Abstract This paper is the second in a series dealing with adaptations of Bob Dylan songs in French. The first one was about the merits and perils of being faithful. This one deals with various strategies that somehow take more liberties with the original material. Four non mutually-exclusive strategies are envisioned: twisting the message, turning ones adaptation into an answer song, disregarding the original lyrics altogether, or tactful shape-shifting. All strategies are supported by examples taken from a vast corpus of songs spanning five decades. The paper end with a discussion of the lessons that can be learned from such exercise for translation studies and for the translation profession as a whole.

Grandmultiparity has long been classified as constituting a high risk factor in pregnancy. The complications associatedwith grandmultiparity have been divided into ante-partum, intra-partum and the postpartum. Intrapartum complications most commonlythought to be associated with grandmultiparity are malpresentations, placental disorders, postpartum hemorrhage and uterine rupture.Concerted effort should be instituted for effective family planning initiatives and specialized antepartum and intrapartum management. Objective: To determine the frequency of intrapartum complications and mode of delivery in grandmultipara. Material and Methods: Itis descriptive case series study conducted in department of obstetrics and gynaecology, Punjab Medical College and affiliated hospitals,Faisalabad from March 11, 2010 to September 10, 2010. Results: Grandmultipara women who fulfilled the inclusion criteria werestudied for intrapartum complications and mode of deliveries. One hundred and thirty nine patients were included in my study. Mean ageof the patients was 32.38 years. Mean gestational age for delivery was 37.06 weeks. Grandmultiparas had more intrapartumcomplications including malpresentation (19.4%), placental abruption (5.8%), placenta previa (8.6%), postpartum hemorrhage (6.5%)and ruptured uterus (1.4%). Mode of delivery was also assessed and 59%, 7.9 %, 31.7% of patients had normal vaginal delivery, instrumental vaginal delivery and cesarean section respectively. Conclusions: It is concluded that in the developing countries theincidence of grandmultiparity is still high with a significantly increased risk of complications. Grandmultiparity should be considered highrisk and needs active intervention by improving literacy, health care facilities, provision of safe and effective contraception andreproductive health status.

Purpose: to analyze the indicators of competitive activity of highly qualified judokas of light weight categories at the competitions of the Grand Slam, Grand Prix 2022 series. Material and methods. The following research methods were used during the work: analysis and generalization of scientific and methodological literature; timing; analysis of protocols and video recordings of fights of highly qualified judokas of weight categories up to 60 kg and up to 66 kg; methods of mathematical statistics. There were analyzed 57 fights of the final block of judoists of weight categories up to 60 kg (29 fights) and up to 66 kg (28 fights) at 8 competitions of the Grand Slam series and 2 series of Grand Prix 2022. The following indicators were recorded: the number of participants in the competition; the number of comments received by judokas; the number of disqualifications; the number of fights in extra time; the number of technical actions in the stance and on the ground. The percentage of the total number of comments and technical actions was calculated. Results: the analysis of the received remarks of highly qualified judokas of light weight categories shows that judokas of the weight category up to 60 kg received 55 remarks for all competitions, athletes up to 66 kg - 10 more (65 remarks), which shows their greater activity during the fight. For athletes under 60 kg, typical remarks for not fighting, avoiding the grip, false attack and going outside the working area. For judokas under 66 kg - for not fighting, prohibited grab, false attack and avoidance of grab. Also, athletes under 66 kg received remarks for interlacing fingers and blocking with one hand, unlike athletes under 60 kg. The analysis of the received disqualifications of judokas showed that in the weight category up to 60 kg 5 (17 %) fights ended in disqualification (4 - disqualifications for warnings; 1 for traumatic actions (head bending)). In the weight category up to 66 kg, 10 (36 %) fights ended in disqualification by reprimand. It was found that athletes of both weight categories perform approximately the same number of effective technical actions in the position of the rack, floor and lying down. The main effective technical actions that are most often used by athletes of each weight category separately in the rack, floor and lying position are revealed. Thus, in athletes of the weight category up to 60 kg, these were throws behind the back (46 %), grabs (13 %), throw over the head with a shin catch (13 %) and elbow lever (50 %). In judokas of weight category up to 66 kg these are throws over the back (18,5 %), varieties of front kicks (18,5 %) and elbow lever (100 %). Conclusions. It is established that during the fight athletes of light weight categories receive a fairly large number of comments related to reconnaissance wrestling during the fight. It was found that the fight of athletes of light weight categories mainly takes place in the stance. It is established that athletes in the weight category up to 66 kg are more technical and use more technical actions in competitions. But this applies only to the rack position. If we analyze the position of the floor, lying down, then athletes in the weight category up to 60 kg, on the contrary, have a greater arsenal of technical actions compared to the category up to 66 kg.

ABSTRACT When using a tournament in multi-period settings, firms have discretion in selecting the tournament horizon. For example, firms can use a single tournament (a grand tournament) or a sequence of multiple tournaments, each with a shorter horizon than a grand tournament (a repeated tournament). Firms have also begun to use a combination of both in which a repeated tournament is embedded within a grand tournament (a hybrid tournament). Using an experiment, we investigate whether the effect of tournament horizon on performance depends on the dynamic complexity of the task, which reflects the potential for effort in one period to influence the link between effort and performance in future periods. When dynamic task complexity is low, we find that performance is greatest in the hybrid tournament, followed by the repeated and then the grand tournament. In contrast, when dynamic task complexity is high, we find that performance is greatest in the repeated tournament, followed by the grand and hybrid tournaments, with similar performance in the latter two tournaments. More generally, the results of our experiment suggest that the effect of tournament horizon on performance depends on dynamic task complexity. These results can help firms make better decisions when designing their tournaments by reinforcing the need to align the tournament horizon with the task.

