In the course of the 1950s, Italian industrial design underwent a period of professionalisation and rose to international fame under the banners of ‘Made in Italy’ and ‘la linea italiana’. Seen in retrospect, Italian design retained this position during the 1960s, with the onset of avant-garde ‘pop-design’ and ‘anti-design’. Yet this future development was by no means a given in the Italian design community at the turn of the decade. At this crucial moment, between the rationality of the first postwar period and the playfulness of the second, allegations of a ‘crisis’ in Italian industrial design raised a storm in the professional community for a brief period around 1960. This article analyses this heated debate, focusing on its most pronounced manifestation: the discussions in the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (ADI) and the design magazine Stile Industria following the jury's decision to withhold the Gran Premio Nazionale Compasso d'Oro for 1959.

Abstract: The concept of conventional industry, which is still managed traditionally, is that waste treatment is still managed individually and stops until the waste is disposed of in landfills. The location of the industrial area has also not been utilized properly so that it can increase income from the industry it produces. The eco-green industrial park concept, which has been widely implemented and developed in Europe, America, and Asia, offers a concept to improve industrial economic performance in an industrial area while minimizing the negative impact on the environment where the industry is located. The development of conventional industries into green industries is expected to reduce the potential for environmental damage and pollution arising from these industrial activities and can be minimized in proportion to the economic benefits obtained by the industry. The application of industrial concepts can be viewed from various aspects, namely the extent to which industrial activities can be integrated with natural systems, energy systems used, material flow and waste management in all industrial areas, water use, the effectiveness of industrial green management, material use, and building technology, as well as the extent of integration with the surrounding community.

Rencana kawasan industri dikarenakan faktor keberadaan Jembatan Suramadu. Industrial estates are designed due to the existence of the Suramadu Bridge. Acceleration of regional growth is based on aspects of market demand and industrial estates as well as land availability factors (the availability of sufficient vacant land is in accordance with technical requirements, environmental requirements and economic requirements). The government and developers immediately complement this location with infrastructure and superstructure supporting industrial zones. Conduct intensive promotional efforts to attract potential investors to invest / invest in industrial estates. Prepare a system and means of service to prospective investors in a professional, easy and simple way in a one-stop service system, a fast tax service process. There are still not many activities in a number of industries that operate, so the influence on land transformation is still low. Likewise, industrial activity still has little influence on the transformation of the workforce, because labor migrants from agriculture are not only caused by industrial activities.

Abstract Many believe that the industrial estate could encourage the industrial sector in developing countries due to its better infrastructure, access to supporting industries, and the market as well as technology and information spillover. These factors could lead to a higher productivity level and export activities of manufacturing firms inside the industrial estate. Some previous studies still provide a mixed result regarding the relationship between these three variables. Thus, this paper contributes to the related study by examining the relationship between an industrial estate and both productivity level and export activity in the case of Indonesian Manufacturing Firms. The paper introduces the practice of entropy balancing, one of matching methods along with firm-level data as a unit of analysis. A significant difference in the number of observations between firms inside and outside the industrial estate motivates the usage of matching methods technique, so the data become balanced. The treatment is when the firms being in the industrial estate. There are two outcomes variables, which are productivity level and export activity. The result found that being industrial estate improves firms’ productivity, yet it fails to promote export activity. JEL Classification: L23, L52, L60

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study was prompted by two significant aspects within the South African training field. Firstly, the attitude of the South African Government towards training in terms of legislation made it evident that trainers will progressively playa more important role in organisations. Secondly, although literature regard the trainer as one of the important role-players in the training situation, no substantial research has been done on training style as an aspect that can influence the trainer's performance and ultimately the effectiveness of training. In order to address this void, the research was dedicated to determine whether a systematic relationship exists between the personality of a __trainer and his/her training style. The following topics were examined by means of a selective study of the literature: adult learners as the target _ of training programmes; pedagogy and andragogy as orientations to training; the trainer; the definition of training style; the trait theory of personality as the basis of the study; and empirical studies done on the topic prior to this study. In order to gather the necessary information, three questionnaires were administered to a sample of 96 trainers. The 16-PF, which is an established questionnaire, was used to collect data about the personality traits of the respondents. Furthermore, a questionnaire namely the Training Style Inventory was developed to measure the training style of trainers. Trainers were then accordingly grouped in one of five types of training styles. The last questionnaire gathered information regarding demographic aspects of the sample. The study found limited support for the hypothesis that there exists a systematic relationship between personality and training style. However, it was found that certain dimensions of personality do playa role in the manifestation of a certain training style.

