Resumo:
When an electrochemical energy storage is used as part of an energy system, the influence of external factors significantly changes its basic parameters: its available capacity decreases, while its internal resistance and self-discharge increase, which reduces the lifespan of the storage and disrupts the normal functioning of the energy system as a whole. Improving the performance of the energy storage is an urgent challenge, and one way to address it is to efficiently monitor the storage’s status. The purpose of this study was to increase the efficiency of using electrochemical energy storages by choosing a proper control method according to operating conditions of the storage. The conducted analytical overview of the existing methods of monitoring electrochemical energy storages allowed systematizing and classifying them by the controlled parameters. It is shown that if the storage operates in dynamic modes, such as buffer, starter or main energy source mode, when connecting high-power resistors, it is necessary to take into account such parameters as activation resistance and activation capacitance characterizing storage’s resistance capabilities and presenting valuable information for choosing the method of storage control. The paper demonstrates that in dynamic operation modes it is necessary to use impulse methods of storage control, which allow for efficient monitoring taking into account activation parameters. The authors offer practical recommendations on choosing a method of storage control depending on its operation mode. Pulse multistage potentiostatic and single-pulse galvanostatic control methods meet such requirements the most when the storage is operating in dynamic modes. The preference is given to the single-pulse galvanostatic method developed by the authors, it being relatively simple to implement and sufficiently informative for practical purposes, which facilitates the automation of the control process. Experimental results on controlling the electrochemical energy storage operating in dynamic modes obtained using the method developed by the authors confirm its efficiency.

SCSI is a newly emerging protocol with the goal of implementing the Storage Area Network (SAN) technology over TCP/IP,where enables to access to remote data that in attached storage disks storages - Direct Attached Storage(DAS) over IP-networked. Also it's brings economy and convenience whereas it also raises performance and reliability issues. This paper investigates about possibility , using storage technology of the SANs, and iSCSI-SAN protocol,in local system PC, to improve access to attached storage disks storages in local system, with using iSCSI-SANs as virtual storage, is rather than DAS storage in local system of PC. Explicates after experiment procedure is that improving throughput of iSCSI-SANs was better than attached storage disks storages - DAS in local system . This means is that it can use iSCSI-SANs in local system of PC as attache storage disks storages as DAS , without cost , high performance, and easy control.

The mobile storages especially in mobile devices hold a lot of important and private data. The portability and mobility may lead to loss and theft, therefore security problem of mobile storages and mobile data may suffer from troublesome and damage. TCG provides TPM for trust and security management. It is insufficient with mobile storage devices because mobile storage devices are often separated and load with heterogeneity and massive data. The paper analyzes the security management of mobile storages, proposed practical mobile storage and data security management methods and mechanisms, and illustrates mobile storages integration schemes for single storage device and multiple storages devices and cloud storage. The overall mobile storage and data security policies and methods should be performed urgently.

Most of the horticultural crops are seasonal, having a relatively short harvesting season, and most of them are highly perishable. Hence, proper storage of the horticultural crops using appropriate methods would prolong their availability. The present article gives details about various storage structures classified into two categories, i.e., traditional storage/low-cost storage technologies and improved methods/ modern methods /high-cost storage technologies. Traditional storage structures can be beneficial for farmers needing a small-scale storage system. These systems include in-situ storage, sand and coir, clamps, pits, cellars, ventilated storage, and evaporative cooling. On the other hand, modern methods include refrigerated storages like cold storages, environment-controlled storage (controlled atmospheric storage), modified atmosphere storage, and hypobaric storage. All the storage methods are equally important and can provide high revenue to the farmers and food industries.

