The article concerns relations between Slovaks and the Hungarian minority in Slovakia. The aim of this study is to determine current Slovak attitudes towards the Slovak Hungarians and to analyse differences in attitudes held by Slovaks in regular direct contact with the Hungarian minority and those with almost no contact. Another aim is to map current attitudes among the Hungarian minority towards the Slovak majority, and to find out how Slovak attitudes are perceived by the minority. The data collection methods were a survey (N = 107) and focus group interviews (N = 36). The results show that Slovaks in regular contact with Slovak Hungarians have significantly more positive general feelings, are less socially distant, and feel less anxious about the Hungarian minority than Slovaks with almost no contact. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of trust and behavioural intention. Group interviews with Slovaks and Slovak Hungarians showed that the biggest obstacle in relations between Slovaks and the Hungarian minority is first language use and the language barrier.

In this paper, I reflect on Božena Němcová’s Slovenské pohádky a pověsti [Slovak fairy tales and legends] (1857-1858) as an example par excellence of Czech-Slovak literary relations: in this collection, Němcová offered to Czech readers fairy tales collected on the territory of today’s Slovakia, using Czech with elements of Slovak in the voice of the narrator and Slovak in the voices of the characters. The remarks I wish to make concern three contexts in which I situate Němcová’s collection: correspondence, source material, and book culture. Němcová’s correspondence, I show, is the only source of information on the genesis of the collection. It contains Němcová’s private version of the story of the origins of Slovak Fairy Tales and Legends. Although compatible in detail with the information published in her preface to the book, this version cannot be checked against other sources and the views of contemporaries. Based on fairy tale manuscripts, which were used for book editions of fairy tales that appeared in Slovakia in the 19th century, I further show that Němcová’s collection influenced Pavel Dobšinský’s Prostonárodné slovenské povesti [National Slovak Legends] (1880-1883) not only in terms of the composition of genres and content, as has already been demonstrated by others several times, but also in more minute details (character names). Finally, I am interested in book culture, namely the editions of Narodní báchorky a pověsti [National tales and legends](1845-1847) and Slovenské pohádky a pověsti (Slovak fairy tales and legends) that appeared after Němcová’s death. I show how editorial practice in Czechia and Slovakia gradually blurred the distinctions between collections of Czech and Slovak fairy tales, leading to readers in both parts of the Czechoslovak republic eventually receiving tales whose original cultural, folkloric and linguistic contexts were de-emphasized.

The study of the emergence of the Czecho-Slovak volunteer units that acted as a part of the armies of the Allies in military operations on the fronts of the World War I has become over the past 30 years one of the most significant areas in modern historical science. Today we have at our disposal a great quantity of articles, collections of documents and other scholarly and popular works in which different aspects of these issues are analyzed. The “Czechoslovak Legions – Slovaks – Slovakia” collection of articles, published in 2022 and edited by P. Chorvat and M. Posch, is one of such works. Its authors are the historians from Slovakia, Czechia, Russia, Italy and Japan. The book is concerned with the history of creation of Czecho-Slovak military forces on the territory of Russia, France, and Italy. It is also devoted to their participation in hostilities during the period of Civil War in Russia, the lives of some prominent Slovak legionaries in the interwar period and their engagement in the Czechoslovak resistance movement during World War II. The survey of these problems is conducted not only in the context of traditional methodology of historical research but also in the frameworks of gender studies, economic history and history of everyday life.