The 21st century has awakened a call for new leaders to cope with the demands of the rapidly changing world of work which emphasises flatter structures, and a more democratic style of leadership. When looking at the changing competencies of the new leader, it is postulate that leadership takes into consideration the emotional attributes as well as the rational aspects of the individual. From this it becomes evident that the leaders of the 21st century would have to be emotionally intelligent to motivate employees to achieve organizational goals. The aim of this study was to investigate if there is a relationship between emotional intelligence and leadership styles in middle to senior managers.

Leadership Development Programs (LDPs) programs are employed by firms globally in different multiple manners that are aimed at accelerating the development and growth of highly capable candidates. Among these candidates, depending on the particular LDP, may be those possess engineering skills typically afforded through engineering education as measured by completion of an engineering degree. Infrastructure reductions might be afforded corporations if multiple LDPs could be supplanted with one program such as an Engineering Leadership Development Program. In practice, however, economic constraints limited the total sample population of this category to 67 (48 with engineering degrees and 15 without). Employing SPSS Sample Power 3, based on the pilot testing for CPMs, 113 subjects per group (with and without engineering degrees - totaling 226) would be required to yield a power of 80%, and of the 350 received completed surveys received, CPMs meeting the desired criteria accounted for only 63 (18%) of the total number of rated organizational leaders. Consequently, while all testing included the CPM group, the scope was expanded to also include managers with and without PMI certifications as well as managers with and without engineering degrees. The first research hypothesis was Ho: There is no affiliation amongst Transformational Leadership (TL) and engineering education. Thus, the author’s aim is to determine the role, if any, that engineering education plays in perceived leadership style as exhibited by CPMs and non-CPMs holding engineering degrees (e.g. EE, ME, IE, etc.) versus the same without engineering degrees. A secondary goal is to determine, within the management category, which style (transformational or transactional) serves as the dominant style of leadership. With this in mind, the independent variable, CPMs with and without engineering degrees, was operationally defined consistent with this Project.

Lateral thinking has become an important topic in business and one of the apparent solutions to the dilemma of acquiring more creativity in the organisation has been to train employees in lateral thinking. This study had three objectives. To determine whether delegates attending lateral thinking training acquired more lateral thinking skills and knowledge than those without this training. To determine whether lateral thinking training impacted on style of thinking and to determine whether preferred styles of thinking facilitated the acquisition of lateral thinking skills. An experimental group was trained in lateral thinking. Subjects were tested on their lateral thinking skills before and after training. Subjects were also tested to assess their cognitive style before training and six months thereafter. A control group was tested in a similar fashion.