Purpose: to carry out an analysis of the competitive performance of highly qualified judokas at the 2022 Grand Slam series. Material and methods. During the work, the following research methods were used: analysis and generalization of scientific and methodical literature; timing; analysis of protocols and video recordings of fights of highly qualified judokas; methods of mathematical statistics. 120 fights of female judokas of all weight categories of the final block of 6 competitions of the Grand Slam 2022 series were analyzed. The following indicators were recorded: the number of comments received; number of disqualifications; the number of technical actions in the rack and in the parterre. The percentage of the total number of comments and technical actions was calculated. Results: the analysis of the received comments of highly qualified judokas shows that the athletes received the most comments for not fighting, avoiding capture, using false attacks, fighting in a defensive position, and going outside the working zone. The highest total number of comments is observed among female judokas in the weight categories up to 52 kg – 43 comments and +78 kg – 48. The smallest among athletes up to 48 kg – 27 comments and up to 70 kg – 21. It is observed that among athletes in the weight categories up to 48 kg, up to 52 kg, up to 57 kg, up to 78 kg, + 78 kg of the total number of fights, on average, 32 % ended in disqualification. In the weight categories up to 63 kg and up to 78 kg, this indicator is lower and amounts to 17% and 18%, respectively. Analysis of the technical actions of highly qualified judokas made it possible to reveal the total number of effective actions. Thus, the representatives of the categories up to 52 kg (22 evaluated technical actions: 18 (82 %) in the standing position, 4 (18 %), in the ground and lying position), up to 63 kg (19 technical actions: 18 (95 %) in the standing position and 1 (5 %), in the ground and lying position) and up to 70 kg (17 technical actions: 13 in the standing position (76 %), 4 (24 %) in the ground and lying position). Female athletes in the weight categories up to 48 kg (12 evaluated technical actions: 8 (67 %) in the standing position, 4 (33 %), in the floor and lying position) achieved fewer effective actions, up to 57 kg (12 technical actions: 10 (83 %) in the standing position and 2 (17 %), in the ground and lying position), up to 78 kg (13 technical actions: 11 in the standing position (85 %), 2 (15%) in the ground and lying position) and (19 technical actions: 18 (95 %) in a standing position and 1 (5 %), in the ground position and lying down) and + 70 kg (12 technical actions: 7 in the standing position (58 %), 5 (42 %) in the ground position and lying down). Conclusions. It has been established that during a fight, female athletes receive quite a large number of remarks for not fighting, avoiding capture, using false attacks, and fighting in a defensive position. This is explained by the fact that judokas conduct a reconnaissance fight, use defensive positions, false attacks in order to catch the opponent in a mistake. It was found that judokas of all weight categories mainly fight in a standing position. It also turned out that female athletes of middle weight categories are the most technical compared to judokas of light and heavy categories. Technical actions in the parterre position and lying down are more effective. Moreover, it is also observed that the athletes of the light and heavy categories mainly used restraint in the lying position, the judokas of the middle category additionally used the lever of the elbow joint and choking techniques. AbstractSixty packrat middens were collected in Canyonlands and Grand Canyon National Parks, and these series include sites north of areas that produced previous detailed series from the Colorado Plateau. The exceptionally long time series obtained from each of three sites (> 48,00014C yr BP to present) include some of the oldest middens yet discovered. Most middens contain a typical late-Wisconsinan glaciation mixture of mesic and xeric taxa, evidence that plant species responded to climate change by range adjustments of elevational distribution based on individual criteria. Differences in elevational range from today for trees and shrubs ranged from no apparent change to as much as 1200 m difference. The oldest middens from Canyonlands NP, however, differ in containing strictly xeric assemblages, including middens incorporating needles of Arizona single-leaf pinyon, far north of its current distribution. Similar-aged middens from the eastern end of Grand Canyon NP contain plants more typical of glacial climates, but also contain fossils of one-seed juniper near its current northern limit in Arizona. Holocene middens reveal the development of modern vegetation assemblages on the Colorado Plateau, recording departures of mesic taxa from low elevation sites, and the arrival of modern dominant components much later.

As of this writing we have completed the third year of a cooperative UW/GTNP archaeological project, with 1998 being the first season. The primary purpose here is to provide a brief overview of some of the accomplishments of that first field season. This basic "UW/NPS Research Center Annual Report" format then will have two more installments for 1999 and 2000. More attention is given in this first report to background such as the history of archaeological research in Grand Teton National Park, while subsequent reports will emphasize other types of information. No attempt is made here to provide detailed discussions of field methods, project environmental settings, or individual sites, features, and artifacts. Such description would be standard in some archaeological reporting formats, but much more detailed discussions, and more synthesis of regional prehistory, is being assembled in a series of project specific compliance reports, conference papers, seminar papers, a graduate student thesis, and journal articles. The possibility of a cooperative University of Wyoming/Grand Teton National Park venture was first proposed by Robert Schiller, Director of the Science and Resource Management Division at Grand Teton. It was apparent that a series of mutual benefits could result, where University archaeologists would aid the Park with its increasing number of federally-mandated compliance projects while at the same time providing student training and employment opportunities. In addition, nearly 400 sites had been located in Grand Teton National Park and the adjacent Rockefeller Parkway at that time, but very little current information was available for many of them and modem reevaluations were needed. At the same time, these various "applied research" compliance surveys and site revisit projects could contribute to broader theoretical frameworks relevant to our research throughout the region. The investigation of prehistoric settlement patterns and other aspects of landscape utilization is enhanced even by basic surface evidence, for example. The 1998 UW/GTNP CAP crew included the writer, UW Anthropology graduate students Alan Bartholomew and Mike Peterson, and volunteer archaeologist Jill Anderson. All work in Grand Teton has been coordinated with Park Historian Mike Johnson and USFS/GTNP Archaeologist Merry Haydon. Dave Hammond with the GTNP GPS unit and several other individuals aided with our projects. Yellowstone National Park Archaeologist Ann Johnson provided needed advice and materials on several occasions. All of our work was only possible because of the availability of the AMK Science Camp facilities, and the hospitality provided there by Hank and Mary Ann Harlow and their staff.

Most European early-modern states transitioned from composite monarchies into centralized ones. Essentially, composite monarchies were “more than one country under the sovereignty of one ruler.” As Moscow expanded and acquired the surrounding principalities either by inheritance or force, its grand princes enacted a series of legal and administrative reforms to dissolve the differences among its territories and create a centralized monarchy. These political reforms began under Ivan III, who instituted a standardization of Muscovite legal practice and formalized a defined system of social precedence, mestnichestvo, which accorded high rank to his newly acquired provincial elites within the Muscovite social system. Change could not happen overnight, and further legal reforms by Ivan IV, in addition to new religious reforms to eradicate differences of practice among his subjects, centralized the Grand Prince's political and religious authority.

