Fielded data from 40 sows together with obtained data from 1999 to 2005 we analysed to determine the performance of sows fed enriched diet from weaning to a service in a commercialflock. The data were on litter size at birth (LTZVT), litter size at weaning (LTZWN), weaning age (WNAGE) forrowing interval (FRINT), purity (PRTY) and reproductive life (PRODLF). Mean value of 9.44(no), 6.04(no), 31.874, 453.58d and 3.65yrs were obtained for LTZBT, LTZWN, WNAGE, FRINT and PRODLF respectively. The influence of parity on sow's performance was analyzed while mortality and sows efficiency of production were determined. Anagonistic relationship existed between production and reproduction traite. Mortality amongst piglets increased with weaning age. Over 80% of sows hold PRINT of less than 157 days, farrowed litters greater than 7 and 55% weaned litter size of over 8. Parity had no influence on sow's performancw. Sow efficiency of production indices showed that sows had 2 farrowing/year, a farrowing rate of 84% and small litter index of less than 17%. The findings of this study have indicated that better performance of sows can be achieved by giving enriched diet (flushing) from weaning to a service rather than the practice of flushing only few days to service

In summer high temperatures are stress for sows mostly. This situation often affects the reproduction physiology in animals strongly. As a result of that the fertility and reproduction performance of sows can be reduced. High environmental temperatures and especially heat accumulation in body of the animals affect the metabolism in high performance sows. That is important in very sensitive phases in reproduction cycle of sows like heat, pregnancy and lactation. Young sows (gilts and primiparous sows) are more sensitive than older sows. This situation demands zoo- and biotechnical activities expecting assistance for reproduction endocrinology in sows. Regarding this aim, the stimulation of cycle with eCG in weaned sows with different age was investigated. Following results were found: The effect of cycle stimulation with 800 IU eCG in weaned sows differ depend on age of sows, season and temperature. Cycle stimulation with eCG in summer (July, August, September) reduces risk of low fertility in sows. In other seasons the positive effect of biotechnical cycle stimulation is not clear generally. Especially in primiparous sows there is a positive effect of biotechnical treatment in summer. In older sows in 3rd to 5th litter the cycle stimulation has no significant positive effect on fertility. In sows with more than 5 litters cycle stimulations are necessary to save a high reproduction performance generally.

The reproductive traits of sows are affected by many factors, so in the practice of work of reproduction farm should take into account the influence of each of the its in order to increase the output of piglets from the breeding stock, especially in industrial pig farms. The safe passage of farrowing has the big influence on the prolificacy of sows, since many piglets die directly during farrowing. Therefore, in modern industrial enterprises that use highly productive hybrid sows it is necessary to constantly monitor the passage of farrowing sows. Researches have been carried out in the reproduction farm of the pig breeding complex on the implementation of the night shift in the technological process at the farrowing site and its influence on the indicators of reproductive traits of sows of different age groups. The results of researches have shown that the implementation of the night shift in the reproduction farm of the industrial pig breeding complex using highly productive hybrid sows is necessary and economically has been justified. The prolificacy of sows of the 1st group was 12,9 piglets, and sows of the 2nd group by 0,6 % more. Per litter 1,25 stillborn piglets have been detected in the 1st experimental group of sows, while in the 2nd group there were by 0,25 piglets less. A total of 803 heads have been received in the 1st experimental group stillborn piglets, in the 2nd group 621 heads have been received or bys 182 heads less. When using the night shift in the 2nd group of sows additionally 182 piglets have been obtained. At the same time, the difference between the cost of additionally saved piglets and the cost of organizing the night shift for the two-week research period was 195,7 thousand rubles.

