Biography is an important aspect of researching in education once one is planning for a narrative inquiry. Reading biography inspires me to think narratively. I am much interested in knowing and understanding the biography of the Dalai Lama not because of any religious footprints but because of his spiritual endeavours, which go beyond the humanist tradition of thinking. I have not canvassed any social research which questioned life before and after death. I do not have much interest in researching faith-based experience and the mystical experience of such a spiritual leader. I read a book from the sense of developing insights as a narrative inquirer.

John Henry Newman's Apologia Pro Vita Sua (1865) shows the divided self and the search for a spiritual identity. Sean O'Faolain's biography Newman's Way (1952) presents a new man in a larger social context. Self portrait and portrait prove quite different and the examination of the two texts tells much about the frontiers between autobiography and biography.

This article presents the biography of Saint Zygmunt Szczęsny Feliński (1822–1895), which is the basis for the exhibition in the museum dedicated to the memory of this outstanding nineteenth-century figure of the Polish Church. The cognitive and educational potential of Archbishop Feliński's life is emphasised in the narrative layer of the exhibition by means of modern multimedia solutions. The museum uses various forms of visual message, aimed both at viewers who prefer traditional exhibition solutions, as well as those with high skill levels and technological expectations. The Museum of St Zygmunt Feliński plays an important role in the historical education process and popularises the biography of the archbishop as a role model for life and action. By spreading the cult of the saint, it also meets the religious needs of visitors through contact with the material and spiritual heritage of the exhibition’s protagonist.

The concepts of heart (dil) and spiritual heart (kalb) are important in the anthropological worldview of Sufism. The heart is a place of love (ishq). Divine love (ishq-i illohi) becomes the source where other paths and choices in a person's life begin. At the same time, it is the source of both sinful and pure thoughts. The heart serves as a cognitive tool. A person's search for truth and self-knowledge of his spiritual essence is carried out through hearts. With the dominance of sensory cognition in a person, there is a contradictory connection between the heart (dil, ishk) and the mind (acl). Sufis in most cases relied more on sensory cognition, on the dictates and inclinations of the heart than of the mind. The source base of the research was such Muslim hagiographic works (manakib) as “Jama'ul-makamat”, dedicated to the biography of the leader of the Transoxiana Naqshbandi brotherhood Khojagi Ahmad Kosoni (died in 1542), “Saadiya”, dedicated to the biography of the Juybar (Bukhara) Khojas, "Lamahat min nafahat al-uns", dedicated to the famous Jahrit Sufis, in in particular, the biography of Sheikh Khudoydod Azizon (died in 1533). The subject of the study is the analysis of the concept of the heart, its place and interpretation in the Sufi worldview. This concept is studied purely within the framework of the Muslim hagiographic tradition, based on the perception of the authors of the manakibs of this issue. The purpose of the study is to reveal the meaning of the concept of “heart”, “spiritual heart” in the Sufi worldview and its relationship with other elements of being.

Marie Barbier (1663-1739) was a Congrégation de Notre-Dame of Montreal nun, superior and mystic. The story of her life remains in the form of two biographies. The first biography was written by Charles de Glandelet, her confessor and spiritual advisor, some time before his death in 1725. The second biography is an edited version of the Glandelet manuscript, almost 40 years after Marie Barbier's death. This article examines the many challenges faced in the attempt to construct a biography of this woman. It will explore not only the physical difficulties involved in interpreting these hand-written manuscripts, the obstacles presented by their hagiographical and 18th-century scholarly tradition, but also the barriers presented by post-modern scholarship with respect to the accession of "truth" and "voice."

