Resumo:
This chapter reviews the literature applying health behavior theories to indoor tanning. Few studies have tried to fit full versions of health behavior models to indoor tanning. Theoretical models from the family of theories referred to as the reasoned action approach (e.g., theory of planned behavior, behavioral alternative model, prototype willingness model, etc.) have been most commonly used to study indoor tanning. Results indicate that these models fit indoor tanning data moderately to extremely well. Two lesser known models, problem behavior theory and the terror management health model, have also demonstrated a reasonable fit. Two other common models, the health belief model and social cognitive theory, have never been fully tested with indoor tanning. However, key constructs from these models (e.g., perceived susceptibility and threat, modeling) have been used to understand indoor tanning. Empirical research conducted represents a solid start toward developing strong, comprehensive models of indoor tanning that can guide intervention efforts. This initial work needs to be expanded by conducting longitudinal studies and by including a broader age range in studies because the majority of existing work has focused on young adults. Incorporating findings related to tanning dependency, peer group affiliation, media influences and other constructs into these foundational models will also improve our understanding and ability to develop efficacious interventions to reduce engagement in this health risk behavior.

Given that the National Institute of Health is currently focusing on a translational approach to research, the fields of clinical and social psychology have been coming together to foster mutual understandings of shared concepts. Acceptance and action, two processes in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, are prevalent in the clinical research and literature following the advent of 3rd wave (cognitive and behavioral) therapies. During this same time self-compassion, or the concept that internal states should be accepted by the individual as only responses to the environment and that the individual should continue to act on value directed goals, has been gaining credibility in the social psychology literature. Self-compassion combines mindfulness, recognition of a common humanity, and self-kindness. The current study focuses on selfcompassion and acceptance and action.. These two concepts share similarities by way of encouraging the individual to look at situations and reactions objectively and accept the negative aspects as part of the human experience not as a reflection of self. These two concepts may be particularly relevant when dealing with a stigmatizing characteristic or situation. Specifically, the individual at risk for perceiving stigma may engage these tools to understand that others experience similar situations and that their internal reactions are part of the human condition. Thus, the implementation of such concepts could mitigate some of the negative aspects of stigma. The current study looks at self-compassion and acceptance and action in the context of parental reactions regarding their children’s behavioral concerns. Specifically, we look at parents’ stigma of their child’s behavior, stigma of seeking help for their child, and willingness to seek help. Initial analysis of this cross-sectional data revealed that among parents, higher scores on acceptance and action, as well as self-compassion, predicted lower perceived stigma of the problem behavior. Additionally, parents’ stigma of seeking help for their child’s behavior predicted willingness to seek help, suggesting that in addition to logistical barriers (e.g., transportation, availability of services) to seeking help for their children, parents may also face social psychological barriers. These findings identify specific concepts that may influence parents’ perception of stigma and willingness to seek services that can be targeted to increase service use for children with behavioral problems. Discussion will surround the specific settings in which parents are willing to seek services (doctor’s office versus mental health facility) and the roles of self-compassion and acceptance in reducing stigma in order to enhance service seeking.

This thesis examines recent events in Oaxaca, Mexico that demonstrate the continued relevance of the spatiality of resistance for understanding social movement activism and alternative political projects. Arising out of a violent confrontation between state police and the striking teachers union, the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca created spaces of autonomy and resistance that challenged the legitimacy of the state. The fluid movement between a politics of demand, in which social actors force changes in the state apparatus, and a politics of the act, in which movements construct new forms of social relations in their own sites of activism, represents the dual nature of practices that attempt to alter spaces of resistance while at the same time negotiating with broader social structures. The movement in Oaxaca is an example of the possibilities of political projects that recognize the need to move beyond mere resistance to form creative alternatives.

Kassem, Majed. "Revolutionary Action in the Arab Spring: A Typological Theory on Popular Revolution". Thesis, NSUWorks, 2017. https://nsuworks.nova.edu/shss_dcar_etd/85.

