Texto completo da fonteThe investigation was undertaken to establish, in the first place, whether it is correct to assume that university library managers in South Africa do understand the main tenets of marketing. Secondly, the investigation was undertaken to determine whether these librarians actually do implement some or all of the principles of marketing in the management of their libraries. The study was carried out in two parts: a literature survey and an empirical investigation. The investigation was confined to university libraries in South Africa. The literature survey of the relevant marketing literature had a twofold purpose. In the first place, the marketing of libraries could only be properly appreciated within the context of understanding what is meant by marketing. Secondly, it was an underlying assumption of the investigation that in order to determine whether the management of South African university libraries did understand and apply the principles of marketing, the questions posed to them in the survey would of necessity have to reflect the principles, concepts, terminology and techniques of marketing, as established in the literature survey. The survey of marketing literature therefore endeavoured to establish clearly the main tenets of marketing and the techniques of marketing planning, the broadened marketing concept which has extended marketing to non-profit organizations, and, the significance of the interactive relationship of services marketing. A survey of the relevant literature of librarianship was undertaken to gain an insight into how marketing was perceived by the Anglo-American library world. It was against this broader background of the literature of librarianship that the South African experience was considered. As part of the empirical investigation a questionnaire was constructed and mailed to the respondents in order to determine whether the principles of marketing are understood and implemented by university libraries in South Africa. The analysis of the data obtained from the questionnaire indicated that the management of South African university libraries have a general understanding of the principles of marketing, although at present only a small minority have an in-depth knowledge of it. From the analysis of the data it is also apparent that South African university library managers to a greater or lesser extent do carry out some of the main activities of marketing, although, for the present, they do not necessarily consider that they are implementing formal marketing planning in their libraries. Only a small minority of university libraries are actually engaged in some formal marketing activities.

In recent years it has been acknowledged that the practice of knowledge management can play an important role to ensure an organisation’s competitive edge within an industry. This study focuses on knowledge sharing practices in university libraries with special reference to the Unisa Library. The aim of the research project was therefore to establish whether the Unisa Library is receptive to knowledge sharing practices, whether there is a need for knowledge management and more specifically for a knowledge sharing strategy. Thus the objective was to establish the extent to which knowledge sharing practices occur among professional library staff, albeit unknowingly, in their daily activities. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. A questionnaire was delivered in person to professional librarians while interviews were conducted with managers from the various directorates of the library. The questions explored the knowledge sharing practices, including challenges within the library. They were based on internationally accepted knowledge management themes which include the role of leadership, organisational structure, organisational culture, technology, processes in enabling the effective practice of knowledge management.

Texto completo da fonteThe use and design of library spaces in higher education is a theme that has come to the forefront of user needs in the past few years. Academic libraries are redesigning their spaces to accommodate the 21st century user. The 21st century user is often labeled as Generation Y and requires a different set of knowledge and skills. In today’s knowledge economy, core skills include creativity, problem solving and collaboration. Libraries are creating space to accommodate the needs of these new users. They are developing group work areas, relaxation or pause areas, technology hubs and discussion rooms. This study has investigated how to redesign academic libraries, using Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) Cape Town branch as a pilot study. The researcher used the concept of library "as place" or "3ʳᵈ place" as a theory. The framework interrogated the ten qualities of a good library space. The researcher used a mixed method research design to conduct this study. A questionnaire of which multiple copies were made, interviews and internal statistics were used to gather data. The results of the study reflected that the library is functional, can be adapted, the space is accessible and varied, it is conducive to motivating and inspiring people, it does promote interactivity between users and library services, and is environmentally suitable, flexible and has a wow factor. All of these characteristics conform to McDonald’s ten qualities of a good library space.

Texto completo da fonteMy master’s thesis is a study of acquisition of photographies during 1958-2008. The questions I proceed from is what patterns lies behind the Royal library's acquisition of photography and how the process of acquisition looks like. The theoretical base which I lean on consists partly of a problematization of the process of cultural heritage and partly of organizational theory. The problematization of the process of cultural heritage is my foundation of this essay. My starting point is that the Royal library make a choice when they collect material to be a cultural heritage and the memories gathered for future generations. I used organizational theory to find answer to how the collection been gathered through studies of the organizations interaction with the members of the organization, the process in the organizations, like goals and policy, and the organizations interaction with other organizations. I used case-study as my method. I interviewed most of the chiefs who were in charge of the unit during the period 1958-2008 and worked through journals of acquisition, annual reports, letters of regulation, exchange of letters and other in-house material. My results are that the acquisition of photography follows the Royal library's acquisition of picture at large. The culture heritage that the library collect for future generations is based on the content rather than the form of the material. This aspect was founded early in the creation of the library and has kept its status as a guiding line ever since. The main categories of collection are based on the motif of the photography and are the following; portrait, topography and events. Events is a new category but a sequel of an old category, historical wall chart. The material that the photographies are made of has varied but the majority have been photographies on paper. Gifts and purchases have been the most common ways for the library to collect photographies. Gifts have been treated differently through the years, from the beginning all gifts were received and the library asked actively for special gifts, later the library decided whether or not they should accept a gift. The policy from both the library and from the government have been vague, but lately they have been working on a new and more detailed policy from 2008.

