Why do small states contribute to great power led wars even though they lack the capabilities to determine the success of the war and there are no clear interests to gain? The peaceable states of the Nordic countries could have opted for a free-riding strategy instead of being active participants. Still, the Nordic countries were in relation to their size, some of the top military contributors in Afghanistan. In recent small state literature, it has been suggested that small states use military contributions as means to increase their international status position. There are however two competing and sometimes overlapping arguments of whether status is a means for increasing political influence or securing protection. This thesis contributes to this literature by differentiating the concept of status in two categories - influence and security. This distinction enabled a cross case comparative congruence test which reveals that the Nordic states had different status motivations in their decision to contribute to the Afghanistan war. Denmark and Sweden had a clear preference of seeking status seeking as means for influence while Norway used status mainly as means for enhancing security. This thesis shows that small states are not only dependent security consumers. It suggests that the decision-making processes in the small states were guided by independent preferences of enhancing status, which ultimately transformed into military contributions. However, rather than considering status as the main objective, the potential gains of enhancing the status position were the central ambition. The Nordic states’ preferences of status gains differed more than what previous research has suggested.

Purpose: The aim of the thesis is to identify principles of valuation and to reach a solution for how Statens järnvägar can present their leased railroad vehicles in the future.

Methodology: The authors have done a case study through a qualitative approach. Interviews have been done with Statens järnvägar, Näringsdepartementet and Riksrevisionen. Annual reports from Banverket and Luftfartsverket have been studied.

Theoretical perspectives: The regulations that rule the authorities are a base for the study.

Earlier researches done within the subject are presented in this section.

Empirical foundation: The empirical foundation of this study consists of primary- and secondary data. The primary data is collected from the interviews that have been done, whilst the secondary data is composed of annual reports, regulations and various other documents.

Conclusions: The authors have come to the conclusion that the method of valuation that Statens järnvägar choose, depends a lot on the vehicles hypothetical future. It is difficult to say that only one of the methods would be the correct one.

The standard view in political philosophy is that nation-states have the right to exclude unwanted would-be immigrants. This view is grounded in the value of membership in a political association expressing the will of a people with a shared national or political identity; that is, citizenship. Because citizens see themselves as co-members of a just political society, they have a morally justified collective authority to exclude non-members. This is puzzling though. Individual freedom is normatively the orienting moral value in liberal political reasoning, and political philosophers are ordinarily suspicious of claims that some agents can do things to other agents that interferes with their liberty. Given that exclusion entails doing things to people and interfering with their liberty, the right to exclude warrants close philosophical scrutiny. In this dissertation I ask who has the right to exclude whom from what, why and how? I begin by separating how states exclude into three categories – omission, denial, and force – and argue that none of these methods are compatible with core liberal values. Next I show that self-determination does not provide a justification for why states can exclude, because states can be self-determining even if they do not have the right to exclude. I then turn to what people are excluded from and argue that if we take human rights seriously, then there is a plausible human right to immigrate that states are obliged to observe. To address whom states may exclude, I defend a cosmopolitan account of universal moral equality against narrower conceptions of national and political memberships. Ultimately, according to my argument, because exclusion relies on liberal states acting in ways incompatible with their normative foundations; is not required to realise self-determination; conflicts with the state’s human rights duties; and violates the presumed moral equality of all human beings; there are no states with a normative right to exclude.

The purpose of the present study was to begin development of a psychological profile for environmentally ill patients. Existing psychiatric labels are unable to encompass these patients. Test scores were drawn from a pool of 89 patients whose environmental exposures were verified by the presence of toxins in the blood serum. A Mental Status Exam, a Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised screen, and the Profile of Mood States were administered. Results indicate a primary pattern which is significantly different from test norms consisting of fatigue, reduced mental functioning, and a lack of psychotic or personality disorder indicators. The reported symptoms of environmentally ill patients were objectively verified by current psychological test instruments. The need for a new diagnostic category for people who have been poisoned by environmental toxins is discussed.

