AbstractThe spectre of music as a transcendent artistic ideal figures prominently in the literary criticism of Victorian aestheticism, though the extent to which aestheticism of the movement actually influenced the thinking of British composers has received only marginal scholarly attention. By the first decades of the twentieth century, aestheticism had become decidedly unfashionable even in literary circles, so it is unsurprising that composers of the time would choose to distance themselves from its rhetoric. The prevalence of a certain type of metaphysical conception of the creative act of the artist and intuitive act of the critic, however, may suggest an important remnant of aesthetic influence. Drawing from new critical trends which themselves mirror those of aestheticism, this article posits a revised conception of aesthetic discourse as an activity of self-cultivation, and examines its role in shaping the lives of selected British composer-critics from the early part of the twentieth century. By casting the aesthetic ethos not as a doctrine but as a set of internal practices that inform the creation and subversion of doctrine, the article demonstrates how a ‘relational musicology’ can act as a tool for historical inquiry.

The structural presence of young migrants leads us to investigate the different levels and practices through which inclusion and exclusion processes are declined in daily life also considering the persistence of apparent and concealed barriers affecting the construction of new forms of political, social and cultural cohesion. Drawing on life stories of young people who arrived in Italy from the country of origin at different stages of their educational formation and socialization process and on fieldwork, this ethnographic paper explores the material and symbolic consequences engendered by the tension existing between Italian educational policy and norms regulating the status of migrants and more in general the effects of immigration policies. A case study conducted in the city of Genoa provides evidence of discrepancies between the aims of some institutions, in particular schools, which even if with lots of contradictions try to valorize multiple belongings and to adhere to international Conventions on human rights, and an “outside” context which ties the permit of residence in Italy to the sphere of labour or to the involvement in the education system provided that the family of a dependent major student have the required income. This fact limits the opportunities and redefines the rights both of second generations and adult migrants educated elsewhere and migrated in search for a new or better life. The expectations of young migrants with multiple identities are thus betrayed because they have to confront walls and barriers which distance them from citizens, citizenship and connected rights.

Water is one of the important factors affecting pork quality. In this study, near-infrared (NIR) spatially resolved (SR) spectroscopy was used to detect the water content of pork. The SR spectra of 150 pork samples were collected within the light source–detector (LS-D) distance range of 4–20 mm (distance interval 1 mm). Models were established based on single-point SR spectra of 17 different LS-D distances and combination SR spectra. The results indicated that combination SR spectra achieved better model performance than the single-point SR spectra, and the LS-D distance significantly affected the model accuracy. The optimal LS-D distance combination of 5, 7, 10, and 12 mm provided the best detection model with the calibration determination coefficient (R2C) of 0.915 and prediction determination coefficient (R2P) of 0.878. Using the competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) algorithm, 24 characteristic wavelengths were selected. The model built with the characteristic wavelengths also exhibited good detection accuracy, with a R2C of 0.909 and a R2P of 0.867, and the number of wavelengths was greatly reduced compared to the full-wavelength model. This study demonstrated that SR spectroscopy combined with the optimized LS-D distances and screened characteristic wavelengths can be a powerful tool for detecting the water content of pork.

ABSTRACT Gaia measures the five astrometric parameters for stars in the Milky Way, but only four of them (positions and proper motion, but not distance) are well measured beyond a few kpc from the Sun. Modern spectroscopic surveys such as APOGEE cover a large area of the Milky Way disc and we can use the relation between spectra and luminosity to determine distances to stars beyond Gaia’s parallax reach. Here, we design a deep neural network trained on stars in common between Gaia and APOGEE that determines spectro-photometric distances to APOGEE stars, while including a flexible model to calibrate parallax zero-point biases in Gaia DR2. We determine the zero-point offset to be $-52.3 \pm 2.0\, \mu \mathrm{as}$ when modelling it as a global constant, but also train a multivariate zero-point offset model that depends on G, GBP − GRP colour, and Teff and that can be applied to all ≈58 million stars in Gaia DR2 within APOGEE’s colour–magnitude range and within APOGEE’s sky footprint. Our spectro-photometric distances are more precise than Gaia at distances ${\gtrsim} 2\, \mathrm{kpc}$ from the Sun. We release a catalogue of spectro-photometric distances for the entire APOGEE DR14 data set which covers Galactocentric radii $2\, \mathrm{kpc} \lesssim R \lesssim 19\, \mathrm{kpc}$; ${\approx} 150\, 000$ stars have ${\lt} 10{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ uncertainty, making this a powerful sample to study the chemo-dynamical structure of the disc. We use this sample to map the mean [Fe/H] and 15 abundance ratios [X/Fe] from the Galactic Centre to the edge of the disc. Among many interesting trends, we find that the bulge and bar region at $R \lesssim 5\, \mathrm{kpc}$ clearly stands out in [Fe/H] and most abundance ratios.

