AbstractVarious properties of continuity for the class of lower semicontinuous convex functions are considered and dual characterizations are established. In particular, it is shown that the restriction of a lower semicontinuous convex function to its domain (respectively, domain of subdifferentiability) is continuous if and only if its subdifferential is strongly cyclically monotone (respectively, σ-cyclically monotone).

In 1992, Ramadan introduced the concept of a smooth topological space and relativeness between smooth topological space and fuzzy topological space in Chang's (1968) view points. In this paper we give a new definition of smooth topological space. This definition can be considered as a generalization of the smooth topological space which was given by Ramadan. Some general properties such as relative smooth continuity and relative smooth compactness are studied.

The Noun Phrase Accessibility Hierarchy cannot explain the difference in relativizability between Chinese and Korean in authentic discourse. Korean exhibits a higher preference for relativization compared to Chinese and this article aims to account for this difference from the perspective of topic continuity. Specifically, the continuity of head nouns within relative clauses is stronger in Korean than in Chinese. By analyzing the parameters of referential distance and potential interference, this study finds that the head nouns in Korean relative clauses display a broader range on the continuum of continuity compared to those in Chinese relative clauses. Furthermore, the difference in the strength of continuity of head nouns between Chinese and Korean relative clauses is attributed to the typological distinction between the Component-Integral Languages and Component-Metonymic Languages postulated within the framework of the Event-Domain Cognitive Model.

Disagreement has persisted in the modeling of Fickian moisture diffusion in sandwich structures as to the correct continuity conditions at the core/facesheet interface. The purpose of the present work is to compare moisture diffusion predictions based on two of the most widely used sets of these continuity conditions. The model problem of one-dimensional time-dependent moisture diffusion in a symmetric sandwich slab is selected for analysis. Finite difference numerical solutions reveal very little difference between the predictions of models assuming continuity of relative humidity and continuity of relative concentration over a wide variety of parametric conditions.

AbstractThis paper introduces, as an alternative to the (absolutely) lawless sequences of Kreisel and Troelstra, a notion of choice sequence lawless with respect to a given class of lawlike sequences. For countable , the class of -lawless sequences is comeager in the sense of Baire. If a particular well-ordered class of sequences, generated by iterating definability over the continuum, is countable then the -lawless sequences satisfy the axiom of open data and the continuity principle for functions from lawless to lawlike sequences, but fail to satisfy Troelstra's extension principle. Classical reasoning is used.

The concept of Relative Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RRAIM) using time differential carrier phase measurements is investigated in this paper. The precision of carrier phase measurements allows for mitigation of integrity hazards by implementing RRAIM monitors with tight thresholds without significantly affecting continuity. In order to avoid the need for cycle ambiguity resolution, time differences in carrier phase measurements are used as the basis for detection. In this work, we examine RRAIM within the context of the GNSS Evolutionary Architecture Study (GEAS), which explores potential architectures for aircraft navigation utilizing the satellite signals available in the mid-term future with GPS III. The objectives of the GEAS are focused on system implementations providing worldwide coverage to satisfy LPV-200 operations, and potentially beyond. In this work, we study two different GEAS implementations of RRAIM. General formulas are derived for positioning, fault detection, and protection level generation to meet a given set of integrity and continuity requirements.

This study analyzed the current operational status, business continuity, and business continuity strategies of 11 Soho fashion shopping malls through a longitudinal case study (2019/2020 and 2022/2023). The aim was to determine how Soho fashion shopping malls are continuing their business having been successfully established in the fiercely competitive current online fashion market. Regarding changes in shopping mall operation status, all cases displayed changes in items, distribution channels, marketing channels, core values, and profit structures. After establishing the businesses, a crisis arose due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to difficulties in creating new customers. Moreover, there was excessive business expansion, resulting in saturation of the online platform store market. This meant companies were experiencing reduced sales (5) or difficulties in maintaining their business (3). However, there were differences in the direction of overcoming the crisis and continuing or converting the business. These revealed that to continue the business after successful establishment of an online fashion shopping mall, it is essential to have the expertise of entrepreneurs, work performance, and marketing ability, as well as differentiation capabilities such as product power and management strategy and core competitiveness that provides a relative advantage over other shopping malls. Customized government support at the level of the start-up ecosystem is also essential for the survival and business continuity of a SOHO online fashion shopping mall with poor human and material resources.