Results of a national survey on sound field usage and sound field calibration are presented. The purposes of this study are: (1) to describe and analyze sound field stimuli, sound field test conditions, and sound field calibration procedures currently employed by audiologists nationwide, and (2) to investigate the extent of agreement between current practice and suggested practice from the current literature. Respondents to the survey were 418 ASHA certified audiologists, who answered questions on demographic variables, sound field testing conditions, and sound field calibration procedures. Eighty-one percent of the respondents use sound field audiometry as part of their audiological practice. Demographic characteristics of the respondents indicate that they were representative of the population of ASHA certified audiologists. Most respondents use two loudspeakers for sound field testing and use warbled pure tones for the stimuli. Forty-two different models of audiometers are in use, although three models account for over one-half of the responses. Electroacoustic calibration of the sound field stimuli is done most often by an equipment technician, and only a small percentage of the respondents knew how the calibration was done. No pattern of significant interactions was found among the calibration methods, sound field test conditions, and demographic variables of the subjects. Results show a lack of standardization among sound field test rooms, great diversity in the stimuli used for sound field testing, and inconsistent calibration methods. Results therefore indicate the need for national standards and improved pre-service and in-service training in sound field testing and sound field calibration techniques. Recommendations for clinical practice in sound field testing and sound field calibration are proposed.

This doctoral project combines a performance-led practice with contextual research in order to demonstrate how arts practice can challenge historical perceptions of clay and enhance its material status. The core knowledge deduced from this research is that embodied performance transforms connectivity between artist and clay and produces a unified incarnation of both elements. Through the use of immersive research methods I gained insights which could not have been predicted - particularly that my experiential performances were a process of ‘clay becoming’ in which I ultimately became the clay. In terms of locality, the practice, comprising eight performance-led works and related documentation, focuses on the China Clay and Ball Clay of South West England. Traditionally in the arts, these materials are associated with ceramics, where through heating, clay becomes rigid and fixed. In contrast, my research investigates the textural fluidity and metamorphic potential of these clays in their raw state. The practice encompasses two interrelated groups of work; the In-breath and Out-breath. These terms are significant in three respects. Firstly they define two different modes and moments of practice. Secondly they refer to myself as a living component of these practices. Thirdly they reflect the cultural associations of clay as a metaphor for life. During the initial exploratory ‘In-breath’ phase of my practice, comprising four site-specific pieces, I engaged with clay at sites of historical relevance, building an expansive knowledge of my material. During the later ‘Out-breath’ phase, identification with site was relinquished. These works took place within neutral spaces, allowing the clay to be explored in relation to my body. The introduction of layering, where photographic elements of private clay rituals were situated within the context of a live performance, allowed a texturally dynamic and immersive experience to be created for both artist and viewer. By collecting and preserving clay traces from these live performances (e.g. foot and body prints) additional value was given to the embedded significance of the clay.

Over the past 30 years there has been an increase in socioeconomic inequities between Black and White persons in the United States. Some research suggests that political ideology, which in turn impacts political competition levels, may at least partially explain these disparities, though the body of academic literature in this area is sparse. Little is known about how Black political ideology is formed by perceptions of inequality. The purpose of this study was to examine the phenomenon of Black political ideology, political competition, and socioeconomic status to determine how political competition relates to social inequities between Blacks and Whites. The theoretical framework of the study was Lockean social contract theory. The overarching question guiding this study explored how competition could better defend natural rights to reduce social disparities and the obligations of government to equally protect, similarly to the protections of government historically extended to Whites. Multiple and multivariate regression models were developed using data from the 2010 General Social Survey, the 2010 American Community Survey, and the presidential election results of 2008. Results showed no significant relationship between Black beliefs of inequality with Black political ideology and that high political competition rates might contribute to the increasing Black/White socioeconomic gaps. Contrary to economic competition models developed through Locke's social contract, there was no evidence that political competition reduces socioeconomic inequities between Blacks and Whites. The implications for positive social change include education of policy makers that higher political competition rates in their states contribute to lower socioeconomic outcomes for Blacks.

