uses ontology to access, store and share knowledge coming from 3D models.

It’s a cliché hardly worth noting. Big box stores swoop into new territory, push out smaller mom-and-pop stores, creating a homogenous, ubiquitous condition that erases local culture and disrupts economies. While sharing some of these same familiar dynamics, however, the “small box” poses a unique threat to the vibrancy of local communities.Dollar General is a key example of the small box. Its 7,400 square foot stores are instantiations of an interconnected infrastructure of distribution centers and interstate highways. This system’s efficiency allows each Dollar General store to capitalize on its context while thriving with an extreme amount of resiliency in conditions that other businesses and wholesalers find untenable. This allows Dollar General to wield considerable control over the towns and communities it infiltrates, making it a power center packaged in the small box, leveraging a nostalgia for the general store. This paper synthesizes work from an undergraduate design studio with faculty research that investigates a specific Dollar General location in a dying retail center. The specificity of this context reveals DG’s power in overcoming many common limitations of retail development. Utilizing James Corner’s ideas on mapping and Fumihiko Maki’s concepts of collective form, the work investigates the impacts the small box has on local communities, and imagines how architecture and its discourse on the city can develop productive responses. Architecture can make a unique contribution to understanding how and why this condition occurs and arm future practitioners and researchers with the tools they need to be projectively critical of the ever-changing urban context.

With the fast development of IoT technologies and the potential of real-time data gathering, allowing decision makers to take advantage of real-time visibility on their processes, the rise of Digital Twins (DT) has attracted several research interests. DT are among the highest technological trends for the near future and their evolution is expected to transform the face of several industries and applications and opens the door to a huge number of possibilities. However, DT concept application remains at a cradle stage and it is mainly restricted to the manufacturing sector. In fact, its true potential will be revealed in many other sectors. In this research paper, we aim to propose a DT prototype for instore daily operations management and test its impact on daily operations management performances. More specifically, for this specific research work, we focus the impact analysis of DT in the fitting rooms’ area.

Data privacy in the cloud is a big concern for all of its users, especially for public clouds. Modern trends in studies utilise multiple clouds to achieve data privacy protection. Most of the present studies focus on business-oriented solutions, but current study aims to create a solution for individual users which would not increase the cost of ownership, and provide enough flexibility and privacy protection by combining password protection, key-derivation, multilayer encryption and key distribution across multiple clouds. New design allows to use single cloud to store protected user data, meanwhile use free plans on other clouds to store key information on others and thereby does not rise a cost of the solution. As a result, proposed design gives multiple layers of protection of Data Privacy while having a low cost of use. With some further adaptation it could be proposed as a business solution.

Energy consumption by the network infrastructure is growing expeditiously with the rise of the Internet. Critical research efforts have been pursued by academia, industry and governments to make networks, such as the Internet, operate more energy efficiently and reduce their power consumption. This work presents an in-depth survey of the approaches to reduce energy consumption in wired networks by first categorizing existing research into broad categories and then presenting the specific techniques, research challenges, and important conclusions. At abroad level, we present five categories of approaches for energy efficiency in wired networks – (i) sleeping of network elements, (ii) link rate adaptation, (iii) proxying, (iv) store and forward, and (v) network traffic aggregation. Additionally, this survey reviews work in energy modeling and measurement, energy-related standards and metrics, and enumerates discussion points for future work and motivations.

A rapid rise in demands for thermal comfort in the building sector necessitates higher energy consumption for air conditioning, ventilation, space, and water heating systems. Recently, phase change materials (PCMs) have gained much attention from researchers for passive heating/cooling of space and water. PCM can store/release thermal energy as latent heat during its phase change process isothermally. Moreover, PCM facilitates solar energy harvesting by photothermal conversion and storage. However, major limitations of PCM include low thermal conductivity, leakage during phase change, and lack of photoabsorbance. Therefore, in this study, the shape-stabilized phase change composites were prepared by melt blending of Paraffin Wax (PW), Tetra Pak (TP), and expanded graphite (EG). PW is an organic PCM, widely being studied due to its high enthalpy, availability at various melting points, and chemical and thermal stability. In addition to providing shape stability and thermal conductivity enhancement of PCM, the usage of TP promotes the recycling of TP waste into useful products. The addition of EG contributes to the thermal conductivity increase of 3.6 times that of pure PW. Moreover, the excellent photoabsorption of EG and TP effectively converted the photo energy to thermal energy and stored it as latent heat by PW in the composite. Two types of composites using PW of melting points 44 ℃ and 64 ℃ were exhibited a photothermal conversion and storage efficiency of 80 and 55 %, respectively and which is promising for solar water heating applications.