AbstractWe present individual distances to three PNe: NGC 6537, NGC 6781 and NGC 7027, determined by the extinction-distance method. These objects are part of a larger sample (35) of PNe that we observed at ORM. In order to apply this method, and to obtain accurate distances, we determined the spectral type of 40 to 60 stars in the line of sight of each PNe. This implied the necessity of classifying few thousands of stellar spectra with S/N ratio between 10 and 60. To solve such need we developed an ANN system to perform automatic spectral classification which could classify spectra with S/N ratio as low as 20 with an accuracy better than 2 spectral subtypes. In this poster we compare the accuracy of such distances with previous distance determinations using other methods. We conclude that it is possible to use this method to obtain the distance of a large number of PNe with better precision.

It does not take long walking through a modern hospital to appreciate how much the practice of medicine is influenced by advanced technology that impacts diagnosis and treatment as well as greatly enhancing overall patient outcomes. This technology has allowed us to increase diagnostic efficiency and accuracy as well as managing complex illnesses. However, these advances in diagnosis and medical/surgical management have sometimes led to a sacrifice in the patient-doctor relationship that has impeded patient’s perception of personal interaction and care leading to a climate of distance and distrust. Ultimately, if a patient is diagnosed correctly with minimal care and compassion, have we truly met our responsibilities as physicians? Lacking in the current teaching of medicine is often an explicit discussion of the importance of touch as a therapeutic modality rather than just a consequence of a thorough physical examination. Allopathic medicine would do well to incorporate the basic principles of osteopathic medicine’s emphasis on touch in the everyday practice of medicine. Physicians can provide compassionate care only when empathy is present, which is reinforced by direct contact with patients. Technology should be used to supplement, not replace, the physician-patient relationship. The great challenge in medicine is not in the learning of our professional skills, rather it is in its competent and compassionate administration within the confines of the modern medical world. Within the constant spectre of disease and its complications, our central role as physicians is to blend the technology to diagnose and treat with the compassion and imperative to relieve suffering and by doing so, adding to the joy of life.

Abstract We studied strong-motion spectra observed for three Mw 7.8 to 8.0 earthquakes (the 1985 Michoacán, Mexico; 1985 Valparaíso, Chile; and 1983 Akita-Oki, Japan earthquakes). We determined the decay of spectral amplitude with distance from the station, considering different measures of distance from a finite fault. We compared strong-motion spectra (Fourier acceleration spectra) observed for these three earthquakes with those estimated from the source spectrum determined from teleseismic P waves. We scaled the teleseismic source spectra to produce reference strong-motion spectra at periods from 1 to 10 sec using a simple physical model of far-field S body waves from a point source recorded at the surface of a homogeneous half-space. For all three earthquakes the reference spectral amplitudes at periods of 1 to 5 sec are about half the observed ones at distances of about 50 km. The difference increases as the distance increases. At distances of 200 to 300 km, the reference spectrum is about 1/10 of the observed one. The difference between the reference and the observed spectrum is attributed to the contribution of phases other than direct S waves and to site response. We applied corrections for the finiteness (spatial extent) of the source using a simple model of rupture propagation on a dipping two-dimensional fault. Including the source finiteness did not improve the estimate substantially at periods from 1 to 20 sec, but it modeled significant changes in the signal duration as a function of azimuth for the 1985 Michoacán earthquake. Our results can be used to establish empirical relations between the observed spectra and the half-space responses, depending on the distance and the site condition. If such empirical relations can be established, source spectra determined from teleseismic records may be used to estimate strong motions.