This research examines the status of the United States (U.S.) Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program within the context of the current ever-changing domestic and global security environment. Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis was used to analyze: the information gathered from the literature review; the importance of various players (domestic and international competitors, interests groups, decision-makers); and the general environment (global security and the economic environment that shape the National Security Strategy (NSS)). The study concludes that the U.S FMS program has evolved slowly because of the nature of the arms export business and the constraints imposed by the National Security Strategy. Recommendations for improving the FMS program are provided.

Synthetic antiferromagnets (SAFs) consist of two thin ferromagnetic particles separated by a thin nonmagnetic spacer. The magnetic moments of the two particles couple antiparallel via dipolar interactions, with the interlayer exchange interaction suppressed by a suitable choice of the spacer material. The SAF system studied in this thesis contains thin elliptical-in-the-plane permalloy particles magnetized uniformly and mutually antiparallel in the ground state. A SAF can also exhibit long-lived metastable nonuniform magnetization states, such as spin-vortex pairs. The thesis explores hysteresis and spin dynamics in: (i) uniformly magnetized SAFs and (ii) SAFs in the vortex-pair state. The uniformly magnetized antiparallel ground state of a symmetrical SAF, having identical ferromagnetic particles, is double  degenerate. The resonance modes are in-phase (acoustical) and out-of-phase (optical) oscillations of the magnetic moments. Asymmetry between the two magnetic layers is shown to lift the degeneracy of the antiparallel ground state, which in the static regime results in unequal stability of the two states. In the dynamic regime, the asymmetries are shown to result in a splitting of the resonance frequency of the new non-degenerate ground states. The resulting resonant-mode splitting can be used to selectively switch between the antiparallel ground states by resonant microwave or thermal activation of the system. The static and dynamic properties of the vortex pairs in SAFs were found to be strongly dependent on the relative orientation of the vortex chiralities and vortex-core polarizations in the two ferromagnetic particles of the SAF. For parallel core polarizations, a strong monopole-like core-core interaction is found to dominate the magnetic properties of the system, increasing the characteristic resonance frequency by an order of magnitude.  Analytical theory and numerical micromagnetic simulations are used to explain the measured responses.

Resumo:
Each year a large number of wooden pallets are disposed of in US landfills, representing a significant portion of total wood usage. The purpose of this research was to gain an understanding of the numbers of pallets reaching landfills, specifically Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and Construction & Demolition (C&D) landfills. Also, the research was conducted to determine what, if anything, was done with the pallets once they were received by landfills.Mail questionnaires were sent to every state licensed MSW and C&D landfill identified in the US, except Alaska. Alaska was omitted because it is known to have many small landfills each representing a single small village. It was thought that these small landfills could skew the results. The questionnaire mailed to the landfills was based on a questionnaire used in a Virginia Tech study of landfills in 1995. Only minor changes were made to the previously used questionnaire so that the data collected would be comparable to previous results. This study found that, on average, MSW landfills received 138,000 tons of waste and C&D landfills received 36,000 tons of waste in 1998. This amounted to a total of 239 million tons of waste at MSW facilities and 40 million tons of waste at C&D facilities. Average tipping fees at MSW and C&D landfills were $29.31 and $16.84 per ton, respectively. Pallets represented 2.8 percent of waste at MSW facilities and 3.3 percent of waste at C&D facilities. This amounts to 138 million pallets reaching MSW landfills and 40 million pallets reaching C&D landfills in 1998. Of these pallets reaching landfills 22 million were recovered from MSW landfills and 16 million were recovered from C&D landfills. Recovered pallets from both types of landfills were typically ground and used for mulch, animal bedding, compost or boiler fuel. Infrequently, pallets were used as-is. But this was infrequent. When pallet material was sold by MSW and C&D facilities, it received between ten and twenty dollars per ton depending on end use and region of the country.