Character education is a positive offer in the eradication of moral crises which particularly emerged in our students. Therefore, the internalization of values of character education in the educational institution is a must. As an Islamic education institution in Indonesia, the existence of Boarding school is considered to be able to develop values of character education which may be done through formal or non-formal curriculum. This is so because since its early existence, Boarding school has delineated its distinctive feature which is different from the other common types of education. Here, the implementation of character values have been integrated (within large portion) in the religious subjects. Character education, at least in the discourse, still a potent tool in addressing the arious issues that whack this nation. Not only in Indonesia, even in developed countries such as the United States, Germany, Japan, and, still rely on character education as a mainstay of kick to overcome various moral issues at hand. Character education became very warm issue in the education scene in Indonesia due to the rampant cases of moral that afflicts this nation, ranging from scenes in high State institutions, educational nstitutions until those cases that occur in the streets. The cases allegedly due to the failure of education that has lasted until today. Criticisms of the educational world tends to be mechanical, cognitive aspects than prefer the affective and psychomotor, and a series of spicy criticism more have graced the writings of educational expert. In order to respond to these concerns, the Government now, through the Ministry of education and culture and supported by the Ministry of Religion, raised character education agenda as the national education agenda. Sayang sayang thousand, until now there has been no clear concept of philosophy as well as on the technical implementation. This paper will offer solutions to various problems in philosophy as well as the implementation of character education. The author of the theme of humanist-religious is one of spirits in character education. The reason is that to improve the character of a nation, certainly could not depart from values which do not come from the nation itself. Humanist-religious is a character that belongs to the people of Indonesia so that character education is applied in this country inevitably had to depart from this character. After discussing the philosophy of character education from the perspective of humanist-religious, the author offers some alternatives that are related to the stages of education, learning methods, as well as the position of teachers in character education

ABSTRACT Different spiral generation mechanisms are expected to produce different morphological and kinematic features. In this first paper in a series, we carefully study the parameters of spiral structure in 155 face-on spiral galaxies, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, in the three gri bands. We use a method for deriving a set of parameters of spiral structure, such as the width of the spiral arms, their fraction to the total galaxy luminosity, and their colour, which have not been properly studied before. Our method is based on an analysis of a set of photometric cuts perpendicular to the direction of a spiral arm. Based on the results of our study, we compare the main three classes of spirals: grand design, multi-armed, and flocculent. We conclude that: (i) for the vast majority of galaxies (86 per cent), we observe an increase of their arm width with Galactocentric distance; (ii) more luminous spirals in grand design galaxies exhibit smaller variations of the pitch angle with radius than those in less luminous grand design spirals; (iii) grand design galaxies show less difference between the pitch angles of individual arms than multi-armed galaxies. Apart from these distinctive features, all three spiral classes do not differ significantly by their pitch angle, arm width, width asymmetry, and environment. Wavelength dependence is found only for the arm fraction. Therefore, observationally we find no strong difference (except for the view and number of arms) between grand design, multi-armed, and flocculent spirals in the sample galaxies.

Abstract The present issue of Chinese Semiotic Studies is published in memory of Thomas A. Sebeok. Sebeok was not only a master semiotician, but more importantly a grand artist in semiotics. As one of the most important contemporary figures in semiotics, linguistics, ethnology, and cultural studies, Sebeok made profound contributions to the progress of global semiotics through his distinguished theoretical achievements and promotional activities. His works have proven to be so relevant that they continue to exert a determinative influence and provide directions for the development of semiotics and its many subdivisions, especially biosemiotics, beyond the 20th century. Now, 21 years into the present century, during which semiotic studies around the world have made remarkable progress, it is about time to highlight some specific ways in which his contributions will continue to shape and guide semiotic studies, demonstrating the relevance of these contributions to the 21st century challenges. To this end, this special issue presents some up-to-date and informed studies that explore Sebeok’s contributions to semiotics and their vital implications for fundamental problems relevant to humanity as a semiotic animal in the present day and in the rest of this century and beyond.

<p>The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in Ethiopia and High Aswan Dam (HAD) in Egypt both operate on the Nile River, independent of a governing international treaty or agreement. As a result, the construction of the GERD, the Earth's eighth largest dam, ignited a furious debate among Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt on its filling policies and long-term operation. Ethiopia and Egypt's stance on the Nile River's water resources, combined with a nationalistic policy debate on the GERD's filling policies and long-term operation, has severely affected progress toward reaching agreeable terms before the first round of GERD filling was completed. These three countries continue to debate on the terms of agreement for the second round of GERD filling, scheduled to start by July 2021. We examined the GERD filling strategy for five- and six-year terms using time series data for the periods 1979–1987 and 1987–1992 to combine analyses for dry and wet seasons and investigate the potential impacts of filling the GERD above the downstream HAD using four HAD starting water levels. A model calibrated using MIKE Hydro results shows that during both five- and six-year terms of future GERD filling, Egypt would not need to invoke the HAD's minimum operating level. We pursued a narrative approach that appeals to both a technical and non-technical readership, and our results show the urgent need for cooperation at both policy and technical levels to mitigate and adapt to future climate change through the development of climate-proof agreements. Moreover, the results call for the riparian countries to move away from the current nationalistic policy debate approach and pursue a more cooperative, economically beneficial, and climate adaptive approach.</p>

In the long history of the feudal society of China, Kaifeng played a vital role. During the Northern Song Dynasty, Kaifeng became a worldwide metropolis. The important reason was that the Grand Canal, which was excavated during the Sui Dynasty, became the main transportation artery for the political and military center of the north and the economic center of the south. Furthermore, Kaifeng was located at the center of the Grand Canal, which made it the capital of the later Northern Song Dynasty. The Northern Song Dynasty was called “the canal-centered era.” The development of the canal caused a series of major changes in the society of the Northern Song Dynasty that were different from the previous ones, which directly led to the transportation revolution, and in turn, promoted the commercial revolution and the urbanization of Kaifeng. The development of commerce contributed to the agricultural and money revolutions. After the Northern Song Dynasty, the political center moved to the south. During the Yuan Dynasty, the excavation of the Grand Canal made it so that water transport did not have to pass through the Central Plains. The relocation of the political center and the change in the canal route made Kaifeng lose the value of connecting the north and south, resulting in the long-time fall of the Bianhe River. Kaifeng, which had prospered for more than 100 years, declined gradually, and by the end of the Qing Dynasty, it became a common town in the Central Plains. In ancient China, the rise and fall of cities and regions were closely related to the canal, and the relationship between Kaifeng and the Grand Canal was typical. The history may provide some inspiration for the increasingly severe urban and regional sustainable development issues in contemporary times.

