Laughter is a nonverbal vocal expression that often communicates positive affect and cooperative intent in humans. Temporally coincident laughter occurring within groups is a potentially rich cue of affiliation to overhearers. We examined listeners’ judgments of affiliation based on brief, decontextualized instances of colaughter between either established friends or recently acquainted strangers. In a sample of 966 participants from 24 societies, people reliably distinguished friends from strangers with an accuracy of 53–67%. Acoustic analyses of the individual laughter segments revealed that, across cultures, listeners’ judgments were consistently predicted by voicing dynamics, suggesting perceptual sensitivity to emotionally triggered spontaneous production. Colaughter affords rapid and accurate appraisals of affiliation that transcend cultural and linguistic boundaries, and may constitute a universal means of signaling cooperative relationships.

Abstract Mediated interaction plays a significant role in the social life of adolescents in Norway. The purpose of the present article is to examine the qualities of mediated interaction and the integration of mediated and immediate social spheres, suggesting that the ability to juggle between online and offline social spheres has become a characteristic element of social competence in network societies. More specifically, the analysis looks at the use of personal media for maintaining and developing existing social relationships and for extending social networks. Qualitative interviews with 20 Norwegian adolescents constitute the empirical base. The analysis explains how interaction takes on mundane forms, confirming the value of social relationships between in-person meetings. Moreover, it is argued that mediated communication differs from face-to-face communication, not by being less meaningful, but by enabling other forms of disclosing practices. Mediated forms of communication, hence, have an influence on the character of social ties and networks.

AbstractIn September 1828, societies of the ‘Friends of Ireland’ were founded throughout the United States and British North America for the purpose of raising funds and disseminating propaganda in support of the O’Connellite campaign for Catholic emancipation. In March 1831, the societies were briefly revived to agitate for repeal of the Union. The first Irish diasporic social movement to appear in Britain’s overseas empire, the British North American Friends of Ireland enjoyed greatest support in French-speaking Lower Canada, where for a time sympathetic local patriotes perceived a common cause with their new Irish neighbours. This article explores the transatlantic reciprocal interactions, cross-ethnic alliances and regional distinctions which characterised early O’Connellism in Lower Canada. It follows its initial successes to its virtual collapse in the early 1830s, as an increasingly polarised Lower Canada slid towards rebellion. Comparisons are employed with similar agitation elsewhere in British North America, in the United States, and in Ireland. It is argued that instrumentalist explanations for Irish diasporic nationalism, typically drawn from studies of post-famine Irish-America, do not convincingly account for the appearance and form of O’Connellite nationalism in British North America.

This study explored the associations between relational and overt aggression and social status, and tested whether the peer correlates of aggression vary as a function of best friends’ aggression during early adolescence in urban India. One hundred and ninety-four young adolescents from primarily middle-to-upper-class families in Surat, India participated. Analyses revealed unique associations between both forms of aggression and perceived popularity, and between relational aggression and social preference. The consideration of best friend aggression (and in one case, gender) explained some variability in the associations between both forms of aggression and the peer correlates, suggesting that the consideration of best friends’ aggression, particularly in complex and changing non-Western societies such as India, may lead to new insight into why not all aggressive adolescents are disliked and popular.

Background One of the aims of the Young Talent Group (YTG) is to make United European Gastroenterology (UEG) more attractive to young fellows interested in gastroenterology (GI), and to actively involve them in UEG activities and the activities of their respective national societies. In 2017, we conducted a survey among the Friends of the UEG YTG with the aim of identifying the state of organization and needs of Young GI Sections (YGISs) throughout Europe, highlighting areas for further development and improvement. Aims The aim of the current web-based survey was to assess the progress of YGISs over 1 year, and persisting hurdles in forming and running a YGIS. Results Overall, 38 of 42 Friends answered the survey (91%). The number of YGISs has increased significantly from 12 in 2017 to 25 in 2019. Young gastroenterologists remained supported, but not influenced, by national societies. Results of the survey suggest that a lack of dedicated and motivated fellows has replaced a lack of funding as the most prevalent hurdle in forming these types of sections. Conclusion Our survey shows that the development of YGISs has improved markedly within the last 2 years. However, several limitations, like underrepresentation in subcommittees of national societies, remain and need to be addressed in order to involve young gastroenterologists in their respective national societies and within UEG, to pave the way for future research, education and excellent quality of care, and reduce health inequalities across Europe.