The article traces the process of formation of archival Rossica in one of the oldest archives of the Slovak Republic. The authors analyze documentary materials on the history of the Slovak-Russian contacts in the 19th century, the period when ties between Slovak and Russian scientists and public figures were most intense. It was at this time that the process of national identity formation of the Slovaks took place. The article is to investigate the content of documents from the standpoint of methodology of historical memory and that of principles of historicism. Despite the fact that the history of the Slovak-Russian relations has been in the focus of attention of national and foreign scientists for many years, there are no special scientific studies in which archival materials on this issue would be systematized. In the modern historiographic situation, as there continues a “revision” of previous assessments of the history of the Slovak-Russian relations, the role of archival heritage increases, and yet its significant part has not been introduced into scientific use. In historical science, the most important archive for reconstruction of the history of the Slovak-Russian contacts in the 19th century is the archive of the Slovak Matica. This organization was created by order of the Austro-Hungarian authorities in Martin, city in the East of Slovakia. In the 19th century the Slovak Matica was a center of social life of the Slovaks and played an important role in the formation of the Slovak nation. The article details the complex history of the formation of the archival Rossica collection in the archive of Martin and all stages of its emergence and development. The archive of the Slovak Matica has undergone significant organizational changes over a century and a half of its existence. It is currently called the Archives of Literature and Art of the Slovak National Library (ALI SNB). The authors systematize the archival Rossica in the ALI SNB by the nature of documents and problems. The article provides an overview of the main groups of archival collections and fonds that preserve the historical evidence on nature and intensity of the Slovak-Russian contacts in the 19th century. An analysis of archival materials has shown that these relations developed mainly at the level of personal contacts between Slovak and Russian scientists, writers, and public figures. The authors of the article conclude that the Rossica in the archives of Slovakia still remains an incompletely developed topic for researchers, primarily for Russian ones. Study of the archival Rossica acquires special significance in modern humanities, as there continues a revision of previous assessments of historical events, facts, and actions of national movements leaders.

The association of nationalist consciousness and feminist ideology in Slovakia in the late nineteenth century was a protracted and uneven process. This conclusion rests upon the results of this study which examines the feminist and nationalist views of Slovak women intelligentsia who were at the forefront of Slovak nationalist efforts. It explores responses of leading Slovak women to the following issues of nationalist concern: traditional Slovak patriarchy, women's education, and Western feminism. It demonstrates that in Slovakia, gender was not the primary factor determining women's loyalties; there were other connecting allegiances and loyalties to the nation and the community. Slovak women developed their own unique concept of gender equality that aided Slovak nationalist efforts. In doing so they employed the language of motherhood, domestic duties, and religious commitment.Around the turn of the century, a small group of Slovak women intelligentsia attempted to reconcile their own agenda with contemporary nationalist, social, and political currents. Spurred by nationalist efforts of the Slovak male intelligentsia, middle-class women tried to determine what type of new nationalist woman should replace the traditional woman. This question was answered by five women, in four very distinct ways: (1) Ľudmila Ríznerová-Podjavorinská portrayed the goals of Western feminism as a danger to Slovaks; (2) Elena Maróthy-Šolthésová and Terézia Medvecká Vansová encouraged the growth of Christian feminism; (3) Marína Ormisová-Maliaková favored the introduction of pragmatic feminism in Slovak nationalist efforts; and (4) Hana Lilge-Gregorová argued for the establishment of Western feminism as the basis of social and national development. Although the personal lives of these five women represent the social and national distress of the Slovak people, they also show women's fight for the acceptance of new ideas which would improve the fate of their sisters and their nation. Yet this small collection of feminist intellectuals could not and did not effect Slovak public opinion in any substantial way. Their influence, except perhaps that of Hana Lilge-Gregorová, did not stretch beyond the Slovak urban middle-class milieu.

The paper is an evaluation study of the biographical work of Karol Andel, who, as a civil servant in the interwar and post-war periods, devoted himself to the amateur collection of ethnographic material and the search for archaeological sites. His work refuted opinions of the prehistoric sterility of many regions, and also laid the foundations of many ethnographic and archaeological collections in Slovakia – in Kysuce Záhorie, Levoča and Bojnice, and at the Slovak National Museum in Bratislava. In his fieldwork he collaborated with respected authorities of archaeology and ethnography in Slovakia, including J. Eisner, V. Budinský-Krička, Š. Janšák, B. Szöke, R. Bednárik and M. Markuš. Thanks to his lifelong professional work and passion, he eventually became a researcher at the Ethnographic Institute, and later the Archaeological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

