Resumo:
The state of Michigan occupies an area between the Great Plains and the northeastern United States, bordering four Great Lakes, with diverse biogeographical regions. Michigan also has the second most diverse agriculture in the country, with many crops that depend on bees for pollination. This unique combination provides a wide range of opportunities for bees to persist, yet there is no current published checklist of these important insects. This study was conducted to provide the first annotated checklist of the bee (Apoidea: Anthophila) fauna of Michigan, summarizing aspects of their taxonomy and behavior and to provide provisional conservation assessment. The list was compiled from a critical review of published literature, museum specimens, and database records, supplemented by new collections. In total, 465 species are included in the checklist, including 38 new records, however evidence for 13 species is poor, several more species require taxonomic revision, and the presence of additional species is expected. The exotic megachilid species Megachile apicalis Spinola, M. pusilla Pérez (=concinna Smith, auct.) and Osmia taurus Smith are reported from Michigan for the first time. New state records of native species include Anthidium tenuiflorae Cockerell and Nomada alpha alpha Cockerell, both previously undocumented from eastern North America, and Nomada sphaerogaster Cockerell, which has rarely been recognized. The taxonomy of some bee species is clarified by the formal publication of 11 new synonymies (some previously reported online or in manuscripts). The following list cites junior synonyms first followed by the valid name: Andrena chippewaensis Mitchell 1960 = A. (Simandrena) wheeleri Graenicher 1904; Osmia hendersoni Cockerell 1907 = O. (Melanosmia) tarsata Provancher 1888; Osmia michiganensis Mitchell 1962 = O. (M.) subarctica Cockerell 1912 (new status, removed from synonymy with O. (M.) tersula Cockerell 1912); Sphecodes persimilis Lovell and Cockerell 1907 = S. davisii Robertson 1897; Sphecodes knetschi Cockerell 1898 = S. dichrous Smith 1853; Sphecodes carolinus Mitchell 1956 = S. coronus Mitchell 1956; Sphecodes stygius Robertson 1893 = S. mandibularis Cresson 1872; Sphecodes prostygius Mitchell 1960 = S. fattigi Mitchell 1956; Stelis vernalis Mitchell 1962 = S. coarctatus Crawford 1916; and Stelis michiganensis Mitchell 1962 = S. foederalis Smith 1854. Poorly known Andrena (Cnemidandrena) are discussed, including A. parnassiae Cockerell, a new state record, A. robervalensis Mitchell, and the extralimital A. runcinatae Cockerell. Of these, only A. robervalensis was considered in the subgeneric revision, but we recognize all three as valid species pending further study. Nomada binotata (Robertson 1903) and N. quadrimaculata (Robertson 1903) are removed from synonymy with N. ovata (Robertson 1903), based on examination of the lectotypes. A new species, Triepeolus eliseae Rightmyer, the eastern representative of the verbesinae species group, is described. A putative undescribed species, Osmia aff. trevoris, is documented, but requires additional study for its status to be fully resolved. A rich bee fauna is documented that includes geographically-restricted species, rare and regionally-declining species, and economically-important species, providing information for ongoing conservation planning and future analysis of trends in bee populations.

From the 1881 incorporation of Los Angeles' first telephone company, telecommunications spread rapidly in the city and its surrounding region. This article details the proliferation of telephony, and its role in the region's rapid growth and in the formation of region-wide economic networks. Conversely, Pomona, 30 miles from Los Angeles, serves as an example of how local telephone systems could also facilitate sub-regional economic blocs. The history of the telephone, this article argues, is essential to understanding the L.A. region's multi-nucleated development and its economic structure.

