With the rise and improvement of artificial intelligence technology, the express delivery industry has become more intelligent. At the terminal of modern logistics, each dispatch center has hundreds of express mail deliveries to be dispatched every day, and the number of dispatchers is far less than the number of express mail deliveries. How to assign scientific tasks to each courier dispatch is the main target of this paper. The purpose is to make the number of tasks between the various couriers in the express center roughly the same in each cycle, so that there is a more balanced income between the couriers. In the simulation experiment, the delivery addresses are clustered according to the balanced k-means algorithm. Then, the ant colony algorithm is used to plan the delivery order of the express items in each class. Then, the time cost model is established according to the delivery distance of the express items in each class and the delivery mode of the express items to calculate the delivery time cost. Through a large amount of experimental data, the standard deviation of delivery time cost of each courier gradually decreases and tends to stabilize, which suggests that this method has a good effect on the dispatching task assignment of the express center. It can effectively make the delivery workload between the distributors roughly the same, and improve the delivery efficiency of the courier, save energy, and promote sustainable development.

As a result of concerns around declining memberships and the growth of precarious employment in recent years, unions have sought to expand their jurisdictions and organize groups of workers who have typically resisted collective bargaining. Research on union renewal has examined working conditions and workplace structures that may give rise to successful organizing campaigns. In this paper we examine working conditions amongst non-unionized same-day messengers working in Toronto, Canada. The research team conducted 143 semi-structured interviews with bikers, drivers and walkers who work primarily for local courier companies. We find that although same-day couriers are typically treated as ‘independent contractors’, they are dependent on brokers, and precariously employed, with unpredictable income and hours of work. Though this group would benefit substantially from unionization, especially organized on a sector-wide basis, their attitudes and culture combined with the structure of the local industry create substantial impediments to organizing.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present the design and evaluation of an integrated system that supports planners and dispatchers to deliver enhanced courier operations. In addition to regular deliveries and pickups, these operations include: first, mass deliveries to be served over a horizon of multiple days; and second, real-time dynamic requests (DRs) to be served within the same service period. Design/methodology/approach – To address the aforementioned challenges, the authors developed an architecture that enhances a typical fleet management system by integrating purpose designed methods. Specifically, the authors plan mass deliveries taking into account typical routes of everyday operations. For planning DRs in real time, the authors propose an efficient insertion heuristic. Findings – The results from testing the proposed optimization algorithms for planning mass deliveries and real-time DRs are encouraging, since the proposed algorithms outperform current practices. Testing in a practical courier environment, indicated that the enhanced planning system may improve significantly operational performance. Research limitations/implications – The proposed optimization algorithm for the dynamic aspect of this problem comprises a heuristic approach that reaches suboptimal solutions of high quality. The development of fast optimal algorithms for solving these very interesting and practical problems is a promising area for further research. Practical implications – The proposed integrated system addresses significant problems of hybrid courier operations in an integrated, balanced manner. The tests showed that the allocation of flexible orders within a three-day time horizon improved the cost per flexible order by 7.4 percent, while computerized routing improved the cost of initial (static) routing by 14 percent. Furthermore, the proposed method for managing DRs reduced the excess cost per served request by over 40 percent. Overall, the proposed integrated system improved the total routing costs by 16.5 percent on average compared to current practices. Originality/value – Both the planning problems and the related solution heuristics address original aspects of practical courier operations. Furthermore, the system integration and the proposed systematic planning contribute to the originality of the work.

This paper presents the case of a six year-old, male, thoroughbred horse with clinical signs of inappetence, weakness, and incoordination when walking. Clinical examination showed that the horse staggered and leaned to the left side. Feedstuff was present inside and around its mouth. Salivation was increased and there was no reflex at the palpebrae and tongue. The horse had difficulty swallowing and the tone of its tail was reduced. Botulism was diagnosed based on the clinical signs. Antibiotic (ceftiofur) and fluid-electrolyte treatment was commenced. Next day, neostigmin was added to the horse’s treatment, and it became recumbent. The horse’s palpebral, tongue and tail reflexes returned partially after neostigmine methylsulphate treatment on the same day and it stood up on day four. However, it could not swallow anything during the whole week, so after getting permission from the owner, the horse was euthanized on day 10. Samples of the colonic content and blood serum were sent by courier to the laboratory for toxin neutralization, however, botulinum neurotoxins could not be detected. After that, serum samples from days 6 and 10 were sent to another laboratory for testing for botulinum neurotoxin antibodies by ELISA. Specific antibodies against botulinum neurotoxin type A were measured, indicating a previous, immuno-relevant contact with the toxin. This seroconversion for type A supports the clinical botulism diagnosis. Type A botulism is rarely seen in Europe and has been detected in a horse in Turkey for the first time.

An unseparated serum specimen for a 36-year-old male was received from primary care. The specimen arrived in the laboratory at Cork University Hospital one day after collection, as documented on the paper request card, and was promptly centrifuged. Analysis was delayed for three days due to operational constraints and serum indices were run at the same time as the biochemical analyses. Results showed a moderately haemolysed specimen with remarkably low concentrations of both sodium (119 mmol/L) and total calcium (1.15 mmol/L), with all other parameters within their appropriate reference intervals (RIs). The complete report was released electronically and both sodium and calcium results were phoned to, and acknowledged by, the requesting general practitioner (GP). Discussion between the medical scientists and clinical biochemist on duty raised the possibility that the specimen was significantly older than initially thought. Further discussion of results with the GP clarified that the documented time of collection corresponded with specimen receipt by the courier, rather than the time of phlebotomy. Thus, the specimen was 7 days old when received in the laboratory and 10 days old when analysed. This case illustrates the dangers of multiple convergent preanalytical errors. Laboratories should be mindful of the stability of analytes in unseparated blood and unusual patterns of results which might suggest a specimen is “old”, and that this may coexist with erroneous request information. Any potential adverse effects on patient care were prevented in this case by laboratory vigilance.