AbstractThe aim of the study was to analyze infection of sows with endoparasites depending on their physiological phase and length of exploitation, as well as to determine the effects of infection on selected parameters of reproductive performance. 300 fecal samples collected from the same 75 sows in 4 phases of the production cycle (dry sows, low pregnancy, high pregnancy, lactation) were tested in the experiment. Species and gender diversity, prevalence, OPG and EPG were determined in the study. These parameters were compared in terms of the physiological phase and the length of exploitation. Selected parameters of reproductive performance of sows were also examined, which were compared taking into account the length of exploitation and sows infection with individual parasites. The study showed that the entire population was infected with two parasites at all physiological phases: Eimeria spp. (17% prevalence, 2275 OPG) and Ascaris suum (5% prevalence, EPG 79). The presence of parasites from Eimeria genus (prevalence 40%, OPG 2976) in sows exploited for 1 year had a negative effect on some parameters of their reproduction performance. Infected sows, compared to noninfected ones, were characterized by a lower number of live piglets (by 0.21 heads) (p≤0.05), a higher number of stillborn piglets (by 0.21 heads) (p≤0.05), as well as lower daily weight gains of piglets (by 15 g) (p≤0.05), which contributed to their lower weaning body weight (by 0.45 kg) (p≤0.05).

Abstract The study was carried out in seven reproductive herds of pigs. In three of them reproductive disorders were observed. Three herds consisted of 10-50 and four consisted of 120-500 adult sows and they were called small and medium, respectively. Fifty-seven adult sows were randomly selected from herds. Serum samples were tested using the complement fixation test and swabs from both eyes and from the vaginal vestibule were examined using real-time PCR. All serum samples were negative. Infected sows were present in each of the study herds. In total, there were 28 positive samples (53%, 28/48) in real-time PCR in sows with reproductive disorders and 35 (53%, 35/66) in sows selected from herds without problems in reproduction. One isolate proved to be Chlamydophila pecorum, whereas all the remaining were Chamydia suis

One hundred and eighty-seven gilts that conceived at first, second or third estrus after 140 d of age and that had a litter at 21 d post-farrow were fed three gestation energy levels 22.2, 29.2 and 36.2 MJ DE d−1 for four parities to assess the effect of gestation energy level on reproductive performance and longevity. All sows were fed the same lactation diet to appetite twice per day. Gestation energy level did not have a consistent effect on the number of piglets per litter. There was a small linear increase in piglet birth weight as gestation energy level increased. However, piglets from sows fed the medium level of energy were heaviest at 21 d. Weight and backfat thickness of sows tended to change with the level of food intake. Sows that ate more in gestation tended to eat less in lactation. There were significantly fewer sows fed the low gestation energy level completing parities three and four and this was the major factor accounting for fewer total piglets at 21 d post-farrow. Many of the sows not completing the trial on this treatment had 10 mm or less P2 backfat. The major reason for sow removal was due to sows not pregnant at the expected time of farrowing. Estimates were made of feed and energy intake during gestation and lactation consistent with good reproductive performance. Key words: Pigs, reproduction, energy, longevity

Abstract The modern lactating sow is a highly productive female capable of producing large quantities of milk to support large, rapidly growing litters. The associated high energy and nutritional demands are challenging to meet, especially during heat stress, when tissue loss is extensive. Supplemental lipids are efficient energy sources with a high energy density and low heat increment associated with digestion and metabolism. Besides serving as concentrated energy sources, unsaturated lipids are important sources of essential fatty acids (EFA; linoleic acid, C18:2n-6; and α-linolenic acid, C18:3n-3). These EFA are precursors of various prostanoids that are important regulators of reproductive processes. Lactating sows fed diets devoid of supplemental lipids exhibited poor reproduction but was significantly improved by inclusion of only 2% unsaturated lipids. It was shown that lactation diets were deficient in both linoleic and α-linolenic acid and tissue reserves were inadequate in mature sows. A multi-trial meta-analysis showed that more sows were successfully bred and maintained pregnancy when they consumed supplemental linoleic acid. Further, increased linoleic acid intake during lactation progressively reduced the number of sows removed from the herd due to reproductive failure (sows not returning to estrus, returning to estrus after breeding, pregnancy loss). Based on dose-response curves, the near maximum response was achieved when sows consumed a minimum of 125 g/d of linoleic acid and 10 g/d of α-linolenic acid during lactation. Recent studies also demonstrated improved subsequent reproduction with supplemental linoleic and α-linolenic acid during lactation, but not during the post-weaning period. Responses appeared to be related to heavier fetoplacental units, elevated allantoic fluid volume, and higher embryo survival measured on day 30 of gestation in sows supplemented with linoleic acid during lactation and early gestation. Research demonstrated the importance of both EFA in lactating sows and their critical role in improving reproduction, thus resolving seasonal anestrus.