ABSTRACT The CAMP reaction was first described by Christie et al. (R. Christie, N. E. Atkins, and E. Munch-Petersen, Aust. J. Exp. Biol. 22:197-200, 1944) as the synergistic lysis of sheep red blood cells by Staphylococcus aureus sphingomyelinase and CAMP factor (cohemolysin), a secreted protein from group B streptococci. We observed a CAMP-like reaction when Bartonella henselae was grown in close proximity to S. aureus on 5% sheep blood agar. This study describes the cloning, sequencing, and characterization of a CAMP-like factor autotransporter gene (cfa) from B. henselae. A cosmid library of B. henselae ATCC 49793 was constructed using SuperCos1 in Escherichia coli XL1-Blue MR. Cosmids were screened for the CAMP reaction, and a quantitative cohemolysis microtiter assay was developed using purified sphingomyelinase. Cosmid clones with the strongest cohemolytic reaction had similar restriction enzyme patterns. A DNA fragment that expressed the cohemolysin determinant was subcloned in a 7,200-bp StuI-BamHI fragment which contained a 6,024-bp open reading frame. The deduced amino acid sequence showed homology to the family of autotransporters. The autotransporters are a group of proteins that mediate their own export through the outer membrane. They contain an N-terminal passenger region, the α-domain, and a C-terminal transporter region, the β-domain. The α-domain contained four, nearly identical 42-amino-acid repeats and showed homology to the family of RTX (repeat in toxin) hemolysins. The concentrated supernatant of the recombinant strain expressed a protein with a molecular mass of 180 kDa on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis consistent with the calculated molecular weight of the secreted α-domain. In conclusion, we have characterized a novel secreted cohemolysin autotransporter protein of B. henselae.

AbstractPapillary tumor of the pineal region (PTPR) is a neuroectodermal tumor thought to originate from cells of the subcommissural organ. Its oncologic properties are still under investigation, as well as the most suitable therapeutic measures for this type of neoplasm. We report the case of a 36-year-old woman with a 1-year history of headache and intermittent diplopia. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan showed a heterogeneously enhancing mass in the pineal region that caused an acute hydrocephalus, and an emergency shunt derivation was necessary. One week later, the patient was submitted to subtotal tumor resection, and remained asymptomatic in the post-operative period. In the follow-up, the patient remained asymptomatic; in the imaging control 3.5 years after the surgical resection, local recurrence was identified, and the patient was submitted to a local radiation protocol. Our literature review showed an early clinical onset due to intracranial hypertension signs. Definitive clinical onset might be reached only through a histopathological examination. Gross total resection followed by radiotherapy is the current standard of care. Local recurrence is often observed, with rare dissemination to the cerebral spinal fluid. The natural history of the PTPR remains unknown, as well as the best treatment strategy. Large case series with longer follow-ups are necessary for further conclusions.

The article summarizes current data about the condition and spread of Sphagnum mosses on the territory of Male Polissya in Lviv Region based on the material from our own field research, materials of National Herbarium of Ukraine (KW), the Herbarium National Museum of Natural History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (LWS) and literature data. An annotated list of the species of the genus Sphagnum was compiled and it includes 15 species together with an indication of place and date of collection, the names of collectors, the spread in Ukraine and biotopes in which the species may occur according to The National Habitat Catalogue of Ukraine and EUNIS. Sphagnum fallax (Klinggr.) Klinggr., S. fimbriatum Wils. and S. palustre L. were determined as the most widespread species of the genus Sphagnum in the research area. Two species S. angustifolium and S. inundatum are indicated for the first time for the territory of Lviv region. Six regionally rare species were found: S. capillifolium, S. cuspidаtum, S. fаllax, S. fimbriаtum, S. obtusum and S. papillosum. The possible disappearance of a species Sphagnum centrale, S. contortum, S. flexuosum and S. obtusum on the territory of the Volytsky Botanical Reserve of national importance was established owing to the draining of wetlands. Ecological groups of sphagnum species on the research area were analyzed, where the predominance of subheliophytes (7 species, 46.7 %), hygrophytes (13 species, 86.7 %), cold tolerant species (13 or 87.7 %) and acidophiles (8 species, 53.3 %) was identified. The topicality of the study is determined by the fact that sphagnum mosses are spread much less frequently than other species from the division of bryophytes because they are confined to a narrow range of biotopes. With the drastic changes in the hydrological regime of the environment, which occurred during the second half of the twentieth century, due to the large areas of drained land, the processes of biotope dehydration became irreversible and some species of sphagnum could have disappeared from the territory of Male Polissya. Due to the sensitivity of bryophytes, in particular species of the sphagnum genus, and due to a disturbance of the hydrological regime of wetlands, the waterlogged mixed coniferous forest in the vicinity of the village Kulychkiv is a promising territory for the creation of a new environmentally protected site or the extension of the Volytsky Botanical Reserve of national importance for the purpose of wetlands preservation here.