Every year the amount of generated data grows exponentially which entails an increase in both the number and capacity of data storage systems. The highest capacity is required for data storage systems that are used to store backups and archives, file storages with shared access, testing and development environments, virtual machine storages, corporate or public web services. To solve such tasks, nowadays manufacturers offer three types of storage systems: block and file storages which have already become a standard used for implementing IT infrastructures, and software-defined storage systems. They allow to create data storages on non-specialized equipment, such as a group of x86-64 server nodes managed by general-purpose operating systems. The main feature of software-defined data storages is the transfer of storage functions from the hardware level to the software level where these storage functions are defined not by physical features of the hardware but by the software selected for specific tasks solving. Today there are three main singled out technologies characterized by scalable architecture that allow to in-crease efficiency and storage volume through adding new nodes to a single pool: Ceph, DELL EMC VxFlex OS, HP StoreVirtual VSA. Software-defined data storages have the following advantages: fault tolerance, efficiency, flexibility and economy. Utilization of software-defined storages allows to increase efficiency of IT infrastructure and reduce its maintenance costs; to build a hybrid infrastructure that would allow to use internal and external cloud resources; to increase efficiency of both services and us-ers by providing reliable connection by using the most convenient devices; to build a portal as a single point of services and resources control.

Energy storages are the most important integral elements of both autonomous energy system based on renewable energy sources and vehicles of various purposes, where they are the main power source. Therefore, the issue of controlling their operation modes is an important one, and choosing the control methods is a relevant problem. The main operation modes of energy storages which require controlling are the work mode when the stored energy is consumed and the charging mode when the used energy is replenished. The example of on-vehicle energy storage is used to analyze basic operation modes and their particular aspects. Dynamic modes with unpredictable energy consumption caused by uncontrollable undercharging and overcharging are typical. The analysis allowed drawing the conclusion that, when controlling operation modes, it is necessary to consider the energy modes of accumulators, which reflect its efficiency most fully and objectively. The analysis of existing control methods showed that their common disadvantage is that they use such parameters as voltage and operating current to control and manage the storage modes. The fact is that due to the transient nature of electrochemical processes during the operation of the storage in dynamic modes, the values of these parameters do not correspond to the current energy state of the storage. This study aims to increase the performance of electrochemical energy storages by efficiently choosing a method for controlling their operation modes. The authors prove and experimentally confirm that when working with electrochemical energy storage devices in dynamic modes, it is necessary to choose the methods based on the application of the active material utilization ratio, information equivalent of which is the value of the area under the depolarization curve on the storage’s response signal to the charging impulse. The use of the proposed mode allows combining the functions of controlling and managing the storage.

With the transition to renewable energies and, above all, strongly fluctuating electricity from wind and solar energy, there will be a need for energy storage in the future. For central grid-scale storages, underground geological storage, similar to those already used for fossil fuels, is in the first place under review. Compressed Air Energy Storages have already been successfully used to provide minutes to hours reserve. For storage capacities in the day to week range, storage is required on a chemical rather than a mechanical basis, through either the conversion of electricity into pure hydrogen (H2) or the generation of mixtures of natural gas and synthetic methane. The latter – the so-called power-to-gas option – allows the use of the existing gas infrastructure. A likely first choice for the storage of H2 or H2-SNG mixtures are man-made salt caverns. The suitability of porous rock storage (depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs or water-bearing reservoirs – aquifers) is still under investigation. Interest in porous rock storage options arises, inter alia, from the fact that many regions of Europe lack suitable salt deposits. Favorable salt deposits exist in the UK, notably in the Cheshire Basin to the west and in eastern England, with six salt cavern-hosted facilities operated as natural gas storages. In any case, underground gas storages are characterized by high safety and low environmental impact.

“Hybrid Cloud Storage” (HCS) is a widely adopted framework that combines the functionality of public and private cloud storage models to provide storage services. This kind of storage is especially ideal for organizations that seek to reduce the cost of their storage infrastructure with the use of “Public Cloud Storage” as a backend to on-premises primary storage. Despite the higher performance, the hybrid cloud has latency issues, related to the distance and bandwidth of the public storage, which may cause a significant drop in the performance of the storage systems during data transfer. This issue can become a major problem when one or more private storage nodes fail. In this paper, we propose a new framework for optimizing the data uploading process that is currently used with hybrid cloud storage systems. The optimization is concerned with spreading the data over the multiple storages in the HCS system according to some predefined objective functions. Furthermore, we also used Network Coding technics for minimizing data transfer latency between the receiver (private storages) and transmitter nodes.

