This paper details the implementation of a Web crawler aimed at automating ruleset construction for “HTTPS Everywhere,” with a goal to convert HTTP URLs to secure HTTPS equivalents for enhanced communication security. Developed within a seven-month timeframe, the crawler faced challenges in verifying HTTPS support, varying based on SSL certificate existence and validity. Successful ruleset creation and testing in Firefox and Chrome, adhering to stylistic standards, demonstrated the potential for effective development. The paper explores improving productivity through alternative libraries like Scrapy and Scrapy Cloud. While certain goals, such as in-depth cryptocurrency analysis and web crawler background reading, were unmet due to time constraints, valuable insights were gained. The conclusion underscores the difficulties, successes, and promises of automating ruleset generation through web crawlers for “HTTPS Everywhere,” offering valuable recommendations for advancing web security.

Abstract The ability to identify the entrepreneurial potential of students enables higher education institutions to contribute to the economic and social development of a country. Current research trends regarding the detection of student entrepreneurial potential have the greatest challenge in the unequal ratio of datasets. This study proposes a rule-generation model in an imbalanced situation to classify student entrepreneurship based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The result is a ruleset that is used for the early detection of student entrepreneurial potential. The proposed method consists of three main stages, namely preprocessing data to classify data based on TPB variables, generating a dataset by clustering and selecting attributes by sampling to balance the data, and finally generating a ruleset. Furthermore, the results of the detecting ruleset have been evaluated with actual data from the student tracer study as ground truth. The evaluation results show high accuracy so that the ruleset can be applied to the higher education environment in the future.

The hunt to categorize context-aware applications has been a prevalent issue to developers of context-aware applications. The previous categorizations were based on the functions of the applications. These mechanisms yielded limited results since many applications could not be categorized. This paper categorizes applications into four generations based on developmental trends through a literature survey. The first generation applications focused on data acquisition and used hardware sensors. The second generation applications focused on knowledge acquisition and used software sensors, semantic language and ontology-based modelling languages. The third generation applications focused on intelligent reasoning and used mechanisms to handle information uncertainty. The fourth generation applications deprecate cumbersome ruleset implementations and focus on artificial intelligence whilst taking into consideration the effect of the dynamics of users’ background and preference on contextual information. The study demonstrated that when applications, methods or technologies can be categorized over some time, it is better to classify them into generations.

Machinations Ruleset Generator (MaruGen) is a semi-automatic system for the generation of mechanics, rules, spaces (environments), and missions for video games. The objective of this system is to offer an expression mechanism for the video game designer role based on the definition of rules, and the ability to explore the concepts of progression and emergence in video games by using a formal, usable, and defined tool to design games with innovative and complex elements, and behaviors defined from combinations of basic elements. Based on the expressed designs and with the participation of programmers and video game artists, MaruGen allows the generation of agile video game prototypes in the Unity game engine. These prototypes can be analyzed by the entire workgroup to look for games with diverse complexities that make them attractive to their users. MaruGen is based on the expression of rules on elements of interest in video games and the rewriting mechanism using L-Systems for the generation of procedural content. MaruGen was evaluated in the construction of the Cubic Explorer video game and tested by gamers and video game developers during the Game Jam Ludum Dare 38.

Background: The application of Machine Learning (ML) to genetic individual-level data represents a foreseeable advancement for the field, which is still in its infancy. Here, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of an ML-based model for disease risk prediction applied to Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC). Methods: Genome-wide significant variants identified in subjects of European ancestry in the recently released second international meta-analysis of GWAS in PBC were used as input data. Quality-checked, individual genomic data from two Italian cohorts were used. The ML included the following steps: import of genotype and phenotype data, genetic variant selection, supervised classification of PBC by genotype, generation of “if-then” rules for disease prediction by logic learning machine (LLM), and model validation in a different cohort. Results: The training cohort included 1345 individuals: 444 were PBC cases and 901 were healthy controls. After pre-processing, 41,899 variants entered the analysis. Several configurations of parameters related to feature selection were simulated. The best LLM model reached an Accuracy of 71.7%, a Matthews correlation coefficient of 0.29, a Youden’s value of 0.21, a Sensitivity of 0.28, a Specificity of 0.93, a Positive Predictive Value of 0.66, and a Negative Predictive Value of 0.72. Thirty-eight rules were generated. The rule with the highest covering (19.14) included the following genes: RIN3, KANSL1, TIMMDC1, TNPO3. The validation cohort included 834 individuals: 255 cases and 579 controls. By applying the ruleset derived in the training cohort, the Area under the Curve of the model was 0.73. Conclusions: This study represents the first illustration of an ML model applied to common variants associated with PBC. Our approach is computationally feasible, leverages individual-level data to generate intelligible rules, and can be used for disease prediction in at-risk individuals.

