Abstract Thomas D. Hamm (Earlham College) argues that a self-conscious, liberal Quakerism emerged in North America between 1790 and 1920. It had three characteristics. The first was a commitment to liberty of conscience. The second was pronounced doubts about orthodox beliefs, such as the divinity of Christ. Finally, liberal Friends saw themselves as holding beliefs fully consistent with early Quakerism. Stirrings appeared as early as the 1790s. Hicksite Friends in the 1820s, although perceiving themselves as traditionalists, manifested all of these characteristics. When other Hicksites took such stances in even more radical directions after 1830, however, bitter divisions ensued. Orthodox Friends were slower to develop liberal thought. It emerged after 1870, as higher education became central to the Gurneyite branch of Orthodox Quakerism, and as some Gurneyites responded to influences in the larger society, and to the changes introduced by the advent of revivalism, by embracing modernist Protestantism.

John Orvis, Eliab W. Capron, Mary L. Cox, and Abraham Brooke were four Quakers who had much in common. Geographically they were widely separated: Orvis lived at Ferrisburg, Vermont; Capron at Walworth, New York; Cox near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; and Brooke in Clinton County, Ohio. All, however, were Hicksite Friends committed to abolition, the principles of nonresistance, and the repudiation of all coercive force. All selfconsciously patterned themselves on the early Friends by bearing witness to what they saw as truth, whether in Friends' meetinghouses or in the churches of the “world's people.” And all shared the same fate: disownment for “disunity.”

The Australian Society for Microbiology does not have a strong representation of non-medical mycologists within its membership, although mycology has always been well represented in the clinical arena. Mycologists interested in plant pathology are more likely to be active in the Australasian Plant Pathology Society, those whose interests lie in natural ecosystems are members of the Australasian Mycological Society, and those interested in the compounds produced by fungi may belong to the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. There is, perhaps, scope for greater interaction between ASM and some of these other organisations.

British Quakers are arguably the least dogmatic group in Christendom; indeed, Universalist Friends would not describe themselves as Christians at all. Possibly because of this relaxed attitude to doctrine, some Friends tend also to assume that they operate in a rule-free environment. When I told the clerk of our Preparative Meeting that I was working on an article on ‘Quaker canon law’ her immediate response was, ‘Oh, we don't have any of that’—which is probably why Anthony Bradney and Fiona Cownie gave their recent study of the Quaker business method the gently-ironic title, Living Without Law.

AbstractA person’s egonet, the set of others with whom that person is connected, is a personal sample of society which especially influences that person’s experience and perceptions of society. We show that egonets systematically misrepresent the general population because each person is included in as many egonets as that person has “friends.” Previous research has recognized that this unequal weighting in egonets leads many people to find that their friends have more friends than they themselves have. This paper builds upon that research to show that people’s egonets provide them with systematically biased samples of the population more generally. We discuss how this ubiquitous egonet bias may have far reaching implications for people’s experiences and perceptions of frequencies of other people’s ties and traits in ways that may influence their own feelings and behaviors. In particular, these egonet biases may help explain people’s tendencies to disproportionately experience and overestimate the prevalence of certain types of deviance and other social behaviors and consequently be influenced toward them. We illustrate egonet bias with analyses of all friends among 63,731 Facebook users. We call for further empirical investigation of egonet biases and their consequences for individuals and society.

Lionel Penrose was born in London. His father, James Doyle Penrose a portrait painter, and his mother, Elizabeth Josephine (née Peckover) Penrose, were both members of the Society of Friends (Quakers) as their ancestors had been for 200 years. As Dr Harry Harris F.R.S., a colleague and author of Penrose's memoir in Biographical Memoirs of the Royal Society , observes, Lionel and his three brothers ‘were brought up strictly according to the religious principles of the Society of friends ... in later life though he remained a member of the Society of Friends he was not particularly zealous about religious meetings. However, his Quaker upbringing no doubt played an important part in determining his extreme dislike of show and pretensiousness and his pacifist outlook. Also he never acquired a taste for fiction’.