Abstract Dietary policies are rapidly evolving, as the urgencies related to public health and sustainability of the food system are becoming more tangible and menacing. Increasingly, such policies bring up the need for a protein transition. This implies that society should consume less “animal protein,” while the protein gap should be filled with legumes and nuts, a series of so-called “plant-based alternatives” (i.e., imitations of animal source foods), bioreactor foods (e.g., lab-grown meat), and other sources of protein (e.g., algae and insects). The risk of such an approach, when taken too far, is that it tends to generate a simplistic categorization of the food system, whereby animal source foods (red meat in particular) are seen as intrinsically harmful and the non-animal replacements as mostly beneficial. This division is further fuelled by societal dynamics that are generated by vested interests, ideologies, societal anxieties, virtue signalling, white-hat bias, and scapegoating. Although there are obviously clear challenges that need to be urgently addressed within the livestock sector (as for most other parts of the food system, including various types of crop agriculture), we should not be blinded by such an irrational binary division. Moreover, the proposed solutions would come with their own issues (water-intensive crops with high chemical inputs, ultra-processed imitation foods, the negative effects of pasture land conversion on biodiversity and carbon deposits, concerns related to food security and food sovereignty, etc.) Instead, production and consumption practices need to be carefully evaluated based on a holistic assessment, and not through the myopic use of reductionist metrics that can easily be manipulated to reify preconceived points of view. The problems at hand are multidimensional, requiring proper contextualization. From a nutritional point of view, for instance, protein comes with substantial variability related to digestibility and amino acid profiles. Also, animal source foods offer much more than “protein” alone, including several key micronutrients and bio-active compounds that are often more difficult to obtain from plants. Within the area of sustainability, the entire climate change discussion would also benefit from a more inclusive assessment, thereby avoiding all-too static interpretations (ignoring the role of progress and technological development), negligence of true nutritional value when comparing very different foods (e.g., when using such metrics as CO2-eq/kg or CO2-eq/kcal), the use of global aggregates for local discussions, simplification of global warming kinetics (cf., the GWP100 vs. GWP* debate), and so forth. Taken together, Grand Challenges should aim primordially at the achievement of adequate essential nutrition within specific dietary contexts that need to be more broadly assessed (also including lifestyle, cardiometabolic health status, culture, food preferences, purchase power, etc.) and that should be generated within the constraints of a sustainable agricultural operating space. Some red lines may indeed need to be drawn by policy makers (e.g., halting of deforestation or water pollution), whereas some other practices may need to be optimized (veterinary care, nutrient cycles, emissions, etc.) or promoted (carbon sequestration, improvement of soil health and biodiversity, etc.), but it would be a fatal mistake to consider animal agriculture as a monolithic entity that needs to be severely restricted or even dismantled. Taking livestock out of the equation would undermine our only hope on a healthy and sustainable food system. They are essential for the upcycling of otherwise inedible materials (forage, waste and side streams, etc.) into the high-quality foods that are needed to combat malnutrition globally, the valorisation of marginal lands that are otherwise unproductive, the sequestration of carbon and the (re)generation of soil health, the provision of crucial ecosystem services and landscape management, the generation of livelihoods, and the (all-too often underestimated) treasuring of our various cultural legacies. Instead, an improved integration of animal and crop agriculture should be central in any Grand Challenge. This should be done based on the best available science, but also by being prudent about the potential black swans further down the road. Complex systems always kick back in unpredictable manners, especially if they are radically altered through hurried top-down approaches.

_ This is the fourth in a series of six articles on SPE’s Grand Challenges in Energy, formulated as the output of a 2023 workshop held by the SPE Research and Development Technical Section in Austin, Texas. Described in a JPT article last year, each of the challenges will be discussed separately in this series: geothermal energy; net-zero operations; improving recovery from tight/shale resources; digital transformation; carbon capture, utilization, and storage; and education and advocacy. _ The interval from the oil price decline of 2014–2015 through the global COVID-19 pandemic of 2020–2022 was a difficult period for the upstream oil and gas business. The industry has responded, as so many times before, by seeking to reduce structural costs with the minimum impact to required new investments, including those in nondiscretionary domains (security, including cybersecurity, and safety, health, and environmental performance) as well as those required to appropriately hedge against the emergence of new, more sustainable energy sources. Digital transformation is one of the key opportunities for the industry to systematically reduce costs across multiple business domains. While there has been active discussion of the “digital oil field” for several decades, the economic shock of the past decade revived interest in the application of digital technologies across the enterprise to improve the cost structure of businesses. Of course, at the same time, entirely new industries, such as social media, have emerged exploiting new digital technologies, including machine learning, web software and connectivity, and cloud storage and computing. These technologies have also transformed traditional industries such as retail and manufacturing. But taking the same path in the upstream industry has some special challenges and opportunities. This review focuses on digital transformation opportunities that are, to a greater or lesser degree, unique to the special data and operating environment of the modern petroleum industry. There are many valuable opportunities, including business process automations, that can and should be adopted by upstream companies, but are not different in kind from such innovations in other industries. Data Is Not the New Oil One challenge is the sheer mass and heterogeneity of upstream data. The upstream oil and gas industry is an old industry, with both business and technical records stretching back for many companies to the 19th century. These can be in paper form or a variety of digital forms reflecting the different methods of storing data since computers became a standard business and scientific tool in the 1950s. Conversion of this data to more modern formats suitable for cloud storage, for example, is not cost-free. Thus, a key principle in digital transformation is that it must be value-driven. A frequently used phrase, “data is the new oil,” is, at least for the oil and gas business itself, deeply misleading. Most of the data held by any enterprise, be it in libraries, shared data servers, or personal hard drives, is not economically useful. Much other data, while potentially valuable, requires such substantial spending on quality assurance, data curation, data transfer to points of computation, and use of (highly paid) domain experts to interpret data analysis and make business decisions that there is no pathway to reliable value based on the data.

_ This is the second of a series of six articles on SPE’s Grand Challenges in Energy, formulated as the output of a 2023 workshop held by the SPE Research and Development Technical Section in Austin, Texas. Described in a JPT article last year, each of the challenges will be discussed separately in this series: geothermal energy; improving recovery from tight/shale resources; net-zero operations; carbon capture, storage, and utilization; digital transformation; and education and advocacy. The first article, “An SPE Grand Challenge Update on Geothermal Energy,” was published in April 2024. _ At COP28, more than 50 oil and gas companies, many of them national companies, took a historic step toward decarbonization by launching the Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter. The charter represents significant short- and long-term ambitions to reduce emissions, including net-zero operations by 2050 at the latest. This article explores the importance of this effort, the opportunities available to the industry to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and the key technologies needed to achieve the net-zero goal. The Size of the Prize According to the latest data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), the production, transport, and processing of oil and gas resulted in 5.1 GtCO2e in 2022. These emissions stem from the production and delivery of oil and gas and the combustion of fossil fuel necessary for operations on-site (Scope 1), and the import of electricity from external sources consumed in oil and gas facilities (Scope 2). These Scope 1 and 2 emissions represent just under 15% of global energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This is a sizable contribution, nearly equivalent to all energy-related GHG emissions from road transport, highlighting the relative scale of the opportunities associated with implementing operational changes in the industry. The faster and deeper these emissions reductions are, the more significant the impact will be. Sources of Emissions To understand the various paths to net zero an oil and gas company can follow, it is critical to map the sector’s sources of emissions throughout the value chain. It is generally recognized that around 60% of an integrated company’s emissions emanate from upstream operations, predominantly from onshore assets. Refining and distribution are the second main contributors, but of a smaller order of magnitude, notably because of significant efforts already made by companies to reduce emissions from their refining assets and levers of decarbonization potentially easier to implement. However, emissions volumes and intensities differ significantly across regions, countries, and asset types. An asset operating in the Canadian oil sands region will have a very different emissions profile compared to an offshore platform in Western African countries. These differing profiles also call for tailored emission-reduction approaches. This means decarbonization studies must be carried out at the asset level, allowing operators to identify the most cost-effective means of tackling emissions reduction.