3 Background: Previous studies on experienced quality of care and quality of life have not addressed the reciprocal relation between patients and their relatives. For the first time we were able to include almost 700 couples (patient – relative) in a palliative oncological care context. This study aims to assess the experienced quality of care and emotional functioning (EF) of patients with advanced cancer and their relatives, including their reciprocal relation by using a dyadic approach. Methods: A prospective multicentre observational study among patients with advanced cancer and their relatives, recruited from 40 hospitals in the Netherlands or self-enrolled between November 2017 and January 2020 (eQuiPe study). Patients with metastatic cancer and their relatives were eligible to participate. Respondents completed a questionnaire and clinical data of the patient were obtained by linking the information to the Netherlands Cancer Registry (NCR). Logistic regression analyses were performed on baseline data of 1,103 patients and 831 relatives to assess the association between experienced quality of care and EF of patients and relatives separately and across dyads. Results: In total, 1,103 (65%) patients and 831 (71%) relatives completed the baseline questionnaire, including 699 unique patient-relative couples. Patients experienced lower levels of quality of life, including EF, and more symptoms compared to the normative population ( p<.001). Relatives reported even clinically relevantly lower EF compared to patients (69 vs. 78, p<.001) and were less satisfied with care (59 vs. 74; p<.001). Being more satisfied with care in general ( p<.05) and clarity about who their central health care professional ( p<.05) were positively associated with high EF in patients. For relatives, perceived continuity of care ( p<.01) and continuity of information for the patient ( p<.05) were positively associated with high EF. Dyadic analyses showed that EF of patients ( p<.001) and relatives ( p<.001) was positively associated with EF of the other person and perceived continuity of care by relatives was positively associated with high EF in patients ( p<.01). Conclusions: Experienced integral organisation and satisfaction with care in patients and relatives are related to their EF. The additional reciprocal relation between patients’ and their relatives’ EF and the experienced continuity of care suggests the opportunity for a family‐centered approach to optimize advanced cancer care.

In this study we show that family owners of public corporations have greater incentive to preserve the continuity of the firms during financial crisis relative to short-term oriented parties in widely held public corporations. In this regard, we show that during financial crisis family firms report higher performance, experience more financial support from their shareholders, report lower investment cuts, greater level of cash and have lower leverage ratios, relative to non-family firms. These findings are in line with predictions of socioemotional wealth, because show that family owners have greater incentive to retain control over the firm and to preserve the continuity of their firms during financial crisis relative to short-term oriented parties.

Do political and fiscal decentralization make it easier or harder to control inflation? Statistical analysis of average annual inflation rates in a panel of 87 countries in the 1970s and 1980s found no clear relationship between decentralization and the level of inflation. Political decentralization, however, does appear to reduce change in countries' relative inflation rates over time. By creating additional veto players, federal structure may “lock in” existing patterns of monetary policy—whether inflationary or strict. Among the (mostly developed) countries that started with low inflation, inflation tended to increase more slowly in federations than in unitary states. Among the (mostly developing) countries that started with high inflation, inflation tended to increase faster in the federations. There is evidence that political decentralization locks in a country's degree of practical central bank independence—whether high or low—and the relative hardness or softness of budget constraints on subnational governments.