Resumo:
It is estimated that by 2025 the Asian population in the United States will be over 40 million; it will represent nearly 10% of the total U.S. population. Currently Chinese immigrants are the largest Asian group and constitute 22.6% of all Asian immigrants. With the Chinese immigrant population growing steadily, the Chinese elderly population will increase in the future. Historically, "Hsiao" (filial piety in English), rooted in Confucianism, teaches Chinese people to pay respect to living parents and provides rules for culturally defined intergenerational relationships and family caregiving, and putting family needs above individual interests. Among the Chinese, family caregiving is perceived as a duty, obligation, responsibility, and cultural virtue. The purpose of the study was to test a theoretical model specifying how factors including subjective beliefs of traditional filial obligation, subjective feelings about role requirements, perceived burdens, perceived rewards and use of coping affect Chinese caregivers' health in the United States. The aim of this study was to understand how caregivers' cultural background and the appraisal of family caregiving affect caregivers' well-being. Data from 137 caregivers were used to describe sample profile and for model testing. The original model failed to explain the data adequately. Two revised models were developed. Results suggest that data fit better with physical health, as indicated by CFI = .91 and the χ²/df ratio = 2.9, than mental health model, as indicated by CFI = .90 and the χ²/df ratio = 3.5. Findings suggest caregivers' beliefs of traditional filial obligation is a primary predictor for caregivers' physical health. Caregivers' subjective beliefs of traditional filial obligation affect caregivers' physical health not only directly but also indirectly. Implications for nursing research, practice, education and theory construction, and policy making were addressed. Limitations and recommendations for research design and interpretation of model fit were described. Further studies are needed to compare differences in cultural influences among different ethnic groups, identify effective coping style and test the effect of intervention caregivers' health.

Resumo:
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate how educational research, specifically Research-Based Instructional Strategies (RBIS), is adopted by education practice, specifically within the engineering Statics classroom. Using a systematic approach, changes in classroom teaching practices were investigated from the instructors\' perspective. Both researchers and practitioners are included in the process, combining efforts to improve student learning, which is a critical goal for engineering education. The study is divided into 3 stages and each is discussed in an individual manuscript. Manuscript 1 provides an assessment of current teaching practices; Manuscript 2 explores RBIS use by Statics instructors and perceived barriers of adoption; and Manuscript 3 evaluates adoption using Fidelity of Implementation.

A common set of concurrent mixed methods was used for each stage of this study. A quantitative national survey of Statics instructors (n =166) and 18 qualitative interviews were conducted to examine activities used in the Statics classroom and familiarity with nine RBIS.

The results of this study show that lecturing is the most common activity throughout Statics classrooms, but is not the only activity. Other common activities included working examples and students working on problems individually and in groups. As discussed by the interview participants, each of Rogers\' characteristics influenced adoption for different reasons. For example, Complexity (level of difficulty with implementation of an RBIS) was most commonly identified as a barrier. His study also evaluated the Fidelity of Implementation for each RBIS and found it to be higher for RBIS that were less complex (in terms of the number of critical components). Many of the critical components (i.e. activities required for implementation, as described in the literature) were found to statistically distinguish RBIS users and non-users.

This dissertation offers four contributions: (1) an understanding of current ractices in Statics; (2) the instructor perspective of the barriers to using RBIS in the classroom; (3) the use of Fidelity of Implementation as a unique evaluation of RBIS adoption, which can be used by future engineering education researchers; and (4) a systematic approach of exploring change in the classroom, which offers new perspectives and approaches to accelerate the adoption process.

