This article analyses little-known short stories of modern Ukrainian writers Valerian Pidmohylny and Mykhailo Yatskiv in the context of the 20th century existentialism. It can be considered as a cultural phenomenon which combines philosophy with literature. Pidmohylny’s short stories were significantly influenced primarily by the ideas of the European philosophers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Therefore, we can search for similar motives in the works of Pidmohylny and the existentialists, which developed under the influence of the ideas of Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche. Also, the authors consider Yatskiv’s short stories through the prism of the core concepts of existentialism, namely, fate and death. Pidmohylny and Yatskiv can be assigned to existential writers on the basis of retrospective analysis of the themes of their short stories and the thematic areas of 20th century existentialism.

Our traditions and beliefs give rise to many myths. Many a times the Indian authors used their knowledge about myths and traditions and made stories based on them. Mulk Raj Anand is also highly traditional author who was impressed by the stories told to him as a child by his grandmother and he uses the mythical tales in his short stories. By reading these short stories, any reader is also acquainted with the traditional myths of our country. This article is an endeavor to bring to notice various myths used by Anand in his various short stories and the effect of these myths on the readers. Anand also tries to show the effect of the traditional beliefs and customs on the Indian women and proclaims the fact that women had to suffer at many places on the name of customs and traditions. In the veil of the beliefs and traditions of the family or castes, women were subjected to many forms of injustices and they too accepted all the torture on the name of custom. Dowry, Sati and harassment to widows are some of the common features he uses in his stories to depict the predicament of Indian women in the 20th century. He has also drawn attention of the readers towards the abusive language used for the women at that time. These stories help us analyze the status of women of India in the 20th century.

In the story collection, Welty portrays life and people in Mississippi in the first half of the 20th century, including quite a few marginalized people. Being a photographer as well, Welty has a unique vision for body expression. This essay tries to make an analysis of the body narration of two types of marginalized people in A Curtain of Green and Other Stories, including physically disabled people and black people. By analyzing the body culture in Welty’s works, this essay tries to give a vivid picture of Southern marginalized people’s daily existence, probe into the social circumstances of Southern America in early 20th century, and find a new perspective to interpret Southern American culture.

German Shortest Story: A Narratological Analysis of Chosen „Short Short Stories” by Kerstin Hensel and Heiner Feldhoff Kürzestgeschichte (lit. shortest story), which is the German term for a subcategory of short story, became established as a literary genre in the 20th century. Its condensed content conformed to the hectic pace of life but, in terms of the issues discussed, it was more essential and dedicated to an experienced reader. In this paper, a narratological analysis of selected shortest stories by Heiner Feldhoff and Kerstin Hensel will be conducted. A methodological basis for the analysis is the categories implemented by Gérard Genette. Its aim is to provide an answer to the question whether shortest stories could be, like any other epic texts, subject to a narratological analysis and to what extent the length of a text might influence the findings of such an analysis.

A number of distinguished Thai short stories from 1964 to 1973 reveal new and distinctive features in terms of subject, form, concepts and style. These features are similar to those of modernism, which was an international movement in literature and the arts that began in the late 19th century and continued into the early 20th century. The similarity suggests the direct and indirect influences of the modernist style upon Thai writers. Furthermore, the change in style of some of the short stories indicates a relationship with the art movements: impressionism, expressionism, cubism and surrealism, which were subsidiary art movements within modernism. These specific features of the Thai short story signify a radical break with the traditional writing of the time.

The article deals with the images of eccentric characters in the short stories “Jerry and Molly and Sam” (1972), “Fat” (1971), “They Are Not Your Husband” (1973), “Neighbors” (1971), “The Idea” (1972) written by an outstanding American writer of the second half of the 20th century R. Carver. The definitions of the concepts of “eccentricity” and “grotesque” are given, the fundamental difference between “eccentric” and the related concepts of “jester” and “rogue” is highlighted, examples of the interpretation of “eccentricity” in the previous literary tradition are given. The selected stories are analyzed and the main features inherent in Carver’s eccentrics, such as passivity, self-deception, substitution of values, following false ideas about future happiness, and others, are highlighted. In his stories, the author again actualizes the problems of loneliness, control, alienation and mutual misunderstanding, traditional for American literature of the 20th century; touches upon the themes of voyeurism, appearance and personality, midlife crisis, invasion of personal space and private property, portrays characters who happen to be victims of broken communication, who make attempts to identify themselves, but invariably fail. The infantile and absurd actions of Carver’s heroes not only hide the mental discord and the tragic inability of an individual to gain control over their own life, but at the same time reflect the general social disorder and spiritual trouble. Thus, the characters in the stories of R. Carver stand on a par with other eccentric heroes of American and world literature, in particular with the grotesque heroes of one of the founders of the modern American short story, S. Anderson.

