Changes in the Visual Form of Aaro Hellaakoski’s Poem ”Vieras” (”The Stranger”) The present article shows how genetic criticism (critique génétique) can enrich our understanding and interpretation of visual poetry by examining the manuscript, proofs and published versions of the poem ”Vieras” (” e Stranger”) from the typographically experimental collection Jää- peili (”Ice Mirror”, 1928) by the Finnish poet Aaro Hellaakoski (1893–1952). e collection is regarded as a forerunner of Finnish modernism, and particularly its experimental typography got successors only as late as in the 1960s. Besides omitting punctuation and upper case letters, Hellaakoski experiments with the auditory and visual dimensions of ”Vieras” by dividing metrical stanzas and line units into typographically separate groups. In his later selected poems Valitut runot (”Selected poems”, 1940) and Runot (” e Poems”, 1947), Hellaakoski stripped ”Vieras” from these experimental features. e examination of the manuscripts and proofs of ”Vieras” shows that Hellaakoski’s later revisions actually revert the poem to a form closer to its early, visually more traditional, manuscript versions. e article suggests, that it was probably the integrity of Jääpeili as a modernist collection that motivated Hellaakoski into the experimental typography and ortography of ”Vieras”. ese features became dispensable when the poem was released from the context of the collection.

Karibialainen kirjallisuus hyödyntää runsaasti kasvimetaforia. Erityisesti sokeriruoko ja mango esiintyvät usein seksuaalisuuden kuvauksissa, jolloin niiden ominaisuudet ja historia rakentavat seksuaalisuutta, eivät vain heijasta sitä. Kirjallisuusantologian Caribbean Erotic (2010) runot sekä Oonya Kempadoon romaani Buxton Spice (1998) ovat artikkelissa lähemmän tarkastelun kohteina. Niissä erityisesti sokeriruoko assosioituu orjuuden historian takia kärsimykseen ja negatiivisiin tunteisiin, kun taas mango on selkeämmin seksuaalisen nautinnon hedelmä. Vertauksien sokeriruoko ja mango ovat kielellisten ilmaisujen lisäksi aktiivisia seksuaalisuuden toimijoita ja säätelijöitä, joilla on oma kielellisen diskurssin ulkopuolinen todellisuutensa. Rita Felskin (2015) mukaan kehitelty postkriittinen luenta voi orientoida lukijan kokemaan teosten seksuaalisuuden intiimissä yhteydessä karibialaiseen luontoon ja maisemaan. Lukijaa, tuntevaa subjektia, liikuttavien kasvimetaforien luenta voi synnyttää uudenlaisia, ekologisia orientaatioita.