The purpose of my studies was to get a deeper understanding of small companies’ organization logic and to find out if they had adopted new management concepts such as Just-In-Time, Total Quality Management, Time Based Management, Business Process Reengineering, Lean Production and concepts of Learning Organization, or if they were influenced by these concepts in their way to organize production and labor. More specific research questions were: What are the opportunities and obstacles for implementation of new management concepts in small industrial organizations? What management strategies are used in small companies? How do small companies deal with learning and training? How does flexibility manifest itself in small companies? How do small companies relate themselves to the environment and are they cooperating with other companies? The results are presented in seven papers. The research method is based on Yin’s case study research, and was conducted in four case studies of small industrial organizations with fewer than 50 employees. The companies are located in the county of Norrbotten and the area of Gnosjö in Sweden, and in the state of Minnesota in the United States. The first two studies can be regarded as pilot studies and the result is presented in paper 1 and 2. The third study is the main study, and was conducted in 25 small metal job shops, 12 in Sweden and 13 in the United States (papers 3-5). In the fourth study I explore the contextual conditions for interorganizational networks (paper 6). The seventh paper discusses interaction and communication in network cooperation based on experiences from previous studies of interorganizational network and from the main study. Some important results from the pilot studies show that companies stay competitive at the market, increase the productivity and even grow although they have a traditional structure and management, and actually do nothing to change (papers 1 and 2). Important results from the main study show that the managers in these companies do not use conventional management tools in the management process. Operative and strategic management is overlapping each other or totally integrated. Strategies have emerged rather than been formulated after analyzing internal and external conditions. The strategic management process is based on intuition, feelings and experiences (paper 3). Analyzing knowledge management in these companies shows that neither the codification nor the personalization strategy is, or even can be, fully practiced in these companies. Every job is different and explores new problems in job-shops giving service to larger companies, which implicate that there is little use of codifying solutions or setting up check lists for trouble-shooting. Even if some learning is carried out in the daily work, there are obstacles to fully practice a personalization strategy because that demands extensive cultural, structural and organizational changes (paper 4). The companies in the main study are relatively inflexible or even rigid. External flexibility demands internal stability, and the most flexible way to adapt to market demand is to be very stable and to keep that stability. Flexibility in larger corporations depends on stability in the small subcontracting companies (paper 5). Cooperation with other companies in the local society or in the region is dependent on how the social capital was created in a historical perspective. The shared system of values can include positive or negative attitudes towards private business initiatives, which in turn affects entrepreneurship and local industrial development, as well as, interorganizational networking. An exogenous attitude toward local industrial development also promotes an exogenous attitude toward interorganizational cooperation. A more exogenous attitude will more likely includes a more open attitude to organizations and persons outside the local society and towards cooperation that is not based on personal ties. This means that industrial districts like Gnosjö will not necessarily cope better with environmental uncertainty (paper 6). A network organization run by a professional manager, where the members are no longer involved in planning and realization of activities normally becomes institutionalized. The members do not experience the network as network cooperation but as a service organization giving its members exclusive service in specific issues (paper 7). The small companies studied have not implemented any of the analyzed concepts and are not extensively influenced by the concepts while organizing their production. On the other hand, by analyzing new management concepts, it is obvious that they are all heavily influenced by Japanese management philosophies and that their inventors are influenced by their predecessors, who in turn were all deeply influenced by Taylor and his Theories of Scientific Management. If Taylor did not find “the best way” to organize industrial organizations, why should these new management concepts constitute that way? One of the first questions starting this research process still remains: Are there actually any “new” management concepts or are they only a new wrapping of Taylor’s old management ideas? Is the “new” management and organizational logic that we for years have tried to implement in all kinds of organizations, nothing more than a logical response to the present human, technological and environmental conditions? What makes then small manufacturing companies survive and even grow without adopting new management and production concepts? Maybe they are just trying to intuitively and logically respond to environmental conditions in a manner known for a hundred years? There is still much left before we are able to fully understand the organizational logic of small companies. Meanwhile, we are still scientifically occupied searching for the best way…

Our group is composed of women who are interested in creating and developing a business in the Clothing Line Industry, this is how the “My Style” brand is created. For this business venture we have created and analysis, considering all aspects of the environment. We have established strategies that we will use to reach our goal. We have developed various plans such as marketing, operations, human resources and financial to establish a viable way to our business proposal. The business proposal for “My Style” consists in designing and making a style of “clothing” that is tailored specific to the client, with fabric of high quality, accessories and designs chosen by the client. This is done so that the finished product is different from everything else and that it “satisfies” the clientele. We have chosen a sector that targets customers which typically approach a mall, boutique, or other places and always finds clothes that is either too big or too tight, it’s never perfect fit or in the style that they prefer. It is here where we will put our focus on and set our targets so that we put an end to this trend. Abstract The fourth industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0 is a new paradigm that is significantly influencing several manufacturing industries across the globe. Industry 4.0 synchronizes concepts such as Smart Manufacturing, Smart Factory, and the Internet of Things with existing factory automation technologies in order to improve value in manufacturing by monitoring key performance indicators and creates value in all manufacturing related aspects. Currently, several industries have started early initiatives of implementing these technologies. As the industries are evaluating their readiness for implementing the Industry 4.0 concepts, there are several challenges which need to be addressed including high initial investment, lack of standardization, data security and lack of skilled labor. A strategic roadmap towards implementing the Industry 4.0 paradigms is still unclear in the industry as well as in academia. This research develops an initial framework for the effective implementation of Industry 4.0 in the high technology manufacturing sectors in the Southern California region. The results of this study are expected to provide a platform to expand the opportunities of Industry 4.0 further and facilitate worldwide adoption.