In American ethnic literature of the last three decades of the 20th century, recurrent themes of mobility, travel, and “homing in” are emblematic of the search for identity. In this essay, which discusses three short stories, Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use,” Louise Erdrich’s “The World’s Greatest Fishermen,” and Daniel Chacon’s “The Biggest City in the World,” I attempt to demonstrate that as a consequence of technological development, with travel becoming increasingly accessible to ethnic Americans, their search for identity assumes wider range, transcending national and cultural boundaries.

The study of short stories in Jordan in the early 60-80s of the 20th century shows that the problem of Palestine is one of the leading topics, received a deeper and more comprehensive coverage in their works. A characteristic side of the short story writers of Jordan 70-80s is that they take a biased anti-Israeli position. During this period, the writers create the short story which possesses a new form and content. It should be noted that the anti-Israeli position is characteristic of the short stories of Ilias Farquh, where the writer’s short story “Abo, illuminating the silence”, discusses the theme of the Palestinians who have become refugees in their homeland.

The short stories borrow from The Merchant of Venice especially the theme of antisemitism and Shylock as the main Jewish character but are usually set in the 20th or 21st century rather than in the Renaissance. Some stories react to notable productions of the play across the globe, e.g. in Stockholm in 1944, London in 2012 or in Venice in 2016, the year of the quincentennial commemorations of the foundation of the Venetian ghetto. The stories also include tragicomic elements as typical features of Jewish literature.

In the early 20th century, especially from the 1920s onwards, Vietnamese literature gradually entered the trajectory of modern literature quickly and comprehensively with the appearance of many talented writers with remarkable artistic innovations. This is clearly shown in the short story, the “short narrative” genre, which is dynamic and can easily catch up with the changes of society in general and of literature in particular. The process of modernization of short stories in this period was revealed in many aspects, especially in terms of plot, and artistic language, which will be elucidated in this article.

The article provides a comparative analysis of the implication features used in the dialogues of the stories by Ernest Hemingway and Raymond Carver, his follower of the second half of the 20th century. Our analysis is based on their texts written in different years. Employing specific examples, we analyzed the authors’ work on the use of the main subtext elements: A pause or silence, incompleteness and repetitions. The highlighted elements of the implication allow us to make conclusions about the direct influence of Hemingway on the poetics of Raymond Carver’s stories. The comparison of the presented techniques illustrates the authors’ strategies used for the emotional involvement of the reader in the process of deciphering the text, as well as the desire to compress the text without losing its semantic depth. The relevance of the article is determined by the growing interest in the realistic short story, in particular, in the creative legacy of Raymond Carver. The articles and works, devoted to his prose and poetic works, continue to appear in foreign and Russian literary criticism. The analysis of the subtext peculiarities in dialogues allows us to contribute to the study of dialogue strategies, which in the 20th-century literature perform the plot-moving function and disclose psychological characteristics of the character. In addition, the comparative analysis of the writers’ stories helps understand the features of Raymond Carver’s creative method. The methodological basis of the article is the cultural-historical and comparative methods.

rnest Hemingway is regarded as one of the greatest American writers in the 20th century. This paper aims to interpret Hemingway’s ecofeminism by analyzing his short stories Cat in the Rain and Hills Like White Elephants. In these two short stories, Hemingway’s ecofeminism is reflected mainly in three aspects: the relationship between man and nature, the relationship between man and woman, and the resonance between woman and nature. It is clear that Hemingway’s Ecofeminism is interwoven closely with the social and economic condition of America, the awakening of female consciousness, Hemingway’s family education as well as his own experiences. The interpretation of Hemingway’s ecofeminism inspires us today to deconstruct the patriarchal worldview.

The article presents a linguopoetic analysis of ethnographic short stories which compiled the cycle “Gamblers” (1926) by the Russian writer of the Harbin emigration P.V. Shkurkin. The Far Eastern Russian-Chinese pidgin is one of the brightest and richest pidgin branches of the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, widespread in the cultural and commercial exchanges. As a sinologist, Shkurkin actively used pidginized vocabulary instead of Russian equivalent words and phrases in “Gamblers”. The subject of this study is the Far Eastern Russian-Chinese pidgin in “Gamblers” as the characteristic of the ethnoculture of the Chinese-Russian border zone. The work also researches the vocabulary that reflected the impressions of Chinese about Russians. Shkurkin’s narrative style is characterized by the combination of pidgin and Chinese phraseological units. In addition, the author of “Gamblers” resorted to vocabulary of European languages which is specific to the Chinese population of the 1910–1920s. It is shown that in the Shkurkin’s short stories the language image is created. It is proved that pidgin is relevant to ethnographic prose, the image of the speech culture of the Chinese and Russian emigrants. The motivated use of pidgin by Shkurkin in the combination with other narrative lexical tricks contributed to the creation of a real appearance of China in the first decades of the 20th century.

