This paper inspected entrepreneurship skills as a panacea for economic sustainability for retirees. Prospective retirees should be engaged with entrepreneurship at retirement, to offer them alternative income at retirement as this is very important owing to the difficult economic condition in our country today. In Nigeria today many retirees are at crossroads due to the absence of entrepreneurial skills, they need to re-engage themselves after retirement especially when they are still strong and have families to take care of. Acquiredentrepreneurship skills after retirement will help to make the retirees active, pursue their passion, and supplement their source of income. Studies have revealed that the average retiree will have some health challenges after a few years of retirement such as heart disease, stroke arthritis, and depression. Staying motivated, active, and connected is the best means to combat health challenges due to aging. Having a skill will go a long way in solving this issue. This study however focused on four entrepreneurship skills which include risk-taking/adaptation skills, creative thinking skills, record keeping skills, and administrative skills. The research recommended that Public servants and prospective retirees ought to see life beyond the daily routine of their jobs and endeavor to acquire entrepreneurial skills such as risk-taking/adaptation, creative thinking, record keeping, and administrative skill in getting ready for the rainy day, Pre-retirement entrepreneurship skill development plan should be highly encouraged in public service by the government, non-governmental organizations and others.

This study examines the positive impact of Javanese Gamelan training activities on retired Javanese migrants in East Lombok. The main focus of the research is on strengthening cultural identity, the effectiveness of training activities, contributions to education and self-development, and designing holistic social activity programs. Active participation in traditional arts, especially Javanese Gamelan, positively impacts participants' psychological well-being, strengthens their sense of cultural identity, and improves life quality in retirement. The activity not only develops cultural and artistic skills but also creates strong social networks and a sense of togetherness, reducing the risk of social isolation. This holistic approach includes active cultural arts education and skill development through Gamelan training. The research highlights the importance of understanding different cultural backgrounds and the challenges of maintaining cultural heritage and designing inclusive and supportive programs. Additionally, social activity programs are directed toward meeting participants' psychological, social, and emotional needs, creating an experience that goes beyond mere physical activity. Overall results indicate that integrating cultural arts activities with a holistic approach can have a significant positive impact on cultural identity, psychological well-being, and retirees' quality of life. Besides, social activities, particularly Gamelan training, are deemed essential for enhancing retirees' physical and mental well-being and helping them adapt to new roles post-retirement. Social and cultural activities, especially those related to traditional arts, play a crucial role in supporting retirees, preserving culture, and creating mutually supportive communities.

ABSTRACTThe economic participation rates of older men have fallen dramatically over the last decade. Early retirements have accounted for much although not all of this reduction and yet early retirement has been a somewhat neglected aspect of the social scientific literature. Initially the prerogative of managers and white-collar workers, early retirement has spread to wider sections of the work force and has generally been seen by managers and trade unions as an uncontentious way of achieving ‘headcount reduction'. Research into the experiences of early retirees is sparse but such survey data as does exist suggests relatively high levels of satisfaction. This paper presents some of the findings of a small, qualitative study of the experience of early retirement from the chemical industry of a sample of 40 men from the West Riding of Yorkshire. An attempt was made to construct a quality-of-life index with which to compare and contrast their experiences and investigate some of the major factors in determining the outcome of early retirement. The paper highlights the role of further paid work in enabling healthy men with marketable skills to effectively negotiate their own ‘flexible retirements’. Those with ill health and a lack of skills were unable to do this and these factors were associated with a relatively low quality of life.