Background: Aldosterone synthase (CYP11B2) antibodies for immunohistochemistry, enables to visualize aldosterone-producing zona glomerulosa (ZG), aldosterone-producing micronodules, and aldosterone-producing adenomas. The architecture of the ZG differs in old versus young age but the evolution of the changes is not well known. The pathogenesis of aldosterone-producing micronodules and aldosterone-producing adenomas is still unclear and research on the ZG in young populations is limited. In this study, we elucidate changes in human ZG with age by quantifying the CYP11B2 expression. Methods: We collected 83 human adrenal glands from 57 autopsy cases aged 0 to 40 years old. In 26 cases, both adrenals were available. We performed immunohistochemistry targeting CYP11B2 and quantified the relative CYP11B2 expressing area, CYP11B2 continuity, the mean gap length between CYP11B2-expressing areas and the maximum extension of CYP11B2 area (depth). Results: We found a negative correlation between age and the relative CYP11B2 expressing area, a negative correlation between age and CYP11B2 continuity, a positive correlation between age and mean gap length, and a positive correlation between age and maximum CYP11B2 depth. The changes in expression patterns of relative CYP11B2 expressing area, CYP11B2 continuity and mean gap length were seen in both adrenals of the same autopsy case. Conclusions: The decline of relative CYP11B2 expressing ZG area and continuity may indicate involution of the ZG, which is supported by an increase of gaps and maximum CYP11B2 depth indicating clustering, comparable to formation of aldosterone-producing micronodules. The similarities in both adrenals from the same case indicate that these changes occur bilaterally.

The P-impedance is one of the most important elastic parameters of rocks, and it is commonly used for reservoir characterization. Conventional P-impedance inversion merges a low-frequency log-based model with a high-frequency seismic-derived model. We have proposed a method to estimate the P-impedance by employing dipole-based matching pursuit (DMP) decomposition. The matching pursuit decomposes the seismic traces into a superposition of scaled wavelets, and the associated scalar information represents the reflectivity series, which can be integrated for P-impedance estimation. Unfortunately, DMP analysis is usually performed trace by trace, resulting in a poor lateral continuity. Applying conventional lateral smoothing through mean or median filtering improves the lateral continuity but typically decreases the vertical resolution. We have evaluated an adaptive smoothing strategy that required the filtering to follow bed boundaries in an automated manner, sharpening the boundaries while maintaining the high quality of inversion. We have determined the effectiveness of our algorithm by first applying it to a synthetic wedge model and then to a real seismic data set.

This paper introduces a rational approach for the design of continuity plates and associated welds in steel special moment frame (SMF) connections. The current AISC Seismic Provisions require welds attaching continuity plates to develop the full strength of the plate, resulting in the need to use complete-joint-penetration (CJP) groove welds. The combination of continuity plate thickness requirements, welding process and weld inspection often leads to costly detailing that may be overly conservative. The proposed design procedure, which is based on the relative flexibility between the column flange and continuity plate, aims to quantify the seismic force demand on continuity plates, thus allowing designers to efficiently size both the continuity plate thickness and the associated welded joints. In addition, the design procedure may allow the use of fillet welds or partial-joint-penetration groove welds as opposed to CJP welds, leading to a more economical design and fabrication. Formulation of the design procedure through analytical studies, including finite element analysis, is outlined.

Abstract Objectives The objective of this study was to identify the association between continuity of ambulatory psychiatric care after hospital discharge among psychiatric patients and readmission, mortality and suicide. Design Nationwide nested case-control study. Settings South Korea. Participants Psychiatric inpatients. Interventions Continuity of psychiatric outpatient care was measured from the time of hospital discharge until readmission or death occurred, using the continuity of care index. Main Outcome Measures Readmission, all-cause mortality and suicides within 1-year post-discharge. Results Of 18 702 psychiatric inpatients in the study, 8022 (42.9%) were readmitted, 355 (1.9%) died, and 108 (0.6%) died by suicide within 1 year after discharge. Compared with the psychiatric inpatients with a high continuity-of-care score, a significant increase in the readmission risk within 1 year after discharge was found in those with medium and low continuity of care scores. An increased risk of all-cause mortality within 1 year after hospital discharge was shown in the patients in the low continuity group, relative to those in the high-continuity group. The risk of suicide within 1 year after hospital discharge was higher in those with medium and low continuity of care than those with high continuity of care. Conclusion The results of this study provide empirical evidence of the importance of continuity of care when designing policies to improve the quality of mental health care, such as increasing patient awareness of the importance of continuity and implementation of policies to promote continuity.

