In this Equity Research, we chose Lowe's Companies Inc because it is one of biggest Home Improvement Companies in the world and with positive impact in its country as it is associated with many solidarity events. We characterized Home Improvement retail as a market with many producers, similar products and dominated in USA by 2 companies: Lowe's and Home Depot. To valuate Lowe's, we took as reference date 30/09/2020 and computed some different valuation methods in order to get the best valuation possible. In Discounted Cash Flow through Free Cash Flow to Firm where we get a price of 142$ per share, meaning a downside potential when compared with reference date of 14.2% being this our main valuation method. With relative valuation, using EV/EBITDA and P/E of Home Depot as well as with total payout method we get a lower share price than what we have in our reference date, 166$. Main risks associated with Lowe's operations that we identified are brand reputation, difficulties in adapting to new challenges that may occur, volatility in foreign currencies and political decisions. Taking this downside potential in consideration as a medium risk associated with this company, we recommend a sell position to investors.

This research is proposed to reassemble the dissolution occurred when the Political Economy sought to limit their field of study, particularly in the perception of humann behavior and the assumption that men are inherently selfish. To do that, it is developed the perception of Adam Smith about human behavior, and the subsequent changes resulting from different conceptions of classical and the neoclassical authors. These changes emphasize the selfishness of the economic agent. In this attempt, is showed the way of the consolidating of self-interest premise, the mishaps and controversies of this path. It explores the the elements that collaborated in the transformation of Smithian man in homo economicus, such as decontextualized reading of Smith, individualism, utilitarianism, methodological individualism, positivism and the very necessity of theoretical abstraction. Additionally, it is observed that the confusion of concepts present in this methodological construction suggests that economics salutes the egoism. This is a result of the distinction between moral and economic aspects.

Resumo:
Background: Chronic Kidney Disease is a global health problem. In the United Kingdom, there is impetus for self-management of long term conditions. In 2002, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence’ technology appraisal guideline on haemodialysis suggested that 10%-15% of the centre’s dialysis population should undertake home haemodialysis. The clinical community is yet to rise to this challenge. In this study, we seek to explore patient-related clinical and psychosocial predictors and provider beliefs and attitudes which determine the choice of self-care dialysis, particularly, home haemodialysis. Design and methods: The design is a combined cross-sectional and longitudinal study employing an integrated mixed methodology (convergent, parallel design). Study participants include patients and multidisciplinary staff. The three patient cohorts (n = 535) include pre-dialysis (222), hospital (213) and self-care haemodialysis patients (100) from geographically distinct NHS sites, and with variable prevalence of home haemodialysis (low <3%; medium 5-8%; high >8%). The pre-dialysis patients were followed up for a period of 12 months from study entry. Quantitative data ascertained include biomarkers, clinical, psychosocial quantitative and neuropsychometric-cognitive tests in the study cohorts. Organizational attitudes and dialysis unit practices were gathered from a survey of the participating units. Semi-structured interviews were carried out for patients and care-providers. The datasets were analysed independently and the findings mixed at the stage of interpretation. Statistical tests appropriate to the specific questions were considered for the quantitative data and qualitative data was analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Home haemodialysis has a high composite (training+home) technique survival rate of 90.2%, 87.4% & 81.5% at 1, 2 and 5-years respectively in a death and transplantation censored analysis. The key predictors of self-care dialysis, especially home haemodialysis, are self-perceived higher cognitive ability (metaconcentration), lower comorbidity score, home ownership, and white ethnicity background. There are 20% lower odds of choosing self-care dialysis over fully-assisted dialysis for every unit reduction in metaconcentration score and this is significantly associated with trails making test B, an objective test of executive brain function. Perceived inability to self-cannulate was a significant predictor of the choice of peritoneal dialysis over home haemodialysis amongst CKD-5, predialysis patients. However, approximately 1 in 3 patients from the predialysis and hospital haemodialysis groups feel able to consider self-cannulation. The centre to which the patient belonged had an impact on the choice of dialysis modality, with greater proportion opting for home haemodialysis in a centre with greater home haemodialysis prevalence. Amongst predialysis patients who made a modality choice, the experience of their interaction with healthcare teams and dialysis counselling, self-efficacy, personal fulfilment through work and social engagements, and their views of the modality’s impact on their significant others, influenced the choice of home or hospital-based haemodialysis. 45% of all respondents in a survey of healthcare practitioners felt that staff knowledge and bias influenced the offer of home haemodialysis therapy. At a policy level, the tariff for home haemodialysis was not a clear incentive for its adoption due to uncertainty about operational costs. Conclusions: There exists a perception of lack of uniformity in practice pertaining to offer of home haemodialysis across the study centres. The impact of financial incentives designed at a policy level is influenced by the understanding of cost and benefits at the local operational level. Most barriers are surmountable and patients should be able to consider self-care therapies option in all but the most limiting physical and cognitive states. There is a need locally, for units to investigate barriers to home haemodialysis therapy using a conceptual framework in order to facilitate change.

