Abstract
 This article discusses the basic character of the Roman liturgy and examines what the original Roman liturgical rite is that can serve as a standard for the Roman liturgical rites. Discussion about the authenticity of the Roman rites often lead to endless debate and create difficulties in practical matters when some of the rites are applied to liturgical celebrations. The analysis of the authenticity of the Roman rite in this paper will be based on the views of Edmund Bishop, an English liturgical historian. Besides using a historical approach, this article will also use a biblical study approach in exploring the basic characteristics of the Catholic liturgy, especially the Eucharist, so that a celebration of the Eucharistic liturgy can be said to be good. The views of several exegetes such as Brevard S. Childs (Old Testament) and Joachim Jeremias and Xavier Leon-Dufour (New Testament) will be used to analyze the biblical texts, especially regarding the story of the celebration of the Jewish Passover, Exodus and the story of the Last Supper in connection with the Eucharist. And, of course the opinions of contemporary liturgical historians such as Paul F. Bradshaw and John Maxwell are also very important here in order to discover the relevance of this study today.

What is a photisterion? Translators usually render the Greek word phōtistērion (site of illumination) as ‘baptistery’ (site of immersion in water). This article reopens the study of phōtistēria, arguing that being ‘immersed’ or ‘illuminated’ evokes different senses of the concomitant meaning of the sites and rites of initiation. It situates late ancient phōtistēria from epigraphic and literary sources in their theological and liturgical contexts. The evidence from Galilee, Syria, Jordan and Cyprus corroborates the idea that many Christians of late antiquity preferred ‘illumination’ to express the composite rite of initiation in a phōtistērion, within which ‘baptism’ was one part.

Emily Dickinson, as the enigmatic anti-Madonna of American verse, presides over a Eucharistic micro-drama by suggesting that Words-as-spoken are a sacramental Food. Her repeated tokens of Crumb and Berry are the ritual components of Bread and Wine compressed into nubs, exiles from a collective Loaf and Vine. Dickinson never “took” the public rite of Communion, but performs her own private counter-version via her poems, where “famishing” is used as a progressive verb and “Starvation” is treated as an honorific state. Dickinson’s speaker nibbles at a non-communal crouton in several poems, favoring the nub of a crumb to the risen, levitated Loaf.

The paper examines the reproduction peculiarities of action, real-object and verbal elements of family rituals in the context of artistic style; the specifics of the artistic representation of the family rituals of Transcarpathians in connection with the personality of M. Dochynets himself as an implicit narrator has been traced; semantic and word-forming and etymological analysis of ceremonial names has been carried out as well. The family rituals of Transcarpathians are artistically reproduced in the short stories “Circus”, “Ant in Amber”, “Domestic Bird” (birth ceremony); “Black Angel”, “Wax Rings” (funeral rite); “Mother’s Bread” (wedding ceremony). Family rituals in M. Dochynets’s works are represented both through artistic images and the prism of philosophical, traditional folk and religious ideas of the author himself as an implicit narrator. The picture of his artistic world reproduces the peculiarities of the national Ukrainian worldview and world consideration. Action elements of family rites are most vividly reproduced, including washing and dressing of the deceased, night vigil near the deceased, wedding invitations, gift giving to the young, etc. In most of them, pagan and Christian traditions are closely intertwined, fixed in the mental consciousness of Transcarpathians. The specificity of the real-object plan of family rites in M. Dochynets’s novel is the reflection of mystical, symbolic features formed on the basis of mythical and religious ideas of the people. The verbal context of the family rituals of the analyzed collection is represented mainly by lexemes and occasionally by phrasemes. By origin, these are mostly Ukrainian proper names with Proto-Slavic roots and a few borrowings. Most of the ceremonial nominations are the words of Ukrainian origin used mostly in the literary language, with the exception of a few dialectical words (sváyba, krúzhmo, uprovíd, dérevúsche). Symbolic meaning is inherent in such names as soul, candle, cross, wax rings, etc.