AbstractThe paper focuses on selected folklorist and ethnological activities during the inter-war period, financially supported by the Board for the Research of Slovakia and Subcarpathian Ruthenia, which was established on the initiative of T. G. Masaryk as part of the newly created Slavic Institute in Prague in 1928. This institution aimed to support links between Slovakia and the so-called Czech historical lands and the expressions of “mutuality” in the scientific, cultural or ethnic and language area, etc. The Board provided grants for conducting dialectological, folklorist, geographical and other projects, e.g. for the collection initiative of F. Wollman and his students in Bratislava and Brno in 1928–1947, covering Slovak and (yet unprocessed) Moravian folk fiction. Support was also granted to the research of music culture (D. Orel, K. Hudec, F. Zagriba, etc.), the collection of anthropological and ethnographical materials (K. Chotek, K. Domin, etc.), the study of Slovak folk embroidery (V. Pražák), folklore customs and practices (P. Bogatyrev), folk wood architecture (V. Sičynskyj, D. Stránská), Slovak dialects studied, for example, by V. Vážný, member of the Board, etc. The Slovak Encyclopaedia project, today already forgotten, was not completed. Its editors included historian V. Chaloupecký and, in particular, K. Chotek who prepared the concept of the work in 1930.

For this study, we used the Web of Science as a main database for data collection. Collected data were analysed with descriptive statistics, co-occurrence, citation and co-citation analyses. Visualization of these analyses was proceeded by VOSviewer. Separately we analysed the case of the Slovak Republic. Our results show that Slovakia has a huge time gap with other countries but the positive is that Slovak researchers are in step with worldwide popular areas of intellectual capital. This study offers a wide range of the current state of researching intellectual capital worldwide and separately for the Slovak Republic.

In the Slovak Republic, the pandemic situation has brought a new competence to legislate for public health authorities. Such delegated law-making and also the manner of their publication in the official publication instrument became the subject of a review before the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic. The paper provides a look at the Constitutional Court's decision of December 2021, which stabilised the "Corona" delegated law-making competence of state authorities in the field of public health, both at the central and local level, and the publication of such decrees in the Journal of the Government of the Slovak Republic. The decision of the Constitutional Court confirmed the existence and functionality of the so-called main and the so-called secondary official publication instrument in the Slovak Republic (the Collection of Laws of the Slovak Republic and the Journal of the Government of the Slovak Republic), both of which have their historical predecessors from the second half of the 19th century, both Hungarian and Czechoslovak. The paper also summarises the themes that arise from this decision for legal science, in particular delegated law-making, delegated law-creator, promulgation of legal regulations and official publication instruments in Slovakia.

Abstract Collecting activities were an important cultural and social phenomenon in 19th century Europe. Women also participated in these activities, although in many cultures their role and the results of their collecting work have not yet been adequately evaluated. Taking the example of Slovakia, it is possible to highlight the contribution of women in collecting folk songs, while encompassing those features which are specific to the regional circumstances. Women took part in all important collecting projects of the 19th century in Slovakia. Reconstruction of their socio-cultural background highlighted the fact that at the inception of these projects women of the aristocracy and gentry were active collectors. The majority of female collectors came from families of the Slovak intelligentsia, who belonged to the middle class. By the end of the 19th century many such families had become part of the contemporary elite of Slovak society. We focus on two research questions: 1, how did the gender category of the collector condition the record of song material (an aspect of the collection concept); and 2, what contribution did women’s collecting activities make to the study of traditional song culture (an aspect of the collected material). A definition of women’s concept of collecting, with primary orientation on song lyrics, was deduced from the 19th century preference for the national language and the role of Slovak women in its diffusion in private as well as public life, and from analysis of the genre structure of the collected material. The romantic concept of collecting in Slovakia is compared with an early concept of documentation at the beginning of the 20th century which derived from abroad, although some of its elements were beginning to take effect also in domestic collecting activities.

At the turn of the 20th century, Slovaks faced new national challenges in the political and social conditions of Austria-Hungary. The Hungarisation efforts of the Hungarian government along with frequent accusations of pan-Slavism motivated a part of Slovak students coming from a nationally conscious environment to leave for studies in the Czech part of the monarchy. From its foundation in 1882, the Detvan association in Prague planned to develop educational and literary activities with an emphasis on the Slovak language and culture. This led to an urgent need for the establishment of the association’s own library, which could be used by its members. The article focuses its attention on the creation and systematic expansion and improvement of the book collection of the Detvan association between 1882 and the end of the 19th century. It primarily deals with the growth, subdivision and genre profiling of the library and, last but not least, also with lending activities, closely associated with that.