Toko Ria Rasa Cake & Bake, Toko Nanis Cake & Bakery, and Samabread are the local UMKM located in North Bontang District, Bontang City. The purpose of this research is to find out and determine the appropriate competitive strategy for the three UMKM. This type of research is qualitative. Sources of research data are key informants and supporting informants. Data collection techniques in research are interviews and observations. The analysis technique used is SWOT analysis (IFAS, EFAS, SWOT Analysis Diagram, and SWOT Matrix). The result and conclusion from this research is that the target to be achieved is to open branches or shops in other places to expand the market. The products that are sold vary widely, ranging from sweet to salty, and there is bread made from natural ingredients without chemical food ingredients. The price of each bread also varies, which can cover various economic groups. The three UMKM do not mind the existence of competitors with big brand names as long as these brands can compete healthily. Strategies to survive during the Covid-19 pandemic are almost the same as maximizing online sales on social media, carrying out safe packaging by spraying disinfectants, and shipping using your courier or courier from outside. The strategy resulting from mapping the SWOT matrix for the three UMKM is the SO strategy.

Abstract Myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS/MPN) are complex clonal hematopoietic stem cell malignancies with overlapping dysplastic and proliferative features. Genomic analyses have charted the somatic mutation spectrum of MDS/MPN and revealed a major role for epigenetic dysregulation in their pathogenesis. No disease-modifying therapies are currently available, as progress has been hampered by a lack of genetically faithful in vivo model systems suitable for the preclinical development of new strategies. Yoshimi et al (Blood. 2017;130:397-407) recently showed that patients' chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) and juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML) cells transplanted into NOD/SCID-IL2Rγ-/-mice expressing human IL3, GM-CSF and SCF transgenes (NSG-3GS mice) produced xenografts that had mutations characteristic of the input cells. Since we had demonstrated a superior level of chimerism achieved from transplants of normal human CD34+cord blood cells in SirpaNOD/Rag1-/-/IL2rγc-/-/W41/41mice with c-KIT deficiency (with an otherwise mixed NOD-C57Bl/6 background - SRG-W41 mice) compared to conventional NSG or NRG hosts (Miller et al. Exp Hematol. 2017;48:41-49), it was of interest to explore their use as hosts of samples from patients with MDS/MPN: CMML, atypical chronic myeloid leukemia (aCML) and secondary acute myeloid leukemia (sAML) progressed from CMML or aCML. Heparinized blood or bone marrow samples were obtained from patients treated at Huntsman Cancer Institute after informed consent. Diagnoses included CMML (n=5), aCML (n=2), and sAML (n=2). Unseparated cells were shipped by overnight courier to Vancouver and CD34+cells isolated on the same day were injected intravenously into sub-lethally irradiated female NRG mice or SRG-W41 mice, or in some cases the same sex and strains also carrying the human 3GS transgenes (NRG-3GS or SRG-W41-3GS mice) in accordance with British Columbia Cancer Agency institutional guidelines. Occasionally when mice were not immediately available, or large numbers of cells were available, cells were viably cryopreserved and transplanted later after thawing. Mice were observed for up to 36 weeks after xenotransplantation with .05 to 1.1x106 human CD34+cells. Engraftment of human CD45+cells in xenografts was evaluated by immunophenotyping, and a median of 90% human chimerism (range: 1% - 95%) was achieved at the time of bone marrow harvest from xenografts. Variant allele frequencies (VAF) were determined in genomic DNA extracted from both the patient samples (CD34+cells) and matching fluorescence-activated cells (FACS)-sorted human CD45+cells (hCD45+cells) purified from xenografts (1-5 xenografts per patient sample). DNA samples were subjected to PCR amplification with extension primers and analyzed using a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer (MassArray, Agena Bioscience, San Diego, CA). Each mutation call was assigned by the software based on the molecular weight of the extended primer. Analysis of hCD45+cells from eight xenograft samples so far demonstrated a strong correlation of VAF between the patient samples and hCD45+cells from xenografts, in both SRG-W41-3GS (R2=0.94, p<0.01) and NRG-3GS (R2=0.97, p<0.01) models (Figure 1). This tight correlation of VAF was illustrated in hCD45+cells from xenografts transplanted with CMML, aCML or sAML cells. The majority of mutations detected were those in epigenetic regulator genes, such as ASXL1, EZH2 and TET2. No significant difference in VAF was observed between CD34+and CD34- compartments within the hCD45+cells. Additional samples, including specimens from patients with the related myeloproliferative neoplasm, chronic neutrophilic leukemia (CNL) are being analyzed and will be presented. These findings demonstrate the utility of SRG-W41-3GS as well as NRG-3GS as receptive hosts of primary human MDS/MPN cells with genetic evidence of their growth in these mice closely recapitulating the mutational profiles of the transplanted cells. These new strains may facilitate the development of functional screening and pre-clinical testing of novel therapeutic strategies for a range of human MDS/MPN and related myeloid disorders. Pickup and Delivery Problems (PDPs) constitute a class of Vehicle Routing Problems (VRPs) consisting of finding the optimal routes for a fleet of vehicles to deliver requests from a set of origin locations to a corresponding set of destinations. PDPs are NP-hard and have a wide variety of variants and potential constraints. This thesis evaluates methods for solving a dynamic single- vehicle PDP restricted by multiple time-related constraints. The problem is dynamic in the sense that new requests arrive as time is simulated and inserted into the vehicle’s pickup and delivery plan as it is being executed. The time- related constraints include limited time windows during which the requests may be picked up or delivered, as well as maximum ride times that items may spend in the vehicle before being delivered. To solve the problem, we adapt insertion heuristics based on Large Neighborhood Search (LNS) and Heuristic Destroy and Repair (HDR) to the problem and evaluate them in a comparative study. Solution methods for the PDP are also applied on the problem of dynamically assigning incoming orders to vehicles in a delivery service with a short planning horizon. A PDP-based order assignment strategy is compared with assignment strategies based on proximity and workload. Due to the short planning horizon of the target application, the study is focused on finding well-performing methods for quickly solving small PDPs containing 10-15 requests. Our results indicate that LNS outperforms HDR for small problem instances. However, the quick convergence of HDR allows it to outperform LNS for larger problem instances. We also show that applying a PDP- based assignment strategy in the order assignment problem allows the service to accommodate more requests than the alternative assignment strategies while simultaneously providing a significant reduction in operational costs. Future work may improve the order assignment strategy by incorporating more anticipatory functionality and streamlining the PDP methods with more efficient tests for the feasibility of solutions.

