Advances in Internet technologies have made it seemingly possible and easy to create digital collections, repositories and libraries. However, supporting diverse information uses that facilitate interaction beyond searching and browsing is in the early stages. Interactive digital libraries, or interactional digital libraries as we prefer to call them, are still evolving. This special issue tries to bring together work that is being done to incorporate interactivity in digital libraries.

The investigation was undertaken to establish, in the first place, whether it is correct to assume that university library managers in South Africa do understand the main tenets of marketing. Secondly, the investigation was undertaken to determine whether these librarians actually do implement some or all of the principles of marketing in the management of their libraries. The study was carried out in two parts: a literature survey and an empirical investigation. The investigation was confined to university libraries in South Africa. The literature survey of the relevant marketing literature had a twofold purpose. In the first place, the marketing of libraries could only be properly appreciated within the context of understanding what is meant by marketing. Secondly, it was an underlying assumption of the investigation that in order to determine whether the management of South African university libraries did understand and apply the principles of marketing, the questions posed to them in the survey would of necessity have to reflect the principles, concepts, terminology and techniques of marketing, as established in the literature survey. The survey of marketing literature therefore endeavoured to establish clearly the main tenets of marketing and the techniques of marketing planning, the broadened marketing concept which has extended marketing to non-profit organizations, and, the significance of the interactive relationship of services marketing. A survey of the relevant literature of librarianship was undertaken to gain an insight into how marketing was perceived by the Anglo-American library world. It was against this broader background of the literature of librarianship that the South African experience was considered. As part of the empirical investigation a questionnaire was constructed and mailed to the respondents in order to determine whether the principles of marketing are understood and implemented by university libraries in South Africa. The analysis of the data obtained from the questionnaire indicated that the management of South African university libraries have a general understanding of the principles of marketing, although at present only a small minority have an in-depth knowledge of it. From the analysis of the data it is also apparent that South African university library managers to a greater or lesser extent do carry out some of the main activities of marketing, although, for the present, they do not necessarily consider that they are implementing formal marketing planning in their libraries. Only a small minority of university libraries are actually engaged in some formal marketing activities.

Cochrane, Lynn Scott. "The Presidential Library System: A Quiescent Policy Subsystem". Diss., Virginia Tech, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/30242.

Resumo:
This study examines the Presidential Library System, an agency within the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), as an example of a policy subsystem. A policy subsystem may be defined as an informal political coalition of individuals from different parts of a formal policy structure who cooperate to influence policy-making. Actors in a policy subsystem are multifarious, they span both public and private sectors at various levels of government, and may include agency personnel, congressional committee members, interest group participants, citizens of localities affected by the subsystem, and others. A policy subsystem's strength lies in its ability to draw upon bureaucratic expertise, legislative leverage, and interest-group capacities to communicate with the government about the area of public policy it is vitally concerned with. Despite the 60 year existence of the Presidential Library System, its nationwide geographic distribution, and its approximately $30 million/year allocation from the federal budget, it is not widely recognized as a policy system and it has not been the subject of a detailed, scholarly description. The Presidential Libraries policy subsystem is described by tracing its development and mapping the richness of the administrative and political processes which support its continuing viability. The specific research questions addressed are:1) how do the administrative and political processes of this policy subsystem unfold, 2) how do these processes provide system maintenance, and 3) who are the players? Qualitative research techniques, via a case study methodology, were used to address these questions.. In-depth interviews were conducted with the directors of the ten Presidential Libraries, the staff of the Office of Presidential Libraries at NARA, and key stakeholders in the system. Questions addressed included: what do all of the presidential libraries share?, what is unique about each?, to what extent IS the Presidential Library System a policy subsystem?, and how is government organized to deal with presidential libraries and their mission of 1) preserving and providing researchers access to presidential papers and historical materials, and 2) providing museums and educational programming designed to give the general public a better understanding of the individual Presidents, the institution of the Presidency, and the American political system as a whole?

This dissertation addresses the problem of the «Digital Library» from the point of view of the «Traditional Library». The work comprises an analytical approach to the problem, being proposed a model for the «Digital Library» according to the perspective and requirements of the «Traditional Library» in face of the new emerging technological paradigm. This model is analysed for the cases of the specialized library and the deposit library, when facing the problem of the digital publishing. As a result, it is proposed a strategy for the deposit library based on the identification of scenarios and publication genres. As a consequence of this process, there were also identified and analysed new problem, such as the new concept of agent, the relationship of the concept URN identifiers? space with the problem, and the problem of the metadata. Metadata is now a new concern for the «Digital Library», from which results new requirements and scenarios raising the problem of the interoperability.