We have examined the temporal and spatial slip distribution of the 2017 Mw7.3 Iran-Iraq border region earthquake, utilizing 49 broadband teleseismic P-wave records. Based on the nonnegative least square method and multi-time window, a finite fault model was used to parameterize the rupture process. According to theL-curve, the optimal inversion result was detected. The inversion results showed that the earthquake was a shallow-dip thrusting event. Rupture duration was 20 s, and the total seismic moment was 0.9 × 1020 N·m. There was only one asperity in the fault plane, which indicated the rupture process was simple. The slip was mainly distributed around the initial rupture point, dominated by thrust motion with a small amount of right-lateral strike slip, and the maximum slip was 5.2 m, located on a subfault of the initial rupture. The entire rupture lasted 20 s, and 75% of the energy was released in the first 10 s. The rupture area was 825 km2, and the estimated static stress drop was 6.1 MPa.

The article, on the example of Volyn, analyzes the activities of public organizations in the Ukrainian ethnic lands that became part of Poland and the Soviet Union after the signing of the Riga peace treaty. These lands were the reflection of the most tragic pages in the history of Ukraine. More than once, they have played an extraordinary role in the history of the entire Ukrainian people, which has been reflected in his fate. The defeat of national liberation competitions in 1917 - 1921 and the tragic consequences of these events for the Ukrainian statehood turned Volyn into a specific socio-political and geopolitical region. The events in these territories, as well as the policies of the governments of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and the USSR and the Second Commonwealth, were decisive for the Ukrainian population living on ethnic Ukrainian lands and those who found themselves in other countries. Our research suggests that the socio-economic processes in Volyn during the interwar period were an interesting social phenomenon when Ukrainians were immigrants in their ethnic lands among Ukrainians. The line of the Soviet-Polish border, which was the frontier of the opposition, attracted the most active participants in the national liberation struggle, who continued it under new conditions of statelessness, political and ideological pressure, persecution and repression by the smelling regimes. Work and activity in the interwar period of prominent political figures of the UNR era, religious, cultural and educational figures in the territory of Western Volyn, was of great importance not only for the population of the region, but also for the Ukrainian people. In the Volyn lands, the Orthodox Church had a huge influence on the people, Christian morality in the interwar period acted as the dominant ideology. No political party or NGO has had such an impact on the masses as the church. Understanding this, the Ukrainian clergy not only defended the Orthodox faith on both sides of the borders that divided Volhynia, but also nurtured national consciousness, language, and culture.

