This thesis explores a web-based method to do studies in cultural evolution. Cumulative cultural evolution (CCE) is defined as social learning that allows for the accumulation of changes over time where successful modifications are maintained until additional change is introduced. In the past few decades, many interdisciplinary studies were conducted on cultural evolution. However, until recently most of those studies were limited to lab experiments. This thesis aims to address the limitations of the experimental methods by replicating a lab-based experiment online. A web-based application was developed and used for replicating an experiment on conformity by Solomon Asch [1951]. The developed application engages participants in an optical illusion test within different groups of social influence. The major finding of the study reveals that conformity increases on trials with higher social influence. In addition, it was also found that when the task becomes more difficult, the subject's conformity increases. These findings were also reported in the original experiment. The results of the study showed that lab-based experiments in cultural evolution studies can be replicated over the web with quantitatively similar results.

Women who spend more time on social media platforms have a greater chance of developing symptoms of depression (Burnborg & Burdzovic, 2019). When women are using social media, they spend the majority of their time looking at the lives and social accomplishments of other users. This comparison may cause them to experience hopelessness, anxiety, and depression (Litchtfuss, 2019). Women are the most likely to experience symptoms of depression (Harvard Health, 2011). With the increased popularity of social media, depression is becoming a growing problem. Published research shows a relationship between social media and depression (Burnborg & Burdzovic, 2019). It would be beneficial to examine college-aged females specifically at Mississippi State University, a gap in previous research. This research will look at Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Tik Tok, Pinterest, and YouTube to evaluate which social media platforms are used the most in individuals who are ranked on a depression scale created by Kroenke (Kroenke, 2001). This research is important because depression is becoming a growing problem among college-aged women and social media is prevalent in most lives.

It may come as no surprise that Twitter is the most popular social media platform where student athletes, particularly men, post inappropriate content. Male student athletes’ inappropriate tweets have become such a problem for universities, athletic departments, and the NCAA that coaches are forced to place a ban on their players’ social media usage or hire third party monitoring systems. Unfortunately, these reactive responses have not alleviated the problem of athletes differentiating what content is appropriate or inappropriate to tweet on their Twitter accounts. Analysis of the data collected from scholarly journal articles, textbooks, and popular press articles revealed that social media education would be the most effective prevention method to lessen student athletes’ inappropriate tweets. This project uses Dr. Mark Robinson’s approach to Personal Player Development in constructing its two resources—multimedia workshops and an interactive Canvas site. The purpose of this project is for student athletes to be more aware of their social media content by knowing how to post appropriate tweet messages on their personal Twitter accounts in order to enable athletes, especially men, to comprehend why certain tweet messages are classified as inappropriate and, therefore, should never be made public. This project is significant because it proposes a preventative method based on increased social media awareness, as opposed to typical reactionary measures.

This thesis offers a critical history of the Glasgow University Media Group from 1975 to 2005. It argues that, viewed as a whole, the GUMG’s work constitutes a School of media sociology, which can now be recognised as such. The GUMG has lead research into the production, content and reception of public communications and has made a contribution to its field that it as significant as those made by the Birmingham School; the Toronto School and the Chicago School among others. However, there are barriers to that recognition, with which this thesis is also concerned. They are the misperception that the work of the group is biased by Marxist analysis and is motivated by a conspiracy theory of the media. The thesis also looks at the GUMG’s increasingly intimate relationship with broadcasters and examines how that relationship has contributed to a public sociology of the media, which is the most distinctive feature of the Glasgow School of media.

Today's K-12 classrooms are increasingly comprised of students who accomplish much of their informal learning through digital media and technology. In response, a growing number of educators are considering how they might draw upon these informal learning experiences to support student engagement and learning in the classroom through technology. The purpose of this study is for social studies educators, school administrators, teacher educators and curriculum developers to understand more about the potentials and limitations of integrating technology such as a digital text. This research focuses on the differences in experiences using a digital text and a printed text from the perspective of four high school social studies classes. The curriculum for the printed and digital texts was developed in collaboration with the Choices Program for the Twenty-First Century at Brown University. This research was based on the assumption that the thoughtful integration of a digital text in the classroom can support student engagement and differentiation while facilitating learning that students can readily transfer to multiple political, economic and social contexts beyond the classroom. Critically, students of poverty and students of color have the most to gain from increased access to digital technology in the public education system. People of color and people of poverty in the United States have significantly less access to technology at home than their white and middle class counterparts. Therefore, the classroom presents an opportunity for students who lack access to digital learning opportunities in their home environments to develop the technological fluency and digital literacy that are increasingly necessary to engage in multiple political and economic spheres in the United States. The current literature on digital technology in education lacks sufficient empirical evidence of the potential benefits and challenges that digital technologies may offer secondary social studies education from the perspective of the classroom. Therefore, the classroom field test that was undertaken for this research offers a more empirical understanding of digital texts from the important perspectives of students and teachers in the classroom learning community. This research was conducted in a large, suburban high school in the Portland Metropolitan area and compared the experiences of tenth-grade World History classes working with a print text to the experiences of tenth-grade World History classes working digitally. The mixed-methods multiple-case study design addresses the following research questions: a) In what ways, if at all, does a digital text provide high school social studies' students different affordances and academic skills than a printed text? and b) How, if at all, do high school social studies students interact differently with a digital text from a printed text? The analysis of data offered evidence that the use of the digital text supported technological fluency, the creation of more sophisticated learning products, differentiation for multiple learning styles and a more supportive reading experience due to its multimodal features. These unique academic affordances were not equivalently supported by the use of the print text. However, the type of text did not demonstrably influence students' ability to communicate their thinking in analytical writing. The analysis of data also suggested that students were somewhat more cognitively and behaviorally engaged in the digital case studies. Importantly, the digital text did not create a negatively discrepant learning experience for students of color but, rather, supported increased student engagement for both white students and students of color. The data also suggested that the digital text posed significant challenges for both students and teachers. The digital experience required students to learn new and challenging technology skills. The digital text also required more class time and created more classroom management challenges for teachers than the print experience. Despite these additional challenges, both students and teachers expressed a preference for the digital experience. Thus, the digital text seemed to provide both a more challenging and a more rewarding experience for students. This study has implications for educators that are interested in thoughtfully integrating a digital text or, a similar digital technology, in comparable classroom contexts.