Retirement from sport is a life transition that has significant implications for athletes’ physical and mental health, as well as their social and professional development. Although extensive work has been done to review the retirement experiences of athletes, relatively less work has been done to examine and reflect on this expansive body of literature with a pragmatic aim of deciding what needs to happen to better support retiring athletes. This study used scoping review methodology to review current academic reviews, gray literature articles, and support programs on athletic retirement. This review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute reviewer’s manual guide on scoping reviews and adhered to the PRISMA-ScR checklist. Academic articles were identified from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Scopus. Gray literature articles and support programs were identified using advanced Google searches. This study identified 23 academic reviews, 44 gray literature articles, and 15 support programs. Generally, the results suggest that athletic retirement encompasses a drastic shift in identity, a loss of social networks, a lack of career ambitions, and potential risks to physical and mental health. While there was a gap in the academic literature regarding practical strategies to support retiring athletes, the gray literature suggests many creative ideas. Stepwise programming may be beneficial to help athletes: (a) make sense of their athletic experience and see retirement as an ongoing process; (b) develop a well-rounded sense of self identity and understand how to apply their unique skills and strengths in new ways; (3) gain control over their retirement transition by establishing a clear plan and adjusting to new routines and opportunities; and (4) normalize the transition experience by “living in the next” and building confidence in new life directions. Future research may benefit from developing and evaluating more programming to support athletes through the retirement transition.

This research is based on the hypothesis that music education, based on active participation, can improve the quality of life of older people and positively influence the prevention of dementias, such as Alzheimer's. Choir singing has always brought benefits, but active choral singing, including movement and body expression, as well as instrumental practice, can increase a healthy physical and mental life. Music for life is a project that takes place in an association of pensioners and retirees in a small town, in Spain. Participants go once a week to sing, actively learn music, but what they really do is work the laterality of the cerebral hemispheres, boost memory, improve self-esteem, and connect with people of similar characteristics and situations. One of the most important parts of the project is public auditions in homes for the elderly or similar, as part of musical learning, self-esteem and social responsibility. The idea of being able to show other people their musical work, and offer a few hours of joy to older people, makes them feel important and necessary. The research part consists of checking whether these connected activities (singing, corporal expression and memorization), favor the prevention of dementias such as Alzheimer’s; improve psychomotor skills and the quality of life of people. At the moment, we have only been able to verify the increase in self-esteem, and the implication involved in participating in a research project.

Soft skills have a significant role in the development of the student's overall personality, thereby potentially enhancing their career prospect. In the context of teaching and learning, soft skills can be exposed integrally through the process of teaching and learning Islamic religious beliefs and values (PAI). This is based on the paradigm that teaching PAI ideally does not merely focus on how to achieve a good grade in doing the test, but also guides them to internalize the virtues for their soft skills development (good heart). Moreover, being good at number crunching and scoring high skills in the subject are not the only criteria for success in professional and personal life. For this reason, integrating soft skills into teaching PAI would help students to build and improve their skills, especially in interaction and the effective use of Islamic values. This paper highlights some strategies for developing students’ soft skills in teaching PAI. The discussion specifically is directed to the strategy of developing soft skills into personal skills in classroom technique.

ABSTRACTThis paper explores the embodied dimensions of computer and internet use in later life, and examines how technology use relates to constructions and experiences of the ageing body. It is argued that previous research on technology use and embodiment has neglected older bodies, in contrast to research on gender and disability. Furthermore, while earlier theorisations presented internet use as disembodied, it is argued that the experience of using such technologies is grounded in our embodiment. In the light of these limitations and arguments for more complete theories of the body, this paper explores how technology use relates to various aspects of embodiment. These issues are examined in the light of data from qualitative interviews and time-use diaries completed by retirees in 17 households in the United Kingdom. By examining the ‘technobiographies’ of these older computer users, it is shown that changes in body techniques are prompted and in some cases required by broader cultural and technological change. The findings evince the process of acquiring computing skills as an embodied competency, and as a form of ‘practical knowledge’ that can only be ‘learned by doing’. These experiences of technology use were embedded within constructions and experiences of ageing bodies. Although the participants drew on discourses of ageing in complex ways, their coding of computer technologies in terms of the competences of youth often reproduced hierarchies between young and old bodies.

Islamic children's education adopts a holistic approach encompassing spiritual, intellectual, social, and moral dimensions. Rooted in the Quran and Hadith, it aims to cultivate individuals who adhere to divine teachings, exhibit exemplary character, and actively contribute to society. Central to this process are parents, who serve as primary guides and role models for their children. Furthermore, Islam advocates for the acquisition of practical knowledge and skills relevant to daily life. Emphasizing the significance of a nurturing environment, Islamic education underscores the consistent practice of Islamic values. Through this framework, Islam perceives children's education as a means to nurture a generation characterized by integrity and accountability, capable of meaningful societal engagement and attaining fulfillment both in this life and the hereafter.