As mathematical computing becomes more democratized in high-level languages, high-performance symbolic-numeric systems are necessary for domain scientists and engineers to get the best performance out of their machine without deep knowledge of code optimization. Naturally, users need different term types either to have different algebraic properties for them, or to use efficient data structures. To this end, we developed Symbolics.jl, an extendable symbolic system which uses dynamic multiple dispatch to change behavior depending on the domain needs. In this work we detail an underlying abstract term interface which allows for speed without sacrificing generality. We show that by formalizing a generic API on actions independent of implementation, we can retroactively add optimized data structures to our system without changing the pre-existing term rewriters. We showcase how this can be used to optimize term construction and give a 113x acceleration on general symbolic transformations. Further, we show that such a generic API allows for complementary term-rewriting implementations. Exploiting this feature, we demonstrate the ability to swap between classical term-rewriting simplifiers and e-graph-based term-rewriting simplifiers. We illustrate how this symbolic system improves numerical computing tasks by showcasing an e-graph ruleset which minimizes the number of CPU cycles during expression evaluation, and demonstrate how it simplifies a real-world reaction-network simulation to halve the runtime. Additionally, we show a reaction-diffusion partial differential equation solver which is able to be automatically converted into symbolic expressions via multiple dispatch tracing, which is subsequently accelerated and parallelized to give a 157x simulation speedup. Together, this presents Symbolics.jl as a next-generation symbolic-numeric computing environment geared towards modeling and simulation.

Frequent itemsets mining is the core part of association rule mining. At present most of the research on association rules mining is focused on how to improve the efficiency of mining frequent itemsets , however, the rule sets generated from frequent itemsets are the final results presented to decision makers for making, so how to optimize the rulesets generation process and the final rules is also worthy of attention. Based on encoding the dataset, this paper proposes a encoding method to speed up the generation process of frequent itemsets and proposes a subset tree to generate association rules which can simplify the generation process of rules and narrow the rulesets presented to decision makers.

According to certain rules and possible rules in NISs, minimal certain rules and minimal possible rules are defined. Discernibility functions are also introduced into NISs for generating minimal certain rules. Like minimal rule generation in DISs, the condition part of a minimal certain rule is given as a solution of an introduced discernibility function. As for generating minimal possible rules, there may be lots of discernibility functions to be solved. So, an algorithm based on an order of attributes is proposed. A tool, which generates minimal certain rules and minimal possible rules, has also been implemented.

In an era of rapid changes alongside a global pandemic (COVID-19) that changed rules in the world of work, a new generation of employees, Generation Z (born 1995-2010) has been absorbed, joining three older generations, baby boomers, Generation X and Generation y. Qualitative research with high-tech company managers in Israel examined management issues constituting intergenerational gaps and affecting the new world of work. It was found that although Generation Z workers are characterized by high both technological and independent learning personal abilities giving them an advantage in relation to previous generations, there is a sharp decline in its commitment levels to an organization and managers and its ability to persevere with long-term tasks. The new generation of workers expects a greater home/work balance and indulgent workplace enabling enjoyment and a social life within work hours. Research findings provide an infrastructure for different management and leadership thinking in light of the Generation Z challenge and the gap between the different generations.

Abstract A new self-similar graphene structure with different construction parameters is created to investigate the scalability of transmission coefficient. The transfer matrix formalism is used to calculate transmission spectra for generations of the self-similar structure. Two cases are analyzed: In the first case, the barriers were created by substrates, which induce a gap in the graphene. In the second case, the barriers were created by electric fields that can produce a displacement of the Dirac cones. We find that both cases show self-similarity patterns in their transmission spectra, which can be demonstrated through analytical equations called scaling rules, those rules connecting the generations of the structure. It results when the height of the barriers (V 0) is scaled or not, it gives different scaling rules, which shows that V 0 can be a revealing factor to find alternatives to scaling the transmission coefficient. Scaling rules can be useful because one can determine the transmission coefficient of generation i + 1 only by knowing a generation i.