Resumo:
This dissertation employs a qualitative case study approach to investigate the 2010-2012 Arab Spring. It addresses two research questions: 1) what are the Arab Spring events instances of, and 2) what gave rise to the variation across the Arab Spring outcomes? The ultimate objective of this research is to go beyond theorizing the Arab Spring to advance a typological theory on popular revolution. To that end, the study reviews several bodies of literature in the social sciences, and employs a structured, focused comparison approach to analyze variance across six Arab Spring cases: Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria, and Bahrain. As a result, four theoretical types of revolutionary action have been identified: elite-imposed popular evolution (EIPR), foreign-imposed popular revolution (FIPR), foreign-blocked abortive revolution (FBAR), and elite-blocked abortive revolution (EBAR). In addition, the research found EIPR to have been the case in Tunisia and Egypt, FIPR in Libya and Yemen, and FBAR in Syria and Bahrain; EBAR was an empty cell in the Arab Spring. Furthermore, the study proposes that cases of EIPR are likely to culminate in a quasi-coup by autonomous elites; FIPR in a foreign-imposed regime change (FIRC) by international intervention; FBAR in a foreign-imposed regime maintenance (FIRM) by foreign patrons; and EBAR in an elite-imposed regime maintenance (EIRM) by subservient elites. The contingent generalizations offered by this theory should help scholars and policy makers approximate the trajectory of future revolutionary events by tracing them to the above theoretical types. This should help them improve their overall response to recent and ongoing revolutionary events, especially in the area of conflict resolution.

Abstract: The present master¿s dissertação analyzes the social movement against the installation of the Termo-Electric PlantEnergy of Carioba II in the city of Americana, state of São Paulo. The movement occurred in period during the Environmental Licensing of the plant between 2000 and 2002. Through the 42 interviews with leaders of the movement , a survey of documentary sources and articles and many publications in the local press, the study seeks to understand the main characteristics of the movement studied as it emerges in the three cities to be affected by the plant and where one finds the strength of the movement: Americana, Santa Bárbara d'Oeste and Piracicaba. We rely on the works of Alberto Melucci and Manuel Castells for theoretical support on the study of the social movement and the popular participation it mobilized in the case of the opposition to the Carioba II plant. We associate the effects of modernization through the Plant on the individuals, modifying their routines and perception of time and space, accenting the individualization and the necessity of if keeping their routines as excellent elements for their joining the social movement, also influenced by their knowledge, experiences, beliefs, social networks where theyt participated, among others factors. The emphasizes the plural, polyclass aspect of the movement and its fragmentary character, which emerges during the resistance of the local communities, as expressed in the collective identity with respect to the globalizing economic trends exemplified by the Plant. It also exams the appropriation and production of information for recruiting and securing social actors to the movement and its distribution of this information using concomitantly the modern technologies based on computer communication and the direct communication between the leadership of the movement and its base supporter

This dissertation is focused on the experiences which were lived and shared by a group of residents of Jardim Zaíra, in Maua, a city in ABC Paulista, São Paulo between the years 1958 and 1970. Our gaze turns to the experiences related to the urbanization of that place, the relationship of the residents with the Catholic Church and with the Neighborhood Friends Society , the participation of PCdoB members and later on, in 1968, the engagement of those people in a political movement called Popular Action, which through the process titled "integration in production" formed the cell-base-22 and encouraged the militancy against dictatorial government outrages present in Brazil that time .Through Oral History, we tried to analyze testimonials from 11 people who were related to that movement. We also present an assessment of 6 photos that rescue the daily life of those residents as well as the analysis of texts that bring us the vision of their leaders and the analysis of documents produced by the organs of repression that deal about their arrests and trial. The aim is to contribute towards the understanding about the social movement before and after the arrival of Popular Action members to that neighborhood as well as the reasons that brought them there and the experiences derived from this encounter. Similarly, we present the analysis of the CB-22 dismantling. We understand the importance of this movement and its ability to influence others later which helped ABC Paulista region to be known nationally because of the struggles for democracy. In times of Truth Commission, the research aims to broaden discussions not only of social movements, but also about the abuses caused by the organs of repression

This study aimed to study the effect that the "Reflect-Action" approach, spread out by the C?rculo Internacional Reflect-A??o (CIRAC), brought for the empowerment, creation and strengthening of the social capital in two rural communities from the agrarian reform, in the county of Tracunha?m, state of Pernambuco. Our theoretical reference was based on the contributions that the Freireana popular education brought for the construction of methodologies of intervention based on the empowerment of the groups, creation and strengthening of the social capital. Considering the rural world, its particularities and the deep changes observed in its daily routine, particularly in the context of the settlements from the agrarian reform, we tried to understand the strategies reproduced or created by the settlers to insert themselves in a more sustainable way in the relationship with the State, markets, and the civil society. The research was carried out through half-structured interviews, focal groups, and participant observation conducted during a two years interval. We concluded that groups that built a more interactive action with the technical-economic initiatives of entourage and those of participative educational character tended to build social stronger relations of solidarity, reciprocity, and confidence, which resulting in a significant expansion of the conditions for generating social capital. The expansion of such abilities and the development of the individual capacities promoted and increased the bargaining power, contraposition and claim of these groups aiming a more harmonious economic, social, cultural, and environmental development.