The article analyzes the role of a university museum in the formation of students’ vocational skills. The author highlights that it is essential that students should solve pedagogical problems which are equivalent to those they will have to solve in real life. Applied tasks should be relevant and enable students to apply their professional knowledge in real-world environments. The article maintains that a university museum can help solve the aforementioned task. The author singles out a range of varied activities that enable students to accumulate sufficient applied experience: hosting excursions, providing master-classes on interactive museum software to schoolchildren, designing leaflets and display stands. Such activities enable students to gain initial vocational experiences and collect their portfolios which can later come in handy during the job-hunting process. To illustrate such activities, the article describes work of volunteer tour guides of the Time Machine team of Ryazan State University named for S. Yesenin, outlines the principles of their performance and the structure of the team.

Abstract Villages help older neighbors age-in-place as they manage their environments, take advantage of opportunities for social and civic engagement, and improve or maintain health and well-being. National surveys repeatedly indicate that older adults prefer community living as long as possible. But communities change, and post-retirement living may require rebuilding social connections with old and new neighbors. Fortunately, today’s retirees bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to later life which they are happy to share. Drawing on the talents and career experiences of older adults in Center City, Philadelphia, Penn’s Village (PV) was created in 2007 to address the needs and wishes of neighbors wanting to stay in their own homes as they aged. A member of the Village-to-Village Network, PV (a 501c3) has itself matured through board development, strategic planning, and member engagement. In reframing aging in Center City, PV currently offers its over 300 members and volunteers an array of educational and recreational programs (e.g., talks, affinity groups, social events and outings); services (including transportation, home repairs, IT support, companionship, accompaniment to medical appointments), and opportunities to use their personal knowledge and skills to help their neighbors-- as drivers, companions, volunteer staff and co-chairs/members of committees (e.g., Board of Directors, Program, Welcoming, Marketing & Communications, Finance, Fundraising). In FY2019, volunteers provided nearly 1200 services to PV members. Our most recent survey responses indicate that 82% of volunteers found their work highly meaningful and 79% of those who received services believed their quality of life was greatly improved.

The teacher leader creates a path through which the students achieve their valued outcomes (high education performance). The qualitative content analysis was used in the investigation. The application of correct inference and interpretation in qualitative content analysis allows for the raw data into manageable themes. 10 participants were recruited in the study. Each interview conducted in their own office in the school. Semi-structured interviews were done based on the general questions asked with the key informants. This set of interview guides were evaluated twice by two experts in qualitative research. All interviews were recorded and then transcribed by the researcher. Seven themes emerged in this study: questing for quality education through continuous involvement in curriculum development, nurturing an empowering and inspiring school climate, leveraging partnerships, networks and linkages with the various stakeholders, exemplifying good leadership skills, amplifying open and clear communication, developing systematic process of classroom observation and setting attainable standards outcomes and expectations for students and teachers. This study revealed the actions of teacher leaders working at Quirino National High School about teacher leadership skills and their best practices. The seven themes show that teacher leaders are highly motivated to enhance student achievement. Stakeholders in education should place significant emphasis on promoting classroom teacher leadership. Thus, education administrators should design effective strategies to ensure that the current crop of teachers understands the importance and role of teacher leaders. By reflecting on these practices, teachers will be inspired to become teacher leaders in their own field.