Abstract: Semiotic construction has an enormous influence on the latest studies in promoting intercultural communication. Understanding all symbols of traditional rites and fostering mutual respect, compassion, sympathy and empathy for other cultures is understood as a new angle. Moreover, semiotic construction is a contact tool for cultural qualities. This research aims to explore and reveal the multicultural values that are contained in the Tiba Meka rite. The analysis examines 50 custom spokespersons over the period of February to December 2019 and uses interviews, stationery collection, field notes and audio-visual recordings. Three research results concerning the Tiba Meka rite were found. First, semiotic meanings used in Tiba Meka rites are semiotic expressions that invite national or international outsiders, government guests, religious leaders and community leaders. Second, the philosophy relates to the theory, personality and morality of economics behind semiotic spoken words. This philosophy is influenced by the following main philosophies: pragmatism and indoctrism. Third, the Tiba Meka rite’s multicultural values include respect, gender, politics, solidarity, faith, tolerance, political, social, economic, authority and familiarity, and these values promote intercultural communication. The six steps used by the Manggarai people to welcome outsiders include these concepts.

People have developed ceremonies and rituals to help make sense or celebrate an alteration in position, circumstance or relationship. However, over time some have become diluted or rejected for whom they are intended. In majority of cultures, the greatest effort is given to the death rite of passage– and yet paradoxically it is the one that is now most often distorted or lost. This study attempted to describe the multiple aspects of changes that are occurring in Gurung death rite. Gurungs are followers of ‘Bonism’ but they are under the profound influence of Tibetan Mahayani Lamaism. Gurung community is changing from Mechanical to Organic Solidarity in which the Mechanical Unity of their traditional culture is transforming to loosely united Organic Solidarity of body. Gurung death rites have been influenced by many rudiments--migration, urbanization and modernization due to which there has been the emergence of deformed usages and behaviors in death rite. Urbanization impact on death rite is closely linked to modernization and the sociological process of rationalization, a speedy and historic transformation of Gurung social roots whereby predominantly rural Gurung culture is being rapidly modified by urban ostentatious culture. However, there is very vital element of unity, cooperation, sympathy and we feeling among the Gurungs owing to death rite that has tied all Gurungs under a shared and endorsed bond. It has created a reciprocal relationship between the living and dead-- both depending upon each other. Death rituals have been a means of co-ordination creating solidarity through ‘Syaisyai’ which is a social institution for uniting the Gurungs. This bond between giver and gift, the act of giving creates a social bond in Gurung community with an obligation to reciprocate on part of the recipient.

The article analyzes dialectal parallels in the corpus of nominations and folk beliefs of thematic group of childbirth rite vocabulary of Western and Eastern Podilian dialects, which are marginal in relation to the core of the speech. It was noted that in the nomination of childbirth rite of Eastern and Western areas of Podilian dialect, the most frequent is the lexical nomination, expressed by substantives and substantivized attributes, attributive word combinations.
 For each lexical-semantic group, characteristic principles of nomination are defined, in particular, the most productive in both studied areas are: lexical-semantic group of women’s names: action → action figure; age, action → person’s name; number of childbirths → person. Lexical-semantic group of children’s names: action → child’s name; age → child’s name. Lexical-semantic group names of other ritual participants: action, ritual function → doer; actor rank → doer. Lexical-semantic group names of rites: action → name of the rite.
 Most of the lexemes that serve the childbirth rite are known in the dialects of both areas, which confirms their belonging to the Podil dialect, some lexemes recorded in the Western Podil dialects indicate the proximity of these dialects to other dialects of the southwestern dialect of the Ukrainian language.
 In the dialects of both studied areas, there is approximately the same system of prohibitions for a pregnant woman and a newborn child, which is expressed at the syntactic level in the design of complex sentences and the use of various subordinating conjunctions. Cultural texts reflect the phonetic systems of Western and Eastern Podil dialects.

