History of Science and Technology (HST) courses are increasingly becoming part of core curriculums for undergraduate students due to an increased emphasis on scientific literacy. HST courses should aim to help students gain an understanding of the nature of science and should enable them to reflect epistemologically. The authors suggest teaching HST courses through several interchangeable content blocks, and herein, present the material and discussion topics that they believe should be implemented in a content block on cognitive sciences through a linguistic component. Language has a special meaning for humankind as it indicates its unique ability in the evolutionary development and in creating a new social environment. Therefore, paying special attention to the linguistic component when teaching HST courses helps students obtain a basic level of linguistic knowledge as its interdisciplinary approaches are increased through the study of cognitive sciences such as evolutionary psychology, behavioral genetics, and artificial intelligence. In order to represent a practical meaning of linguistics in the processes of constructing social environment, the authors conducted an empirical study based on the analysis of media texts. We asked 63 sophomores majoring in social sciences and humanities, who are affiliated with the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia and the Moscow State Institute of International Relations to choose 60 media texts, both broadsheets and tabloids, on social and political content. Estimating and analyzing the surveys allowed the authors to determine students’ abilities to identify communicative strategies that were used in the media texts, to understand the role of the strategies in forming the social environment of a person or a group, and to recognize how using the tools of cognitive linguistics enhances sophisticated thinking and develops synergetic perceptions of every individual.

Education has always been socially conditioned. On the one hand, everything that happens in society necessarily reflects on the education process, and on the other hand, all changes in education cause changes in society. Baština journal, which used to be published by the Institute for the Study of Culture of Serbs, Montenegrins, Croats and Muslims in Priština from 1991 to 1997, and by the Institute for Serbian Culture in Priština since 1998, which has now been based in Leposavić since 1999, publishes papers in the field of social and humanistic sciences. These papers most often discuss topics in the field of Literature, History, History of Culture, Ethnology, Political Science and Sociology, and occasionally in the field of Ethnomusicology, Demography, Archeology, Art, Art History, Language, Literature and Aesthetics, while one journal issue published a special topic - Vladeta Vuković's Works. The journal has so far also included Discussions and Review, Chronicles and Composition. In this paper, the coauthors investigate the representation of education-related topics, as well as the character, scope and intensity of these topics in the Baština Journal from the first edition in 1991 to the latest edition in 2020. A retrospective study of scientific and professional papers showed that a total of 63 papers were published that directly and indirectly study education, primarily in the field of the history of pedagogy, general pedagogical topics and other education-related issues. These topics were mostly published within the History of Culture pillar. As a separate topic, Education was present only in two issues in 2007 and in one issue in 2009 and in the last two issues in 2020 within the Pedagogy course.

Editor’s Note: Susan Kellogg’s article on anthropology and history continues our special series “History and the Other Social Sciences.” There will be one further article, by David Robertson, on political science and history. An expanded version of the whole series will then be published as a book by Duke University Press. The past, once considered the exclusive domain of historians and antiquarians, has increasingly been embraced by anthropologists. Today, it is difficult to find a major anthropological study that does not claim to offer a diachronic, processual, historical analysis. In examining 10 years of historical anthropological writing, I cover three broad topics in this essay. First, I explain the emergence of a more historical anthropology as a widespread response to a crisis in the conceptualization of culture. Second, I argue that while there are certain identifiable themes that cut across this literature, in general, it reflects long-standing topical interests within anthropology; I review this literature according to these topics rather than divide it into interpretive or cultural studies versus studies of political economy. Third, I try to assess this body of work critically. I concentrate here on anthropological history as both research and textual practice, as well as briefly examine anthropological uses of the concepts of time, colonialism, and structure and agency.