Thirty to forty per cent of sows in Irish herds are culled annually, one third of which are for reproductive problems such as anoestrus, anovulation and small litter size. Causes of reproductive failure include genetic, nutritional, environmental and behavioural factors. Failure to meet the nutritional requirements of sows during lactation and after weaning results in losses of liveweight and body fat (due to mobilization of body reserves) which can subsequently compromise reproductive performance. Although sows normally exhibit oestrus within one week of weaning, Sterning et al. (1990) observed that a large proportion of first parity sows showed a delayed return to oestrus. This results in a longer farrowing interval, fewer litters per sow per year and a reduction in herd output. The effects of malnutrition on reproduction are more severe in first parity than in multiparous sows (Kirkwood and Aherne, 1985). The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of low feed intake during lactation and postweaning on the subsequent reproductive performance of first parity sows.

Feeding high-energy (HED) or high-fat diets during gestation and lactation to pigs may help cover the energy requirements of high-prolific sows but may also adversely affect their reproductive performance. The microalga Arthrospira plantensis (Sp), rich in bioactive compounds, has been described to exert beneficial health effects. The present study investigated the effects of HED and Sp intake during gestation and lactation in pigs. Twenty-four primiparous crossbred sows were fed either a HED or a control diet. Half of the sows per group were supplemented with 20 g/day of Sp. Despite a higher gross energy intake, consuming the HED did not affect the sows’ reproductive and lactational performance but significantly modified the colostrum fatty acid (FA) composition and tended to decrease the number of weaned piglets. The Sp supplementation did not affect the reproduction and lactation traits, but slightly affected the colostrum FA composition. A trend was observed for an interaction of diet and Sp in terms of offspring sex ratio with a 50% lower male-to-female ratio in the HED group compared to all other animals. These findings suggest that an HED and Sp intake hardly influence reproduction in sows. However, the HED modified the colostrum FA composition, whereas the Sp had only fewer effects, which may potentially affect offspring performance.

New biotechnological procedures and the use of hormones in swine breeding are aimed at increasing the number of piglets in the litter. In small herds and groups, selected sows with 16 mammary complexes (tits) can yield up to 32 piglets, or porkers, per year per sow. In order to achieve such reproduction results, special, individual stalls for sow deliveries are used, in addition to biotechnological methods, with a warm core and floor heating, phased diet and clean facilities. The ovulation value in swine is determined by their genetic and paragenetic effects, and it is often provoked and increased with injections and preparations for superovulation. However, the results vary, since any administration of hormone injecions can reduce the reproductive cycle, shorten the duration of estrus, or disrupt the work of ovaries and create cystic follicles. The use of follicle-stimulating hormones in quantities up to 1000 IU per animal for the induction and synchronization of estrus has become customary for sows and gilts, as well as the use of prostaglandins, the use of GnRH for increasing ovulation in swine and increasing the number of follicles >4 mm in diameter in the implementation of new biotechnologies in swine breeding, increases the number of ovulations and fertility in swine. In this way, reproduction is raised to the highest possible level, and artificial insemination of sows has 12 separate rules which enable better and more successful artificial insemination of sows.

Three experiments were conducted on sows. In experiment I, Landrace gilts were fed ad libitum, from 10 weeks of age to puberty, diets containing either 2800 (LE), 3400 (ME) and 3900 (HE) Kcal DE/kg. Age at puberty was delayed in gilts fed LE and ME. Backfat thickness was significantly reduced in LE and ME groups. Puberty onset was more determined by age and backfat thickness than by weight. In experiment II, all gilts that had shown normal heat within 240 days of age, were inseminated on the second estrus and given the same diet as received during their growing period. Feed was restricted to 2.0 kg per day during gestation and was provided ad libitum in lactation. Gilts in LE and ME gained less weight and backfat during gestation than gilts in HE group. Gilts gaining more weight and backfat during gestation, with a resulting higher body weight and backfat thickness at parturition, lost more in lactation. Incidence of anoestrus after weaning was higher in the LE and HE groups. In experiment III, multiparous Landrace-Yorkshire sows from two herds were used. An extended weaning to remating interval and reduced number of piglets weaned was observed in first and second parity sows. Lower reproductive performance in one herd was related to an excessive loss of backfat in lactation and a low backfat level at weaning.