Introduction Continuity of care by family physicians in primary care settings may play a role in reducing health resource utilization and improving clinical outcomes and satisfaction of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Clear evidence on the impact of continuity of care will support clinical programing and integration of services across health settings. Methods The association between continuity of care and unplanned health service utilization in persons with a diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in a rural region in Ontario, Canada was evaluated. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using population-level health administrative data. The main exposure variable was continuity of care. Results A continuity of care index was calculated for patients with at least five visits to a healthcare provider during the 5-year follow-up period ( n = 40,033). Higher continuity of care ( n = 20,008) and lower continuity of care ( n = 20,025), based on the median continuity of care score were calculated. Patients with lower continuity of care had an increased adjusted relative risk of 2.12 (2.08, 2.33) of an emergency department visit, 2.81 (2.72, 2.9) risk of hospitalization, and 3.52 (3.24, 3.82) of being readmitted to hospital compared to those with higher continuity of care. Discussion An association between continuity of care and unplanned health services utilization, where a lower use of unplanned health services was observed in the cohort of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease experiencing higher continuity of care. Continuity of care makes philosophical and social sense in that care is provided by a known provider to a known patient and unnecessary investigations can be avoided.

The paper considers problem of damage and long-term strength of polymeric and composite materials with a ductile-brittle mechanical properties. The modified Maxwell equation written in the scale of the effective time and Boltzmann-Volterra equation of hereditary viscoelasticity are used. Parameter of continuity (of damage) is determined by the relative changes of density, which is an integral measure of the accumulation of structural microdefects in the long process of loading. The kinetic equation for continuity parameter is formulated and interrelated system of equations of creep and damage is analyzed. Analytical relations for creep, continuity parameter and criteria of long-term strength are obtained.

“Good policy” and “good luck” have been identified as two of the possible drivers of the “Great Moderation,” but their relative importance is still widely debated. This paper investigates the role played by equilibrium selection under indeterminacy in the assessment of their relative merits. We contrast the outcomes of counterfactual simulations conditional on the “continuity” selection strategy–largely exploited by the literature–with those obtained with a novel “sign restriction” based strategy. Our results suggest that conclusions achieved under “continuity” are not necessarily robust to the selection of different–still economically sensible–equilibria. According to our simulations, the switch to a hawkish systematic monetary policy may very well induce an increase in output volatility. Hence, our sign restriction–selection strategy “resurrects” the inflation–output policy tradeoff.

ObjectiveTo determine if the choice of methodological elements affects the results in continuity of care studies.DesignThis is a retrospective cohort study. The association between continuity of care and clinical outcome was investigated using the Continuity of Care Index. The association was explored in 12 scenarios based on four definitions of the relative timing of continuity and outcome measurements in three populations (three Ps × four Ts).SettingNational Health Insurance claims from all primary and secondary care facilities in South Korea between 2007 and 2015.ParticipantsParticipants were patients diagnosed with dyslipidaemia, made ≥2 ambulatory visits and were newly prescribed with ≥1 antihyperlipidaemic agent at an ambulatory setting in 2008. Three study populations were defined based on the number of ambulatory visits: 10 084 patients in population 1 (P1), 8454 in population 2 (P2) and 4754 in population 3 (P3).Main outcome measureHospitalisation related to one of the four atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial infarction, stable or unstable angina, ischaemic stroke and transient ischaemic attack.ResultsConcurrent measure of continuity and outcome (T1) showed a significantly higher risk of hospitalisation (adjusted HRs: 2.73–3.07, p<0.0001) in the low continuity of care group, whereas T2, which measured continuity until the outcome occurred, showed no risk difference between the continuity of care groups. T3, which measured continuity as a time-varying variable, had adjusted HRs of 1.31–1.55 (p<0.05), and T4, measuring continuity for a predefined period and measuring outcomes in the remaining period, had adjusted HRs of 1.34–1.46 (p<0.05) in the low continuity of care. Within each temporal relationship, the effect estimates became more substantial as the inclusion criteria became stricter.ConclusionsThe study design in continuity of care studies should be planned carefully because the results are sensitive to the temporal relationship between continuity and outcome and the population selection criteria.