AbstractThis introduction presents the main topics and analytical concerns of the contributions to this Special Issue about ethnicity and migration in coalfield history in a global perspective. From the nineteenth century the development of industrial and transport technologies required the supply of coal-based energy in every part of the world. Nineteenth- and early twentieth-century globalization, including colonialism, would not have been possible without coal. Coalmining operations were launched in all world regions, and to enable exploitation mine operators had to find, mobilize, and direct workers to the mining sites. This quest for labour triggered a series of migration processes (both from nearby and far away) and resulted in a broad array of labour relations (both free and unfree). This introduction points to the variety of constellations analysed in the different contributions to this Special Issue. These cover cases from Africa (Nigeria, Zimbabwe), Asia (China, Japan), the Americas (USA, Brazil), Turkey, the Soviet Union, and western Europe (France, Germany), and a broad range of topics, from segregation, forced labour, and subcontracting to labour struggles, discrimination, ethnic paternalism, and sport.

The problem of interaction between man and nature throughout history is, relatively, rarely addressed by classical historiography. The session entitled Man and Nature: Between destruction and creation, organized and chaired by Prof. Tadeusz Janicki (Faculty of History, UAM, Poznań, Poland) and Prof. Dariusz J. Gwiazdowicz (Department of Forest Protection, Poznań University of Life Sciences, Poland) on 24 August 2022 as part of the XXIII International Congress of Historical Sciences Poznań 2022, was an attempt to change this tendency and broaden the existing research perspective. The papers delivered during the occassion were the starting point for the preparation of a special issue of the journal Studia Historiae Oeconomicae (SHO), the primary purpose of which is interdisciplinary reflection by specialists from various scientific disciplines on the problem of destruction of natural landscapes and creation of cultural landscapes, along with other issues concerning the interaction between humans and the natural environment from prehistoric times to the present. This special issue of SHO consists of seven articles on diverse topics, analysing human interactions with nature through different historical periods, meanwhile taking into account their economic, civil, social and climatic conditions. The result is a multifaceted mosaic of topics that constitutes an original and interdisciplinary analysis of man’s relationship with nature, which may be a source of inspiration for readers and perhaps further research in this field.

Abstract Design historians generally avoid extended self-reflection or discussion of how they conduct research. Typically, they use historical research methods, yet design historians have also used methods borrowed from art history, cultural and literary studies, anthropology, sociology or other social sciences. This Virtual Special Issue, comprising articles drawn from past issues of the Journal of Design History, addresses the state of design history’s methodology. While few authors in the Journal have focused specifically on the topic of methodology, their implicit adoption of an eclectic variety of research methods over the past thirty years is revealing. This Introduction seeks to contextualize a collection of twelve articles within a brief overview of methodologies in history, art history and design history. The articles are then linked to scholarship beyond the Journal of Design History, and the final section presents additional methodological possibilities for design historians.

AbstractThe role of women as mineworkers and as household workers has been erased. Here, we challenge the masculinity associated with the mines, taking a longer-term and a global labour history perspective. We foreground the importance of women as mineworkers in different parts of the world since the early modern period and analyse the changes introduced in coal mining in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, the masculinization and mechanization, and the growing importance of women in contemporary artisanal and small-scale mining. The effect of protective laws and the exclusion of women from underground tasks was to restrict women's work more to the household, which played a pivotal role in mining communities but is insufficiently recognized. This process of “de-labourization” of women's work was closely connected with the distinction between productive and unproductive labour. This introductory article therefore centres on the important work carried out in the household by women and children. Finally, we present the three articles in this Special Theme and discuss how each of them is in dialogue with the topics addressed here. Introduction. The social integration of complex technologies is constantly accompanied by the mythologization of innovations and the creation of special discourses that function on the basis of secondary semiotic systems. Traditionally, the trend is associated with philistine (user) discursive practices. The hypothesis of the study is that mythologization is a complex process that takes place not only within the boundaries of non-professional communities, but also in the scientific world. Theoretical analysis. The technological mythology originated in the West in the context of the social sciences and has a predominantly empirical research background. Today several variations of the conceptualization of mythology in relation to technologies have been developed, which need to be significantly supplemented and refined. Empirical analysis. The general research method is the content analysis of the Scopus scientific database in the field of social sciences. The focus was on the topic of artificial intelligence as the main convergent technology. The reference base includes scientific papers for the decade (2010–2020), united by the theme, the subject and keywords. Conclusion. Research practices in the field of artificial intelligence have almost 60 years of history, which allows us to compare the results of analytics in the future, identify genetic patterns and features of scientific discourse, contrast the results of the analysis of Western content and Russian one, by identifying key discursive specifications.

