One phenomenon dominates the history of motion pictures: at one time or another, a single country has emerged as the most creative and vital source of film making on the international scene. It is almost as if a spotlight moved across the stages of the world, pausing now here, now there, to illuminate the work of an entire group of artists. This was perhaps understandable in the Soviet Union during the mid-Nineteen-Twenties, when a new government actively encouraged experimentation in all the arts, and particularly the art of the motion picture.

To tackle obesity, upgrading the image of healthy food is increasingly relevant. Rather than focusing on long-term benefits, an effective way to promote healthy food consumption through visual advertising is to increase its pleasure perception. We investigate whether implied motion, a popular trend in food pictures, affects food perceptions through anticipated consumption pleasure. Prior research shows that motion affects food perceptions, but these studies focused on limited food categories, using experiments with a single food stimulus, and mainly showing unhealthy food effects. Therefore, we aim to (1) replicate prior findings on the effects of food in motion on appeal, tastiness, healthiness, and freshness perceptions; (2) examine whether these effects differ for healthy and unhealthy food; and (3) investigate whether anticipated pleasure of consumption drives the effects of implied motion on food perceptions. Three between-subjects experiments (N = 626) reveal no evidence for the effectiveness of motion (vs. no motion) across a large variety of food products. We further show no differential effects for healthy versus unhealthy foods. Moreover, implied motion does not increase appeal or taste perceptions through anticipated pleasure. Considering the current replication crisis, these findings provide more nuanced insights into the effectiveness of motion in visual food advertising.

The surface electromyography (sEMG) signal is widely used as a control source of the upper limb exoskeleton rehabilitation robot. However, the traditional way of controlling the exoskeleton robot by the sEMG signal requires one to specially extract and calculate for complex sEMG features. Moreover, due to the huge amount of calculation and individualized difference, the real-time control of the exoskeleton robot cannot be realized. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel method using an improved detection algorithm to recognize limb joint motion and detect joint angle based on sEMG images, aiming to obtain a high-security and fast-processing action recognition strategy. In this paper, MobileNetV2 combined the Ghost module as the feature extraction network to obtain the pretraining model. Then, the target detection network Yolo-V4 was used to estimate the six movement categories of the upper limb joints and to predict the joint movement angles. The experimental results showed that the proposed motion recognition methods were available. Every 100 pictures can be accurately identified in approximately 78 pictures, and the processing speed of every single picture on the PC side was 17.97 ms. For the train data, the mAP@0.5 could reach 82.3%, and mAP@0.5–0.95 could reach 0.42; for the verification data, the average recognition accuracy could reach 80.7%.

The article considers some aspects of a creative process over the film. On the example of motion pictures of the representatives of the Ukrainian “poetic cinema”, as well as of the creative work of their producers the attempt is made to single out peculiarities of psychology of creative work, its phases and stages. It is proved that such movies as “Tini zabutykh predkiv”, “Propala hramota”, “Vechir na Ivana Kupala”, “Kaminnyi khrest”, “Vavylon XX” and their creators substantially renewed the aesthetics of the cinematographic art of Ukraine.

Recently, the use of different social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp have increased significantly. A vast number of static images and motion frame pictures posted on such platforms get stored in the device folder making it critical to identify the social network of the downloaded images in the android domain. This is a multimedia forensic job with major cyber security consequences and is said to be accomplished using unique traces contained in picture material (SNs). Therefore, this proposal has been endeavoured to construct a new framework called FusionNet to combine two well-established single shared Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to accelerate the search. Moreover, the FusionNet has been found to improve classification accuracy. Image searching is one of the challenging issues in the android domain besides being a time-consuming process. The goal of the proposed network's architecture and training is to enhance the forensic information included in the digital pictures shared on social media. Furthermore, several network designs for the categorization of WhatsApp pictures have been compared and this suggested method has shown better performance in the comparison. The proposed framework's overall performance was measured using the performance metrics.