Following a functional view of topic as a discourse, cognitive and contextually-referential notion, independent of special language-systematic coding (Cornish 2004), this paper aims to study topic continuity strategies (Givón 1983, 1995; Dik 1997) in news items and tourist brochures. The empirical analysis carried out reveals that the two subgenres show different relative frequencies of linguistic resources for maintaining topic continuity. While in the news items the use of active voice (25.4%) and anaphoric proforms (20.4%) are the prototypical strategies for topic continuity, in the tourist brochures nominals preceded by definite articles, possessives or demonstratives (24.1%), and proper nouns (12.3%) are the most commonly used resource for maintaining a topical referent alive in the discourse. From a lexico-grammatical perspective significant differences have also been established in the utilization of zero anaphora and nominalizations (the latter being found only in the news items). From a syntactic point of view, the use of relative clauses and passive structures is also distinct in the two text types. Inversions and imperative clauses are exclusive to the tourist brochures. The use of specific linguistic strategies and their different frequencies seem to be basically determined both by the emphasis or semantic prominence the writer wishes to give to the informative segment he is referring to, and by the particular communicative purpose of each of the two subgenres under study.

For nano-positioning systems with piezoelectric actuators used for dynamic grinding control, sinusoidal command signals will used and will give additional problems compared with the commonly used step signals because of the hysteresis effects, which require a good modeling approach. The proposed approach of multiple polynomial regression with first order continuity gives a relative modeling error of 2.65%. The method reduces the error by 26.3-80.2% in comparison with the methods using the single, dual, and multiple polynomial regression with zero order continuity.

Heterogeneity and continuity are two basic traits of geographic space that are also responsible for the problem of spatial uncertainty. In the existing research, heterogeneity and continuity have predominantly been discussed in relation to an analysis of scalar spatial information, i.e. information linked to a single place or a single region. This paper presents a possibility to express the heterogeneity and continuity of geographical space by vector information using methods of functional regional taxonomy. The first objective is to define functional regions in Slovakia based on daily travel-to-work flows (i.e. “crisp” expressions of heterogeneity of space sensu fuzzy set theory). Added value rests in the analyses and cartographic expressions of relative self-containments for resulting functional regions and an orientation of interregional commuting flows. The second objective is to express continuity of space symbolically through an analysis of uncertainty in the resulting system of functional regions.

AbstractVarious studies have dealt more or less directly with qualitative questions concerning social services provided in the home. While as a result of such studies the general characteristics of home services of importance to elderly people are quite well known, this is not the case regarding the relative importance assigned to such characteristics. Personal interviews using the ‘Multiattribute Utility Technology’ (MAUT) were used. This procedure organises the attributes in a ‘tree’ structure for comparing the relative importance & ranking of different quality attributes. A random sample of 180 receivers of home-help services aged 65 to 95 and living in a rural, small town and city area were interviewed. The interviewed persons were asked to rank-order according to personal importance each grouping of quality attributes. The relative values of the different qualities were determined, using a scale with a range from 0 to 100 points. Continuity, especially Staff Continuity, was the most important quality attribute together with Suitability and Personal Relation. Availability and Influence were the least important quality attributes. The characteristics studied had largely the same relative importance for all older people, irrespective of category.