What is the potential of inclusion of young Muslims in the Finnish media literacy education? In this thesis I answer this research question to draw a conclusion on the importance of coherently operationalizing performance indicators of inclusion in national media literacy policies, which can be transferred and utilized transnationally to counter social exclusion of young Muslims in media literacy education in Western Europe. I define and highlight four core criteria of inclusion to evaluate policy process and input, which contribute with answering the research question posed in this thesis. Moreover, a qualitative content analysis based on a single case study approach is applied to uncover all relevant information from the primary and secondary literature concerning the case selected. Similar to a number of academic studies closely related to the topic of this thesis, I apply the theoretical framework of policy evaluation as a lense to explain and explore the phenomenon under investigation.  Conclusively, this thesis suggests that the potential of inclusion of young Muslims in the Finnish media literacy education is moderate due to the existence of both coherently defined as well as less coherently defined goals, objectives, and related performance indicators of inclusion in the Finnish media literacy policy. Key Words: Inclusion, media literacy policy, media literacy education, Islamist radicalization and extremism, social exclusion, transnational, young Muslims.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine alternative forms of media developed in the USA between the 1940's and 1980's, which were proposed in order to come to terms with the faults associated with printed text and the paper medium. The examination is concentrated on relevant literature on the media and not the actual media themselves. The questions asked were:1. Why were alternative forms of media presented for replacing printed text and what were the aims of those wanting to replace it?2. What were these alternative forms of media and how did they compare with printed text with regard to storing and disseminating text? The study concentrates on two aspects of the different media: their ability to store and disseminate text. Due to the increasing amount of scientific research results in the form of printed text the research community experienced growing problems with text dissemination and recall. These problems caused delays in research procedures hampering scientific development. Due to the increasing importance of scientific research, not least its role in international conflicts, a solution to these problems was regarded as being of the utmost importance. The reasons behind wanting to replace printed text were to alleviate problems of distribution, recall and storage. Alternative media were developed with the hope of coming to terms with one or more of these problems. The study has found that media development has partly solved these problems but that new or different media are not completely problem free.

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of social media on crisis communication. To evaluate this impact, a case study method was utilized examining the crisis communication response of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill on April 20, 2010. This study focused on the response of the responsible party, British Petroleum, and the general public over three social media: Facebook, Twitter, and blogs. Through extensive analysis of both the company's and public response to the Gulf spill, nine implications were identified regarding social media's influence on crisis communication. These implications highlighted the potential for organizations to build interpersonal relationships with its publics. These relationships were found to be crucial in times of crises. The implications of this study also pointed to interactivity, using a "human voice," trust, and credibility as crucial factors in building these relationships and leading an effective crisis response across social media. This study also noted the new stress for organization's to respond quickly to crises as a result of instant news brought by social media. Implications of this study also highlighted social media's influence on individuals becoming contributing members of a crisis response. While social media has influenced the practice of crisis communication in many ways, this study found that the principles and ethics of the field have remained the same. In conclusion, analysis suggests that BP neglected using social media in its crisis response, a channel which has entered the mainstream of crisis communication. As a result, this study recommends the use of social media before, during, and after a crisis to ensure the welfare of a company and its relationship with its publics.

This essay will investigate if it is possible to experience the same experience on social media as in reality. This is to be done with Randall Collins theory of interaction rituals. This interaction ritual contains four aspects for it to be considered a successful interaction ritual. Social media has led to a revolution due to the social and cultural effects of the users. Technically, it has led to an evolution. This essay has been conducted with qualitative research method. Focus Group Interview starts with an initial discussion about the mobile phone as technology where applications and time aspects are in focus, as well as what the informants generally consider about social media. Previous research that has been done shows a lack of sociological and social psychological research. The previous research used in this paper shows that overuse leads to consequences for the user that society should be able to meet which is the problem. G H Mead's interaction theories have been linked to interaction on social media by interacting with people on social media and they connect themselves to social media automatically without thinking about before. It has become a natural act. I come before ME. The result shows that the mobile phone is used to connect to social media used to a large extent among the informants. They believe that what is presented on social media is impressed. The informants have experienced interaction rituals in the reality that gave them emotional energy. They indicate that the experience of successful interaction rituals through social media can be experienced to some extent, but that it precedes past experiences of events in the reality.
I kommer före ME.