The evolution of the passive margin off the coast of Eastern Canada has been characterized by a series of rifting episodes which caused widespread extension of the lithosphere and associated structural anomalies, some with the potential to be classified as a result of lithospheric boudinage. Crustal thinning of competent layers is often apparent in seismic sections, and deeper Moho undulations may appear as repeating elongated anomalies in gravity and magnetic surveys. By comparing the similar evolutions of the Grand Banks and the Norwegian Lofoten-Vesterålen passive margins, it is reasonable to explore the potential of the same structures being present. This investigation supplements our knowledge of analogous examples in the Norwegian Margin and the South China Sea with a thorough investigation of seismic, gravity and magnetic signatures, to determine that boudinage structures are evident in the context of the Grand Banks. Through analysis of geophysical data (including seismic, gravity and magnetic observations), a multi-stage boudinage mechanism is proposed, which is characterized by an upper crust short-wavelength deformation ranging from approximately 20–80 km and a lower crust long-wavelength deformation exceeding 200 km in length. In addition, the boudinage mechanism caused slightly different structures which are apparent in the block geometry and layeredness. Based on these results, there are indications that boudinage wavelength increases with each successive rifting phase, with geometry changing from domino style to a more shearband/symmetrical style as the scale of deformation is increased to include the entire lithosphere.

This study aims to reveal how differences in criminal monstrosity are portrayed in Red Dragon novel (1981), with the adaptation of his television series titled Hannibal (2013). The problem discussed is the blurred norms as the form of criminal monstrosity development in Hannibal. The theory used is the criminal monstrosity developed by Alexa Wright (2013). This research uses analytical descriptive method. Data from novels and television series are described and compared to get the grand concept of criminal monstrosity. The results showed that the blurred norms in Hannibal can be seen through normalization of cannibalism by using culinary aesthetic, the role of Will Graham from FBI to Hannibal’s crime partner, and a more intimate relationship between Will and Hannibal. These blurred norms created a new monstrosity narrative: a monstrous criminal nature behind a person who looks normal and able to function properly in society.

The Oncology Grand Rounds series is designed to place original reports published in the Journal into clinical context. A case presentation is followed by a description of diagnostic and management challenges, a review of the relevant literature, and a summary of the authors’ suggested management approaches. The goal of this series is to help readers better understand how to apply the results of key studies, including those published in Journal of Clinical Oncology, to patients seen in their own clinical practice. A healthy 51-year-old woman presented with increasing abdominal and pelvic pain. Computed tomography imaging of the abdomen and pelvis showed an 11.6-cm pelvic mass, retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy, right hydronephrosis, and mesenteric tumor deposits ( Fig 1A ). A serum CA-125 was elevated at 1,149 U/mL. She underwent primary surgical cytoreduction including hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, appendectomy, resection of pelvic tumor, omentectomy, and low anterior resection with colorectal anastomosis. Intraoperatively, she was noted to have bilateral ovarian masses, pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenopathy, and a 4-cm omental tumor; in addition, both the uterus and rectosigmoid colon had adherent tumor deposits. All gross tumor was resected during the procedure. Final pathology confirmed high-grade serous carcinoma of ovarian origin ( Fig 1B ) that was determined to be stage IIIC as a result of upper abdominal involvement with greater than 2-cm tumor deposits, as well as retroperitoneal lymph node involvement. She underwent germline genetic testing, which did not identify a mutation in the BRCA1, BRCA2, BRIP1, RAD51C, or RAD51D genes. She presented for adjuvant chemotherapy after an optimal (R0) resection.

This article develops a feminist reading of the biographical action series featuring Ip Man, the Wing Chun grand master lionized for mentoring Bruce Lee, as a set of culturally inflected practices in order to probe the sociohistorical structure that embeds and overdetermines these productions and allows for new, subversive potentialities. Building upon situated engagement, my analysis traces how the hypermasculine violent yanggang aesthetic tradition takes on new life by reclaiming women's voices in the Ip Man film franchise. I also identify the ways in which this filmic remaking of Ip's life story builds an alternative embodiment that unsettles musculature as the ground of colonialist/nationalist dominance and lays the basis for a new horizon of justice encapsulated by the flexible and elastic “Be Water” sensibility. As human beings are facing the common threat posed by prevailing toxic masculinity, these lessons, I argue, are crucial for us to find a path through the turbulence and build a more peaceful world.

Abstract Fourteen laboratories participated in a collaborative study to compare abilities of AOAC modified copper catalyst Kjeldahl method, 978.02, and the generic combustion method, 990.03, to analyze the nitrogen content of fertilizer materials. Combustion analyses are more time efficient, more accurate, and less hazardous than Kjeldahl analyses. There were 3 different types of instrumentation involved in the collaborative study: (1) Leco FP-428 Nitrogen Determinator; (2) Perkin-Elmer 2410 Series II Nitrogen Analyzer; (3) Carlo-Erba 1500 Series II Nitrogen Analyzer. Thirty samples of fertilizer containing 1–67% N included 2 ACS grade standard materials: ammonium nitrate, theory 35.00% N; and dicyandiamide, theory 66.64% N. A diammonium phosphate and urea mixture (3 + 1 ; 1.0 mm grind) and 2 ACS grade standard materials of ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate were supplied for repetitive combustion analyses. Overall method performance of the combustion method was at least as good as the modified Kjeldahl method. Repeatability standard deviation (Sr) values for the combustion method ranged from 0.09 to 0.34 vs the modified Kjeldahl method range of 0.06–0.49; reproducibility standard deviation (SR) values for the combustion method ranged from 0.13 to 1.07 vs the range of 0.09–3.57 for the modified Kjeldahl method. The grand mean was 20.78% for the combustion method, and 20.79% for the modified Kjeldahl method using various fertilizers. The average ranges of sr and SR for the methods were, respectively, 0.17 and 0.29 for the combustion method, and 0.19 and 0.54 for the modified Kjeldahl method. The method was adopted first action by AOAC INTERNATIONAL.