When a user has a mobile device with lots of built-in functions, what would they like to do with it? Of course, interactive voice and videoconferencing, sending SMS & Instant Messaging, listening to music, taking photos, etc. People want to have a device with a large storage capacity, much as they do on a desktop or laptop PC. But sometimes the user does not have sufficient local storage capacity on their mobile device. Online storage is a good solution for this, but the limited battery capacity connectivity must be balanced such require that the mobile decided what should be uploaded/downloaded and when - along with what should be stored locally. This problem is very significant not only theoretically, but also practically. We expect that the online storage will replace storage media, such as CDs and DVDs. Today use of a mobile device is a very popular. Users would like to be able to easily send files to friends in other parts of the work, and share files with these friends. Additionally, users to not want to loose important data (photos, files, ... ), these functions can all be implemented using on-line storage. Use on-line storage should be simpler for the user, thus smart mobile devices should simplify the user’s experience, provide safer file storage (i.e., with a lower risk of data loss), and to store files in the most appropriate location(s).

This thesis introduces a new NAND flash-based storage architecture, NOHOST, for distributed storage systems. A conventional flash-based storage system is composed of a number of high-performance x86 Xeon servers, and each server hosts 10 to 30 solid state drives (SSDs) that use NAND flash memory. This setup not only consumes considerable power due to the nature of Xeon processors, but it also occupies a huge physical space compared to small flash drives. By eliminating costly host servers, the suggested architecture uses NOHOST nodes instead, each of which is a low-power embedded system that forms a cluster of distributed key-value store. This is done by refactoring deep I/O layers in the current design so that refactored layers are light-weight enough to run seamlessly on resource constrained environments. The NOHOST node is a full-fledged storage node, composed of a distributed service frontend, key-value store engine, device driver, hardware flash translation layer, flash controller and NAND flash chips. To prove the concept of this idea, a prototype of two NOHOST nodes has been implemented on Xilinx Zynq ZC706 boards and custom flash boards in this work. NOHOST is expected to use half the power and one-third the physical space as compared to a Xeon-based system. NOHOST is expected to support the through of 2.8 GB/s which is comparable to contemporary storage architectures.

Samples based on the barium fluorobromide (BaFBr) host lattice were prepared in a pure form and doped to 0.5mol% with KF, KBr, SrF2, SrBr2 and with several rare earth chlorides (EuCl2, LaCl3, CeCl3 and SmCl3). Compounds with stoichiometric variations on the pure and europium doped barium fluoroiodide (general formula BaF1I1-x(:Eu2) where x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 or 1) were also synthesised. In addition, the alkali halides NaBr, KBr and RbBr were doped with approximately 0.5mol% of both EuCl2 and InCl. Emission generally occurred at wavelengths between 360nm and 450nm for these materials. None of them had room temperature emission bands that were as intense and narrow as that of BaFBr:Eu2+, because they do not have electronic transitions that are so closely matched to the electron/hole recombination energy as the 4f6 5d1 → 4f7 transition in Eu2+. TL glow curves showed a broad high temperature peak which arose as a result of charged defect migration and a variety of lower temperature peaks that were due to recombination from defect states within the band gap. The F(F') centre was matched to the glow curve peak t 400K and the F(Br-) centre to the lower temperature peak at 370K in a variety of mixed stoichiometry BaFBr-type compounds. It was also observed that a small amount of oxygen within the lattice appeared to enhance the intensity of a couple of the low temperature glove curve peaks, but too much oxygen had the opposite effect and these peaks were quenched. The time dependence of the intensity of PSL at timescales of the order of 100 - 6000 seconds was found to obey a power law decay from 100K to 300K. This could be modelled using random walk kinetics for the migration of the charged defect species. Upon irradiation and photostimulation at low temperatures an increase in the initial intensity of the luminescence and of the magnitude of the gradient of the linear plot was observed. This suggested that more change was stored at low temperatures and that new photostimulable centres were able to form more easily.