The relationship between income and health has important implications for policy makers and businesses, and will continue to receive attention as healthcare reform takes hold in the U.S. Most existing literature looks at the relationship between income and either health status or health expenditures in isolation. However, in this research, we take advantage of the wealth of data available in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Medical Expenditures Panel Survey (MEPS) to answer two important, related questions regarding the income-health relationship for U.S. adults. First, we seek to determine how much sicker are poorer people than richer people (if at all), both in their perception and in actual terms. Second, we seek to determine if a poorer person is likely to consume more or less care than a richer person for given level of health or condition. To answer the first question, we start by examining the relationship between family income and health status using multiple regression techniques. For both perceived health and actual health, we find a curvilinear relationship between income and health, with diminishing returns associated with membership in successively higher-income groups. Depending on the status metric, the associated health benefits of membership in highincome cohorts tend to flatten once income reaches approximately 500-600% of the federal poverty level (FPL). We also find that marginal income at low income levels tends to be more strongly associated with reduced probability of poor health than increased probability of strong health. Regardless of the dependent variable chosen, we find that the shape of the relationship between income and health status is the same once we normalize the coefficients. Perceived and actual health are strongly related, although some of our results indicate that poorer people may be more pessimistic about their health than richer people. We find similar trends when we examine the relationship between income and health expenditures using the MEPS data. In this case, however, the diminishing returns associated with membership in higher-income cohorts are more accelerated, and the associated reductions in spending for membership in successive cohorts above 200-300% FPL are not significantly different from zero. When we add controls for health status, however, we find that the wealthiest members of the population are most likely to have the highest spending on healthcare, although not drastically so. In addition, we find the poorest members of the population do not have a tendency to overconsume care relative to their level of health.

Objectives: In this study, we investigated the relationship between serum vitamin D status and the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain among individuals on statin therapy. We hypothesized that lower serum vitamin D concentration would be associated with a higher odds of self-reported musculoskeletal pain among statin users. Background: HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, or statins, are widely used lipid-lowering drugs that significantly reduce morbidity and mortality associated with heart disease. Statin use is associated with a higher prevalence of self-reported musculoskeletal pain in the general population. Non-blinded studies have shown improvement in statin-associated myalgia symptoms and increased tolerance to statin therapy after treatment of vitamin D deficiency. Methods: We performed secondary data analyses using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2004. Employing SAS and SUDAAN, we carried out logistic regression to evaluate whether vitamin D deficiency modified the relationship between statin use and musculoskeletal pain. Based on a priori assumptions, we adjusted for the effects of demographics, selected disease states, and health habits in the logistic regression model. We also explored concentration-related trends of the effect of vitamin D on musculoskeletal pain. Results: Among 5941 participants age 40 years and older, the mean serum vitamin D concentration was 23.5 ng/mL [95% Confidence Interval (CI) 22.4, 24.2]. There was no significant difference in the mean serum vitamin D concentration between statin users (23.3 ng/mL, 95% CI 22.3, 24.3) and non-statin users (23.5 ng/mL, 95% CI 22.8, 24.2). Statin users had higher odds [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.57, 95% CI 1.15, 2.13)] of self-reported musculoskeletal pain in any area (specifically including the lower extremities, lower back, upper extremities, and upper back) compared with non-users. Vitamin D deficiency was not a predictor of musculoskeletal pain (aOR 0.95, 95% CI 0.70, 1.28) in the overall sample. However, we found vitamin D deficiency to have a significant interaction with statin use for the outcome of musculoskeletal pain (p for interaction = 0.01). After stratifying the sample according to statin use, we found that compared to statin users with a vitamin D concentration of 15 ng/mL or higher, those using statins with vitamin D concentration less than 15 ng/mL demonstrated substantially higher odds of musculoskeletal pain (aOR 2.56, 95% CI 1.25, 5.25). Assessment of vitamin D as a continuous variable did not reveal a concentration-related trend between increasing vitamin D concentrations and musculoskeletal pain (p for trend = 0.4). Conclusions: After controlling for multiple confounders, our analyses showed that serum vitamin D concentration less than 15 ng/mL was associated with musculoskeletal pain among statin users. However, among those not using statins, no association between serum vitamin D levels and self-reported musculoskeletal pain was demonstrated. We showed that vitamin D deficiency modifies the relationship between statio use and musculoskeletal pain. Treating vitamin D deficiency has other proven benefits including, bone health and skeletal muscle function. Our data suggests it may be reasonable to identify and treat vitamin D deficiency in patients who report musculoskeletal pain, using statins.