This work aims to investigate the possibility of institutions witch have responsibility to defend social interests to exercise a mediating role between the political system and civil society in the cycle of formation or improvement of public policies. As an institution of this nature, the Prosecutor's Office will be highlighted in the research from a resolutive erspective of its attributions, in order to investigate whether it is possible to act as a promoter and coordinator of the public sphere in arenas constituted by the institution itself or by others that have, in their functions, the task of defending social interests. The assumption of this work is based on the overcoming of the consciousness paradigm by the language paradigm and it has the communicative action like the tool to reach satisfactory levels of effectiveness of popular participation. The theoretical reference of the work is the Jürgen Habermas’ perception about deliberative democracy, especially based on the theory of communicative action. The research will be part bibliographical, which will be added to a field research to evaluate cuts of some projects of the Prosecutor's Office of Maranhão. First of all, aspects of the constitution of the contemporary and intersubjective public sphere will be approached in which actors that make up a material political representation of society and its interest groups interact between themselves, giving importance to the role of local associativism, new social movements and their networks inside of the process of formation and improvement of public policies of social interests. The text will deal with the phenomenon of popular participation in the face of philosophical paradigms and emphasize the necessary attention with the modalities of speech acts that hatch in the public sphere, so that the results of communicative action are not misrepresented, in order to ensure that collective deliberations in the public spaces of discussion obey the criteria of a democratic proceduralism that intend itself adequated according the Habermas' theory. Establishing the bases for the affirmation of deliberative democracy based on communicative action, reasons will be exposed to believe that the Prosecutor's Office, as an institution dedicated to defending social interests and holding horizontal accountability power, can exercise an important role in mediation between interests of civil society and the administrative system, including the creation of a forum within its institutional functions where the bases of communicative action can be guaranteed and coordinated by its members. The text will also address a way of assessing the effectiveness of the influence and normativity of popular participation before the political system in the cycle of public policy formation. An ideal conformation of the relationship between society and the system will be suggested, so that to guarantee administrative responsiveness between what the former wishes and what the latter offers as social welfare. Some stabilization factors of this ideal conformation will be suggested, which can be activated by the Prosecutor’s Office service. In this sense, the work will make a content analysis in two project cutbacks supported by the Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Maranhão to demonstrate how these stabilizing factors should be promoted and what their limits are. This analysis will be carried out from the data collection of the Prosecutor's Office with the purpose of analyzing the processes in which it will be verified if the means used by the Institution have achieved the goals set forth in the constitution of the cutbacks of the respective projects. The bibliographical research on the theoretical reference of the work and the documentary analysis of data collected at the Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Maranhão will be used as techniques.

To allow a better understanding of the theme, some works by Bourdieu and Lahire that discuss cultural capital, social capital, habitus and cursus will be used as a theoretical reference. The subjects of study of the research are young people attended by the organization Cidadão Pro Mundo, whose objective is the teaching of the English language, aged between 17 and 25 years, and who are not attending higher education. The paper aimed to answer the question: what are the structuring factors in the trajectory of young people attended by the NGO Cidadão Pró Mundo regarding their fate in higher education? For this, the research applied questionnaires and interviewed some young people from the NGO Cidadão Pró Mundo. All the young people who participated in the research wish to attend higher education, and seek a higher education than their parents, their strategies are based on habitus, understood as durable dispositions structured according to the social environment of the agent that would serve as structuring structures of the practices. It is possible to highlight: the young people are aware of the difficulties of reaching vacancies in public or private higher education with scholarship, so they started to adopt strategies that structure their trajectories, such strategies are: mastery of a second language, participation in civil society organizations for job placement, and looking for an international career

This research was aimed at assessing the effectiveness and efficiency of community based targeting and self-targeting methods in the selection of beneficiaries in Safety nets programmes in Malawi. These methods have been chosen because they have been largely used for selecting beneficiaries in Safety net programmes. The focus was on assessing the effectiveness and efficiency of these methods where effectiveness refers to the ability of the methodology to reach out to the poorest while efficiency is a measure of the costs that are associated with the identification of these people. In order to objectively assessed the challenges associated with these methods, the study concentrated on Public Works Programmes, which targets relatively high number of people compared to the other programmes and have used both methods for identifying beneficiaries.