The objective of this article is to analyse the social relationships within online communities of anorectics, their bonds, their emotions and friendships, and their subsequent relation to anorexia nervosa. The research has focused on their blogs and their forums, which create a space in which they share their experiences, and sometimes encourage each other not to give up on their eating disorder – which they view as an illness, but an illness that has become their lifestyle, and their attitude towards life. Within the article an analysis of the special bonds of friendship that tie the members of the online community together will be presented. Special attention will be paid to the similarities between secret societies and friendship bonds within pro-ana communities.

Local and affiliated order friendly societies which together formed the largest working-class movement in Victorian Britain have been largely ignored by social and labour historians. Oddfellows, Foresters, Druids, Shepherds and Gardeners with their ritual, regalia, and secrecy imitative of Freemasonry, emerged as benefit societies in industrial Yorkshire and Lancashire in the second and third decades of the nineteenth century. The orders exploded into the East Riding in the wake of the passing of the New Poor Law in 1834 and its implementation three years later but many branches suffered severe set-backs or extinction during the economic crisis which hit agriculture in 1848-52. A substantial number of those that survived, many of them well into the twentieth century, chose independence rather than the authoritarian rule of a national headquarters.Affiliated branches far from being the preserve of the urban artisan, as has been often suggested, had an extensive agricultural worker membership. The founders and leaders of branches, which were most commonly located in larger open settlements with a substantial nonconformist and artisan population, were drawn from all sections of the membership but village craftsmen predominated. The club anniversary which became the principal feast day for many villages was initially, along with public house meetings and funeral ritual, much criticised by Anglican clergy. They found, however, that their annual sermon and attendance at the dinner gave them their principal point of contact with the rural working-class, a fact also realised after 1885 by politicians. The sickness and funeral benefits provided by the orders were considerable in relation to agricultural workers' incomes in the mid-19th century but higher wages and the passing of the National Insurance Act in 1912 considerably decreased their significance to the rural community.

Friendly societies and fraternal associations were self-governing convivial clubs that provided members with mutual aid in case of sickness or death. Over the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries they blossomed around the English speaking world, attracting millions of members. Combining archival research and quantitative methods, this thesis is the first multi-national economic history of the friendly societies and fraternal associations. How effective were these organisations as insurers? Were they able to overcome the problems of moral hazard and adverse selection? Were they significant in generating 'social capital'? How were they affected by the emergence the welfare state?

AbstractDrawing on biographic interviews conducted with LGBTQ people based in Lisbon, this chapter unpacks the reasons why people cohabit with friends. The chapter starts with an introduction to the topic of friendship and how it has been historically constructed in Western societies. The second part draws attention to the empirical experience of living with friends. To understand why and how people manage cohabiting with friends, a focus will be placed on recent processes of gentrification and on the dynamics of care. Towards the end of the chapter, it will be suggested that houses designed to host nuclear families are heterotopic spaces where a variety of social practices occur.

AbstractIn many societies, it is not possible to migrate without the assistance of one or more intermediaries, including friends, family, recruiters, travel agents, “smugglers” and many others. In these contexts, brokerage is viewed as a normalised and entirely legitimate cultural practice to navigate many aspects of everyday life. Whilst not new, the nature of intermediaries’ involvement in migration has dramatically transformed over the past 50 years. Today, intermediaries are significant actors in influencing how migration happens, migrants’ experiences of migration as well as in shaping developmental outcomes. From migrants’ perspectives, intermediaries make mobility possible in a world in which immobility is often the norm. This chapter poses the question: how are global inequalities in relation to migration mediated by intermediaries? To address it, the authors review the relationships between intermediaries, mediated migration and inequalities associated with (1) borders, (2) income and poverty and (3) living in new destinations.