This paper examines some aspects of the institutional history of post-war Romanian philosophy, with a special focus on the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of People’s Republic of Romania. The aim of this article is to shed more light on the main aspects of philosophical research during cultural Stalinism, and to underline the inflexion points within Romanian “philosophical” writings between 1948 and 1965. I examined the lack of human resources and its impact on the emergence of Marxist-Leninist philosophy, as well as the main research topics studied at the Philosophy Section of the Institute of History and Philosophy and Institute of Philosophy especially in the 1950s. I focused also on the context of unmasking and purging of the “philosophical” front mainly in late 1950s, underlining the Agitprop fight against Revisionism and “bourgeois” influence in social sciences. The avatars of the philosophical field are analysed through the lens of professor’s Constantin Ionescu Gulian’s destiny as an important manager of the institutions producing philosophy during the aforementioned period.

Cross, Will. "Homophobic bullying in secondary schools : a cross age and gender analysis into young people's views of name-calling". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2013. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4420/.

Resumo:
Research pertaining to homophobic name-calling has largely focused on prevalence rates and the negative long-term effects on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual (LGB) populations without considering the intention behind the use of the language, leading to an assumption the language used in these incidents is intentionally homophobic. This small-scale exploratory study focused on gathering the cross age and gender perspectives of male and female young people in years 7 (age 11-12) and 10 (age 14-15) from one secondary school, to illuminate whether they perceive name-calling, involving the word ‘gay’ to be bullying, harmful and intentionally homophobic. The study adopted a qualitative approach to research methodology to gain a richer understanding of young people’s perspectives, where single–sex focus groups were used to collect qualitative data, which were analysed through thematic analysis. Key findings from the study suggest there is agreement over age and between genders that using the word ‘gay’ is not intentionally homophobic or harmful. The study also highlights that the intent of the language is complex and dependent upon a number of factors including: the relationship between the user and receiver; whether they are friends or not and how the words are said. The language can be used as a form of joking, social bonding, expressing opinions and perceived as a common discourse amongst young people where there is no associated implication to sexuality. Further implications for anti-bullying and Educational Psychology practice are discussed, with a focus on developing an understanding of the use and intent of name-calling in schools at systemic and socio-cultural levels.

Linguistics is the research based study of language and its structure which includes sounds, words, grammar, meaning and context. It plays a crucial role in research across various disciplines due to its adaptable and cross-disciplinary nature. It is important in research because language is a fundamental aspect of human communication and linguistics helps us grasp how humans make use of language, how they convey their thoughts and emotions and put them into words. It is also about how language is acquired through language acquisition device i.e. LAD, present in human mind. It was proposed by Noam Chomsky, a prominent linguist. Through LAD present in children, they effortlessly learn the grammar of any language, they are exposed to during their early development stage. Research in linguistics contributes to our understanding of cognitive processes, their way of perceiving and problem solving. Linguistic research contributes to our understanding of cognitive processes. Cognitive process deals with human perception, thinking and learning. Linguistics is crucial in the development of natural language processing NLP technologies and machine learning algorithms. Sociolinguist explores the relationship between language and social factors, like ethnicity, gender, social class and identity. It will shed light on language variation and the ways in which people use language to express their social identity. Daniel Jones was a prominent British phonetician who made significant contributions in the field of phonetics. He is known for his work on the description and analysis of speech sounds and their articulation. Phonetics delves with how humans produce and perceive sounds. Daniel Jones was a Phonetic professor at University College London and is remembered as “The Father of Phonetics.” Overall linguistics is essential in various research fields as it provides a deeper understanding of human language and its impact on the society. Its interdisciplinary nature allows it to intersect with numerous disciplines, making it a valuable tool for researchers seeking to explore the intricacies of language and its significance in our lives. Phonetics is the subfield of linguistics that deals with the study of speech sounds. It throws light on the physical properties of sounds and how they are produced, perceived and transmitted in human language. “Standard Indian English" refers to a variety of English that is spoken in India and conforms to certain linguistic norms and standards. English is one of the many languages spoken in India due to the country's colonial history under British rule, and it has developed into a distinct form known as Indian English. Phonetics is essential in understanding the sounds that make up languages and how they are used in communication. This study draws the attention of the reader towards the fields of phonetics which are essential and dominant for a linguistic to understand and work upon.