Avis, Hannah. "Geographies of home : a study of women's socio-spatial narratives of home and self-identity". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/24764.

Resumo:
The aim of this thesis is to explore women's experiences and understandings of home. Two very different perspectives are evident in existing feminist literature on women and home. The first emphasises connections between home, the distinction between public and private, and the perpetuation of constraining gendered roles and expectations. The second emphasises the symbolic, emotional and personal expressivity of home spaces for women. This thesis seeks to examine the interface between these perspectives as it is played out in women's lives. I show how women make and re-make their self-identities partly through and in relation to home spaces. I explore the relationship between constructions of gender and of home through women's personal accounts of their home spaces. The accounts were collected through repeat, in-depth interviews with six women aged between twenty seven and thirty four, who own their homes, and who, at the start of the interviews, were living with partners and had no children. The interviews take the form of narratives in which the women tell of both the everyday nature of the homes in which they live, and their experiences - including memories and expectations - of home. Chapter Four, the first of three substantive chapters, examines the interweaving of homeownership and adulthood in stories of complex transitions. I suggest that the process of homeownership can usefully be understood as a 'rite of passage' which, while potentially creating spaces in which the women feel grown up, is problematically gendered. These problems are articulated through women's discussion of the difficulties they encounter in balancing their needs for privacy with ideas and expectations of intimacy and care. Chapter Five focuses on stories about mothers, mothering and mother-daughter relationships. Considering women's memories of their mothers in relation to their stories about their current homes, I highlight ways in which narratives of home are infused with construction of 'woman' as 'mother'. The dense interweaving of'woman', 'mother' and 'home' generates fusions and confusions that are manifest in socio-spatial limitations and frustrations the interviewees describe. In Chapter Six, I consider the idea of home as a space within which family relations are rooted, returned to and relived. Thrown into sharp relief by the loss of past home spaces, the transcripts suggest a sense of home as an emotional journey of relationships embedded within identifiable and accessible spaces. There is also a tension in these stories between a desire for continuity and the pressure of change. The thesis concludes by examining the metaphor of a web or collage in which the experiences of home and self are woven together, arguing that this is a useful way to represent and analyse the multiple and fractured strands of experience and expectation that make up women's relationship with home spaces.

This research is focused on enabling an opportunity for boarding students to create films about their identity, and what ‘home’ means to them. The study aims to understand whether using film making pedagogies allows these boarding students to communicate their stories and what affordances does the film learning have for the students. This research investigates four case studies which consist of boarding students from an independent Sydney girls’ school, engaging in a film making process. Because I am teacher-researcher, the process of creating these films of ‘home’ is explored through qualitative semi-structured interviews, ethnographic observation, and observation of film learning, using the artefacts of the students films themselves. The findings suggest that when students are involved in film learning, there is an increase in self-reflection on home and identity, and also students gain confidence in their self-expression. By investigating as a group, students were able to see home as constructed in physical, metaphysical or emotional ways. Digital modal approaches assisted in having the students’ stories emerge with their peers’ input. Students were also able to see connections with their fellow boarders and feel connected as a community. The students explored the tensions between their two worlds which assisted their understanding of self, and also themselves as filmmakers. They also experienced being ‘seen and heard’ by sharing their films with a wider audience. The findings/conclusion of this research study makes suggestions for future study in the areas of student expression, home and film pedagogy.