In public decisions with long-term implications, decisions of the present generation will affect long-term welfare, including future generations. However, only the present generation is able to participate in such decision-making processes. In this study, we invited “Imaginary Future Generations” (IFGs), as participants in a discussion who take on the role of members of future generations to argue on behalf of their future interests to engage in present-day deliberations among residents of a Japanese town. Through analysis, it was seen that the deliberations among IFGs rose interest in issues that are related to common fundamental needs across generations. While the cognitive aspects of interpersonal reactivity, which measure the reactions of one individual to the observed experiences of another, were seen as useful in arguing for the interests of future generations, it was suggested that the environment for deliberation had a significant impact on the ability to effectively take on the role of members of future generations. Finally, this paper positioned IFGs within the broad context of general rules for good decision-making, based on an analysis of these deliberations and in light of philosophical arguments such as the veil of ignorance by John Rawls.

The article deals with the problem of interaction between generations in the emerging digital age. With the introduction of digital technologies into everyday life, qualitatively new conditions for the existence of society are formed, what affects the interaction of generations. Based on the following classification of generations – the “book” generation, the “TV” generation, the “Internet” generation – which have different value attitudes, specific ways of organizing work, communication, forming value ideas and priorities, different ways of experiencing life in general, the authors explore the characteristic features of a new generation. These include the problem of freedom and transparency of existence in the world of gadgets. The article also discusses the problem of communication in the presence of an intermediary – a gadget that sets its own rules of social interaction, including short communications aimed at achieving fractional, rapid goals, what leads to the situativeness of human existence in the digital world. The next problem that follows from the previous one is the problem of personality and its self-determination, which is expressed in the presence of polyidentities. The fourth characteristic feature is a specific way of getting information. The turn-of-the-century generation is also characterized by the absence of a “big hero” and the absence of a “big goal” that people of previous generations aspired to. As a way to achieve intergenerational consensus, we propose the formation of a multi-figurative culture in which all the generations which we have identified participate equally.

Using the category of generations and assuming that the human body is a social construct resulting from the process of the socialisation of the biological – a symbolic form reflecting the rules, social hierarchies and cultural obligations binding in a given society and at a given historical moment, the article proposes an answer to the question: how does the moment of life of representatives of different generations, and thus the socio-cultural conditions defining selected generations of Polish men and women, determine the way in which the appearance of the body of contemporary seniors is interpreted? The collected material allows us to perceive generational differences (in the chosen topic), while the literature used helps to interpret the results of the study.

When Apriori was first introduced as an algorithm for discovering association rules in a database of market basket data, the problem of generating the candidate set of the large set was a bottleneck in Apriori's performance, both in space and computational requirements. At first, many unsuccessful attempts were made to improve the generation of a candidate set. Later, other algorithms that out performed Apriori were developed that generate association rules without using a candidate set. They used the counting property of association rules instead of generating the candidate set as Apriori does. However, the Apriori concept has been used in many different areas other than counting market basket items, and the candidate generation problem remains a bottleneck issue. The approach described here improves the overall time and space requirements by eliminating the need for a hash table/tree of formation for the candidate set.

Automated game design (AGD), the study of automatically generating game rules, has a long history in technical games research. AGD approaches generally rely on approximations of human play, either objective functions or AI agents. Despite this, the majority of these approximators are static, meaning they do not reflect human player's ability to learn and improve in a game. In this paper, we investigate the application of Reinforcement Learning (RL) as an approximator for human play for rule generation. We recreate the classic AGD environment Mechanic Maker in Unity as a new, open-source rule generation framework. Our results demonstrate that RL produces distinct sets of rules from an A* agent baseline, which may be more usable by humans.