In various epochs, science fiction writers shared an interest in problems related to the humanization of an artificial body and the process of human interaction with a man’s own creation. In the 20th century Italian literature, in particular, this theme emerged already at the dawn of the century (e.g. а futuristic novel by F.T. Marinetti) and was present up until the beginning of the current “age of artificial intelligence.” Fantastic plots of several short stories and novellas by D. Buzzati and T. Landolfi, written in the 1950s and 60s, depicted ambivalent perception of the technogenic civilization and its novelties by the modern cultural consciousness. On the one hand, these works reflected the turning of the machine into an indispensable attribute of the social status of the modern human, the guarant of her private life success and mental health. On the other hand, in science fiction, there is a clear tendency to dramatize the problems and difficulties that the technological age set for a human — in particular, the problem of preserving the privilege of the human consciousness over the increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence of the machine.

The purpose of this study is to elucidate the tragic elements in the short stories “Wangasujeoksa,” “Gyo,” and “Soseongsamwol” by Xiao Hong. All three works connect their characters to the tragedy of death. This reflects how, despite China's attempts at new progress and innovation through the Xinhai Revolution and the May Fourth Movement in the early 20th century, lower-class women remained in poverty and became victims of an irrational social structure. This study aims to examine the tragedy in Xiao Hong's short stories within the unique historical context of China's modern and contemporary era. In particular, her short stories such as “Wangasujeoksa,” “Gyo,” and “Soseongsamwol” depict characters who, amidst the backdrop of China's transition during the modern and contemporary era, all meet tragic ends, succumbing to poverty, despair, misfortune, and suffering. Therefore, it seeks to explore the tragedy in the context of Chinese modern history by examining Xiao Hong's tragic worldview, her consciousness of tragedy, and the tragic experiences of her characters. If the previous research analyzed the tragedy in Xiao Hong's mid-length novels, this study focuses on the tragedy depicted in Xiao Hong's short stories within the context of modern and contemporary China. This research aims to find ways to study Xiao Hong's short stories from various perspectives.

From the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics, the paper analyzes the conceptual metaphor WOMEN ARE ANIMALS in 20th-century Vietnamese literary works. The theoretical framework for this study includes the Conceptual Metaphor Theory of Lakoff and Johnson (1980), the Great Chain of Being model of Lakoff and Turner (1989), and the Metaphor Identification Procedure of Pragglejaz Group (2007). Through a survey of 50 short stories and novels written by famous Vietnamese authors, 6 low-level metaphors as well as the mapping mechanism from the source domain to the target domain, is discovered and explained. The findings reveal that women are mainly portrayed as wild animals, livestock, pets, or birds. Metaphorical linguistic expressions, then, convey a biased view towards the low and inferior role and position of women in the family and society. Negative ideological values in the representation of women are explored to show that women are considered to be small, weak, dependent on men, and serve as their recreation. Vietnamese people's thinking and cultural characteristics are also reflected in this metaphor.

The paper is focused on the comparison of discourses formed in the literary texts which depict motifs of war at the beginning of 20th and 21st centuries. Images associated both with First and Second World War emphasize the shock of the changing world and lend literary credence to the texts. However, this goal is achieved by different means in the early 20th and the early 21st centuries. In expressionist novels and short stories metaphors of infection are used to describe the decline and the fall of the world of the early 20th century. Compared to that, the literary texts created in the early 21st century do not use metaphors because the experience of the Holocaust presented in the texts is viewed as a non-assimilable event and therefore it should not be translated into metaphors. In addition to the suffering of the Holocaust, the image of the infection in the literary texts of the beginning of the 21st century is only an accompanying description of the events of the Second World War.

Because of politics and history, literary texts of the mature Ukrainian modernism were almost entirely unavailable in Polish translations. This paper discusses key historical, cultural and political reasons that have caused this situation. It also presents the new Polish scholarly and publishing projects aiming to familiarize Polish readers with Ukrainian modernism. In the conclusion, the author of the article mentions the current problems hindering the publication of the key Ukrainian novels and short stories of the 1920–1930s in Polish translations.