A study was conducted to investigate the effect of supplemental fat from flaxseed (FL) on fatty acid (FA) profile, chemical composition, energy value of colostrum and milk, and litter performance. On day 107 of gestation a total of 59 large white sows were selected, blocked by parity and randomly allotted to one of three diets, 15% flaxseed (FL), 10% fullfat soybean (SB) or a control commercial (CO) diet containing corn and soybean meal. Diets were isocaloric and isonitrogenous but differed in fat content and FA composition. Colostrum and milk were collected soon after farrowing and on day 7, respectively, for fatty acid and chemical analysis. Dietary treatments did not affect sow feed consumption, weight loss, number of live pig born and weaned per litter. Similarly, pig birth weights, and day 7, 14, and 21 weights did not differ among treatment groups. FL significantly (p < 0.05) increased linolenic (LNA C18:3co3) and decreased palmitic (C16:0) and oleic (C18:1) acids in colostrum. FL also significantly (p < 0.001) increased LNA and arachidonic acid (C20:4) in milk, while it decreased myristic (C14:0), palmitic and palmitoleic (C16:1) acids. Chemical analysis showed no significant differences in total solids (TS) and energy value of colostrum while a significant (p < 0.05) increase in TS, fat concentration and energy value was observed in milk from FL. A total of 335 piglets were used in the plasma study of lipid metabolites. Triglyceride (TG), cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and glucose were not affected by dietary treatment (p > 0.05). Feeding FL to sows during late gestation and lactation enriches sow milk and piglets with LNA.

The effect of a low-Cu diet supplied to gilts during pregnancy and early lactation on dams and their offspring was obtained in seven pairs of first littermate gilts. They were housed in stainless steel metabolism cages in a controlled environment and fed semi-purified diets containing either 2.13 or 12.25 ppm Cu from 30 days of gestation through two weeks of lactation. Feed intake was restricted to 2 kg/day during pregnancy and 4 kg/day in the first two weeks of lactation. Reproductive performance of gilts was measured. Balance studies were conducted at 30, 60 and 100 days of gestation. Mineral levels in the plasma of gilts and piglets, and in colostrum and milk were determined. The low-Cu diet did not affect (p $>$ 0.05) weight changes during pregnancy. The duration of parturition was shorter for low-Cu than for control gilts (3.19h vs 5.71h, p 0.05). Low-Cu gilts had lower plasma Cu in early- and mid-gestation and farrowed piglets with lower plasma Cu and higher plasma Zn concentrations (p 0.05). Plasma Cu and Fe levels of newborn piglets were lower than those of their dams (p 0.05). Low-Cu gilts had lower Cu and higher Zn content in colostrum and also lower Cu in milk than control gilts (p 0.05). Colostrum was richer in Cu and Zn than milk (p 0.05). Higher dry matter digestibility was observed in low-Cu gilts during early gestation (p 0.05). Compared to control gilts, the low-Cu gilts tended to have higher Cu and Zn retention which was achieved by reduction of fecal Cu and Zn excretion. Utilization of minerals appeared to increase as pregnancy progressed.