Multiple official documents from various departments have contributed to the rising number of printed pages in construction projects. The dominant explanation for this trend is that printed pages have a direct relationship with the progression of the project as the number of quality assurance, quality control documents, health and safety documents, technical documents, lean and enhancement documents, and store documents get increased with the project timeline. The research data was obtained from one of the infrastructure projects in the north of Qatar between 2020 and 2023 and in line with multiple academic references as listed in the last section of the paper (Ågren, 2014). Contrary to what has often been assumed, the rise in printed pages due to mentioned documents contributes to impacting the earth’s environment badly, affecting global warming, cutting additional trees from green lands, reducing project KPIs, increasing overall project budget cost, and generating material waste. Lean enhancement engineers proposed replacing all the above-mentioned documents to be used in the digital format.

Low energy efficiency and high installed cost are the two main problems that prevent water hydraulics to be popular in application. This research introduces two novel systems: water hydraulic fluid switching transmission (FST) and pump motor transmission (PMT) that only use cheap ON/OFF valves for lessening the initial cost and reducing the energy consumption; beside, this paper also introduces a conventional servo motor system (SMS) for comparison. Moreover, both FST and PMT systems can recover the kinetic energy of a flywheel in a deceleration process and store it into an accumulator for using in the next working cycle. The experimental results show that the FST system only need from 33.2 to 47.3% of total energy consumption of the SMS to complete a full cycle and even much reducing in PMT system with the reduction from 76.0 to 86.0%. A method to estimate the saved energy stored in the accumulator will be introduced in this study as well and found out that from 8.2 to 11.6% and from 8.7 to 13.7% of the total energy consumption of the FST and PMT systems were recovered. The SMS shows advantage in transient response with the shortest rise time and smallest overshoot while the steady state error is only slightly smaller than the PMT system. The steady state error of FST system is quite large, but it keeps almost same value for all reference velocity; thus, such system is appropriate for applying in high velocity systems. With acceptable velocity response and extremely improving in energy efficiency, the PMT system is promising to replace conventional water hydraulic system in many applications.

The South Atlantic Coastal Study (SACS) was completed by the US Army Corps of Engineers to quantify storm surge and wave hazards allowing for the expansion of the Coastal Hazards System (CHS) to the South Atlantic Division (SAD) domain. The goal of the CHS-SACS was to quantify coastal storm hazards for present conditions and future sea level rise (SLR) scenarios to aid in reducing flooding risk and increasing resiliency in coastal environments. CHS-SACS was completed for three regions within the SAD domain, and this report focuses on the Coastal Hazards System–Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands (CHS-PR). This study applied the CHS Probabilistic Coastal Hazard Analysis (PCHA) framework for quantifying tropical cyclone (TC) responses, leveraging new atmospheric and hydrodynamic numerical model simulations of synthetic TCs developed explicitly for the CHS-PR region. This report focuses on documenting the PCHA conducted for CHS-PR, including the characterization of storm climate, storm sampling, storm recurrence rate estimation, marginal distributions, correlation and dependence structure of TC atmospheric-forcing parameters, development of augmented storm suites, and assignment of discrete storm weights to the synthetic TCs. As part of CHS-PR, coastal hazards were estimated for annual exceedance frequencies over the range of 10 yr⁻¹ to 10⁻⁴ yr⁻¹.

The US Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, is executing the Coastal Texas Protection and Restoration Feasibility Study coastal storm risk management (CSRM) project for the region. The project is currently in the feasibility phase. The primary goal is to develop CSRM measures that maximize national net economic development benefits. This report documents the coastal storm water level and wave hazard, including sea level rise, for a variety of flood risk management alternatives. Four beach restoration alternatives for Galveston Island and Bolivar peninsula were evaluated. Suites of synthetic tropical and historical non-tropical storms were developed and modeled. The CSTORM coupled surge-and-wave modeling system was used to accurately characterize storm circulation, water level, and wave hazards using new model meshes developed from high-resolution land and sub-aqueous surveys for with- and without-project scenarios. Beach morphology stochastic response was modeled with a Monte Carlo life-cycle simulation approach using the CSHORE morphological evolution numerical model embedded in the StormSim stochastic modeling system. Morphological and hydrodynamic response were primarily characterized with probability distributions of the number of rehabilitations and overflow.