This study examines the nature of the funeral rites of “Gulbongjeongchwalto” presented in the story “Garakgukgi” from the Samgukeusa. “Garakgukgi” is the mythical story of the birth of the ‘Su-ro’. Since myths are transmitted along with rituals, the character and meaning of the myths of aqueducts can be understood concretely only when the ritualistic aspects appearing in the myths of aqueducts are clearly identified. In “Garakgukgi,” the portion pertaining to the birth of “Su-ro” is subdivided into two parts: before and after the birth of Su-ro. The birth of Su-ro signifies the emergence of a new king, while simultaneously signifying the death of the former ruler. In other words, the birth of Su-ro in “Garakgukgi”contains two events: the rite for the birth of a new king and the funeral rites of the former ruler. This is also illustrated through the placement of the tomb of the ancient ruler, “Jiseokmyo,” above that of “Gujibong,” and the rite for the birth of a Su-ro being performed on Gujibong. In this study, folklore materials handed down until today were used to investigate the characteristics of the funeral rites of “Gulbongjeongchwalto.” First, we examined the relationship between the custom of “Jejeol” and “Gulbongjeongchwalto” among the funeral methods handed down in Jeju Island today. Second, we discovered the tradition of singing and dancing to pray for the birth of a new life in the funeral process through the “Dasiraegi”, a funeral method in Jindo where the ancient funeral method called “double funeral” is handed down. “Gulbongjeongchwalto” and “Gujiga” performances consist of praying for the birth of descendants and the transmission of sacredness, raising the possibility that it would be passed down to future generations.

Based on ethnographic notes of the late XIX – early XX centuries, as well as modern author's field data collected in the Hutsul region, various individual (thirds, ninths, forties, anniversaries) and calendar (Christmas and New Year, Easter periods and «wonderful») are considered Saturdays) funeral services, common among locals. In this investigation, funeral rites are analyzed through the prism of action, agency, subject and motivational and semantic components. The study found that most Hutsul funeral services are based on a pious attitude towards the dead, as well as ancient manistic motivations. Most of the funeral rites and beliefs preserved among the inhabitants of the Hutsul region are marked by syncretism and reduction, as during their existence they absorbed both archaic and later Christian or modern components. A significant number of the funeral services considered are connected with the Christian-church tradition, which is reflected in the organization of funeral services, appropriate meals, readings of the Psalms. At the same time, among the Hutsuls there are ancient funeral rites, which include collective treats of symbolic cereals, feasts on the graves, as well as the gift of a certain sacrifice «for the soul» of the dead. Consideration of the many beliefs and rites associated with manistic endowments has shown that such practices are based on the reception of agents involved in the rite by symbolic representatives of the dead on earth, while the very procedure of endowing a particular object involves its mediation to the afterlife as a victim. In this context, the status of assimilation to the dead is given to the poor, widows, widowers, the elderly and children. An important element of Hutsul funeral rites are also other manistic rites, among which stand out «calling», «feeding», «drinking», «warming» souls. In general, these rites are an important feature of the cult of ancestors, as they perform a clear gilastic function: they are designed to honor and appease deceased relatives, so that they are the patrons of their descendants during the economic and production year.Key words: Hutsul region, Hutsuls, dead, funeral rites, manistic motives

Introduction. Nowadays lay Buddhist rites pertaining to everyday life and dealing with community, group, family, individual and household causes are viable, needed, and productive enough. Goals. The study aims at revealing most stable household / family rites of the Buryats and determining their essentials and features. Methods. Traditional classification and systematization methods have proved instrumental in identifying stable and changeable properties, local features of family / household rites across various Buddhist ethnic groups in Buryatia. The method of comparative historical analysis serves to define the actual processes of preserving and transforming life cycle rites. Those of observation, interview, and interrogation make it possible to characterize the present-day religious consciousness of lay Buddhists and reveal certain changes in traditional Buryat attitudes and customs that emerged due to historical processes to have yielded some formal peculiarities of basic rituals and rites. The paper pays special attention to the revived everyday rite of sangaril. Results. Field data show that cult practices have preserved only what is best remembered without books and experts, i.e. what is familiar since olden times, most common, and requires no high theological qualifications — if there is a significant loss of the bookish tradition, and in the absence of Buddhist ritual experts of Tibetan origin. So, those are everyday rites most closely connected with folk customs and dealing with economic and household needs of believers that prove most persistent. In other words, what is most closely connected with everyday life does survive and exist. Conclusions. Traditional family and everyday rites, such as oboo, sangaril, maani, funeral and Sagaalgan-related ones (New Year), collective worshipping of sahiusan-protectors for family well-being, are currently perceived as folk customs and viewed as integral elements of the original Buryat ethnic tradition. To date, those are religious ideas and beliefs of the public that serve a most characteristic phenomenon in religious life of Buryatia’s Buddhists, rather than activities of the official clergy. Our observations also attest to that religious efforts of believers tend to increase.

