In today’s era, the connection between science of technology and all aspects of social life is increasingly in-depth. Multimedia technology, particularly in the sphere of education and teaching, demonstrates its tremendous advantages, such as vast teaching resources and the ability to move between various teaching modalities at any moment. To a large extent, all of these have aided the successful execution of China’s education reform. Teachers and students were continually adjusting to the dispersion of conventional roles, resulting in an increase in instructional efficacy. How to improve the significance of multimedia in middle school curriculum development and achieve our academic objectives of "fostering individuals" has now become a contentious issue among academicians. Aiming at the current situation of the development of middle school education management in China, this paper adopts the method of combining questionnaire survey with comparative experiment, proving the advanced nature of multimedia teaching mode. Meanwhile, with the help of questionnaire analysis, the author also understands some middle school students’ real ideas about the application of multimedia technology to the classroom. The experimental results show that multimedia technology is very effective in middle school education management. The classroom quality has been effectively improved, and the enthusiasm of students in class has been improved by about 20%. Furthermore, such an improvement was obtained in only one month of testing, which is quite encouraging. Finally, the researcher provides a thorough review of the research, arguing that using multimedia technology should not only enhance the material’s effectiveness, but also prevent overwhelming the viewers.

In stressing the need to embrace the use of technology in American Schools, Doyle states that educators “can't afford not to use technology” [1]; he goes on to say that the effective use of technology “will transform not just what a school accomplishes, but how it does so.” Despite being the focus of a great deal of attention, such visions are slow to materialize. So how can a school go about achieving an emphasis on technology? One strategy is for the school principals to lead by example. The use of microcomputers for student information management provides such an opportunity. After reviewing the process for selecting the most appropriate software, this article presents the experiences of the first ten Edmonton Public high schools to implement microcomputer based student information management.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the significant challenges school administrators encountered leading a one-to-one laptop school and what vision school administrators have for one-to-one laptop use in the classroom. Design/methodology/approach The methodology for this study was a case study approach. In total, 15 school administrators were interviewed from the Western region of the USA. Findings Results from the study indicated that significant challenges for school administrators were budgeting and sustaining the initiative, and negotiating and setting expectations for instructional use with teachers. School administrators also envisioned one-to-one laptop use as a mean to enhance student-centered learning and inquiry. Research limitations/implications Further research is needed which examines how school administrators make financial decisions in regards to sustaining one-on-one laptop initiatives and how they manage conflict with teachers in respect to one-to-one laptop instruction. Originality/value Minimal literature exists which examines the challenges and vision of school technology leaders. Policy-makers and school administrators can use the findings to recreate teacher evaluation forms, develop conflict management strategies and teaching standards that are aligned and conducive to one-to-one laptop schools.

This thesis documents and evaluates two associated topics of action research in the form of case studies in school technology. Its emphasis is on the role of strategic planning in the management of innovation within this increasingly important area of the English school curriculum. The research was carried out during a period in which British industrial innovation, and its effective management, was seen to be crucial to the nation's economic well being in the face of international competition. Growing acceptance of the importance of technology in general schooling, evidenced by its inclusion in the national curriculum embodied in the 1988 Education Reform Act, is set against the interlinked cultural, epistemological and professional barriers to its acceptance as high status activity within schools. It is argued that considerable energy expenditure is required before the intentions of the Reform Act become reality, and that innovation will need to be effectively managed. The study is therefore set against a review of the literature of innovation management in three spheres: curriculum development; the diffusion of Innovations; and industrial management. The first case study examines the implementation of an innovatory interpretation of the school subject Craft, Design and Technology (CDT) within the City of Manchester Education Authority. It tests the feasibility of developing a 'concept base' approach to CDT by teachers collaborating and being supported by the authority's inspector for CDT. It concludes that the innovation in a simple form is feasible, given that certain conditions and levels of resourcing can be met, but that in a more elaborate form, the innovation is severely problematic. The turbulence and rapid change being experienced within schools in the late nineteen eighties increases the severity of these problems. The second case study describes a project carried out in the North West of England in which various local education authorities and institutions of higher education collaborated to reduce perceived severe qualitative and quantitative shortages of CDT teachers. Five project aims were tested within the research and it is concluded that under certain conditions they are achievable, but that collaboration between institutions with different goals and customs is difficult, and that the quality of management information available to CDT staffing decision makers in the region W4S insufficiently accurate or sophisticated for effective innovation to proceed. In conclusion, certain generalisations are made relating to the effective management of innovation in school technology. These include: the inevitability of transactional distortion of objectives in the journey from intention-to outcome; the need to formulate and understand objectives and defend them from this drift, albeit in flexible ways; the need for incentives and central control in such collaborative endeavours; and finally the need for simple and effective communications within innovations.