Mountain regions are known as the “water towers of the world” for their capacity to store freshwater in glaciers. River basins with glaciers on their headwaters benefit from water stored as ice, representing a regulating water source for downstream river flow, particularly during the summer and in dry periods, especially in times of drought. However, human-induced global warming has caused glaciers to retreat, meaning the ice mass that has formed over many years melts faster than snowfall can replace. Currently, glaciers are melting at double the speed they have in the past two decades, with ever decreasing water availability for those that depend on glacial meltwater for their lives. This technical background report for the 2023 edition of the Interconnected Disaster Risks report analyses the root causes, drivers, impacts and potential solutions for the mountain glaciers melting risk tipping point our world is facing through an analysis of academic literature, media articles and expert interviews.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is investigating a spike in Salmonella cases in the UK linked to the consumption of coated frozen chicken products. In March 2021, FSA, in collaboration with Food Standards Scotland (FSS) commissioned Ipsos MORI to conduct an online survey in order to identify consumer behaviours which could increase their risk to foodborne disease. The key research questions were: •Which consumers are purchasing coated frozen chicken products? •How do consumers store and cook these products? •Do consumers follow packaging instructions when cooking and storing these products?•Are consumers putting themselves at risk of Salmonellain the way they, store, cook and handle these products? •Do consumers take appropriate action to protect themselves from risk by washing their hands, and avoiding cross-contamination when handling these products? •Do children (aged 12 or under) or teenagers (aged 13-15) handle and cook these products?

The US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL) expanded the Coastal Hazards System (CHS) to quantify storm surge and wave hazards for coastal Louisiana. The CHS Louisiana (CHS-LA) coastal study was sponsored by the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) and the New Orleans District (MVN), US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to support Louisiana’s critical coastal infrastructure and to ensure the effectiveness of coastal storm risk management projects. The CHS-LA applied the CHS Probabilistic Coastal Hazard Analysis (PCHA) framework to quantify tropical cyclone (TC) responses, leveraging new atmospheric and hydrodynamic numerical model simulations of synthetic TCs developed explicitly for the Louisiana region. This report focuses on documenting the PCHA conducted for the CHS-LA, including details related to the characterization of storm climate, storm sampling, storm recurrence rate estimation, marginal distributions, correlation and dependence structure of TC atmospheric-forcing parameters, development of augmented storm suites, and assignment of discrete storm weights to the synthetic TCs. As part of CHS-LA, coastal hazards were estimated within the study area for annual exceedance frequencies (AEFs) over the range of 10 yr-1 to 1×10-4 yr-1.

The purpose of this Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering technical note (CHETN) is to describe how historic Automatic Identification System (AIS) vessel position data were used to identify a design vessel for use in a storm surge barrier design study. Specifically, this CHETN describes how the AIS data were accessed, how the universe of vessel data was refined to allow for design vessel selection, and how that selection was used in a storm surge barrier (SSB) study. This CHETN draws upon the New Jersey Back Bays Coastal Storm Risk Management Feasibility Study (USACE-NAP 2019), specifically the Appendix B.2 Engineering Appendix Civil document1. The New Jersey Back Bays Study itself builds upon the work of the North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study (NACCS) initiated after Hurricane Sandy in 2012 (USACE 2015a).

This study examines the potential impact of sea level rise (SLR) caused by climate change on the effects of extratropical cyclones, also known as nor?easters, in four New England coastal parks: Acadia National Park (ACAD), Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area (BOHA), Boston National Historical Park (BOST) and Cape Cod National Seashore (CACO). A multi-method approach is employed, including a literature review, observational data analysis, coupled hydrodynamic-wave numerical modeling, 3D visualizations, and communication of findings. The literature review examines previous studies of nor?easters and associated storm surges in New England and SLR projections across the study domain due to climate change. The observational data analysis evaluates the characteristics of nor?easters and their effects, providing a basis for validating the model. Numerical modeling is performed using the Advanced Circulation (ADCIRC) model, coupled with the Simulating Waves in the Nearshore (SWAN) model to simulate storm surges and waves. The model was validated against available observations and demonstrated its ability to simulate water levels, inland inundation, and wave heights in the study area with high accuracy. The validated model was used to simulate three powerful nor?easters (April 2007, January 2018, and March 2018) and each storm was simulated for three sea levels, (1) a baseline mean sea level representative of the year 2020, as well as with a (2) 1 ft of SLR and (3) 1 m of SLR. Analysis of the model output was used to assess the vulnerability of the parks to nor?easters by examining peak impacts in the park areas. Additional simulations were conducted to evaluate the role of waves in predicting peak water levels and the impact of inlet configurations on storm surges within coastal embayments behind the barrier beach systems in the southern Cape Cod region. The project developed maps, three-dimensional visualizations, and an interpretive film to assist the parks in planning for resource management, maintenance, emergency management, visitor access, safety, education, and outreach. These tools provide a better understanding of the potential impacts of nor?easters and SLR and enable the parks to better prepare for future storms.