Context: Vision-based measurement (VBM) systems are becoming popular as an affordable and suitable alternative for scientific and engineering applications. When cameras are used as instruments, motion blur usually emerges as a recurrent and undesirable image degradation, which in fact contains kinematic information that is usually dismissed. Method: This paper introduces an alternative approach to measure relative acceleration from a real invariant uniformly accelerated linear motion-blurred image. This is done by using homomorphic mapping to extract the characteristic Point Spread Function (PSF) of the blurred image, as well as machine learning regression. A total of 125 uniformly accelerated motion-blurred pictures were taken in a light- and distance-controlled environment, at five different accelerations ranging between 0,64 and 2,4 m/s2. This study evaluated 19 variants such as tree ensembles, Gaussian processes (GPR), and linear, support vector machine (SVM), and tree regression. Results: The best RMSE result corresponds to GPR (Matern 5/2), with 0,2547 m/s2 and a prediction speed of 530 observations per second (obs/s). Additionally, some novel deep learning methods were used to obtain the best RMSE value (0,4639 m/s2 for Inception ResNet v2, with a prediction speed of 11 obs/s. Conclusions: The proposed method (homomorphic mapping and machine learning) is a valid alternative for calculating acceleration from invariant motion blur in real-time applications when additive noise is not dominant, even surpassing the deep learning techniques evaluated.

A single chip encoder-decoder dedicated to low bit rate visual communication is proposed, with the main theme focused on the object extraction and vector quantization. New schemes are introduced into an edge detector so as to extract objects by means of the block-level edge detection in conjunction with the pel-level edge detection and into a PE (Processing Element) array so as to be shared by the vector quantizer and the motion estimator. Owing to sophisticated architectures, these CODEC facilities have been implemented in 72.24 mm2 by a 0.6 μm triple-metal CMOS technology, which can enable the visual communication of QCIF (176 × 144) 10 fps pictures at a bit rate of 32 Kbps or less. The designed encoder-decoder operates at 10 MHz, and dissipates 147 mW from a single 3.3 V supply.

Generic noun phrases (e.g. Tigers are fierce) are of interest for their semantic properties: they capture ‘essential’ properties, are timeless, and are context-free. The present study examines use of generic noun phrases by preschool children and their mothers. Mother–child pairs were videotaped while looking through a book of animal pictures. Each page depicted either a single instance of a particular category (e.g. one crab) or multiple instances of a particular category (e.g. many crabs). The results indicated a striking difference in how generics vs. non-generics were distributed, both in the speech of mothers and in the speech of preschool children. Whereas the form of non-generic noun phrases was closely linked to the structure of the page (i.e. singular noun phrases were used more often when a single instance was presented; plural noun phrases were used more often when multiple instances were presented), the form of generic noun phrases was independent of the information depicted (e.g. plural noun phrases were as frequent when only one instance was presented as when multiple instances were presented). We interpret the data as providing evidence that generic noun phrases differ in their semantics and conceptual organization from non-generic noun phrases, both in the input to young children and in children's own speech. Thus, this simple linguistic device may provide input to, and a reflection of, children's early developing notion of ‘kinds’.

The ideal root canal preparation is where the original canal morphology is maintained during the biomechanical preparation. Preparation of curved canals has always been a challenge to clinicians. Better results have been suggested for a single NiTi instrument with reciprocating motion than the conventional continuous rotation method in the preparation of curved root canals. Although the Neoniti rotary system is not suggested to be used with reciprocal motion, running a pilot study, we found that it could be possible. The present study aimed to investigate if shaping curved canals using the Neoniti rotary system with reciprocal motion leads to better results in terms of root canal transportation. One hundred acrylic j-shape canal simulator endoblocks were used in this study. Five preparation sequences were applied: GPS followed by A1#20 (GPS + A1#20), GPS followed by A1#20 and then A1#25 (GPS + A1#20 + A1#25), GPS followed by A1#25 (GPS + A1#25), hand file followed by A1#20 (hand file + A1#20), and GPS followed by A1#20 (with reciprocal motion) (GPS + A1#20(reciprocal)). Pictures were taken from blocks once before and once after preparation from two dimensions. Before-and-after pictures were superimposed in Photoshop software. Measurements were performed in Digimizer. The number of autoreverses and pecking motions was recorded after reviewing the recorded videos. Data were analyzed in SPSS, version 26. A p value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The group GPS + A1#20 + A1#25 had more transportation compared with the others, at apical, middle, and coronal thirds not only in the frontal view but also in the lateral view. Other groups were not significantly different. The number of peckings and autoreverses was significantly less when A1#25 was used after GPS and A1#20. When A1#20 was used with reciprocal motion, it had less peckings compared with the same file with continuous rotation, and no autoreverses were observed in that group. Using Neoniti files with reciprocal motion might result in less instrument fatigue and favorable results, with respect to canal anatomy preservation. Using A1#20 before A1#25 also will decrease the stress on the instrument during preparation. However, this may lead to significantly more canal transportation.