The Nigerian military, that is, the Army, Air Force and the Navy is an integral part of the nation’s history long even before independence in 1960 (maintaining law and order against internal and external aggressors. Military security activities became more prominent with Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. New forms of threats began to emerge requiring superior firepower to suppress them. In all these, the media has worked closely with the military. Extant literature has shown that public confidence over the military’s capacity to maintain law and order, as well as enhance democratic governance could increase or decrease as a result of the direction of media reportage. This study, examined media’s access to Special Military Operations (SMOs) information for news content development from January to December, 2022. Four newspapers (Vanguard, The Punch, The Nation and Premium Times) were purposely selected due to their national coverage. A total of three hundred and eighty-eight (388) stories were reviewed from the selected newspapers. Two theories, that is, the social responsibility and agenda- setting theories underpinned this study. As qualitative study, content analysis was deployed to analyse the selected stories via the frequency (attention), sources, tone (direction) and depth. Findings revealed that the media had limited access to information on the SMOs; the military had strict control of the contents the media could access. More so, the study found that because the media sometimes slanted the SMOs stories in favour of the military. Therefore, the study concluded that the selected national dailies, in terms of the reportage of the SMOs from January to December 2022 could not be said to be performing the ‘watchdog’ responsibility. Rather, their SMO stories were ‘serving’ the military interests. Among other things, this study advocates that the Nigerian media finetune their ‘investigative’ and ‘watchdog’ responsibility to present SMOs and other military activities on a balanced pendulum in order to increase the public confidence on their mandates.

Cartoons are a special type of communication that allows for the subliminal delivery of messages while also producing humour without offending anyone. The drawings can express a reality that is both bitter and sweet without using words. A cartoon is made up of several components, signs, or symbols that have a certain meaning. To recognize that a semiotics analysis was done. Cartoons on current hot topics throughout the data collecting period were analyzed using Ferdinand de Saussure's model. Press cartoons may be created on any type of topic, including political and social ones. Cartoons can depict local, regional, national, or even international issues depending on where they are drawn. However, the majority of the cartoons in the three chosen newspapers—The Indian Express, The Hindu, and Times of India—were drawn on national concerns. The study also includes the frequency of cartoons published during the three months of data collection which simultaneously describes how much importance is given to cartoons by the particular Indian English newspaper under the study. The highest number of cartoons were published by the Times of India. Whereas, The Hindu newspaper has the lowest frequency of cartoons comparatively. The Indian Express newspaper has significant consistency in publishing cartoons. Overall, this study emphasizes how cartoons are portrayed differently on a common issue by each selected Indian English dailies and what the signs, symbols or elements used by cartoonists to convey the message., It also describes the frequency at which cartoons are published and what level of issues are focused on majorly by the cartoonists or newspapers