Already regarded as one of the top teams in Negro League baseball, the Kansas City Monarchs became known as a powerhouse unit in the 1930s and 40s. They rolled into towns with lights, amazing athletes, and competitive play. They won championship after championship during these years as Kansas City baseball fans strongly supported them. As they became an integral part of the city, the Monarchs' success, open-seating policy, and jazzy home openers fostered a large following of mixed-race fans. The local black newspaper, the Kansas City Call, held them up on a pedestal, while sportswriters for the mainstream Kansas City Star/Times downplayed the Monarchs' accomplishments and influence in the community. This thesis focuses on the relationship the Call had with the best team in black baseball through the context of its treatment of games, players, league officials, and team owners, as well as other patterns and tactics. Analysis of the Star/Times coverage is also considered to show variances in coverage between one city's race-divided newspapers. Negro League baseball and the African American newspapers that covered the teams grew out of and illustrated the segregation laws and prejudices feelings that existed in the United States during most of the twentieth century. Over time, especially when the sports world moved into the post-integration period, the Call's bolstering of the Monarchs deteriorated as the paper's promotion of democracy steered its sportswriters away from a baseball organization that symbolized segregation. The different types of coverage by the Call throughout the twenty-year study can be described as all-out promotion, balance, and abandonment. In the 1950s nostalgia and conflict existed, as the Call's sportswriters became torn on how to cover a team that was once the pride of the black community, but now represented inequality. In an attempt to remedy this torment, the Call tried to convince black baseball officials to remove the “Negro League” stigma by signing players of all races in order to mirror the more democratic Major Leagues. The white press, meanwhile, ignored the bigger issues of black baseball as one Negro League team after another died in the 1950s. The Star/Times peripheral coverage of the Monarchs provides context to the social issues and discriminatory practices at play in Missouri. As this thesis outlines the coverage of the Monarchs through the Black and White newspapers of Kansas City, previous research is substantiated and challenged to provide a fuller account of Jim Crow's effects.

By the author of the acclaimed The Complete Bushfire Safety Book, the latest edition of Joan Webster OAM’s Essential Bushfire Safety Tips has been revised and updated. The book deals with people's fears and concerns about bushfires in general, and the maze of official safety policies in the wake of Victoria's 2009 Black Saturday bushfires. Its concise and straightforward style clears a path of understanding through the tangle of conflicting opinions and misconceptions. It identifies the shortcomings and likely adverse repercussions of some of these policies, defines the actions necessary for people to stay safe during a bushfire – and their homes to remain intact – and sets out safe procedures. Essential Bushfire Safety Tips reveals the scientific post-bushfire research into why people who stayed with their homes died during the Black Saturday fires, and shows that, despite the almost universal media reports that 'nothing could be done to save homes on such a day', many householders did, in fact, save their homes. Included are new chapters on township protection; shelters, refuges and bunkers; as well as new information on choices of home bushfire safety strategies; protective house design, furnishings and gardens; protection of animals; and first aid. This book fills the gap between bushfire authority brochures and long, in-depth books. Backed by scientific facts, it brings a message of hope and empowerment: that with appropriate knowledge, preparation and awareness, towns, homes and people can survive bushfires. Set out in easy-to-access dot-point one-liners, it demystifies bushfire behaviour, explains how to prevent a bushfire from destroying houses, details the safe way to act at each stage of threat, describes weather factors and safe burning-off, details the benefits and hazards of staying, non-defensive sheltering, and evacuating, and how to make the decision on which course is best for you.

Endophthalmitis refers to inflammation of both the anterior and posterior intraocular chambers and their structures. This vision-threatening condition occurs in three principal scenarios: penetrating ocular trauma, after intraocular surgery, and in systemically infected (often immunocompromised) patients. Endophthalmitis presents with marked intraocular inflammation, often with hypopyon. Patients report pain and significant vision loss out of proportion to typical post-operative complaints. It is distinguished from uveitis by both history and slit lamp examination. Endophthalmitis is an ophthalmic emergency. Same day ophthalmology consult/referral is mandatory. Vision is threatened over the course of hours. Treatment includes prompt intravitreal injection of antibiotics by an ophthalmologist. Systemic therapy should occur only in in endogenous infections, continuing until cultures clear.

Day-stay surgery is becoming increasingly common the world over. There are several benefits of avoiding in-hospital care. Early ambulation reduces the risk for thromboembolic events, facilitates wound healing, and avoiding admission reduces the risk for hospital-related infection. Additionally, the risk of neurocognitive side-effects can be avoided by returning the elderly patient to their home environment. Day-stay anaesthesia calls for adequate and structured preoperative assessment and patient evaluation, and the potential risk associated with surgery and anaesthesia should be assessed on an individual basis. Need for preoperative testing should be based on functional status of the patient and preoperative medical history but even the surgical procedure should be taken into account. Preoperative fasting should be in accordance with modern guidelines, refraining from food for 6 hours and fluids for 2 hours prior to induction in low-risk patients. Preventive analgesia and prophylaxis of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) should be administered preoperatively. Local anaesthesia should be administered prior to incision, constituting part of multimodal analgesia. The multimodal analgesia strategy should also include paracetamol and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug in order to reduce the noxious stimulus from the surgical field. Third-generation inhaled anaesthetics or a propofol-based maintenance are both feasible alternatives. Titrating depth of anaesthesia by using an EEG-based depth of anaesthesia monitor may facilitate the recovery process. The laryngeal mask airway has become commonly used and has several advantages. Ultrasound-guided peripheral blocks may facilitate the early postoperative course by reducing pain and avoiding the use of opiates. Perineural catheters may be an option for prolongation of the block following painful orthopaedic procedures but a strict protocol and follow-up must be secured. Not only pain but even nausea and vomiting should be prevented, and therefore risk stratification, for example by the Apfel score, and PONV prophylaxis in accordance with the risk score is strongly recommended. Early ambulation should be encouraged postoperatively. Safe discharge should include an escort who also remains at home during the first postoperative night. Analgesics should be provided and be readily available for self-care when the patient comes home. Pain medication should include an opioid; however, the benefit versus risk must be assessed on an individual basis. Patients should also be instructed about a rescue return-to-hospital plan. Quality of care should include follow-up and analysis of clinical practice, and institution of methods to improve quality should be enforced for the benefit of the ambulatory surgical patient.

