Texto completo da fonteThe aim of this thesis is the analysis of the novel Dombey and Son (1848), by Charles Dickens. It is his seventh novel and represents a watershed in his work: in it, social criticism, the observation of manners and the diagnosis of the age became more incisive. Always bearing in mind the attempt to establish the relationship between literary form and social process, I argue that the narrator in Dombey and Son tries to elaborate aesthetic solutions for real contradictions while dealing with paradoxical midnineteenth- century English society. Despite all the changes since then, and in a broader context now, substantial parts of these contradictions have been emphasized, acquiring a certain degree of accepted normality. In this sense, our challenge is to investigate in the very form of the novel signs of something that goes beyond it: in its present and in its future.

Abstract: In this PhD dissertation I try to explain an important formal change in Joaquim Manuel de Macedo's first novels, which were written between 1844 and 1855, before he abandoned the genre for almost a decade. What occurred was a progressive de-functionalization of "extravagance" - a very common expression in his books -, that was used to portray a youth inscribed in a new kind of sociability, more modern, which Brazil experienced after 1808 and mainly after 1822. As those narratives were composed according to a generational opposition - young characters behaving in accordance with a new set of rules, on one side; and the old ones a bit apprehensive about these changes, on the other -, that defunctionalization ended up stifling the real protagonism of the youth, a process of which Vicentina (1853) may be the best example. Following the steps of Franco Moretti, for whom literature is one of the ways we use to master and to understand historical changes, I read that process in the light of a conservative shift that occurred in that period: a moment which ascribed a major importance to a centralized authority. As a result, the Brazilian novel reached, around 1850's, a formal impasse: Macedo could not reduce even more the space assigned to the youth without modifying its literary function; in other words, without giving the protagonism of the narrative to the older characters, transforming the Brazilian novel into a depository of an openly anti-modern world view. This is not an attractive perspective to a nation recently emancipated and anxious to be a part of the "civilized" world

Texto completo da fonteBalada da Praia dos Cães (Balad of Dogs Beach) is a central novel in the work of José Cardoso Pires considering the point of view from which it is narrated. The author keeps two complementary faces on which the book lies: one of a factual and historical dimension, whereupon the novel was disserted; another of a fictional nature. The interstitial point of view is exactly the novels touchstone, whose instability between fact and fiction establishes the principle of all other narrative structures and is also the link of Balada da Praia dos Cães with the whole work of José Cardoso Pires. Generally speaking, the book contains an assessment of the initial period in the Portuguese Salazar-period crisis: the artificiality, slowness and breakdown of bureaucratic institutions, circumscribed to the official discourse of the State; society degradation because of denunciation and torture practices, in the form-limit of fear; national indecision between the Marialva tradition and the modernization associated with the European project; insistence of traditional literary forms combined with the borrowing of other foreign forms as a reflection of such indecision; conservatism which is refractory to womens emancipation; the most perverse forms of repression those are the terms through which the period under discussion is brushed against the grain through an interstitial perspective being itself a structural reduction of the Portuguese semi-peripheral experience.

Abstract: This thesis presents a critical analysis of Marçal Aquino’s novels, namely O invasor (2002), Cabeça a prêmio (2003), and Eu receberia as piores notícias dos seus lindos lábios (2005), with the objective to highlighting how the stories of the heroes Ivan, Brito and Cauby contribute to experimenting with the detective genre form. In order to do so, we have included an analysis of the short story “Matadores”, by the same author, which will function as an interpretative matrix for the novels. We argue that the novels by Marçal Aquino are organized around the point of view of a hero who is immersed in the world of Brazilian pistolagem (banditry), a context where violence is rationalized and turned into raw material for capital. Considering this, the author’s novels not only develop the traditional form of the detective novel, but also experiment on it, since Aquinian heroes, propelled mainly by resentment, vary among the genre’s three fundamental elements: detective, criminal, and victim. In this way, Aquino’s protagonists are a kind of synthesis of the traditional detective novel’s three categories, and what they do is show that, in terms of the narrative model, there is experimentation with the novel’s form which questions and discusses some aspects of Brazilian society. These heroes take part in a historical and political context branded by the intersection between law and order, by a State that administers crime, and by hitmen adjusted to the logic of labor and market laws, vi... Bolfarine, Mariana.
Texto completo da fonteThis dissertation examines the concept of literary space in the novel A House for Mr. Biswas (1961), by the Indo-Caribbean writer V. S. Naipaul. We have based our reading upon the relationship between space and subject by means of Bakhtins chronotopes, verifying the presence of two major themes: that of closure, related to the way in which space affects the constitution of the subjectivity of the characters, and that of transition, about the displacement of the protagonist, Mr. Biswas, from a rural to an urban space, awakening in him a glimpse of agency. We have conducted a detailed analysis of the newspaper and of colonial education, and then the focus shifts to the house and its structural components, as well as to the possessions which the protagonist accumulates throughout his life. We conclude that A House for Mr. Biswas is a metafictional novel that uses the metaphor of writing and that of the building of the house in order to represent the process of constructing the novel itself. Metafiction is disclosed through the parody of the formation novel, already incorporated by English literature of the 18th and 19th centuries, resulting in the creation of a new novel, which aspires to become part of the established literary tradition, but that is still, at the same time, is indebted to it.