Abstract This work is a sociological study of Quakers, which investigates the impact that sectarianism has had on identity construction within the Religious Society of Friends in Ireland. The research highlights individual Friends’ complex and hybrid cultural, national and theological identities, mirrored by the Society’s corporate identity. This publication focuses specifically on examples of political and theological hybridity. These hybrid identities resulted in tensions that impact on relationships between Friends and the wider organisation. How Friends negotiate and accommodate these diverse identities is explored. It is argued that Irish Quakers prioritise ‘relational unity’ and have developed a distinctive approach to complex identity management. It is asserted that in the two Irish states, ‘Quaker’ represents a meta-identity, which is counter-cultural in its non-sectarianism, although this is more problematic within the organisation. Furthermore, by modelling an alternative, non-sectarian identity, Quakers in Ireland contribute to building capacity for transformation from oppositional, binary identities to more fluid and inclusive ones.

The Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers, which originated in England in the middle of the seventeenth century, has gone through many changes. After the exuberant, expansive early years, most Friends entered a period of quietism, in which they waited patiently for divine direction and largely withdrew from the society around them. At the beginning of the nineteenth century the majority of Friends on both sides of the Atlantic embraced the evangelical movement which had taken hold in both the Anglican church and the newer Methodist denomination. While some Quakers were caught up in such ultra-evangelical activities as revivals and the holiness movement, others turned away and accepted the new liberalism which appeared in Protestantism.

While previous studies have shown that communicating herd immunity can increase immunization intentions, it is unclear how the definition of the beneficiaries influences intentions. In a vignette study, using a new hypothetical influenza virus, 4,172 participants from five European countries (Bulgaria, N=873; Denmark, N=896; England, N=873; Estonia, N=916; and Italy, N=745) were randomized to one of three experimental conditions: (1) control (no mention of herd immunity), (2) society (social benefit of immunization for overall society mentioned), and (3) friends (social benefit for friends and family members mentioned). While the study did not find that communicating herd immunity influenced overall immunization intentions across the five countries, it found substantial cross-country differences in the effect of the communication. In England, friends increased intentions, while society increased intentions in Denmark but decreased it in Italy. While communicating the social benefit of immunization can influence intentions, its contrasting effects highlight the importance of empirically testing.

In this article, we examine a period when Sweden took a leap from a locally-oriented power structure to a more centralised state. This meant a profound social change. We concentrate on the connection between changes in rhetoric and changes in society that took place in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Our point of departure is that, in rhetoric, there occurred a shift in balance from the rhetoric of friendship to the rhetoric of patronage. In the context of Sweden and Finland, we discuss whether this was linked to changes in administration and in the social order as a whole. Were there any real changes behind this rhetorical transition? Our source material provides a glimpse into whether and how social changes were reflected within the correspondence of two noblemen living at the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth centuries.

The authors of the study analyze the problem of the mental revival of Ukrainians in the post-war period, as well as consequences of the division of society into the categories of “friends” and “strangers”. The authors distinguish three stages in which the Ukrainian society distanced itself from Soviet political system values in the transition from homo soveticus to the modern Ukrainian political mentality: political distillation, sublimation and calcination. Two waves of internal migrants in independent Ukraine have been identified: the first in 2014–2015, and the second and after February 24, 2022. The study focuses on the profession as an indicator for the level of political awareness among citizens. It is noted that since the beginning of the hybrid war, there has been a division of Ukrainian society into those who left and those who remained to live under occupation. The attention is also paid to the importance of understanding the motivation and behavior of these people, as well as reasons for making decisions in favor of or against cooperation with the occupants. The issue of potential and existing manifestations of collaboration in the occupied territories is analyzed. By using the “triangle of power and relations by Stephen Karpman”, the article examines general sentiments of Ukrainians on the division of their society into “friends” (“heroes”) and “strangers” (“traitors”) during military operations in Ukraine. The authors analyze communication and behavior types of citizens within three models: “victim”, “traitor” and “hero”. The study indicates that citizens who were and were not in the occupied territory are wary of each other; several scenarios of relations between them are identified. The first is acceptance as “friends”, a manifestation of compassion, a tolerant attitude, and willingness to help the “victim”. Another scenario is non-acceptance by the community, assignment to the category of “stranger”, and tense and suspicious attitude towards the “traitor”. The authors note that, in the post-war period, another division of society is likely to be observed, but not on the basis of the language or territory, but on the actual place of residence of citizens (in territories occupied or controlled by Ukraine) during hostilities.

