Texto completo da fonteContemporary graphic novels address intimate themes such as autobiography and everyday life. They try to represent the unspeakable, the interiority that resists direct figuration, and they have to create modalities of disclosure that do not imply the distortion of intimacy. To do so, graphic novel artists often resort to strategies used by other media. They can also refer to them in order to cause a breach in the narrative and the figuration through which the reader can catch a glimpse of intimacy. Theater, photography, sketches or travelbooks, dance or cinema often break into the panel. They can even deeply modify the form of graphic novels. Analysing nearly forty intimate and intermedial contemporary Spanish graphic novels, this thesis studies the modalities of representation of intimacy. Moreover, it aims at defining its challenges in the 21st century. It also shows that intermedial references allow the artist to articulate the text and the image in a different way to suggest intimacy. Apparatus and intermediality theories turn out to be relevant tools to examine interconnection levels between different media, as well as their impact on the figuration of intimacy. The intermedial porosity of the graphic novel also questions its media status and its position in the contemporary editorial and cultural context. Its relations with the comic and the novel are ambiguous, since they oscillate between distancing and approaching. Moreover, on the one hand, they corroborate the mediatic independence of the graphic novel, while, on the other hand, they invalidate it. This thesis aims at finding out if the contemporary Spanish graphic novel is already established as a cultural series differentiated from the comic, or if it is still in an emerging stage

Texto completo da fonteThis project explores the connections between the graphic novel and several interrogations about contemporary Spanish memory, through the prism of emotion and testimonies to the Civil War and Francoism. Its origins lie in the observation that the graphic novel of Spanish memory has become a democratic cultural object: it is an ideal medium for democratizing knowledge of this traumatic past, so often instrumentalized in political debates in the current context of a war of memories. Based on a corpus of graphic novels published between 2007 and 2023, this study examines the use of testimonies and their transformation into graphic narratives. It is also based on interviews with the authors and photographs of their preparatory documents. The first part of the study takes a closer look at the creation of graphic novels of memory, analysing the triggers of the creative process, the methods used for gathering testimonies and the genetic study of the graphic novel in the corpus, from the writing of the script to the sale or conservation of the original artworks. The second part examines strategies for sharing the past through the aesthetics of testimony and the expression of emotion, which contribute to the intelligibility of events and fostering empathy in the reader. The third part looks at how the graphic novel of memory, while questioning its own history, its political role and the desire to popularise the past, echoes questions linked to the representation of the past and its use in the present that run through contemporary Spanish society

Texto completo da fonteThis study proposes to examine the relationship between the visible or non-visible structure of the first novels by Marcel Aymé (1902-1967) and the presence of numerous aspects of orality in the novels. An ethnocritical approach to these narratives makes it possible to combine a poetics of the novel with an anthropology of symbols. We base our study first of all on a theory of the “talking novel” (“roman parlant”) related to the period between the two world wars, which corresponds to the period when Marcel Aymé began publishing his work. Then we trace the presence and awareness of writing (as opposed to orality) through an examination of the stylistic effects of what could be called a composite form of writing and the role of these effects in the overall strategy of the author. In effect, we perceive intertextual echoes of the classics but also an interest in new forms of literary and cinematographic expression. The particular attention to narrative voice, but also the presence of the burlesque and of irony, are elements that help one to understand the aesthetic choices of the young author and the cultural style of his novels. In the central part of this analysis the characters are studied in the perspective of their search for identity and of their way of coming to terms with the public and social systems with which they are confronted through events involving their civil status (marriage, death, etc.). Their relationship with the image and power of numeracy is another important dimension of the complex dynamics of this search for identity. The voices that one hears in the narration, public or private, individual or collective, consensual or dissenting, are examined for the clues they yield concerning the cultural tensions present within the communities represented in the novels. The last part of the thesis examines the conflict and convergence between literacy as a “habitus” and the living traces of orality as they appear in the novels of the corpus (Brûlebois, Aller retour, La Table-aux-Crevés). This study also aims at being open to the world of Marcel Aymé as a whole and at being attentive to the interrelations between all the publications of the author, including his newspaper articles and his plays