In 2022, a collection of articles “Modern Slovakistics ― Coordinates and Vectors” was published, based on the materials of an international scientific conference that took place on 04/28/2021 in Sofia and was dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the beginning of teaching of Slovak language at the University of St. Kliment Ohridsky. The authors of the articles ― scholars and teachers from Bulgaria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Russia, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Germany ― consider a whole range of problems related to teaching students in specialties related to the Slovak language, culture, literature, translation skills. The book uses two languages ― Bulgarian and Slovak. The articles are grouped into four sections corresponding to the four main areas in Slovakian studies. The section “The Slovak language in the European context” examines the problems of history and current state of the language, its comparative and culturological aspects. The thematic spectrum of the section “Slovak literature in the European context” ranges from comparative studies and the links of literature with fine arts to trends in modern prose. The articles in the section “Slovak language and translation as a linguistic and cultural phenomenon” are devoted to the traditions of Slovak-Bulgarian literary translations, issues of adequacy and difficulties in translation work. The section “Teaching the Slovak language as a foreign language” contains articles on the peculiarities of the methodology of teaching the Slovak language at Slavic departments, on the problems of grammar of the Slovak language in theoretical and practical terms. A significant number of articles, the quality of research, and the breadth of the authors’ professional interests testify to the importance of the interchange of cultural and spiritual values in the Slavic world.

The study presents the results of research into the use of toponyms in Jablonca (Silická Jablonica), a Hungarian settlement in Slovakia. According to the results of the 2021 census 91.76% of the population in this border village is of Hungarian nationality. The village community is characterised by Hungarian-Slovak bilingualism. Consequently, the place-name collection revealed both Hungarian and Slovak place names for some areas. The paper describes the sociological aspects of the research, which aimed to investigate the inhabitants’ knowledge of place names. The paper reviews the non-lingual factors that influence the knowledge of place names. Research was conducted via interviews, questionnaires and asking respondents to draw a mental map. The results showed that place of birth, ethnicity and mother tongue, as well as occupation and leisure activities, are the main factors that determine knowledge of place names. Hungarian dominates the residents’ place name use, with only a minority knowing place names in Slovak (i.e., those shown on a map). The study of place-name knowledge within the family shows the importance of family knowledge in the transmission of place-names.

Among the works that stand out in the Baroque sculpture collection of the Slovak National Gallery (SNG) is the figure of the Saviour by Georg Leonhard Weber of Świdnica. Surveys conducted in Slovak, Czech and Polish museums, combined with field studies, have made it possible to provide hitherto unexplored artistic context of the work. They have made it possible to trace the formal origins of the Bratislava Saviour as well as its later imitations. The sculpture is carved with virtuosic precision; it develops a concept derived from ancient art and is the finest example of Weber’s early oeuvre. Also, it constitutes a link between works made in his workshop over four decades. The present study demonstrates the advantages of an interdisciplinary and international analysis of museum collections. It highlights the significance of the sculpture in question to Central European cultural heritage, expanding the knowledge of museum collections in three different countries.

Current development of information technology offers a wide number of possible data collection approaches, but it is often limited by economic or legal barriers. Cities in Slovakia have a wide range of possible data sources available concerning their inhabitants, services and properties. However, targeted data collection is often lacking when it comes to transport. Larger cities face problems related to traffic congestion and safety, where data of sufficient quality is essential for managing traffic flows and monitoring the condition of roads and parking. This paper focuses on analyzing experience from other countries that use IoT devices to collect data in the field of transport. The goal is to provide inspiration and guidelines for the effective collection of relevant data in Slovak cities. The introduction of these technologies could contribute to better traffic management, increased traffic safety and more efficient use of parking capacities, which would significantly contribute to the development of smart and sustainable cities in Slovakia.

AbstractMicrosatellites were used as a very effective tool for genetic diversity analysis and characterization of 51 grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) accessions from the national collection of genetic resources. Genetic diversity was relatively high, 8.91 alleles were detected per analysed microsatellite locus in average, and fifty-one accessions were distinguished into 45 groups. Distribution of recent Slovak cultivars across the dendrogram accented both their genetic diversity and the effectiveness of the national breeding program in maintaining genetic diversity and generating new genetic variants. Each cultivar was different from the others and twelve of them contained 77.6% of the total genetic diversity of the whole analysed set. Microsatellite patterns were also able to confirm parentage in selected Slovak cultivars. An unusual phenomenon of triallelism was also detected in one of the analysed accessions. The present study has initiated molecular characterization within the national grapevine genetic resource collection and their comparison with well-established international cultivars.