A single system design study examined the impact of a Rites of Passage program upon truant, black middle school students. SETCLAE, a model Rites of Passage program was utilized as the intervention. Data were solicited via facilitator’s process notes, questionnaires, and pre and post tests. Baseline and intervention data were compared resulting in a pragmatic reduction of most subjects truancy rate. It was theorized that truant students exposed to their African-American heritage within the school system would result in the students eagerly attending school. The outcome of the program indicated the subjects improved on school attendance and arriving on time.

Previous issue date: 1994<br>Baseada numa literatura densa de The Rites of Passage, de Arnold Van Gennep, esta análise investiga a forte relação entre o padrão tripartido dos ritos de passagem de acordo com Van Gennep e as vidas de dois protagonistas de Richard Wright: Bigger Thomas (Native Son) e Cross Damon (The Outsider). As peculiaridades das vidas de ambos os protagonistas foram estudadas, também, de acordo com a teoria de Houston Baker, Jr. dos "ritos do buraco /todo negro", a qual enfatiza a impossibilidade para o negro consciente de ser reincorporado à sociedade com um novo status, ou com uma nova consciência sobre a sua própria condição na vida. Os três estágios dos ritos de passagem foram também comparativamente estudados lado a lado com a teoria do ciclo do herói de Joseph Campbell.

Sociology has established frameworks for understanding the self as it relates to an array of social spaces and institutional structures - from work and family to organisations and place. However, accounts, interpretations, and readings of subjectivity and processes of self-understanding as they occur in transition, between these spaces (the self in transition), are largely missing from the sociological canon. This thesis attempts to fill that gap by looking at the way individuals construct and maintain work-life narratives on the 'edge' of (or 'in between') those institutional anchors. Based on the transitional stories of twenty individuals who underwent dramatic changes in their careers, the thesis explores the ontological and biographical implications of selfunderstanding as the outcome of transitional experience. My focus is therefore on transition as a biographical process, and how that process (re)opens new frameworks for self-understanding and intrapersonal inquiry. My emphasis is on transition; on individuals' attempts to navigate and negotiate spaces of institutional absence. In Victor Turner's analysis of 'liminal space' (1969), transitional narratives can be understood as taking place within the socio-cultural, and institutional fissures of society. They are thus peripheral to the normative frameworks within which work-life narratives occur- such as notions of 'success', or what it means to have a 'career'. On the institutional 'edge', the individuals who navigate these spaces "arc neither here nor there; they are betwixt and between the positions assigned and arrayed by law, custom, convention, and ceremonial" (furner 1969: 95). At the same time, transitional space is shaped by the socio-cultural expectations normative frameworks provide. In the wake of institutional precedence my interviewees worked through lived experience - such as bereavement, personal illness, and religious discovery- to better understand themselves and the arc of their working-lives. My interviewees' narratives undermine the adequacy and accessibility of normative frameworks for personal biography. They articulated their transitions as attempts to (re)appropriate meaning and fulfilment. Dramatic change was thereby not just a means to a new job or career, but a medium through which issues of personal identity and self-understanding would be challenged and redrawn. In turn, what it meant to 'work' was no longer the sole auspice of productive or remunerative activity, but inclusive of spiritual, political, and interpersonal considerations as well. My interviewees thus employed transitional space as a medium through which to bring together these disparate areas.