According to Wolfgang Welsch, the human environment is subject to aestheticization, or ‘embellishment and styling’, to make it more pleasant to perceive and participate. This cultural trend is reflected most strikingly in contemporary media forms. Radio aestheticization concerns both the arrangement (structure) of programme content and the stylistics of the said content in order to make other media forms, like video games, compelling, immersive and interactive. In the popular video game series Grand Theft Auto (GTA hereafter), the player character can choose to listen to a variety of radio stations while driving. This article argues that the aestheticization of radio in GTA does not merely provide an enjoyable audial background but also co-creates the world of the game by interacting with players’ actions through the broadcast content and building the ambience of the world of the game through the style of this content. The programme flow, as a system of words and sounds, co-operates with the game system, increasing the players’ involvement with the game (the sense of play) and the aural specification of the game world (the sense of place).

_ The oil and gas industry faces a rapidly changing world of multiple challenges and opportunities, especially with growing climate and sustainability concerns. About a decade ago, SPE conducted a series of workshops to define the grand challenges in technology and R&D for the upstream oil and gas industry for the following decade. It identified 5 + 1 grand challenges (Table 1). To define the set of grand challenges for the next decade, in a much more unpredictable environment, we held an SPE workshop in Austin, Texas, in January 2023. Panelists from IOCs, NOCs, and service companies, as well as environmental and financial stakeholders in the emerging energy system, surveyed the rapidly changing energy landscape. The workshop then facilitated sessions of the more than 120 thought leader participants to define grand challenges that are impactful for society and our industry and have a significant R&D/technology component that is aligned with the capabilities of the SPE membership. We arrived at a list of five technical grand challenges: improved recovery from tight/shale resources, net-zero operations, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), geothermal energy, and digital transformation. Additionally, we identified a sixth “bonus” nontechnical challenge—education and advocacy, since we believe that more effective engagement with thought leaders outside our industry will be required to advance and deploy new technologies in all five of these areas. Table 2 summarizes the technical challenges and their impacts. We believe that this work will help the industry focus its R&D and technology efforts on the highest-value activities for both industry and society. We now summarize each of these new grand challenges. Improved Recovery From Tight/Shale Resources Notwithstanding the rapid growth of non-hydrocarbon energy sources and carriers, oil and natural gas demand are projected to continue rising through 2050 (EIA 2023). In the past 20 years, horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing were combined to extract hydrocarbons from unconventional shale resources, which helped us meet rising global oil demand. However, production from existing shale oil wells declines quickly, and ultimate recoveries are often less than 10%. To meet global demand, we must improve recovery with minimal environmental impact. Tight and shale oil reservoirs have unique challenges. For example, shale reservoirs are subject to clay swelling and formation damage. Permeabilities are ultra-low, often on the order of nano-Darcys, which leads to extremely low flow rates and to transport dominated by diffusion. Thus, hydraulic and natural fractures are necessary, and geomechanics/rock compaction plays an important role. Many traditional improved oil recovery (IOR) strategies are challenging in tight and shale reservoirs. The small pores make waterflooding techniques difficult, and the low permeability hampers well-to-well methods. Thus, single-well, huff-and-puff strategies are the most common IOR methods. Injectants include miscible and immiscible gases (CO2, CH4, and N2) and chemicals (surfactants, solvents, and nanoparticles). In addition, thermal methods may allow control of oil viscosity and pressurization of the reservoir.

Early Cretaceous volcanism is widespread in the eastern Scotian Basin. The stratigraphic position of volcanic rocks within wells was re-evaluated and the volcanological character of the rocks was refined by study of cuttings and well logs. Hauterivian–Barremian volcanic rocks on the SW Grand Banks and Aptian–Albian volcanic rocks in the Orpheus Graben and SE Scotian Shelf resulted from Strombolian type eruptions. More extensive Hawaiian type flows were mapped from seismic profiles near the Mallard and Brant wells on the SW Grand Banks and they appear to have been derived from local basement highs with a positive magnetic anomaly interpreted as volcanic centres. Igneous rocks in the Hesper well on the SE Scotian Shelf are the erosional remnant of basaltic flows that terminated at the paleoshoreline. They correlate with basalt flows both in extensive outcrop on Scatarie Ridge and in several Orpheus Graben wells. The interpretation of the Hesper basalts as an erosional remnant of more extensive basalt flows is consistent with detrital petrographic evidence for substantial uplift of the inboard part of the Scotian Basin in the Hauterivian–Aptian. Widespread volcanic activity indicates a regional and long-lived magma source, which resulted in elevated regional heat flow. Effects of this heat flow are seen in sedimentary rocks of the Sable Subbasin and it had a discernable impact on hydrocarbon maturation.

Abstract BACKGROUND The precise movement of proteins and vesicles is an essential ability for all eukaryotic cells. Nowhere is this more evident than during the remarkable transformation that occurs in spermiogenesis—the transformation of haploid round spermatids into sperm. These transformations are critically dependent upon both the microtubule and the actin cytoskeleton, and defects in these processes are thought to underpin a significant percentage of human male infertility. OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE This review is aimed at summarising and synthesising the current state of knowledge around protein/vesicle transport during haploid male germ cell development and identifying knowledge gaps and challenges for future research. To achieve this, we summarise the key discoveries related to protein transport using the mouse as a model system. Where relevant, we anchored these insights to knowledge in the field of human spermiogenesis and the causality of human male infertility. SEARCH METHODS Relevant studies published in English were identified using PubMed using a range of search terms related to the core focus of the review—protein/vesicle transport, intra-flagellar transport, intra-manchette transport, Golgi, acrosome, manchette, axoneme, outer dense fibres and fibrous sheath. Searches were not restricted to a particular time frame or species although the emphasis within the review is on mammalian spermiogenesis. OUTCOMES Spermiogenesis is the final phase of sperm development. It results in the transformation of a round cell into a highly polarised sperm with the capacity for fertility. It is critically dependent on the cytoskeleton and its ability to transport protein complexes and vesicles over long distances and often between distinct cytoplasmic compartments. The development of the acrosome covering the sperm head, the sperm tail within the ciliary lobe, the manchette and its role in sperm head shaping and protein transport into the tail, and the assembly of mitochondria into the mid-piece of sperm, may all be viewed as a series of overlapping and interconnected train tracks. Defects in this redistribution network lead to male infertility characterised by abnormal sperm morphology (teratozoospermia) and/or abnormal sperm motility (asthenozoospermia) and are likely to be causal of, or contribute to, a significant percentage of human male infertility. WIDER IMPLICATIONS A greater understanding of the mechanisms of protein transport in spermiogenesis offers the potential to precisely diagnose cases of male infertility and to forecast implications for children conceived using gametes containing these mutations. The manipulation of these processes will offer opportunities for male-based contraceptive development. Further, as increasingly evidenced in the literature, we believe that the continuous and spatiotemporally restrained nature of spermiogenesis provides an outstanding model system to identify, and de-code, cytoskeletal elements and transport mechanisms of relevance to multiple tissues.