The article describes the real biography of the great scientist Abu Nasir al-Farabi. In this regard, al-Farabi decided in the media that education was acquired not in his own country, but abroad in Arab countries. We have proof of how it was not, the knowledge received in their country, on landing. At the time when al-Farabi lived, at the same time, in Central Asia, Otrar, it was noted that culture, science and education were developing ahead of the Arabs, and that he was used to scientific Europeans. It was found that there is an Otrar library, which at that time was ahead of the library of Alexandria. (book Fund, content, etc.). This is almost the author of materials concerning the biography of our ancestor al-Farabi. Al-Farabi’s participation in the music of his ancestor, his writings are deeply interpreted, indicate that the work of scientists who saw his first teacher in this field is a recognized reality in that he is the chief specialist in the field of medicine.

The modern Russian-Ukrainian war actualized the work with the telling title "The Partition of Russia" (1941) by the Ukrainian public and cultural figure, doctor and writer, historian and geopolitician Yurii Lypa (1900–1944) on the history and prospects of Russian-Ukrainian relations, the past and future of the Russian Empire, and hence the interest in the figure of its author. In "The Partition of Russia", Yurii Lypa categorically insisted on the complete separation of the hostile, spiritually and economically mutually exclusive Muscovy-North and Ukraine-South, which must follow different historical paths for the good of humanity and for world order. He emphasized that each nation, like an individual person, will be able to express itself in the endless struggle with the material and spiritual environment. Only in such a struggle will the natural strength of Ukraine and its value for the peoples of the world be developed. Yurii Lypa did not write about destruction, but about the education and improvement of the Moscow population. He wrote that the point is not to physically destroy 400-500 thousand enthusiasts in St. Petersburg and Moscow who preach oppression, in his opinion, what was needed was the final eradication of the tradition of this oppression and unnatural claims. In his opinion, free labor, property rights, and appropriate legislation were the cures for a distorted worldview. Yurii Lypa emphasized that overcoming nomadic psychology is possible with a return to family traditions, stabilization of the economy, revival of moral authorities. The condition for recovery is the unloading of the imperial Comintern center. And the author also proposed minor surgical measures that will be useful for the population of the Russian lands and the whole world as another step towards the spiritual enrichment of humanity.

The article is the result of extensive research and generalization of available sources and literature that reflect the life and spiritual activities of Garifulla Ishan Gainullin – one of the most authoritative religious figures of the Middle Volga region of the Soviet period. He was the last Tatar Sheikh of the Naqshbandi tariqah, who was related to Dagestani Sheikh Bayazid Ishan Khairullin through Zainulla Ishan Rasulev. In his youth, he received a good theological educa-tion in a pre-revolutionary madrasah, passed many trials and overcame hardships of his time on his life's path. Despite the difficult situation in the country, he managed to gain additional reli-gious knowledge, spiritually improved himself and became an authoritative spiritual mentor (Ishan) in the Middle Volga region. Published for the first time are personal photos and docu-ments of Ishan, with some of them used in his biography. In Russian historiography, the person-ality of Garifulla Ishan Gainullin has not been studied in detail and many of its aspects are little known to general readers.

This paper explores a range of modes, intentions and problems of Baha'i biography, in order to offer some initial observations on the ways in which biographical literatures frame understandings of the individual in the context of community. It distinguishes between documentary, hagiological and critical modes of biography as these have emerged in the diverse literature of the world's religious traditions, as well as in the secular literature of the modern period. It suggests that much Baha'i biography has continued the traditions of remembrance and exempla, although more critical works have also begun to appear. The quest to write spiritual biographies that explore a subject's inner life and journey remains difficult, due mostly to limitations on sources, since few subjects give adequate exposure to their inner thoughts. Rather than privilege one tradition above any other, Baha'i biographies have to date drawn on the skills of the craft elaborated across generations, religions and cultures, while beginning to draw also on Baha'i scripture for inspiration productive of new insights into how lived lives can be depicted in literature.

Born in the town of Pereyaslavl Zalessky, Tikhon first became a parish priest there; then he was a monk and an experienced spiritual mentor. Later Tikhon was the abbot of the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery and Nikolo-Ugresh Monastery. The natural result of being a strict and ascetic “non-possessor” was the elevation of Tikhon to the rank of Bishop of Kolomna.