The topic of research in the shoah is full of skeletons in general, whether it is popular or Indian; A thousand, the results of each work differ from the history of the seven, as a change in the history of the work, because there will be a group of people that represents its basic mission that it is witnessing. As a curriculum in terms of a scientific study of the basics of utilitarian work, as well as a complete independence, to be a special work in the science of methods, the living thing differs from the other, the living is sufficient as a machine for the marriage of the privatized languages. Like Al-Hajji on the problem of the method in the Indian world, it is considered a reference to the history of the Great Depression, notwithstanding during the famine and its social effects, which constituted a prominent decade in the history of the Great Nineties, especially before the Shiza and Ba’ja. Refusal to scrutinize the emotional reactions of the group, such as overcoming the emergence of ideas, constitutes a mental obstacle to the psychological distress in the private sphere, as well as through the use of loud, practical emotions. Like a stinging bear, the Indian uncle was looking for a peculiar squabble of her own that belonged to the stinging stinger, like a humping bear, what he shouted at him in his book 'Al-Kawasat as Things', that the slandered in the nugget of al-Khunaj was like a jerk; Because it is a subject of disintegration, so that the uncleanness of the Indian uncle cannot live during the opening of the hole. Thus, the sigmoid form in the indica is suffocated, and it refers to the living lump of the lungs. It is sufficient for the vas deferens in the labors, and the resuscitation spurs in the normal labors of the newborn to the age of puberty. Introspective, and the second is to try to reveal the brain. Yeh; In both cases, the exclusions were different from the first case of the larval condition, and the course of the endosperm differed as a chicken in the presence of a wrinkled one, and in the second case, the exudate was transferred to the lesion of patches of any lobe, or a second gastrocnemius, or something like the extraction of a soybean

The crisis at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries affected different countries and different aspects of social life, which was inevitable both due to geographical proximity and cultural, economic, political and other intersections. Addressing the topic of the sociocultural crisis was characteristic of both Russian and Western European philosophers of the early 20th century. The author in the article refers to the understanding of its features and ways to overcome it in the context of the ideas of Russian religious philosophers. An integral feature of Russian philosophical thought in the context of assessing the ongoing social changes and the search for ways out of a crisis situation is an understanding of the special purpose of Russia and an awareness of its role in human history. The works of Russian philosophers are full of anxiety about the future of mankind, about the fate of Russia, a premonition of possible death, therefore it is no coincidence that the appeal to the theme of the Apocalypse, the impending catastrophe, the end of history is perceived as a real threat to the existence of mankind. With all the diversity of approaches to assessing the sociocultural crisis, Russian thinkers are united by common philosophical roots, religion, national and cultural traditions. In the context of understanding the crisis processes of the early twentieth century, Russian religious thinkers raise the question of the role and significance of a person in the transformation of life, thereby actualizing the moral and anthropological problems.

Anthropocentric museums are “an important place in public debate, creation and questioning ideas” because they can have a positive impact on the lives of underprivileged or marginalized people. They can also strengthen specific communities and contribute to the creation of fairer societies. The science of Museology together with the science of Special Education and Training (SET) support with the Targeted Individual Structured and Integrated Program for Students with Special Educational needs (TISIPfSEN), in children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SENDs). The purpose of this work was to study museology applications in accordance with the pedagogical tool TISIPfSEN. The main working hypothesis explored access to theatre and entertainment events, museums and archaeological sites of people with SENDs, which is not always an easy process given that they are a heterogeneous group due to their inherent or acquired specificity. The applications also drew pedagogical materials through the charm of the art of theatre and puppetry. In this context, performances were given free of charge through the Kalamata Experimental Stage to children and young people with SENDs, in the city of Kalamata and Sparta. This project led to voluntary application from students of department of history of University of Peloponnese. The results showed that people’s disability does not always mean impotence. Accessibility to museum programs and theatrical events in modern organized societies is possible. The learning process becomes accessible with the pedagogical tool TISIPfSEN to people with special needs. Necessary conditions, knowledge in the SET and the necessary training of all according to universal design. In conclusion, TISIPfSEN museum pedagogical programs facilitate different social groups in approaching, understanding the differential material culture, with alternative forms of communication and learning, given that heterogeneity in nature is a universal phenomenon.