AbstractThe Venetian poet and librettist Giulio Strozzi (1583–1652) spent much of his career glorifying the Serenissima through a series of theatrical pieces. His only epic poem, the Venetia edificata (1621, 1624), while ostensibly a celebration of the republic, shows a level of commitment to Galileo Galilei (1564–1643) and to Galileo’s science that is unique among poets of the time, Venetian or otherwise. It is the apex of Strozzi’s artistic project to incorporate Galileo’s discoveries and texts into poetic works. The Venetia edificata also represents the culmination of a fifteen-year effort to gain patronage from the Medici Grand Dukes in Florence. While the first, incomplete version is dedicated to the Venetian Doge, the second, finished version is dedicated to Grand Duke Ferdinando II de’ Medici of Florence. More than a decade after Galileo’s departure from the Veneto to Florence, Strozzi cites from Galileo’s early works, creates a character inspired by Galileo, incorporates the principles of Galileo’s science into the organizing structure of the poem, and answers one of Galileo’s loudest complaints about Torquato Tasso’s Jerusalem Delivered (1581). Strozzi’s strategies both in writing the Venetia edificata and in seeking patronage for it underscore the ambivalent response to Galileo in contemporary poetry.

The retelecast of Ramayana is presumed to have garnered the record as one of the most viewed television series with about 7.7 million viewers worldwide. Mythologies in India are closely intertwined with the socio-cultural aspects of the people, dictating the way the society functions. Such a massive reception of the mythsafter years of their origin only reiteratesthe significance and influence of mythologies even today. The retelling of mythologies is not a current phenomenon, as evident in the presence of the different versionsof Ramayana and Mahabharata. From films, dramas to television series, the two narratives have provided the blueprint for artists from all fields to explore and re-imagine them. The most significant change, however, occurred in recent times with the emergence of the often marginalized section revisiting the two grand narratives, the most prominent being Feminists and Dalits, and give space tothe often marginalized characters that are assigned the role of the 'other.' Writing and Reading are often considered political. The meaning-making process and what is being told or what is omitted is governed by the hegemonic control of the one in power. Mythology is typically considered as the avenuefor Men. Women represented in the epics hardly play a significant role. The omission of the voice of the women like Supernekha, Draupadi, Mandodari, Sita, Urmillafrom the grand narratives becomes all the more vivid as they representthe voice of the sidelined or marginalized. The right to form history belongs to the one ruling. In this case, it is the patriarchal setup that allows only for the androcentric viewpoint in the process relegating all the other possible views. In this vein, using an overarching lens of Feminism, the paperattempts to see Kavita Kane's The Lanka's Princess, from the viewpoint of the often voicelesscharacters to dismantle the binary structureand subvert Androcentrism.

Tommy Sexton was a performer from the age of 10 playing Alice in St Bon’s school production of Alice in Wonderland until his death at 36 playing himself in a proposed television movie, Adult Children of Alcoholics. He began acting professionally with the Newfoundland Travelling Theatre Company in 1970 and his professional writing and acting career included CODCO stage plays (1973-88), White Niggers of Bond Street (1979), the Wonderful Grand Band (1980-83), Two Foolish to Talk About (1983-84), S&M Comic Book (1985-86) and the CODCO television series (1987-93). But Tommy Sexton was more than the sum of these productions; he was more even than the cast of characters he created, who range from Nanny Hynes to Duncan (“Queen’s Councillor and closet hairdresser”) to take-offs of Barbara Walters and Crystal Carrington. He was an intelligent, committed and consummate professional writer and actor. In a preliminary audience testing for CODCO’s television series, a test audience in Peterborough, Ontario voted Tommy best actor and best actress. Newfoundland loved him and during the past five years readers of the Newfoundland Herald almost consistently voted him best actor.

In this study, the results from the analysis of annual ring widths (‘Dm’) time series of two “very sensitive” to the climate and solar–climate relationships of long lived European beech (Fagus sylvatica) samples (on age of 209 ± 1 and 245 ± 5 years correspondingly) are discussed. Both series are characterized by very good expressed and relating to the solar magnetic Hale cycle 20–22-year oscillations. A good coincidence between the changes of ‘Dm’ and the growth or fading of the solar magnetic cycle is found. The transition effects at the beginning and ending of the grand Dalton (1793–1833) and Gleissberg minima (1898–1933) are very clearly visible in the annual tree ring width data for the one of beech samples. Some of these effects are also detected in the second sample. The problem for the possible “lost” sunspot cycle at the end of 18th century is also discussed. A prediction for a possible “phase catastrophe” during the future Zurich sunspot cycles 26 and 27 between 2035–2040 AD as well as for general precipitation upward and temperature fall tendencies in Central Bulgaria, more essential after 2030 AD, are brought forth.

In the present study, using dynamic mean field theory complemented by grand canonical molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the extent to which the density distributions encountered during the dynamics of capillary condensation are related to those distributions at equilibrium or metastable equilibrium in a system at fixed average density (canonical ensemble). We find that the states encountered can be categorized as out of equilibrium or quasi-equilibrium based on the magnitude of the driving force for mass transfer. More specifically, in open-ended slit pores, pore filling via double bridging is an out of equilibrium process, induced by the dynamics of the system, while pore filling by single bridge formation is connected to a series of configurations that are equilibrium configurations in the canonical ensemble and that cannot be observed experimentally by a standard adsorption process, corresponding to the grand canonical ensemble. Likewise, in closed cap slits, the formation of a liquid bridge near the pore opening and its subsequent growth while the initially detached meniscus from the capped end remains immobilized are out of equilibrium processes that occur at large driving forces. On the other hand, at small driving forces, there is a continuous acceleration of the detached meniscus from the capped end, which is associated with complete reversibility in the limit of an infinitesimally small driving force.