Let $G$ be a connected graph with a distance matrix $D$. The distance eigenvalues of $G$ are the eigenvalues of $D$, and the distance energy $E_D(G)$ is the sum of its absolute values. The transmission $Tr(v)$ of a vertex $v$ is the sum of the distances from $v$ to all other vertices in $G$. The transmission matrix $Tr(G)$ of $G$ is a diagonal matrix with diagonal entries equal to the transmissions of vertices. The matrices $D^L(G)= Tr(G)-D(G)$ and $D^Q(G)=Tr(G)+D(G)$ are, respectively, the Distance Laplacian and the Distance Signless Laplacian matrices of $G$. The eigenvalues of $D^L(G)$ ( $D^Q(G)$) constitute the Distance Laplacian spectrum ( Distance Signless Laplacian spectrum ). The subdivision graph $S(G)$ of $G$ is obtained by inserting a new vertex into every edge of $G$. We describe here the Distance Spectrum, Distance Laplacian spectrum and Distance Signless Laplacian spectrum of some types of subdivision related graphs of a regular graph in the terms of its adjacency spectrum. We also derive analytic expressions for the distance energy of $\bar{S}(C_p)$, partial complement of the subdivision of a cycle $C_p$ and that of $\overline {S\left( {C_p }\right)}$, complement of the even cycle $C_{2p}$.

The overall spectral profiles closely resemble one another, indicating similar iron-binding sites. The simulation of the diferric ovotransferrin spectrum suggests a first co-ordination shell consisting of six low-Z ligands (nitrogen/oxygen), two ligands at a distance of approx. 0.185 nm (1.85 A) and four ligands at approx. 0.204 nm (2.04 A). The two shorter distances may correspond to Fe-O (tyrosine), whereas the longer distance is consistent with Fe-N (histidine) and Fe-O (water). Detailed analysis of the spectra of the N-terminal and C-terminal fragments indicates a difference in the short ligand distance.

AbstractThe degree of analogy between fossil and contemporary pollen spectra in Europe has been investigated using the chord-distance dissimilarity measure. No-analog pollen spectra represent vegetation without a modern analog and hence, by inference, represent macroclimatic conditions different from any occurring in the region today. Such spectra have minimum chord distances that exceed a threshold value assessed using contemporary samples from the same and different vegetation u units. Contoured maps of minimum chord distance portray the changing patterns of analogous and no-analog pollen spectra, and hence vegetation units, since 13,000 yr B.P. No-analog vegetation units have been extensive in some regions for much of the Holocene, persisting as recently as 1000 years ago in many areas. The chord-distance measure has also been used to explore the patterns, extent, and rates of change in European pollen spectra since 13,000 yr B.P. Pollen spectra changed rapidly during late-glacial and early Holocene times and during the last millennium. Paleoclimatic changes have brought about the major changes in the Holocene paleovegetation of Europe. Human impact upon European vegetation has obscured neither the contemporary relationship between pollen spectra and vegetation nor the climatically determined long-term changes of vegetation across the continent since 13,000 yr B.P.

We present the results of an analysis of 28 spectra of 18 Polaris field A–G V stars obtained in 2016–2023. Derived radial velocities and Teff along with distances and reddenings from the Gaia DR3 catalog allowed us to calculate radii of the stars and compare them with calibration relationships “Spectral type – Luminosity” for MS stars. As a result, radii and distances for 9 stars were found overestimated compared to those determined photometrically. Therefore, the DR3 distances are unreliable and should be revisited. According to our data for these stars and their photometric distances, 15 objects belong to a possible old open cluster that is currently dissolved in the Polaris field at a distance ∼70–110pc, while two objects belong to the thick disk, and one belongs to a possible another star group located at a distance of 130 pc.