Resumo:
Objective: The objective of this integrative review was to synthesise evidence on perceived self-efficacy among patients receiving home dialysis. The review also aimed to identify measures utilised and interventions employed to assess and improve self-efficacy. Research problem: Home dialysis requires a multidimensional approach that is associated with adherence to dialysis regimes, fluid management, dietary restrictions and medications. Effective self-care strategies involve lifelong behavioural changes and adherence with treatment regimens that can create challenges and a sense of burden among patients, their families or caregivers. With a growing body of evidence linking improved health outcomes to high self-efficacy, it is imperative to understand self-reported levels of self-efficacy, the measurements used to assess self-efficacy and the effectiveness of interventions to enhance self-efficacy in this population. Inclusion criteria: This review considered research studies reporting on perceived self-efficacy, measures of self-efficacy, and interventions to enhance self-efficacy in patients on home dialysis. Studies that focused on self-efficacy of patients undergoing in-centre dialysis and pre-dialysis were excluded. Methods: An integrative review was employed using Whittemore and Knafl’s (2005) methodology. CINAHL, MEDLINE, Embase and Scopus databases were searched without a date limit for studies published in English. Fifteen studies met the inclusion criteria and were critically appraised by two independent reviewers using Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. Narrative synthesis of the findings was conducted because meta-analysis was not possible owing to the heterogeneity of the findings. Results: The included studies were predominantly quantitative studies (n = 10) examining training programs to promote self-efficacy and the report of levels of self-efficacy in patients on home dialysis. The majority of studies reported on peritoneal dialysis in the home setting (n = 649, 91.5%). Narrative synthesis led to the generation of two themes; gaining skills to develop self-efficacy; and building and maintaining knowledge. The findings highlight the importance of health professionals, families and peer support in developing self-efficacy. To advance research and Self-efficacy in patients undergoing home dialysis: An integrative review practice in this area, it is recommended to address the sociodemographic factors that influence self-efficacy and evaluate the long-term impact of interventions on self-efficacy.

The use of advanced medical technology at home has increased in most industrialized countries. The overall aim of this thesis was to develop knowledge of self-care and transition and issues that influence daily life and health among persons using advanced medical technology at home. Three qualitative studies were performed to describe the structure of self-care (I) and elucidate meanings of health-illness transition experiences among persons using long-term oxygen, or a ventila-tor, or performing blood or peritoneal dialysis (II), and to gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of living with an adult family member in this context (III). Ten interviews with adult patients (I-II) and ten with adult next of kin (III) in this context were performed and analysed with descriptive phenome-nological (I), phenomenological hermeneutical (II) and hermeneutical (III) methods. A quantitative, descriptive, comparative, cross-sectional design was used to describe and find factors that influence self-care agency and perceived health in a larger group of persons (180 patients) using the enumerated types of advanced medical technology at home (IV). In the results, (I) self-care among persons using long-term oxygen, a ventilator, or equipment for blood or peritoneal dialysis at home was described at a generic level, independent of the specific type of technology used. The general description of self-care in this context involved prerequisites for, activities for and consequences of self-care; (II) the health-illness transition among adult persons in this context was interpreted as contentment at being part of the active and conscious process towards transcending into a new state of living, in which the individual and the technology were in tune. The successful and healthy transition experience was characterized by human growth and becoming; (III) living with a family member who is using advanced medical technology at home was interpreted as meaning rhythmical patterns of being closely connected to but also separated from him or her, and of sorrow versus reconciliation. Dependence on others was reflected in a need for support from the healthcare professionals and significant others; (IV) health-related and technology-related variables in daily life were rated as satisfactory to quite a high extent, but participants using long-term oxygen perceived their health as significantly lower compared to the other technology groups. Further, a significant difference in sense of coherence was found between users of long-term oxygen and peri-toneal dialysis. Factors that contributed to self-care agency and sense of coherence were found. In conclusion, self-care in a high-tech home context means more than simply mastering the technology. With the goal of maintaining an active, social life, the health-illness transition involves a learning process of accepting and integrating the technology into daily life. With knowledge and support, patients and next of kin are able to assume substantial responsibility for self-care/dependent-care. Daily life seems to be manageable for patients using this kind of technology at home.