A refugee crisis of huge proportions erupted as a result of the mid-seventeenth-century wars in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Tens of thousands of Jews fled their homes, or were captured and trafficked across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. This is the first book to examine this horrific moment of displacement and flight, and to assess its social, economic, religious, cultural, and psychological consequences. The book traces the entire course of the crisis, shedding fresh light on the refugee experience and the various relief strategies developed by the major Jewish centers of the day. It pays particular attention to those thousands of Jews sent for sale on the slave markets of Istanbul and the extensive transregional Jewish economic network that coalesced to ransom them. It also explores how Jewish communities rallied to support the refugees in central and western Europe, as well as in Poland–Lithuania, doing everything possible to help them overcome their traumatic experiences and rebuild their lives. The book offers an intimate study of an international refugee crisis, from outbreak to resolution, which is profoundly relevant today.

Although American films, especially Hollywood fare, are often belittled for their one-dimensional portrayal of sex, a close examination of the history of sex in American motion pictures reveals that American cinema has actually represented sex in myriad ways. A more complete understanding of the ways in which sex has been represented onscreen requires an approach that pays equal attention to cinematic techniques and to the diversity of sexual values and behaviors in American society. It is necessary to frame this discussion within the multiple contradictions of an industry that has both repressed and represented sex with equal fervor over the course of its history; of audiences that have both taken offense at and flocked to films with sexual themes; and a body politic that has regulated the sexual in popular culture even as its discourse has been saturated with sexual images and topics. The History of Sex in American Cinemamoves seamlessly between general film and social history to clarify how exactly sex has been expressed cinematically, and how we have responded to those expressions as a culture. In March of 1965 the Supreme Court put into motion legal changes that marked the end of local film censorship as it had existed since the early years of the twentieth century. In Hollywood that same year,The Pawnbrokerwas released with a Production Code Seal of Approval, despite nudity that violated that Code. As sexual liberation occurred onscreen, parallel developments occurred in the way we lived our lives, and by the end of the 1960s Americans were having sex more often, and with more partners, than ever before. There was also now a public debate surrounding sexuality, and one of the loudest and most continually active voices in this debate was that of American film. This work begins with an examination of some of the earliest altercations in what later came to be known as the culture wars, and follows those skirmishes, more often than not provoked by American film, up to the modern day. By looking at how sex in the cinema has contributed to the demise of the fragile consensus between liberals and conservatives on freedom of expression,The History of Sex in American Filmsuggests a perspective from which today's culture wars can be better understood. This work combines close readings of many representative films-includingWho's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,The Graduate,Blue Velvet,Philadelphia,L.A. Confidential, andCloser-with a social and historical account of the most significant changes in American sexual behavior and sexual representation over the past fifty years.

Alcohol has been used for thousands of years and, indeed, in very different ways. Two thousand years ago, the occupying Romans sipped wine regularly but reasonably moderately, and marvelled at the local English serfs who celebrated bringing in their crops with brief episodes of unrivalled drunkenness. The use of alcohol was not only tolerated but sometimes encouraged by the ruling classes as a way of subjugating the population and dulling their awareness of the conditions in which they had to live and work. The adverse impact of gin consumption was famously recorded by Hogarth’s painting of ‘Gin Lane’ but, at the same time, beer was reckoned a safer alternative to water for fluid intake and was linked to happiness and prosperity in the sister painting of ‘Beer Street’. It was against the ‘pernicious use of strong liquors’ and not beer that the president of the Royal College of Physicians, John Friend, petitioned Parliament in 1726. Some desultory attempts were made by Parliament in the eighteenth century to introduce legislation in order to tax and control alcohol production but they were eventually repealed. It was really the onset of the Industrial Revolution in nineteenth-century England that brought into sharp relief the wasted productivity and lost opportunity from excess consumption. England moved from a rural, relatively disorganized workforce to an urban, more closely scrutinized and supervised one—for instance, in factories, where men needed their wits about them to work heavy machinery, workers that were absent (in body or mind) were noticed. And, in Victorian Britain, there arose a greater social conscience—an awareness, for example, of the harm, through neglect, inflicted on the children of those who spent their wages and their days in an alcoholic stupor. Nonetheless, the per capita consumption of alcohol in the UK at the end of the nineteenth century was greater than it is today. It fell progressively through the first half of the twentieth century, with two marked dips. The first coincided with the introduction of licensing hours restrictions during the First World War, and the second with the economic depression of the 1930s. Following the Second World War, there was a doubling of alcohol consumption between 1950 and the present day, to about 10 l of pure alcohol per capita. There has been a small fall of 9% in the last 5 years; this may be, in part, related to the changing ethnic mix and increasing number of non-drinkers. There has always been a mismatch between the self-reported consumption in lifestyle questionnaires, and the data from customs and excise, with the latter being 40% greater. From the latter, it can be estimated that the average consumption of non-teetotal adults in England is 25 units (0.25 l of pure alcohol) per week, which is well above the recommended limits of 14 units for women, and 21 units for men. Of course, average figures hide population differences, and it is estimated that the heaviest-consuming 10% of the population account for 40% of that drunk. While men continue to drink, on average, about twice the amount that women do, the rate of rise of consumption in women has been steeper. Average consumption is comparable across socio-economic groups but there is evidence of both more teetotallers and more drinking in a harmful way in the poorest group. In 2007, 13% of those aged 11–15 admitted that they had drunk alcohol during the previous week. This figure is falling, but those who do drink are drinking more. The average weekly consumption of pupils who drink is 13 units/week. Binge drinking estimates are unreliable, as they depend on self-reporting in questionnaires. In the UK, they are taken as drinking twice the daily recommended limits of 4 units for men, and 3 units for women, on the heaviest drinking day in the previous week. In 2010, 19% of men, and 12% of women, admitted to binge drinking, with the figures being 24% and 17%, respectively, for those aged 16–24. The preferred venue for drinking in the UK has changed markedly, mainly in response to the availability of cheap supermarket drink. Thirty years ago, the vast majority of alcohol was consumed in pubs and restaurants, whereas, in 2009, the market share of off-licence outlets was 65%. However, drinkers under 24 years of age still drink predominantly away from home. The UK per capita consumption is close to the European average, but consumption has been falling in Mediterranean countries and rising in northern and eastern Europe. Europe has the highest consumption of all continents, but there is undoubtedly massive under-reporting in many countries, particularly because of local unregulated production and consumption. It is estimated that less than 10% of consumption is captured in statistics in parts of Africa.