Ramu stunt disease of sugarcane (ScRS) was responsible for large yield losses in commercial sugarcane varieties (interspecific hybrids of Saccharum spp.) in the Ramu Valley in northeast Papua New Guinea during the late 1980s. Losses were total in the cultivar Ragnar; Q90 and Yasawa were also affected but Cadmus and Q107 were resistant. Since that time, replanting with resistant cultivars has kept the disease under control. The disease spreads rapidly in susceptible cultivars, where it results in severe stunting of the cane and a yellow mottled striping of the leaves. Although several attempts have been made to detect a viral pathogen, no evidence for viral etiology exists and the causal agent remains unknown. With a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of general phytoplasma primers from the 16S rDNA (1), phytoplasma-specific products were consistently amplified from the leaves of field-grown sugarcane, from sugarcane with ScRS symptoms grown in the glasshouse at IACR-Rothamsted, UK, and from samples of the putative vector collected at Ramu, the delphacid plant hopper Eumetopina flavipes Muir, which had been found to transmit symptoms of Ramu stunt in pot trials (2). Digestion of the amplimers with restriction enzymes RsaI and HaeIII gave profiles that matched those of members of the sugarcane white leaf (SCWL) phytoplasma group. The DNA sequence of the intergenic spacer region of the phytoplasma associated with ScRS showed a 95.98% homology with that of SCWL, suggesting that this newly discovered phytoplasma can provisionally be placed in this group. The 16S-23S intergenic spacer sequence has been submitted to GenBank (accession no. AF 106061). References: (1) C. P. R. Cronjé et al. Ann. Appl. Biol. 133:177, 1998; (2) L. S. Kuniata et al. J. AbstractThis article outlines the development of radiology training in the Middle East. It discusses the history of radiology in the region and current available pathways to subspecialize in musculoskeletal (MSK) radiology. Owing to the rapidly changing demographics and health indicators in the region, a major shift has occurred in the government's focus in directing more resources to advance the health care system. This in addition to intraregional initiatives, such as the establishment of many radiologic societies, has provided strong incentives toward developing radiology training programs in the region. There are profound differences in the region regarding the development of radiology, with only few countries offering structured radiology training programs and MSK radiology fellowships. To keep up with the explosion of information in imaging technology and hold clinical ground, current and future MSK radiologists must overcome certain challenges and change their approach to stay clinically relevant.

Shorea acuminata Dyer, Shorea curtisii Dyer ex King, Shorea leprosula Miq., and Shorea parvifolia Dyer are dominant tree species in the tropical rainforest of Peninsular Malaysia, which experienced several climatic changes during Pleistocene. To investigate the current population structure and demographic history of these species, we analyzed levels and patterns of nucleotide polymorphism of the nuclear gene region PgiC. We also used sequence data of the GapC gene region obtained in our previous study. Negative Tajima’s D values observed in both investigated gene regions for S. curtisii, S. leprosula, and S. parvifolia implied that all three species have experienced population expansion events. Little to moderate levels of population differentiation in S. acuminata and S. curtisii suggested recent divergence of the investigated populations after postglacial colonization of the Peninsular Malaysia. In addition, some haplotypes were similar or identical to haplotypes of the other species. The existence of such haplotypes could be partially explained by interspecific hybridization. Indeed, we found some putative hybrid individuals. Interspecific hybridization among closely related species might have contributed to the polymorphism of the investigated species.

One of the central goals of archaeology is the definition of regional cultural succession. Since at least the 1960s, archaeology has purported to have moved beyond the strictures of Culture History, and yet the constructs of that paradigm (styles, periods, cultures) continue to be used routinely. This work aims to show that by doing so, one is still implicitly subscribing to that theoretical perspective"s assumptions and biases. In the end, this article is intended to be a self-critical assessment of the shortcomings of Caribbean archaeology vis-à-vis issues inherent in that region"s dominant culture-history framework. Moreover, it aims to provide an example for Caribbeanists, and archaeologists working in other regions, of the value of moving beyond the products of, and not just beyond the term, Culture History.

The article deals with the history and current state of methodological activities of the Tomsk regional universal scientific library named after A. S. Pushkin – the methodological center for open to general use public libraries – from 1930 to 2019. It observes the matter and peculiarities of the regional library scientific- methodological system during this period. It is noted, that a transition from the directive style of library management to the interaction of regional and municipal levels of management has taken place. In modern conditions, innovative forms have been introduced into the work of the methodological service, which is an important factor for the further development of the regional library business. Innovations have affected the system of professional development. An educational and methodological center has been created within the methodological department, which activity demonstrates new approaches to the educational function. For the effective work with young librarians, the club of online communication “#Profichat” has been organized. The website “Professionals” is also in demand, created to inform library workers of the region about events in the library activities of the country and the region. The most important achievement of TOUNB methodological service is its participation in the national project “Culture”, which is highly effective: a new generation of libraries has appeared in the region, and about 40 employees of regional libraries have improved their skills in Federal libraries. The restraining factors in the methodological activities development are lack of methodologists in a number of central library systems and insufficiency of publications that address issues of development and organization of scientific and methodological support for libraries.