This study investigates the impact of being with friends and companions regarding the Holly Quran. Human is naturally social and always need to live among human being. It is quite difficult to find one who may live away from the society and far from humans. If one lives away from the society will always live and will face with complexities and difficulties because being social and human needs to have friends as well as companions. Being with companions may have a positive impact. In addition, the purpose of this research is to determine the method of choosing a real friend and how to distance yourself from an evil and unwise companion, which in the research method of this article is an analytical topic based on Sharia texts, the result shows that the religion of Islam emphasizes on choosing a friend. On the basis of religiosity, the important feature should be prioritized, which includes having divine piety, intelligence, courage and honesty, which is the result of such a standard of parents, and which reflects the educational and academic efforts of education and educational institutions, and the rule of order. Studies have suggested that in individualistic societies, marriage constitutes an exclusive institution associated with reduced social involvement. This article tests this claim in a society that has experienced increased individualisation but has nevertheless remained highly familial. Analyses based on data from the Israel Social Survey show that married respondents were less involved with friends but more involved with family than their single counterparts. Results further revealed important differences by gender and between Jews and Israeli-Palestinians. No difference by marital status in involvement with kin was found for Israeli-Palestinian women, who also reported the lowest level of involvement with friends. The difference in involvement with friends was more pronounced among Israeli-Palestinians than Jews. Overall, findings indicate that Israeli society provides an interesting case that deviates from both the individualistic and collectivist models. Consistent with the new institutional approach to marriage, this article highlights the limitations of the exclusivity of marriage thesis.

The demise of morals among students nowadays has become more rampant, and positive actions are needed to address it. This issue requires the utmost attention by related parties to ensure students possess good morals and noble values to be applied in real-life situations within the society. Nowadays, cases involving moral failures especially among the youths have been frequently brought up. The problems happened due to moral demise and no practice of good values and morals among the society. The best education begins with the role and support from parents, teachers and friends by showing the correct moral practice according to Islam religion. Thus, the objective of this paper was to identify the factor of parents, teachers and friends in influencing students’ moral practice. The survey data were collected from special primary school students in the district of Johor Bahru using stratified random sampling and analysed using partial least-squares structural equations modeling (PLS-SEM) technique. The key findings show that parents, teachers and friends have influence towards students’ moral practice.

Contributions to the History of the Society of Friends of the Polish LanguageTowarzystwo Miłośników Języka Polskiego (‘Society of Friends of the Polish Language’) is the oldest such society and greatly distinguished for the popularization of knowledge about the language, and also for the knowledge about Polish itself. The few publications devoted to it, written mostly on the occasion of anniversaries, tend to overlook the figure of Andrzej Gawroński (1885–1927), an outstanding expert in Sanskrit, a linguist, and a professor of the Lviv University, despite the fact that archive materials show that he played a very significant role in the creation of the Society, and even penned the preliminary version of its charter. This paper presents Gawroński’s part in the forming of TMJP; it is based on extant letters from A. Gawroński to Kazimierz Nitsch from years 1919–1921 (Archive of Science of PAN and PAU in Cracow), letters from K. Nitsch to linguists Henryk Ułaszyn and Antonina Obrębska-Jabłońska, and also on the few printed materials from years 1918–1927.

In 1750 Samuel Bownas, then aged about seventy-four, published A Description of the Qualifications necessary to A Gospel Minister, a manual of advice to ministers and elders in the Religious Society of Friends. In 1738 the church discipline of the Society was codified and made available to Friends’ meetings, first in manuscript form and then from 1783 in print, providing rules and advice covering aspects of Quaker life from administration at national level to personal conduct. In the earliest days of the Society the appearance in print of such advice would have been considered superfluous. A Friend received his call to minister directly from the Spirit once he was in a receptive state as a result of turning to the light, then found the direction of his particular ministry. This call bore no relation to the education or status of the recipient, it was not recognized by any external rite, it could be of short duration, and it could take varied forms.