This study is based on an inductive approach where the collected empirical data has been categorized in themes on which we have based the discussion in this paper. Using a qualitative method, nine appropriately selected respondents were questioned with an unstructured interview guide. The transition to a society characterized by interaction has caused a greater part for bilateral communication between consumer and consumer but also between consumer and company. The increased usage and integration on Internet has resulted in so called social media channels. User generated material is published on these media channels which leads to discussions about companies, products and services. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate how the tourism industry utilizes social media in communication and marketing and to present the effects that come from working with media channels. Companies can no longer ignore the fact that consumers discuss them and their range of products and services through social media online. Companies need to adapt to this change in the way they use communication channels in media, surrender some control and let consumers drive the brand. They also need effectively manage their image in order to build and preserve the brand value and create stronger and better relations with their customers.

The aim of this study is to investigate how honor-related violence is constructed by media. Over the years, a number of terrible stories of humans have been noticed in media. This forms the basis of why it is important to study media in relations to social work. In today’s society, media has great power, which means that media has a huge impact on how social problems are perceived; honor- related violence is an example of this. The core of this study is to analyze from what perspective honor-related violence is produced in newspapers, and there are three different perspectives to this; the cultural-, gender- and intersectional perspective. The empirical material we have used in this study is news articles of the greatest newspaper companies in Sweden. The results in our study showed that the most occurring perspective reflecting the news articles related to honor issues is the cultural perspective. That is, the universal violence is not as observed in the same way in connection with these issues. Thereby, the honor-related violence differs from the general violence that media report; that is where one can see a pattern that differs and angles men’s universal violence against women. Aspects that are excluded when it comes to honer-related issues could contribute to a disordered image of the issue, but also exclude another important aspect of the social issue. The study has shown that mass medias production of honor is usually directly connected with the immigrant culture that is considered to promote violence; whereas the Swedish culture is considered to be associated with freedom and equality.

Over the last couple of years’ social media has come to have an influential role in our lives. With the broad use questions has raised if social media use can have negative effects. We have seen a recurrent tendency in media and society that encourage people to overlook their social media use and seen cases of people reducing their private social media use. The purpose of this study is to examine attitudes in young adults whom have taken a break from social media or reduced their usage. Furthermore, we wanted to distinguish what types of strategies they have used when they renounced from social media. With a qualitative approach we interviewed five young adults that had waived from social media during different periods of time due to negative usage experiences. We examined our empirical material along side with previous research on social media, Goffman’s impression management theory and Nanna Gillberg’s notion on Bourdieu’s forms of capital. We found that people tend to see the opportunity of impression control as something tedious and time consuming which had lead to a diminished use of social media. When tackle this aspect of social media, it came down to reducing your usage to an extent without having to compromise the possibility social media offers to keep in contact with friends.

This essay deals with how the Russian television has been treated by the Russian state and how this has affected the freedom of opinion in Russia. The essay focuses on the time between the first and second presidential election of president Putin (2000-2004). The Russian state has during this time been heavily criticised by many because of the increasing influence the government has over the Russian television. This essay tries to find out how this increasing state influence has affected the broadcasting companies and how this has influenced the newscasts. This essay also gives a historical overview of how the Russian television has changed since the Soviet Union’s downfall until today. Furthermore the TV-station NTV and its owners are examined as a special case of how the broadcasting companies are treated by the Russian government. The essay also shows how TV covered the presidential elections in 2000 and 2004 and how their coverage affected the election results. Finally the parts of the essay are brought together in a discussion about how the ownership of television influences the range of news and thereby its audience.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is a strategy that helps companies develop and manage their customer relationships. CRM helps the company with a better understanding of the customer and the customers needs. Through the growth of social media, traditional CRM has been further developed into social CRM, which gives the companies a new approach to being competitive in differ-ent media. The new type of relationship between company and costumer is two-way and it is the customer who owns the relationship. Companies can be active on different platforms to directly interact with existing or potential customers. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate SME´s expectations and results of social CRM. The purpose was achieved by answering the following questions: Which incentives are key for SME to accept social CRM? What are SME´s expectations on using social CRM? To what extent do SME use social CRM? And what results did SME achieve by using social CRM? The study was conducted through a semi-structured interview study. Four different SMEs from different industries participated in the study. Compilation of interview results is presented in tabular form and shows that SME seldom has set goals and desired values before working in social media, but theresults achieved are nevertheless in line with what the companies thought the work in social media would give. Thecompanies in the study feel that they have been able to follow the development and be where customers are.
I vilken grad använder SME social CRM?