Apibendrinant literatūros apžvalgoje minėtus faktus yra aišku, jog mokslas įsiterpia į tiriamą problemą. Straipsnių, susijusių su reprodukcijos sutrikimų tyrimais, skaičius nuolat didėja. Galbūt dėl to, kad ES skiria daug dėmesio žemės ūkio plėtrai, galbūt konkurencingumas verčia ūkininkus nemažai lėšų skirti tyrimams, susietiems su reprodukcijos problemos išaiškinimu ir jos panaikinimu. Tyrimai atliekami visame pasaulyje, o atskirus rezultatus bandoma susisteminti, keliant įvairias hipotezes. Summarizing the facts mentioned in the literature review it is obvious that science intervenes to the researched problem. The number of articles where the disorders of reproduction are researched is increasing. The reasons can be the big attention from EU to the development of agriculture, the fact that competitiveness makes the farmers to spend quite a lot of money on researches where the problems of reproduction are being explained and the ways to eliminate it are proposed. The researches are done all over the world and separate results are systemized, various hypotheses are being formed. Farm related problems are being solved with the help of architects to plan the farm, as well as the specialists of air ventilation and conditioning, illumination and other fields. But even if we try to avoid problems they occur. Among the highlighted factors influencing the reproduction capacities of sow, factor of seasons is almost the most important element, and the disorders related with it raise a lot of discussions. The light regime virtually doesn’t affect the reproduction capacities under the high temperature, so the heat stays the main reason of summer time infertility. Talking about the influence of seasons to the interval of weaning until the rutting it can be stated that in the optimal combination of air temperature and photoperiod, the reproduction capacities can be stimulated; however each factor separately can inhibit the reproduction. The results of this research shows that... [to full text]

The 1830s to the 1930s saw the rise of large-scale industrial mining in the British imperial world. This book examines how literature of this era reckoned with a new vision of civilization where humans are dependent on finite, nonrenewable stores of earthly resources, and traces how the threatening horizon of resource exhaustion worked its way into narrative form. Britain was the first nation to transition to industry based on fossil fuels, which put its novelists and other writers in the remarkable position of mediating the emergence of extraction-based life. The book looks at works like Hard Times, The Mill on the Floss, and Sons and Lovers, showing how the provincial realist novel's longstanding reliance on marriage and inheritance plots transforms against the backdrop of exhaustion to withhold the promise of reproductive futurity. It explores how adventure stories like Treasure Island and Heart of Darkness reorient fictional space toward the resource frontier. And it shows how utopian and fantasy works like “Sultana's Dream,” The Time Machine, and The Hobbit offer imaginative ways of envisioning energy beyond extractivism. The book reveals how an era marked by violent mineral resource rushes gave rise to literary forms and genres that extend extractivism as a mode of environmental understanding.

Resumo:
Over the past three decades, efficient breeding and management have almost doubled the litter size of sows. Simultaneously, duration of farrowing has increased markedly. The expulsion phase of parturition in the hyper prolific sow is now 3 to 5 times longer than it was in the early 1990s. There has also been a constant downward trend in piglet birth weight, along with a similar trend in colostrum intake, which is an important risk factor for piglet mortality. Together with these trends, an increase in farrowing complications, such as postpartum dysgalactia and retention of placenta, has been reported. This paper investigates group housing of sows during gestation, farrowing and lactation, focusing on management strategies of the sow. In short, the sow needs to be given space and enrichment materials for adequate expression of nest-building behavior. Maternal characteristics may be utilized to improve the success rate of reproductive management during farrowing and early lactation. The lower piglet birth weight and compromised immunity of newborn piglets warrant investigation in the search for novel management tools. Robust breeds with somewhat lower litter size, but improved resilience and increased birth weight may be needed in the near future.

The actions and state of an individual in one generation can affect the state of offspring in the next generation, and hence the ability of these offspring to leave offspring themselves. This chapter deals with games in this multigenerational setting. Projection matrices are used to keep track of the state and number of descendants in successive years and generations. Invasion fitness is then defined in terms of the leading eigenvalue of the projection matrix. Simple examples illustrate these concepts and show how to apply them. Reproductive value is a function that measures how the ability to leave descendants in future generations depends on the current state. The Nash equilibrium condition is reformulated in terms of reproductive value maximization. This new criterion is used to justify the fitness proxy used in the analysis of sex allocation earlier in the book. The analysis is extended to the case where offspring may inherit aspects of their mother’s quality, with a focus on the question of whether high-quality mothers should produce sons or daughters. As a second application of reproductive value maximization, the co-evolution of female preference for a particular male trait and the trait itself is analysed, with the evolution of tail length in the widowbird as an illustrative application. Mean lifetime reproductive success is used as a fitness proxy in much of the book. Its use is finally justified in this chapter, where the fitness proxy is used to analyse the evolutionarily stable age of first reproduction in a population.