Texto completo da fonteThis paper presents an analysis of the novel A varanda do frangipani, from the Mozambican writer Mia Couto, in order to illuminate the reinventions done by he author of the sacred aspects linked to the traditional beliefs of Mozambique. Appropriating and subverting the Standard classic detective novel the symbol of European rationality exaltation the author reinvents within literary sacred animals, rituals of initiation and divination, spirits living among us, as well as divine trees, and shows the reader a different world view and a form of existence from the Eurocentric one. Therefore, there is enlightenment of cultural and social issues from the country where Mia Couto speeks, where the attempt to cultural imposition was operated by years of wars and domination. We based this research, on authors such as Mircea Eliade, Carlos Serrano, Jose Luis gourd, Omar Ribeiro Thomaz, and others, to obtaining the necessary theoretical consistency about the concept of sacred and socio-cultural issues related to Mozambique and other African countries, we rely on authors as Tzvetan Todorov and Ernest Mandel also, to establish the structural pattern and a little bit of the ideology linked to classic detective novel and thus verify the reinvention so on Mozambican soil.

This study aims to analyze the categories set out by Lukács in The theory of the novel. In it, try to control their concepts to facilitate understanding of the genres and literary forms for the young philosopher. Done this way, move on to an analysis of fragmented Notes on Dostoevsky, trying to understand the disturbing end of the theory in which the author states: "Dostoevsky doesn’t wrote a romance at all." It has been with this, in order to lay bare the extent to which aesthetics and ethics are embedded in the thinking of youth Lukács. In addition, we seek to also examine the conjecture exposed in the two works in order to capture the moments of color changes of the novel ways that, for Lukács, will culminate in Dostoevsky's work. This work, which, it seems, the foresee ability the profound changes that have occurred in the twentieth century. Indeed, the work of Dostoevsky - The Brothers Karamazov - will be considered here, based on the concepts exposed by Lukács both in The theory, the in the notes. Try to understand, therefore, as Lukács saw in the work of the Russian writer, a new way that in addition indicated that something in the real world and concrete was changing radically.

Texto completo da fonteThis work aims to perform a critical reading of Jorge Amado’s novel Jubiabá (1935), a work which is part of the project of the proletarian novel undertaken, by the author in the 1930s. We seek an analytical description of the elements that may contribute to the understanding of the internal structure of the work, as well as its position in Amado's literary and political ambitions in them. Thus, we are interested in investigating the relationship between the literary form of Jubiabá and the social processes which the work refers to, especially with regard to the left-wing ideas in relation to the historical changes in the organization of labor in Brazil, seeking to understand how the aesthetic aspect of the novel clarifies the author’s position. With the aesthetic aspect in mind, we paid particular attention to the construction of the plot, the composition of the leading character, and the narrator’s profile in relation to the whole of the work's structure, as well as in relation to one another. This paper concludes with an interpretation of the dynamics established between the work and the Brazilian social formative tradition in its specificities as a nation on the periphery of world capitalism, in its symbolic, material, literary, and extra-literary proximities to the center of the civilized Western world.