The Internet has infiltrated our daily lives in many ways. Social networking on the Internet is a great example of how the Internet has expanded interpersonal communication. Many individuals have made social networking sites, like FaceBook and Twitter, an essential part of their lives and use these platforms to communicate daily. Until recently, young people have been the primary participants in this fast-growing phenomenon, and older adults' participation in the Internet, specifically social networking sites, has lagged far behind. However, in recent years, there has been a noteworthy increase in the number of older adult participants. The increase in older adult participation in social networking sites is important because it seems to signify a decrease in the Internet usage gap called the "digital divide", and because there is strong evidence older adults may greatly benefit from social networking activity. The aging of the Baby Boomers has resulted in significant growth in the senior age group, reinforcing the timely importance of considering the older adults' "digital divide". This study uses a phenomenological approach to explore the experience of older adult users of social networking sites to determine the reasons why more older adults are now making social networking sites part of their lives. The study revealed both negative and positive influences on this choice that include: early negative personal experiences with technology, positive family influences, an increasing prevalence of technology, and technology's transition from complexity of use to ease of use. Although some resulting attitudes of older adults are negative, such as a need to control the role of social media in their life, online social networking plays a positive role in their lives. The probing, detailed nature of this phenomenological study clarifies influences and offers new perspectives, implying that research could benefit from a broader and deeper inspection. Research should consider, as related to the use of technology by older adults, a closer look at the effectiveness of training, potential gender differences in the choice to use technology, and the consequences of negative technological experiences.

This essay is about the risks of reporting science through media. We have exemplified the problems with the alarm about acryl amide that came in 2002 through the diffusionist model. From the beginning it was a debate about how dangerous acryl amide is to us humans, but later on it developed to be a debate about whoever did wrong in the intermediation, because later on it came out that acryl amide maybe didn’t cause cancer at all and the scientists didn’t know how to prove if it did or didn’t. In our essay we have based our theories about how the diffiusionist model often is inadequate, with theorists as Stuart Allan, Anders Ekström and Dorothy Nelkin.

The general purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate the implications in regard to power, structure and control connected to the project Curators of Sweden. The study looks at nation branding through the use of social media. The idea with the project Curators of Sweden is to invite citizens to participate at the official Twitter platform to project a multi-faceted image of Sweden. Through granting citizens access to an official channel some power and control is relinquished. The empirical data is collected through ten semi-structured interviews with curators and stakeholders. In addition a netnography is conducted based on historic secondary data in the form of tweets from the @sweden Twitter account. The data is analyzed through qualitative content analysis with coding inspired by grounded theory. The thematic codes from the analysis of the Stakeholders and Curators are then compared in regard to concepts that could be related. The themes that emerge from the analysis of data generated from the interviews of stakeholders and curators include: invisible hand, asymmetry in relations, national identity, tied hands and crisis as defining moment, self-censorship, bias, empowerment, social control and self-establishing format. The findings suggest that in the context of building national identity through social media incidents prove both challenging and rewarding. The incidents test the project, attract a lot of attention and confirm the Swedish core values of progressivity. When inviting citizens to participate in creating the content a blurring of accountability is evident since ownership over channel and content is separated. The account becomes self-establishing when locus of control is unclear and no one has full ownership.

The general purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate how individuals today, in a societywhere people spend more and more time on social media, create and alter their identity throughimages. The study is focused on Instagram, the most widespread social media only focused onphotos. The study is based on a postmodern perspective and focuses on symbolic interactionism, identity capital and psychological self. The empirical data was collected through semi-structuredinterviews with fifteen Instagram users, most of who are from the Stockholm, Sweden region. Thestudy was influenced by the Grounded Theory method where emergent themes describing howindividuals alter and create their identity through images were deduced from the interviews. Thesethemes were: showing a nuanced image of themselves, images as a means of conveying identity forrecognition, imagification as personal branding tool and reflexive social interaction. The findings suggest that individuals show only a selected, a nuanced, part of their identity onInstagram and Instagram gives a greater freedom to express what people want to express as theiridentity and their self. By using photos in social media individuals are not as limited as they wouldotherwise be in the real world in terms of how they want to market their identity. But there is also afrustration among many users of Instagram and other social media as many feel that the nuancedand perfected image that many people convey is fake and annoying to see and this could thus havea negative impact on that person’s personal brand. Images were seen to be more efficient than textfor the purpose of personal branding and it also appeared that identity creation through imagescould create a more expressive society.

In the age of social media, many Black women use online platforms and social networks as a means of connecting with other Black women and to share their experiences of social oppression and misogynoir, anti-Black misogyny. Examining the ways that Black women use technology as a tool to actively wage resistance to racial, gender and class oppression is critical for understanding their role in the human struggle for greater peace, beauty, freedom and justice. This study explored the experiences of 12 Black women in the United States and Britain who use social media for storytelling and testimony about their lives as racial and gendered minorities. The research questions were: How do Black women in the United States and Britain use social media for storytelling and testimony about their lives as Black women? What is the lived experience of using social media for this purpose? How does the experience affect them and what meaning do they find in using social media for this purpose? Using an interpretative phenomenological approach, the researcher developed findings which show that Black women experience social media as an affirming, safe space for counter storytelling, education and transformation, negotiating identity and for connection to a larger, African diasporic identity. This research serves to increase the knowledge and scholarship about how Black women challenge damaging stereotypes and restrictive social narratives and how they use social media to challenge structural and ideological violence directed at them in an effort to promote dialogue and healing.