Abstract This study is focused on the self-care of home-dwelling elderly people living in Slovenia. The study has two phases. The purpose of the first phase is to describe the self-care of home-dwelling elderly people living in Slovenia and factors connected to self-care. The purpose of the second phase is to describe the experiences of the elderly people's ability to manage at home. The aim of this study was to produce new knowledge about the self-care of home-dwelling elderly people living in Slovenia and the factors connected with it. The knowledge will be used to develop elderly care and support eldery people who live at home. The knowledge can be also used to educate nurses to care for the elderly people. The study was both quantitative and qualitative. In the quantitative study the sample consisted of 302 home-dwelling elderly people who were clients in domiciliary care. The selection criteria was: aged 75 years or over and the ability to communicate, no hearing problems, no severe mental problem/cognitive disability and gave full consent for their participation. The whole instrument consists of 91 items. A instrument covers background data, types of self-care, self-care orientation, life satisfaction, self-esteem and functional ability. In the qualitative study, 20 interviews were carried out and a qualitative analysis obtained. Data collection methods included open-ended questions concerning the following topics: background data, types of self-care, self-care orientation, life satisfaction, self-esteem and functional ability. Based on factor analyses, four factors were found which described the self-care. All other factors describe elderly people's perceptions concerning either the past or the future. The elderly people who are able to manage their daily activities/routines have a good functional capacity, good family relations, live qualitatively, accept the future healthily and clearly and are satisfied with their life because they can take care of themselves, but their self-esteem is not so high. Those elderly people who do not take care of themselves are abandoned; they are not satisfied with their way of life and have low-esteem. The results are going to be the basis for planning care and nursing care for all caregivers, especially community nurses. On the basis of this result the model of nursing and social care for home - dwelling elderly people living in Slovenia could be planned
Tiivistelmä Tutkimuksessa selvitetään Sloveniassa asuvien ikääntyneiden itsestä huolenpitoa. Tutkimus on kaksivaiheinen. Ensimmäisen vaiheen tarkoituksena oli kuvata slovenialaisten ikääntyneiden itsestä huolenpitoa ja siihen yhteydessä olevia tekijöitä. Toisen vaiheen tarkoituksena oli kuvailla ikääntyneiden kokemuksia itsestä huolenpidosta. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tuottaa tietoa slovenialaisten ikääntyneiden kotona asuvien itsestä huolenpidosta. Tietoa voidaan käyttää tuettaessa ikääntyneitä asumaan kotona. Lisäksi sitä voidaan käyttää hoitotyöntekijöiden koulutuksessa. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin sekä määrällistä että laadullista lähestymistapaa. Määrällisen tutkimuksen otos oli 302 kotona asuvaa slovenialaista ikääntynyttä. Kriteerinä oli vähintään 75 vuoden ikä ja kommunikaatiokyky. Kyselylomake sisälsi 91 väittämää. Siinä oli taustatietokysymyksiä, itsestä huolenpitoon, itsestä huolenpitoon orientoitumiseen, elämään tyytyväisyyteen, itsearvostukseen ja toimintakykyyn liittyviä kysymyksiä. Laadulliseen tutkimukseen osallistui 20 henkilöä. He olivat antaneet suostumuksena haastatteluun tutkimukseen ensimmäisessä vaiheessa.

Pazera, Edyta. "Hidden stories : self-injury, hope, and narratives". Thesis, City University London, 2012. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/11785/.

Resumo:
The widespread perception of self-injury places an emphasis on the negative aspects of this behaviour. It is seen by many as a dangerous, self-destructive act, and psychopathology. However, there is a lesser-known view that constructs selfinjury as a hopeful behaviour, through which a person attempts to communicate his/her own emotional states. This research aims to explore how people who selfinjure construct hope in their narratives about self-injury in order to deepen the understanding of the self-injurious behaviour. As the researcher was interested in the individuals’ subjective experience, the qualitative method of inquiry was deemed to be most appropriate. Eight individuals took part in narrative interviews. The Narrative Analysis method was employed to analyse the data. This process revealed a new type of narrative, called a cyclical narrative. The results showed that the self-injury story is the cyclical narrative. Four main themes were identified within this narrative, namely ‘Experienced Chaos’, ‘Self-injury – The Way to Tell the Story, ‘Resolution of the Story – the Paradox of “I’m good”’, and ‘The Story Continues…’. These themes correspond to the stages in self-injury stories, which are experienced by the participants in cycles. The participants described experiencing chaos, despair and hopelessness, and then self-injuring in order to end the chaos and get to a point where they felt good/better. In this context, selfinjury is understood as a pathway of hope and the thoughts of the act of self-injury are identified as an agency thinking of hope. The goal of self-injury here is to get to the uncertain, yet highly desired, point of feeling better, and this also gives rise to the feeling of hope that life can carry on. However, these feelings did not last long and the whole cycle of chaos, despair, hopelessness, self-injury, and hope got repeated. The self-injury story does not have any real resolution or end. In this context, self-injury is seen as a way of telling a story about the chaos and underlying suffering. The experiences of chaos gave rise to feelings of hopelessness, and self-injury was presented as a way to end this state and as an attempt to restore hope in the narrators’ lives. These findings are discussed drawing on narrative theory. Furthermore, some limitations of this research and recommendations for future studies directions are offered. The implications of findings for clinical practice and research are also discussed.