Book selection policies have been taken to reflect the attitudes of library staff towards users' wants in terms of their adherence to the tenets of Anglo-American public library objectives.

Texto completo da fonteAn investigation was undertaken to establish whether it was possible to assume that information technology has had an influence of the skills levels in the jobs of cataloguers. The research was conducted in two parts: the literature survey and the empirical investigation. The survey of literature was done on the literature from the United States of America (USA), from the United Kingdom (UK) and also from limited South African resource. The overseas literature was related to the situation in South Africa. The empirical investigation was confined to the academic libraries in the Western Cape region of South Africa. For the empirical investigation a mail questionnaire was constructed and sent to respondents in order to determine whether information technology was indeed affecting the skills of cataloguers in the academic libraries. 'The analysis of data obtained from the results of the questionnaire indicated that there was no sign of a negative influence in the skills levels of cataloguers in Western Cape Africa. Indeed, it seemed was apparent from the analysis of data that cataloguers find information technology to be a positive influence on their skills and on enhancing their status.

Texto completo da fonteOpen access publishing is an initiative that aims to provide universal, unrestricted free access to full-text scholarly materials via the Internet. This presents a radically different approach to the dissemination of research articles that has traditionally been controlled by the publishing enterprise that regulates access by means of subscriptions and licences fees levied on users, predominantly academic libraries. In presenting the case for open access publishing, the thesis explored the contemporary research environment, changing modes of knowledge production, the problems associated with the existing academic journal system, and the subsequent growth of the open access movement as an intervention to reclaim scientific communication. It highlighted the ways in which open access better answers the requirements of researchers, funders, governments, and society more broadly.

Texto completo da fonteThe Royal Alexandrian Library (RAL) is considered by modern scholarship to represent the epitome of the development of ancient librarianship. Its extensive holdings imply the application of modern organizational procedures such as collection development, information retrieval and promotion of use - terms identifiable as elements embodied in the conceptual framework of librarianship (for the purposes of this study the latter two concepts - information retrieval and promotion of use - are combined into the simplified general concept of "collection accessibility"). The RAL therefore constitutes a key development phase in the evolution of modern librarianship. However, scholars have disputed the origins of the RAL and Mouseion or university it was attached to. The socalled "Greek thesis" emphasizes the purely Greek origins of both the Mouseion and the RAL. Conversely, the "Ptolemaic thesis", while acknowledging the Greek origins of the Mouseion, argues that the RAL (as an independent institution distinguishable from the Mouseion proper) is derived from Middle Eastern institutions. This study traces the origins of the RAL from the textual collections of the early Mediterranean and Middle Eastern civilizations, through the period of Greek and the subsequent Hellenistic cultural dominance - culminating in the legacy of Hellenistic librarianship as inherited by the Roman Republic, since the newly emerging Roman empire was to exert a deciding influence upon the historical development of the RAL. Within these civilizations and regions a brief overview is undertaken to gauge the extent of literacy and literary output prevalent in each as well as a general assessment of librarianship and library practices. The major and most noteworthy archival and book collections are then analysed according to the organizational procedures identified in the outlined conceptual framework of librarianship. For this purpose sufficient information has been obtained from archaeological evidence and primary and secondary sources to allow for the analysis of forty-three libraries throughout the ancient world. In this way predominantly Middle Eastern as well as Greek elements have been identified as contributing to the creation, organization and functioning of the RAL.

Texto completo da fonteIn the absence of a state-sponsored South African archive that focuses on collecting, ordering, cataloguing and preserving special music collections for research, the Documentation Centre for Music (DOMUS) was established in 2005 as a research project at the University of Stellenbosch. Music research in South Africa is often impeded by inaccessibility of materials, staff shortages at archives and libraries, financial constraints and time-consuming ordering and cataloguing processes. Additionally there is, locally, restricted knowledge of the existence, location and status of relevant primary sources. Accessibility clearly depends on knowing of the existence of materials, as well as the extent to which collections have been ordered and catalogued. An overview of repositories such as the Nasionale Afrikaanse Letterkundige Museum and Navorsingsentrum (NALN), the now defunct National Documentation Centre for Music and the International Library of African Music (ILAM) paints a troubling picture of archival neglect and disintegration. Apart from ILAM, which has a very specific collecting and research focus, this trend was one that ostensibly started in the 1980s and is still continuing. It could be ascribed to a lack of planning and forward thinking under the previous political dispensation, aggravated by policies of transformation and restructuring in the current one. Existing sources supporting research on primary materials are dated and not discipline-specific. Thus this study aims to address issues of inaccessibility of primary music materials by creating a comprehensive and ongoing national electronic database of special music collections in South Africa. It is hoped that this will help to alert researchers to the existence and status of special music collections housed at various levels of South African academic and civil society.