This degree project, Life cycle assessment of radio relay systems, was conducted at Telia AB, Telia Network Services AB, Farsta, and the section of Industrial Ecology of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a tool with which it is possible to calculate the environmental load from a product, material or service during all the phases in its life cycle. The results presented in this study are based on such an LCA. Radio relay is an alternative to optical fibre cables, but little information was available within Telia on the environmental impact from the use of radio relay systems as a transmission media. The goal of the project is to provide Telia with useful information regarding the systems involved and where and how the environment is affected by the use of the systems. Two types of radio links are looked at in this project: one high capacity, long hop radio link, and one low capacity radio link. The high capacity link is the Nera NL290, a Norwegian radio link system with an n+1 STM1 capacity. This system is of an older, bulky design. The second radio link in the study is the Ericsson Mini-link E. This radio link is one of the most common radio links on the market. Six scenarios, or cases, are the basis for the study: two Nera NL290 cases, two Mini-link E cases, and two optical fibre cable cases. For all systems, there is one worst case scenario, and one best case scenario. The best case scenarios are distinguished by having a higher capacity overall, and covers longer distances. The best case scenarios have the following properties - Product (distance between stations [km] (capacity [Mbps])): •Optical fibre cable (50 (2.5 Gbps)) •Nera NL290 radio link (50 km (310) •Ericsson Mini-link E radio link (30 ( 34 )) The worst case scenarios have the following properties: •Optical fibre cable (30 (155) •Nera NL290 radio link (30 (155 )) •Ericsson Mini-link E radio link (15 ( 42 )) Included in the study are production of materials constituting the systems, transports to and from building sites, manufacture of radio links, infrastructure, network elements, and station equipment. The results of the study are: •No clear difference can be seen between the use of radio links or buried optical fibre cables as a transmission media in regards to the environmental impact. •The environmental impact is mainly dependent on the capacity, and secondarily on the distance. •Optical fibre cables have one phase that is clearly more polluting than the res, and that is the actual work of burying the cable in the ground. •The Nera NL290 is a radio link system with a relatively high content of circuit boards in the construction. •For the Ericsson Mini-link E, there is no obvious phase that is more polluting than the rest, but the overall environmental load is high. •The operation, or use, of the different systems gives an almost negligible contribution to the total environmental load. Suggestions for improvement: •When planning new routes for optical fibre cables, the direction should be chosen so that as much as possible of the cable can be buried with ploughing. •For optical fibre cables, strive to build the cable together with other construction efforts. •Secure the cable installation for the long term. •For radio links, use existing infrastructure to as high degree as possible. •Build flexible systems that can handle additional capacity with upgrades. •When building new infrastructure for radio relay or mobile phone sites, endeavour to build the mast/tower on solid rock base. •The use of LED-type obstruction lights can

The impact of social media in tourism industry is significant. This study examines the role, impact, and relationship of social media platforms among second generation Iranian Swedish in Stockholm as a segment of tourism market when travelling to Iran. In addition, the purpose of this study is to explore if social media has a motivational role for diaspora tourism on second generation of immigrants’ trip to their origin country. The study uses content analysis and online questionnaire to collect data of 22 second generation Iranian diaspora who have traveled to Iran at least once during their lifetime. Three themes were identified from the collected qualitative answers based on the objectives of the research: Iranian diaspora motivations to visit homeland, feelings, and traveler experience by social media. Findings demonstrate the social media platforms are working as a motivation-pull factor influencing second generation immigrants to visit Iran, in much the same as other pull factors do. Also, the results show the User Generated Contents (UGC) such as travelers generated reliable travel information and introduction of new destinations can persuade second generation of diaspora immigrants to go back to their origin country for another visit. Finally, the findings of this research have revealed that two outcomes of trip to Iran by second generation of Iranian immigrants are Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) and visiting tourism attractions. Such outcomes can highly affect the diaspora members’ decisions in planning their travel to their origin country.

Media is a big part of our society and plays a major role in the socialization of young people. It sets the agenda for what’s important and newsworthy. In media coverage today crime and violence occupies a lot of the space. The evening press like Aftonbladet, Expressen and GT often use crime to sell their papers. The purpose of this study is to see what impact these crime reports have on high school students and how the education in the subject civic studiescould be designed from this point of view. In order to examine the reactions from the students concerning crime reports in the media I have applied the following questions: What does students state about their reaction to the crime reports in the evening papers? Which opinion do students have on media studies in civic studies? How can the media education be outlinedto meet the students needs? To answer the questions above I have conducted interviews with students and asked them what they think about evening papers and media in general. I started each interview by letting the student read an article from the evening paper Aftonbladet and then we discussed how heor she reacted to the article. It was a typical crime article from the evening papers which contained many of the ingredients that they usually have. Media professor Peter Dahlgren claims that crime articles in the evening papers follow a specific pattern that enables the reader to feel familiar with the contents of the text. During the interviews I also asked the students how they thought that the media education in civic studies should be conducted. The students had different opinions about the evening press. Some of them thought that it israther good and that they especially like the crime reports. Other students didn’t like those papers as much and thought that they were full of lies and exaggerations. The crime reports´ impact on the students however was pretty clear and some of them explained how this affected their everyday life. They all agreed that media education is important and that they wanted to learn more so they can interpret media in a way that enables them to tell what’s trueand what’s not.Key words: Evening papers, Media and Media education