Socialization can be understood as the fundamental process of transmitting culture and social organization to the next generations, thus ensuring the continuity, stability and perpetuation of society. (Schifirne?, 2004, 67). Within European societies and not only them, family is, or should be, the most important socialization agent. Lately, alongside school and the group of friends, social media became an important factor in the socialization of young generations, as the interaction of the young through socialization networks increases so quickly. Parents should supervise them carefully but because of their lack of time and sometimes ignoring the impact of socialization networks on the child's socialization process, they leave small school age children much too free. One of the real problems is that more and more children use network socialization web sites but many of them do not take the necessary measures to protect online. The purpose of the study is to investigate the weight of online socialization networks in the socialization process of primary education cycle pupils, the time spent by children on such networks and online computer games, the parents' manner of supervising the computer activity, the parents' management of the children's leisure time. The general working hypotheses of this study are: 1. There are significant differences between the pupils in the urban environment and those in the rural environment as regards the time spent on the computer on socialization networks. 2. There are significant differences between the parents of the pupils in the urban environment and the parents of the pupils in the rural environment as regards the supervision of the children's computer activity. The methodology used in this investigative approach is the questionnaire applied on a group of 125 pupils from primary school from urban and rural areas and their parents. The questionnaires were applied through the teachers at such classrooms. The Findings and Results of this study have aimed at the verification of research hypotheses. The working hypotheses have been confirmed following data processing and interpretation.

Abstract Rising like lotus blooms from bloodied war-torn devastation and muddied destitution of war crimes, divided societies and imperialistic ravages of Western colonialism, the two Indochina nations of Vietnam and Cambodia have shown amazing power of resurgence in less than 50 years. In many regional league tables, Vietnam notably, have even pulled ahead to show amazing achievements in GDP and education. What has happened seems like a distant past today. What are the unique cultural roots of this human resilience and socio-economic dynamism? At an individual level, it is not often that post traumatic stress disorder of abused victims show their mental and emotional suffering. One can only note the behavioral signs which impede normal life and block success. Part of this presentation is to share with the audience the clues to help one recognize such indicative signs with the objective of supporting those who are suffering. There is an effective way to uproot the self-blame, anger and hatred associated with suppressed memories and to overcome the submerged negativities in subconscious minds of the afflicted. Forgiveness meditation is a mindful self-healing way of peaceful living, and when paired as an integral part Insight Meditation, the underlying benefits can empower the healed to progress onward to bigger success. Real-life cases of two personalities who have taken different paths to demonstrate the power of mindful living towards human resilience and effective healing in the midst of bleak uncertainties are shared: A. A Cambodian (multiple) noble peace prize nominee who demonstrated not only to his people, but also the world, to seek the only resource where we can find true peace and genuine understanding of truths... in our own hearts. Like many of his compatriots, his entire family, friends and disciples were massacred. A forest monk and meditation master turned peacemaker at the United Nations, he walked step by step bringing forth the spring of hope in the hearts of the shell shocked survivors. Tens of thousands wept as he chants the timeless metta verses of loving kindness and other traditional spiritual chants lost in the unspeakable sorrows of war and ideological conflicts. B. A postwar Vietnamese case study of a globally successful social entrepreneur, she was left to fend for herself aged 16 years after her entire family was killed by foreign powers. Her social enterprise employed the war destitutes, former prostitutes and the disabled to produce quality handicrafts and furniture made from organic resources. Her voice is recorded here to illustrate her maxim of “one must forgive to move on but the painful lessons must never be forgotten” in order to sustain success. Environmental awareness has increased as a result of disruption of the ecological balance. As consumers' concerns about the natural environment have been increasing with each passing day, consumers act environmentally-friendly in developed societies. In fact, environmental awareness is not only for consumers, but also it is important for companies. Because the companies are required to meet consumers' needs and expectations. Many companies are implementing environmental awareness within the framework of green marketing practices. They also try to be superior to their competitors. In today's world, companies must be sensitive to the ecological environment in order to be able to survive and compete.