In the last two decades of his life, Harry S. Truman formally established the office of the ex-presidency in the public eye. The goals he wanted to accomplish and the legislation passed to help Truman achieve these aims led the way for Truman and other former presidents to play a significant role in American public life. Men who had occupied the nation's highest office had a great deal to offer their country, and Truman saw to it that he and other former presidents had the financial and the institutional support to continue serving their nation in productive ways. Although out of the White House, Harry S. Truman wanted to continue to play an active role in the affairs of the nation and the Democratic party. In pursuing this goal, he found that he was limited by a lack of financial support and was forced to turn to the federal government for assistance. While Truman was active for more than a decade after he left Washington, his two most important legacies were helping push for federal legislation to provide financial support for ex-presidents and to organize and maintain presidential libraries. Truman believed that these endeavors were a small price for the nation to pay to support thee former occupants of the nation's highest office. Furthermore, Truman believed that presidential libraries were essential in preserving and disseminating the history of the nation's highest office. Truman's other activities including heavy involvement in partisan affairs. While he tried unsuccessfully to determine the party's presidential candidates, his involvement in the Democratic party and attendance at partisan events displayed his level of commitment to the party and his determination to play a role in its activities.

In recent years it has been acknowledged that the practice of knowledge management can play an important role to ensure an organisation’s competitive edge within an industry. This study focuses on knowledge sharing practices in university libraries with special reference to the Unisa Library. The aim of the research project was therefore to establish whether the Unisa Library is receptive to knowledge sharing practices, whether there is a need for knowledge management and more specifically for a knowledge sharing strategy. Thus the objective was to establish the extent to which knowledge sharing practices occur among professional library staff, albeit unknowingly, in their daily activities. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. A questionnaire was delivered in person to professional librarians while interviews were conducted with managers from the various directorates of the library. The questions explored the knowledge sharing practices, including challenges within the library. They were based on internationally accepted knowledge management themes which include the role of leadership, organisational structure, organisational culture, technology, processes in enabling the effective practice of knowledge management.

The use and design of library spaces in higher education is a theme that has come to the forefront of user needs in the past few years. Academic libraries are redesigning their spaces to accommodate the 21st century user. The 21st century user is often labeled as Generation Y and requires a different set of knowledge and skills. In today’s knowledge economy, core skills include creativity, problem solving and collaboration. Libraries are creating space to accommodate the needs of these new users. They are developing group work areas, relaxation or pause areas, technology hubs and discussion rooms. This study has investigated how to redesign academic libraries, using Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) Cape Town branch as a pilot study. The researcher used the concept of library "as place" or "3ʳᵈ place" as a theory. The framework interrogated the ten qualities of a good library space. The researcher used a mixed method research design to conduct this study. A questionnaire of which multiple copies were made, interviews and internal statistics were used to gather data. The results of the study reflected that the library is functional, can be adapted, the space is accessible and varied, it is conducive to motivating and inspiring people, it does promote interactivity between users and library services, and is environmentally suitable, flexible and has a wow factor. All of these characteristics conform to McDonald’s ten qualities of a good library space.

This thesis examines the rise of modern Chinese libraries between the1840s and the 1930s in the context of educational reform, intellectual development, national regeneration and state building. It focuses on how educational reform and other factors influenced the way in which modern libraries came into being in China. It argues that the establishment of modern libraries in China was a complicated and long process, as China followed neither the “industrialisation and democracy” model of the United States nor the “modernisation” model of Meiji Japan. Modern libraries were introduced into China in the closing years of the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) to facilitate educational reform and national regeneration. The Nationalist government, established in 1928, further stimulated the expansion of Chinese libraries as part of the government’s state building efforts. This thesis examines the Chinese case in the emergence of modern libraries: the case of “underdevelopment” with distinctive Chinese characteristics. To explore the factors that contributed to the underdevelopment of modern Chinese libraries as they emerged, this thesis employs a case study of the Metropolitan Library of Beijing—the predecessor of the National Library of China—between 1909 and 1937 in terms of its formation, early development, and problems. This analysis reveals that both the macro and micro factors conducive to library development were not present in China before the 1920s. Even when the conditions improved during the 1920s and the 1930s, especially during the Nanjing Decade, the development of modern Chinese libraries was far from satisfactory for various reasons, with low library consciousness being an important one. The Conclusion of this thesis outlines the continuing impediment of low library consciousness in China today.