For the last two decades, social media has grown and became a big part of the young voters’ daily life. The access to social media also brings new opportunities for participation in politics. With the increasing relationship between social media, young voters and politics, the purpose of this thesis is to research how social media influences young voters in a political context. With a qualitative proven method this study presents an analysis of eight interviews on a group of young voters in the age of 21-25. With the chosen research method, it requires the theories to be in the centre of the study. The existing theory being, framing theory and mediatization theory. This study concludes that the influences of social media is a complex issue with the relation between young voters, politics and media. In addition, the study shows that the young voters’ selection of content on their social platforms has the most impact on their political opinions.

Social media have become a bigger and bigger aspect of daily life for many ages and especially within the youth culture growing from digital interactions. At the same time libraries seems eager to use this medium to reach out to the youth to inform and to educate. But do we know enough about how these two groups’ views each other to be effective at this work? And is it even something that is wanted? What’s the image of social media from their point of view? The goal of this study is to investigate the image of social media from the point of view of two groups, librarians and youth. The study is based on a qualitative approach with a random selection of candidates. A semi-structured interview is the main method of collecting the data from these candidates, as it will give the best material matching the goal of the study. The paper has found that many of the candidates for the study, “even” though they think there will be a clear future for library use of social medias, still value the physical aspects of the library and more interactions face to face. In fact many of them think one can lose parts of what makes libraries and the library space so appreciated by youth, if they put too much of their resources into a digital format. However the results in this paper have been based on a sample study of a smaller group of candidates and so are in no way onclusive for the majority of the people within these two groups. Hopefully this study will nspire future studies into the interactions between these groups.

What were the main goals in Navalny’s political agenda and how did this influence his rhetorical approach? This paper explores how Navalny and his aspirants were disqualified as political candidates in Russian elections, and how this affected his approach to being focused on contentious politics as it became the only viable means to push for political change in the country. Two of his most viral videos are analysed to investigate the rhetorical strategies he used to set frames on the political elite, and the main answers revolved around corruption, theft, and the self-image of Medvedev and Putin. Although there were clear similarities between the two videos, the most recent “Palace for Putin” displayed new and more moral, judgmental and offensive methods than the previous “He is not Dimon to you”. Furthermore, this paper investigates the large-scale protests of 2021 and how public opinion about Navalny has developed in Russia. The expectation was that public opinion would be more favourable in recent times than it has been in the past, largely due to the massive protests which he managed to spark. However, the answer was surprisingly the opposite, as statistics tilted slightly against him rather than the other way around. Part of the explanation to this was that the highest number of people who disapproved of Navalny used state television as their main source of information, as opposed to the majority of the younger population who frequently used the internet, and thereby had a more positive view of him. When examining the protest trajectories, it was possible to find elements of Navalny’s political message amongst the people in terms of keywords and phrases that they chanted, evidence of his success above the fact of the protests themselves. The final aim was to review how the authoritarian regime responded to Navalny’s contentious politics, and in this regard, it was concluded that both domestic and international pressure moved the regime to increasingly repressive measures against Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation and further deteriorated the relationship between the EU and Russia.

The aim of this study is to go into depth and analyze the identity ”immigrant” (invandrare) and how it is constituted in Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet and Sydsvenska Dagbladet. An investigation (SOU 2006:21) by Swedish authorities concludes that immigrants are portrayed in an unfavorable way in Swedish media, whilst Gunnar Sandelin in a debate article in Sweden’s biggest morning newspaper (Dagens Nyheter) meant that Swedish media lies about immigrants, creating an image of them that is too favorable that is not in touch with reality. This gives this thesis momentum to further investigate the identity immigrants are given in Swedish media.

The theory and method used in this thesis is Laclau’s and Mouffe’s discourse theory. Discourse theory is well suited for revealing a certain group’s identity using chains of equivalence or chains of analogy. The discourse theory is sprung out of Marxist ideologies, especially Gramsci’s theories. Social antagonism, hegemony and identity are key concepts in discourse theory.

The study shows that the word ”immigrant” only appears in articles that concern different problems in the society. No articles underlining the positive aspects of immigrants were found in the study and none of the journalists identified themselves as an immigrant. The newspapers in this study labels individuals ”immigrant” if they are in need of resources and help from the Swedish society. Immigrants were also not able to constitute their own identity though the constituting power was in the hands of the Swedish morning press.