The Franciscan church of S. Fortunato in Todi, an important central Italian example of a Gothic hall church, was begun in 1292, when this building type was still rather unusual in the region. Earlier students of S. Fortunato have generally attributed its appearance in Todi to the Franciscan demand for open preaching halls, but a closer analysis suggests there were additional, perhaps even stronger, incentives for using it. A hall church achieved an imposing effect on a small construction site and helped fulfill a desire to underscore the building's Franciscan affiliation. Previously ignored, this question of the motivations of the Todi hall church has particular relevance to current studies of the mendicant architecture, that is, the architecture of the new urban orders, principally the Franciscans and Dominicans. The question is: do we continue to see mendicant churches exclusively in terms of the friars' altruistic religious mission, or should we see them as efforts at self-promotion in the competitive milieu of the late medieval city?

Abstract The glacial geology of the White Mountains in New Hampshire has been the subject of many investigations since the 1840's. A series of controversies evolved during this period. First was the question of what geologic processes were responsible for eroding the bedrock and depositing the cover of surficial sediments. By the 1860's, the concept of glaciation replaced earlier theories invoking floods and icebergs. Research in the late 1800's concerned the relative impact of continental versus local glaciation. Some workers believed that surficial deposits in northern New Hampshire were the product of valley glaciers radiating from the White Mountains, but in the early 1900's continental glaciation was established as the most important process across the region. Debate over the extent and timing of alpine glaciation in the Presidential Range has continued until recent years. The most intensely argued topic has been the manner in which the Late Wisconsinan ice sheet withdrew from the White Mountains: whether by rapid stagnation and downwastage, or by progressive retreat of a still-active ice margin. The stagnation model became popular in the 1930's and was unchallenged until the late 1900's. Following a research hiatus lasting over 40 years, renewed interest in the glacial history of the White Mountains continues to inspire additional work.

AbstractA new species of tyrant flycatcher (Suiriri islerorum) is described from the cerrado region of Brazil and adjacent eastern Bolivia. The species previously had been confused with Suiriri suiriri affinis, with which it is syntopic at multiple sites. The new species was first identified by voice. Although cryptically similar to S. s. affinis in many respects, the new species is readily identified by all vocalizations, bill size, color pattern of the tail, and shape of the central rectrices. Most distinctive are the male–female duets, which are accompanied by dramatic wing-lifting displays not performed by any congeners. Reciprocal playback experiments of tape-recorded vocalizations demonstrated that the new species and S. s. affinis do not respond to one another's vocalizations. We provide information on the natural history of the new flycatcher, along with spectrograms of its various vocalizations. We also provide vocal analysis of all other named taxa in Suiriri, and discuss the various intrageneric relationships. In particular, S. s. affinis and S. s. bahiae, although distinct morphologically, are vocally and behaviorally similar, and respond to one another's vocalizations in playback experiments.