One of Slovakia’s globalization tendencies is the successful introduction of the Eurocurrency. It has been 10 years since the introduction of the euro in Slovakia. It is a sufficient time for us to continuously assess the real situation and attitudes of the citizens in this area. There are several publicly available studies, research findings conducted by Eurobarometer, Fincenter or the National bank, which focus on advantages and disadvantages of the euro currency. The most frequently mentioned advantages are price stability, transaction cost decrease in foreign trade and tourism, Slovak export increase and the removal of exchange rate risk. On the other side, Slovakia has lost its independent monetary policy and the member country is also expected to participate in the euro area rescue mechanism. Similarly the research team of the Faculty of Economics of J. Selye University was invited by Hungarian Pallas Athene Domus Educationis Foundation to participate in the research project named ten years of euro – Slovak experience. Based on this project initiative, the aim of the paper is to find out the experience regarding the euro among citizens, also with an emphasis on cross-border activity. In order to achieve the research objectives we applied primary data collection to obtain information about the researched issue. An anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted among the respondents. Data collection among the residents was realized with a help of an agent, but also an online questionnaire was provided for the respondents in 2018. Statistic indicators were used to verify our assumptions.

A set of 49 chickpea accessions maintained in the collection of the Genebank of the Slovak Republic was analyzed using microsatellite markers. The level of genetic diversity and the effectivity of new germplasm acquisition for the collection enrichment were evaluated. Five primer pairs used generated 50 different amplified alleles. Four of them, TA2, TA5, TR1, and TR7, containing a long TAA-tandem repeat, were polymorphic with 11–13 alleles per locus. A single fragment was obtained from all the accessions with the primer pair CATPER flanking a small microsatellite repetition in the mRNA sequence of chickpea cationic peroxidase. The genetic diversity was expressed as a diversity index (DI) and polymorphic information content (PIC) with values in the range from 0.885 to 0.904 and from 0.972 to 0.991, respectively. Recently acquired new germplasm contributed 13 new alleles to the entire collection, i.e. almost 70% of microsatellite diversity originated from the recently acquired accessions. Remarkable is also, that one accession carries a unique allel, not present in the remaining collection. Microsatellite analysis revealed the importance of collecting missions for the enrichment of collections of genetic resources.

An understudied ecosystem such as a rural area can hold many surprises. In this paper we report the results of a collection at a rural site in eastern Slovakia using a single Malaise trap over a five-month period. From May to September 2023, 70 species of the Diptera family Phoridae were found there, 19 of which represent new species for the Slovak fauna (one sp. of the genus Aenigmatias and 18 spp. of the genus Megaselia). The species richness of the Phoridae fauna in Slovakia has thus increased by almost 9% to 229 species. It is very likely that more intensive research will yield many more interesting records and greatly increase our knowledge of Slovakia’s biodiversity.

In the light of the increasing importance of the societal impact of research, this article attempts to address the question as to how social sciences and humanities (SSH) research outputs from 2019 are represented in Slovak research portfolios in comparison with those of the EU-28 and the world. The data used for the analysis originate from the R&D SK CRIS and bibliographic Central Register of Publication Activities (CREPČ) national databases, and WoS Core Collection/InCites. The research data were appropriate for the analysis at the time they were structured, on the national level; of high quality and consistency; and covering as many components as possible and in mutual relations. The data resources should enable the research outputs to be assigned to research categories. The analysis prompts the conclusion that social sciences and humanities research outputs in Slovakia in 2019 are appropriately represented and in general show an increasing trend. This can be documented by the proportion represented by the SSH research projects and other entities involved in the overall Slovak research outputs, and even the higher ratio of SSH research publications in comparison with the EU-28 and the world. Recommendations of a technical character include research data management, data quality, and the integration of individual systems and available analytical tools.

In economic terms Slovakia has been one of the most successful transition countries, but its advance towards the rule of law has been uneven and beset with numerous difficulties. While in the 1990s the judiciary increased its reputation considerably by standing up in the defense of democracy, it lost face only shortly later because of its apparent inability to prevent court corruption from spreading. Only quite recently government managed to take effective measures against it. Nevertheless debt collection has become much less of a problem than it used to be in the 1990s and liquidity constraints have been greatly relieved. This change seems only to a minor part due to increasing judicial efficiency which has made slow progress only. Thus, Slovak experience has reconfirmed the conjecture that erecting the rule of law takes much more time than transforming the economic system.