The analytical review of the main milestones in spiritual development of the great writer F.M. Dostoevsky’s personality from the standpoint of Orthodox dogma and morality is presented. The relevance of the research is determined by high interest in his life and work among each gen-eration of readers and the presence of a deep connection between his spiritual quest and moral problems that concern our contemporaries. Using biographical, cultural-historical and historical-functional research methods, a three-part model of the spiritual growth of F.M. Dostoevsky is con-structed, the core image of which is the figure of Jesus Christ. The features of the writer’s percep-tion of the Orthodox dogma at each stage of his life’s journey are studied. At the end of the work, a conclusion is made about high missionary and pedagogical potential contained both in works of art and in the biography of Russian literature classic, examples of the moral impact of his life and work on the fate of specific people are given. The research materials can be used in teaching Rus-sian Literature, Basics of Orthodox Culture and other disciplines in the course of a secondary edu-cation, as well as specialized secondary and higher education.

The paper provides archival and little-known materials that extend the information on the early period of Vladimir Gippius’ biography. In letters to his acquaintance, Matilda Menzel, he shares his thoughts on A.M. Dobrolyubov, on his first book, talks about studying at the university. In addition to personal letters, documents concerning Gippius’ service in the Department of Spiritual Affairs and university period are introduced into scientific circulation, facts about his first marriage are reported. The information presented in the paper is also important because Gippius placed all the facts of his personal biography in the broad perspective of Russian Decadence and Symbolism, creating his own autobiographical myth, which was determined by the following main stages: overcoming Decadence, then returning to decadence, the path from unbelief to faith, from “reaction” to “revolution”. Materials of Gippius’ personal fund in the Pushkin House, as well as to his service documents (RGIA) allow to clarify, correct and supplement the known facts of his biography. They also partly shed light on the internal plot of this biographical canvas — relations with A.M. Dobrolyubov, Gippius' departure from Decadence, which occurred largely under the influence of the Merezhkovskys.

Charles Williams has been and will undoubtedly continue to be the third wheel in the literary circle of the Inklings, behind his celebrity colleagues J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. The reasons for this are manifold and partially deserved. Williams was a prolific writer who published books in various genres (novels, poetry, drama, non-fiction) and on a wide range of subjects (theology, literary criticism, history, biography, the occult, etc.). Williams was also an influential editor at Oxford University Press and a respected lecturer. This article will focus on the most well-known area of his writing, his novels, which C. S. Lewis referred to as “spiritual shockers”, not in disdain, but in admiration. Attention will be on what I believe are his most important and accomplished novels: Descent into Hell and All Hallow’s Eve. My particular interest will be on his remarkably realistic treatment of the supernatural.

The objective of the article is to specify the essence of the chronicle as a sociocultural, anthropocentric phenomenon, as well as to justify the significance of biographical factors in the establishment and development of the master’s creative style. Its implementation has become possible via involving a number of general scientific methods (induction, deduction, synthesis, etc.) alongside with the following interdisciplinary approaches: culture studies, comparative, biographical, analytical, systemic, etc. It was confirmed that: the biography is the central genre of comparative humanitarian studies. It implements ontology, outlook and the key achievements of an individual. Due to its multifaceted and universal character, the biography appears an important factor of shaping, transforming and studying the master’s technique; it fixes and explicates the basic stages of a creative personality’s individual history, biography events that have presupposed active/passive character, justified the person’s spiritual requirements and revealed their philosophical paradigm. While rebroadcasting the master’s chronicle, the author simultaneously reveals the sociocultural situation in which the character used to exist, and demonstrates the dominating concepts of the period.