AbstractIn the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic when in-person courses were switching to emergency remote learning formats, even students online needed flexibility. This case study describes how a graduate-level online class on open learning and open educational resources (OER) was redesigned to both allow students to apply their course-related knowledge and skills in the service of others and accommodate students whose other life responsibilities had changed. Findings show that these online students experienced great stress during Spring 2020, and many had increased job duties related to the shift to remote learning. These students appreciated the flexible redesign and used it as an opportunity to help integrate OER in their own remote teaching and assist others to do the same. They provided their colleagues and the field at large with educational resources about finding, using, creating, and sharing OER, all while meeting course objectives. Even students who were not employed as educators or instructional designers embraced the opportunity to be helpers and deploy their new knowledge and skills. Student learning outcomes were assessed using reflective portfolios, and course objectives were met whether students followed the original course plan or took advantage of the course redesign.

AbstractThe chapter analyzes emotional expressions and corresponding moral dimensions in messages posted on the Chinese social media Weibo, and the participation character of public responses online, modeling their emergence and trajectories, and explaining the conditions that are necessary for them to evolve. Through statistical and qualitative interpretative analyses of a sample of observed emotions of Weibo posts over the course of 26 days in the Quangang carbon nine leak incident, as online environmental activism in 2018, we reveal that (1) different emotions exert miscellaneous effects on participation behaviors; (2) the same emotion would have disparate effects on different types of participation behaviors; and (3) the occurrence of moral dimensions especially promoted the generation and expression of activists’ emotions, which were magnified and strengthened through their spread on Weibo. Emotional expressions and their moral dynamics have shaped, but also been shaped by, the nature of the event and specific sociopolitical context and experience. The implications advance the understudied complexity between emotions, morality, and political participation behaviors in online activism in the authoritarian context.

Abstract In March 1859, Pierce Butler, grandson of a signer of the Constitution and ex-husband of actress Fanny Kemble, was forced to sell all 460 slaves from his Georgia plantations to pay off creditors. Naturally, an auction of this size drew considerable attention. According to a correspondent for the New-York Tribune, “For several days before the sale every hotel in Savannah was crowded with negro speculators from North and South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana, who had been attracted hither by the prospects of making good bargains;’ and “nothing was heard for days, in the bar-rooms and public rooms, but talk of the great sale, criticisms of the business affairs of Mr. Butler, and speculations as to the probable prices the stock would bring.” The reporter also noted that “the office of Joseph Bryan, the negro broker who had the management of the sale, was thronged every day by eager inquirers in search of information, and by some who were anxious to buy, but were uncertain as to whether their securities would prove acceptable.” Most of the slaves had been brought to Savannah in freight cars and were being held at a local track outside of town where the sale was scheduled to occur: “Little parties were made up from the various hotels every day to visit the Race Course, distant some three miles from the city, to look over the chattels, discuss their points, and make memoranda for guidance on the day of sale.” Although hard rains had threatened to reduce the size of the crowd, a Savannah newspaper reported that the two-day affair was still “largely attended,” and the local slave trader William Parker noted that Butler seemed “well pleased with the sale:’ The following week, practically every boat or train that left the city carried individuals who had been purchased at this sale.

Despite the fact that schools have undergone many changes, there are still those who believe that classrooms and the activities that take place in them have not changed. Some insist that modern classrooms still mirror the structure of old. In this chapter, the author argues that it is time to put this myth to rest. At the same time, he points out what today's teachers can achieve if they exploit the potential that the modern day classroom has to offer. With technological development, learning can occur in a variety of settings: either in a virtual classroom or in a physical space. When learning takes place in the combination of these two learning environments it is referred to as blended learning, and teaching that applies both modalities is referred to as blended teaching. The two classroom formats offer different characteristics that teachers can utilize for different purposes. A well-balanced blend will provide both teachers and students with great opportunities to experience visible teaching and visible learning.

Abstract Anesthesiologists are like pilots: our work, and the safety of those who rely on us, requires us to have a safe and reliable machine. And like pilots, we ensure that our machines are working well by checking them rigorously every day—either with an automated self-check (on the newest machines) or manually. Since most machines currently in use do not have an automated self-check, here’s how to check the machine yourself. First, quickly look at the machine to check that nothing is obviously broken or dangling loose. Then turn on all the different parts of it: the main switch, the gas analyzer, the patient monitor, and the bispectral index (BIS) unit. Don’t switch on the ventilator just yet. The gas analyzer takes awhile to warm up, so while you’re waiting, check the rest of the machine.

Abstract Three years along, my heart still stops a minute, some days, when you first walk in the door. I wonder if I’ll look like I know what I’m doing. I wonder if I’ll feel like I know what I’m doing—and whether you’ll notice. Sometimes, I can hold my curiosity out away from my anxiety; those are good days. Others, all my questions collapse into panic. I can worry about anything—how shaggy my beard is getting, or whether I wore the same shirt on this day last week, or if you already know I’m trans, and what it will be like for each of us when you find out. There are still stretches when I’m not at all certain I’m doing a convincing impression of “therapist.” The parts of myself I trust most are reasonably sure this is irrelevant to how much of a therapist I actually am. I try to remind myself of that, when I can’t get around to eating breakfast because my stomach is so unsettled over my next intake. Don’t take it personally—it’s definitely me, not you—but, of course, the same hesitation walks toe-to-heel with us both.

Abstract We are creatures of habit. Most people’s day is organized around the eating of three meals, with each meal pretty much scheduled to the same time of day. We also tend to retire and arise on the same schedule. On top of these basic biological dictates is the imposition of earning a living, an endeavor usually accomplished from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. There are several niggling reinforcements associated with this schedule. Steady employment is difficult if one habitually comes late to work or leaves early; and long lunches are out unless you happen to be eating with the boss. I guess it is safe to say that individuals and society have forced themselves and itself into a rut ... but this is not necessarily bad. Following a routine makes life a bit easier and much more efficient: It is not necessary to make decisions over the timing of fundamental events like eating and sleeping, and much more can be accomplished when we work in focused groups. And notice how a routine benefits older people, especially those whose minds are not functioning as well as they used to; they stick pretty much to rote behavior and thus glide through each day with only a minimal need for decision making and leadership. Of course, the rigidity can be overdone: Try and find a restaurant that will serve you a bowl of breakfast cereal at 7 P.M.