Two of the global issues are finding new, clean energy sources to replace increasingly exhausting fossil fuels and overcome the problem of environmental pollution and climate change. In recent years, organic-metal framework series has been considered as a great candidate for H¬2 storage and CO2 capture to provide clean energy and reduce environmental pollution. Among them, MIL-88A-Fe has a stable and flexible structure in moist environments and high porosity. Therefore, in this research, hydrogen (H2) storage and carbon dioxide (CO2) capture capacities in MIL-88A-Fe were assessed quantitatively. By the grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation, the adsorption capacities of MIL-88A were elucidated via the adsorption isotherms, heats of adsorption at finite temperatures of 77 K and 298 K and pressures up to 100 bar. The results show that parameterizing force fields by combining DDEC method to calculate atomic partial charges for electrostatic interactions and the universal force field parameters for the Lennard-Jones interactions provide a quick and reliable method to evaluate gas capture and storage capacities of porous materials. The results also indicate that the abilities of H2 storage and CO2 capture of MIL-88A-Fe in gravimetric capacities were not very high; however, they were noticeable in volumetric uptakes. The hydrogen molecule is strongly adsorbed in the hollow positions of O and Fe atoms, while the CO2 molecule is more evenly distributed in the sorbent.

Abstract Carbon compound concentrations in plant tissues depend on the environment in which plants grow. However, little is known about how these concentrations vary across a range of forest environmental conditions. Our study examined root tissue (phloem, cambium, phellum, and phello-derm) collected from naturally regenerated mature Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca [Bessn.] Franco) trees in eight stands on three habitat type series encompassing a range of temperature and moisture conditions. The objective was to determine root chemical composition (sugar, starch, phenol, and tannin) differences among the habitat types. Douglas-fir roots collected from dry, warm Douglas fir habitat types had sugar concentrations of 4% compared to 3% for roots from cool, moist habitat types. Root samples collected from Douglas-fir habitat types showed tannin concentrations about double those from grand fir or western redcedar habitat types. Phenol/tannin ratios for the cool, moist habitat types were about double those from warm, dry Douglas-fir habitat types. Roots sampled from western redcedar habitat types had phenol concentrations and phenol/sugar ratios more than 50% higher than those from Douglas-fir and grand fir habitat types. We speculate that root chemistry of Douglas-fir growing on Douglas-fir habitat types could make them more drought resistant but less disease resistant, while Douglas-fir growing on western redcedar types would be less drought resistant but more disease resistant. Douglas-fir growing on warm, dry sites allocated more carbon to tannin production and less to phenols. FOR. SCI. 46(4):531–536.

Observations in the Rocky Mountains and elsewhere indicate that vegetation patterns that develop soon after forest fires vary considerably. This variability is evident even on sites that have similar environmental conditions. The causes of this heterogeneity are not well known, but it is now recognized that the conditions present soon after fire, and the plants that become established initially, influence the nature of the vegetation over the next 100-200 years or more (Glenn-Lewin et al. 1992). Our research investigates the causes of the variability in vegetation establishment following fire in Grand Teton National Park and the Bridger Teton National Forest. The specific objectives of our research are as follows: 1) determine the range of variability in the patterns of early postfire succession; 2) determine which environmental and historical variables are most important in controlling vegetation development following fire; 3) elucidate the importance of landscape position and between-patch interactions during early postfire succession; 4) develop a series of multivariate models that will predict the characteristics of early succession in different situations; and 5) project the most probable trajectories of each pioneer community type.

Accurate prediction of water quality indicators plays an important role in the effective management of water resources. The models which studied limited water quality indicators in natural rivers may give inadequate guidance for managing a canal being used for water diversion. In this study, a hybrid structure (WA-PSO-SVR) based on wavelet analysis (WA) coupled with support vector regression (SVR) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms was developed to model three water quality indicators, chemical oxygen demand determined by KMnO4 (CODMn), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), and dissolved oxygen (DO), in water from the Grand Canal from Beijing to Hangzhou. Modeling was independently conducted over daily and monthly time scales. The results demonstrated that the hybrid WA-PSO-SVR model was able to effectively predict non-linear stationary and non-stationary time series and outperformed two other models (PSO-SVR and a standalone SVR), especially for extreme values prediction. Daily predictions were more accurate than monthly predictions, indicating that the hybrid model was more suitable for short-term predictions in this case. It also demonstrated that using the autocorrelation and partial autocorrelation of time series enabled the construction of appropriate models for water quality prediction. The results contribute to water quality monitoring and better management for water diversion.

Condition monitoring can improve the reliability of wind turbines, which can effectively reduce operation and maintenance costs. The temperature prediction model of wind turbine gearbox components is of great significance for monitoring the operation status of the gearbox. However, the complex operating conditions of wind turbines pose grand challenges to predict the temperature of gearbox components. In this study, an online hybrid model based on a long short term memory (LSTM) neural network and adaptive error correction (LSTM-AEC) using simple-variable data is proposed. In the proposed model, a more suitable deep learning approach for time series, LSTM algorithm, is applied to realize the preliminary prediction of temperature, which has a stronger ability to capture the non-stationary and non-linear characteristics of gearbox components temperature series. In order to enhance the performance of the LSTM prediction model, the adaptive error correction model based on the variational mode decomposition (VMD) algorithm is developed, where the VMD algorithm can effectively solve the prediction difficulty issue caused by the non-stationary, high-frequency and chaotic characteristics of error series. To apply the hybrid model to the online prediction process, a real-time rolling data decomposition process based on VMD algorithm is proposed. With aims to validate the effectiveness of the hybrid model proposed in this paper, several traditional models are introduced for comparative analysis. The experimental results show that the hybrid model has better prediction performance than other comparative models.

This article traces the structural roots of the current crisis in US-Russia relations (the weakening of US hegemony and the resurgence of Russian power), and chronicles the series of contingencies that accompanied Donald Trump's rise to the presidency and his chaotic first few months in office. The details of Russia's influence over the results of the election through the release of hacked Democratic Party emails, and over the composition and policy of the new Trump Administration, are still emerging. The chances of a “grand bargain” between Trump and Putin look increasingly remote, however. Russia's efforts to dabble in American politics seem to have blown back, and made rapprochement between Moscow and Washington more difficult. This is unfortunate, since cooperation between the two sides to resolve a number of pressing global problems, from the wars in Ukraine and Syria to climate change, is urgently needed.

Intimate Distances is an art project created in two parts – 6 months and 20,000 km apart. As a creative research project, it was conceived as a way to physically and conceptually explore distance through the intimate gesture of touch. It sought to visually communicate the spatial, temporal and embodied experiences of being on opposite sides of the world through the humble process of frottage. Grand ideas were intended to be galvanised by even grander distances. However, as this article recounts, the 12-month project took unexpected turns, which were generated by a series of failures and finally resulted in an embracing of uncertainty. Rather than following the proposed script, my tacit knowledge led the project in unforeseen ways that were ultimately more productive than expected. Through this article, which itself is a form of enacting an ephemeral experience, I outline how Intimate Distances unfolded and how non-representational theory and performative research entwine in this creative project.
