Purpose – This paper aims to establish the level (if any) of Chinese State influence on setting the terms of Foreign Direct Investment in Zambia, specifically their influence on improving access for Chinese investors through the establishment of Special Economic Zones. Design/methodology/approach – The paper presents a process trace to test primary archival data and elite interviews against growing academic and popular “China in Africa” literature. Findings – After examining primary data, existing academic and popular literature is found to poorly describe China’s economic influence in Zambia, primarily by largely speculating on non-evident coercive investment practices. Instead, the paper concludes that similarities between new Chinese investment and retreating Western sources in Africa can better be described as “Sino-Substitution”. Research limitations/implications – The primary research has focused on English language Zambian sources; access to further Chinese sources would improve the breadth of the study. Practical implications – The study has found the terms of new Chinese investment in Zambia to be far more calculated, consensual and symbiotic than described in the existing literature. This more balanced view of Chinese investment is important if other foreign investors are to retain or regain competitive advantage in the region. Originality/value – No existing research has traced empirically the process through which the Zambian Government developed Special Economic Zones into the country’s largest investment vehicle, or how Chinese investment came to dominant capital flows within them. As investment in these zones grows, a better understanding of the Zambia–China relationship should help other investors compete, and improve Zambia’s access to capital.

Abstract:Based on primary sources, including documents obtained from Cameroon’s Ministry of External Relations, oral interviews conducted in Cameroon, and local newspapers, and a variety of secondary sources, this article examines Cameroon’s foreign policy and economic relations with China. It argues that Cameroon’s engagement with China has resulted in short-term benefits for consumers but undermined long-term, sustainable economic development. The article concludes that unless China genuinely pursues its promised policies of “mutual respect” and “win–win gain,” voices of protest will only grow louder in Cameroon and other African nations.

As economic globalization is deepening, a new international division of labor emerges, which is, to a large extent, realized in the form of FDI. Sino-US trade is in the state of fast development, and foreign direct investment in China also goes through large-scale expansion in the meantime. With its huge market potential, broad development prospects and increasingly improved investment environment, China has attracted an increasing number of foreign investors to invest in China, thus China is gradually becoming a great power utilizing foreign investment. Foreign-funded enterprises in China play a significant role in the import and export trade between China and the United States and the development of Sino-US trade. The rapid growth of China-US trade is largely benefited by the rapid development of foreignfunded enterprises in China. In the long run, foreign direct investment in China has a great impact on Sino-US import and export trade. In this paper, the correlation between the volumes of foreign investments in China during the period between 1983-2019 and the Sino-US import and export trade is analyzed, and based on the co-integration relationship between foreign direct investment in China and the Sino-US import and export trade, it comes to a conclusion that foreign direct investment in China plays a catalytic role in both import and export trade between China and the United States, that is, foreign direct investment has a stimulating effect on Sino-US import and export trade, resulting in China’s ever-expanding trade surplus with the United States.

