Climate change is neither an overnight phenomenon nor does it spans on days and months. It is a gradual process that takes years to makes coastal communities socially vulnerable. Social vulnerability is the susceptibility of individuals to the natural disasters. It has been witnessed that global coastal communities have social vulnerability due to climate change. Similarly, the coastal community of Sindh is also linked to social vulnerability due to climate change. The current study intends to explore the social vulnerability of fishermen of coastal communities due to climate change. The qualitative research is widely accepted to find out the social vulnerability. The research population of this study is fishermen living in the Thatta, Sujawal, and Badin districts of Sindh province, Pakistan, selected through the purposive sampling. In each district, 10 IDIs ((In-depth Interview) and 3 FGDs (Focus Group Discussion) were conducted with fishermen after building rapport among them. The sample size included 30 IDIs and 9 FGDs in the study. The study revealed that climate change (cyclone, flood, etc.) and decrease in freshwater lakes have a tremendous effect in lowering fishermen socioeconomic status; reducing their livelihood resources, low income, and poor health of fishermen. Moreover, the increases in expenditure to sail for fishing, and the exploitation by middlemen have also been noticed by this study. Keywords: Social Vulnerability, Climate Change, Fishermen, Coastal Region, Sindh

There is an emerging call for empirical studies that examine the development of masculine identity among Black college men. However, the varied ways Black college men made meaning of participating in these research processes are virtually absent. The purpose of this particular inquiry is to offer insights into how 17 Black college men described their participation in a research study that explored sensitive topics involving their identity and interpersonal relationships with other men. Building rapport with Black college men through the research interview process was critical. Data analysis yielded five themes that illustrated how Black college men made meaning of their participation in a research process that employed both semi-structured and photo-elicitation interviews.

This article provides a critical reflection on methodological issues at the interface of researcher national identity and emotional vulnerability. This aspect of social research is often neglected in discussions of positionality, primarily in relation to emotional risk in the field, and here we address this gap in the literature. Rather than reflecting on access and rapport, or issues related to the complexities of insider or outsider research, the national identity of the researcher is considered alongside emotional entanglements experienced in the field. The emotion work that is performed, and the emotional risks that are experienced by the researcher as a consequence of nationality reveal much about the complexities of identity and power relations in the field. The fieldwork informing this article was undertaken as part of an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)-funded study (ES/N019423/1) that examined how seafarers from different ethnic and faith backgrounds interact with each other on board and how their religious/spiritual and welfare needs are addressed ashore.

Research has historically focussed on participants who are relatively easy to access; those who have resources (time and literacy) to respond to surveys, who can travel, and are socially connected. Failure to meaningfully engage with intended participants and achieve representativeness in participation risks diminishing the applicability and impact of research findings to local contexts. Motivated by goals of social justice and health equity, this scoping review sought to identify strategies to effectively engage and integrate the “authentic voice” of populations that are described as vulnerable or precarious and therefore perceived as “hard-to-reach.” A system tic search strategy identified 34 eligible papers. Articles underwent (i) a title and abstract screening by two reviewers, followed by (ii) a full text review of eligible articles by one author. Free-form research problem mind-mapping was applied to facilitate analysis and generate creative associations between ideas. Thematic and content analysis was then applied to generate themes and subthemes. Four high-level themes emerged: key players, trust and rapport, navigating structural precarity, and moving beyond “participation.” We identified that substantial shifts in researcher mindsets are required to reframe perceptions of vulnerability and move towards strengths-based approaches. Efforts need to be directed towards establishing deep trust and rapport through early engagement and social reciprocity. Systemic barriers to research participation and partnership must be addressed to overcome issues of structural precarity. We urge researchers and practitioners to embrace “scholar activism” and to actively dismantle the precarity that limits active “participation” and to build deliberate strategies to create forums where the “authentic” voice can be amplified.

The objective of this work is to examine the socio-economic social issues of the integration of populations into the community vessels of honor. This study favoured the qualitative approach based on literature research and participant observation conducted in the main centre where the community's senior pastor officiates. The results show that the church promotes ideologies that place the human being at the root of his socio-economic vulnerability. To fight against it, this community teaches ideologies and has an organization that accompanies believers.. In this respect, it presents itself as a tool for social cohesion and socio-economic resilience. The study provides decision-makers and the social body with indicators for monitoring and control of the sector, in a context of multiplication of religious communities, subject to controversy.