As a result of an arbitrary drawing of borders, most states today have forcefully incorporated groups which identify by culture and history with the states that border their 'new' home-states. For this reason, such groups are referred to as kin-minority groups. What distinguishes some European kin-minorities from those around the world is the response of their kin-states to their living situations. In the last decades, many European kin-states adopted policies known as Status Laws. Even though there are substantive differences among them, many of these states assumed an obligation to support the cultural flourishing of their kin-minority groups. The case-study of my dissertation is the Hungarian Status Law, which represents the response of the Hungarian state to its kin-minority groups. This dissertation examines the relationship between a state's duty and individuals' cultural membership in the context of kin-minority groups. Precisely, it assesses the importance of culture and history for allocating a kin-state's responsibility and defining the standard of care for its kin-minority groups. The inquiry shows that a kin-state's obligations challenge the liberal responses to the accommodation of cultural minorities in plural societies, disputing the allocation of responsibility, the standard of care and the relationship between a state's cultural duties and citizenship. First, I explore the role of history and culture in generating culture-related responsibilities beyond the borders of a state. Liberal theories unanimously contain such duties within a state's borders and tie them to citizenship. Contrary to such theories, I argue that history and cultural membership may generate obligations beyond a state's borders in the case of kin-minority groups. Second, the enquiry focuses on the impact of the kin-state's involvement upon the accommodation of minority cultural groups. The analysis shows that a kin-state's involvement fosters a better accommodation of its kin-minority groups within their home-states. I argue that a kin-state's obligations complement the home-state's multiculturalism.

This thesis reports the effect of applying static and ramped electric fields to quasi-bound Rydberg states of NO, with principal quantum number n = 25 - 32. The Rydberg states are excited by double resonance via the v'= 0,/V' = 0, and v' = 0,N' = 2 rovibrational states of the intermediate A2!' state of NO. Spectroscopic data is obtained by application of a static electric field ranging from 0 to 129 V cm"1, and ramped electric fields. In the presence of DC electric fields, the experimental Stark spectra presented in this thesis reveal a number of new interesting features, simulated using a matrix-diagonalisation approach. In this calculation, the adjustable parameters are the dipole transition moments from the various angular momentum components of the / -state, A, (/), for which just one set is used to obtain the qualitative agreement with the experimental spectra via two different rotational states of the / -state. The first detailed investigations of the selective field ionisation (SFI) of Rydberg states in a molecule are presented. The competition between electron-nuclear coupling and electron-field coupling is investigated and it is shown that the slew rate of the applied electric field can be exploited to control the rotational quantum state composition of field-ionised molecules.

This master’s thesis considers the Official Report of the Swedish Government Transpersoner i Sverige (SOU 2017:92), and its ambitions to increase intelligibility for trans people. Using a discourse-theoretical framework, I study the report’s production of meaning regarding power, norms and knowledge. In my analysis, the constitution of meaning leads to the establishment, in the report, of a specific understanding of intelligibility and of how intelligibility for trans people can and should be increased. Further, I note that ‘knowledge’, in the report, is positioned as beyond power and mobilized to counter the defined problems of unintelligibility. In particular, the report promotes measurable knowledge as the means by which to amend problems concerning lacking descriptions of trans people’s situation. Using Spade (2015) and Butler (1997), I elaborate on the positioning of the state with respect to the report’s project of increasing intelligibility, and show that state power is naturalized. The main conclusion of the thesis is that several of the report’s suggestions serve to legitimize state regulation of gendered subjectivity, specifically with respect to legal genders and their utilization in measurement and surveillance.

This thesis examines the argument that the Republic of Korea-United States Status of Forces Agreement (ROK-U.S. SOFA) affords greater immunities and protections to U.S. service personnel than does the Japan-U.S. SOFA. One significant source of tension for Korean-American relations over the years has been the belief of many Koreans that Japan is given greater authority to prosecute SOFA incidents because A) the Japan-U.S. SOFA is written to Japan's advantage and B) the United States unfairly favors Japan in the application of SOFA Criminal Jurisdiction. This thesis will test the accuracy of those beliefs. It will do this by first comparing the formal provisions in the SOFAs with the two countries. It will then compare their application in high-profile SOFA-related crimes and accidents over the past two decades both in South Korea and Japan to identify any possible pattern of inequity. By comparing the language of both SOFAs today with examples of how the United States has applied that language, this thesis finds that the language and application SOFA Criminal Jurisdiction provisions have changed to favor Korea today compared to Japan. This thesis also finds that the application in both countries has changed to give more deference to Host countries.