Resumo:
In case of significant technogenic geochemical loads on agricultural landscapes, the issue of ecological forecasting of environmental management is particularly important. Scientific studies of this issue are aimed at establishing the critical values for the components of the ecosystem, the classification of technogenic sources of hazardous substances, levels of soil contamination. This study presents a research to determine the content of heavy metals in the soils of the Ryazan region (Russia) and analyzed the level of their pollution. In the experiments organic, organomineral and mineral fertilizers systems were studied. From 2002 to 2008 were conducted lysimetric experiments on detoxification of elevated pollution of sod-podzol sandy loam soil, and from 2006 to 2008 of podzolized black soil. The participation of the non-ferrous metals plant emissions was detected in the pollution of sod-podzol light in granulometric composition soils with copper of up to 80 mg·kg-1, when the average concentration of Cu in the soil was 38.8 ±6 mg·kg-1. Humification plays a significant role in the formation of soil, its most important properties and characteristics. The saturation of 1 hectare of sown area with organic was slightly different in the experiments, but the intensity of accumulation of humus from the various agrochemical means did not almost differ. The problem of adaptation of plants in the conditions of technogenic environment is of primary importance. Plants have three biobarera against the admission of toxicants, these are the soil – the root – the stem – the reproductive organs. Grain in contaminated soil is environmentally hazardous as the content of Pb is indicated at the level of 0.68, 1.17 mg·kg-1 (MPC 0.5), Cd – 0.27, 0.11 mg·kg-1 (MPC 0.1), Zn – 76 mg·kg-1 (50 MPC). Use of fertilizing systems had a mostly positive effect, but products do not always become environmentally friendly.

The sun and beach tourist megadevelopments have been stimulated by the Inter-American Bank of Development (BID) as projects of strategy of tourist development, in Mexico there are born the Integrally planned Centers (CIP's) to give urban order, decentralizing big tourist investments principally of origin foreigners. They are identified before the tourist promotion by the investment of inputs and technology. The emplacements have grown and destine spaces for the tourist temporary and permanent. This type stand out for being representations of exclusivity, privacy and safety, demonstrating interlock in the series of tourist sets constructed to integrate the tourist megadevelopment, limiting an access that indicates the beginning of the montage reality - fiction, shaping the montage of fiction, that they lead to constructing a reality from the imaginary one. The happened out of the montage will be considered to be a reality, on there having be established a series of page lay-outs that will make the new reality, the reality - fiction, between visual representations of fantasy, of sounds and overcoat of ideas for transmitting, since motivation is that the tourist guides prove for the tourists. The representations are based on images of landscapes, persons, cities and symbolic emblems. Of the chunk of images made and rescued of the natural or real environment, a plot relation was conforming across the page lay-out to the suitable sequence of each one of the scenes formed by the imaginary one, to join and to channel the montages for the fulfillment of the representation in a movie. Of the most out-standing examples they are the creations from the imaginary one in the United Arab Emirates represented in the hotels as tower hilton baynunah, jumeirah Beach burj al-arab, hotel w, hotel apearon island y hotel eta, which expose services as purchases of luxury, centers spa with exclusive facilities for the sport and the free time, equipped rooms with the last technology. The colors and the forms are distinguished for standing out before the Arabic culture, but it is important to indicate that each of these megadevelopments will mark with this series of montages, which will allow to arrange the series of chunks of images made before the imagined fantasy. The megadevelopments differ for creating tourist scenes from the imaginary one, emphasizing the interlock across the search of the safety concept, with a marked interest to shape new communities, likewise elements like them I access they are guarded by safety personnel that was indicating the welcome to the tourist, Without knowing that it will be guided and monitored by secret video cameras in the mass of the building, also safety elements are distinguished for the mobility and accessibility to the set, emphasizing airway, navally ó terrestrial, the tour to the interior being marked under an stairs of descending level to beach level, there was showing each of the tourist scenes mounted to indicate the tour to the tourist to the interior of the set.