The main aims of the thesis are to research the whole libraries service in Excutive Yuan related economic libraries and understand readers'' character and some information about them. The research will investigate how the whole employees in Excutive Yuan related economic departments use the libraries and we would like to know how much they feel satisfied with library service from the study at the same time. By analyzing satisfaction degree of service from the readers, the ideas can make reference to improve library service , promote the efficiency and the quality of library service and build the structure of evaluation system of library service. The results of the study is that the Excutive Yuan related economic libraries are small special ones. Their library space, their librarians, their collections, their budget, and their facilities seem deficient. So one of the most important jobs in the future is how to overcome these difficulties----government system, their conception, and their manner for example. In fact, what we must do now is to develop better managing policies of libraries in order to promote library service. The main reading aims for the employees in the Excutive Yuna related economy departments are to get some information which has something to do with their jobs. The information that they read is about Chinese publications. The sources of information are from newspapers, periodical publications , Internet, academic thesis, minutes, and personal files. The important ways which they get information are from Internet firstly. Secondly , they borrow information or data from the related other departments. Thirdly, they themselves get it in bookstores ; fourth, they get it from their colleagues in the same department ; fifth, they get it in their own library. We know the library is the last choice which they get information. And we want to know how the users use the library from the research. They read current periodical publications, library collections, newspapers most often. Sometimes they will borrow periodical publications and copy something that they need. As regards satisfaction degree of library service, what the employees are satisfied with in order are the hard facilities of library surroundings, librarians, librarian manner, the process which they borrow books, collections, the ways of library service and library education, and consulting information. However the users* satisfaction degree for library service are different with the users* age, education, and the years that the employees work

University Libraries, categorized as research libraries, are the heart of universities. The Special Collections are important assets of these libraries, and how to protect them from deteriorations requires our attention. In Taiwan, there has been not research on special collection preservation in university libraries. This thesis involves field trip in university libraries’ special collection department, literature review on papers in this topic and interviews with librarians and conservators. The goal is to provide a reference resource for the librarians to consult with while choosing suitable solution for special collection preservation and to understand the difficulties in special collection preservation. As a result, the cultural development of the school and the community can be reflected by preserving and promoting the unique resources of the university. Data in this thesis are collected from interviews and observation. After generalizing these data, this thesis focus on three aspects: 1. The management status of special collections in university libraries. 2. Security measures on special collections. 3. Preservation measures on special collections. 4. The preservation and management difficulties in special collections. The finding of this thesis shows the following suggestions: 1. Set up special collections preventive conservation and security maintenance policy, and organize alliance to preserve special collections; 2. Promote special collections, and highlight the importance to increase the sense of identity of people related with school. 3. Promote and value the notions of preservation and preventive conservation.

Through the development of special collections, university libraries may be able to introduce certain characteristics, highlights and uniqueness into their holdings. This thesis attempts to investigate the development of special collections in Taiwan’s university libraries, and examines special collections that have already been established. This is done by recording the insights and development processes of some libraries that have experiences in developing special collections, including their development motivation, the establishment process , current status, factors affecting development, possible effects, and collection management, use and promotion. This thesis adopts the qualitative research approach, and the data were collected through conducting semi-structured in-depth interviews and questionnaires. Twenty eight libraries participated in the questionnaire survey, and twenty five librarians from sixteen of the university libraries were interviewed in depth. The findings of this thesis are as follows: (1) The three major reasons that contribute to the development of special collections in university libraries are: the inheritance of existing resources, superiors’ instructions and project funds. (2) In many libraries, the collection development policies include special collections development. The acquisition methods for special collections are similar to those of general collections, including the suggestions of faculty members and acquisition through exchange and gifts. (3) The three most common development types of special collections are subject disciplines, material formats and historical periods. (4) According to literature review and respondents from interviews and questionnaires, the three major factors that influence the development of special collections are library space, budgets and staff. IV (5) According to the respondents, the biggest incentives for the development of special collections include enhancing the quality and quantity of the collection, and helping answer more in-depth information demands. However it may also lead to the neglect of the development of general collections. (6) There are no standard rules for special collections management in staff, display and classification in university libraries. Each library uses a different management style, and the same library may have a number of management styles. Usually, libraries use the same management rules for special collections and general collections, although the special collections are kept together on display and are marked by special codes. (7) Special collections are almost always limited to library use only. And due to the concept of resource sharing, most university libraries provide equal access to their special collections for both internal and external patrons. However, some special collections are accessed in different ways because of user identification or the characteristics of collections. (8) Using library websites is the most common way to promote special collections. Sometimes libraries also plan promotional activities to create more diversity in their marketing.