AbstractThe issue of care for older people brings up a number of concerns in African cities, which are characterized by rapid urban growth, economic crisis, transformation in social relationships, and the near absence of institutional support for older people. Based on quantitative and qualitative data collected through the Ouagadougou Health and Demographic Surveillance System (Ouagadougou HDSS, 2010-2017), this article examines the situation of older men and women living in the capital of Burkina Faso, whether they have always lived there or moved there from elsewhere. It aims to better understand the vulnerabilities of these older people, what becomes of them over time, and the issues and family dynamics that surround them. The results highlight important differences according to the sex and migration status of older people as determinants of vulnerabilities and emphasize the role in their care played by the sociocultural context.RésuméLa problématique de la prise en charge des personnes âgées suscite de nombreuses inquiétudes dans les villes africaines, caractérisées par une urbanisation rapide, la crise économique, la transformation des rapports sociaux, et la quasi inexistencede l’assistance institutionnelle aux personnes âgées. This research aims to explore the language features employed by male characters in the Netflix series "Sex Education" and to uncover the underlying purposes associated with each linguistic feature utilized by these characters. Adopting a descriptive qualitative approach supported by quantitative data analysis, the study focuses on the verbal expressions of male characters within the series, encompassing words, phrases, clauses, and sentences within dialogues. Through meticulous analysis, the researcher identifies 249 instances of men's language features within the series. These instances were categorized into distinct types, with swear words or taboo language accounting for 30.5%, minimal responses or backchanneling comprising 27.7%, direct questions representing 20.7%, compliments based on skills at 11%, and explicit commands making up 10.1% of the total. The study delves into the various purposes associated with men's language features. These purposes encompass expressions of masculinity, establishment of dominance, facilitation of rapport, concealment of vulnerability, and negotiation of social hierarchies within diverse cultural contexts. In contrast, women's language features typically serve to express uncertainty, convey emotions, elicit responses, soften utterances, and emphasize points. The distinctiveness of men's language features lies in their inclination towards asserting dominance, taking specific actions, offering compliments, and gathering specific details, reflecting the multifaceted nature of gendered communication dynamics within the series.

Abstract Background and Objectives Without an effective screening tool, accompanied by clear guidelines of what to do when elder abuse is suspected, health workers may face challenges when asking questions about elder abuse. This study aimed to find the most effective and acceptable existing elder abuse screening tool and to create guidelines for using the tool. Research Design and Methods A rapid review of the literature identified existing validated elder abuse screening tools. Then, 5 tools (Vulnerability to Abuse Screening Scale [VASS], Elder Abuse Suspicion Index [EASI], Elder Assessment Instrument [EAI], Caregiver Abuse Screen [CASE], and Brief Abuse Screen for the Elderly [BASE]), selected based on their internal rigor, were presented to health professionals to assess the tools’ relevance to their practice. Three focus groups were held with 23 health professionals in Victoria, Australia, in 2017. Data were thematically analyzed. Results None of the tools were deemed suitable by participants for use in their practice. Criticisms of the tools included: using outdated terminology, asking binary questions, asking multiple questions at once, failure to consider the older person’s cognitive status, failure to consider how culture mediates elder abuse, and failure to outline a referral pathway to those administering the tool. Participants emphasized that the screening tool must promote trust and rapport between the assessor and the older person to solicit a story on this sensitive subject. Discussion and Implications A successful elder abuse screening tool must be concise, easy to use, account for the older person’s health and social vulnerabilities, and outline a referral pathway if elder abuse is suspected.

The study aims to analyse the connection among types of security intimidations: threats, challenges, vulnerabilities, and security risks, to establish the rapport between national and global threats, to review critical issues of the security environment. The study’s relevance is that the concept of security needs to be updated in the current changes in the global security context and the emergence of an increasing number and variety of threats under the transformations that are taking place. The research shows how the reconceptualization of security in the late twentieth century was influenced by global contextual changes associated with the end of the Cold War and the use of constructivist approaches in the social sciences. This dual change has led to a rethinking of security challenges in the second decade of the 21st century, leading to increased interest in this study. It is exposed that the concepts of vulnerability and risk are used not only in the context of foreign and defence policy, but also concerning ecologic security challenges caused by global environmental change, climate change and dangers and disasters, where there is no consensus within and among the community on vulnerability, and risks. In conclusion, it is proved that conceptual thinking on security threats has necessitated precise definition and consensus on these concepts, especially on practical policy measures to achieve agreed goals, and systematization of types of threats to all types of security and life support. It is determined that the degradation of traditional political institutions, against the background of the degeneration of the established international law system and order, cause the emergence of new threats to national security and, accordingly, political, as its subcategories. It is noted that modern researchers have paid little attention to studying the connection between the concepts of political security, state security and threats to state security. In the context of new globalization threats, states are facing a change in the security context and need to review security strategies and update the discourse on political and national security.