Prenant appui sur ma pratique plastique, cette thèse s’est développée en marge mon expérience subjective et vécu avec ma mère spirituelle, tout en étant ancrée dans la problématique de la période contemporaine. En ce sens, l’articulation entre mes œuvres plastiques, le patrimoine ancestral africain et l’art contemporain occidental reste un point central de médiation. De même, celles-ci s’articulent avec la magie africaine et la psychothérapie occidentale dans leur dimension thérapeutique. Ainsi donc, cette thèse intitulée « RITE ET POÉTIQUE DU DON DANS L’ART CONTEMPORAIN - Dépense, Dégoût, Destruction » a pour but d’examiner l’expression artistique du déchirement intérieur de mon histoire personnelle, développer des concepts artistiques de la pratique créatrice singulière. La première partie de la thèse situe mon œuvre poïétique dans le processus d’altérité qui mène à la naissance de concepts dans le champ de l’art contemporain, qui ont tendance à façonner la personnalité comme pédagogie d’intégration de l’apprentissage à l’individu. La seconde porte sur l’immatérialité artistique qui se révèle comme un procédé catalyseur du concept de performance. La troisième partie démontre les procédures plastiques d’aujourd’hui auxquelles l’artiste peut faire face en scrutant l’œuvre ritualisée. La quatrième est une mise en œuvre du vohou vohou comme processus de déconstruction d’une nouvelle identité artistique. Le don comme forme de re-création me permet de faire œuvre dans ma pratique picturale. C’est pourquoi, j’ai toujours revendiqué une dimension spirituelle qui apporte à l’œuvre son champ sacré. Plus proche de Michel-Ange ou de Marx Ernest par ma foi en l’art, je crée une œuvre allégorique, qui affirme efficacement la perte re-créatrice comme langage pictural dans l’art contemporain<br>On the basis of my practice of plastic arts, this thesis developed alongside my subjective experience lived with my spiritual mother, while staying rooted in the problematics of the contemporary era. In this perspective, the meeting place between my works of art, the African ancestral heritage and the western contemporary art stands as a central point of mediation. These meeting elements also go along with the African magic and the western psychotherapy in their therapeutic dimension. Then, this thesis entitled « RITE AND POETICS OF GIFT IN CONTEMPORARY ART - Exhaustion, Disgust, Destruction » aims at examining the artistic expression of my heartrending personal history, and developing artistic concepts of the singular creative practice. The first part of the thesis identifies my poietic work in the process of otherness which leads to the creation of concepts in the field of contemporary art, which concepts tend to shape the personality as pedagogy for the integration of learning by the individual. The second part is about the artistic immateriality which appears as a catalytic process for the concept of performance. The third part exhibits the nowadays plastic procedures the artist can meet by examining a ritualized work. The fourth one is an implementation of the vohou vohou as a process of deconstruction of a new artistic identity. Gift as a form of re-creation enables me to paint. Therefore, I always claim a spiritual side which endows the work of art with a sacred dimension. Admirer of Michel-angel or Marx Ernest through my faith in art, I create an allegorical work, which effeciently affirms the re-creative loss as a painting style in contemporary art

AbstractRitual archery has a long and vital history in Chinese civilization. This chapter examines the current reenactment and digital reconstruction of the specific tradition of the Archery Rites embedded in the Confucian tradition, ritual practice and cosmology of li, which suffered major decline in the twentieth century with modern China’s political upheaval and social shifts. In recent decades, scholars and practitioners in China have sought to revive the lost art of the Archery Rites. The most significant endeavor to date is the “Re-Making of Confucian Rites (RCR),” a major reenactment project based on the renewed philological study of the Book of Etiquette and Rites (Yili), which describes rituals recorded by disciples of Confucius in fifth century BCE. The RCR project is forging the fundamental means to reconstruct and build new archives for the embodied knowledge systems of Confucian rites, through the coupling of reenactment with advanced digital documentation forms, in conjunction with novel interactive and immersive media art experiences for their affective transmission. The approaches arising from this work are building a foundation for the renewed scholarship and societal practice of the Archery Rites, as well as a cohesive framework to address the challenges facing the wider revival of intangible cultural heritage in China today.