AbstractAutomatic generation of high-quality meshes is a base of CAD/CAE systems. The element extraction is a major mesh generation method for its capabilities to generate high-quality meshes around the domain boundary and to control local mesh densities. However, its widespread applications have been inhibited by the difficulties in generating satisfactory meshes in the interior of a domain or even in generating a complete mesh. The element extraction method's primary challenge is to define element extraction rules for achieving high-quality meshes in both the boundary and the interior of a geometric domain with complex shapes. This paper presents a self-learning element extraction system, FreeMesh-S, that can automatically acquire robust and high-quality element extraction rules. Two central components enable the FreeMesh-S: (1) three primitive structures of element extraction rules, which are constructed according to boundary patterns of any geometric boundary shapes; (2) a novel self-learning schema, which is used to automatically define and refine the relationships between the parameters included in the element extraction rules, by combining an Advantage Actor-Critic (A2C) reinforcement learning network and a Feedforward Neural Network (FNN). The A2C network learns the mesh generation process through random mesh element extraction actions using element quality as a reward signal and produces high-quality elements over time. The FNN takes the mesh generated from the A2C as samples to train itself for the fast generation of high-quality elements. FreeMesh-S is demonstrated by its application to two-dimensional quad mesh generation. The meshing performance of FreeMesh-S is compared with three existing popular approaches on ten pre-defined domain boundaries. The experimental results show that even with much less domain knowledge required to develop the algorithm, FreeMesh-S outperforms those three approaches in essential indices. FreeMesh-S significantly reduces the time and expertise needed to create high-quality mesh generation algorithms.

The author considers a problem of automatic synthesis (induction) of the rules for transforming the natural language formulation of the problem into a semantic model of the problem. According to this model a program that solves this problem can be generated. The  problem is considered in relation to the system of generation, recognition and transformation of programs PGEN ++. Based on the analysis of literary sources, a combined approach was chosen to solve this problem, within which the rules for transforming the natural language formulation into a semantic model of the problem are generated automatically, and the specifications of the generating classes and the rules for generating a program from the model are written manually by a specialist in a specific subject area. Within the framework of object-event models, for the first time, a mechanism for the automatic generation of recognizing scripts and related entities (CSV tables, XPath functions) was proposed. Generation is based on the analysis of the training sample, which includes sentences describing objects in the subject area, in combination with instances of such objects. The analysis is performed by searching for unique keywords and characteristic grammatical relationships, followed by the application of simple eliminative-inducing schemes. A mechanism for the automatic generation of rules for replenishing / completing the primary recognized models to full meaning ones is also proposed. Such generation is performed by analyzing the relations between the objects of the training sample, taking into account information from the specifications of the classes of the subject area. The proposed schemes have been tested on the subject area "Simple vector data processing", the successful transformation of natural language statements (both included in the training set and modified) into semantic models with the subsequent generation of programs solving the assigned tasks is shown.

The alpha generation has creative, passionate, dynamic, leadership, and confident characters in making future career decisions, inseparable from technology in completing their work. Technological developments and pandemic conditions drastically changed the values and concepts of the line of education in carrying out teaching and learning activities and in the transfer of information. In library services, for example, major changes are needed in managing and disseminating information to respond to these conditions. This is to provide a balance in adjusting the style and character of the alpha generation in obtaining information. The purpose of this study is to analyze the character of the alpha generation so as to find patterns of information needs. In addition, it aims to determine the implications for library services. In this study, the study used was a literature study. From the description of the analysis that has been carried out, it can be concluded that the alpha generation is a multitasking generation, digital native, does not like rules, is creative, and flexible, connects, and collaborates as well as practicum. While the context of the information needs of the alpha generation tends towards information in digital formats and direct, applicable and easy information to be directly shared through social media. The implications of library services are expected to adjust the pattern of service performance to meet the information needs of the alpha generation including: changes in expectations of access to library information services that focus on idealistic and fast and sophisticated personal convenience, readiness for data appearance that is ready to share or share data directly, use of social media for promotion and communication lines across generations, the competence of librarians as professional data analysts is not only managing and maintaining but also participating in generating and repackaging information.

Abstract. In participants’ learning of semantically related paired associates, such as whale-mammal, prior research has demonstrated that having participants first attempt to predict what the to-be-learned response to a given cue will be enhances subsequent cued recall of that response, even when such predictions are always wrong (e.g., Kornell et al., 2009 ). In six experiments, we evaluate the importance of such error-prone predictions having a semantic basis – versus an acoustic (rhyming) basis. Our results show that both semantic generation as well as semantically related materials seem necessary if errorful generation is to have positive effects; generation based on other rules and materials does not aid learning. Learners are not, however, metacognitively aware of such benefits of generating errors.