Bluetooth is the codename adopted by a consortium of wireless equipment manufacturers that is working toward a low-cost, global standard for wireless communication of data and voice. It will operate in the unlicensed ISM band (industrial, scientific, and medical) with gross transfer rate up to lMbps and it will connect devices within a range of 10 or up to lOOm. The benefits of Bluetooth technology are twofold. First, it enables a user to replace the various cables between devices with a universal short-range radio link. For example, a cellular telephone and a portable computer equipped with the Bluetooth technology can interface without the need for cables. Further, they could interoperate with similarly equipped devices such as printers, fax machines, desktop computers and peripherals, and a host of other digital devices. The second major benefit of the Bluetooth technology is its ability to provide a connection between the ad hoc network and existing data networks. Bluetooth technology is designed for wireless personal area networks (WPANs), which are networks of personal electronic devices in close proximity to each other. Expectations for Bluetooth technology are that it will become a major player in the wireless data communications market, due primarily to its simplicity and its support from large companies, many of whom are integrating the technology into their products. Further, Bluetooth members are encouraging vendors to incorporate the technology into their products by waiving intellectual property royalty fees. That being said, this paper will explore the technical aspects of Bluetooth as well as the strategic rationale behind the founding companies. Since e-commerce might be heavily affected by this technology, especially business-to-consumer and consumer-to-consumer, this paper also explores the impact and possible changes in consumer and merchant behaviors.

Web 2.0, the ultimate platform for tacit based knowledge work has finally arrived. User driven, collaborative platform based tools including wikis, web mash-ups, discussion boards, linkage based search engines, and tagging have the potential to vastly change how information is managed and how knowledge work is captured. This thesis investigates how the new paradigms and tools of Web 2.0 can be applied to the Pharmaceutical Industry and assist with information management at The Novartis Institute for BioMedical Research (NIBR). Applying Web 2.0 tools to NIBR's chemical compounds, targets, assays, people, and projects in a well thought out framework has the potential to yield tremendous productivity improvements in the drug discovery process. Effectively harnessing the collective intelligence of thousands of scientists within Novartis's worldwide research network will enable a paradigm shift. A large, extremely knowledgeable user community can more effectively annotate metadata, hyperlink to important content, establish tags, and collectively author content. Such activities will not only improve the search ability of information but also allow important scientific connections to emerge linking biology to chemistry and furthering Novartis's understanding of disease.

This thesis analyzes how the fashion industry has begun to leverage technology to increase branding, improve products, drive sales and experiment with new business models. Overall, the fashion industry has been slow to embrace technology, but in the past ten years that pattern has changed. Fashion/tech startups emerge daily, undercutting monopolies and influencing the way people shop and connect to brands. Meanwhile, established retailers are in search of ways to connect to the digital customer and looking for new, innovative partnerships. However, both startups and established companies have had mixed results in incorporating technology. After examining what tactics has been successful and what paths has failed, the recommendation for retail executives is to use technology to facilitate customer needs vs. attempt to create them. When there is a consumer-based "pull" effect, the resulting fashion product tends to resonate with shoppers. However, when brands or entrepreneurs attempt to inject or "push" technology into fashion simply because the capability is there now, the product fails to gain early traction.