Internet technology provides a convenient and low-cost platform for the cooperation among two or more manufacturers. Industrial alliance is a networked cooperative enterprise group linked by the similar product and technology relying on such an Internet platform coupled with supporting cooperation system. However, with increasing bulkiness and complexity of the cooperation system, it is a significant issue in industrial alliance to simplify the cooperation style among these manufacturers. The hierarchical industrial alliance is always classified into alliance level, enterprises level and departments level. Based on the self-similarity principle of fractal, the paper analyzes the similarity concerning both function structure and workflow of the industrial alliance. To describe these self-similar organizations at different levels while developing information system, fractal-agent theory is raised here. Moreover, based on the fractal-agent theory, a new cooperation style of industrial alliance is put forward, by which a cooperation pool of fractal-agents and the multi-level nested dynamic sub-alliance can be established to simplify their cooperation activities. It’s practically proved that the technology can efficiently enable the industrial alliance to fulfill rapid reconfiguration.

Through the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), a smart factory has entered the boom period expecting significant investments. In this new environment, Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication has shown immediate potential in IIoT applications. However, most M2M communication implementations use the centralized model in which it requires a reliable intermediary for transactions between machines. Using smart contracts in M2M communication would allow a decentralized network to be used without the need for a trusted intermediary. In order to provide security, privacy, and decentralization in M2M communication and IIoT processes, a middleware based on a smart contract is proposed. Such a proposal is analyzed at the industrial level and evaluated for impacts against the stringent communication requirements that industrial applications require. Experimental results show that the application of smart contracts offers greater security and privacy than traditional proposals, but time requirements of real-time systems must still be optimized for smart contracts to be applied at the industrial field.

Application of lean manufacturing (LM) principles within the manufacturing industry extends back several decades to drive efficiency and reduce waste across complex production lines. The advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, known as “Industry 4.0” technology is transforming the LM processes to promote the manufacturing industry. Additive Manufacturing (AM) has been identified as a technology with great potential to create a longstanding impact on the manufacturing world and is a core component of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Many successful industries have achieved outstanding performance by integrating LM principles at the core of their corporate transformation. Of recent, AM and 3D printing has been identified as a technology that is revolutionizing LM principles in the following ways: easier prototyping, easily customize products, shorter lead times, local on-demand manufacturing, and lower cost production. Despite the exceptional success of LM principles across different industries and sectors, still many companies LM journeys fail due to many obvious reasons. The emergence of Industry 4.0 digital technologies has created an enabling environment for different manufacturing industries currently using LM principles to identify the need to embrace or add digital technologies to their lean manufacturing transformation journey. The intersections between LM and digital technologies are termed as “Digital Lean” or “Lean 4.0”. There are limited studies and literature gaps on lean manufacturing within the context of AM industry. More so, there is no study that examines the application of digital lean manufacturing in an AM industry. The paper presents a review of the concept of lean manufacturing principles and how it is revolutionizing the AM industry. This paper investigates the concept of digital lean manufacturing and its future potential impact in the AM industry. Finally, this paper develops a digital lean manufacturing system or tools considered suitable for the AM industry.

Abstract Within many quality-critical industries, e.g. the aerospace industry, industrial X-ray inspection is an essential as well as a resource intense part of quality control. Within such industries the X-ray image interpretation is typically still done by humans, therefore, increasing the interpretation automatization would be of great value. We claim, that safe automatic interpretation of industrial X-ray images, requires a robust confidence estimation with respect to out-of-distribution (OOD) data. In this work we have explored if such a confidence estimation can be achieved by comparing input images with a model of the accepted images. For the image model we derived an autoencoder which we trained unsupervised on a public dataset with X-ray images of metal fusion-welds. We achieved a true positive rate at 80–90% at a 4% false positive rate, as well as correctly detected an OOD data example as an anomaly.