This document describes a graduate course called “An Introduction to Systems Engineering”. The course is being presented as part of a graduate program in the Management of Technology, in response to a specific need. This need has been recognized by technologists, over the years, who have been involved in the broader issues stemming from the mix of technology and business management. It has become clear that these two aspects of day-to-day operations are not always carried off well. However, by training business majors and technologists simultaneously, in some of the same courses of study and in the same class rooms, the management process should become more efficient. The need for exploiting this method is becoming more and more acute, with the passage of time.

The Mobile Learning aim is to develop methods of using mobile technologies to engage learners in achieving new skills and to develop learning for industries where learners find it difficult to access learning because of difficult shift patterns or dispersed patterns of working. Mobile learning objectives is to engage learners and support their progress towards skills, develop their vocational competence, especially using a blend of learning approaches. These approaches included the use of mobile devices such as mobile phones and PPCs. The paper use an flexible approach, which involves careful screening, assessment and targeting of learners to help them make progress quickly and efficiently. Will be described some capacity-building aspect of the mobile learning project to focus on developing capability for staff who were working to recruit, support or teach the learners. Mobile learning capacity to work with students and to contribute to the delivery of knowledge will be the most important part of this paper. Will be take into account some contributions of four EU supported projects which deliver solutions for serving distance online learners and have realistic cost efficiency considerations on developing parallel versions of courses. The conclusion is that Courses must be developed, presented and distributed in ways that allow both mobile and not mobile learners to participate and enrol in the same course and that course materials can be assessed both by standard and mobile technology with acceptable quality of all content elements. Interaction with course content and multi-media materials and communication with tutors and fellow students must also function adequately both through standard and mobile technology.

Born out of an altruistic desire to make quality higher education accessible to millions of learners around the world, massive open online education has lately come under increased scrutiny over its goals, uses and effects, while at the same time spurring academic debate on general educational issues such as curricular design, course delivery, the educator's role, student participation and retention, student engagement and motivation, student performance and evaluation. The present paper analyzes both the benefits and the disadvantages of massive open online courses (MOOCs): on the one hand, it looks at the MOOCs as salutary ways of democratizing higher education by providing free top quality courses delivered by personalities of today's academic world to interested learners in remote parts of the world, especially in developing countries, who may otherwise not have access to them. On the other hand, it considers the negative aspects of this new education model, with an emphasis on the implications of the "massive" element of MOOCs, the most significant of which is the frequently criticized "homogenizing" effect of massive open online education, its universalistic tendency to ignore students' diverse (academic, cultural, ethnic, social) backgrounds and proficiency levels that shape or determine their online engagement and performance. Given the characteristics of MOOCs, the paper also identifies the areas of study that are most suited to massive open online teaching and learning, and analyzes the applicability of massive online education to philological subjects. Finally, it considers the prospects of using massive open online education as an alternative to traditional higher education in Romania.

The clinical course was followed by measurement of blood pressure (by Riva-Rocci on the left brachial artery and by Doppler of the ankle artries), blood flow at restand after 3 min of tourniquet ischemia (by venous occlusion plethysmography), TcpCf2 at the wrist of the affected limb, and by subjective estimation of pain with visual analog scale before, at the end of the infusion period, as well as on day 7 and 14 of oral treatment, and 7 days after treatment while patients of both groups were on placebo. In addition spontaneous platelet aggregation by PAT III, induced platelet aggregation in whole blood by collagen and in PRP by ADP at different doses on the same days were measured on the same days as described above. Results: BM 13.177 completely inhibited aggregation in whole blood induced by collagen 0.3 (ig/ml, however one week after treatment a rebound phenomenon was observed with 16.0 ± 3.8 OHM compared to pretreatment value of 11.0 ± 3.8 OHM (p < 0.01). At a higher dose of 1.2 |ig/ml the same inhibiting effect on platelet aggregation was observed. Spontaneous platelet aggregation as measured by PAT III was evident in only 2/10 pat. pre-treatment, was abolished in all patients on i.v. BM 13.177, returned in 1/10 pat. during oral treatment, but in 4/10 pat. on day 7 after treatment, while being on placebo, again indicating a rebound phenomenon (p < 0.03) ADP induced platelet aggregation was not significantly affected by BM 13.177. In the placebo group, too, no significant differences were observable between the different treatment regimens. Clinical data did not show any significant alteration in either verum or placebo group during the six week period, indicating no benificial effect of thromboxane receptor antagonists in advanced stages of peripheral obliterative arterial disease, although platelet inhibiting effects were clearly demonstable.

Abstract In this paper we present a teaching model for Engineering couses, particularly courses of Applied Mechanics for the new generation of Engineering Programs. After the online terms due to the global pandemic, students and their professors returned to campuses and some lessons learned during that period were positive ones and students keep on demanding new models of teaching making use of the latest technologies. The use of digital media has become widely accepted by both, faculty members and students and most lectures are now recorded and students are used to have such material available on the same day of the class session. We present the students perceptions of what the new generation of Engineering courses should have in order to be attractive to students, help them develop some digital transformation competencies and, mainly, help them perform their best in courses that could be difficult, such as the Applied Mechanics courses. A total of 350 students were surveyed in the last four years, even prior to the pandemic to get their perceptions and their ideas on what an ideal Engineering course should contain, taking into account the era in which we are living, with particular focus on Digital Transformation Competencies and the use of new Artificial Intelligence tools such as ChatGPT®. We present a model that has been successfully implemented in our university and we think that Engineering educators worldwide can benefit from our experience and the recommendations our students provided.