Objective- Reveal the strategies teachers use in improving Arabic communication skills among learners. This is important to do considering that the ability of students in Islamic boarding schools in Arabic is often not found a balance between ability in grammatical aspects and communication skills. Design / Methodology / Qualitative- Approach is used as a research method, this is because data and typical do not require statistical analysis. The research was carried out at the Daruttawhid Jambur Mandailing Natal Islamic Boarding School. The research informants were Arabic teachers and purposively selected learners. Data are collected by observation techniques, interviews and documentation studies, the data that has been collected are analyzed interactively. Findings- The results of the study found that to improve the communication skills of Arabic students at Daruttawhid Jambur Islamic boarding school, the use of Arabic does not only take place in the classroom, but the teacher also guides and directs students to make Arabic a communication tool in life in the Islamic boarding school environment. Keywords: Communication Skills, learning strategies, language activities. Teachers use communicative strategies in improving Arabic communication skills, namely making Arabic a communication tool in formal learning and daily life. Research Limitations/Implications- Researchers have not conducted trials of the strategies used by Arabic teachers. Therefore, the next research or subsequent researchers can conduct studies on these aspects. The implication of the findings of this study is that the combination of grammatical knowledge that is the strength of pesantren can be balanced with the use of daily Arabic, so that students have communication skills.

Man, as a social being, needs a behavioral repertoire that guides his relations in society. This varied set of behaviors is called social skills, and can be learned throughout the life cycle. People with neurodevelopmental disorder have a deficit in social relationships as a prominent symptom, requiring reinforcing spaces that enable the construction of a socially skilled behavioral repertoire. Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has aroused the interest of several areas, however, the focus of studies remains in childhood. This study aimed to investigate possibilities of intervention with adults diagnosed with ASD, as a tool for social skills training (SST), a systematic attempt to teach strategies and interpersonal skills in order to improve the quality of the interactions that permeate interpersonal relationships. The methodology was based on a systematic review in the Virtual Health Library, by using the uni-terms “social skills”, “adults”, “autism”. Included were productions available in full, which presented interventions with adults with ASD and the development of social skills. The studies resulting from this selection were fully analyzed. The results discuss the effectiveness of interventions with this population for the development of social skills. It is concluded that SST is a possibility of effective intervention with atypical adults.

In order for students to be able to use the acquired knowledge in everyday life and follow the principles of a healthy lifestyle, it is necessary to form their beliefs and corresponding valeological skills. In this regard, it is necessary to teach students self-observation, analyze their actions and lifestyle from the point of view of their impact on health, assess the functional state of their body and individual organ systems, and carry out health-improving activities. Moving from conflicted situation between one’s own roles and life experiences to the synergy allows people to have greater awareness of their personal resources and to apply them in all areas of their lives. But how does this happen, in what way? How do people experience it? This is the question and objective behind the MAAM project. The research uncovers how digital innovation can build new bridges between people’s life experiences and the workplace. The research starts from the experience of motherhood, which is paradoxical in its nature – on one hand unleashes energy, strength and competencies in the woman, on the other hand it is often perceived as a condition of fragility (physical, psychological) and is not recognized as a bearer of skills at the workplace. The MAAM project is scientifically based on theories such as role accumulation, positive spillover, generativity, experiential learning and enriches them with two original views: life-based learning, that postulates that life is in itself one of the richest learning sources, and transilience, a meta-competence that identifies people’s ability to actively bring resources and skills from one life domain to another and vice versa. This is an action-research project, with the aim to investigate and simultaneously activate the development of personal resources and soft skills in people. This objective is achieved through an innovative digital platform that guides the woman in a process of self-reflection and awareness on different topics: the relationship with her identity and her own desires; the caretaking experience with the child and other people; the ways of listening, observing and empathizing and the consequences towards herself, others and the environment; the dynamics of delegation and decision making; the discovery of own “superpowers” and the reflection on the changes taking place. The research summarizes the results of the digital platform for the first 19 months and has been focused on mothers’ experience. It has the aim of investigating the impact of motherhood on the personal development and the soft skills of the women, highlighting which resources are active, which behaviours are adopted, how women perceive their roles and deal with the changes that comes with maternity. This is part of a broader framework, which has been starting to investigate / activate personal development and soft skills in fathers and whose aim is to investigate how caretaking activities trigger people’s personal development and embed them with soft skills that can be used in every area of life, including workplace.