This work presents a case study about volunteer works of social action related to the question of urban poverty at Brazilian Contemporary Society. The study was made both with theoric references and field research. The field research refers to a protestant group that assists people that live in streets in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, in the Guaratiba neighborhood, doing a work called "Sop?o". The general Purpose of this work is to produce a reflection about the causes of religious volunteer assistencialist practices nowadays, in relation both to the insufficient public policies and to the historic context of the engagement of civil society. Therefore, the dissertation analyses the volunteer works of social action of protestant churches under two principal prospects, or two hypotheses. The first shows the volunteer work like assistentialist and philanthropic, that works like an answer to the insufficient public policies - in this case, we will appropriate of Welfare State conceptions. The second shows the volunteer work like an assistance provided by protestant religious associations that appear, in this case, like civil society associations, resultants of the movement of civil participation that grow up starting in the 90's with the new Constitution, and promoter of public policies.

Simple content analysis methods, such as the Bechdel test and measuring percentage of female talk time or characters, have seen a surge of attention from mainstream media and in social media the last couple of years. Underlying assumptions are generally shared with the gender role socialization model and consequently, an importance is stated, due to a high degree to which impressions from media shape in particular young children’s identification processes. For young girls, the Disney Princesses franchise (with Frozen included) stands out as the number one player commercially as well as in customer awareness. The vertical lineup of Disney princesses spans from the passive and domestic working Snow White in 1937 to independent and super-power wielding princess Elsa in 2013, which makes the line of films an optimal test subject in evaluating above-mentioned simple content analysis methods. As a control, a meta-study has been conducted on previous academic studies on the same range of films. The sampled research, within fields spanning from qualitative content analysis and semiotics to coded content analysis, all come to the same conclusions regarding the general changes over time in representations of female characters. The objective of this thesis is to answer whether or not there is a correlation between these changes and those indicated by the simple content analysis methods, i.e. whether or not the simple popular methods are in general coherence with the more intricate academic methods.

Within the last three decades, contemporary North America came to reinvent a socially focused genre of literary personal narratives. These new editorial and writing projects, published in the form of collections of personal narratives, emerged as a tool for the socially voiceless to secure some measure of agency in their contemporary social and cultural situation. Projects such as the Freedom Writers’ Diary or volumes of the Voice of Witness book series fit in the process that is currently labeled social empowerment. Witnesses express a deep urge to share their story in the hope to denounce their experience of an enduring social injustice. The written word, primary a means for self-disclosure, serves to exorcise the suffering associated to this specific predicament. The narrators engage in a powerful self-investigative gesture oriented towards resilience and renewed enfranchisement in regaining control over their life and environment. At the moment of publication, however, these testimonies come to be validated as authentic examples of the injustices they disclose. These examples serve an educational purpose: raising the audience’s awareness and opening deliberative fora for these issues to be discussed and for solutions to be hammered out and eventually implemented.

The purpose of this dissertation is to propose a theoretical model for the subgenre of testimonials of social empowerment. With the concept of empowerment as groundwork, the model develops a textual approach framed in a psychosocial structure. I argue that testimonials may be described as examples of Jürgen Habermas’s communicative action. As speech acts aimed at reaching understanding, testimonials capitalize both on the binding and bonding aspects of illocutionary force in the hope to secure with their audience an ongoing dialogue over issues of social justice. The volumes, as unofficial public spheres, mobilize the normative and practical dynamics at work in social movements. These dynamics express as two narrative guiding threads: an aesthetic based on impact, and an ethics based on responsibility. The texts’ aesthetic develops a form of perlocutionary realism instantiating a sense of authenticity and sincerity embodied in the narrators’ voices. The resulting impact is coupled to moral concerns based on a polysemic understanding of social responsibility, on which narrators seek to build their narratives’ ethical potential. A series of case studies allowed to demonstrate that both narrative threads are realized as an appropriation of four paradigmatic forms of rhetorical ethos, each based on a specific realm of the social world: intimacy, justice, spirituality and activism.

