In this paper, we first generalize the theorem about the existence of an enveloping action to a partial twisted smash product. Then we construct a Morita context between the partial twisted smash product and the twisted smash product related to the enveloping action. Finally, we present versions of the duality theorems of Blattner-Montgomery for partial twisted smash products.

This thesis focuses on the study of (rational) actions of infinitesimal group schemes, with a particular emphasis on infinitesimal commutative unipotent group schemes and generically free actions and faithful actions. For any finite k-group scheme G acting rationally on a k-variety X, if the action is generically free then the dimension of Lie(G) is upper bounded by the dimension of the variety. We show that this is the only obstruction when k is a perfect field of positive characteristic and G is infinitesimal commutative trigonalizable. If G is unipotent, we also show that any generically free rational action on X of (any power of) the Frobenius kernel of G extends to a generically free rational action of G on X. Moreover, we give necessary conditions to have faithful rational actions of infinitesimal commutative trigonalizable group schemes on varieties, and (different) sufficient conditions in the unipotent case over a perfect field. Studying faithful group scheme actions on a variety X yields information on representable subgroups of the automorphism group functor AutX of X. For any field k, PGL2,k represents the automorphism group functor of P1 k and thus subgroup schemes of PGL2,k correspond to faithful actions on P1 k. Moreover, PGL2,k(k) coincides with the Cremona group in dimension one, i.e. birational self-maps of P1 k, since any rational self-map of a projective non-singular curve extends to the whole curve. In positive characteristic, the situation is completely different if we consider rational actions of infinitesimal group schemes. Most of the faithful infinitesimal actions on the affine line do not extend to P1 k. If the characteristic of a field k is odd, any infinitesimal subgroup scheme of PGL2,k lifts to SL2,k. This is not true in characteristic 2 and, in this case, we give a complete description, up to isomorphism, of infinitesimal unipotent subgroup schemes of PGL2,k. Finally, we prove a result that gives an explicit description of all infinitesimal commutative unipotent k-group schemes with one-dimensional Lie algebra defined over an algebraically closed field k, showing that there are exactly n non-isomorphic such group schemes of fixed order pn

Resumo:
The study of deformations of an algebra has been a topic of interest for quite some time, since it allows us to not only produce new algebras but also better understand the original algebra. Given an algebra, finding all its deformations is, if at all possible, quite a challenging problem. For this reason, several specializations of this question have been proposed. For instance, some authors concentrate their efforts in the study of deformations of an algebra arising from an action of a Hopf algebra. The purpose of this dissertation is to discuss a general construction of a deformation of a smash product algebra coming from an action of a particular Hopf algebra. This Hopf algebra is generated by skew-primitive and group-like elements, and depends on a complex parameter. The smash product algebra is defined on the quantum symmetric algebra of a nite-dimensional vector space and a group. In particular, an application of this result has enabled us to find a deformation of such a smash product algebra which is, to the best of our knowledge, the first known example of a deformation in which the new relations in the deformed algebra involve elements of the original vector space. Finally, using Hochschild cohomology, we show that these deformations are nontrivial.

AbstractWith aging, a combination of gravitational forces, laxity of the skin due to loss of elasticity, decreased dermal thickness and loss of dermal appendages results in ptotic, hanging skin. Face lift or rhytidectomy as its name suggest is a procedure to partially eliminate folds, creases and wrinkles (rhytids) caused by gravity and degeneration. The creation of two large cervicofacial flaps which after suspension and trimming, produces an overall tightening the skin and the fascial envelope of the face and neck results in restored anatomical structure. Treatment of the SMAS layer is important and can be broadly categorized into 3 methods. They are plication, elevation and imbrication and SMASectomy. Platysma elevation and plication can be carried out simultaneously for the neck. Face lift can help to negate some of these gravitational problems and produce some intrinsic improvement. Complications include haematoma, skin ischaemia and necrosis, obvious scarring, sensory disturbances, motor nerve disturbances and ear lobe irregularities.

Since the early discovery in 1951 [1], shape memory alloys (SMAs) have been used in design and development of several innovative engineering systems. SMAs’ unique characteristics have introduced unconventional alternatives in design and development of advanced devices. SMA’s field of applications has covered many areas from aerospace to auto industries, and medical devices [2]. During the past couple of decades, scientists have suggested material models to predict the SMA’s shape memory effect (SME) and its superelastic behavior. The superelastic characteristic of SMAs (its capability to exhibit a large recoverable strain) has been widely used to develop innovative products including biomedical implants such as stents, artificial heart valves, orthodontic wires, frames of indestructible spectacles, etc. However, its actuation capabilities, known as SME, hasn’t been thoroughly expanded. The number of products privileging from SMA’s SME behavior has been very limited. The reason relies on the SMA’s complex material properties that depend on the stress, strain and temperature at every stage of actuation as well as the material’s processing and the thermomechanical loading history.

Abstract Solar concentrators increase the amount of usable energy available in solar collection systems by focusing energy through an aperture to which energy is magnified within the area of its trajectory. Design challenges of a solar concentrators for space applications are to make them more lightweight, compact, and exhibit a smooth and consistent reflective surface curvature for optimal performance. Shape memory alloys (SMAs) offer an effective and compact solution to engineering needs, such as solar reflectors, to reduce weight and improve overall energy collection and concentration performance. The one-way shape memory effect can be used for this application, where the SMA is heat treated in a strained designed curvature by forcing the austenite microstructure to “remember” the original shape even after deformation. SMAs are capable of actuating from the stow configuration and into the designed shape after the solar energy exposure induces a phase transformation. In this study, NiTi and NiTiCu SMAs were thermomechanically processed into plates and cut into three sizes of triangular chips for use as reflector components. Standard binary NiTi SMAs was modified with the substitution of Cu for Ni to achieve a narrower hysteresis and better thermomechanical cycling stability. The SMAs were produced from commercially available NiTi SM495 plates by ATI Specialty Alloys and Components (Albany, OR) and custom-melted NiTiCu buttons. Each processing step was comprehensively characterized to monitor microstructural and thermomechanical property changes using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Vickers hardness (HV). The NiTi and NiTiCu triangular chips were shape-set utilizing a custom-made apparatus to attain the intended curved surface with specific dimensions for a reflector component within a solar concentrator.