Objectives: To estimate the relative importance to patients of continuity of care compared with other aspects of a primary care consultation. Methods: We carried out a discrete choice experiment in Leicestershire and London on a stratified random sample of 646 community dwelling adults taken from general practitioner (GP) registers, plus 20 interviews with Punjabi, Urdu and Gujarati speakers. The attributes examined were: the type of professional consulted, relational continuity, informational continuity and access. Results: Individuals' values changed according to their reason for making a primary care consultation. If consulting for minor familiar symptoms, individuals would be prepared to trade off one extra day's wait to see a GP rather than a nurse, 0.9 days for relational continuity, and 1.6 days for informational continuity. If consulting for a new condition they were uncertain about, they would be prepared to trade off an additional wait of 3.5 days to see a GP rather than a nurse, 2.4 days for relational continuity and 3.9 days for informational continuity. For a routine check-up, an individual would be prepared to trade off an additional wait of 3.5 days to see a GP rather than a nurse, 4.2 days for relational continuity and 7.8 days for informational continuity. Conclusions: Respondents stated their preference to wait longer to see a familar medical practitioner who was well informed about their case when they had a problem causing uncertainty or needed a routine check-up. They preferred quick access for likely minor 'low impact' symptoms. Appointment systems in general practice should be sufficiently flexible to meet these different preferences.

Background: Language concordance between health care practitioners and patients have recently been shown to lower the risk of adverse health events. Continuity of care also been shown to have the same impact. Objective: The purpose of this paper is to examine the relative effectiveness of both continuity of care and language concordance as alternative or complementary interventions to improve health outcomes of people with limited English proficiency. Design: A multivariable logistic regression model using rehospitalization as the dependent variable was built. The variable of interest was created to compare language concordance and continuity of care. Participants: The final sample included 22,103 patients from the New York City area between 2010 and 2015 who were non–English-speaking and admitted to their home health site following hospital discharge. Measures: The odds ratio (OR) average marginal effect (AME) of each included variable was calculated for model analysis. Results: When compared with low continuity of care and high language concordance, high continuity of care and high language concordance significantly decreased readmissions (OR=0.71, 95% CI: 0.62–0.80, P<0.001, AME=−4.95%), along with high continuity of care and low language concordance (OR=0.80, 95% CI: 0.74–0.86, P<0.001, AME=−3.26%). Low continuity of care and high language concordance did not significantly impact readmissions (OR=1.04, 95% CI: 0.86–1.26, P=0.672, AME=0.64%). Conclusion: In the US home health system, enhancing continuity of care for those with language barriers may be helpful to address disparities and reduce hospital readmission rates.

This paper develops a new divergence that generalizes relative entropy and can be used to compare probability measures without a requirement of absolute continuity. We establish properties of the divergence, and in particular derive and exploit a representation as an infimum convolution of optimal transport cost and relative entropy. Also included are examples of computation and approximation of the divergence, and the demonstration of properties that are useful when one quantifies model uncertainty.

Abstract Montenegro has passed through more than two decades of flux to reach its current status as a NATO member and European Union (EU) candidate. The smallest republic of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Montenegro’s modern history has been characterised by both significant change (in statehood) and relative continuity (in leadership). The author focuses on the period between the republic’s first multiparty elections in 1990, through the 1997 split within the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and the May 2006 independence referendum to the parliamentary elections of 2016 and the country’s ongoing political crisis, assessing the most significant political developments throughout the aforementioned period.

This paper explores aspects of kinship and geographical distance in terms of the social context of older people in the South Island of New Zealand, and with particular reference to the long-term epidemiological study of ageing in the community of Mosgiel. Comparisons between the numbers of relatives reported in the social networks of the older participants at baseline and in the six-year follow-up study indicate both losses and gains over time. A local qualitative study carried out within the Mosgiel study interprets meanings of closeness and distance from the ways that older people talk about family and friends. In discussing definitions of family, aspects of genealogical and generational connection are described, along with processes which allow for ‘proxies’ and ‘substitution’ in the light of geographical proximity. These role definitions within families, and the wider social networks within which they operate, provide continuity and reliable social support together with flexibility and adaptability to change. The Mosgiel study illustrates some aspects of the combined effects of low population density in the region, rural-to-urban migration, and recent health and social service restructuring on older people and on their families.