233 Background: Interventions to enhance couples’ communication about cancer-related issues can lead to benefits for patients, spouses, and their relationships. We recently conducted a pilot study testing a couples communication skills training (CCST) intervention targeted to couples in which one partner had advanced GI cancer, a population who may need particular help addressing difficult and emotionally-laden topics related to life-limiting illness. Results of quantitative analyses suggested that the intervention was effective in improving relationship satisfaction for these couples. The objective of the current study was to analyze intervention session conversation content to identify themes that couples addressed spontaneously, with the ultimate goal of determining whether an intervention that more specifically guides couples to discuss issues related to end of life and the life-limiting nature of the patient’s illness would be acceptable. Methods: 12 couples (10 male and 2 female patients and their spouses) completed the 6 session CCST intervention which provided training in communication skills for sharing thoughts and feelings and making decisions, and gave couples the opportunity to use these skills to discuss cancer-related issues of their choosing. We conducted qualitative content analysis of the 72 audio-recorded sessions, and coded common and recurrent topics raised by patients and spouses. In addition to identifying breadth of topics, we used theme frequency as an initial gauge of theme importance and acceptability. Results: The most common themes identified were prognosis, treatment, emotional intimacy, completion, spouse’s life after the death of the patient, roles, communication, sublimating needs, emotional support, and family. These represent themes previously identified as important to patients at end of life, as well as themes unique to dyads in intimate relationships. Conclusions: These findings support the feasibility of conducting an intervention that combines training in communication skills with guidance for using these skills to discuss topics that are potentially most meaningful to couples facing advanced illness.

The European project entitled "Integrating adults and the elderly towards a Europe of knowledge", coordinated by the University of Almería, within the actions of "Grundtvig learning partnerships for adult education", has carried out the assessment of an educational program for people over 55 years in five countries. The aim of the learning partnership was “to encourage the development of innovative practices in education of older people and their transfer between countries”. Methods: Some of the following teaching tools and methods were used to promote intercultural communication skills: simulation activities, followed by reflective discussion and/or written analysis; guided group activities; local visits to contact people from other countries; ethnographic projects. Results: The courses provide knowledge and understanding about culture, institutions and different ways of life in diverse communities, and encourage reflection about their own cultural behaviour, practices and attitudes, as well as those of others. Old people enhance communication in their community, by means of meetings in which they talk about their common concerns. This can help the elderly to overcome problems and reduce feelings of loneliness. The courses also help old people acquire new knowledge and skills in a rapidly changing world. Conclusions: Participants’ motivation increased as the sessions were developed, since the contents of the classes agreed with their own interests, with a constant widening of knowledge. Everybody had an active role in the discussions. This training has shown some aspects about ageing, such as the removal of the image of the idle retired person; at the same time it promotes active retirement, intergenerational relationships and independence, and improves social and personal skills

In addition to content knowledge, it is necessary to teach learning skills. Using relevant learning skills assures better learning outcomes and abilities for the whole life course. Due to a packed curriculum or teachers having insufficient skills, student learning skills are often neglected. The aim of this study is to find out whether it is possible to support the development of declarative knowledge in learning skills in teachers through procedural knowledge acquired via practical teaching activities. A quasi-experimental study using semi-structured pre- and post-intervention interviews and six-month intervention activities was conducted with 14 teachers. The procedural knowledge of the teachers was assessed based on their practical experience with the intervention activities. Their declarative knowledge was assessed based on pre- and post-intervention interview reflections. The findings revealed that procedural knowledge, being predominantly teacher centred, mostly appears through experience and reflections on the teaching practice that guides them. It also appeared that the intervention focusing on advancing procedural knowledge among teachers advanced their declarative knowledge in terms of metacognition, revealing new aspects of motivation and sense-giving for their learning. As follow-up research, we plan to continue studying conditional knowledge in teachers in order to identify situations where this is applied.