Resumo:
This thesis is an exploratory study of contemporary British mantelpiece displays. Located within anthropological/sociological literatures of the meaning of home, identity and material culture, it opens up the 'focal point' of the domestic interior to scrutiny. This familiar 'homely' space is a strangely invisible presence within the house. Ethnographically-informed interviews reveal its role in the ordering and categorisation of domestic time, space and objects; also family and gender relations. By transforming this taken-for-granted space into matter out of place, ongoing practices of memory, family and home are interpreted as internalised cultural categorisations. The perspective of gift theory reveals frictions between traditional practice and current conflations of self and taste, home and family, in a mass of proliferating materials. Focusing on the mythopoetic gendering of the gift and the house, I show how the mantelpiece is a structuring structure in an order of artefacts including the house and displayed objects. There is a 'gap' in-between the tangible, visual and audible properties of mantelpiece displays which can show the immortal ordinary society of premodern mythopoesis and ordering of power relations. The syncresis of home, memory, family and women is past-oriented and exclusionary, compressing and disguising 'being' - domestication of the body - as 'knowing'. The study employs multi-modal collection methods, such as postal questionnaires, in- depth qualitative interviews, visual data including a longitudinal autophotographic project, Mass-Observation Archive material and architectural histories. Data are analysed from differing perspectives, including narrative/biographic accounts, emergent themes, innovative visual interpretation and historiography/archaeology. Presentation of findings addresses the 'crisis of representation' by using text, photographs and sketches in a bound thesis, a CD-Rom and a website. Using sociological imagination thus problematises everyday processes of 'doing' both social membership and social enquiry. In conclusion, I suggest future multi-dimensional enquiry into the 'gaps' in social/architectural fabric.

This thesis addresses the oft-neglected experiences of ‘homeless’ women. It explores how homelessness impacts on women’s identities and how this is negotiated and/or resisted. An integrated theoretical framework links homelessness and identity literature with feminist insights surrounding marginalised women. By centring the experiences and identity-work of homeless women, this thesis contributes to bodies of work on homelessness, women and identity from a feminist perspective. The study advances knowledge of home and homelessness and the relationship between these supposedly binary concepts; and contributes to existing understandings of identity, in relation to marginalised women. Findings are based on a combination of in-depth qualitative interviews, participant-produced photographs, and follow-up photo-elicitation interviews with twelve women accessing homelessness support services – hostels, supported housing projects, day-centres, and women’s centres –in a range of homelessness situations. This research produced four significant findings. First, home and homelessness were experienced in broader senses than previously found. As home existed in a variety of states, women experienced homelessness in a myriad of ways: homelessness was thus expanded beyond the point of entry into homelessness services. Second, homelessness was felt as a comparative lack. Rather than feeling stigmatised because of their homelessness in and of itself, homelessness affected the women in that they saw housing as a measuring stick and came out lacking. Third, homelessness presented an opportunity for re-creation of self because of the challenges it raised. While previous literature states that the current homeless self is profaned, this study found women to praise the current self as reformed and wiser despite constraining social factors. Finally, this thesis emphasises the malleability of identity categories and argues that marginalisation is not an outright barrier to reflexivity and creativity. Homeless women performed other identities beyond their homelessness, and housing/home experiences are not fixed determinants of identity and self.

The purpose of this study is to test a theory-based intervention program to reverse excess disability of nursing homes elders in Taiwan. The program called the Self-Care Self-Efficacy Enhancement Program (SCSEEP) was derived from Social Cognitive Theory and Theory of Conformity with Nature. The program was tested by an experimental, two-group, pre-post design with forty-two qualified subjects, recruited from the two nursing homes located in the southern Taiwan. The subjects were randomly assigned to one of the two groups: the experimental group (n = 21) and the comparison group (n = 21). Subjects in the experimental group, who were aged from 73.8 to 94.7, received the SCSEEP. Subjects in the comparison group, who were aged from 71.2 to 95.6, received six-week social visits. Statistical data analysis showed that the following pair-variables were positively correlated: 1) life satisfaction and self-esteem, 2) life satisfaction and motivation, 3) self-esteem and motivation in health behavior, 4) self-esteem and levels of BADL performance, and 5) motivation in health behavior and levels of BADL performance. It also was found that elders receiving the SCSEEP significantly improved in most self-care abilities, after controlling for baseline BADL performance. However, the SCSEEP did not significantly affect elders' life satisfaction, self-esteem, and motivation in health behavior. This study provides a theory-based caring model for Chinese nursing home elders in improving their BADL performance if SCSEEP is provided.