My master’s thesis is a study of acquisition of photographies during 1958-2008. The questions I proceed from is what patterns lies behind the Royal library's acquisition of photography and how the process of acquisition looks like. The theoretical base which I lean on consists partly of a problematization of the process of cultural heritage and partly of organizational theory. The problematization of the process of cultural heritage is my foundation of this essay. My starting point is that the Royal library make a choice when they collect material to be a cultural heritage and the memories gathered for future generations. I used organizational theory to find answer to how the collection been gathered through studies of the organizations interaction with the members of the organization, the process in the organizations, like goals and policy, and the organizations interaction with other organizations. I used case-study as my method. I interviewed most of the chiefs who were in charge of the unit during the period 1958-2008 and worked through journals of acquisition, annual reports, letters of regulation, exchange of letters and other in-house material. My results are that the acquisition of photography follows the Royal library's acquisition of picture at large. The culture heritage that the library collect for future generations is based on the content rather than the form of the material. This aspect was founded early in the creation of the library and has kept its status as a guiding line ever since. The main categories of collection are based on the motif of the photography and are the following; portrait, topography and events. Events is a new category but a sequel of an old category, historical wall chart. The material that the photographies are made of has varied but the majority have been photographies on paper. Gifts and purchases have been the most common ways for the library to collect photographies. Gifts have been treated differently through the years, from the beginning all gifts were received and the library asked actively for special gifts, later the library decided whether or not they should accept a gift. The policy from both the library and from the government have been vague, but lately they have been working on a new and more detailed policy from 2008.

The focal point of this study emanates from both personal observations formed in public library branch work and questions raised in the subject literature to the effect that tension appears to exist between the wants of the majority of users and the perception of the dominant goals of the public library by their staff, resulting in differing views as to the book selection policy of this institution. Book selection policies have been taken to reflect the attitudes of library staff towards users' wants in terms of their adherence to the tenets of Anglo-American public library objectives.

"Dyslexia is best described as a specific difficulty in learning, in one or more of reading, spelling and written language which may be accompanied by difficulty in number work, short term memory, sequencing auditory and/or visual perception, and motor skills." (British Dyslexia Association) This thesis aims to investigate the extent to which public libraries attempt to meet the needs of the dyslexic community. Libraries are key resource centres for reading and accessing the written language and should aim to meet the needs of their various user communities. Libraries should, therefore, be in the forefront in assisting users in overcoming this disability. Although much is written on the subject of dyslexia and most libraries have descriptive material on the subject, public libraries do not appear particularly proactive in providing material for use by dyslexic individuals. There is a tendency for dyslexia to be seen primarily as an educational issue. However, iflibraries are to continue to have a role in self improvement, literacy and life long learning, they should be addressing areas such as dyslexia. A survey of the literature revealed that little has been written in the professional literature about public library resource provision for dyslexic users. A questionnaire was sent 152 Public Library authorities in the United Kingdom (excluding Scotland) to ascertain the range of services and initiatives offered to people with dyslexia. The results indicate that a modest number of authorities have dedicated collections for people with dyslexia as well as material on the subject aimed towards parents, teachers and carers. The findings suggest that although interest in the potential role of libraries in serving the needs of the dyslexic community is high, relatively little is being done to address the issue in a structured way. Library authorities with dedicated collections for people with dyslexia have been investigated as comparative case studies covering themes such as composition and funding of collections, involvement with other agencies, methods of communication, location and lessons learned. Other case studies explore user needs and actions undertaken by a specialist resource centre. Supporting studies include a survey of resources available from specialist publishers. The thesis concludes witl a summary of findings ancLrecommendations for public libraries on the way ahead in terms of best practice to meet. the needs of dyslexic individuals.

The survey of literature was done on the literature from the United States of America (USA), from the United Kingdom (UK) and also from limited South African resource. The overseas literature was related to the situation in South Africa. The empirical investigation was confined to the academic libraries in the Western Cape region of South Africa. For the empirical investigation a mail questionnaire was constructed and sent to respondents in order to determine whether information technology was indeed affecting the skills of cataloguers in the academic libraries. 'The analysis of data obtained from the results of the questionnaire indicated that there was no sign of a negative influence in the skills levels of cataloguers in Western Cape Africa. Indeed, it seemed was apparent from the analysis of data that cataloguers find information technology to be a positive influence on their skills and on enhancing their status.

Library and information services in corporations, schools, universities, and communities capture information about their users, circulation history, resources in the collection, and search patterns (Koenig, 1985). Unfortunately, few libraries have taken advantage of these data as a way to improve customer service, manage acquisition budgets, or influence strategic decision-making about uses of information in their organizations. In this chapter, we present a global view of the data generated in libraries and the variety of decisions that those data can inform. We describe ways in which library and information managers can use data mining in their libraries, i.e. bibliomining, to understand patterns of behavior among library users and staff members and patterns of information resource use throughout the institution. The chapter examines data sources and possible applications of data mining techniques and explores the legal and ethical implications of data mining in libraries.