k-mer-based distances are often used to describe the differences between communities in metagenome sequencing studies because of their computational convenience and history of effectiveness. Although k-mer-based distances do not use information about taxon abundances, we show that one class of k-mer distances between metagenomes (the Euclidean distance between k-mer spectra, or EKS distances) are very closely related to a class of phylogenetically-informed β-diversity measures that do explicitly use both the taxon abundances and information about the phylogenetic relationships among the taxa. Furthermore, we show that both of these distances can be interpreted as using certain features of the taxon abundances that are related to the phylogenetic tree. Our results allow practitioners to perform phylogenetically-informed analyses when they only have k-mer data available and provide a theoretical basis for using k-mer spectra with relatively small values of k (on the order of 4-5). They are also useful for analysts who wish to know more of the properties of any method based on k-mer spectra and provide insight into one class of phylogenetically-informed β-diversity measures.

Abstract In the absence of a parallax distance to a pulsar or a surviving binary in a supernova remnant (SNR), distances to Galactic SNRs are generally very uncertain. However, by combining Gaia data with wide-field, multifiber echelle spectroscopy, it is now possible to obtain accurate distances to many SNRs with limited extinction by searching for the appearance of high-velocity Ca ii or Na i absorption lines in hot stars as a function of distance. We demonstrate this for the SNR S147 using the spectra of 259 luminous blue stars. We obtain a median distance of 1.37 kpc (1.30–1.47 kpc at 90% confidence), which is consistent with the median parallax distance to the pulsar of 1.46 kpc (1.12–2.10 kpc at 90% confidence) but with significantly smaller uncertainties. Our distance is also consistent with the distance to the candidate unbound binary companion in this SNR, HD 37424 at a photogeometric distance of 1.45 kpc (1.40–1.50 kpc at 1σ). The presence of high-velocity absorption lines is correlated with the Hα/O [iii] emission-line flux of the SNR but not with the radio flux.

AbstractRR Lyrae (RR Lyr) stars are a well-known and useful distance indicator for old stellar populations such as globular clusters and dwarf galaxies. Fundamental-mode RR Lyr (RRab) stars are commonly used to measure distances, and the accuracy of the determined distance is strongly constrained by metallicity. Here, we investigate the metallicity dependence in the period–luminosity (PL) relation of double-mode RR Lyr (RRd) stars. We find and establish a linear relation between metallicity and period or period ratio for RRd stars. This relation can predict the metallicity as accurately as the low-resolution spectra. Based on this relation, we establish a metallicity-independent PL relation for RRd stars. Combining the distance of the Large Magellanic Cloud and Gaia parallaxes, we calibrate the zero point of the derived PL relation to an error of 0.022 mag. Using RRd stars, we measure the distances of globular clusters and dwarf galaxies with an accuracy of 2-3% and 1-2%, respectively. In the future, RRd stars could anchor galaxy distances to an accuracy of 1.0% and become an independent distance ladder in the Local Group.

Abstract In the deep-sea direct arrival region, a significant multipath characteristic is presented by the propagation of acoustic signals. This characteristic is closely linked to the distance and depth of the sound source and can be utilized for source localization. In this study, the changes in incidence angle characteristics of multipath signals at different distances and depths are analysed initially. Subsequently, the high-resolution azimuthal spectra are obtained using the Sparse Bayesian Learning (SBL) method. The azimuthal spectra are then matched with multiple incidence angles using the Gaussian kernel function, facilitating the localization of sound sources. Throughout this paper, the impacts of different distance, depth, and SNR conditions on the model are assessed through simulations. Furthermore, the model’s validity is confirmed by utilizing experimental data from an explosion sound source.