Resumo:
Resource Description Framework (RDF) is a flexible, increasingly popular data model that allows for simple representation of arbitrarily structured information. This flexibility allows it to act as an effective underlying data model for the growing Semantic Web. Unfortunately, it remains a challenge to store and query RDF data in a performant manner, with existing stores struggling to meet the needs of demanding applications: particularly low latency, human-interactive systems. This is a result of fundamental properties of RDF data: RDF's small statement size tends to engender large joins with a lot of random I/O, and its limited structure impedes the generation of compact, relevant statistics for query optimisation. This thesis posits that the problem of performant RDF storage can be effectively mitigated using in-memory storage, thanks to RAM's extremely high throughput and rapid random I/O relative to disk. RAM is rapidly reducing in cost, and is finally reaching the stage where it is becoming a practical medium for the storage of substantial databases, particularly given the relatively small size at which RDF datasets become challenging for disk-backed systems. In-memory storage brings with it its own challenges. The relatively high cost of RAM necessitates a very compact representation, and the changing relationship between memory and CPU (particularly increasing RAM access latency) benefits designs that are aware of that relationship. This thesis presents an investigation into creating CPU-friendly data structures, along with a deep study of the common characteristics of popular RDF datasets. Together, these are used to inform the creation of a new data structure called the Adaptive Hierarchical RDF Index (AHRI), an in-memory, RDF-specific structure that outperforms traditional storage mechanisms in nearly every respect. AHRI is validated with a comprehensive evaluation against other commonly used in-memory data structures, along with a real world test against a memory-backed store, and a fast disk-based store allowed to cache its data in RAM. The results show that AHRI outperforms these systems with regards to both space consumption and read/write behaviour. The document subsequently describes future work that should provide substantial further improvements, making the use of RAM for RDF storage even more compelling.

Today, major IT-companies, such as Microsoft, Amazon and Google, are offering online storage services to their customers. This is a favourable solution -- as opposed to regular storage -- in terms of low costs, reliability, scalability and capacity. However, important security features such as data privacy and integrity are often absent. To address these issues, a cryptographic architecture is proposed that ensures the confidentiality and integrity of the data stored by users, independent of the trust of the provider. This includes secure sharing of private data among users of the same service. The underlying cryptographic architecture is based on existing open source systems and cryptographic primitives. The architecture was implemented as a reusable general library in Java. An Android client was created, and several performance tests were conducted. The proof of concept system shows that it is possible to implement the proposed scheme, and that the cryptographic operations does not significantly affect the user experience on an Android device. Possible weaknesses of the scheme are identified. We present a scheme for secure storage and sharing of files on an untrusted server, and argue for its validity. To support streaming functionality, the scheme could be extended with hash trees to validate small parts of a file at the time.

Resumo:
This study was mandated by Gaznat and is an associated case study to the SWEET project "Sustainable and Resilient Energy for Switzerland" (SURE). It analyses the role of large-scale gas storage in the Swiss energy system taking into consideration the Swiss energy strategy and climate goals as well as the security of supply objectives within a quantitative model-based scenario framework. Related to largescale gas storages, the study particularly focuses on potentially new gas storage options for Switzerland, such as Lined Rock Cavern – LRC storages and Liquefied Natural Gas – LNG storages. In order to quantify long-term developments of the energy system of Switzerland and the role of gas storages specifically, the well-established Swiss TIMES Energy systems Model has been employed and complemented with a dedicated dynamic gas flow model of the Swiss gas grid using the FlexECO modelling framework.