Abstract With much of the world experiencing population aging and a strong need—and desire—among many approaching later life to work longer than past norms, individuals and institutions are experimenting with new ways of working. Yet given the complexities of navigating the work environment in later life, including aspects of cumulative (dis)advantage that help or hinder one’s work prospects, the pull to socially impactful work in the nonprofit sector, and the day-to-day experience of such work in later life, outcomes from this work can vary. Consequently, this symposium will focus on the challenges and opportunities of working longer and their relevance to a productive aging model. The first paper will provide a framework for engaging in the conversation on productive engagement in later life. It will give particular consideration to older workers with lower levels of socioeconomic status in OECD countries. The second paper will discuss results from more than 1,400 surveys of fellows and organizational hosts that have participated in the Encore Fellowships Network, which matches mid- and late-career workers (typically corporate retirees) to non-profit organizations seeking their skills and experience. The third and final paper will reveal findings from an experience sampling methods study of two groups of older adults over the age of 60: founders or leaders of social purpose organizations, and older volunteers. We will conclude by facilitating a discussion on ideas for future scholarship on longer working lives, with particular emphasis on individuals with less advantage as well as those pursuing social purpose work.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of clinically credible skill practice and assessment guides for intraosseous (IO) needle insertion and laryngeal mask airway (LMA) insertion as two essential components of advanced life support (ALS) training. Design/methodology/approach A modified Delphi approach was used to determine expert consensus in the application of IO and LMA devices for the pre-hospital and emergency setting. Nine pre-hospital clinical specialists were recruited to participate in this Delphi study to determine consensus of clinical expert practice. Findings Two rounds were required to obtain a performance and assessment checklist for each skill. Both lists were then further modified to maximise their useability. However, the development of a “validated” checklist using a pre-determined process such as a Delphi approach is challenged. Rather, the implementation of these tools in a stated context, and analysis of the data they generate, is an essential aspect of validation which the Delphi approach does not address. Research limitations/implications Participant feedback regarding the rationale for their scores was limited in this study in order to minimise participant input and maximise completion of all rounds of the study. Further, devices used in the study may no longer be first-line choices with the advent of more modern devices including semi-automatic IO devices and LMAs which do not have inflatable cuffs. The refined checklists are able to be adapted to these newer devices. Practical implications Pre-hospital education contexts which may not have access to expert assessors who are skilled in providing global judgements now have access to clinically relevant skill-specific assessment tools for IO and LMA insertion. Originality/value Worldwide, ALS accreditation and competence is demanded of countless health professionals, and to date, validated practice and assessment guides specifically developed for the emergency setting for which they are used, are not available in the published literature. This paper proposes to fill that gap, in addition to guiding clinical education researchers in strategies to develop valid assessment tools through rigorous critique.

New approaches for teaching and assessing scientific inquiry and practices are essential for guiding students to make the informed decisions required of an increasingly complex and global society. The Science Skills approach described here guides students to develop an understanding of the experimental skills required to perform a scientific investigation. An individual teacher's investigation of the strategies and tools she designed to promote scientific inquiry in her classroom is outlined. This teacher-driven action research in the high school biology classroom presents a simple study design that allowed for reciprocal testing of two simultaneous treatments, one that aimed to guide students to use vocabulary to identify and describe different scientific practices they were using in their investigations—for example, hypothesizing, data analysis, or use of controls—and another that focused on scientific collaboration. A knowledge integration (KI) rubric was designed to measure how students integrated their ideas about the skills and practices necessary for scientific inquiry. KI scores revealed that student understanding of scientific inquiry increased significantly after receiving instruction and using assessment tools aimed at promoting development of specific inquiry skills. General strategies for doing classroom-based action research in a straightforward and practical way are discussed, as are implications for teaching and evaluating introductory life sciences courses at the undergraduate level.

AbstractThe Brazilian Sea Turtle Conservation Programme (TAMAR) was established in 1980 to protect sea turtles in Brazil and to re-establish their natural life cycle, which had been disrupted by humans. The programme is based on grassroots involvement by the coastal communities, and provides jobs and generates alternative sources of income. Within this framework, the mini-guides programme was created. It consists of a summer training course in which local children between 8 and 13 years old learn basic information about marine ecosystems and sea turtles, strategies to promote their conservation, and skills to interact effectively with tourists. After the course, children are given onsite experience by working as interns at the TAMAR visitor centre at Praia do Forte, on schedules designed to avoid conflicts with their studies at school. The children work closely with tourists, informing them about sea turtles and TAMAR's work; they also help the biologists in field activities. In this way, they enhance their own awareness, and by extension their families' and the community's concern about environmental conservation. Their involvement provides them not only with valuable skills, but also an extra source of income, thereby providing economic benefits to their families. The success of this programme is indicated by the excellent approval ratings given by the tourists visiting the area.