International development is a challenge that each university must face. The educational mechanism of private undergraduate universities is flexible, and has certain advantages in expanding international education programs. Sino-foreign credit mutual recognition programs are more common in private undergraduate universities. With the continuous development of resources and models on international education cooperation, the forms of Sino-foreign credits mutual recognition cooperation are becoming more diversified. The rapid development of Chinese and foreign credit recognition education programs in private undergraduate universities requires scientific and advanced management concepts and support. Young private universities have short international development time and lack of experience. Therefore, relevant issues should be more researched. This paper analyzes the problems and challenges in the education mode and management of Sino-foreign credit mutual recognition projects in private undergraduate universities, and puts forward relevant countermeasures. Purpose – Despite recent threats of economic contraction, China still offers attractive opportunities for foreign companies seeking to expand their business activities through joint venturing (JV) partnering entry strategies. Recent research has indicated a growing recognition of the importance of relational factors in JV partnering. The purpose of this paper is to build on recent research findings that identify critical relation success factors in JVs and explores these in the context of a Hong Kong-based civil aviation services company seeking to expand business activities in Greater China. Design/methodology/approach – While the extant management literature focuses primarily on factors relevant to the inter-partner relationship between partners in the formation stage of a joint venture, this research takes a dynamic stakeholder perspective in respect of the relevant relational factors over the evolution of a partnership. The research described in this paper is based on a case-based study that identifies and examines the relevance and importance of uniquely Chinese factors such as guanxi, renqing and mianzi in the specific context of a strategic partnering relationship. Findings – This phenomenological study provides empirical evidence of critical linkages of these to intrinsically Chinese notions of guanxi, mianzi and renqing – it links these to key strategic partnering success factors identified to be trust, conflict resolution, commitment and cooperation. This study thereby reinforces the importance of the uniquely Chinese relational context in cross-border JVs. Moreover, the research findings suggest that these factors underpin the dynamic bi-directional stakeholder relationship in a Sino-foreign strategic partnership. Originality/value – This study conceptually links the uniquely Chinese relational factors (guanxi, mianzi and renqing) to key success factors supporting the establishment of a strategic partnership in a Sino-foreign context; moreover, it contributes empirical evidence substantiating the proposed conceptual linkage.

The globalization of today’s world economy is developing in depth, and international education has gradually taken a new step in order to cultivate higher education talents who can adapt to the new context of development. Sino-foreign cooperative education is the main means for the country to carry out international education and foreign exchange, and it aims to cultivate complex talents who can adapt to the new international trade and exchange in the world. Due to the special nature of the student source and the complexity of the purpose of the school, the teaching concept and mode of Sino-foreign cooperative schools differ greatly from the traditional general higher education, which also puts forward strict requirements on the professional level of counselors. As an emerging technology, big data mining technology has a unique advantage in optimizing the processing and management of a large amount of data. The application of big data mining technology to the management of counselors in Sino-foreign cooperative education is important for improving the quality of education, establishing an efficient educational model of Sino-foreign cooperative education, and promoting the international modernization of national education.

When China and India get closer, will Nepal be uncomfortable with losing its strategicspace? The available literature on Sino-Indian conflict and competition in the Himalayanregion do not divulge the impacts of Sino-Indian cooperation on Nepal. By examining theSino-Indian rapprochement over Nepal’s Lipulekh, this study elaborates the implications ofIndia’s and China’s neighborhood policies on Nepal’s foreign policy. In 2015, while Nepalwas concentrating on post-earthquake relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction, China andIndia—the two Asian geopolitical rivals, decided to use Nepal’s Lipulekh as a trading corridor, without Nepal’s consent. The Sino-Indian agreement over Nepal’s Lipulekh not only stirredcontroversy in Nepal but also raised questions over the intention of Nepal’s two immediateneighbors. Although 2015 was not the first time that Nepal’s neighbors agreed upon the Lipulekhroute, the case of the Sino-Indian rapprochement in Lipulekh is studied and methodologicallyanalyzed under the framework of exploratory research design. By situating Nepal’s case in theconceptual framework of small states, first, this study surveys Nepal’s foreign policy behaviorin the context of Nepal’s Gulliverian neighborhood through deductive reasoning. Second, theimpacts of the multi-faceted Sino-Indian interactions on Nepal’s foreign policy are identifiedthrough inductive reasoning. Finally, the implications of the neighborhood policies of Chinaand India toward Nepal are discussed against the backdrop of the Sino-Indian rapprochementover Nepal’s Lipulekh.

Abstract This article presents an analysis of how China will participate in the ‘shale revolution’ through Sino-foreign collaboration by evaluating the legal arrangements on offer today in the onshore shale gas industry—specifically focusing on the essence of the different agreements, the obstacles for foreign investors under the current petroleum regime, why obstacles exist and what the relevant solutions to them might be. The first part of the article provides a general introduction to the use of JV contracting models and PSCs in the development of Chinese shale projects with foreign investment, and analyses the crucial factors which apply to determining the boundaries between the different forms of contract and the concerns of the relevant parties in the process of negotiation. The second part of the article investigates the reasons for the absence of IOCs in the second shale gas bid round, and why Shell terminated its PSC with CNPC even though commerciality had been declared. Finally, taking into account the underlying reasons for why China's legal regime hinders foreigner investors' enthusiasm for shale gas investment, it proposes relevant suggestions to enhance the attractiveness of Sino-foreign shale gas cooperation.