ABSTRACTObjectives: The aim of this study is to determine retrospectively the presence of carotid artery calcifications (CACs) detected on panoramic radiographs (PRs) in a group of Turkish population. Further, the relationships between CACs and gender, life style, and medical history were evaluated. Methods:During the years 2004 to 2006, a random sample of 1282 PRs was collected from patients older than 40 years who were being treated by the School of Dentistry, Erciyes University. Of these 1282 PRs, 750 PRs were included in this study. Medical data was collected from the archival records of the dental school. Results: About 38 (5.06%) CACs were found on the PRs of 12 (4.5%) males and 26 (5.4%) females. The CAC prevalence was not significantly different between the males and females (P=0.583). These calcifications were unilateral in 26 (68.4%) and bilateral in 12 (31.6%) subjects. Of those in the positive group, there were 12 subjects (31.58%) with hyperlipidemia, 12 subjects (31.58%) with hypertension, 7 subjects (18.4%) with diabetes mellitus, 6 subjects (15.8%) with cardiovascular disease, and 6 subjects (15.8%) with smoking history. Conclusions: This study has the highest CACs prevalence in comparison to the other studies. Therefore, dentists caring for subjects with dental problems should carefully evaluate their PRs for the evidence of CACs, and refer them for medical evaluation as indicated. So, incidental findings could provide life-saving information. (Eur J Dent 2007;1:132-138)

Objective This study aimed to evaluate the psychosocial background history and confounding social factors in pregnant women with opioid use disorder (OUD). Study Design We performed a prospective observational cohort study of pregnant women from a dedicated obstetrical OUD clinic. Data collection came from extensive interview sessions regarding psychosocial background events and other social factors that might impact prenatal care. Results From February 1, 2017, through September 30, 2018, 411 pregnant women were evaluated and 294 (72%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 67–76%) reported abuse of which 217 (53%, 95% CI: 48–58%) involved sexual abuse (prior to the age of 13 years in 54% of cases) and 209 (51%, 95% CI: 46–56%) involved cases of other physical abuse. Only 10% reported habitual opioid use for managing chronic pain. Only 9% had a valid driver's license with access to a car making transportation to office visits difficult. Conclusion A history of abuse (mainly sexual and/or physical) appears to be the main precipitating event leading to OUD in our pregnant population. Transportation was the primary social factor limiting access to prenatal care. For primary prevention to be successful in our region, early identification of young women who have experienced abuse needs to occur followed by psychotherapy health care intervention before opioid drugs are used.

Abstract Purpose The goal of the study was to survey ankle joint disorder in male senior high school and college student basketball players based on the results of an ultrasonographic medical check-up of the ankle joint. Materials and Methods The subjects were 17 senior high school student and 19 college student basketball players. Ultrasonography, evaluation of ATFL injury, and examination of the talocrural joint region were performed. The subjects were grouped based on the presence or absence of old ATFL injury, and subjects with ATFL injury were classified by the injured region: fibular insertion site, parenchyma, and talar insertion site. The talocrural joint region was evaluated based on the areas of the lateral margin, central region, and medial margin, and sites with an irregular bone contour and osteophyte were counted individually. The questionnaire asked about the patients’ history of ankle injuries. Results A questionnaire survey revealed that 70–79% of all subjects had experienced a sprain at least once and 21–29% had frequently sprained the left or right foot 10 or more times in the past. On ultrasonography, there was no significant difference in ligament injury or injured site between the senior high school and college students, but the number of osteochondral findings in the talocrural joint region was significantly higher in the college students. In addition, the number of injured sites significantly increased in those with 10 or more years of playing experience. Conclusion These results suggest that disorder of the talocrural joint region progresses with an increase in years of experience in student basketball players who do not take specific preventive measures against this injury.

We have increased the density of genetic markers on the Arabidopsis lyrata chromosomes AL6 and AL7 corresponding to the A. thaliana chromosome IV, in order to determine chromosome rearrangements between these two species, and to compare recombination fractions across the same intervals. We confirm the two rearrangements previously inferred (a reciprocal translocation and a large inversion, which we infer to be pericentric). By including markers around the centromere regions of A. thaliana chromosomes IV and V, we localize the AL6 centromere, and can localize the breakpoints of these chromosome rearrangements more precisely than previously. One translocation breakpoint was close to the centromere, and the other coincided with one end of the inversion, suggesting that a single event caused both rearrangements. At the resolution of our mapping, apart from these rearrangements, all other markers are in the same order in A. lyrata and A. thaliana. We could thus compare recombination rates in the two species. We found slightly higher values in A. thaliana, and a minimum estimate for regions not close to a centromere in A. lyrata is 4–5 centimorgans per megabase. The mapped region of AL7 includes the self-incompatibility loci (S-loci), and this region has been predicted to have lower recombination than elsewhere in the genome. We mapped 17 markers in a region of 1·23 Mb surrounding these loci, and compared the approximately 600 kb closest to the S-loci with the surrounding region of approximately the same size. There were significantly fewer recombination events in the closer than the more distant region, supporting the above prediction, but showing that the low recombination region is very limited in size.