The purpose of this study was to explore and expose racial stereotypes of African Americans in the mass media. The research was conducted as a historical analysis using historical artifacts from as early as 1619. These historical artifacts include journal articles, books, websites, research papers, and films that are both explanation pieces and examples of black stereotypes. All of the historical artifacts were found through Internet search engines and article databases including the University of the Pacific's library database. Other materials given to pinpoint information for this study were also given by University of the Pacific professors. All of the information was examined and synthesized into this study. In order to expose and uncover past and contemporary African American stereotypes, the historical information collected for this study was organized. The results revealed three categories: (1) the initial stereotypes that blackface created, (2) the extent to which initial racial stereotypes affect today's status of African American depictions and, (3) the occurrences of blackface in today's contemporary media. This historical analysis provides a rich background to past stereotypes of African Americans as well as develops a framework for critiquing the status of black stereotypes in today's contemporary media. The analysis of the historical artifacts found that the initial depiction of blackface (one of the original forms of African American stereotypes) is not necessarily a thing of the past. In addition this study concluded that the initial stereotypes of African Americans have not only influenced the African American depictions of today but also that in many ways the portrayals are the same and just “packaged” differently.

The aim of this study was to examine the representation over time of the Swedish social service in the national daily press. More specifically, its aim was to compare the years 1997, 2007 and 2017 and examine any differences and patterns in the reporting due to social changes in society. As this study was based on quantitative content analysis, all articles published in four of the largest national papers during those years, containing the word ”socialtjänsten” [the social service] were read. A code schedule with six themes were made to be used when reading the articles. The themes were: 1) Name of the newspaper. 2) Year of publication. 3) Character of article; news or editorial. 4) Field of social service; e.g. ’child welfare’. 5) Level of analysis; micro, meso or macro. 6) Rating of the social service; positive, negative or neutral. The analysis was based on three media theories; agenda setting, news valuation and framing. As a conclusion the valuation of the social service seems to be pretty much the same over the years; almost two of five articles has a negative valuation of the social service and three of five articles has a neutral valuation of the social service. In relation to that approximately two of one hundred articles has a positive valuation of the social service. Editorial material tends to valuate the social service more negative than news material. The level of analysis seems to have changed to fewer articles on a micro-level in 2017 than in 1997. The five most common fields associated with the social service are youth criminality, child welfare, social service as an organisation, economic aid and migration.

A number of theories suggest that participatory arts based approaches have the potential to contribute to development and social change. However, the nature of participation and participative approaches is multi-layered and complex, and critics have voiced concern for depicting participatory art initiatives in an oversimplified, uncriticised positivistic manner. The danger of such assumptions lay in the risk of manipulation, where non-genuine participation could contribute to the reinforcement of oppressive power structures and the dominating hegemony. This study explores the intersection of art, participation and development, and further aims to discuss the process of identifying the emancipatory possibilities and limitations of participatory art for development and social change. Using a combination of a constructivist case study approach and critical discourse analysis, two participatory art organisations are analysed with the intention to define each organisations’ understanding of the nature of participatory art, and further how this is reflected in the implementation of their work. The findings suggest that both organisations, to a certain degree, communicate an understanding of participation that reflect previous theories on genuine participation. Additionally, the findings suggest that this understanding is reflected in the practical work of the organisations.

Little is known about health care professionals' perceptions of eating disorder etiology among African American (AA) women. The purpose of this quantitative research study was to examine the associations among health care professionals' race, cultural awareness, and perceptions of media influence on eating disorder-related factors in AA women. Festigner's social comparison theory; Bandura's social learning theory; and Garcia, Cartwright, Winston, and Borzuchowska's transcultural integrative model served as the theoretical frameworks for this study. Specifically, this study examined whether race and cultural awareness of health care professionals relate to their perceptions of the extent to which media influences AA women's eating disorders, and whether cultural awareness moderates the association between their race and media influences. Data were obtained through a researcher-created demographic questionnaire, the Multicultural Counseling Inventory, and a modified Sociocultural Attitudes Toward Appearance Scale-3 with a purposive sample of 49 participants. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Spearman's Rho correlation, Pearson correlation, and a hierarchical multiple linear regression. Compared to their Caucasian American counterparts, AA health care professionals perceived greater media pressure on AA women's body image concerns. Additionally, participants' cultural awareness was positively correlated with their ratings of AA women's desire to have more athletic bodies. The implications for positive social change stemming from this study are directed at health care professionals as additional training may increase their awareness, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of eating disorders among AA women.

We live in an increasingly digitised world in which the use of social media has grown rapidly. By 2016, 94% of all in between the ages of 15-24 and 84% of all in between the ages of 25-44 used social media daily in Sweden (Nordicom, 2017). This study seeks to problematise the constant connection to social media and investigate how the connection to social media affect stress levels in young adult’s daily lives and how they deal with the stress. Furthermore, the purpose is to contribute empirically to the impact digitisation has on society. To find out, we aim to answer the following two research questions: Are young adult social media users experiencing information stress and are there any potential causes? Does young adult, who frequently use social media, have any possible strategies for managing information stress? Theories used in this essay are self-determining theory, Fear of missing out (FoMO) and Situational non-use theory. The essay is a quantitative deductive study that collected empirical data through a web based survey. In order to measure information stress, an index has been created consisting of three variables: Feeling unable to handle the information flow, fear of missing updates and distraction in everyday life. In short, the majority of the participants in the survey experienced what we consider to be a high form of information stress in their daily lives. The increased digitisation and the ability to stay connected and contactable via mobile devices, according to the study, affect the high end users of social media so that they feel increased stress and discomfort in their everyday life.