Sino-foreign cooperative education plays an important role in undergraduate education. It has also proved itself popular in higher vocational education in recent years, in which foreign teachers are undertaking the task of teaching some specialized courses. The teaching by foreign teachers has certain irreplaceable advantages, but nonnegligible disadvantages as well. Questionnaires have been distributed to the students majoring in Landscape Engineering from Shanghai Urban Construction College to investigate the teaching of specialized courses by foreign teachers. Based on the statistics, the advantages and disadvantages of their teaching have been analyzed, and several suggestions on how to adopt the good points and avoid the shortcomings are offered, so as to improve the quality of Sino-foreign cooperative education in higher vocational college.

AbstractAt the turn of the twentieth century, foreign bankers viewed China as one of the up-and-coming markets for international banking. This led to a rapid influx of foreign banks into the banking sector of the China coast. Consequently, foreign banks became a major presence in the treaty ports, where they financed China's foreign trade, provided loans to the Chinese government, and supplied Chinese banks with credit. However, their operations in the Chinese banking sector were always dependent on interaction with Chinese banks. Previous scholarship has largely portrayed the relationship between foreign and Chinese banks in terms of the former dominating and controlling the banking sector of China's treaty ports. This article challenges this view and shows that the relationship between foreign and Chinese banks was one of interdependence rather than one-sided control. It demonstrates how foreign banks had to adapt their business practices to the Chinese business environment and how they were integrated into existing Chinese business networks. Moreover, this article reveals how Chinese entrepreneurs could use their relationship with foreign banks for the benefit of their own business networks and exploit information asymmetries between foreign and Chinese banks to generate profits. The result of the development of this interdependent relationship between foreign and Chinese banks, and of the integration of the former into existing Chinese business networks was the formation of Sino-foreign business networks, which played an important role in making possible the operations of financial markets in China's transnational treaty port economy.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate how a Chinese firm’s strategic orientation impact its knowledge acquisition from its foreign alliance partners through governance mechanisms used in the Sino-foreign alliance partnership. Design/methodology/approach This research first proposes an integrated model which links a firm’s strategic orientations (entrepreneurial and market orientations), governance mechanism (contract and trust controls), and its knowledge acquisition together. Then, this research collected data from 198 Chinese firms involved in Sino-foreign alliances to test the conceptual model. Findings For entrepreneurial-oriented alliance firms, a moderate level of contract and a high level of trust are the most efficient uses of control mechanisms for Chinese firms’ knowledge acquisition. In comparison, for market-oriented alliance firms, both contract and trust control mechanisms should be used at the moderate level to achieve maximum knowledge acquisition from their foreign partners. Originality/value By introducing a new antecedent for the choice of control mechanisms in the context of Sino-foreign alliance relationships, this study empirically finds a non-linear relationship between contract control and knowledge acquisition and confirms the significant role of trust in facilitating knowledge acquisition between alliance partners from the perspective of alliance firms in emerging markets.

Over the years, China has taken a decisive lead in partnering with Africa, especially in the construction industry. This study explores the scope of Sino-Africa relations in the Nigerian construction industry. In line with a descriptive nature, data was obtained from building professionals within Nigeria by means of a survey and analysed quantitatively using multivariate analysis. The study found that China’s involvement in the Nigerian construction industry executes project in four main categories viz land transportation; public facilities; water transportation; and building construction. It was established that China is an essential player in the Nigerian construction industry especially in infrastructure development. Hence there is a need to redefine the Sino-African partnership to focus on local capacity development while delivering optimum infrastructural development in African countries.