Objective: Analysis of maternal mortality in the Slovak Republic in the years 2007–2018. Methods: The analysis of selected maternal mortality data in the years 2007–2018. Results: In the years 2007–2018, 84 women died during pregnancy or within 42 days of the end of pregnancy – maternal mortality ratio was 12.57 per 100,000 live births. Direct maternal mortality ratio in this period was 4.64 (31 maternal deaths), indirect maternal mortality 6.74 (45 maternal deaths) and direct obstetrics death ratio was 11.38 per 100,000 live births. Pregnancyassociated but unrelated maternal death ratio was 1.19 (eight maternal deaths). The Slovak Gynecological and Obstetric Society revealed a 64% underestimation of maternal mortality data in comparison with routine statistical data. Conclusion: Maternal mortality ratio in the Slovak Republic was one of the highest in the European Union and was discordant with a good level of perinatal mortality. In the Slovak Republic, it is necessary to look for ways to reduce maternal mortality and improve data collection. Keys word: maternal mortality – maternal mortality ratio – direct obstetrics deaths – indirect obstetrics deaths – pregnancy-related deaths

His cryptographic experience was of no use in his new position. To profit from his previous experience as a high qualified cryptographer he started to study the accessible literature and archive materials about the usage of the Czechoslovak cipher systems during the WWII. The result of this his activity were some manuscripts where he deciphered and analyzed some Czechoslovak military wireless telegrams. His critical analysis and his conclusions did not meet an understanding or a positive response of historians and were nor accepted for publication. He had no other chance as to send them to archives. Unfortunately only one (in two copies) and a collection of small notes survived. The aim of this paper is to make decisive technical parts of manuscript [K. Abstract The paper describes methodology for creating a Slovak database of speech under stress and pilot observations. While the relationship between stress and speech characteristics can be utilized in a wide domain of speech technology applications, its research suffers from the lack of suitable databases, particularly in conversational speech. We propose a novel procedure to record acted speech in the home of actors and using their own smartphones. We describe both the collection of speech material under three levels of stress and the subsequent annotation of stress levels in this material. First observations suggest a reasonable inter-annotator agreement, as well as interesting avenues for the relationship between the intended stress levels and those perceived in speech.

Among the bestsellers are, as a rule, works of popular genres, including detective stories, women’s novels, political thrillers, novels with elements of mysticism. Other criteria are put forward by the jury of prestigious literary competitions, first of all, the Anasoft Litera Award for the best original prose literary work in the Slovak language. In more detail, the article discusses the books of the winners in the recent years. These are Ondrej Štefánik (the novel “I am Paula”, 2016), Ivan Medeši (the collection of short stories “Eating”, 2018), Jana Sabuchová (the novel “Whisperers”, 2019). Etela Farkašová’s novel “The Script” (2017), due to its high artistic merits and humanistic orientation, was a great success with both critics and readers.

The article describes the creation of initial three dimensional geodatabase from planning and designing through the determination of technological and manufacturing processes to practical using of Central Geospatial Database (CGD – official name in Slovak language is Centrálna Priestorová Databáza – CPD) and shortly describes procedures of its revision. CGD ensures proper collection, processing, storing, transferring and displaying of digital geospatial information. CGD is used by Ministry of Defense (MoD) for defense and crisis management tasks and by Integrated rescue system. For military personnel CGD is run on MoD intranet, and for other users outside of MoD is transmutated to ZbGIS (Primary Geodatabase of Slovak Republic) and is run on public web site. CGD is a global set of geo-spatial information. CGD is a vector computer model which completely covers entire territory of Slovakia. Seamless CGD is created by digitizing of real world using of photogrammetric stereoscopic methods and measurements of objects properties. Basic vector model of CGD (from photogrammetric processing) is then taken out to the field for inspection and additional gathering of objects properties in the whole area of mapping. Finally real-world objects are spatially modeled as a entities of three-dimensional database. CGD gives us opportunity, to get know the territory complexly in all the three spatial dimensions. Every entity in CGD has recorded the time of collection, which allows the individual to assess the timeliness of information. CGD can be utilized for the purposes of geographical analysis, geo-referencing, cartographic purposes as well as various special-purpose mapping and has the ambition to cover the needs not only the MoD, but to become a reference model for the national geographical infrastructure.