Resumo:
This thesis presents arguments for better understanding and subsequent better treatment of children, particularly in relation to their education. Autonomous education is seen as more providential in attaining greater freedom and self-determination in children than systems of education which favour authoritarian policies. It is, however, conceded that there can be no 'one right way' approach when educating children as individuals. Divisibility of intelligence is discussed with reference to Paul Hirst, Howard Gardner and R. F. Dearden. Autonomous education is seen to be 'at home' in home-based education, and autonomous education within a democratic setting sets the scene for children's enfranchisement. A post-modernist technological revolution foreshadows cultural changes which may augur notions of education policies which embody voluntary rather than compulsory elements. The Compulsory Education Act is, therefore, assessed in relation to justice. To support the argument for greater freedom and self-determination, children's competences and capabilities are evaluated within the four main areas of rationality, responsibility, moral and emotional development and experience. A 'Personal-Territory Thesis' is the corner-stone of arguments which support a belief that knowledge and morality are founded on a rational basis which is common to both children and adults. Moral and emotional developments are assessed in relation to maturity in general. Dependence and autonomy are factors which present conflicting issues. Kant's moral theory features strongly throughout the thesis with much reference to Onora O'Neill's interpretation.

Resumo:
The purpose of this study was to develop and test an instrument, the Hope Indicator Questionnaire (HIQ), which was designed to measure the latent variable of hope; and to identify antecedent variables which impact upon hope. A nonexperimental study with four-week test-retest was designed to examine the psychometric properties of the HIQ. Reliability of the HIQ was tested by 4-week stability. Internal consistency reliability was also performed on the HIQA. Validity of the HIQ was examined by content validity, exploratory factor analysis, convergence, and predictive causal model testing. Data were collected and analyzed from 111 subjects who did not have life threatening health problems during their study participation. Sixty (54%) were female, 83 (75%) were religious believers. The majority (66%) were Caucasian. The age ranged from 18 to 79, with the mean age of 38.95 (S.D. = 16.12). Results showed that low stabilities were found in the HIQP and HIQB (.52 and .45). Stability coefficient and internal consistency for the HIQA were .71 and .92. Satisfactory content validity of the HIQA was demonstrated by a three-member panel. The exploratory factor analysis confirmed that a latent factor was extracted from the three scales in the HIQ. Convergent validity was established by satisfactory correlations with the Herth Hope Scale (HHS) (.58) and Beck's Hopelessness Scale (HS) (-.42). The proposed predictive model was partially supported by the study when perceived functional support was measured by a modified Shang's Perceived Functional Support measure. Antecedents for both HIQ and HHS hope were explored. Personal control and perceived functional support were direct antecedents for HIQ hope while HHS hope was directly affected by personal control and chance control. Other variables (i.e. support network, religion and demographics) were indirect antecedents to HIQ and HHS hope through those direct antecedents. Additional analysis was accomplished on comparisons of the HIQ and HHS, and a qualitative content analysis was done on the first five hopes identified by the subjects. In conclusion, the HIQ had low reliability. Possible resources contributing to this low reliability were discussed. Results related to the HIQ measure should be interpreted with caution although the convergence of the HIQ with the HHS and HS was supported.

Resumo:
My thesis — a novel and an accompanying exegesis — addresses the question: what is ‘home’? What are the ways in which it has been and can be understood? And in particular, how can it be represented in narrative fiction so as to take into account its many intricate facets? Framed by my understanding of the relationship between mental inscapes and outward landscapes, I propose that ‘home’ is not so much a geographical space as it is an interpretation of that space, and that, in prose, this interpretation is based on the subjective viewpoint of a narrative focaliser. This said, in my creative practice I explore experiences of ‘home’ through two alternate focalisations. I represent ‘home’ in several ways: as the tension point between nurture and neglect; as a space of transience and fluidity; as an experience of familiarity; and as part of the everyday process of the creation of self. Drawing upon the landscape, culture and community of the places I have lived in — Bunbury, Albany and Perth — and the years I have spent traversing the roads within and between, this is a novel in which the sense of home (or the homelike moment) is constructed out of movement, communication and sociality. This is a novel in which ‘home’ is not just a place; it is an activity.Relative to my creative practice, my exegesis details how the construction of my novel was based on a triangulate relationship between personal experience, theoretical readings and the exemplar of fiction. Each chapter examines ‘home’ from a certain theoretical point of view, and in turn the representational applications of these points of view are studied via a close reading of Thea Astley’s A Descant for Gossips and in my own work. Finally, it is this understanding — point of view, perception, focalisation — that forms the basis of both my creative and theoretical work.