The activity of NGOs in Middle Pomerania after the end of WWII to the times of political changes and economic transition can be divided into two characteristic and distinct stages, i.e. one until the year 1950, and the other covering the years from 1950 to the political breakthrough of 1989. In the first stage, the activities directed at well-being of the child and the family were mostly undertaken by the Worker’s Society of the Friends of Children (Polish: RTPD), the Peasants’ Society of the Friends of Children (ChTPD), Polish Red Cross (PCK), Central Committee for Welfare (CKOS), the Polish Women League and the Society for Pupils’ Hostels and Scholarships. The above organizations kept sanitary and medical facilities, educational and care institutions, including children’s homes, correctional houses, preventoria, day care rooms, pupils’ hostels and boarding houses, crčches and kindergartens, ran summer camps for children, field kitchens, hospitals, night shelters, training workshops, catering establishments, outpatient clinics, ambulance services, health care establishments and mother and child care units. According to the data available at the archives of the Society of the Friends of Children in Koszalin covering the years 1946–1949, included in annual reports of RTPD and ChTPD, these organizations provided care to about 8,300 children CKOS attended to about 43,500 individuals, including children. The organization distributed clothing, footwear and medicine obtained within the framework of the structural assistance from the UN. According to data obtained from annual reports of the Polish Red Cross in Koszalin for the years 1945–1955, assistance was rendered to about 120,000 individuals. Towards the end of the first stage of the activity of NGOs, due to the changes in welfare policy of the country, many organizations were dissolved or had to change their profile. The most successful organization in the second stage was the Society of the Friends of Children. The Society provided social and vocational counseling services, ran day care rooms, kindergartens, village crèches, summer camps for children and summer and winter play centres. The available reports of regional TPD in Middle Pomerania for the years 1950–1975, state that there were 322 local associations of TPD in the region, amounting to 10,570 members. Work of NGOs in Middle Pomerania was basically determined by the long-run process of assimilation of the population that came from other regions of the country to new living conditions, by considerable war damages and lack of stability and security.

In His Review essay on “Civil Society, Liberalism and the Corporatist Alternative in the Middle East,” Louis J. Cantori continues his indefatigable promotion of corporatism as a lens for understanding Middle East politics. Lou and I have been friends for many years, and I know that I probably will not be able to shake his deep attachment to corporatism. Nonetheless, since the inspiration for his latest peroration was the two volume collection on civil society in the Middle East that I edited, I thought readers of the Bulletin might be interested in my response to his assertions.

Friends African Mission (FAM) set forth an education department to train corps of African teachers- evangelists. The pioneer teacher-evangelists formed the basis of a new Luhyia elite that helped transform Luhyia society. And as education became more relevant in the emerging colonial structure, African Christians began to demand for more schools, learning in English and higher education, at a pace that neither the government nor the missionaries could match. Consequently, African Christians began thinking of establishing government and missionary supported independent schools. The case of the proposed Mbale School and the successive establishment of Chavakali day secondary school illustrate this point. The influence of the Chavakali experiment on secondary education in Kenya was deep and lasting, because it revealed what local self-help could achieve.

This article deals with the activities of such a cultural and educational public organization of Ukraine as the Radio Friends Society. Attention is drawn to the fact that the society was surprisingly successful in reaching a wide audience of Soviet people through radio broadcasting, thus ensuring the fulfillment of one of the tasks of the regime of the USSR and the USSR — the education of a new type of person with a Marxist-Bolshevik worldview. The purpose of the study is to determine the main directions of activity of the Society of Friends of Radio and, on this basis, to outline the ways in which it played an important role in issues related to the organization of radio broadcasting and radio broadcasting in Ukraine in the early 1930s of the 20th century. Among such directions is the deployment of organizational and mass work around radio broadcasting, namely: organization of radio listeners' gatherings, assistance in the organization of high-quality broadcasts, their collective listening and discussion, participation in the organization of local and grassroots broadcasting. Regarding the ways of organizing radio broadcasting and radio broadcasting, the author defined the following: the use of permanent purposeful and systematic political pressure and strict control over all aspects of the activities of the Society of Friends of Radio; constant emphasis on the shortcomings of the work, even the smallest ones, drawing people's attention to it; constant expansion of members of the radio community from different categories of the population, including conscripts, students of technical schools, and high school students; transferring the solution of the material and technical support of radio broadcasting to the shoulders of the radio community; etc.

This study examined the associations of perceived socially unfavorable attitudes toward homosexuality and same-sex marriage with suicidal ideation in non-heterosexual and heterosexual participants from first (Wave 1, 23 months prior to same-sex marriage referendums) and second (Wave 2, one week after the referendums) wave surveys in Taiwan. Data provided by 3239 participants in Wave 1 and 1337 participants in Wave 2 who were recruited through a Facebook advertisement were analyzed. Participants completed an online questionnaire assessing suicidal ideation and perceived unfavorable attitudes toward homosexuality and same-sex marriage from Taiwanese society, heterosexual friends, and family members. The results indicate that perceived unfavorable attitudes toward homosexuality from Taiwanese society, heterosexual friends, and family members were positively associated with suicidal ideation among non-heterosexual individuals in the first but not the second survey. In addition, among non-heterosexual individuals, such attitudes toward same-sex marriage in family members and in heterosexual friends were positively associated with suicidal ideation in the Wave 1 and Wave 2 surveys, respectively. Perceived unfavorable attitudes toward homosexuality and same-sex marriage in heterosexual friends were associated with suicidal ideation in heterosexual participants with a favorable attitude but not in those individuals with an unfavorable attitude toward homosexuality, in both surveys. Perceived socially unfavorable attitudes toward homosexuality and same-sex marriage were significantly associated with suicidal ideation before and after same-sex marriage referendums; however, the associations varied between non-heterosexual and heterosexual individuals.