Literacy activities in Indonesia are intensively developed to form literate citizens. Literacy is defined as a basic ability to develop individual potential in achieving goals. One of the literacies developed is numeracy literacy, which was coined in 2017. Numerical literacy is a branch of mathematical literacy. This ability guides individuals to recognize the role of numeracy competencies in everyday life. The knowledge of numeracy literacy is an urgent need for students. The student at least has received numeracy literacy development. This study aims to describe numeracy literacy in the field and compare numeracy literacy targets with reality in the area. The research method is descriptive quantitative. The data collection technique used a test with a research instrument of numeracy literacy skills and used non-test data, namely observation, and open interview guidelines. The research findings show that the students' numeracy literacy skills are still in the poor category. Numeracy literacy has not been developed in the implementation of the Gerakan Literasi Sekolah (GLS). Basic literacy activities have not been implemented properly.

Abstract In contemporary Poland, Universities of the Third Age are the most visible institutional forms of active aging. These lifelong-learning institutions that are specifically for retirees often cultivate ideals of independence through workshops and classes that teach new, and potentially transformative, skills and hobbies (Kobylarek, 2018). Universities of the Third Age in Poland emerged out of the fields of andragogy, pedagogy, and social work, fields that have regional intellectual roots in the late 19th/early 20th-century presocialist era, and are based on radically different ideals of personhood, relationality, and care than those of the contemporary postsocialist neoliberal era (Robbins, 2021). This paper analyzes 1) historical data from institutional archives of two Universities of the Third Age in Poland, and 2) secondary sources on histories of andragogy, pedagogy, and social work, to create a locally grounded intellectual history of active aging in central and eastern Europe. The Polish case offers an opportunity to think across divergent political-economic eras, in which assumptions about the value of a person to society have shifted. By tracing how the fields of andragogy, pedagogy, and social work have shaped active aging in Poland, this paper finds that 1) dichotomies of East/West, socialist/capitalist, and individual/collective are insufficient to explain the history of contemporary practices of active aging, and 2) intellectual history can reveal complex relations between political-economic change, and ideals and practices of aging. These findings have implications for advancing gerontological theories of 1) active aging in cross-cultural contexts, and 2) how active aging relates to sociopolitical change.

To best understand the changing nature of labour markets and how they function, it is necessary to base our analysis on both the empirical evidence and appropriate theoretical frameworks. This is particularly so as theory is about real-life situations and enhances our understanding of how the world around us works and changes. Theory also guides inquiry into social questions for a better understanding of how they can be resolved. With this in mind, this paper examines the findings of the Human Sciences Research Council’s (HSRC) Labour Market Intelligence Partnership (LMIP) studies, and specifically the 2016 report on Skills Supply and Demand in South Africa. This it does through the deployment of the contemporary labour market theories. In doing so, lessons for the maritime sector, which is presently seeking to implement its skills planning and employment creation plans, are discussed. The paper finds that while the LMIP lays foundation for future skills planning, its analysis is, however, not explicitly and adequately anchored into contemporary labour market theories. This is a major shortcoming as these theories alert us to issues that LMIP is not adequately giving attention to, i.e., the socially structured and segmented nature of the labour markets under the competitive pressures of globalisation and technological changes.