This paper presents the process and fundamental results of a comprehensive ground motion prediction equation (GMPE, or “attenuation” relationship) developed for inelastic response spectra. We used over 3,100 horizontal ground motions recorded in 64 earthquakes with moment magnitudes ranging from 4.3–7.9 and rupture distances ranging from 0.1–199 km. For each record, we computed inelastic spectra for ductility ranging from one (elastic response) to eight. Our GMPE correlates inelastic spectral ordinates to earthquake magnitude, site-to-source distance, fault mechanism, local soil properties, and basin effects. The developed GMPE is used in both deterministic and probabilistic hazard analyses to directly generate inelastic spectra. This is in contrast to developing “attenuation” relationships for elastic response spectra, carrying out a hazard analysis, and subsequently adopting approximate rules to derive inelastic response from elastic spectra.

Two-dimensional (2D) correlation spectroscopy, which takes advantage of the apparent enhancement of spectral resolution, is known to be useful in qualitative discrimination of seemingly similar samples. The possibility of quantitative classification of 2D correlation spectra is even more desirable. Two useful parameters, namely Euclidian distance and correlation coefficient between 2D correlation spectra, are introduced for this purpose. Dry and sweet red wine samples are used to demonstrate the utility of these parameters. The distances between the 2D infrared (IR) spectra of sweet and dry red wines are roughly proportional to the differences of sugar contents in them. The result shows that the two parameters are useful measures for the quantitative evaluation of the similarity among the samples and their corresponding 2D correlation spectra.

Nature and origin of the high-velocity clouds (HVCs) remain enigmatic after thirty years (Wakker & van Woerden 1997,ARA&A,35, 217), owing to lack of distance information. Hypotheses range from supernova shells at 100 pc to intergalactic clouds at 1 Mpc. On statistical grounds, Blitz et al. (1996,BAAS,28, 1349) claim that the HVCs are “remnants of Local Group formation, best explained as members of the Local Group of galaxies”. Reliable distances must come from the presence or absence of absorption at the HVC's velocity in spectra of stars at different distances. For Complex A, MgII absorption is seen inHSTspectra of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk 106, but not in the star PG0859+593 at 4 kpc (Wakker et al. 1996,ApJ,473, 834). La Palma spectra of the RR Lyr star AD UMa at 11 kpc distance show CaII absorption by Complex A at both K and H, which is lacking at 4 kpc. These absorptions are not confused with stellar metal lines. Our distance bracket 4 <d< 11 kpc places Complex A in the Galactic Halo, at 2.5 <z< 7.5 kpc above the plane; a distance similar to Local Group galaxies is excluded. The HI mass implied lies between 0.15 and 1.2 times 106M⊙. Our result precludes local origins for this HVC. It allows an origin in a Galactic Fountain, or in interaction of infalling intergalactic material (from the Magellanic System or the Local Group) with the Galactic Halo.

At some time, in the childhood of spectral graph theory, it was conjectured that non-isomorphic graphs have different spectra, i.e. that graphs are characterized by their spectra. Very quickly this conjecture was refuted and numerous examples and families of non-isomorphic graphs with the same spectrum (cospectral graphs) were found. Still some graphs are characterized by their spectra and several mathematical papers are devoted to this topic. In applications to computer sciences, spectral graph theory is considered as very strong. The benefit of using graph spectra in treating graphs is that eigenvalues and eigenvectors of several graph matrices can be quickly computed. Spectral graph parameters contain a lot of information on the graph structure (both global and local) including some information on graph parameters that, in general, are computed by exponential algorithms. Moreover, in some applications in data mining, graph spectra are used to encode graphs themselves. The Euclidean distance between the eigenvalue sequences of two graphs on the same number of vertices is called the spectral distance of graphs. Some other spectral distances (also based on various graph matrices) have been considered as well. Two graphs are considered as similar if their spectral distance is small. If two graphs are at zero distance, they are cospectral. In this sense, cospectral graphs are similar. Other spectrally based measures of similarity between networks (not necessarily having the same number of vertices) have been used in Internet topology analysis, and in other areas. The notion of spectral distance enables the design of various meta-heuristic (e.g., tabu search, variable neighbourhood search) algorithms for constructing graphs with a given spectrum (spectral graph reconstruction). Several spectrally based pattern recognition problems appear in many areas (e.g., image segmentation in computer vision, alignment of protein-protein interaction networks in bio-informatics, recognizing hard instances for combinatorial optimization problems such as the travelling salesman problem). We give a survey of such and other graph spectral recognition techniques used in computer sciences.