Luku- ja kirjoitustaidon yleistyminen 1900-luvulla kasvatti kirjoitetun sanan valtaa ja vei puhutun sanan kohti marginaalia. Suunta on ollut sama eri elämänalueilla arkipäiväisestä viestinnästä sanataiteeseen. Sanat, jotta niillä olisi todellista merkitystä, on voitava nähdä kirjoitettuina. Kuulon ja kuuntelemisen merkitys on vähentynyt ja ihmisen kokemusmaailma muuttunut korostetun visuaaliseksi. Kaunokirjallisten tekstien painaminen muistiin on menettänyt merkityksensä. Tekstit säilyvät ja ovat siirrettävissä kirjoitetussa muodossa. Koko maailman runous on lukijan saatavilla ilman runonlaulajaa, hänen muistiaan ja läsnäoloaan. Runon lukija hallitsee omaa aikaansa. Suomen kaltaisessa maassa, jossa jo useat sukupolvet ovat olleet lukutaitoisia, on edelleen heitä, jotka haluavat kuulla. Runo on todellinen vasta sitten, kun sen tulkitsee ääni, oma tai jonkun muun. Ääni saa esittää, olla joku toinen, ottaa toisen hahmon. On heitä, joille runo ei ole ainoastaan kirjaan painettu teksti, vaan ”kuulon asia”, kuten runoilija Aaro Hellaakoski on esseessään muotoillut. Tutkielmassa etsitään vastausta siihen, miksi runo halutaan kuulla, miksi ”runo on kuulon asia”. Kuulijan kokemusta lähestytään selvittämällä, mikä merkitys äänellä, puheella ja yhteisellä kokemisella on ihmiselle. Ääni ja poeettinen kieli suistavat jatkuvaa hallintaa tavoittelevan nykyihmisen tiedostamattoman armoille, kohti aluetta, jossa ihminen ei ole tunteitaan täysin hallitseva ja kaikkivoipa. Ääni, sen aistiminen ja tuottaminen, on lujasti sidoksissa ihmisen varhaisiin vaiheisiin. Runouden kieli voi olla ihmisen tietoisuudelle ennestään tuntematonta, mutta tutkielmassa esitellyt neurotieteiden alaan liittyvät tutkimukset osoittavat, että ihminen voi tunnistaa runouden kieltä tiedostamattaan, vaistonvaraisesti. Sanoilla on merkitys. Tapa puhua sävyttää sanojen merkitystä ja rakentaa niiden sisällön uudestaan. Puhuttu runo merkitsee uuden luomista. Puheen prosodia, tapa tuottaa puhetta, välittää kuulijalle puhujan tuntemia emootioita ja nostattaa niitä kuulijassa, ehkä samoja, ehkä jotain muita. Tapa puhua vetoaa kuulijan kognitioon ja vaikuttaa sanojen merkityksen hahmottamiseen. Lyriikantutkija tutkii kirjoitettua tekstiä. Vaikka tulkintoja voi olla lukuisia, teksti pysyy muuttumattomana, mutta puhuttu runo on aina eri. Kuten kieltä opitaan, puhuttua runoutta ymmärretään vuorovaikutuksessa toisten ihmisten kanssa. Yhteinen kuuntelu on ikiaikainen tapa, joka on viime vuosina keksitty uudelleen. Yksilöllisyyttä korostavassa maailmassa yhteenliittyminen luo tunteen jatkuvuudesta ja yksilön merkityksestä osana ihmisten yhteisöä. Tutkielman nimestä on pääteltävissä, että polkuja puhutun runon poetiikkaan edelleen etsitään. Kirjallisuudentutkija Auli Viikarin kolmekymmentä vuotta sitten väitöskirjassaan peräämää teoriaa ei vielä ole. Tutkielmassa vastausta tutkimuskysymykseen on etsitty useiden eri tieteenalojen, kuten kognitiivisen poetiikan, neurotieteiden, kognitiivisen psykologian, metriikan, kehityspsykologian, yleisen kielitieteen, fonetiikan ja musiikkipsykologian tutkimuksesta. Ajan ilmiöt ja niiden tarkastelu täydentävät lähteenä käytettyä tutkimuksellista tietoa.

The demands for ride comfort quality in today's long haulage trucks are constantly growing. A part of the ride comfort problems are represented by internal vibrations caused by rotating mechanical parts. This thesis work focus on the vibrations generated from radial runout on the wheels. These long haulage trucks travel long distances on smooth highways, with a constant speed of 90 km/h resulting in a 7 Hz oscillation. This frequency creates vibrations in the cab, which can be found annoying. To help out with the vibration diagnosis when a truck enters a mechanical workshop, this work studies methods for radial runout detection using the wheel speed sensors.

The main idea is to represent the varying radius signal with a sinusoid, where the calculations are based on Fourier series. The estimated radial runout value is then the amplitude of the sinusoid. In addition to the detection part, the work also present results regarding how the relative phase difference between two wheels with radial runout effects the lateral motion of the cab.

This thesis work was performed at Scania CV AB in Södertälje, Sweden and all measurements have been full scale experiments on real trucks.

This essay is based on a survey of student’s attitudes and knowledge about global warming. A survey was used to obtain answers. The questionnaire is divided into three different stages. Some whit knowledge- based questions, one whit self-assessing questions and some with selffulfilling questions. Several studies have been created to survey students’ attitudes and knowledge, to see if there are knowledge gaps among university student, and to see if the universities lack certain teaching components. In the results, it was noted that Karlstad’s students had relatively low level of knowledge and assessed their own knowledge relatively high to the actual knowledge they hold. The students felt that society cares about global warming to some extent, and they want to counteract global warming but at the same time adapt society to the climate of the future. As an Australian study, (Pfautsch . and Gray 2017), the Karlstad students had an equal view as the Australian students of how to evaluate various sources of global warming, for example, politicians, classic media and social media were ranked among all as very unreliable sources.

Resource management have been, and still are essential for humans, partly because of the constantly changing environment. The landscape provides basic material for survival and therefore it becomes important to understand the different stages of environmental influences and developments in parallel to the increasing complexity of Bronze- and Iron Age societies. Investigating the causes for human interactions with the environment and the following consequences for the biodiversity provides crucial information about organized systems for a sustainable resource management in our modern society. Finding archaeological traces of “hävd” (claimed land) and other types of manifestations in the landscape stress the fact that land becomes a more valuable resource from both a social and practical view. Over a longer perspective the process of going from a mobile hunter-gatherer lifestyle to a sedentary agricultural one also becomes a process of going from a collective to a private managing of resources. This project aims to investigate that development.