This study examines the current situation of training provided to journalists by news librarians in the United States and Australia. The study examines the factors affecting the provision of training and the potential for information literacy instruction to comprise most of the training provided. The definition of information literacy was explored in the context of journalists and news organisations. The study questions the adaptability of the concept to a workplace environment, where organisational and individual development is important. The results of a self-administered questionnaire are presented. Respondents indicated that news librarians are very willing to plan and conduct training, a clear majority agreeing that they should train journalists to search for their own information. Respondents also expressed a need for more training themselves with regard to the skills needed to deliver instruction. The results also found that training is at an early stage in news libraries, with few hours available for planning and conducting training, and mixed success with different training methodologies. A model is suggested as a method of selecting information literacy competencies for individual journalists. The model describes the relationships between individual, organisation, and occupation determined competencies. The study also discusses the implications of the lack of workplace training for journalists, which has impacted upon news libraries' ability to introduce training services. News librarians are providing training, and are pro-active in providing services and information to journalists, but managers do not yet recognise this as a major role for librarians in news organisations.Information literacy instruction needs to become an organisational goal in order to succeed. The difficulties of assessing and evaluating information literacy instruction in the workplace are outlined. The need for measurable outcomes and preevaluation in training are emphasised. Open access publishing is an initiative that aims to provide universal, unrestricted free access to full-text scholarly materials via the Internet. This presents a radically different approach to the dissemination of research articles that has traditionally been controlled by the publishing enterprise that regulates access by means of subscriptions and licences fees levied on users, predominantly academic libraries. In presenting the case for open access publishing, the thesis explored the contemporary research environment, changing modes of knowledge production, the problems associated with the existing academic journal system, and the subsequent growth of the open access movement as an intervention to reclaim scientific communication. It highlighted the ways in which open access better answers the requirements of researchers, funders, governments, and society more broadly.

Maclean, Anne M. "The acquisition of literary papers in Canada". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26050.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
During the past thirty years Canadian literature has developed at a remarkable rate, with the result that many Canadian writers now enjoy national and international recognition. The personal papers of these writers have undergone a corresponding increase in their research and monetary value. Literary papers have therefore become highly attractive to archival repositories and libraries, many of which compete to acquire these papers through sales or donations. Open-market competition may be advantageous to authors because it allows them to sell their papers to the highest bidder, but it is harmful to archivists because it creates animosity within the archival community, inflates prices and causes collections to be split. This clash of interests between authors and archivists, and among archivists themselves, must be resolved if literary papers are to be preserved and administered properly. A questionnaire was sent to 29 Canadian repositories to determine the ways in which archivists deal with the complex issues associated with acquiring literary papers: acquisition policies; acquisition budgets; the suitability of certain types of institutions to acquire literary papers; copyright/literary rights; tax credits; monetary appraisal; and automation. Results from this survey indicate that an increasing number of archival institutions now recognize the need for developing systematic collections policies in order to reduce competition and encourage cooperation among archivists. However, the majority of institutions in Canada still do not have any formal written policies for acquiring literary papers and have no plans to develop such policies in the near future. It will be some time, therefore, before a complete cooperative network among archivists in Canada becomes a reality. Diverse types of institutions acquire literary papers; university archives and special collections, provincial archives, the National Archives and National Library of Canada, and smaller thematic archives are all involved in this type of acquisition. The survey sought respondents' opinions on this question: can or should the acquisition of literary papers be limited to certain types of institutions? Judging from the responses, the answer is a qualified no. Universities are a logical repository for authors' papers because literary research is largely an academic activity, but it is not possible to prevent other types of institutions from acquiring in this area through laws or regulations. Donor preferences play a critical role; ultimately it is the author or his executors who have the last word on where the author's papers are deposited. The author-archivist relationship lies at the heart of this issue. The onus is on the archivist to educate authors on the nature and function of archives and the legal implications of acquisition. Archivists can also educate themselves regarding authors' economic concerns and the literary activities which produce their records; such understanding will help to resolve the conflicts between authors and archivists and improve acquisition negotiations. Finally, archivists need to develop more systematic written acquisitions policies for literary papers in order to reduce competition and ensure the continued preservation of this important cultural resource.

The Special Collections of the Cadbury Research Library at the University of Birmingham hold seven early Qur’ānic pieces on parchment and papyrus dating from the seventh century. Alphonse Mingana purchased them from the antiquarian dealer von Scherling in 1936. Through investigation of the private correspondence of Mingana and archival documents, this research provides new information about the origin and history of the fragments, whose reception has been influenced by the European cultural context at the beginning of the twentieth century, in contrast with the public image proposed in catalogues, official documents and previous studies. Furthermore, this research is an attempt to initiate an alternative perspective in analysing and editing the physical objects and texts of early Qur’ānic manuscripts by applying digital philology, thus using XML-encoded expressions to transcribe all of the richness of manuscripts in reconstructing the history of their transmission. This perspective interprets the process of the making of the manuscript text and the context in which the manuscript was written, thus editing its mobile and multi-layered text, differently from previous examples of the edition of early Qur’ānic manuscripts.