Abstract: This research has as its theme the organizational process and construction of the demands of the movement of the favelas's residents and how this social movement has been conforming, over time, his repertoire of struggle for affirmation of the decent housing, mediated by its main supporter at that time, the Catholic Church, its relationship with the Government and their learning process in the attempt to support their claims. Our main goal is to describe how were the interactions between the residents of the favelas and public authorities, in the city of São Paulo, between 1975 and 1982, in a moment in which public policies for the slums would gradually moving from an emphasis on removing, still hegemonic, to the idea of collective assistance to families. For our analysis, we will quickly recapture, as a counterpoint, the struggle of the residents of illegal squatter settlements as a way of assessing the different patterns of State response associated with the struggle for urban land. The survey was developed using secondary bibliography and analysis of documents of the period, some of them produced by the movement itself and also by search of newspapers of that time

Around 2008, a literary genre called "zhichang xiaoshuo" arouses enthusiasm in China: bestsellers with their adaptations generate several hundred works in the same vein. This phenomenon that we call "white-collar literature" is literary, socio-economic and cultural at once. New in the history of literature, this literature is atypical due to the professional identity of its authors, its hybrid forms, and also its production methods. Four works, including most publicized and most original, constitute our core corpus, and offer a sample of the richness of the phenomenon. Our work takes a two-pronged approach, both socio-historical and literary. For works of the corpus, we first study the plot, the characters, the textual structure and narrative techniques. We examine in parallel two fictions by renowned writers who portrayed the working world of the early and late 1980s, respectively, and two fictions in the “guanchang” and the “shangchang” genres at the turn of the century or contemporary with “zhichang xiaoshuo”. The economic, political and cultural context in which the phenomenon appeared is widely studied. We also analyze the adaptations as variants of the literary work, and try to explain their differences. Finally, we explore the functions of this popular literature in twenty-first century Chinese society which is, on the one hand, proud of its prosperity and enjoying the benefits of new technologies; and on the other hand, marked by the trauma of its past and by a general loss of bearings

This thesis aims to a better understanding of the ways in which Pierre Perrault’s work interacted with Québécois society during the Quiet Revolution and with the ideas on which it was based.Specifically, it will focus on the way in which the filmmaker’s artistic conception might have been influenced by Québécois popular culture and how it has, in turn, reinvested it. I will analyse the relationships between the filmmaker’s work and three distinct contexts: the representations of the Québécois nation and their historicity in the 20th century; the ambivalent relationship between cinema and Québécois society since the birth of this mass media; and the reminiscences of oral tradition in popular culture and cinema. In order to properly understand Perrault’s creative practice an its inscription in the Québécois society, I propose to consider his work from a global perspective, which includes the films and the essays, as well as the film production and distribution, with the idea that all these elements formed in fact a coherent and indivisible whole in the ways in which Perrault thought of his filmmaking. I thus suggest the idea that the “cinéma de la parole” must be considered from a fresh perspective: its core or its meaning are not specifically found in the films themselves, nor in their reception, but in a long “process” of sharing that begins before the film’s recording and that is meant to continue beyond the screening of the finished work: the true aim of Perrault’s cinema is the very process of exchange, of interrelation and co-definition. The concept of “process”, which will be developed throughout this entire study, constitutes a frame for its “contextual” analysis. It also encompasses the way in which the filmmaker conceived his work as cinematographer; my analysis can thus be situated within a hermeneutic tradition. Finally, describing and analysing Perrault’s cinema in terms of process also allows us to consider a different conception of film based on Perrault’s example: a complex historical and socio-cultural phenomenon intimately tied to the evolutions of a given society, and whose meanings depend on the contexts in which it grows and with which it maintains a relationship based on exchange