IN 1814 THE YOUNG Thomas Babington Macaulay tried his hand at the couplet to memorialize one of his Evangelical family’s heroes. Henry Martyn, chaplain to the British East India Company, had died in 1812 on his way home from duties in the east. With an adolescent’s enthusiasm for battle Macaulay engaged the tropes of spiritual quest and violent conquest that accompanied the evangelical spirit. To Martyn’s efforts he attributed, “Eternal trophies! Not with carnage red, / Not stained with tears by hapless captives shed, / But trophies of the Cross!” (281). Military violence gives way to conquest in a higher sphere, the world of the mission field. Nearly a half century later George Eliot evoked Martyn’s spiritual heroism at the outset of her career as a fiction writer. In Scenes of Clerical Life, Janet Dempster finds the inspiration to reform her life by reading the Memoir of Henry Martyn. Martyn’s example nerves her to engage in self-sacrifice and is the catalyst for her return to the scene of domestic violence; in an act of self-conquest Janet assumes the role of model wife and forgiving Christian.

The objective of the article is to analyze the genesis and age transformation of the artist’s biography; to distinguish the role of a creative personality’s chronicle in the late 21st century; to justify its significant role implementing the anthropological concepts of the period. Research methodology: systemic – by comprehensive solution of the research issues with the involvement of science and methodological elaborations of humanitarian study; culture studies – by identifying the mutual relations between public and spiritual processes; historical – by the grasp of the specifics of the chronicle’s establishment and development; comparative – by comparing the biographies of various centuries; analytical – by considering sources in accordance with the publication issue; theoretical generalization – by summarizing the research results. The article is dedicated to considering the artist’s biography of the Postmodernism epoch. The Postmodernism synthesized elaborations of the preceding eras and on that basis altered the established views on the chronicle’s essence. The genre obtains new functions, i.e. communicative, civilizational, synergetic, etc.; it reveals the era’s controversies having occurred due to the lack of moral ideals, ethics and aesthetics canons and personified leaders. The key task of the biography is realizing the macrocosm structure through recognizing the microcosm of a non-ordinary profile.

The concept of mental health is a global concept and is complementary to psychiatry. That is also because psychiatry disorder is often a deformed and caricatured image of mental health. Both mental health and psychiatric disorders implies physical body, psychism, as well as spiritual dimension of personality. Both of them interfere with individual and collective biography, with community traditions and customs, as well as with cultural, religious, and moral values. In the mental health and personality approaches the dimensional perspective plays a major role. According to this perspective, personality dimensions favor those spiritual experiences that enhance the coping abilities, self-determination, and are representing a way of cultivating those virtues which protect the mental health and allow the human being to respect also those things and events which don't depend of it.

IntroductionThere is a plurality of differing opinions defining borders between mental disorders and spiritual experiences. This research proposes criteria for clarifying those boundaries.ObjectivesSummarize practical criteria for clinicians to assess psychopathological symptoms with spiritual content and to attain a differential diagnosis from healthy spiritual experiences.AimsMerge different approaches from psychopathology, psychology of religion and religious studies to attain practical criteria.MethodsLiterature review using a phenomenological and critical approach.Results1. Severe psychiatric symptoms with religious content: (1) are usually in the context of personal impoverishment; (2) appear odd in cultural environments and within a person's biography; (3) do not enhance action or, in the phenomenological tradition, (4) these symptoms come from a weakening of the “intentional arc”. 2. A guiding map is suggested to evaluate spiritual expressions and their relationships with mild or moderate mental disorders and with mental health and personal growth. This map is developed by combining different traditions from the psychology of religion. 3. Psychiatric and psychological judgment of religious/spiritual experiences should be self-limited. There is a judgment about its content and about its validity or truth, which is only possible within the different spiritual traditions.ConclusionsPsychopathology establishes principles to discriminate some psychotic symptoms from healthy spiritual experiences. Psychology of religion offers some general rules to guide the psychological evaluation of spiritual beliefs and their influence on mental well-being and personal growth. This review opens fields for future research in relating psychopathology and the study of religious experience.Disclosure of interestThe author has not supplied his/her declaration of competing interest.