Societies in various parts of the world face social and economic challenges caused by a silver tsunami. Nonetheless, the accelerated aging processes also constitute a trigger for a positive change in the way public and private spaces are designed. The research task aimed to identify and analyze good practices in the design of furniture and interior design elements in selected public spaces adapted to the needs of seniors in selected countries of the European Union. The geographical scope included: Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Taking into account the principles of universal design, field research was carried out in selected public institutions. Existing solutions were assessed in the context of their accessibility and safety for seniors. Photographic documentation was prepared, which constituted the source material. Moreover, interviews with owners and creators of the spaces have been performed. Based on the research a set of good practices was identified to support the process of designing furniture and interior design elements adapted to the needs of seniors, taking into account both functional and aesthetic aspects. These good practices do not only serve seniors but also other public space users with diverse abilities and needs.

Both in Poland and globally we can observe significant demographic changes triggered by the phenomenon called ‘ageing societies’. According to the data of the Central Statistical Office (GUS), in 2020 there were 9.8 million people aged 60+ in Poland and this number is forecast to increase to 13.7 million in 2050. With the longer life span, we can observe that the period of potential professional activity gets extended. We might assume that people will be working longer and retiring later than in the past. In view of economy, the seniors could partially meet the labour force demand which arises due to disproportionate structure of population in different age groups. With the demand for employees in the working age exceeding the supply, seniors are becoming an attractive alternative. Alongside those trends, the image of a senior in social awareness has changed. Professional potential of the seniors due to their abilities and experience has become widely acknowledged. Professional activation with no age barriers poses a chance for the seniors to longer maintain social bonds, which in turn translates into healthier ageing process. This is further reflected in the increase of the quality of life (in the broad meaning of the term) of ageing societies. With the currently changing working methods, we can find more and more ‘distant work’ job offers that are increasing relying on new technologies. This allows the interested parties to render professional services in their places of residence. At the same time, this trend effectively counteracts the adverse phenomenon of cyber exclusion of people in 65+ age group and extends their options of professional activation. The ageing process is inextricably linked with a decline in the efficiency of senses. It is important for the architecture, and the residential space in particular, to adapt to the changed abilities of its inhabitants in order to mitigate the impact of their physical and cognitive deficiencies. It is vital in the process of supporting good health condition and well-being. Because most of the elderly prefer remaining in their previous places of residence (ageing in place), the residential space should be designed in view of a universal and flexible layout that might be rearranged to adequately respond to any potential deficiencies. As per principle, interior design should be adaptable to reduced motor skills of the residents. The interior of an apartment should be envisaged as a place that can be adapted - if needed - to suit those requiring long term healthcare or rehabilitation. A workplace zone or a gym zone facilitating physical exercises might be perceived as a suitable extension of space and functions of an apartment. Moreover, technology can be viewed as a solution effectively supporting safe and unassisted living in one’s own apartment. Technology stands a good chance to support the physical and psychosocial well-being of residents. The article aims to present recommendations for designing senior-friendly apartments to facilitate their fitness and professional activation, thus, maintaining their good health condition, the feeling of comfort, safety and independence. Carefully designed space, sensitive to physical limitations and abilities as well as personal aspirations, will predetermine the quality of life of an individual and will exert impact on the society as a whole. An apartment should be responsive to needs of inhabitants that change as they age; it shall, furthermore, be age friendly and free of any spatial barriers, as well as activating, supporting and at the same time preventing any stigmatisation and social exclusion.

Mobility is an essential component of all European societies and is at the heart of the European Integration project. It is widely recognized that all citizens should be able to participate in economic, social and cultural life. European Union addresses investment in multimodal, environment-friendly, green, safe transport and mobility, to name some of the objectives, it seeks to achieve by mobilizing different funds. The idea of accessible transport is also high on the EU agenda. Accessibility is a multi-faceted objective, it can include the availability of information, the connection of metropolitan areas with rural or remote areas and also other aspects. However, the basic idea of accessibility in an integrated area should primarily mean the barrier-free mobility of people with disabilities and people with reduced mobility. This problem deserves to receive much more attention than is currently the case, considering that many recent studies estimate that the number of senior citizens and people with disabilities will double in the next 20 years.