The aim of this study is to investigate how employees at the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU) and librarians at SGU and Uppsala university library (UUB) experience challenges and changes in the information provision for geologists at SGU after an organizational change of the library function at the survey. After the closure of the library at SGU in 2015 the survey buys some of their needed library service from UUB, while most of the SGU library collections are left at the survey. To investigate the experiences I conducted interviews with current and former geologists and former librarians at SGU and a librarian at UUB. I also investigated some key documents to provide a framework to the interviewee’s experiences, to compare this with the goals of the coordination between SGU and UUB, and to try and shed light on the role of the library within the survey. The study was based on a constructivist point of view where the interviewee’s experiences of the changes is in focus, giving a deeper understanding of their information needs and how they have been affected by the changes of the library function. I have looked at the changes in information provision for the employees at SGU as a result of changes in SGU’s library activities, that is, changes in the organization of SGU. The results were therefore analyzed using a combination of organizational theories on public administration and business concept approaches, which is motivated by how public administration has changed in recent decades. The results show that geologists at SGU rely heavily on old publications, grey literature and publications about Swedish conditions. This is opposed to what UUB offers in terms of ”hot science” and international literature to meet the needs of the researchers and students at Uppsala university. Also, since UUB only took over a small part of the collections from the SGU library as part of the agreement, the SGU employees have a significant need for help obtaining literature that is left at the former SGU library. As a result of the changes in information provision, the interviewed geologists at SGU feel that the closure of the library at SGU has had a negative impact on their work performance. Because of this they also feel that there is a contradiction between the regulation of the survey, which states that the main focus for SGU is to collect, manage and disseminate information, and the decision to close the library. The conclusions are that although the libraries at SGU and UUB both offer literature in the field of geology there are big differences in the kind of geological literature that the users need and what the different libraries can or could offer. In a larger perspective, this study can contribute to a deeper understanding of the role of special libraries and what can happen to the information provision when a library closes. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

The developed countries are_moving swiftly and steadily towards electronic information handling and exchange. The speed of this progress needs to be matched in Higher Education libraries in the Arab countries to cope with the advancement of research and scientific activity. There are hundreds of academic libraries in Arab countries with an enormous wealth of library collections and a rapid growth of potential library users. This study aims to investigate the main factors involved in the development of IT, Arabisation, cooperation and telematics, in the AC Higher Education libraries with special reference to Kuwait. Kuwait has suffered severely owing to the Iraqi invasion in August 1990. Most of its Higher Education libraries are in the process of being rebuilt. Therefore, this study comes at a suitable time to analyse the requirements for the implementation of IT at this stage. critical literature review has been carried out to examine the three main aspects namely,, IT, Arabisation, cooperation and telematics. A questionnaire survey was conducted inselected university libraries in AC. A field work study and a comprehensive survey including questionnaires, interviews and observations, were conducted in the Higher Education libraries in Kuwait specif icallY. This included a detailed study of user opinions, regarding IT, Arabised library system and cooperation and telematics The study shows that university libraries in AC are still at an early stage in the development of IT, Arabisation and cooperation and telematics and most of the progress in this field is to be found in certain GCC countries. Although KU and PAAET are the only two Higher Educational institutes in Kuwait their libraries lack IT, Arabisation and cooperation and telematics. Library users are dissatisfied with the current traditional library system and services being used and offered in these libraries. Both librarians and library users, although they have limited IT backgrounds, have high expectations and positive attitudes to the importance of -the above IT facilities for improving their library services. The study identifies the main critical issues affecting IT, Arabisation and cooperation and telematics in Kuwait Higher Education libraries and explores possible solutions and practical recommendations. This study also considers whether the results of the Kuwait study could be generalised to apply to other similar Arab countries