The article examines the linguistic particularities of defense in judicial rhetoric that have not considerably changed since Antiquity. As at present the interest in judicial rhetoric has increased, it is necessary to carry out its comprehensive analysis with the consideration of its modern modifications. In the course of history, judicial rhetoric has preserved its main rules to be used in Modern Times by Western culture advocates for defense purposes. Special attention is paid to stylistic devices, phonetic means and linguistic features to discern that are most frequently used by the advocates in their defense speeches. As stylistic devices are the best means of persuasion of the jurors and public in court, they are indispensable in advocates’ defense speeches and are the focus of the given paper. As the advocates’ defense speeches concentrate mainly on persuasion and thus with emotions rather than reason the author focuses on the expressive language means.

The present research deals with the publication “Kharkiv calendar” as one of the specific sources of local history. It should be rightfully attributed as a separate type of periodicals – “statistical-information collection”. Similar publications were spread in almost all regions of the Russian Empire in the 19th and early 20th centuries and were named “calendars” or “memorable books”. They have their own specifics and therefore need special approach for their study. According to his own experience, the author presents certain directions of investigation of these sources. It may be suggested the following steps of work with them: identifying of the specificity and transformations of the structure of these sources (separation of traditional and novel rubrics); analysis of balance between local, all-imperial and worldwide data (there was dynamics of this information); classification of scientific and popular-science materials; periodization of functioning of periodicals; focus on specificity of gathering of statistical information that had published in these collections.

The history of mankind demonstrates that the most difficult task has always been and remains the maintenance of society and social life in an orderly, balanced and dynamic state of optimal viability. The depressing regularity of social cataclysms, wars, crises and local conflicts convincingly testifies to the extreme complexity of this task. This complexity, however, does not negate the need and importance of scientific support for specific modern forms of violence and the development of new theoretical and empirical approaches to their research. The purpose of this article is to enrich, and, perhaps, even deepen, the modern understanding of the of new wars by means of detailed characterization of the aggressor's behavioral aberration within the analytical optics developed on the basis of such cruel and violent actions as terrorism. The methodology of the given study bases on the principle of historicism allowing to consider the war in its development in space and time. Using the method of situational analysis at the example of Russian aggression against Ukraine, this study managed to avoid the gap between theory and practice. As well the article contains a researchanalytic review of the body of scientific literature, aimed at outlining the paradigmatic framework for conceptualizing the phenomenon of new wars. While conducting the research it was found that the behavior of the aggressor in the conditions of the new war has a clearly expressed terrorism determinism, which qualitatively transforms the nature and methods of war. Within the analysis of the changing the war process format which is now based on the logic of terrorism, the studys main emphasis is placed on two forms of terrorism - state terrorism and information terrorism. Reconstructing the course of the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2022, it was found that the attribute characteristic of this war is the combination of two aforementioned forms of terrorism. This article contains topics and provisions that may cause discussion. Nevertheless, it allows to go beyond the traditional discourse of security, provoking the exit of scientific research to a qualitatively new level of theoretical reflection of the modern security challenges emanation.