The short story School of Heroes, by the São Paulo writer Idelma Ribeiro de Faria, was one of the winners of the National Contest of Short Stories of Paraná, in 1978, being published in the book The Winners in the same year. In this short story, the literary narrative incorporates cinematographic narrative procedures (editing, cutting, scene) to the narration in order to, through the narrated story, criticize militarism – a strong feature of its historical context, both particular (the civil-military dictatorship in Brazil ) and general (the 20th century marked by wars). In this communication, we will analyze and interpret the short story, approaching the literary and cinematographic languages that constitute it as a narrative of resistance.

The topic of this paper is discussed on the basis of two stories, ‘The Bog’ (‘Boloto,’ 1903) and ‘The Black Lightning’ (‘Chernaya molnia,’ 1913), and the short story cycle ‘The Laestrygonians’ (‘Listrigony’, 1911) by an eminent Russian writer of the turn of the 20th century, Aleksandr Kuprin. The stories bring images of the four basic natural elements – earth, fire, water and air. In particular, in ‘The Laestrygonians’ Kuprin shows the power of the sea, combined with the unimaginable force of the wind. The author presents man fighting a one-sided battle with the forces of nature. There are, as well, obvious analogies between the four elements and the elemental aspect of human nature. The stories under analysis not only depict the most important elements of the natural world, but also have particular social overtones.

José María Rivas Groot: an Approach to the Pragmatic Dimension of his Short Stories in «Rocinante» and «Día de inocentes». Having a multiform intellect, José María Rivas Groot (Bogotá, 1863-Rome, 1923) stood out as a public figure and a man of letters. Acting director of the National Library, senator, minister of state, plenipotentiary minister of Colombia to the Holy See, journalist, editor and writer, vocation this latter forged in the family bosom and in which his conservative and Christian thought, defender of tradition, is manifested. His intellectual production covers a wide variety of literary genres: poetry, novel, short stories, theater and historical essays, among others. Although his short stories have remained, in a way, on the sidelines of anthologies and studies, it is a faithful testimony of his style and thought, in a time of turmoil, affected by strong social and political transformations, framed by the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. Through two of his short stories classified as unpublished, Rocinante and Día de inocentes, this article offers an approach to his short stories from a pragmatic perspective with the purpose of revealing its meaning and intentional value, in which transtextuality, symbolism and irony are resources to which he turns, as a faithful representative of the lettered city, to express his position in the face of circumstances, behaviors and attitudes typical of his space -time, which remain in force until today.

This article focuses on various literacy-related activities of the Lithuanian peasants from the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th century, as described in the short stories by the renowned female Lithuanian writer and educator Julija Žymantienė (1845–1921) writing under a pen name Žemaitė. According to the recent research on literacy, such activities can be perceived as social practices depending on specific social and cultural context. Lithuanian research works addressing the issues of peasant literacy at the turn of the 19th – 20th centuries typically deal with cases of higher, i.e. functional literacy. Short stories by Žemaitė present a unique opportunity to look at the Lithuanian peasants still on the verge of entering the world of the secular literature. These stories often describe illiterate country people encountering the written word only at the collective reading events, when a somewhat more educated person would read aloud to a group of listeners, explaining more complicated fragments of the text to them. Such scenes of collective reading are rather frequent particularly in the early stories by Žemaitė, indicating that such peasant pastime growing increasingly popular from the end of the 19th century could be regarded as one of the most important ways of spreading the secular written word in the Lithuanian countryside. However, Žemaitė also presents evidence that even this facilitated mode of literacy imitating forms of verbal communication had hard time competing with the more traditional ways of communication favored by the village people (such as conversations, singing, playing cards, etc.).In her short stories, Žemaitė records numerous other realities from the turn of the centuries elucidating the ways by which written word entered the Lithuanian villages and the reactions it encountered from the new peasant readership, as well as changes that spread of literacy inspired in the traditional village communities of the time. Short stories by Žemaitė support the assumption made by historians maintaining that smuggling and spread of the illegal Lithuanian publications was mostly pursued by smallholders and poor peasants or craftsmen. The wealthy farmers as a rule regarded this innovation rather skeptically. The short stories present two opposing attitudes towards spreading of the illegal publications in the countryside and towards reading in general. One of such attitudes could be labelled as traditional, another one as modern. Supporters of the traditional view are scarcely individualized in the short stories; their voices being heard only in the group conversations. They are rather opposed to the publishers and promoters of the Lithuanian secular publications, as well as to the publications themselves. Characters supporting more modern views actively read and promote the illegal Lithuanian publications, being well aware of their importance and value. It should be noted that women are often depicted as more open-minded and enthusiastic about the new developments. Although the social and cultural situation at the turn of the 19th – 20th centuries was significantly less favorable for women seeking to achieve higher levels of literacy, Žemaitė testifies to the changes already taking place: namely, women gradually become active and independent readers rather than just passive listeners. True, all the writers and independent readers capable of reflecting upon the role of writing both in their personal life and in that of the community, are still exclusively men. Žemaitė herself viewed the spread of literacy in the Lithuanian countryside most positively. Her attitude was revealed already in her first short story entitled “Matchmaking”, and it never changed. Characters in her subsequent stories that are more educated and fonder of reading newspapers and books are depicted as dreaming of the better future for the whole society, which could be allegedly achieved by abolishing the restrictions imposed on the free press and by introduction of the mass literacy. These characters usually assert positive value of the Lithuanian books and periodicals, and are actively engaged in reading and promoting them, thus standing in stark opposition to the negative characters that have attended the Russian schools imposed by the tsarist government and generally disregard the Lithuanian writing. This opposition should be regarded as means of supporting the Lithuanian publications and promoting them among the peasants – the means that the author keenly employed.