The concept Datu mâinii (and the rite) is described in the materials of AEIPC that concerns the wedding rites of some villages of the central part of the Republic of Moldova. Meanwhile, the tradition (and, the lexeme also) of /по|ч›естнe/ ‘the preliminary gifting to bride and groom in the early stage of wedding’ exists among the Bulaestian Ukrainians. The task of the research is the analysis of the term /по|ч›естнe/ and its analogues in the Ukrainian and Romanian areas. The analysis has demonstrated that a kind of semantic interferences between the words [почесне] and частувати exists in the Carpathian-Ukrainian region. And, the closest analogies to the Bulaestian /по|ч›естнe/ adresses us to the South-Podolian Ukrainian dialects. The existence of ritual parallels that are structurally close to the Bulaestian почестнэ, and at the same time are denoted by semantically (and, in some cases, like Romanian cinste, etymologically) similar, albeit different, lexemes in the Romanian area, suggests that the appearance of both a ceremony of почестнэ, as well as the semantic shift in the meaning of this Carpathian-Ukrainian dialectism occurred precisely under the Romanian influence.

During the 1984–1994 excavations on the acropolis in Mytilene, a sanctuary devoted to Demeter from the Late Archaic to the Early Hellenistic period was discovered. A series of five or more altars to the east of the site was excavated, producing approximately 5,000 animal bones. The bones of young sheep, goat and pigs predominated, in contrast with other contemporary Demeter sanctuaries in the Greek world which have yielded a characteristic predominance of pig bones. The sanctuary in Mytilene also produced figurines of Kybele, Isis, Aphrodite and Eros, reflecting the polytheistic nature of this place of worship. These different associations may provide the reason for the high percentage of bovid bones from this sanctuary. A circular ash pit at the western end of the row of altars was found filled with calcined bones of perinatal piglets. The exclusive sacrifice of piglets, particularly in this sanctuary context, is reminiscent of Thesmophoric ritual. Ancient testimonia of the rites of the Thesmophoria are examined in this paper, and compared to the faunal evidence in order to reconstruct the ancient ritual that took place on the acropolis in Mytilene. Special attention is paid to the timing of the placement of the piglets in the megara prior to their offering on the altar.

The study was realized on the basis of a special questionnaire developed by the author. The survey was conducted in places with a dense population of the Lipovans in the Republic of Moldova. Childbirth rituals, consisting of three stages (prenatal, birth and postnatal) are associated with the moments of transition. The objects of the transition are the woman in labor and the infant. In traditional culture, childbirth is perceived as an analogue of death, associated with danger and ritual impurity. A woman in labor has a dual meaning: a being that contains the potential for reproduction and, at the same time, entails a threat that lies in the sphere of the other world. Indirectly, the midwife, who is the conductor between this world and the other world, is also involved in this. Up to now, the Lipovans are distinguished by the isolation of mother and baby after childbirth until a special prayer. The existing idea of the “impurity” of the unbaptized infant determined a specific behavior towards him: he could not be placed in a cradle before baptism, be hung a cross around the neck, be put a shirt or a belt on (this can be observed even today). Rites of passage, in traditional culture, are seen as tools for maintaining social order in a community.

The presentation will give a brief overview of climate change science. Bubbles of air, trapped in ice, show that temperatures have risen and fallen with the level of carbon dioxide in the air for the past 800,000 years. A dramatic rise in fossil fuel use since the 19th century has led to record levels of carbon dioxide in the air. At the same time the average world temperature has risen by about 1° C. Further rises are likely to disrupt weather patterns and many countries and organizations have declared the goal of reaching 'net zero' emissions by 2050 or even sooner. The vegetable oil industry can contribute by energy saving measures and by the use of oil in making biofuels but the current world production of vegetable oil is only about 200 million tonnes per year compared with over 4 billion tonnes of petroleum. Vegetable oil crops are very efficient using only 6% of global farming land and providing not only oil but large amounts of protein. The oil palm and soybean industries have both been criticized for causing deforestation but their impact has been relatively small compared with some other types of farming.