In this dissertation I analyze the impacts imposed on the daily life of residents in two poor neighborhoods in Recife -PE, called "Xuxa" and "Deus os Acuda". These inhabitants were expelled by the government from the area which they occupied in the edges of the Boa Viagem mangroves, because of the construction of the Via Mangue. This road was proposed to solve, according to its creators, problems related to urban mobility , environmental preservation and public housing in the southern area of Recife. In a cultural approach, this qualitative research aims to discuss the strategies used by public managers to justify and facilitate the Via Mangue project, specifically regarding to the expulsion of the inhabitants of these areas, reflecting the tactics of the subjects in the reception of this. The specific objectives are: to analyze how were produced and practiced spaces, as well as sociability in Boa Viagem district, giving special attention to the experience of the residents of the localities "Xuxa" and "Deus nos Acuda"; problematize the discourses of public managers as part of the strategies in the context of relations of social forces, in which the social inclusion and the dignity of the residents of the localities appear as arguments for the implementation of the Via Mangue project; to analyze how the population of "Xuxa" and "Deus nos Acuda" appropriated the city hall project, its tactics and gimmicks in the struggle for recreating spaces and identities. These objectives were discussed in a structure of three consecutive and connected chapters, respectively. To perform the analysis, I used the concept of "space", "place" , "tactic" , "strategy" and "ownership" according to Michel de Certeau , the concept of "identity" according to Stuart Hall and Tomaz Tadeu da Silva. This work can be classified as oral history because its sources are reports of former residents’ memories from "Xuxa" and "Deus nos Acuda". Furthermore, print and electronic journalistic publications were used as sources. Interviews, field observations, photographic analyses and literature searches were performed. The method used was Discourse Analysis. I concluded that the expulsion of the residents from the localities was a process marked by contradictions which did not eliminate, but shifted boundaries of spatial segregation and caused cultural rootlessness and impaired the environmental conditions of those residents. The expelled population, however, did not have a passive attitude towards the strategies of the government, instead, they developed a productive and peremptory attitude in the recreation of their daily life, braking the strategies of the government which resulted differently than originally planned.

It has been over a century since African people were forcibly removed by official decree in 1901, from the Cape Town dockland barracks and District Six, to Uitvlugt, a farm where a location of corrugated iron &lsquo
huts&rsquo
had just been constructed. This occurrence followed an outbreak of a bubonic plague in Cape Town in 1901, which became predominant among the Africans who worked at the docks, and who were in direct and constant contact with the main carriers of the disease, i.e., the rats coming out of ships from Europe. The outbreak resulted in African being stigmatised as diseased, and being banished to the outskirts of the city. Since then, knowledge about this historical occurrence has been continuously produced, presented and communicated in many ways. It has featured in many representations through memory, heritage and history. In 1902, the new residents of Uitvlugt gave the location the name kwa-Ndabeni. Ndabeni was a nickname that the residents had given to Walter Stanford who had chaired the commission that recommended for the establishment of the location in 1901. The prefix kwa- was added to the name so that it meant in Xhosa language, the place of Ndabeni. In that way, the residents, who at that time did not consider the location as a potential place of their permanent abode, named it in a way that disassociated them from the place.

In April 2005, a group of women gathered for a human rights workshop at a Toronto drop-in centre for women experiencing homelessness, poverty, and isolation. One year later, the group sent a representative to address the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. This dissertation describes and analyzes the feminist participatory action research-intervention project that began with the workshop and led to the United Nations. Over the course of 15 months, more than 50 participants attended weekly meetings at the drop-in. They learned about social and economic rights, testified about their experiences of human rights violations, and planned and undertook actions to respond to and resist homelessness. This thesis draws upon observations of meetings, documents produced by the group, and interviews with thirteen of the participants, in order to examine the project from a number of angles. First, the project suggests a new understanding of women’s homelessness: testimonies and interviews reveal that homelessness is not only a material state, but more importantly a social process of disenfranchisement enacted through relations of harm, threat, control, surveillance, precarity and dehumanization. Understanding homelessness as a social process enables an analysis of its operations within and for a dominant social and economic order structured by colonization and neoliberal globalization. Secondly, the thesis takes up participants’ assessments of the project’s political effectiveness and its impacts on their well-being and empowerment, and reads these against the researcher’s experiences with the project, in order to explore how feminist participatory methodologies can contribute to resistance. Finally, the thesis concludes with recommendations for theory, research, service provision, and human rights advocacy on women’s homelessness.