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis aims at investigating Lucia Miguel Pereiras reading of Virginia Woolf in four of her articles, Dualidade de Virginia Woolf, Crítica e feminismo, O Big Ben e o carrilhão fantasista, and Assombração, in which she explores key aspects of the English writers essays and novels. According to Lucia Miguel Pereira, Woolfs essays are formally innovative and her renewal of the form distinguishes her from her predecessors and contemporaries. Such differences are reinforced by the simultaneous use of narrative and critical language, which raises the essay to status of an artistic creation, capable of involving the reader by means of an interaction and closeness which Pereira names as a humanistic approach. However, Pereira considers Woolfs explanations of her aesthetics, which include myth and feminism, as resulting much more from her very personal stance than as literary criticism as such. As for fictional time, taking up Lucia Miguel Pereiras suggestion about the necessary interaction between chronological and psychological time in the novel, we compare To the lighthouse and Mrs. Dalloway, by Virginia Woolf, and Amanhecer, by the Brazilian novelist, in order to demonstrate how both writers deal with temporality in the novel, bearing in mind Woolfs aesthetic proposal and the Brazilian critics point of view.

Texto completo da fonteLa Coscienza di Zeno is Italo Svevos most elaborate novel, and deserves a place among the great works of the early 20th century literature. Svevos truly modern novel elects the irony as its formal principle. The ironical mechanism, linked to the romantic matrix of the concept, establishes a series of contradictions, ambiguities and negative reconfigurations which reveals the novels fails and limitations. Thus, the traditional notion of the novel as genre is deconstructed and formally re-elaborated, trough a negative and self-reflexive gesture dear to the tradition of the early 20th century literature. La Coscienza di Zeno aims initially to configure the totality of ones life, but its course ironically reveals the opposite, the fragmentary character of life, whose total unification is nothing but sham. The strongest ironic trace lies in the fact that its exactly through the novels critical deconstruction that Svevo´s work reconquers the capacity to represent, negatively, the reality.
Lente, Sandra van. "Cultural exchange in selected contemporary British novels". Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät II, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/17133.
Texto completo da fonteThis thesis analyses representations of cultural exchange in contemporary British novels in the context of migration and the British literary field. It offers a multilayered approach: the combination of cultural exchange theory and its categories with narratological tools do justice to the aesthetic side of the novels as well as their socio-political and historical contexts that are particularly relevant for novels dealing with migration. Cultural exchange theory analyses appropriation and transformation processes, i.e. how the concepts, cultural practices as well as representations change when they are transferred into a different cultural context. Furthermore, this thesis takes into consideration that all novels exist as material objects within a literary field that is affected by editors, marketing people, reviewers, and other agents. The results support the following theses: Contact and exchange are implicitly and explicitly depicted as something positive, with two of the novels emphasising the virtues of selective appropriation. However, the exchange processes mainly work in one direction only and contact between (British) Asian and (white) British characters is limited. The blame for this is often put on the immigrants and their families. The selected texts focus on obstacles and conflicts in exchange processes without offering solutions to the conflicts. In this context, religion or religious fervour along with a lack of education are most often depicted as the main obstacle for reciprocal cultural exchange. The aesthetic means employed are analysed as well as their effects, e.g. whether form and content reinforce each other or produce contradictions. Finally, the thesis shows which novels deconstruct and contradict existing stereotypes and which ones are complicit in reproducing them. Primary texts: Monica Ali’s Brick Lane (2003), Nadeem Aslam’s Maps for Lost Lovers (2004), Gautam Malkani’s Londonstani (2006) and Maggie Gee’s The White Family (2002).

Texto completo da fonteIn this work we aim to show that the different historical experiences by Henrique de Carvalho (Expedição Portugueza ao Muantiânvua: Ethnographia e história tradicional dos povos da Lunda - 1884-1888) (1890), Castro Soromenho (Lueji Ilunga na terra da amizade) (1945) and Pepetela (Lueji: o nascimento dum império) (1989) define certain literary forms, respectively, travel literature, tension short story and novel. These three distinct literary forms are connected with historiographic writings, for Castro Soromenho and Pepetela appropriate Henrique de Carvalho text to elaborate their central plots which focus the space of Lunda. Having in mind that space potentializes the three narratives, in this study we will take into consideration that \"The literary form cannot be understood separate from the content, and neither is it independent from the nature of the subject and the proceedings which are conditioned by this same content. Form depends on the content, and also on the particular aspects of the subject and on the elaboration it implies.\"* (Bakhtin, M. 1992, p.206)