Maintenance management is an important function under Facilities Management (FM). Industries moved to preventive maintenance models to counteract the inefficiencies of reactive maintenance and further evolved into predictive maintenance (PdM) models. The demand for Industry 4.0 enabled PdM for FM has risen as a result of the industrial revolution and the dynamic nature of the FM functions. Thus, the study aimed to investigate the applicability, benefits, and challenges of applying Industry 4.0 concept for effective PdM in FM. The qualitative research approach was undertaken to accomplish the aim. A comprehensive literature review followed by 15 semi-structured interviews was carried out with experts in the maintenance sector who have Industry 4.0 knowledge. The data was collected from experts in Australia, Qatar, Dubai, Singapore, and Sri Lanka, and analysed through code-based content analysis using NVivo 12. The results demonstrate that there is a huge potential for using Industry 4.0 smart technologies such as big data analytics, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), autonomous robots, Cloud Computing, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), cybersecurity, Machine Learning (ML), Augmented Reality (AR), Data Mining (DM), system integration, and simulation for PdM under FM. Applying Industry 4.0 concept for effective PdM under FM provides significant benefits such as the deployment of a zero-failure strategy, establishment of machine-to-machine communication and interaction, detection of early anomalies and extended equipment lifetime. Lack of technological knowledge, capital, data management, employees’ interest, integration between systems, standardized procedures, and internet access are identified key challenges.

It was reported by Meyer and Dietzman (1979) that world annual production of heavy crude oil was about five percent of other oil produced. They forecast that heavy crude oil production would increase. Canadian heavy oil production cumulative to 1979 was reported to be 197 million barrels. By 1996 Canadian daily production levels have risen to the levels shown in Table 1, with annual production of heavy oil and bitumen exceeding cumulative totals produced to 1979.

Introduction: Musculoskeletal disorder can result from extreme physical demands at work. It has risen, mainly due to high muscle demands and static postures and generates a significant economic burden to the companies. This short review aims to point out the statistics of the most affected body parts by work-related musculoskeletal disorders, assess absenteeism and presenteeism costs, and evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions. Methodology: According to the PRISMA Statement, the search was performed in 5 electronic databases (Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, Pubmed). Articles selection was made by the title and abstract analysis, especially those aiming to explain and validate the subject. If the abstract fulfils the objective, the articles were read, and studies were considered that met the defined eligibility criteria. Were chosen articles that realised measurements or considered interventions in healthy human beings, especially in the working population, dated from 2015 to 2020. Results and Discussion: The scrutinised articles were conclusive that the most affected part of the body are the upper limbs, the neck and the upper back. The statistics ofthe affected workers varied according to the country and analysed tasks, but they converge concerning the most affected body parts. It could be noted that women are more affected by musculoskeletal disorders than men, especially older women; the reason, however, is not clearly explained. Muscle injury can lead high economic burden, mostly due to absenteeism and presenteeism. It was noted that the expenditure due to presenteeism is higher comparing to absenteeism in both developed and emergent countries. Conclusions: Due to high costs, companies are deploying strategies to improve work conditions and aware the workers about health and safety. Interventions have shown to be effective in reducing the risk of injuries. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders canbe extremely damaging to the workers’ health and are costly to the companies. Support supervisor interventions effectively improve work conditions and reduce the risk of damaging outcomes, increasing workers’ health, work ability, and, consequently, productivity.

One of the most significant hurdles for true commercialization is affordability of the ceramic composite combustor liners. To study the manufacturing costs for CFCC liners, a study was conducted to identify cost items and relationships. This report describes the effort, identifies the high impact areas of manufacturing costs, and recommends potential approaches to reducing the manufacturing costs.

World military expenditure rose by 3.7 per cent in real terms in 2022, to reach a record high of $2240 billion. Global spending grew by 19 per cent over the decade 2013–22 and has risen every year since 2015. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a major driver of the growth in spending in 2022. Military expenditure in Europe rose by 13 per cent during the year, which was the largest annual increase in total European spending in the post-cold war era. The exceptional growth was largely accounted for by substantial increases in Russian and Ukrainian spending, but many other European countries boosted their military budgets in 2022. Spending increases in parts of Asia and Oceania also contributed to the global growth in 2022. This SIPRI Fact Sheet examines key regional and national military expenditure data for 2022 and trends over the decade 2013–22. The data, which replaces all military spending data previously published by SIPRI, comes from the updated SIPRI Military Expenditure Database.