Schools routinely face federal and state mandated changes, like the Common Core State Standards or standardized testing requirements. Sometimes districts and schools want to take on new policies and practices of their own, like anti-bullying programs or using technology to deliver instruction. Regardless of the origin of the change, implementation requires them to take on additional work; yet experts estimate that only 30 to 50 percent of major change efforts in organizations will succeed. Failing change efforts result in not only financial losses but also lowered organizational morale, wasted resources, and lost opportunities. For schools where resources are already stretched thin, the consequences of failed change initiatives can be particularly devastating. In this paper, we discuss results of a study, over a school year, of school principals who were working on implementing a new change initiative in their schools. We apply lessons from the change management literature and focus on the importance of assessing readiness for change as a key step in ensuring the success of new initiatives. We share examples of a change readiness rubric to help schools and districts successfully lead change.

This report aims to identify relative strengths and weaknesses in Education Management Information Systems (EMIS) across the Caribbean region, as well as recommendations for improvement, by collating findings from analysis of EMIS implementation in three countries -Barbados (2022), Jamaica (2019), and Suriname (2019-20)- and a description of the Guyana EMIS. The analysis highlights three strengths across the countries analyzed: (i) use of annual school census as a data capturing tool; (ii) use of data and digital content for the management of students, learning, and teaching; and (iii) the availability of technological infrastructure in place to run the EMIS. It identifies challenges in: governance in terms of EMIS policy and design; various aspects of the collection, processing, storage, management, analysis and use of data; and access to the required physical infrastructure, equipment, technology, and internet connectivity. The document points to the need for an EMIS policy linked to ICT and education policies and to national objectives, a change management strategy, ongoing capacity building, and a closer collaboration between countries and with regional bodies, such as the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC).

Chien, Stanley, Lauren Christopher, Yaobin Chen, Mei Qiu e Wei Lin. Integration of Lane-Specific Traffic Data Generated from Real-Time CCTV Videos into INDOT's Traffic Management System. Purdue University, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317400.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) uses about 600 digital cameras along populated Indiana highways in order to monitor highway traffic conditions. The videos from these cameras are currently observed by human operators looking for traffic conditions and incidents. However, it is time-consuming for the operators to scan through all video data from all the cameras in real-time. The main objective of this research was to develop an automatic and real-time system and implement the system at INDOT to monitor traffic conditions and detect incidents automatically. The Transportation and Autonomous Systems Institute (TASI) of the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and the INDOT Traffic Management Center have worked together to research and develop a system that monitors the traffic conditions based on the INDOT CCTV video feeds. The proposed system performs traffic flow estimation, incident detection, and the classification of vehicles involved in an incident. The goal was to develop a system and prepare for future implementation. The research team designed the new system, including the hardware and software components, the currently existing INDOT CCTV system, the database structure for traffic data extracted from the videos, and a user-friendly web-based server for identifying individual lanes on the highway and showing vehicle flowrates of each lane automatically. The preliminary prototype of some system components was implemented in the 2018–2019 JTRP projects, which provided the feasibility and structure of the automatic traffic status extraction from the video feeds. The 2019–2021 JTRP project focused on developing and improving many features’ functionality and computation speed to make the program run in real-time. The specific work in this 2021–2022 JTRP project is to improve the system further and implement it on INDOT’s premises. The system has the following features: vehicle-detection, road boundary detection, lane detection, vehicle count and flowrate detection, traffic condition detection, database development, web-based graphical user interface (GUI), and a hardware specification study. The research team has installed the system on one computer in INDOT for daily road traffic monitoring operations.

This paper uses new data to study school management and productivity in India. We report four main results. First, management quality in public schools is low, and ~2σ below high-income countries with comparable data. Second, private schools have higher management quality, driven by much stronger people management. Third, people management quality is correlated with both independent measures of teaching practice, as well as school productivity measured by student value added. Fourth, private school teacher pay is positively correlated with teacher effectiveness, and better managed private schools are more likely to retain more effective teachers. Neither pattern is seen in public schools.