This master thesis focuses on the construction of a social citizen from the analysis of the intervention of two local agencies located in "Trou du Nord" (Haiti). It is exploring ways in which members will represent their ownership and represent their citizenship status. We put emphasis on the social mechanisms and associations involved in building what we call "citizen social space". We have conducted a qualitative research from the works of Barber (1997) on practical policy participation and those of Lamoureux (1991) on collective social action. We assume, as central hypothesis, that associative practices are the main vector for construction of a citizen social space in "Trou du Nord". This central hypothesis is supported by two secondary one interested on the operating conditions for the exercise of citizenship and the affirmation of individual members belonging to the common area. We have made fourteen semi-structured interviews conducted with members of the "Assemblée Populaire Veye Yo Trou du Nord (APVT)" and the "Rassemblement des militants solidaires de Trou du Nord (RAMSO)". The results indicate that members of both organizations show great willingness to contribute to the development of their locality and "wellbeing" of the population. This freedom of action is based on sharing their individual experiences and their extensive knowledge of the local realities faced daily citizens. Both groups are designed as spaces of sociability, as public and dynamics places reflecting the various types of local interaction. According to the analysis, members of both groups get involved in resolving collective problems at the local level without neglecting their own interests. They are part of the game of electoral bargaining and teach their members to behave as a community of interests and action, itself contained in all interactions, processes and dynamic resolution of problems local level. Those findings validate some of our hypothetical assumptions and reveal at the same time their limits. On the one hand, the willingness to help with the wellbeing on the population, with the need for the people to speak out and to express their collective and individual problems, with the desire to have control over the elected leaders actions, are all issues that allowed the groups to pursue broader collective interest and to define themselves as a citizen social space. On the other hand, their position in the political arena especially at election time makes them appear as groups of supporters, that is to say they are not always in the construction of the general interest. We conclude this dual aspect is necessary both for the construction of a citizen social space and that of democratic citizen at the local level. In addition, those two groups help citizen to assert their sense of belonging to a local community. They help them also to develop capacities to criticize actions taking by both local and national leaders. They help them also to acquire the skills to participate – even though in the interstices – at the sociopolitical games as part of the process of building citizenship and a democratic system under construction.

The years of 2011-13 are recognized in Portugal by the high levels of social and political protest against austerity policies decided by the Government and the Troika (IMF, UE and ECB). New groups and new forms of protest emerged, giving rise to the biggest street demonstrations of last decades. Meanwhile, international politics was being disturbed by the Arabian Spring, 15M (Spain) and Occupy Wall Street mobilizations, wherein social media played an important role in the construction and dissemination of the protest. From this point of view, the cycle of protest arising in Portugal fit in to the international tendencies of rupture with old forms of collective action and activism of political actors historically supportive of these kinds of protest movements. However, the Portuguese case also exhibits evidence on continuities, mostly with regard to links and relationships to networks of activists from previous protest waves, as well as to support provided by left wing political parties and trade unions. These continuities and discontinuities are discussed and analyzed throughout this thesis.

Resumo:
This thesis revolves around some of the most central issues regarding collective actions by labor unions in defense of transindividual interests. These are to be understood as interests shared by groups of people, potentially corresponding to the aspirations of a whole occupational class or large segments of society. The attempt is made here to develop a coherent and practically minded theory that, by being supported in the well-defined concepts of diffuse, collective and homogenous individual interests, may allow the overcoming of the present state of the art, entangled as it is in ambiguous concepts, and the development of the collective action as an accessible and procedurally useful instrument. Within this context, the labor union comes out as an adequate representative of said interests, as an ideological plaintiff that is entitled to file the corresponding lawsuit. More precisely, the scientific community is provided here with a theory that demonstrates not just the legitimacy of labor unions in filing such actions –as both legal history and comparative law attest - but also their special aptitude for judicially protecting the efficacy of labor law and for the enforcement social rights, including those that, although contemplated in the Constitution, have a more rarefied content. The use of foreign law and comparative law itself strengthens the notion that judicial acting by labor unions ought to surpass that which is allowed for by traditional and timid conceptions. This research methodology not only unveils the way in which labor unions actively pursue labor and social rights in other legal systems, but also and mainly requires a new perspective regarding union-filed judicial lawsuits in Portugal. This new perspective requires, on the one hand, deeper and more thorough rethinking regarding the institute of “procedural substitution” (as it appears in art. 5, nº 2 of the national Code of Labor Procedure) so as to understand it as part of a larger system of interest protection and, on the other hand, the acknowledgment of the vast potential inherent in the right to actio popularis as defined under art. 52, n. 3 of the Portuguese Constitution.