SummaryNumerous approaches to the stifle joint have been described for therapy of bone and joint diseases. The ease of these techniques, the adequacy of their exposure, and the presence of the neurovascular plexus in the caudal region of the stifle joint make a caudal approach impractical for routine use. Diseases of the caudal compartment of the stifle joint or neuro-vascular plexus may, however, necessitate surgery in this region. In the case presented, development of an approach to the caudal region was necessary for diagnosis of a distal nerve sheath tumour of a branch of the tibial nerve.Nerve sheath tumours in the dog occur most commonly in the brachial plexus or nerve roots. They infrequently occur in distal nerves and present with chronic and often severe pain. In this case a nerve sheath tumour of the tibial nerve was identified after a 16-month history of lameness and pain. Diagnosis required development of a caudolateral approach to the caudal compartment of the stifle joint. Amputation of the left hind limb was performed after confirmation of the diagnosis.

This paper applies Karl Wittfogel' s theory of hydraulic societies to China’s relationship with Tibet. It argues that the Chinese are interested in control over Tibet not only for its land, location, or wealth of natural resources, but also for control of its headwaters. Hundreds of millions of people rely on the numerous large rivers that start in the Tibetan plateau, making the region a critically important water supply for Asia. Wittfogel’s work theorizes that China’s territory and authority has expanded with the need to secure water for its large population and food production. The paper contains two sections: the first summarizes Wittfogel’s arguments, a history of Tibet, and China’s control of it; the second describes China’s attempts to modernize Tibet, specifically through river development, and the environmental damage caused by such efforts. Tibet’s rivers are crucial for the entirety of Asia, and the Plateau’s massive supplies of water are just one of its many resources. By focusing on rivers, this article describes the importance of Tibet and how increasing levels of resource extraction legitimatize Chinese centralized authority.

Four new records of S. afer are presented from Tunisia which extend the known range in this country to more southerly regions and allow some conclusions on ecological requirements. Observations of slave raids in the laboratory showed that S. afer is a dulotic social parasite using Tetramorium semilaeve André, 1883 as its host. Based on the study of various types of sources and analysis of Russian and foreign literature, the author conceptually substantiates an approach to the study of the Balkan region / South-Eastern Europe. One of the main problems considered in the article is the change in the course of the history of the 19 th-21 st centuries the ratio of the concepts of «Balkans/South-Eastern Europe», «Eastern Europe», «Central-Eastern and South-Eastern Europe», «Western Balkans», «Western Balkan countries» and «European Western Balkans». The author characterizes various historical stages of the development of the region in the context of world wars and revolutions of the 20 th century, shows the specifics of political and ethnic processes, the internal political situation in each country and relations between the states of the region, the correlation between the processes of regionalization and globalization. With the disappearance of Eastern Europe in the form in which it existed in 1949-1991, after the anti-communist social and national revolutions in the former socialist countries of Europe in 1989-1992, an integral part of the process of national self-determination was the change in the regional self-identification of each people, society and state. If in the 2000 s, positive dynamics prevailed both in terms of internal political development, intraregional and global international relations, then in the 2010 s, the forward movement has stalled in terms of both the internal economic, social and political development of the states of the region, and the settlement of interethnic and interstate conflicts in the region against the background of a general aggravation of international relations. The article examines the role of regional identification and self-identification as elements of national self-awareness. The author also characterizes the challenges facing the countries of the region in the short, medium and long terms and indicates that the choice of the Balkans / South-Eastern Europe, despite the specificity caused by their historical fate, and all the difficulties of development and conflicts, has already been made: the Balkans (like Russia as well) is an integral part of Europe.