Introduction: Coronavirus diasease 2019 (COVID-19) has been associated with inflammatory, ischemic and autoimmune neurological complications. We report a case of Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) as an autoimmune neurological complication in COVID-19, an association still rare in the literature. Case report: A 45-year-old woman, presented with back pain of strong intensity with irradiation to the left lower limb, associated with painful muscle contracture and weakness in the same limb with progressive worsening in two days. Neurological examination revealed strength grade II, hyporeflexia, tactile and vibratory hypoesthesia, and paresthesia of the left lower limb, with increased tonus and impossibility to bend the left knee. She presented with positive severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 polymerase chain reaction 12 days before the onset of symptoms. cCerebrospinal fluid and lumbosacral magnetic resonance imaging without significant changes, left thigh MRI with nonspecific edema and electroneuromyography compatible with left lumbosacral plexopathy. Stiff Person syndrome and autoimmune lumbosacral plexopathy were hypothesized. The treatment was started with methylprednisolone 1 g/day for five days and immunoglobulin 0.4 g/kg/day for five days with partial improvement. Anti-GAD AC performed, non-reactive. Screening for neoplasms was negative. In evolution, the patient progressed with involvement of the right lower limb, trunk, and upper limbs, respectively, with a fluctuating course and partial and temporary response to human immunoglobulin infusion and methylprednisolone pulse therapy. Conclusion: We report the associated time between SPS and COVID-19. SPS is a rare autoimmune disease related to anti-GAD AC and other antibodies. The temporal link with infectious agents that may trigger the autoimmune attack is uncommon in the literature, as the diagnosis is usually made years after the onset of symptoms. In this case, the diagnosis was made soon after infection, which allowed us to report another autoimmune neurological complication in COVID-19.

Today, the teacher must breathe even with the times, despite the fact that he is a connoisseur of his profession. Our young people today are curious, able to use new technologies very well. To interest them in the lesson, innovative technologies in the course of the lesson, as well as an interesting organization of the lesson using interactive techniques, requires a lot of responsibility from the teacher. Today's modern teacher should be able to apply information communication technologies (ICT) in his lesson. The organization of the course process on the basis of innovative technologies will help to make the course process interesting, active and quickly master the course. Therefore, nowadays, interest in the application of innovative technologies, pedagogical and information technologies in the educational process, attention is gaining strength day by day, one of the reasons for this is that until then, in traditional education, students-students are taught to acquire only ready-made knowledge, while modern technologies teach them to search for the knowledge they are acquiring, independently study and analyze, In this process, the teacher creates conditions for the development, formation, acquisition and upbringing of an individual, and at the same time performs the function of stewardship, orientation.

This paper summarizes the results obtained in a project conceived to improve remote and face-to-face teaching of Calculus in the fields of industrial and biomedical engineering. The project consists of developing teaching videos that treat key topics of Calculus subject through some engineering problems at a first level university course. We focus on achieving the goal of learning by setting it in the approach and solution of a subject, making it more experiential. This type of practice should be the central focus of activities inside and outside the classroom. In this way we will be able to consolidate the students' mathematical skills, but at the same time acquire other skills that will be vital for their professional and personal development. The evaluation process must be formative, as the assessment should provide teacher-student feedback in order to adjust teaching or learning based on the information received. We propose two main types of activities: Production of audiovisual material for the improvement of teaching and completion of Wiris questionnaires for self-assessment. The didactic video is very useful in class and has a motivating intention because rather than transmitting exhaustive and systematized information on the subject, it aims to open questions, raise problems, arise the interest of students, disturb and generate a participatory dynamic. With the elaboration of these videos, we promote that students be able to understand through specific problems and with the help of graphic material, a specific problem and then move on to the abstraction of more general situations.

This paper reports on a longitudinal study of lessons learned from a graduate-level New Product Development course taught at the University of California at Berkeley, comparing lessons learned by students during the course with alumni perceptions one to ten years after graduation. Previous research on student learning outcomes in New Product Development (NPD) found that on the last day of class students identify working in multifunctional teams and understanding user needs as their most important lessons learned. This study raises the question of whether or not students maintain the same emphasis on learning outcomes once they have moved on to careers in industry. To answer this question, we conducted 21 in-depth interviews with alumni who took the course between 1995–2005 and are now working in industry. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the alumni interviews reveals that former students still highly value what they learned about team work and understanding user needs, but see more value in tools for concept generation, prototyping, and testing after gaining work experience. The results reaffirm the value of engaging students in multidisciplinary design projects as a vehicle for developing the professional skills needed in today’s competitive new product development environment.

To say that we—and with “we” I mean humanity as a whole—have big challenges ahead of us would be a massive understatement. The earth’s climate crossed several crucial tipping points this year. Our lives are still overshadowed by a pandemic whose societal repercussions we do not even begin to fathom. And we are at the brink of a new era in which our biggest evolutionary advantage so far—our intellect—will be outrivaled massively by machines. I take it for granted that the only realistic chance to deal with these challenges is science and the technology we build on the basis of scientifc insight. Of course, I am not saying that science alone will be able to save the day. But just like it took a scientifcally engineered vaccine to turn things around with COVID-19, we will need more than thoughts and prayers to preserve a su¡ciently stable biosphere for our children and grandchildren...

Resumo:
The major US household travel surveys do not ask the right questions to understand mobility in Walkable Neighborhoods. Yet few subjects can be more important for sustainability and real economic growth based on all things of value, including sustainability, affordability, and quality of life. Walkable Neighborhoods are a system of land use, transportation, and transportation pricing. They are areas with attractive walking distances of residential and local business land uses of sufficient density to support enough business and transit, with mobility comparable to suburbia and without owning an auto. Mobility is defined as the travel time typically spent to reach destinations outside the home, not trips among other destinations that are not related to the home base. A home round trip returns home the same day, a way of defining routine trips based on the home location. Trip times and purposes, taken together, constitute travel time budgets and add up to total travel time in the course of a day. Furthermore, for Walkable Neighborhoods, the analysis focuses on the trips most important for daily mobility. Mismeasurement consists of including trips that are not real trips to destinations outside the home, totaling 48 percent of trips. It includes purposes that are not short trips functional for walk times and mixing of different trips into single purposes, resulting in even less useful data. The surveys do not separate home round trips from other major trip types such as work round trips and overnight trips. The major household surveys collect vast amounts of information without insight into the data needed for neighborhood sustainability. The methodology of statistics gets in the way of using statistics for the deeper insights we need. Household travel surveys need to be reframed to provide the information needed to understand and improve Walkable Neighborhoods. This research makes progress on the issue, but mismeasurement prevents a better understanding of the issue.