The purpose of this research was to study the nutritional status of United States Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (USCG/ LEDET) personnel before and after prolonged travel at sea. To date there is no information available regarding the nutritional status of Coast Guard personnel. Forty-seven subjects were studied in total, each served as their own control. Demographic and health history data was collected at baseline. Dietary and exercise data was collected before and during the deployment. Body composition was determined before and after a deployment. The results of this study revealed that the USCG/LEDET personnel had high cholesterol and decreased fiber intakes. Cholesterol intake during deployment (516.8±239.7 mg/day) was significantly higher (p= 0. 047) than pre-deployment (448.2 ± 144.3 mg/day). Fiber intake was significantly lower than recommended (p The results of this study indicate that LEDET personnel are put at higher nutritional risk while deployed and also have increased negative health behaviors associated with risk for Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and other related diseases. This is crucial information for the USCG so that action can be taken to improve the physical well being of their personnel.

Vulnerable populations comprise a growing number of people living with HIV/AIDS and are at increased risk for poorer health outcomes. The purpose of this research was to approximate the effect of the Ryan White CARE Act on the health status of people living with HIV/AIDS who were receiving medical care in the United States. The vulnerable populations model was utilized to identify appropriate variables for analysis as well as to provide a sequencing for the testing of models. Data analyzed in this study came from the 1996 Baseline Survey of the HIV Cost and Services Utilization Study (HCSUS), a cooperative study between RAND and the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (now known as the Agency for Health Care Quality and Research). Three analyses sequences, using different dependent variables, to estimate health status were conducted. In the first analysis, health status was measured by CD-4 count and stage of illness. In the second analysis, only CD-4 counts were used for health status. In the final analysis, health status was estimated based on AIDS diagnosis. Each of the three analyses included the same independent variables: race, gender, education, sexual orientation, income, insurance status, region of the country, receipt of case management, perceived health, and level of antiviral therapy. The three analyses suggested similar results. Specifically, that African Americans and women had better health status as compared to whites and men, respectively. Additionally, insurance, case management, and antiviral therapy were associated with poorer health status. Factors such as education, income, and region of the country yielded inconsistent results between models. To better understand the effect of the Ryan White CARE Act on health outcomes for people living with HIV/AIDS, future research should consider inclusion of a variable that more directly measures the CARE Act, such as payer source for medical care.

Using a nationally representative sample of individuals across all fifty United States from the 2016 American Community Survey (ACS), this research explores differences in the incidence and predictors of health insurance status across region (i.e. West, Midwest, South, and Northeast) for individuals age 18 and older. The data suggests that: 1) Individuals from the Northeast are the most likely to have some form of health insurance, while individuals from the South are the least likely; 2) The factors which influence health insurance status are relatively similar across all regions, though they often differ substantially in magnitude; 3) In some cases region can play a significant role in determining the type of insurance an individual has (i.e. Public versus Private). Policy makers will find these results useful to target specific factors within regions that may prove to increase the number of insured individuals. Furthermore, researchers may choose to use this paper as a current reference and starting point for further in-depth analysis on targeted factors within specific regions.

This thesis argues that the elite and urban women leaders of the Palestinian women's movement neglected to engage rural women and women living in refugee camps as their equals in a women's movement. Further, despite women's active presence in the public sphere, the sphere remained defined in masculine terms. As a result, Palestinian women, as "guests" in the domain of men, were easily pushed out after they had served their purpose in the nationalist crisis. What is remarkable is that even after Palestinian men reclaimed the public sphere, Palestinian women remained politically active in the private sphere. In order to understand how this was possible, we must look more closely at the terms "public sphere" and "private sphere".