The purpose of this Master`s thesis is to examine if the pur-chase of media in public libraries reflects the library's role in society. Two questions have been posed: • What view of public library's role in society is reflected in the purchase of media? • What principles guide the selection of media in public li-braries in Sweden? In order to investigate these questions, we used a question-naire that we sent out to a sample of 120 public libraries in Sweden. The analysis is based on a theory of three ap-proaches to the role of the library developed by Douglas Raber. The three approaches are the conservative approach, the populist approach and the social approach. The results of the survey show that all three approaches are represented in varying degrees and priorities are usually expressed in and guided by library plans. User demands are the central basis for the libraries purchases. Children and young people are the largest groups of users in libraries and are generally the priority of library plans.

This thesis deals with the subject of safety and perspectives of it from inside and outside the area we have examined. The subject is examined through a case study in a “miljonprogramsområde” in Ljungdala, Hässleholm. We have analyzed and discussed the issue of safety in relation to segregation, stigmatization and the power of media. To support the case study, we interviewed residents in the “miljonprogramsområde” and analyzed articles published in newspapers concerning the area and its safety. We have noticed that a question about security is vital in today's urban planning and that it is also discussed lively by the population as it greatly affects their everyday lives. We believe that a reputation of an area can stigmatize it and that may result in other effects as well. Rumors that do not reflect reality are something that often occur and specifically regarding segregated “miljonprogramsområden”. The aim of the thesis was to investigate how safety is perceived in the area from within and externally, thus from residents in the area and from the media. The study shows that there are remarkable differences in the perception of safety. The residents consider the area as incorrectly perceived and points out that there are rumors that are not correct. The media highlights safety issues in the area and indicates where the problems are rooted. Thus, it exists distinguished perceptions of the area.

Ågren, Axel. "Loneliness among older people in the Swedish media : Constructions, discourses and the designation of responsibility". Licentiate thesis, Linköpings universitet, Avdelningen Åldrande och social förändring, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-153333.

Feelings of belonging or not belonging to other people are commonly seen as an essential and universal part of human existence. How loneliness is talked about and understood is, however, found to differ depending on historical, cultural and societal contexts. Today, there are intense discussions on loneliness among older people in the Swedish news-press. Constructions within mass media and - in this licentiate thesis - news-press are found to have a significant influence on how older people evaluate their own life and how older people are treated by the surrounding society. Research with this focus is, however, scarce despite the large amount of studies on loneliness and despite research on constructions of older people within mass media being a frequently addressed issue for ageing research. The aim of this thesis is to explore how loneliness among older people is constructed and how the responsibility for reducing loneliness is designated within the Swedish news-press. In Paper 1 the empirical material consisted of 94 news-press articles from the years 2013-2014. The prime finding was that loneliness was not the main focus in the articles from the Swedish news-press. The concept was used more to motivate the need for political change, enhancing the importance of volunteer work and described as a risk factor within research reports. The material analysed in Paper 2 consisted of 40 news-press articles from October 2016. The responsibility for reducing loneliness among older people was found to be designated between welfare state institutions on different levels. Institutions and political parties both defend the planned or performed measures to reduce loneliness, but also admit to not doing enough in this regard. Older people were found to be constructed as recipients of activities for reducing loneliness, and the “we” in “society” were those who should perform activities in order to reduce loneliness among older people. The main overall finding of the thesis is that loneliness was not the main focus in the articles from Swedish news-press. Instead, loneliness was used as a motive for political change and to enhance the value of volunteer work. Furthermore, loneliness among older people is understood as a problem that needs to be solved. The contexts and logics of the mass media were found to have an influence on how loneliness among older people was constructed, as the issue was mainly addressed in local debate articles with ambitions of achieving change.

The overall aim of this study was to investigate what common trends are within the communication of acts of terror towards the public within the Nordic countries. This was done by positioning the portrayal of terrorism within the theory of framing by Entman (1993) and the model of framing terrorism by Norris, Kern and Just (2003), which provided the following sub-topics to analyze during the research in regards to terrorism: (1) problem definitions, (2) diagnoses, (3) moral evaluations, (4) treatment recommendations, and (5) political messages. The method was based on quantitative content analysis, which made use of physical, categorical, and thematic distinctions surrounding the framing of terrorism. The sample size consisted out of 138 articles which were analyzed based on these distinctions. The included articles originated from the following online editorials of publisher The Local: The Local Denmark, The Local Sweden, and The Local Norway. Results indicated an overall more objective approach from the tabloid in regards to terrorism, meaning that mostly only facts were provided but no political messages. Biases within the articles were not directly found, though a focus on male and Muslim perpetrators in regards to acts of terror was apparent. Conclusions surrounding the analysis include that the editorials generally appear to be protecting the public by not mentioning too many details surrounding acts of terror. The editorials also seemingly contribute to the avoidance of radicalizing potential actors in regards to acts of terror by leaving out details such as diagnoses and moral evaluations. The editorials were furthermore found to hold an objective tone and did not subject to sensationalism.