Some of my earlier arguments, suggesting modifications of the Standard Model of Particle Physics (see ref. 1), are elaborated and extended. Rules deduced from the known properties of elementary fermions are sharpened and extended in the first part. Conclusions drawn from the rules in the second part are also honed and expanded and an estimate of the neutrino mass eigenstates is added. In the third part, a tentative explanation of the rules is discussed. In my earlier paper, I suggested replacing the point-sources postulated by the Standard Model for each generation by finite 'source-shapes', equal for all elementary fermions of a generation and systematically decreasing in volume from the first to the third generation, thus increasing the effect of self-interactions. According to the rules a correlation exists between the mass of an elementary fermion and the strength of its self-interaction, thus an increase in self-interactions would resolve the problem of the hierarchical masses. A possible connection between the existence of only three generations and the three-dimensionality of space also is discussed. In the epilogue the question is explored whether finite source-shapes for the elementary fermions can be reconciled with fundamental theoretical tenets.

This paper analyzed socioeconomic characteristics of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) that have implications for employment and income generation potentials in Osun and Oyo states of southwestern Nigeria. The paper used multistage sampling technique to identify and collect data from 1020 SMEs, analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical technique. The result showed that gender bias inhibits both income and employment generating potentials, with male dominance over female dominance hindering female ability to pivot and reduce poverty among business owners while age has a significant positive effect on employment generation but not a significant factor in generating revenue. Marital status has a negative effect on job creation but not significant in their income-generating potential. Labour regulation and access to credit are the two most significant institutional factors affecting MSMEs' income and employment generating potentials. Religion does not appear to be a significant component in boosting income-generating potential and education is seen as having a negligible negative influence. Financial difficulties are the greatest restriction for MSMEs in Osun and Oyo states while taxation and government policy have a positive impact on income generation potential, as compliance with official rules encourages firms to explore government incentives.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present and develop an ontology-based approach for automatic generation of assembly sequences. Design/methodology/approach In this approach, an assembly sequence planning ontology is constructed to represent the structure and interrelationship of product geometry information and assembly process information. In the constructed ontology, certain reasoning rules are defined to describe the knowledge and experience. Based on the ontology with reasoning rules, the algorithm for automatically generating assembly sequences is designed and implemented. Findings The effectiveness of this approach is verified via applying it to generate the assembly sequences of a gear reducer. Originality/value The main contribution of the paper is presenting and developing an ontology-based approach for automatically generating assembly sequences. This approach can provide a feasible solution for the issue that mathematics-based assembly sequence generation approaches have great difficulty in explicitly representing assembly experience and knowledge.

This problem can be approached in several ways, including generating natural language descriptions of game rules, generating instructive game levels, and generating demonstrations of how to play a game using agents that play in a human-like manner. We further argue that the General Video Game AI framework provides a useful testbed for addressing this problem.

One of the promising areas for using Prolog-systems is to solve logical tasks. This study outlines a solution approach based on the state generation procedure and the verification procedure. A solution to a logical task is presented, which demonstrates in practice the proposed approach and method of specifying a procedure for generating states. In the proposed example, a bit chain is generated that defines the code of a particular letter in the solution of the applied problem. Building a solution by means of code generation with verification allows not storing in the knowledge base a binary tree of all possible codes. The process of generating new states can be associated with the training of the program, with the dynamic formation of the knowledge base. The approach is based on the capabilities of software environments for adding facts and rules to existing ones, which were obtained as the results of the program or its stages. In this case, the entire program is the generating rule. An analysis of the constructed and tested procedures for the dynamic generation of states and the generation of facts allows us to talk about the applicability of such a solution for certain applied problems.

Filipino Generation Z's creative ability to experiment with morphemes is a factor in the emergence of new words. These lexical items possess the capacity to function as nouns, verbs, and adjectives within the Filipino language. This study aims to examine how Filipino Generation Z slang terminologies are formed if such terms undergo a particular process that adheres to a specific morphological structure and if new sets of rules are observed that are not included in the current morphological rules. Since the researchers used words to analyze the gathered data, a qualitative research design utilizing content analysis was employed in this study. This study employed homogeneous sampling, with researchers extracting only Generation Z slang from the Facebook posts of PNUV first- to fourth-year students as the corpus. The framework matrix was used to determine the morphological processes underlying Generation Z slang. Consequently, it was determined that word formation processes such as coinage, borrowing, compounding, blending, clipping, acronyms, affixation, conversion, and multiple processes were utilized to create Generation Z slang. In addition, the data revealed additional word formation processes, such as contraction, reduplication, and spelling change. Most Filipino Generation Z slang word formation was categorized as a change in spelling. Future researchers can gain a deeper understanding of how the Filipino generation z's language is shaped and how it differs from previous generations by examining linguistic patterns and word forms.