This article provides a short yet comprehensive historical review of ‘flexicurity,’ an equally acclaimed and debated public policy of the first two decades of the 20th century. Early understandings of ‘flexibility’ and ‘security’ in labor economics placed the two terms in antithetic positions, generally defining ‘flexibility’ as the lack of ‘security’ or considering ‘security’ as the cause for the lack of ‘flexibility.’ The change in social standards in the early 1990s generated the emergence of ‘transitional labor markets,’ a concept that further facilitated the appearance of a new labor market policy – ‘flexicurity.’ The article presents each of these stages in the development of flexicurity. It describes the stories of the three most influential flexicurity cases - the Dutch, the Danish, and the European Union.

In this study, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is implemented as an approach to analyze how horror in two short stories is used to reflect Mexican and American social issues. The findings suggest that there is a critique on the social order in societies by transforming these encounters into horrifying experiences.

This article deals with the analysis of the short story, ‘The Amir’s Homily’ of Rudyard Kipling’. It questions the colonial attitude of the very prominent British poet, short story writer and novelist of 20th century whose depiction of the natives is based on stereotyping. Kipling penned down number of poems, short stories, and novels from the last decade of the 19th century to the third decade of 20th century. The story “Amir’s Homily” mirrors the character of Afghan nations and a subsequent coercion of the iron ruler, Amir Abdul Rahman Khan. Analysis of the contents shows that throughout the story, the author sticks to the binary construct of ‘Self and Other’. His commentary and dialogues in the story show a narrative that determine Afghans the most unruly people under the stars and they deserved to be ruled and subjected to consistent oppression. On one hand, the story conditions Afghans and their Iron Amir (ruler) as dialectical opponents while on the other hand, he discards both parties and compares English Queen and people who are entwined in a human relationship. It reflects how English Queen is praised and honored and presented as a demi-god to be worshiped and idealized. On the other hand, his word choice and vocabulary for Afghan king and natives are completely harsh and dehumanizing. His ideal social and political order is only English order while others are crooked and uncivilized and do not deserve to be respected and valued.

Hjalmar Söderberg’s Short Story Titles This article examines short story titles by Hjalmar Söderberg (1869–1941). Like many short story writers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Söderberg uses very short titles. The majority of his titles are comprised of one or two nouns and a definite article. For example: ”Pelsen” [”The Fur Coat”], ”Kyssen” [”The Kiss”] and ”Kinesen” [”The Chinese”]. In comparison to other short story writers of the same period, Söderberg uses a broad variety of titles: he may use a double title in an ”exotic” travel story, or a dichotomous title in a debate-driven story. Generic titles are comprised mostly of compound words or of a phrase. The most common generic term is ”history”. Personal names appear only occasionally in Söderberg’s short story titles; instead generalized names are used. Several of Söderberg’s short story titles are allusive, as is common in the case of early twentieth-century short stories.

