We prove a quadratic interaction estimate for approximate solutions to scalar conservation laws obtained by the wavefront tracking approximation or the Glimm scheme. This quadratic estimate has been used in the literature to prove the convergence rate of the Glimm scheme. The proof is based on the introduction of a quadratic functional 𝔔(t), decreasing at every interaction, and such that its total variation in time is bounded. Differently from other interaction potentials present in the literature, the form of this functional is the natural extension of the original Glimm functional, and coincides with it in the genuinely nonlinear case.

For systems of hyperbolic conservation laws, a new Glimm functional was recently constructed when the linearly degenerate manifold in each characteristic field is either the whole space or it consists of a finitely many smooth and transversal manifolds of codimension one. This new functional leads to the neat consistency and convergence rate estimation of the Glimm scheme. In this paper, by the motivation of the result in Ref. 2, we show that the corresponding new Glimm functional can be constructed for general systems only under the strict hyperbolicity assumption.

In this paper, we investigate the initial-boundary value problem of compressible Euler equations including friction and heating that model the transonic Fanno–Rayleigh flows through symmetric variable area nozzles. In particular, the case of contracting nozzles is considered. A new version of a generalized Glimm scheme (GGS) is presented for establishing the global existence of entropy solutions with bounded variation. Modified Riemann and boundary Riemann solutions are applied to design this GGS, which is constructed using the contraction matrices acting on the homogeneous Riemann (or boundary-Riemann) solutions. The extended Glimm–Goodman’s type of wave interaction estimates are investigated to determine the stability of the scheme and the positivity of gas velocity that results in the existence of the weak solution. The limit of approximation solutions serves as an entropy solution. Moreover, a quantitative relation between the shape of the nozzle, friction, and heat is proposed for the global existence result in the contracting nozzle. Numerical simulations of the contraction-expansion and expansion-contraction nozzles are presented to validate the scheme.

An effective technique to increase production in an oil field is to inject a mixture of water and polymer. The viscosity of polymer reduces the mobility of water, which then pushes oil better, resulting in a higher extraction rate. The numerical simulation of such an enhanced oil recovery is therefore of paramount importance. However, despite decades of research, the modeling of polymer flows in porous media and its numerical resolution remains a difficult subject. On the one hand, the models traditionally used by reservoir engineers exhibit, in the best case, resonance-like singularities that make them weakly hyperbolic. Thisdefect gives rise to some complications but remains acceptable. In the worst case, when we wish to incorporate the effect of the inaccessible pore volume (IPV), themodels become non-hyperbolic, which exacerbates the numerical instabilities that are likely to appear. On the other hand, classical numerical schemes do not yield satisfactory results. Without IPV, the excessive diffusion around the contact wave causes the most relevant information to be lost. With IPV, the existence of complex eigenvalues generates exponential instabilities at the continuous level that must be addressed at the discrete level to avoid a premature stop of the code. The objective of this thesis is to remedy these difficulties. Regarding models, we analyze several IPV laws and show an equivalence between two of them. Furthermore, we propose reasonable sufficient conditions on the IPV law to enforce weak hyperbolicity of the flow system. Regarding schemes for the problem without IPV, we advocate a correction to improve the accuracy of contact discontinuities. For the problem with IPV, we design a relaxation method that guarantees the stability of the calculations for all IPV laws

Abstract Statistical modelling is an iterative process. We have a research question of interest, the experimental or observational context, the sampling scheme and the data. Based on these data and the other information, we develop an initial model, fit it to the data and examine the model output. We then plot the residuals, check the model assumptions and examine the parameter estimates. Based on this model output, we may modify the first model possibly through some transformation or the addition or subtraction of model terms. Fitting the second model may in turn lead to further models for the data, with the form of the current model being based on the information provided by the previous models. This interactivitybetween the data and the data modeller is a crucial feature of the process of statistical modelling. While automatic model selection procedures provided in many software packages can provide guidance in large problems, we take a different route in this book.

Abstract This chapter of the Modelling Guide is intended to give a set of more or less complete analyses covering a range of practical problems for which GLIM is useful. The examples are also intended to convey how the various facilities of GLIM, especially the high-resolution graphics, may be used with practical problems, and to provide a useful reference for users with similar problems. The examples given here are designed to cover the most common problems that arise for which univariate modelling is appropriate. They are grouped, mainly, according to the type of response variable of which the main types of interest are continuous (measured), dichotomous (two categories), and counted (frequencies). However there is some overlap so it was not possible to keep rigidly to this scheme.