Beginning with mother/daughter film classics such as Stella Dallas (1937) and Mildred Pierce (1945), and moving to consider recent mother/daughter texts, Anywhere But Here (1999) and "Gilmore Girls" (2000 -), this thesis, in both its written and visual components, examines the multiple and often contradictory ways in which mothers and daughters have been represented in popular culture. Challenging the discourses that singularly stress struggle and separation, this research highlights representations that emphasize mother/daughter connection, and examines how such identification empowers mothers and daughters. This project is guided by cultural studies and feminist film theories. The first two chapters outline past and present paradigms of mothers and daughters respectively; the third chapter examines the goals and findings of the visual component.

This chapter uses the ubiquitous “baby mama” to discuss what Lindon Barrett calls “bla(n)ckness”—a concept that radically calls into question traditional discourses by exposing the violence that often sets those discourses into motion and by revealing alternative discourses that resist the dichotomization upon which dominance, and dominate discourses, often rely. It argues that not only have social scientists found the link between poverty and unwed pregnancy that has long structured national debates about single black mothers to have been fatefully misinterpreted, but that young black mothers themselves evince the faulty logic upon which these debates so heavily rely.

Champ Clark and Nye called Hollywood one of “the most deadly and insidious of all propaganda agencies.” Champ Clark provided his vision of what free speech meant in the United States. This right should not be granted to any group who holds a monopoly on a means of communication such as motion pictures. Free speech, Champ Clark contended, only applied to someone speaking to their neighbor, publishing an article, or standing on a soap box in a field. This definition clearly does not include any form of mass communication except the newspaper, which the Committee made sure not to single out. Senator Champ Clark complained that Hollywood films do not deserve the reach they get. It was clear that Champ Clark was jealous that more people followed movies than Washington politicians. Complaints followed that there were not enough politicians featured in films and newsreels. The senator also made a case that Hollywood was a monopoly, diverting from the true goal of the investigation into motion picture propaganda.

Abstract Music has been central to the history of film. This chapter charts that history through a global perspective, looking at the origins and development of musical accompaniment to motion pictures from the United States to South America, from Europe, Russia, and the Soviet Union to India, Japan, China, and numerous other countries in between. That history includes attention to the variety of forms that musical accompaniment to early film took from phonographic accompaniment to live performance, from improvisation to cue sheets to original film scores, and from a single musician to a symphony orchestra. This chapter incorporates new research since the first edition of this book in 2010 on film music in Ireland, Austria, Turkey, the Dutch East Indies, and the Netherlands; the role of women in the early film music industry; and the role of film music in the continued resurgence of silent film screenings.

Abstract As The Homeless Became An Established feature of American society in the early twentieth century, the image of this outcast group underwent a dramatic transformation. In middle-class literature and periodicals the view of the tramp as a dangerous, criminal agitator all but disappeared. No single stereotype replaced it; rather there emerged a number of overlapping—and frequently competing— images. Aspects of the traditional view that were not discarded were sometimes transformed in a way that would have astounded the moralists of the 1870s. What was once regarded as a defect in the moral sensibilities of the vagabond—such as his irresponsible desire to avoid work—sometimes became little more than a quaint idiosyncracy, if not actually a trait to be admired. The figure of the tramp also was significant in vaudeville, popular music, and early motion pictures. Reflecting the concerns and sentiments of a working- class or mixed-class audience, these popular entertainment forms often employed the symbol of the homeless man to criticize the in- equities of the new industrial order.