The present study attempted to measure the overlap of tasks being performed by Librarians Class One and Library Technicians Grades Two and Three in special libraries located in Commonwealth Government Departments and Statutory Authorities in the ACT. Overlap was also measured between the two groups in libraries with six or more staff, since size of library could have affected the results; and between graduates (those employees with university or college of advanced education degrees or graduate diplomas in library and information science), and nongraduates (those without such qualifications). To measure the overlap, a task list questionnaire was devised based on task lists utilised in other research studies or which had been the outcome of professional workshops. Work level guidelines and position classification standards developed by pertinent Australian employing authorities and the Library Association of Australia were also used. Results suggested that there may be considerable overlap in work being performed by Librarians Class One and Library Technicians Grades Two and Three in the nominated libraries. Of the eight functional areas of library work into which the task list questionnaire was divided, only two areas, Reference, and Current Awareness and User Services, resulted in proportions of the groups tested being assigned the tasks in significantly different proportions. For the six other functional areas, representing 125 of the 160 tasks Librarians Class One and Library Technicians Grades Two and Three performed the same tasks in similar proportions. Testing for size of library and qualifications of respondents made very little difference to these results. Conclusions drawn from the present study are limited because the questionnaire ignored the level of importance and the time occupied in completing these tasks. Other constraints occurred in relation to conclusions which could be made. The questionnaire methodology as utilised by the present study is more likely to evoke responses to what is there; and it does not identify what should be done or how well tasks are performed. The study is limited to special libraries within Commonwealth Government Departments and Statutory Authorities and is confined to three levels of staff only, Librarians Class One and Library Technicians Grades Two and Three. Despite these limitations, it seems clear that the levels of staff included in the present study are often assigned tasks on the basis of what tasks have to be done, rather than with regard to matching level of task to level of position within the boundaries of the work level guidelines; and this situation is also true of the larger libraries with six or more staff. These results have implications for those involved in educating professional librarians and library technicians, for the interpretation given by the profession to the meaning of professionalism and for staff relations between librarians and library technicians. Debate by the profession concerning the roles of librarians and library technicians is an issue demanding urgent attention.

The purpose of this thesis is to compare international ideal competencies for Special Collections librarianship to the possibility to acquire these competencies as a student of library education or as a professional librarian with the care of special collections in a public library in Sweden today. The questions posed are: How are international ideal competencies concerning special collections looked upon in Swedish public libraries? How can students or professional librarians today acquire competences necessary for the work at hand in special collections? Suggested in this thesis is to emphasize the importance of understanding that handling special collections demands other skills and belongs to other practices than ordinary work in a public library. The major discrepancy with international ideal competencies consists in the lack of ways for education in the field of special collections for both students and professional librarians in Sweden today.

Bibliography: leaves 252-256.
The Royal Alexandrian Library (RAL) is considered by modern scholarship to represent the epitome of the development of ancient librarianship. Its extensive holdings imply the application of modern organizational procedures such as collection development, information retrieval and promotion of use - terms identifiable as elements embodied in the conceptual framework of librarianship (for the purposes of this study the latter two concepts - information retrieval and promotion of use - are combined into the simplified general concept of "collection accessibility"). The RAL therefore constitutes a key development phase in the evolution of modern librarianship. However, scholars have disputed the origins of the RAL and Mouseion or university it was attached to. The socalled "Greek thesis" emphasizes the purely Greek origins of both the Mouseion and the RAL. Conversely, the "Ptolemaic thesis", while acknowledging the Greek origins of the Mouseion, argues that the RAL (as an independent institution distinguishable from the Mouseion proper) is derived from Middle Eastern institutions. This study traces the origins of the RAL from the textual collections of the early Mediterranean and Middle Eastern civilizations, through the period of Greek and the subsequent Hellenistic cultural dominance - culminating in the legacy of Hellenistic librarianship as inherited by the Roman Republic, since the newly emerging Roman empire was to exert a deciding influence upon the historical development of the RAL. Within these civilizations and regions a brief overview is undertaken to gauge the extent of literacy and literary output prevalent in each as well as a general assessment of librarianship and library practices. The major and most noteworthy archival and book collections are then analysed according to the organizational procedures identified in the outlined conceptual framework of librarianship. For this purpose sufficient information has been obtained from archaeological evidence and primary and secondary sources to allow for the analysis of forty-three libraries throughout the ancient world. In this way predominantly Middle Eastern as well as Greek elements have been identified as contributing to the creation, organization and functioning of the RAL.

This study began with an interest in corporate libraries and a genuine curiosity in the information preferences and resources valued by executive leaders at JET Aircraft Co. Executive information preferences and the downward trend in special libraries initiated the investigation of information seeking among executive leaders and yielded the inquiry: What resources do JET Aircraft Co. executives value when they need information? Employing an ethnographic approach, this study investigated what JET Aircraft Co. executives know about information resources, what they believe about information resources, and how they act when they require information. While JET Aircraft Co. maintained a special corporate library called the Company Research Library (CRL), the purpose of this study was to determine what resources were of value to executives at JET Aircraft Co., understanding that the CRL may or may not be a resource executives’ value. As a byproduct, this study also sought to establish executive information preferences and perceptions of the CRL. Information seeking at the executive level, studied through an ethnographic lens, provided insight into how executives at JET Aircraft Co. work and what they prefer, and it established a baseline for the Company Research Library’s position among the resources valued by executives.