Colleges of agriculture in the US have been challenged to produce candidates prepared with the knowledge, skills, and disposition to engage in a global agricultural industry. Studies show that one of the most influential factors in secondary student perceptions and outlook is their secondary teachers. The adult learning theory of transformative learning by Mezirow indicates a process of making a new or revised interpretation of the meaning of an experience, which guides subsequent understanding, appreciation, and action that is anchored in life experience. To have the most impact, experiences should be grounded in a context that students can relate. Nineteen teacher candidates participated in a course with a short term study abroad component that was grounded in global school-based agricultural education. Students were administered a researcher-developed instrument measuring knowledge, skills and dispositions of global competency three times: round I -prior to the course, round II -after the course prior to the travel experience, and round III after the travel experience. Findings indicated substantial, sustained change in the candidate knowledge, candidate perceptions of knowledge, candidate perceptions of skills, and candidate perceptions of dispositions related to global competency. Further research is recommended to measure impact on practice in the secondary agriscience classroom.

Among all the language skills, writing is one of the neglected skills; nevertheless, it is mostly abused in terms of its use as a key activity during “performance tasks”. This study devises a guide in writing among learners and motivates to improve their writing skills that recount the daily life’s experiences, thoughts, and feelings concerning to local and global concerns. A phenomenological research design was utilized and 36 participants were selected according to the qualifications’ set that undergone through Inclusion and exclusion process. Writing outputs were collected, analyzed, coded, categorized through the content analysis and the thematic approach; themes from these narratives were emerged. Semi-structured interview and focused-group discussion (FGD) were conducted to ensure the veracity and appropriateness of the guide question through a priori code. From this, guides were laid out according to style with a focus on foreshadowing, plot twist, revelation, unexpected events, flashback, red herring, Deus ex machine, characterization, diction, syntax, tone, voice, and a combination of the kinds of communication with narratives on the lead. Results revealed that personal narratives as a pedagogical intervention for learners when guided accordingly and taken with utmost care and confidentiality provide fluidity in the creation of ideas and concepts, development of learners’ logical and critical thinking, and develop the ability to reason out. Biomechanics is the field of study that examines different physical characteristics of the human body combined with the principles of Newtonian mechanics. This discipline requires competency in algebra, trigonometry, and physics, which is particularly challenging for many students pursuing an undergraduate degree in kinesiology. This paper presents the development and implementation of a biomechanics instructional approach for kinesiology undergraduate students using active-experimental learning sections. Focused on integrating acquired knowledge and applied real-life examples via hands-on experiences, the students work in small groups to complete five lab activities and a final project. Lab activities are designed to match concepts in the lectures as well as advance students’ skills in data collection, processing, and analysis. These active and experimental learning approaches offer students the opportunity to gain occupational experience by collecting data and estimating kinematic and kinetic parameters. Students also critically interpret data and gain a solid understanding of methods used to improve the performer's movements. Throughout the semester, students demonstrate improvements in their critical thinking abilities and proficiency in using dedicated biomechanical software and hardware through a series of increasingly challenging lab activities. They also apply the learned skills in their final project, where they choose and analyze a unique movement for injury prevention and/or performance improvement. In conclusion, the progressive arrangement of these activities successfully guides students to practice and apply their data collection and analytical skills to human movement analysis.

Objectives: Researchers sought to investigate how spousal relationships of employees affect the management of employment commitments and social life responsibilities during the coronavirus pandemic within a state university. Specifically, researchers desired to explore how employees struggled with work-life balance during covid-19 pandemic, ascertain any work-life balance benefits brought about by the covid-19 pandemic among host organisation employees and measure differences between marital status and level of work-life balance of employees. Methods: The study was anchored on multi-methodology research conceptualization, embedded research design, and critical realism paradigm. A sample size of 40 research subjects selected through a controlled quota sampling method was used for the study. Correspondingly, primary data was collected using a semi-structured interview guide and structured questionnaire. The main data analytical tools used were inferential statistics and thematic headings. Results: Available evidence from the study indicates that participants struggled to balance employment commitments and social life responsibilities during the coronavirus pandemic. Telecommuting resources were scarce and stumbling blocks in professional development efforts were faced. The study also revealed that the pandemic helped research subjects to improve their digital skills in the workplace. Conclusions: Given the above observational evidence, the management of the host organization might need to offer sufficient telecommuting resources and a policy framework that guides such flexible work arrangements. A holistic picture of the subject matter can also be understood through a longitudinal study design with a bigger sample size.