In the spring of this year, as I prepared for my year as president of ECS, I called about 30 people and asked them to serve on the Society’s various committees. I must admit that I had conflicting feelings going into the process. On the one hand, I was asking colleagues and friends to donate their time and effort—and I’m aware that for many of us spare time has become almost an oxymoron. On the other hand, I was offering a group of Society members the opportunity to become involved in governing and operating an organization to which many of us feel a deep attachment and commitment.

After the outbreak of war in Europe in 1914, the British government’s call to arms caused a moral and religious dilemma for members of the Religious Society of Friends (Friends or Quakers), whose fundamental principle was (and is) the rejection of war and violence. Many Friends sought means of reconciling their duty to God with their duty to their country, and the prospect of helping to alleviate the suffering of the civilian victims of the fighting provided them with an acceptable alternative. Together with fellow Friend T. Edmund Harvey MP, Dr Hilda Clark set about rallying the support of Friends and sympathisers willing to go out to France to administer humanitarian aid to non-combatants. The committee adopted the name used by the distinguished organisation that had administered relief in the Franco-Prussian War—the Friends’ War Victims’ Relief Committee (FWVRC). Extensive and multifaceted aid work was carried out in much of northern France by the FWVRC’s general relief team. The following essay, however, examines more closely the medical assistance provided under the leadership of Hilda Clark. In particular, it focuses on the maternity hospital created and run by the FWVRC in Châlons-sur-Marne, which became a lasting legacy of the Friends to the people of the Marne.

Mary Gavell’s The swing is about an aging mother who suffers from ‘empty nest syndrome’. This paper analyzes the novel from the perspective of feminism, argues that the direct causes of her ‘empty nest syndrome’ are her estranged relationship with her husband, son and friends. And the underlying cause of her ‘empty nest syndrome’ is that she is oppressed in the patriarchal society which restricts her to the role of mother and wife. In the patriarchal society, women rely too much on the relationship with their husband and son for their happiness, and thus lose their real ‘self’, and become invisible. In order to cure the ‘empty nest syndrome’, old women should pull themselves out of the sole role of mother and wife in the family, build their own ‘selves’ and set up connections with friends outside the family.

Children and games are difficult to separate. In playing the games, a child can hone many things, such as how to make friends, understanding the value of loyal friends, enthusiasm, the feeling of never give up, how to keep trying, tolerance towards others, and much more. By playing, especially in games that involve groups, a child will get the experience that will have a major influence on the formation of character and growth and development. Japanese society is known as a group society. The involvement of a person in a group is one of the ways on how to be a part of a community group. The pride of being a member of a community group is shown by the role and obligation of someone who is included in a group to realize the group’s goals together. Of course, the importance of group awareness is not taught briefly but is something that has been accustomed since early childhood. This research will discuss the meaning of games made by children in Japan that form the character of the group society.

Between amateur passions and a professional academic agenda. The Society of the Friends of Learning in Przemyśl as a publishing center before 1939 The article discusses the publishing activity of the Society of the Friends of Learning in Przemyśl (TPN) from its establishment in 1909 until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. Publishing academic works was one of the TPN statutory goals beside e.g. running a museum, a library, an archive, conducting archaeological work and activity promoting various fields of knowledge. Despite lack of a specialized publishing agenda, thanks to voluntary work of a few people, particularly the historian Jan Smołka, the TPN published valuable editions of sources, archival aids and monographs. Seven volumes of the “Rocznik TPN” periodical were also published with over a dozen articles, mainly in the field of history and related disciplines. The authors of the TPN publications were mainly local researchers as well as academics from Lviv and Kraków. Thanks to its management of the town’s archive material and the library with an extensive book collection, the Society created conditions for carrying out historical research.