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis consists of a critical study about Machado de Assis\'s Quincas Borba, supporting the main hypothesis that the protagonist\'s psychic crisis corresponds to the complexity of the novel\'s form. In this novel, a versatile narrative voice portrays a \"split\" character whose trajectory culminates in madness, and death. In Brazil\'s literary scene, Machado de Assis was in search of fictional modalities to suit his artistic profile, having produced a disquieting work that defied the schemes set out by Romanticism and Naturalism (PASSOS, 2007). Furthermore, the crisis of the character and the questioning of the novel\'s form can be associated with the compositional crisis faced by the author during the writing process of Quincas Borba. The novel has been rewritten, resulting in differences between the serial version, published in A Estação (1886-1891), and the book version (1891). We analyse these variants focusing on the use that the author makes of free indirect speech in the representation of characters\'s inner self, including the protagonist. We aim to consider how Rubião\'s consciousness fragmentation is carried out by the narrator, and to understand the meaning of the rapport established among this form of fragmentation and other elements in the novel. This research will, therefore, analyse the means of portraying a character in the midst of psychic disintegration in a work whose very writing process was especially problematic.

Texto completo da fonteThis research proposes, based on Deleuze and Guattari’s philosophy, a rhizomatic reading of the historical novel Amar-te a ti nem sei se com carícias (2004), by the Paranaense writer Wilson Bueno. By reviewing the most relevant theoretical tendencies related to the fictional genre (HUTCHEON, 1991; MENTON, 1993;ESTEVES, 2010), I criticize the didacticism found in these theories. By the mapping of the incipient criticism works of Bueno’s novel, I present a deviation related to these preview works, aiming at a concept of literature closer to the cathartic and deterritorialization function of the esthetic text. To do that, I try to define the historical novel specificity, describing it as a private manifestation of the historical social imagination (BANN, 1994) that puts into practice images from the past (ANKERSMIT, 2001). In this perspective, however, the literary writing is characterized by the way a writer disconnects these images from the past and puts his reader in touch with a non-place, making it possible, through the use of language, a hollowing out experience. To promote this reading, I make use of rhizomatic perception of the literary phenomenon, such as Deleuze and Guattari present it in Mil Platôs (2011), identifying, in the novel, lines of hard, molecular and abstract segmentarity. So, I understand the images from the past to be mobilized in the fiction as components of the novel’s hard segmentarity line, placing, as a next step, the literary resources that work with what Deleuze and Guattary named quantums of deterritorialization. But if the fiction historical meaning is affected by the molecular segmentarity line, it is in the abstract segmentarity line that, with greater intensity, it disappears and leaves room for a dive in the other of all worlds (BLANCHOT, 1997; LEVY, 2011). Thus I identify the moment of the novel’s abstract segmentarity line when everything takes place in terms of a savage and implacable present. The abstract segmentarity line makes the historical novel an experiment about the limits of a historically determined society, showing the possible fissures on the subjectivity wall from a past time, deforming History, promoting the contact with its hollowing out.