The purpose of the study is to explain the specifics of the category of the fantastic in the short stories of the 20th-century Italian writer Dino Buzzati. The article examines the features of the interpretation of the fantastic by a writer known for his special approach to the philosophical and aesthetic category that has remained relevant for several centuries. The choice of different collections of short stories for the study is due to the need to analyze the category of the fantastic using the examples of texts separated by a time distance. Over the years, the writer has remained true to the principles of interpretation of the fantastic that he once defined. The scientific novelty of the work is related to the identification of several types of the category of the fantastic in the material of Dino Buzzati’s short stories in accordance with the writer’s concept of the fantastic. As a result of the study, it was found that for Dino Buzzati, the fantastic is not something exceptional, opposed to reality. The category of the unreal is associated with the motives of expectation and fear, which allow a more accurate interpretation of the features of the studied category. In the analyzed stories, the types of the actually fantastic, the conditionally fantastic, and the symbolic fantastic are distinguished. The connection between the categories of the absurd and the fantastic is significant. The category of the incredible occupies an important place in Dino Buzzati’s aesthetic system, influencing its development.

Donald Barthelme’s short fiction is marked by a dashing concentration on everyday life, construction of meaning, and plurality of reality in addition to his playful, metafictional, and fragmentary style. Although a fertile ground for exploring sociopolitical matters, particularly in the mid and late 20th century America, the review of studies on Barthelme’s works highlights a lacuna in the application of conceivably pertinent sociological and political theories on Barthelme’s short stories. Accordingly, Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann’s The Social Construction of Reality (1966) could be a congruous theory with Barthelme’s sociological concerns in his short fiction. In their treatise, Berger and Luckmann see reality as a kind of “collective fiction” that is constructed by the processes of institutionalization, socialization, and everyday social interaction, particularly through language. In this article, we read “The Balloon” and “I Bought a Little City,” which are selected thematically, in light of “society as objective reality” through the concepts of objectivation, institutionalization, and legitimation. Linking literature and sociology, we aim to pinpoint how the stories observe, unveil, and potentially critique construction of meaning and the real workings of the processes in the social construction of reality.

The paper deals with the subject of temporary marriage between Russian sailors and Japanese women in fictional and non-fictional literature. The literary pattern of temporary marriage includes time limitation of the marriage, the language or/and cultural barrier and the man’s leaving at the end. The time limitation sometimes makes one or both spouses consider this marriage as legal, but “not true.” There are two main variants of the pattern in Russian travel notes of the 19th − early 20th century. The first is the positive one (A. Krasnov, D. Schreider, and N. Bartoshewsky). Both husband and wife are kind-hearted people, their family life is pure and real, although they do not entirely understand each other’s language. The second is the negative one (F. Knorring, D. Armfelt, G. de Vollan, and Vinogradov). Husband and wife are both pragmatic, rational, and cold, with the whole tradition turning into a sort of prostitution and insincere comedy. The plot variants, with one of the spouses being pragmatic, mercantile and cruel, and another loving, faithful, and suffering, are not common. Yuzhakov’s travel notes include such a rare case. The asymmetrical variant was more popular in Western fiction (Madame Butterfly). Russian fiction prefers the positive variant of the pattern. In short stories by D. Persky and M. Volkonsky, the authors transform the motives from Madame Chrysanthème by P. Loti and Madame Butterfly by J. L. Long by showing the Russians as noble people and achieving a happy end wherever possible.

In this article, the main concentrate is on heroine’s internalized consciousness which echoes in their behavior. All of the female protagonists in carter’s short stories; such as The Company of Wolves, and Werewolf and mainly in Wolf_Alice have similar characteristics with different conditions, in which they are represented in a very negative light with less than ideal roles. Katharine Mansfield is a successful female writer in the literary history of the 20th century, who marks a new period of English short stories. She uses tremendous modernistic techniques and digs deep beneath the surface of life to show the causes of human happiness and despair in her works. “The Garden Party” is one of her most famous and representative short stories. Previous studies have mostly focused on its artistic methods, themes and characters, as well as the combination of all, but there are only few studies choosing its narrative perspectives as their study topic. This paper analyzed the narrative perspective in this story, focusing on the use of nonfocalization, internal focalization and covert progression and the effects they have. It is found that the change of ways of focalization combining with covert progression in this story forms a parallel of objective description and ironic description with the plot development, adds a new group to the relationship between the former implied author and target readers, and reveals two different ways (idealistic and realistic) of understanding this story, letting readers reflect on the behaviors of the upper-middle-class people and ironically pointing out their selfish nature.