This paper surveys and analyzes industrial policies in Colombia, finding extensive use of productive development policies (PDPs) and despite claims of only moderate government intervention. Rarely explicitly associated with the need to address market failures, PDPs are instead associated with economic reactivation and vaguely defined competitiveness. There are also PDPs that address government failures considered unlikely to be corrected by first-best interventions. Colombia has made progress, however, in structuring an institutional setting for PDP design that is sufficiently linked with private sector groups to elicit information on constraints and opportunities that require government intervention. Nonetheless, the overall set of PDPs in place still lacks coherence and is not always guided by the policy requests of the private sector more widely defined.

Olsson, Olle. Industrial decarbonization done right: identifying success factors for well-functioning permitting processes. Stockholm Environment Institute, novembro de 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.51414/sei2021.034.

Resumo:
1 Introduction 1.1 The urgency of industrial decarbonization The last few years have seen several of the world’s largest carbon dioxide-emitting countries and leading heavy industry companies committing to mid-century net-zero targets (Buckley 2021; Denyer and Kashiwagi 2020; McCurry 2020; Myers 2020). Consequently, the discussion on economy-wide transition to net-zero is accelerating, with focus shifting from “if” to “when” and “how”, even for heavy industry sectors like steel, cement and chemicals. This makes it increasingly urgent to analyse not just whether it is technologically feasible to decarbonize heavy industry, but also investigate issues more directly related to practical implementation. This includes site-specific planning, infrastructure availability, and consultation with local authorities and other stakeholders. Many of the latter considerations are formalized as part of the permitting processes that are an essential vehicle to ensure that industrial interests are balanced against interests of society at large. However, doing this balancing act can turn out to be very complicated and associated with uncertainties as to their outcome, as well as being demanding in resources and time. At the same time, to ensure broad buy-in and support from society, the investments needed must be implemented in a way that takes a broad spectrum of sustainability concerns into account, not just climate change mitigation. A key question is if and how permitting processes can run more smoothly and efficiently while still ensuring inclusive consultations, fair procedures and adherence to legal certainty. This policy brief discusses this question from the starting point of Swedish conditions, but many of the points raised will be relevant for a broader international discussion on taking industrial decarbonization to implementation. 1.2 Industrial transition and permitting processes in Sweden Decarbonization of the industrial sector in Sweden essentially entails a relatively small number of investment projects in the cement, steel, petrochemical and refinery sectors, where the vast majority of carbon emissions are concentrated (Karltorp et al. 2019; Nykvist et al. 2020). However, while few in number, the size of these investments means that their implementation will by necessity become relevant to many other parts of society. In connection with the increasing focus on how to implement industrial decarbonization in Sweden, discussions about permitting processes have been brought higher up on the agenda. While there has been an active discussion on permitting processes in Sweden for quite some time, it has primarily been focused on aspects related to mining and wind power (Larsen et al. 2017; Raitio et al. 2020). The last few years have, however, focused increasingly on industrial projects, in particular related to a proposed – though eventually cancelled – expansion of an oil refinery in the southwestern part of the country (Blad 2020). In terms of political discussions, both the governmental initiative Fossil-free Sweden (2020) and the Swedish Climate Policy Council (2020) emphasize that permitting processes need to become faster in order for Sweden’s industrial transition to be implemented in line with the time plan set by the 2017 Swedish Climate Act. Business representatives and organizations are also voicing concerns about the slow speed of permitting (Balanskommissionen 2019; Jacke 2018). At the same time, criticism has been raised that much of the environmental damage done in Sweden comes from activities conducted within limits set by environmental permits, which could be a flaw in the system (Malmaeus and Lindblom 2019). Finally, recent public inquiries have also discussed permitting processes.