Texto completo da fonteThe novels by E. L. Doctorow studied here draw a critically illuminating panorama of American History in the 20th century. In The Book of Daniel, we follow the trajectory of the American Left from the thirties up to the sixties. In Ragtime, the historical scenery is the Belle Époque and the ragtime era, from the beginning of the century up to World War I. In Homer & Langley, the time frame is broadened to include almost the entire century from World War I up to de eighties. In those novels, we find a dialectical relationship between the impulse to bring forth connections and represent a larger social and historical picture, and the difficulty of achieving such a project through the very language and logic of fragmentation which obstructs the making of articulations and renders representation difficult. In this work, I try to read the ambiguities and hesitations of the form in those three novels as productive uncertainties potential lessons to contemporary critical thinking. Novels such as Ragtime, The Book of Daniel e Homer & Langley are animated more by a hermeneutics of the concrete than by a poetics of relativity. The analysis of the representational strategies those novels employ to depict the historical material from which they are made shows how those narratives reinvigorate the historical novel today
Fear, Alan Peter. "A search for identity and memory in Sharon Kay Penman's novel Here be dragons". reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/159108.
Texto completo da fonteWales, as a nation in itself, has to some extent been forgotten and absorbed into the general history and culture of the United Kingdom, which for the most part, is dominated by England and “English” values. Welsh identity, or indeed any national identity, is a construct of many determining factors, not the least of which are historical events. In this dissertation, I present my reading of the historical novel, Here Be Dragons by American author Sharon Kay Penman, in order to explore and analyze the question of Welsh national identity and to examine how the concept of Welshness is configured in this fictional universe. This work is also a personal search and exploration into Welsh identity and memory, as I was brought up and educated through an English educational system – in Wales – which excluded a greater part of Welsh history, language and values from the curriculum. The novel covers a late medieval period of between 1183 and 1234, during which Wales struggles to maintain its unique identity and culture against the greater power of the empire-building Anglo-Norman kings and barons. As this dissertation concerns a historical novel, in order to better understand the relationship between a history narrative and a historical-novel fictional narrative, an outline of historiography and a background to the genre of the historical novel are important. Furthermore, a description of the historical background of Wales is necessary, not only to give us an idea of the formation of the Welsh identity, but also to place the novel into its correct historical context. The dissertation is divided into three parts. In part one, I examine the concepts of national and cultural identity and memory and the cultural and historical aspects which form the identity of Wales. I have used the works of Anthony D. Smith, professor of Ethnicity and Nationalism at the London School of Economics as a theoretical basis for the concepts of national and cultural identity. Part two, which deals with history, is divided into three sub-sections. In the first sub-section I examine and briefly outline historiography, how history is studied and presented. The second sub-section deals with the historical novel, how it developed as a literary genre and its relationship with the history narrative. The final sub-section is a historical background to Wales in order to have a better understanding of Welsh identity. Part three of the dissertation is my reading of Here Be Dragons, in which I examine the construction of Welsh identity in the narrative in the principal characters and the symbols that represent Wales in the descriptions of landscapes and medieval structures such as castles and manor houses. To conclude, I present my final considerations of the processes which have led to the eradication and the consequent search to restore a Welsh national identity. Thus, I believe I am fulfilling my part in this process that is so well represented in Sharon Kay Penman’s novel Here Be Dragons.

The purposes of this study were to investigate the motives (perceived reality) and circumstances about junior high school girl students for reading romance novels, the differences of their attitude of both sexes (including attitude of love, gender role, and sex) on the basis of reading conditions and background variables, and the relationship between their perceived reality for reading romance novels and their attitude of both sexes. This study used stratified random sampling questionnaires to investigate junior high school girl students of Pingtung County with 574 effective samples out of 660. Besides, the survey tools were “ Survey on circumstances of reading romance novels”, “Scale of perceived reality for reading romance novels”, and “Scale of the attitude of both sexes” that were self-made. The data available from the surveys was analyzed by descriptive statistics, Dependent Samples T-Test, square, One-Way MANOVA, and Pearson product-moment correlation. The conclusions were drew as follows: 1. Most of junior high school girl students started reading romance novels at the beginning of puberty. Most of them had no opinions about book’s classification of romance novels, but a lot of them were potential opponents. 2. Most of junior high school girl students had the experiences of reading romance novels, but only a few of them were indulged in them. The students with different background variables differed in their reading conditions of romance novels. 3. On the perceived reality for reading romance novels, junior high school girl students generally inclined to “entertainment” most, but to “instruction” least. The students with different reading conditions and background variables differed in their perceived reality for reading romance novels. 4. On the attitude of love, junior high school girl students generally inclined to “friendship love”, “pragmative love” and “romantic love”, instead of ”altruistic love” and “game playing love”. The students with different reading conditions and background variables differed in their attitude of love. 5.The gender role attitude of junior high school girl students generally was not inflexible, but the students with different background variables differed in their attitude of gender role. 6. There were some reverse phenomena on the gender role attitude of the students with different reading conditions, but most of the dimensions of their perceived reality for reading romance novels had significant positive correlation with the dimensions of their gender role attitude. We shouldn’t be too optimistic and careless about the reading conditions of them. 7. The sex attitude of junior high school girl students generally was conservative, but there were some differences among the students with different background variables. All of the dimensions of their perceived reality for reading romance novels had significant positive correlation with the dimensions of their sex attitude. Finally, according to these conclusions, this study provided the families, the schools, the society, and the future studies with some advices.
Martins, Margarida Pereira. "The search for identity and the construction of an idea of India in the novels The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy and The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai". Doctoral thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/26045.