The purpose of this study was to investigate cooking beliefs and practices in relation to diet quality among young adults. Using an online survey, this study assessed university students’ attitudes towards cooking, frequency of preparing homemade meals, and confidence in cooking as they correlate with fruit and vegetable consumption. The parent-child dyad was also assessed to determine if people’s cooking attitudes, confidence, and frequency relate to their parents’ cooking frequency.

The participant sample consisted of 448 California State University Long Beach students. Subjects ranged in age from 18 to 28 years; 67.9% were females. Most participants (86%) reported access to a kitchen at their residence. Results showed a significant positive correlation between cooking attitudes, cooking frequency, and cooking confidence and fruit and vegetable intake ( p < .05). A significant positive correlation was also found between cooking attitudes and subjects’ parents’ cooking frequency during subject rearing (p < .05).

Resumo:
The negative effects of cognitive decline and impairment can be devastating for older adults and their families, and extremely costly for the healthcare system and the society. Cognitive training aims to maintain or improve cognition by utilizing repetitive tasks that target specific cognitive skills. The majority of cognitive training studies in healthy older adults involved home-based, individual, computerized approach or onsite, group, paper-and-pencil format. These approaches may not be suitable for individuals with serious health or mobility issues, caregiving responsibilities, limited transportation, or limited computer or internet access. A novel, home-based, self-administered cognitive training intervention was developed to address these barriers. It involves two older adults taking turns to administer paper-and-pencil tasks to one another. The purpose of the study was to evaluate feasibility and participant acceptability of this novel approach to cognitive training. Eighteen participants (9 dyads) 65-91 years (M = 75.94, SD = 7.66) underwent assessment and began intervention. Assessment included measures of cognitive skills and self-reported quality of life, health status, and daily functioning. Four dyads were married couples who had sessions at home. Other dyads met at various public locations and included friends, neighbors, or unfamiliar older adults connected by the researcher. Fourteen participants (7 dyads) completed cognitive training intervention that included 9-24 sessions (M = 15.14, SD = 5.30) over 4-21 weeks (M = 12.21, SD = 5.44), post-intervention assessment, and detailed interviews. Quantitative data demonstrated that the sample did not decline on any cognitive measures and exhibited improvement on visuospatial skills and delayed visual memory (Cohen’s d = .67 & -1.10). Additional analyses revealed that the results were mainly attributable to improvement in females (Cohen’s d = -1.84 & -1.35), who demonstrated weaknesses in these cognitive skills at baseline. The participants reported that the dyadic approach was flexible, convenient, and enjoyable. They also provided valuable feedback and suggestions for modifying the content and other aspects of the intervention. The findings suggest that dyadic cognitive training is feasible and well-received by older adults. Those with weaknesses in cognitive domains may show larger gains in respective domains and benefit most from cognitive training.

Resumo:
This study investigated the relationship among maternal reactions to visual impairment, home environment, and the self-esteem of eight visually impaired children. Educational research has clearly isolated a correlation between self-esteem, academic performance, and behavior. The premise of this study was that visually impaired children who perceived their home environments as supportive and nurturing; and who had parents, particularly mothers who accepted their loss of vision, would feel better about themselves more so than visually impaired children who held predominantly negative perceptions. The study also compared children's, mothers' and teachers' perceptions of the child's self-esteem. The subjects were 8 visually impaired children between the ages of 5 and 8, their mothers, and their integrating teachers. A questionnaire pertaining to children's self-esteem was circulated to teachers and mothers. Children were interviewed separately. Results indicated that the climate of the home was associated with both the use of functional vision and self-esteem in visually impaired children. The findings are congruent with educational and humanistic-phenomenological theory, and support the hypothesis that children's behavior and perceptions of themselves are influenced by the reflections of 'significant others', particularly their parents.