The article is an attempt to describe the specifics of the „new Bosnian narrative” as exemplified by Karim Zaimovic’s short stories collected in the book Tajna džema od malina. The text synthetically presents the new generation of prose writers clearly referring to the heritage of the so-called „narrative Bosnia” (J. Kršić). The generation of writers contemporary to Zaimovic, which dominated the literary scene in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the last decade of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century, was united by a creative motivation generated by common experiences, which was a reaction to the tragedy of the homeland war. The article briefly characterizes the „new narrative Bosnia”, highlighting the great tradition of narrative (pripovijetka) in local literature. Narrative/Short story is considered to be the most important and valued genre, which in its meaning goes far beyond purely literary boundaries – it has played and still plays an important role in the cultural, social, political and ideological context. In the text, it is shown that Zaimović’s stories, compared with (anti)war writing, are distinguished by: the way of constructing scenes that make up the story adapted from comic art, the presence of fantastic elements known from the work of „Borges writers”, as well as a characteristic, humorous style –where the author deals with the absurdity of war by the use of grotesque and satire, and describes the Sarajevo apocalypse using numerous metaphors and allegories. Even though, Zaimović’s texts cannot be treated as a model or the most representative example of “the new Bosnian narrative“, their unconventional way of presentation of the main theme as well as structural and compositional innovation have earned them an iconic status. The circumstances of the stories, and above all the fate of the young writer, made him a tragic symbol of the drama of war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A National-Proletarian Epic of Short Stories. Ivar Lo-Johansson’s Statarna This essay explores Ivar Lo-Johansson’s epic collection of short stories Statarna (1936–37). The collection is chronologically ordered and centres on the lives of rural proletarians (statare) in Sweden from the concluding decades of the 19th century to the first decades of the 20th century. Ivar Lo-Johansson is generally regarded as an icon of Swedish working-class literature, and Statarna is one of the real cornerstones of Lo-Johansson’s self-created public myth. This article aims to show that the basic ideological position of the author and his epic is based on national stereotypes (a point that may be further supported with reference to his 1920’s travel books). Statarna contains several stories that touch upon the so-called ”Galizier question”, referring to the transport of rural workers from the south-eastern parts of Poland to Sweden. These workers became known as Galizians, even if they came from other parts of Eastern Europe. These stories articulate a xenophobic attitude to these workers in line with the dominant reaction of the trade unions and the labour movement in general at the time. The ”Galizians” were regarded as intruders, with a lower morale than Swedish workers, and representative of the lowest species of labour power. This was especially true in those cases where the Galizians were used as scabs (strike breakers) during strikes. The narrator doesn’t sympathise with the domestic rural workers when they become used to the presence of the ”intruders”. In one story, ”Galizierna”, in which a young woman is raped, the woman is avenged when the rapist (who is, of course, one of the ”Galizierna”) is killed by a horse. Such stories are also based on national stereotypes. After writing his famous epic, in the early 1940’s, the author wrote a program for what he called the ”social short story”. This program is also based on nationalist arguments. Swedish authors are advised to orient towards the process of social development in Sweden at the time. The process behind the building of the welfare state – the Swedish welfare state, which, according to the author’s preferences for national stereotypes, is described as unique – is the appropriate subject for creating a Swedish short story that can be identified as Swedish, and only as Swedish. The idea was never to create an epic with close ties to working-class literature internationally.

This paper explores a set of narratives that the writer, educator and feminist leader Amanda Labarca published in the first quarter of the 20th century, namely the novel En tierras extra?as (1915), the short novel La l?mpara maravillosa and the collection of stories Cuentos a mi se?or (both 1921). We are interested in inscribing this corpus of Labarca?s work mainly in the criollismo, thought of as the Latin American and Chilean literary sensibility of the first half of the 20th century. With this, we contribute to the studies that have set out to explore one of Labarca?s most unknown areas: her literature. Specifically, it traces the spirit that runs through these texts, emphasizing the typification of discourses, characters and social contexts that allow sustaining the proposal of analyzing this prose from the point of view of criollismo. Indeed, the results show the presence of several characteristics of this trend, such as the presence of the peripheral or marginal element, the traveler as protagonist or the enhancement of local customs. It is concluded that Labarca?s lyrics dialogue with the proposals of Chilean criollismo, although they are also inspired by other aesthetic and ideological proposals of her time.

The article provides an overview of Slovenian translations of Polish literature in the 2019’s and 2020’s and reviewers’ responses to these works. A total of 23 translations of books were published in 2019, including five literary works (three collections of poetry and two novels). Among the 13 published translations of the following year there were eight literary works (one drama, a collection of short stories, three novels and three collections of poetry). The publishing of e-books also increased significantly in 2020. The published translations give Slovenian readers access to familiar, mostly world-renowned authors such as O. Tokarczuk, Z. Herbert, W. Szymborska, C. Miłosz, I. Karpowicz, while works by I. Ostachowicz, B. Nowicka, A. Kulisiewicz, J. Małecki, R. Franczak, and K. Dąbrowska were translated into Slovenian for the first time. With the exception of J. Kochanowski’s drama, all of the literary works translated were from the second half of the 20th century or the 21st century.