Background: Ján Stacho is an eminent Slovak author (1936–1995) who first has published in 1959. Two years later he became member of the so-called Trnava group, made up of him, Ján Ondruš, Jozef Mihalkovič and Ľubomír Feldek. The group’s poet-ics and aesthetics can be found in their manifestos – “There will be a talk about chil-dren's poetry”, “There will be a talk about translation” and “There will be a talk about poetry”, the last of which is lost. Ján Ondruš’s debut book “Wedding Journey“ was first published in 1961. His poems and one of the group’s literary manifestos are the subject of the present study. Purpose: The article examines the idea of childhood memory as “natural memory”. The concept is found in the poetry of Ján Ondruš, who is part of the Slovak poetry Trnava group. His poems serve the purpose of the article – to look at the realizations of the concretists’ theoretical views in the poems of the author mentioned above. Results: The article outlines the concept of memory, which we find in the aesthetic platform of the Slovak Trnava group, specifically in their manifesto “There will be a talk about children's literature.” In this text, the authors plead for writing poetry that is not “sucked from the finger” but is “squeezed” from memory. We deduce the “uses” of memory from the texts of one of the Trnava groups’ representatives, Ján Stacho. The subject of our research is his debut poetry collection from 1961, “Wedding Journey.” In his poems, we connect memory – as childhood and natural – with the metaphor of “salt-ing the senses” and the naive, unencumbered “sensing” the world to grasp the latter. We also include an intertextual reference to the text "Memory" of another poet from the Trnava group Ján Ondruš, which representatives refer to as one of their program’s works. Abstract The work is focused on the evaluation of variability of morphological and pomological characteristics of several old sweet cherries (Prunus avium L.) that were found in different Slovak regions. The experimental work has been performed during two years, 2014 and 2015. The following characteristics according to the descriptor list of subgenus Cerasus were evaluated - period of flowering and ripening, morphological characteristics of the flowers, fruit size, fruit weight, and quality parameters. The results showed high variability of evaluated accessions. From the 13 surveyed localities, the most valuable accessions were found in the locality Hornį Streda - places Čachtice, Krakovany, Nitra, and Brdárka. During the collecting expeditions, 170 accessions of sweet cherry, with fruit of the different quality were found. The most interesting accessions were grafted onto rootstocks with different intensity of growth (Prunus avium L., Prunus mahaleb L., and ‘Gisela5’). Some of the selected cherry accessions can be used for commercial growing after tests, while some of them can be used only for collection of genetic resources and as potential genitors in breeding programmes.

Research background: The paper addresses the issue of an optimal tax system and puts emphasis on two aspects: justice and efficiency. The issue of taxation has been the subject of numerous debates at the European level for several years. A good tax system should contribute to the state treasury with sufficient revenues, should not be an administrative burden, and must be sufficiently efficient and transparent. Purpose of the article: The submitted article provides an extensive analysis of the opinions of respondents on the effectiveness of the financial administration of the Slovak Republic. The aim is to analyse the views and attitudes of the respondents on the key factors affecting the effectiveness of financial administration in terms of respondents' age, gender, occupation and place of residence using mathematical-statistical methods. Methods: In the course of extensive empirical quantitative research (N = 1.500) were used Factor Model Analysis (Factor Analysis) and Analysis of Variance (Anova) were used. The data was obtained through a questionnaire survey, which-was carried out in four districts of Slovakia and focused on a wide range of respondents divided into four age-related categories. Findings & Value added: In terms of research carried out, it is possible to conclude that there is dissatisfaction with the overall tax and customs system in the Slovak Republic. An analysis of respondents' views on the effectiveness of the tax system has shown that it is possible to identify several key factors that affect it, and they are: collection of levies and availability, competence of tax administration staff, computerisation of tax administration, tax collection efficiency, labour costs, and administrative difficulty of tax administration. in the paper, we also discuss these in more detail. The research results offer relevant and interesting implications for public authorities, policy makers and reformers as well as motives for further investigation of the tax administration issue.