The study examined relations between a cross-cultural geographically mobile childhood and adult cultural identity, attachment to cross-cultural identities (CCIs) and self-esteem. CCIs are loosely defined identities (e.g., third culture kids [TCKs], military brats, missionary kids) that describe some individuals' childhood cross-cultural experience. The 475 participants spent at least two years before age 18 in a culture different from their parents' and completed an online survey including childhood cross-cultural experiences, Cultural Homelessness Criteria, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, and Self Label Identity Measure (SLIM) that captured strength of affirmation, belonging and commitment to any CCI. Cultural homelessness (CH) was related to lower self-esteem; higher SLIM scores was related to higher self-esteem and lower CH. TCKs reported lower self-esteem than non-TCKs and older participants experienced less CH and higher self-esteem. SLIM scores buffered the CH-self-esteem relationship, whereas a TCK CCI and having more cross-culturally experienced social networks did not.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a debilitating chronic illness that can prevent older adults from accomplishing their activities of daily living or ambulate without pain. The project's purpose was to develop and disseminate multidisciplinary educational practice guidelines to nurses for use in older homebound male Veteran's Administration OA patients to improve home-based pain management and self-care preventative strategies. Orem's theory of self-care management constituted the theoretical framework. The design was a quality improvement project and involved formation of 6 panels of interdisciplinary teams who reviewed the American Society of Anesthesiologist (ASA) and Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) guidelines. The ASA and OARSI guideline components were evaluated via a scoring sheet for pain control and self-management effectiveness for the OA patient. The panels assessed these treatment plans in terms of suitability, tolerance, and patient adherence for inclusion into the educational program. The panel members independently reviewed both sets of guidelines and then convened as a group to share their scores and reach a consensus on these guidelines, in the patient population served. Agreement of 85% among the panel members was needed for inclusion into the practice guideline. Based on the scoring results the panel concluded that the ASA and OARSI guidelines would likely improve pain control, functional ability, and psychological well-being essential to lifestyle modifications and OA symptoms management education program. The social impact of developing nursing practice guidelines for the self-management of OA pain in home-based settings will be manifested in better patient lifestyle and behavior modification leading to better symptom management.

Along many dimensions, homeschooling is increasing, diversifying, and spreading globally. Yet little is known about the motivational climates and teaching strategies parents have adopted to promote academic achievement and motivation within their homes. Working within a self-determination theory (SDT) framework, this study used cluster analysis to examine the naturally-occurring types of learning environments created by 457 homeschool parents. Measures of support for autonomy, mastery goal orientation, and conditional regard were adapted for a homeschool context and used as constituting variables. Follow-up measures of need satisfaction, efficacy, student academic engagement, teaching practices and demographics were used to identify significant differences among groups. A five cluster solution best fit the data: a high need support group, low need support group and three groups of mixed need support. In general, the high need and mixed need support groups were associated with higher student engagement, need satisfaction, efficacy for homeschooling and frequent use of teaching strategies that promote autonomous motivation and support for student competence. The low need support group was significantly associated with lower need satisfaction and teaching strategies associated with control. Higher levels of academic engagement were reported for those students homeschooled longer and at higher grade levels. Male teaching parents (n = 29) reported significantly less need satisfaction and were significantly associated with the low need support group. Taken together, the findings extend self-determination theory to an important, emerging learning context. Results were consistent with findings in SDT research across other domains; thus, lending support to the universality of SDT's main tenets.

Within the prefabrication industry, Kit homes have had a long history of success within the twentieth century. Kit homes are houses whose components are manufactured using a panelized or pre-cut prefabrication system, are numbered, packaged and shipped to the building site for erection. Among the different strategies in purchasing a manufactured house, buying a house as a kit has a great potential for self-help assembly. Since about one third of the cost of construction is labor costs, the author has investigated the option of self-help building using Kit homes, to eliminate the labor cost and thus further reduce the construction cost.
In order to study the Kit home potential and costs when bought from, and assembled by the manufacturer, four manufacturers of prefabricated homes who offer Kit homes were visited. In order to study the Kit home potential and costs when assembled by the buyer, the building process of a self-helper was researched and documented. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

This descriptive case study investigated the effects of widespread availability of information technology in a fifth grade classroom using a constructivist paradigm. The same computer configuration that students used in the classroom was provided for them at home, along with an Internet dial-up connection. The technology was used as an adjunct to the classroom and was utilized when appropriate. In addition to general classroom observations, four students were chosen for closer study. Their progress was monitored throughout the year with respect to three emerging themes related to information technology use: self-directed learning, collaboration, and social interaction. The results of this study were organized into individual student stories with each theme explored. The results showed that the students used the available technology both in the classroom and at home. There was a natural fit between the requirements of the fifth grade class and the available tools. Students chose to utilize the available technology and derived new ways of doing so, particularly at home where they were totally self-directed. For the students in this study, learning became a two-way process. Skills students developed on their own were shared with their teachers and other classmates.