The paper analyses the short story collection The Untilled Field by the Irish writer George Moore (1852-1933) with the aim of establishing the subversive potential of these stories in the context of the criticism of the overpowering dogmas within the Irish society at the beginning of the 20th century. With this long neglected short story collection, George Moore reveals a darker, silenced side of Ireland, hidden from the public discourse of the socio-political mainstream of the period. His social criticism is primarily focused on some neuralgic aspects of the Irish society of the time, namely on the dominant influence of the Irish Catholic church on the collective ethos of the nation and, subsequently, on the spiritual and moral paralysis of the Irish people as well as on mass emigrations of the Irish to America. By pinpointing these, in his view, destructive social forces and the complex sociopolitical situation in Ireland during the formation of the modern Irish state, George Moore identifies a state of collective moral lethargy characterised by total absence of any possibility of individual affirmation through artistic agency. The importance of this short story collection, from the point of view of scientific research, lies in the foregrounding motivation behind it. In other words, in George Moore´s intention to dig deep into the relentless existence of the Irish people at one stage in the country´s history and to re-shape the well- established colonial representations which favoured falsely pastoral visions of Ireland. It was not until the second half of the 20th century that the stigma of ´un-patriotic´ and ´subversive´ was lifted from this short story collection giving it, though still limited, well-deserved attention and recognising its literary and artistic importance for Irish national culture and for its literature.

Questions about the similarity of the plots of Oirat written monuments with ancient Indian ones still remain insufficiently studied. Most of the Oirat works have not yet been introduced into scientific circulation or translated into Russian and other European languages. The article examines the origin of the plots of 17th and 18th century Oirat religious and didactic collection. “Aršān nomiyin tuuǰi” (“The Tale of the Nectar Teaching”), dating back to the literary monuments of Ancient India. The collection consists of sixty-four short Buddhist stories. It is framed by a diagram of the Tibetan Buddhist treatise “Lamrim,” presented in thesis form. The main provisions of the treatise are revealed in the collection with the help of artistic examples from various Indian and Tibetian sources. The collection is distinguished by a strict functional purpose; it introduces the laity to the course of Buddhist teachings and instructs them on the path of virtue. It was used by Buddhist monks as a guide in his preaching practice until the beginning of the 20th century. The article examines the structure and content of Oirat and ancient Indian stories in their narrative presentation, identifying similarities and local differences. As a result of the study, it was established that genetically similar plots help to better understand the content of short stories in the Oirat collection, which have lost their essential structural components due to various reasons. The stories of “The Tale of the Nectar Teaching” differ from the source texts by the extreme conciseness of their plots: they lack any descriptions or comparisons, the main focus is exclusively on heroes’ actions, the action unfolds abruptly and dynamically. We noted a significant similarity between the plots of “The Tale of the Nectar Teaching” and ancient Indian works both at the plot-compositional and at content levels. This fact indicates their genetic relationship. The identification of the local differences in the Oirat collection demonstrates the genesis of the plots of ancient Indian monuments and their fate outside India.

This article explores the way in which Agnes Owens, a 20th century working-class writer from Scotland, gives a literary voice to those most marginalized and underprivileged, a category of workers that is often defined as the precariat. The first part of the article traces the historic origins of the term precariat within marxism, then linking it to the growing number of people working today in low paid, short-term and uninsured jobs often beyond the pale of the rest of society. Their accompanying condition of neo-poverty is what Agnes Owens sought to dramatize in her novels and short stories, two of which – “Arabella” and Bad Attitudes – are chosen for more detailed discussion. The article seeks to show how Owens not only documents the lives of this modern precariat, but also how these new forms of social deprivation are feminized, since it is clearly the women who are most vulnerable in this new context of social and economic precarity.

The aim of this study is to point out to the significance of epiphany experienced by the character Elizabeth in “Odour of Chrysanthemums” with an eye on the social realities of the time in which the story was written. With the analysis of the story, this study challenges the claims that D. H Lawrence is a sexist by feminist critics such as Kate Millet. In the line with these, after a brief information on D. H. Lawrence and his stories that are similar to “Odour of Chrysanthemums” and social, cultural and financial realities of British Industrial society, the story has been handled. In the end, it has been observed that by portraying the main character Elizabeth as a woman who seems to have a sadistic pleasure of her husband’s death in the story, Lawrence criticizes not femininity but 20th century British society which imposes unbearable responsibilities on women. In addition to these, the study also criticises industrial society and helps the reader to have an idea concerning its social facts especially on the role of a woman in the working-class family.