I uppsatsen redovisas resultaten av undersökningen samt förs en diskussion kring pedagogiska spel och hur de kan användas i skolan.


The subject of this thesis is the pedagogic game in education. The researchers have created and developed a pedagogic game called “Nordic tour”, and tested the game in two schools in

Haninge and Sollentuna. The result of the test, the game and a discussion of the pedagogic game and how they can be used in education is presented in this thesis.

Genom en fallstudie av planeringsverktyget grönytefaktorn undersöks i denna masteruppsats offentliga och privata aktörers samverkan och strategier i arbetet för mer miljövänliga städer. Det insamlade materialet bygger på intervjuer med olika aktörer som arbetat med grönytefaktorn samt analys av styrdokument. De teorier som används för att förstå samverkan runt planeringsverktyget är Bulkeley och Kerns teori om styrning, Hrelja et al samt Youngs perspektiv på samverkan och de Certeaus begreppspar strategi och taktik. Resultatet visar att planeringsverktyget kräver en genomgående samverkan i hela planprocessen och att offentliga aktörer behöver hitta nya sätt att kombinera styrande genom auktoritet med dialog och förhandlade överenskommelser. Genom att studera planeringsverktygets implementeringsprocess uppstår nya kunskaper om dess operationella svårigheter och insikter om att det i ett planeringslandskap med en mängd olika privata och offentliga aktörer krävs kontinuerliga kombinationer av styrning och samverkan, exempelvis möjliggörande, tillhandahållande och stegvist förtroendebyggande. Det krävs även en delad förståelse hos de inblandade aktörerna om hur och varför planeringsverktyget ska användas.

The lichen population in the vicinity of Domsjö factory, Örnsköldsvik, was studied since many common species seemed to be negatively affected. The first lichen inventory in Örnsköldsvik was done in 1960 and the last one was made in 1988. A connection between the effected lichen and the sulphur dioxide emission as well as the distance from Domsjö factory was then made. The purpose of this study was to investigate if any change could be found in the population of pendoulus lichen in the vicinity of Domsjö factory, Örnsköldsvik, since the last study dating back to 1988. This study investigated the following facts; which are presence, length, and at what height on the trees the lichen Alectoria sarmentosa, Bryoria capillaris and Usnea spp. Only lichen on spruce, with trunks bigger than 150mm at breast hight were also included in the inventory. The results are based on data from 42 sites. No connection between the Domsjö factory, and the presence of Bryoria capillaris could be made, while Usnea spp. still seem to be affected. The length and the height of the investigated lichen did not seem to be affected; by the distance from Domsjö factory nor by the inventoried tree structures. No samples of Alectoria sarmentosa were found in the inventory.

During the 12th to the 16th century the Scandinavian region went through a cultural change, from Germanic to Latin culture. This change effected a wide variety of areas for example law, piety, clothing, religion and system of writing. It is the change in the system of writing this essay will examine i.e. the change from runes to the Latin alphabet. The medieval runic Europe (including the Nordic countries and the north Atlantic islands) has a great variety in their numbers of runic material but in total there is about 2800 of them. Most are from the Scandinavian countries Sweden and Norway. The runic alphabet and the Latin alphabet coexisted during the Nordic Middle ages but the Latin alphabet became dominant over time.The runic alphabet changed during the 11th and 12th centuries from 16 runes to 28 (as many letters as the Latin alphabet) and was in continues use during the whole time period. The question is why it survived for so long? How come the runic alphabet did not die out sooner given the introduction of the Latin alphabet and the influence from Latin countries (i.e. Western Europe)? Earlier research has largely focused on the Viking age carvings and has not problematized the change from an historical point of view or from a cultural perspective. This essays goal is to explain that change by categorizing the inscriptions according to their theme and content in order to identify runic usage as a cultural belonging, be it a passive or active choice. I will also discuss the literacy level (or to be precis the runeliteracy) of the Scandinavian countries. Who could read the runes and in what context where they used?

AbstractThe history of Runet is not just a chronological account of the major events in the Russian Internet space. We take a historical approach in order to identify the boundaries of Runet as an object of investigation. This chapter offers a framework for the examination of Runet as a constantly changing socio-technical object. Due to the participatory nature of its continuous construction, Runet has been addressed as a “runaway object” (Engeström, 2008). In order to follow the development of this “runaway Runet,” we identify and follow five interrelated vectors: the technological vector, the cultural vector, the media vector, the user vector and the political vector. This allows us not only to describe the history of Runet but also to contribute to an understanding of what it is and whether there is an “end to Runet.”