English The 1995 Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, a landmark voluntary international instrument, seeks to promote change in the way in which fisheries and aquaculture are managed and utilized. Responsible behaviour and accountability are at the heart of the Code. It is intended to be implemented in a holistic and transparent manner by governments and stakeholders in all fisheries situations, irrespective of their locations and scale, and contribute, as a result, to the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF) and long-term sustainability. The article commences with discussion of the background to the Code, its scope and structure, the associated instruments that have been concluded within the Code's framework, related instruments and, importantly, the technical guidelines that are elaborated by FAO to support the Code's implementation. The next section addresses FAO's role in monitoring and reporting every second year to the FAO Committee on Fisheries on the Code's implementation. Information for this task is collected from governments, regional fishery bodies and non-government organizations by way of a self-assessment questionnaire. This section is followed by a brief discussion of the precautionary approach and the EAF that focuses on parts of the Code that are intended to implement the EAF. The Reykjavik Declaration and subsequent initiatives to deepen the EAF's implementation are also addressed. Stakeholder participation and the role of marine protected areas in promoting the EAF and sustainability are then considered along with the special requirements of developing countries. Some of FAO's activities that contribute to the implementation of the EAF are highlighted. The conclusion points to the need for governments and stakeholders to sustain ongoing activities to support the Code's implementation and for the international community to continue to provide technical and financial assistance to developing countries to ensure that they are not left behind in the implementation process.

School in modern times is characterized as a social environment in which most students spend most of their time, as it is a space understood as a privileged place for learning, not simply an irrefutable educational theme, as well as values and beliefs, which young people assimilate to confront themselves and live in society, in addition to developing critical sense, self-esteem and security (BYDLOWSKI; LEFÉVRE; PEREIRA, 2016, p. 47). Faced with such a scenario, it is proposed to investigate the conceptions of the school community in relation to failure in learning, thus seeking to understand how the social authors of the school community instigate mediators with social vulnerability in the constructive resource in the researched school, using various fields of knowledge such as pedagogical praxis (FERREIRA, 2020, p. 86), pedagogical resources (SOSA; MANZUOLI, 2019).

Inspired by Pierre Bourdieu's field theory, Galli also examines the tense relation between a field of production specialized in constructing specific symbolic products known as brands, and a world of legitimate cultural production. In the field of brand production different sorts of recognized skills and resources render its possessors communicative capital, an active property expressed in objectified, institutionalized, and embodied states like awards, membership in field-specific boards and juries, and the bodily capacity to master social presentations. A study of "brand-day workshops" rounds off the text suggesting that institutional and individual agents in the field of power not only aim at perpetuating and controlling brand competition through advertising and branding, but also the more hidden dimension of already existing social distinctions and divisions.

Group work skills are commonly viewed as an important generic outcome of university for all students. Often, students working in groups for course assignments engage in potentially face-threatening interactions during discussions. The complication is compounded when students represent culturally diverse backgrounds in such intercultural communication. This study describes the rapport management that takes place during face-to-face group work interactions and examines the complex negotiation of social categories during intercultural group work interactions. This ethnographically informed qualitative study involved participants who were first-year undergraduates taking a course in English for Business. Their group discussions were observed in-situ, interactions were audio-taped and then transcribed for analysis. The study investigates the social intercultural interactions using Rapport Management as a framework to analyse intercultural interactions based on the concepts of face, sociality rights, and interactional goals. The findings confirm that rapport orientation is a key influence in strategy choice driven by the constructed social categories of the participants. Individual social categories are co-constructed and negotiated during the interaction processes. In face-threatening situations, the participants would orient to rapport-neglect and rapport-challenge during an interaction, but they would finally orientate to rapport-maintenance to achieve the successful interactional goals of group work. The study contributes towards the body of knowledge and understanding on rapport management and social categories in group work interactions in the context of a Malaysian university. The findings suggest that education practitioners need to be more interculturally competent in understanding the dynamics of intercultural communication among students during their participation in group work. Keywords: Rapport management, intercultural communication, social categories, group work, interaction.

Abstract The potential for natural disasters in Pandeglang Regency is enormous considering that various kinds of disasters can occur in Pandeglang Regency. There needs to be comprehensive efforts to reduce the impact of the risk of natural disasters, one of them is by knowing the level of social vulnerability of the community in Pandeglang. Social vulnerability calculates the level of social vulnerability of the community to scenarios of natural disasters. This study aims to determine the level of social vulnerability and its distribution. Concept method of Social Vulnerability Index (SOVI) is used to measure regional vulnerability based on social indicators to disasters using the aspects of exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity. The variables used are population density, proportion of informal sector workers, proportion of vulnerable age population, proportion of non-permanent houses, proportion of prosperous households, proportion of high school graduates and number of social institutions. The level of vulnerability that dominates is a low vulnerability area by number 25 sub-districts or 71.42 % while there are 9 sub-districts or 25.71 % for high vulnerability areas and only 1 sub-district or 2.85 % of high vulnerability areas, namely Cimanuk District, which is in the northern part of Pandeglang Regency. Based on the value of vulnerability in several areas that still show a fairly large level of medium-high vulnerability. So, this data can be used as a recommendation as early mitigation measures to reduce the level of social vulnerability in order to reduce the impact that will later be caused.