Our hypothesis was that postnatal stress exposure or sensory input alters brain activity, which induces acetylation and/or methylation on lysine residues of histone 3 and alters methylation levels in the promoter regions of stress-related genes, ultimately resulting in long-lasting changes in the stress-response set point. Therefore, the objectives of the proposal were: 1. To identify the levels of total histone 3 acetylation and different levels of methylation on lysine 9 and/or 14 during both heat and feed stress and challenge. 2. To evaluate the methylation and acetylation levels of histone 3 lysine 9 and/or 14 at the Bdnfpromoter during both heat and feed stress and challenge. 3. To evaluate the levels of the relevant methyltransferases and transmethylases during infliction of stress. 4. To identify the specific localization of the cells which respond to both specific histone modification and the enzyme involved by applying each of the stressors in the hypothalamus. 5. To evaluate the physiological effects of antisense knockdown of Ezh2 on the stress responses. 6. To measure the level of CpG methylation in the promoter region of BDNF in thermal treatments and free-fed, 12-hour fasted, and re-fed chicks during post-natal day 3, which is the critical period for feed-control establishment, and 10 days later to evaluate longterm effects. 7. The phenotypic effect of antisense “knock down” of the transmethylaseDNMT 3a. Background: The growing demand for improvements in poultry production requires an understanding of the mechanisms governing stress responses. Two of the major stressors affecting animal welfare and hence, the poultry industry in both the U.S. and Israel, are feed intake and thermal responses. Recently, it has been shown that the regulation of energy intake and expenditure, including feed intake and thermal regulation, resides in the hypothalamus and develops during a critical post-hatch period. However, little is known about the regulatory steps involved. The hypothesis to be tested in this proposal is that epigenetic changes in the hypothalamus during post-hatch early development determine the stress-response set point for both feed and thermal stressors. The ambitious goals that were set for this proposal were met. It was established that both stressors i.e. feed and thermal stress, can be manipulated during the critical period of development at day 3 to induce resilience to stress later in life. Specifically it was established that unfavorable nutritional conditions during early developmental periods or heat exposure influences subsequent adaptability to those same stressful conditions. Furthermore it was demonstrated that epigenetic marks on the promoter of genes involved in stress memory are altered both during stress, and as a result, later in life. Specifically it was demonstrated that fasting and heat had an effect on methylation and acetylation of histone 3 at various lysine residues in the hypothalamus during exposure to stress on day 3 and during stress challenge on day 10. Furthermore, the enzymes that perform these modifications are altered both during stress conditioning and challenge. Finally, these modifications are both necessary and sufficient, since antisense "knockdown" of these enzymes affects histone modifications, and as a consequence stress resilience. DNA methylation was also demonstrated at the promoters of genes involved in heat stress regulation and long-term resilience. It should be noted that the only goal that we did not meet because of technical reasons was No. 7. In conclusion: The outcome of this research may provide information for the improvement of stress responses in high yield poultry breeds using epigenetic adaptation approaches during critical periods in the course of early development in order to improve animal welfare even under suboptimum environmental conditions.

Learning Losses during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Ethiopia: Comparing Student Achievement in Early Primary Grades before School Closures, and After They Reopened. The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the education sector in unprecedented ways. As with many other countries around the world, the Ethiopian government closed schools following the first identified case in the capital city, Addis Ababa, on the 16th of March 2020. Across the country, these closures resulted in more than 26 million learners staying at home for almost eight months (UNESCO, 2021). In addition to this hiatus in their education, pupils were promoted automatically to the next grade with only 45 days of catch-up classes (Ministry of Education, 2020). In other words, those attending a specific school grade in March 2020 were then promoted to the next grade when school resumed in October 2020. For a significant proportion of Ethiopian pupils, learning during school closures was extremely limited despite the government’s efforts to create educational programmes via national television and radio stations (Kim et al., 2021a; Yorke et al., 2020). School closures, combined with barriers to accessing remote educational resources, meant potential learning losses for a significant number of pupils. Several studies have already indicated that COVID-19 resulted in learning losses, especially among the poorest and most disadvantaged groups. A study in Indonesia found that pupils lost 11 points on the PISA3 reading scale due to the four-month school closure from March to July 2020 (Yarrow, Masood & Afkar, 2020). It was also estimated that Grade 4 pupils in South Africa experienced losses equivalent to more than 60 percent of an academic year (Ardington, Wills & Kotze, 2021), while pupils in the UK lost a third of their expected learning during pandemic-related school closures (Major, Eyles & Machin, 2021). It is anticipated that school closures in Ethiopia could similarly result in learning losses and challenges for pupils to catch up with their learning, particularly for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Our related emerging findings in Ethiopia have indicated that school closures exacerbated pre-existing inequalities in education, where progress was much lower for rural students compared to those in urban areas who were tracked from Grade 4 to Grade 6 (Kim et al., 2021b; Bayley et al., 2021). Building on this work in Ethiopia, this Insight Note provides a new perspective on numeracy achievements of Grade 1 and Grade 4 pupils by comparing learning at the start of each academic year and the gains over the course of the year across two academic years: 2018-19 and 2020-21. During the 2018-19 academic year, the Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE) Ethiopia programme collected data on students’ numeracy achievement from 168 schools. After schools reopened in October 2020, and with additional support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, data on students’ numeracy achievements were collected for two new cohorts of pupils in Grades 1 and 4 in the same schools using the same instruments. This has enabled us to compare learning patterns between two cohorts in the same grades and schools before and during the pandemic. More specifically, in this Insight Note, we aim to: -Compare foundational numeracy levels of pupils entering Grade 1 in the 2020-21 academic year relative to those in 2018-19. -Compare progress in foundational numeracy for Grade 1 pupils over the course of the 2020-21 academic year relative to that seen during the 2018-19 academic year. -Compare numeracy levels of pupils entering Grade 4 in the 2020-21 academic year relative to those entering the same grade in 2018-19. -Compare progress in numeracy for Grade 4 pupils over the course of the 2020-21 academic year relative to the progress seen during the 2018-19 academic year. -Estimate the magnitude of learning loss attributable to the pandemic by calculating the difference in numeracy levels and progress between the two cohorts.