Corona of two graphs has been defined in [F. Harary, Graph Theory (Addison-Wesley, 1969)]. In this paper, we study the distance and the distance Laplacian spectra of corona of two graphs and describe the complete distance (distance Laplacian) spectrum for some particular cases. As an application, we show that the corona operation can be used to create distance singular graphs. We also show that these results enable us to construct infinitely many pairs of distance (respectively, distance Laplacian) cospectral graphs. Last, we give a graph transformation and discuss its effect on the distance Laplacian spectral radius.

Abstract The vertical components of the S wave trains recorded on the Eastern Canadian Telemetered Network (ECTN) from 1980 through 1990 have been spectrally analyzed for source, site, and propagation characteristics. The data set comprises some 1033 recordings of 97 earthquakes whose magnitudes range from M ≈ 3 to 6. The epicentral distances range from 15 to 1000 km, with most of the data set recorded at distances from 200 to 800 km. The recorded S wave trains contain the phases S, SmS, Sn, and Lg and are sampled using windows that increase with distance; the acceleration spectra were analyzed from 1.0 to 10 Hz. To separate the source, site, and propagation characteristics, an inversion for the earthquake corner frequencies, low-frequency levels, and average attenuation parameters is alternated with a regression of residuals onto the set of stations and a grid of 14 distances ranging from 25 to 1000 km. The iteration between these two parts of the inversion converges in about 60 steps. The average attenuation parameters obtained from the inversion were Q = 1997 ± 10 and γ = 0.998 ± 0.003. The most pronounced variation from this average attenuation is a marked deamplification of more than a factor of 2 at 63 km and 2 Hz, which shallows with increasing frequency and increasing distance out to 200 km. The site-response spectra obtained for the ECTN stations are generally flat. The source spectral shape assumed in this inversion provides an adequate spectral model for the smaller events (Mo < 3 × 1021 dyne-cm) in the data set, whose Brune stress drops range from 5 to 150 bars. For the five events in the data set with Mo ≧ 1023 dyne-cm, however, the source spectra obtained by regressing the residuals suggest that an ω2 spectrum is an inadequate model for the spectral shape. In particular, the corner frequencies for most of these large events appear to be split, so that the spectra exhibit an intermediate behavior (where |ü(ω)| is roughly proportional to ω).

Together with our partner Baudynamik Heiland & Mistler the university of Applied Sciences is developing a practical prediction method for construction machine induced vibrations. The project is sponsored by BMWi. The new method takes the construction machine parameters and the soil characteristics much more realistically into account. This is done by a special measuring procedure. The first step of this procedure is to measure the transfer admittance of the specific machine at a location „1“ and the vibration responses at different distances. Then the machine spectra are calculated from the measured data at each distance. In a second step the transfer admittance i.e. in building (location „2“) are measured for an impulse force induced by a special impulse generator. Then the previously obtained machine spectra together with the impulse response is mathematically transformed in the frequency domain to obtain a prediction of the vibrations in the building caused by the machine by back transformation in the time domain. The so predicted vibrations can be used to evaluate the admissible vibration given DIN 4150-3. The two step procedure is based on the assumption that the vibrations transfer in the soil and in the building can be described as linear systems. Within the paper this assumption will be proofed for a specific vibration plate. The procedure describe above is applied to three different places with completely different soil characteristics. The machine force spectra are obtained for each soil at different distances. The data evaluation shows the significant influence of the distance to the calculated machine spectra. The influence of the impulse level (lower or higher impulse forces) shows to be of minor significance. A comparison of the force spectra obtain for the three different soils shows that the machine spectra are in satisfactory accordance. As result it can be stated that the assumed of linear vibration transfer for vibrations caused by the vibration plate can be satisfactorily proofed. The proposed prediction method is further developed and proofed.