"Throughout the second half of the seventeen and the eighteenth centuries, tea remained an expensive exotic drink for Britain that “preserved” its overseas nature. It was only in the Victorian era (1837-1903) that tea became the English national drink. The process attracts the attention of academics from various humanities. Despite an impressive amount of research in the UK, in Russia for a long time (in the Soviet years) the English tradition of tea drinking was considered a philistine curiosity unworthy of academic analysis. Accordingly, the English tea party in Russia has become a leader in the number of stereotypes. The issue became important for academics only at the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Currently, we can observe significant growth of interest in this area in Russia and an expansion of research into tea drinking with regard to the history of society, philosophy and culture. Despite this fact, there are still serious lacunas in the research of English tea parties in the Victorian era. One of them is related to the analysis of visualization of this practice in Victorian painting. It is a proven fact that tea parties are one of the most popular topics in English arts of the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries. No other art school in the world referred to the topic so frequently: painting formed the visual image of the English tea party, consolidated, propagandized and spread ideas of the national tea tradition. However, this aspect has been reflected neither in British nor Russian studies. Being descriptive and analytical, the present research refers to the principles of historicism, academic reliability and objectivity, helping to determine the principal trends and social and cultural features and models in Britain during the period. The present research is based on the analysis of more than one hundred genre paintings by British artists of the period. The paintings reflect the process of creating a special “truly English” material and visual context of tea drinking, which displaced all “oriental allusions” from this ceremony, to create a specific entourage and etiquette of tea consumption, and set nationally determined patterns of behavior at the tea table. The analysis shows the presence of English traditions of tea drinking visualization. The canvases of British artists, unlike the Russian ones, never reflect social problems: tea parties take place against the background of either well-furnished interiors or beautiful landscapes, being a visual embodiment of Great Britain as a “paradise of the prosperous bourgeoisie”, manifesting the bourgeois virtues. Special attention is paid to the role of the women in this ritual, the theme of the relationship between mothers and children. A unique English painting theme, which has not been manifested in any other art school in the world, is a children’s tea party. Victorian paintings reflect the processes of democratization of society: representatives of the lower classes appear on canvases. Paintings do not only reflect the norms and ideals that existed in the society, but also provide the set patterns for it."

Relela, Mokgadi, e Lydia Mavuru. "LIFE SCIENCES TEACHERS’ CONCEPTIONS ABOUT SOCIOSCIENTIFIC ISSUES IN THE TOPIC EVOLUTION". In International Conference on Education and New Developments. inScience Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36315/2021end009.

The goal of science education is emphatically positioned on promoting science literacy. The rationale is learners should not only learn about scientific knowledge and processes but also on how to apply the knowledge when making decisions about heterogenous societal and personal issues. Previous research has indicated that by addressing socioscientific issues (SSIs) when teaching controversial science topics, it provides a suitable context for developing scientific literacy in learners. Scientifically literate learners are well-informed citizens with regards to the social, ethical, economic, and political issues impacting on contemporary society. The theory of evolution is one such Life Sciences topic deeply embedded with SSIs. Teachers are conflicted when teaching this topic due to the controversy surrounding the theory as they view the teaching of evolution as a way of negating the legitimacy of their religious and cultural convictions. It is against this background that the study sought to answer the research question: How do Life Sciences teachers conceptualise socioscientific issues embedded in the topic evolution? In an explanatory mixed method approach, a questionnaire with both quantitative and qualitative questions was administered to 28 randomly selected grade 12 Life Sciences teachers. Data was analysed and descriptive statistics were obtained, and themes generated. The findings showed that all the participants were knowledgeable about the SSIs embedded in the topic evolution. In justifying their conceptions 61% of the teachers perceived SSIs as important in improving learners’ reasoning and argumentative skills; developing learners’ critical thinking skills; and in informing learners in decision making. There were however 11% of the teachers who pointed out that SSIs as too sensitive to deal with hence not suitable to teach young learners. Though the teachers were knowledgeable about the SSIs embedded in the theory of evolution, it does not mean that they could address them when teaching the various concepts of evolution. The main source of the controversy rose from the evolution of humankind versus the Christian belief in the six-day special creation. The participants (25%) indicated that evolution challenges peoples’ religious and cultural convictions, which conflicts both the teachers and learners to question or go against their religious beliefs. Several teachers pointed out that some of the concepts on evolution such as ‘living organisms share common ancestry (18%) and ‘the formation of new species from existing species’ (11%), undermine the superiority of human beings over other organisms. The findings have implications for both pre-and in-service teacher professional development.