Thesis (MMus (Music))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
In the absence of a state-sponsored South African archive that focuses on collecting, ordering, cataloguing and preserving special music collections for research, the Documentation Centre for Music (DOMUS) was established in 2005 as a research project at the University of Stellenbosch. Music research in South Africa is often impeded by inaccessibility of materials, staff shortages at archives and libraries, financial constraints and time-consuming ordering and cataloguing processes. Additionally there is, locally, restricted knowledge of the existence, location and status of relevant primary sources. Accessibility clearly depends on knowing of the existence of materials, as well as the extent to which collections have been ordered and catalogued. An overview of repositories such as the Nasionale Afrikaanse Letterkundige Museum and Navorsingsentrum (NALN), the now defunct National Documentation Centre for Music and the International Library of African Music (ILAM) paints a troubling picture of archival neglect and disintegration. Apart from ILAM, which has a very specific collecting and research focus, this trend was one that ostensibly started in the 1980s and is still continuing. It could be ascribed to a lack of planning and forward thinking under the previous political dispensation, aggravated by policies of transformation and restructuring in the current one. Existing sources supporting research on primary materials are dated and not discipline-specific. Thus this study aims to address issues of inaccessibility of primary music materials by creating a comprehensive and ongoing national electronic database of special music collections in South Africa. It is hoped that this will help to alert researchers to the existence and status of special music collections housed at various levels of South African academic and civil society.

Curriculum development involves considerations about curriculum relevance. Thus it is necessary that the curriculum should identify with the needs of the graduate and with professional practice. This requirement shoNAt-hsa t curriculum relevance is not fixed, a view that is consistent with a dynamic, situational approach to curriculum development. The basic categories which define librarianship curriculum development are library activities, theory, innovation, teaching and learning, employers, students. lecturers. These are influential factors in curriculum relevance. Variables in curriculum content such as theory and practice affect curriculum relevance. Librarianship curriculum development should aim at relevance by integrating academic study and practice. Hence, the goal of study towards librarianship education must be focused on the activities performed in library and information services. The need for innovation in library and information services means that novel viewpoints and solutions must be practical. For example, this requirement indicates that curriculum development must take into consideration leamt attributes which are aerieral and transferable in a changing world. This is in view of the employers' requirement that graduates should have critical intellectual ability and the capability to learn rather than their just immediate attributes, skills and knowledge. With teaching and leaming there is abundant rationale for the development of more effective delivery systems than traditional lecturing. If outcome-based learning is valued, individualised, self-directed learning is a prerequisite. The practices of the task-based curriculum, with its focus on student learning and on the development of transferable skills more closely approximate the ideal approaches to librarianship education. The teaching of transferable skills is more likely to define the conditions under which critical reasoning can develop. It has an advantage over the students' abilities to learn to function in the profession outside the university and for continuous development. In this respect task-based education has much wider implications than that of simply providing students with skills. Professional practice does not always fit with the curriculum that is developed by the experts. The expert-developed curriculum also poses a problem for those who interpret it, learn it and receive the products. Thus, a strong joint partnership in which the library and the library school are both recognised in curriculum development is essential if the profession is to fulfil effectively its unique role in society.

The main aims of the thesis are to research the whole libraries service in Excutive Yuan related economic libraries and understand readers'' character and some information about them. The research will investigate how the whole employees in Excutive Yuan related economic departments use the libraries and we would like to know how much they feel satisfied with library service from the study at the same time. By analyzing satisfaction degree of service from the readers, the ideas can make reference to improve library service , promote the efficiency and the quality of library service and build the structure of evaluation system of library service. The results of the study is that the Excutive Yuan related economic libraries are small special ones. Their library space, their librarians, their collections, their budget, and their facilities seem deficient. So one of the most important jobs in the future is how to overcome these difficulties----government system, their conception, and their manner for example. In fact, what we must do now is to develop better managing policies of libraries in order to promote library service. The main reading aims for the employees in the Excutive Yuna related economy departments are to get some information which has something to do with their jobs. The information that they read is about Chinese publications. The sources of information are from newspapers, periodical publications , Internet, academic thesis, minutes, and personal files. The important ways which they get information are from Internet firstly. Secondly , they borrow information or data from the related other departments. Thirdly, they themselves get it in bookstores ; fourth, they get it from their colleagues in the same department ; fifth, they get it in their own library. We know the library is the last choice which they get information. And we want to know how the users use the library from the research. They read current periodical publications, library collections, newspapers most often. Sometimes they will borrow periodical publications and copy something that they need. As regards satisfaction degree of library service, what the employees are satisfied with in order are the hard facilities of library surroundings, librarians, librarian manner, the process which they borrow books, collections, the ways of library service and library education, and consulting information. However the users* satisfaction degree for library service are different with the users* age, education, and the years that the employees work