While hydrogen is emerging as a clean alternative automotive fuel and energy storage medium, there are still numerous challenges to implementation, such as the economy of hydrogen production and deployment, expensive storage materials, energy intensive compression or liquefaction processes, and limited trial applications. Synthetic ammonia production, on the other hand, has been available on an industrial scale for nearly a century. Ammonia is one of the most-traded commodities globally and the second most-produced synthetic chemical after sulfuric acid. As an energy carrier, it enables effective hydrogen storage in chemical form by binding hydrogen atoms to atmospheric nitrogen. While ammonia as a fuel is still in its infancy, its unique properties render it as a potentially viable candidate for decarbonizing the automotive industry. Yet, lack of regulation and standards for automotive applications, technology readiness, and reliance on natural gas for both hydrogen feedstocks to generate the ammonia and facilitate hydrogen and nitrogen conversion into liquid ammonia add extra uncertainty to use scenarios. Unsettled Issues Concerning the Use of Green Ammonia Fuel in Ground Vehicles brings together collected knowledge on current and future prospects for the application of ammonia in ground vehicles, including the technological and regulatory challenges for this new type of clean fuel.

The aerospace manufacturing industry is, in many ways, one of the most sophisticated commercial manufacturing systems in existence. It uses cutting-edge materials to build highly complex, safety-critical structures and parts. However, it still relies largely upon human skill and dexterity during assembly. There are increasing efforts to introduce automation, but uptake is still relatively low. Why is this and what needs to be done? Some may point to part size or the need for accuracy. However, as with any complex issue, the problems are multifactorial. There are no right or wrong answers to the automation conundrum and indeed there are many contradictions and unsettled aspects still to be resolved. Unsettled Issues on the Viability and Cost-Effectiveness of Automation in Aerospace Manufacturing builds a comprehensive picture of industry views and attitudes backed by technical analysis to answer some of the most pressing questions facing robotic aerospace manufacturing.

Localization and local content mandates are an increasing presence in the global investment landscape, and the development of local content policy in Saudi Arabia will be an important factor in the lasting legacy of Vision 2030. While virtually all industries are targeted by local content mandates in Saudi Arabia, a sector tipped for strict targets and maximum local value added is renewable energy production. This is no surprise, as the abundant natural resources of sun and wind make the Kingdom well placed to be globally competitive in the sector, and as the industry is still in its infancy, an opportunity exists to localize from the ground up. This paper looks at the employment possibilities across the value chain of solar PV and onshore wind and, applying the unique characteristics of the Saudi labor force, investigates where localization mandates should target in order to optimize the benefits to the Saudi economy.

In recent years, there has been renewed interest in the use of industrial polices. The need for modern industrial policies has been increasingly acknowledged in the literature and by the praxis of developed and developing countries, including much of Latin America. Whether a country should have an industrial policy is no longer in question; rather, the issue is how to do it right. Nevertheless, research is still incipient on the experience with the specific institutional arrangements and governance structure required for effective modern industrial policy and the form that such institutions should take. This is especially true in large countries with developed subnational governance structures. One institutional mechanism considered vital to effective modern industrial policy is the modality of public-private dialogue and problem solving that supports a search for obstacles and solutions to agreed development objectives. This paper addresses industrial policy in general, but especially at the subnational level, with new empirical evidence from a large federal state: Mexico. It presents a detailed analysis of the governance of 32 newly created public-private State Productivity Commissions (Comisiones Estatales de Productividad, or CEPs). The analysis also is informed by new research on the longer experience of subnational public-private councils in Colombia's national system of competitiveness and innovation.

largest world producer of automotive vehicles. The Mexican experience is part of the more general case of the “integrated peripheries.” The development of these cannot be accounted for separately from the developments occurring in its core country. Unlike the core-periphery literature, however, our analysis emphasizes that the various clusters of cores and integrated peripheries are not alike. In the case under study, the core has been systematically lagging behind the main transformations pioneered by its competitors. The paper traces the evolution of the Mexican automotive industry, emphasizing the difficulties faced by a late-comer country in developing an independent industry, and the importance of policy choices as well as the macroeconomic context in affecting its development. NAFTA represents the culmination of an integration process that has profoundly transformed the structure of the Mexican automotive industry, deepening its dependence on the US market. While there is no doubt that it has contributed to the spectacular growth of the Mexican auto industry, whether it also increased its resilience or, rather, its dependence is still an open question. This issue is particularly relevant in view of the transformations that are taking place in the automotive sector and in the geopolitical scenario. These include the end of NAFTA and the advent of USMCA, the entry of powerful competitors into the global market, and the transition to electric and autonomous vehicles, which all entail risks and opportunities. The lens of the centre-periphery relationship can help to understand the present integration of North America and its future direction.