Sensory disorders characterise 90% of individuals with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD); however, each individual is unique. Hoyo is an innovative product that fits the single sensory profile of the child. The device provides complex sensorial stimulation to the trunk of the user’s body thanks to a series of inflatable bladders. To do so, Hoyo features shape memory alloys (SMAs), which provide a compact, lightweight, and silent system. Indeed, such properties are all essential characteristics for a product dedicated to ASD. Therapists can program the system to adapt Hoyo to the child’s needs rather than asking the child to accommodate an existing product. Being able to release the tension caused by an over-stimulating environment is the first step towards achieving a higher level of inclusion in the educational system.

Shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators have been increasingly found applications due to their low weight and high power capacity. Additionally they are able to function as a sensor. Upon phase transformation, the material changes its electrical resistance. Phase transformation in SMAs occurs either by loading or heating the material. Since SMAs materials are usually metals, heat can be produced by passing an electric current through the alloy. This idea in mind, the present work reports the development of electronic circuits for power supply, current measurement and voltage measurement for shape memory alloy actuators. For validation of the operation of the designed circuits, a NiTi helical spring type alloy actuator was tested. The actuator was mounted on a mechanical platform; it was possible to determine its thermal behavior and force generation. Characteristic operation curves of the helical spring type actuator are presented.

Abstract The generation and variation of forces necessary to achieve a training stimulus is often realized in sports and rehabilitation equipment by manually adjustable masses or by complex motor-brake systems. This leads to heavy and unwieldy systems, which cannot be used flexibly, and in addition to high costs. The main objective of this paper is to prove that pseudoelastic shape memory alloys (SMA) are potentially suitable for use in sports and rehabilitation equipment and offer additional value in the area of training flexibility combined with high training resistance. Therefore, the properties of pseudoelastic SMAs for this application were investigated. These multifunctional materials offer the potential for special elastic and sensory properties. The pseudoelastic effect is based on stress-induced martensite formation, which allows high elastic deformations. During this phase transformation, the mechanical stress passes through a plateau. The stress plateau can be moved by changing the temperature of the SMA. The determination of properties of pseudoelastic SMAs with different alloy compositions was carried out according to the specifications of “VDI 2248: Product Development with Shape Memory Technology”. With a functional model based on the material tests, which replaces a commercially available force clamping device, the monitoring of force, displacement and temperature changes can be realized by the integrated sensor technology. This paper presents the methodology, experiments and findings for the use of pseudoelastic SMAs in sport and rehabilitation devices. It concludes with prospects to commercial application.

Processing of Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) shape memory alloys (SMAs) is challenging because smallest compositional variances and all types of microstructural features strongly affect the elementary processes of the martensitic transformation and thus the functional properties of the material. Against this background, powder metallurgical near net shape methods are attractive for the production of NiTi components. Especially additive manufacturing technologies (AM) seem to provide high potential, although they have received only little attention for processing NiTi so far. This work is the first to report on pseudoelastic properties of additive manufactured Ni-rich NiTi. We show how to establish pseudoelasticity in NiTi samples prepared by the additive manufacturing technique Selective Laser Melting (SLM). Therefore, we analyze phase transformation behavior, mechanical characteristics and functional properties of our materials subjected to different heat treatments. The obtained results are compared to the behavior of conventional NiTi. The presented results clearly indicate that SLM provides a promising processing route for the fabrication of high quality NiTi parts.

Actuators as a major component of all mechanical systems require improving in size, power, noise and simplicity. In most presented actuators, there is no such feature of suitable positioning of load, variable stiffness/force and active shock damping simultaneously. Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) can be a suitable choice for providing the above capabilities in the systems. Especially the spring type SMAs are less utilized in the developed SMA based systems. SMA springs in comparison to SMA wires may provide much more deflection although less force is produced through them. This property may tend to a more flexibility in the developed mechanisms. Additionally the actuator capability in controlling position and force is not presented in the works. In this paper, an actuator with one DOF utilizing SMA springs with the above features is considered. The actuator mechanism is based on the antagonistic application of SMA springs that provide faster actuation response and controllable stiffness. It is shown that such an actuator demonstrates a good positioning accuracy in addition to a higher level force and stiffness control capability. As a result, the mechanical systems with such actuator behave more flexible with less bodily damage while encountering environment.

Abstract Due to their manifold application possibilities, shape memory alloys (SMA) become more and more common in all kinds of industrial tasks. For an operation in mass-manufactured products, it is inevitable to investigate the fundamental properties of the respective material and to perfect the fabrication process. A potential use of SMAs in aerospace is even more demanding, since the testing and qualification is quite complex, and the components are solely built in small batch series. In order to prove possible approaches for manufacturing, for this paper several specimens of two generations of an intelligent redundant spacecraft actuator were assembled. Evaluating the intrinsic effect of SMA-wires, it was possible to detect signs of fatigue in the material and realize preventive maintenance. Beside a description of the manufacturing steps of both generations, the test results are presented in detail and it can be concluded that the second generation is, due to its design, more suitable for a serial production as well as more robust and efficient.