University Libraries, categorized as research libraries, are the heart of universities. The Special Collections are important assets of these libraries, and how to protect them from deteriorations requires our attention. In Taiwan, there has been not research on special collection preservation in university libraries. This thesis involves field trip in university libraries’ special collection department, literature review on papers in this topic and interviews with librarians and conservators. The goal is to provide a reference resource for the librarians to consult with while choosing suitable solution for special collection preservation and to understand the difficulties in special collection preservation. As a result, the cultural development of the school and the community can be reflected by preserving and promoting the unique resources of the university. Data in this thesis are collected from interviews and observation. After generalizing these data, this thesis focus on three aspects: 1. The management status of special collections in university libraries. 2. Security measures on special collections. 3. Preservation measures on special collections. 4. The preservation and management difficulties in special collections. The finding of this thesis shows the following suggestions: 1. Set up special collections preventive conservation and security maintenance policy, and organize alliance to preserve special collections; 2. Promote special collections, and highlight the importance to increase the sense of identity of people related with school. 3. Promote and value the notions of preservation and preventive conservation.

This thesis examines the impacts of new technology on university library administration as reflected in a case study. The institution chosen for the study is the University of Tasmania Library, which has recently adopted a totally integrated automated library system based on the Library's own mini-computer. The opening chapter introduces the topic, and puts forward five propositions. These include propositions about the use of new technology to reinforce the organization's niche within the parent institution; the role of technology in environmental turbulence and uncertainty; the effects of new technology on routineness, standardization, formalization and flexibility; the structural impacts of new technology; and the human and social impacts upon organization members. The chapter continues with a review of relevant literature, and concludes with a description of the methodology employed. Subsequent chapters consider the University Library in the light of each of the propositions. Two chapters are devoted to the background and particular circumstances of the organization - one on its history, nature and technology, and another on its task environment. The nature of the technology employed by the University Library is then examined in more detail in an attempt to classify it. Perrow's scale of routineness is chosen as a suitable classification scheme, and the effects of automation on the level of routineness of the organization's technology are considered. A tendency towards increased routineness, standardization and formalization is observed, but there is little corresponding loss of flexibility. Rather, new opportunities for creativity and flexible services are noted. Structural impacts of the introduction of automated systems are examined. While the formal structure remains virtually unchanged, there are changes occurring in the informal organization. The results of a survey of organization members indicate that the human impacts of automation generally have been minor, although a small group of employees experiencing loss of job satisfaction and deteriorating social relationships is identified. Finally, the impacts observed in the case study are considered in the context of the particular circumstances of the University of Tasmania Library - its history, nature, technology, environment and management, as described in the earlier chapters - and concludes that these are all contributing factors to the nature of the impacts of the introduction of new automated systems in the particular organization.

Through the development of special collections, university libraries may be able to introduce certain characteristics, highlights and uniqueness into their holdings. This thesis attempts to investigate the development of special collections in Taiwan’s university libraries, and examines special collections that have already been established. This is done by recording the insights and development processes of some libraries that have experiences in developing special collections, including their development motivation, the establishment process , current status, factors affecting development, possible effects, and collection management, use and promotion. This thesis adopts the qualitative research approach, and the data were collected through conducting semi-structured in-depth interviews and questionnaires. Twenty eight libraries participated in the questionnaire survey, and twenty five librarians from sixteen of the university libraries were interviewed in depth. The findings of this thesis are as follows: (1) The three major reasons that contribute to the development of special collections in university libraries are: the inheritance of existing resources, superiors’ instructions and project funds. (2) In many libraries, the collection development policies include special collections development. The acquisition methods for special collections are similar to those of general collections, including the suggestions of faculty members and acquisition through exchange and gifts. (3) The three most common development types of special collections are subject disciplines, material formats and historical periods. (4) According to literature review and respondents from interviews and questionnaires, the three major factors that influence the development of special collections are library space, budgets and staff. IV (5) According to the respondents, the biggest incentives for the development of special collections include enhancing the quality and quantity of the collection, and helping answer more in-depth information demands. However it may also lead to the neglect of the development of general collections. (6) There are no standard rules for special collections management in staff, display and classification in university libraries. Each library uses a different management style, and the same library may have a number of management styles. Usually, libraries use the same management rules for special collections and general collections, although the special collections are kept together on display and are marked by special codes. (7) Special collections are almost always limited to library use only. And due to the concept of resource sharing, most university libraries provide equal access to their special collections for both internal and external patrons. However, some special collections are accessed in different ways because of user identification or the characteristics of collections. (8) Using library websites is the most common way to promote special collections. Sometimes libraries also plan promotional activities to create more diversity in their marketing.