Summary Objective: Description of the signalment, history, clinical signs and radiological findings of a horse with an acute severe lameness. Radiographs, ultrasonographic, CT and MRI images were taken to visualize the exact lesion. Material and methods: Based upon the history, clinical examination and diagnostic anaesthesia the region of pain was suspected to be the palmar aspect of the pastern joint region. After radiographic and ultrasonographic examination, CT and MRI were performed. A desmitis of the straight distal sesamoidean ligament and avulsion fragments from the proximal eminence of the middle phalanx (middle scutum) were diagnosed. Results: The horse was treated conservatively with oral administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and submitted to a controlled exercise program. Within two weeks significant improvement was evident. After three months the horse had improved both clinically and on the views obtained by ultrasonography. A year later the horse was sound and had returned to his previous athletic level. Conclusion and clinical relevance: This case demonstrates the additional value of CT combined with MRI to a clinical examination and standard diagnostic imaging tools. After clinical, ultrasonographic and radiographic examination the tentative diagnosis was a cyst-like lesion in the proximal region of the pastern joint. The ultrasonographic examination revealed an irregularity in shape and fibre lining of the straight sesamoidean ligament. However, no conclusions were made at this point, since ultrasonography of this region is difficult, and conclusions are hard to be made (4, 6, 7, 9). Arthroscopic diagnostic evaluation of the joint was optional; however, uncertainty remained on the exact localisation of the cyst-like lesion. Based on the CT and MRI it became clear that the horse was suffering of a desmitis of the straight distal sesamoidean ligament and extra-articular avulsion fragments from the proximal border of the middle phalanx. Surgical intervention seemed to be unnecessary, and a conservative treatment was initiated with a successful outcome.

Gondwanaland was a southern mega-continent that began to break up 180 million years ago. This article explores Gondwanalands modern history, its unexpected political and cultural purchase since the 1880s. Originating with geological and palaeontological research in the Gond region of Central India, Gondwana has become recognisable and useful, especially in settler colonial contexts. This prospectus sets out a program for a highly unusual transnational project, involving scholars of India, Australia, Antarctica, southern Africa and South America. Unpredictably across the five continents of former Gondwanaland, the term itself signals depth of time and place across the spectrum of Indigenous land politics, coal-based extractive politics, and, paradoxically, nationalist environmental politics. All kinds of once-living Gondwanaland biota deliver us fossil fuels today the gifts of Gondwana some geologists call southern hemisphere coal, gas, petroleum and so the modern history of Gondwanaland is also a substantive history of the Anthropocene.

AbstractWe report the first case in Peru of cystic fibrosis caused by a homozygous deletion of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. A 10-month-old child who presented with meconium ileus and pancreatic insufficiency was tested for cystic fibrosis. Both parents of the child are of Peruvian background, are nonconsanguineous, and have no personal or family history of the disease. Chromosome microarray analysis revealed a homozygous deletion of the CFTR gene on chromosome 7 (7q31.2) within a maternally derived 12.8-Mb region of loss of heterozygosity with deletion of a region that includes the CFTR gene. Parental testing confirmed this finding. This case highlights the great importance of molecular testing and the study of chromosomal rearrangements in reaching a correct diagnosis and providing proper genetic counseling to the affected families.

AbstractMore than any other scholar, James C. Scott has drawn attention to the significance of what Marx termed ‘primitive accumulation’ in the historical transformation of the societies of Southeast Asia. Taking Scott's work as its point of departure, this article sketches the broad contours of primitive accumulation across the region from the mid-nineteenth century up through the early twentieth century. The article shows how primitive accumulation unfolded in different ways in different parts of Southeast Asia and suggests how the different modalities of primitive accumulation have continued to shape the trajectories and parameters of politics across the region to this day.