Abstract As more and more reservoirs are built, concentrated water releasing in the dry season will bring about additional flow compensation and the joint operation of cascade hydro plants is quite important. This paper discusses the water level decline strategy of four cascade hydro plants in the Jinsha River and analyses the relationship between guaranteed output and total power generation. Considering stochastic inflows, an implicit stochastic optimization method is employed and a multi-objective parallel differential evolution algorithm is proposed to extract dispatching rules. Finally, a method which combines discriminant method and dispatching rules is proposed for practical operations and achieves good performance. Compared with routine scheduling, the power generations of the proposed method are improved observably in different typical years. The average power generation increases about 3% with the same cascade minimum output.

The visualization of search space makes it easy to understand the behavior of the Genetic Algorithm (GA). The authors propose a novel way for representation of multidimensional search space of the GA using 2-D graph. This is carried out based on the gene values of the current generation, and human intervention is only required after several generations. The main contribution of this research is to propose an approach to visualize the GA search data and improve the searching process of the GA with human’s intention in different generations. Besides the selection of best individual or parents for the next generation, interference of human is required to propose a new individual in the search space. Active human intervention leads to a faster searching, resulting in less user fatigue. The experiments were carried out by evolving the parameters to derive the rules for a Parametric L-System. These rules are then used to model the growth process of branching structures in 3-D space. The experiments were conducted to evaluate the ability of the proposed approach to converge to optimized solution as compared to the Simple Genetic Algorithm (SGA).

Abstract In high renewable energy penetrated power systems, the flexibility of power system resources is indispensable. With the implementation of domestic ancillary service markets, the revenue of ancillary services provided by generating units is gradually changing from the planned mode to the market mode. Moreover, the access threshold for generating units to participate in the ancillary service market has changed. At the same time, the flexibility of generating units has a great impact on the revenue of the ancillary service market. Therefore, this paper summarizes the flexibility requirements of typical pilot areas in China for generating units to participate in ancillary service markets. Then, the corresponding flexibility evaluation indexes of different ancillary services are sorted out and the flexibility evaluation model is developed to evaluate the flexibility ability of power generation enterprises scientifically. The flexibility evaluation system proposed in this paper can effectively evaluate the flexibility capability of generating units and conduct its flexibility enhancement.

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, the application of this new technology to music generation has attracted more attention and achieved gratifying results. This study proposes a method for combining the transformer deep-learning model with generative adversarial networks (GANs) to explore a more competitive music generation algorithm. The idea of text generation in natural language processing (NLP) was used for reference, and a unique loss function was designed for the model. The training process solves the problem of a nondifferentiable gradient in generating music. Compared with the problem that LSTM cannot deal with long sequence music, the model based on transformer and GANs can extract the relationship in the notes of long sequence music samples and learn the rules of music composition well. At the same time, the optimized transformer and GANs model has obvious advantages in the complexity of the system and the accuracy of generating notes.

The results showed that the whole biomass of poplar seedling decreased significantly with the leaf area and its ratio increased, and the growth was inhibited obviously. The biomass aboveground was more than that underground. The ratios of leaf biomass and newly emerging branches biomass of first continuous cropping poplar seedling were relatively high. With the continuous cropping generations and growth cycle increasing, poplar seedling had a growth strategy to improve the ratio of root-shoot and root-leaf to adapt the limited soil nutrient of continuous cropping.

Notions of generalised fuzzy conditional and equivalence rules relative to a combination function are introduced and a framework for reasoning with such rules is described. The applicability of this framework to machine learning and knowledge discovery problems is demonstrated. Methods for the automatic generation of two particular types of generalised rule are proposed. The two rule forms considered are rules with weighted AND/OR combination functions, as suggested by Zimmerman and Zysno, and evidential logic equivalence rules as defined by Baldwin. The process of generating rule bases is divided into the problem of generating fuzzy sets from data and that of finding combination functions to optimise the performance of the system given these fuzzy sets. For the former problem a mass assignment based approach is adopted and for the latter semantic discrimination analysis is used in conjunction with customised optimisation algorithms. The potential of rule bases of both forms is illustrated by their application to a number of model and real world machine learning problems.