2016 will surely be the hottest year since records began in the 19th century. The increase will be very close to the target set in the Paris Agreement to avoid an increase in global temperature by 1.5 °C. Average temperaturesin 2016 have risen to 1.2 °C above what they were before the industrial revolution. The dilemma facing the world today, in view of these data, becomes even more urgent: How to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels, accepting that their demand will continue to exist in the coming decades? In the energy sector, many solutions have been proposed to completely replace fossil fuels for electricity generation, such as massive deployment of renewable energy generation and increased energy efficiency. There are many restrictions, however, to achieve this result in the medium term, ranging from technological limitations in the massive deployment of energy efficiency and renewable energies, to the political economy of countries that are unlikely to reduce their oil production And carboniferous as long as demand exists. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) offers an alternative to mitigate CO2 emissions from fossil fuel power plants, considering that, given current and future energy needs, the operation of these plants will continue in the coming years. CAC could mitigate up to 90% of the carbon dioxide emitted by the use of fossil fuels in electricity generation and industrial processes. Additionally, the use of CAC with renewable biomass is one of the few carbon reduction technologies that can be used in a "carbon-negative" mode. If biomass from fuelwood crops were used, carbon could be absorbed and simultaneously generate electricity. CCS, therefore, is a viable alternative to solve the dilemma of reducing emissions while satisfying the growing energy needs of the world.

This report summarizes the results from the fifteenth year of a national public opinion survey asking U.S. adults questions related to their views on federal transportation taxes. A nationally representative sample of 2,522 respondents completed the online survey from February 7 to March 12, 2024. The questions test public opinions about raising the federal gas tax rate, replacing the federal gas tax with a new mileage fee, and imposing a mileage fee just on commercial travel. In addition to asking directly about support for these tax options, the survey collected data on respondents’ views on the quality of their local transportation system, their priorities for federal transportation spending, their knowledge about gas taxes, their views on privacy and equity matters related to mileage fees, travel behavior, and sociodemographic characteristics. Key findings include that large majorities supported transportation improvements across modes and wanted to see the federal government work towards making the transportation system well maintained, safe, and equitable, as well as to reduce the system’s impact on climate change. Findings related to gas taxes include that only 2% of respondents knew that the federal gas tax rate had not been raised in more than 20 years, and 74% of respondents supported increasing the federal gas tax by 10 cents per gallon if the revenue would be dedicated to maintenance. With respect to mileage fees, several options tested received support from more than half of respondents. Also, the majority of respondents supported variable mileage fee rate structure options; 62% preferred charging low-income drivers a reduced mileage fee rate, and 52% preferred charging electric vehicles at a lower rate than gas and diesel vehicles. The analysis of trends across the survey series, which has run annually from 2010 to 2024, shows that support for both higher gas taxes and a hypothetical new mileage fee has risen slowly but steadily.

This report summarizes the results from the fourteenth year of a national public opinion survey asking U.S. adults questions related to their views on federal transportation taxes. A nationally representative sample of 2,531 respondents completed the online survey from February 13 to March 23, 2023. The questions test public opinions about raising the federal gas tax rate, replacing the federal gas tax with a new mileage fee, and imposing a mileage fee just on commercial travel. In addition to asking directly about support for these tax options, the survey collected data on respondents’ views on the quality of their local transportation system, their priorities for federal transportation spending, their knowledge about gas taxes, their views on privacy and equity matters related to mileage fees, travel behavior, and sociodemographic characteristics. Key findings include that large majorities supported transportation improvements across modes and wanted to see the federal government work towards making the transportation system well maintained, safe, and equitable, as well as to reduce the system’s impact on climate change. Findings related to gas taxes include that only 2% of respondents knew that the federal gas tax rate had not been raised in more than 20 years, and 70% of respondents supported increasing the federal gas tax by 10 cents per gallon if the revenue would be dedicated to maintenance or safety. With respect to mileage fees, around half of respondents supported some form of mileage fee, whether that was assessed on all travel or just on commercial travel. Also, the majority of respondents supported variable rate structure options that included 62% who supported charging low-income drivers a reduced mileage fee rate and 52% who thought electric vehicles should pay a lower rate than gas and diesel vehicles. The analysis of trends across the survey series, which has run annually from 2010 to 2023, shows that support for both higher gas taxes and a hypothetical new mileage fee has risen slowly but steadily.