An attempt to objectively and comprehensively record the modern living reality of asylum seekers based on their own perspective and the views expressed by the academic and administrative staff employed at accommodation structures has been made. Emphasis is placed on women, and the common problems they encounter regardless of gender, but also on individual differences identified between female and male asylum seekers. Therefore, the present paper focuses on the living conditions in temporary accommodation centres and on the existing social relationship structures being shaped at such centres, with special emphasis on the dimension of gender (single women, single mothers). The aim of this paper was, then, to collect documented material and evidence on current practices concerning specific vulnerable groups, on the grounds that such groups still remain in obscurity to some extent and their survival is hugely dependent on individual initiatives and occasional assistance received. Our motive was the lack of comparative data, drawing attention to specific vulnerable groups in temporary accommodation centres and hostels in Athens and Lavrion and to their living conditions. Consequently, the realization of this research, for the implementation of which a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods has been employed, is considered to be a minimum prerequisite for the creation of a humanitarian policy addressing refugees in Greece, as a Member State of the EU. The findings highlight the concerns about the service quality including: (1) the lack or variations in the frequency of funding, (2) the absence of women’s participation in decision-making as their responsibilities residing in these centres usually fulfill their “stereotypical” roles: child care, cooking and cleaning, (3) the difficulties in recording/identifying specific incidents are mainly due to a lack of knowledge and a lack of staff, which is typical of the centres surveyed by Doctors Without Borders in Europe, but also due to the fear overwhelming violent victims, preventing the disclosure of facts and contributing to the maintenance of this bleak picture of the victims. (4) the need for psychological support due to problems that can become more severe after long periods of waiting at centres due to the uncertain outcome of asylum procedures hindering their adjustment. (5) the lack of childcare provisions inhibits employment for women. In addition as the vast majority of female refugees are poorly educated and cannot easily find a (legitimate) job—until after a long stay—they basically get employed at the informal home-based work sector and/or at other marginalized sectors of the labour market. The present research may contribute to the: (a) provision of a clear-cut picture of the gender dimension within the refugee context, (b) identification of the female refugee population’s needs and the detection of the problems they encounter, (c) the evaluation of the effectiveness of services and structures supporting refugees and (d) exploitation of results and findings for policy design.

Abstract Animation display of the NC milling process is helpful for detecting potential problems of a cutter path prior to actual machining. In the milling animation, machined shape of the workpiece is repeatedly computed and displayed after every short motion of the cutter. A single cutter motion usually removes very small portion of the workpiece, therefore most part of two successive pictures in the animation becomes the same. Based on this characteristic of the pictures, the authors develop “partial redrawing technique” for fast and smooth animation of the NC milling process. This method efficiently generates a new picture of the workpiece by properly modifying a limited part of the latest picture in the screen. The picture area to modify is determined based on the removed shape of the workpiece. An experimental system is implemented and some animations of complex milling processes are demonstrated.

Heat transfer enhancement by the motion of the bubbles sliding along the heating surface are wildly reported by many researchers, thus it is of great importance to quantitatively investigate the characteristics of sliding bubbles. A visualization study of subcooled flow boiling of water in a vertical single face-heated narrow rectangular channel under a series of natural circulation working conditions was conducted. Pictures of the bubble sliding behaviors were captured by a high speed camera simultaneously with thermal data. A sequence of digital image processing algorithms were applied to the original picture to extract bubble shape and location information, which post-processing methods were adopted to obtain characteristic sliding parameters (including the distribution of the equivalent sliding bubble diameter and velocity, number density of the sliding bubbles). It is found that bubbles can be able to nucleate and grow while sliding on the heating plate after the ONB point; the bubble number density, average bubble sliding velocity and the average sliding diameter continue to increase along the test section; heat transfer in the flow channel are significantly enhanced along flow direction with relatively low local void fraction. The average bubble sliding velocity near the inlet is significantly smaller than the sectional average velocity of single-phase fluid of the flow channel, and then it exceeded near the outlet of the test section. The average bubble sliding velocity and diameter increase with increasing heat flux and decreeing local subcooling degree. The equivalent diameter of sliding bubbles and the bubble sliding velocity approximately follow normal distribution. The distribution of the bubble diameter and velocity both cover a wild range.