AbstractDigital literature on the Russian-language Internet includes a broad variety of phenomena, from online libraries to writers’ blogs, from hypertext to Internet memes. The chapter begins by clarifying the terms “digital literature” and “Runet,” drawing on a functional understanding of literature in the tradition of Russian Formalism. It embeds Runet literary studies into global contexts and gives an overview of essential phenomena (hypertext, fan fiction, blogging) and narratives. It analyzes local discourses, which, in turn, attempt to make sense of global communication technologies, for example, by conceptualizing digital self-publishing as samizdat, that is, the historical phenomenon of clandestine underground publication in the post-Stalin Soviet Union. The chapter concludes with an overview of research approaches and methods, both qualitative and quantitative, and of the challenges that future analysis will face.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">During validation of a new brake lining on a light duty truck application, the brake rotor exhibited high lateral runout on the friction surfaces. As the engineering team investigated the issue more carefully, they noticed the rotor lateral runout was also changing from revolution to revolution. The team ran testing on multiple light pickup vehicles and found differences in the amount of rotor runout variation. The rotor lateral runout and runout variation can cause vibration and pulsation of the passenger seat and the steering wheel. To identify the root cause of the high level of rotor lateral runout and runout variation, measurement data was collected and analyzed from the vehicle level test. During further analysis, some of the runout variation corresponded to a wheel bearing internal frequency. The bearing internal geometry was studied to confirm what factors affected the runout variation. The team also conducted testing to see how the mating components may have affected the wheel bearing. In addition to the vehicle testing, fixtures were built to perform brake corner bench testing. This testing showed that both the total runout and runout variation increased as more mating components were added. Brake corners from two different vehicles were bench tested. The major difference between the vehicles was the mounting location of the splash shield. On one vehicle the splash shield is mounted (sandwiched) between the knuckle and the bearing’s outer ring flange and on the other vehicle, the splash shield is directly mounted with screws to the knuckle (not sandwiched). Splash shield distortion due to compression near the knuckle bolts and the bearing outer ring contact surface, caused the larger total runout value and the higher variation. The study also proved that continuous assembly/disassembly will increase the distortion on the mating parts, which leads to the greater total runout and variation values.</div></div>

Abstract This paper describes an experimental study of the mechanism of drilling runout and its influence on hole quality. This approach considered the effects of the drilling runout on the hole quality features under various cutting conditions. The drilling runout model was developed as a flexible cantilever beam with a tilt offset. A series of drilling experiments was performed to investigate the drilling runout effect on the hole quality. Standard twist drills were used to drill aluminum workpieces. The drilled hole quality was measured by a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). It showed that the drilling runout has a significant effect on hole quality.

Cutter Runout is the eccentricity caused by a combination of imperfections in the cutting tool, tool holder, and spindle. While magnitudes of cutter runout are generally small (e.g 10 μm), the effect is noticeable in high tolerance finishing operations, and can cause significant variations in the force experienced on a multi tooth cutter. The goal of this research is to design and evaluate an indirect runout estimation method, using feed force components at the spindle and tooth passing frequency. The accuracy of the method is evaluated for a range of cutting conditions for 4 and 6 tooth helical flat end mills. The standard error of the runout estimation method for 27 test cases was determined to be 7.1 μm. The error was skewed by several data points from a 6 tooth cutter. Additional testing is needed with 2, 3 and 5 tooth cutters.

Abstract Rotating bending fatigue (RBF) life is a critical performance index for oil drilling equipment. It can be measured via cantilever-type RBF testing, with a sideload applied on the specimen to generate the required bending moment at the point of interest. Multiple factors cause runout or eccentricity of the test specimen at the sideload point, leading to deviations in the effective sideload acting on the specimen and, consequently, deviations in the bending moment at the point of interest. Runout generates greater uncertainty in fatigue life test results. A Universal Runout Compensator (URC) was developed to reduce this uncertainty by mitigating the test specimen runout. It consists of two eccentric bushings, one assembled inside the other. Depending on the relative orientation of the two bushings, the total eccentricity of the URC can be adjusted. With the properly set URC installed on the specimen, the final runout at the URC where the sideload is applied becomes negligible. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to confirm the URC structural integrity. Full-scale RBF tests were conducted to validate the URC design and FEA studies. With the URC used in the tests, bending moment variation decreased by up to 15%, reducing life cycle uncertainty by up to 44%.
