Resumo:
The thesis, 'Cianalas Redefined', examines a selection of modern Gaelic literature by writers from the island of Lewis. The texts include: the poetry of Derick Thomson and Iain Crichton Smith, Iain Crichton Smith's short stories and novellas, and novellas by Norman Malcolm MacDonald and Alasdair Campbell. The thesis explores how the common and traditional theme of exile has come to be manifest in modern Gaelic literature in a form similar to European Existential literature. In illustrating the connection between exile and Existential literature, it is hoped that a new form of the Gaelic term 'cianalas' (homesickness/nostalgia) may be understood. In order to redefine cianalas, the following are some of the topics considered in relation to the chosen texts: intrinsic love of island home and culture; conventional physical exile; the 'split' between primary and secondary environments; crisis of personal identity; clarification of different types of exile present in the literature, including metaphysical and temporal exile; whether this literature fulfils the prerequisites of Existential literature, as described elsewhere; Existential concepts of 'authentic' and 'inauthentic existence' and 'bad faith'; the 'outsider' living in a close-knit community; cultural stereotypes; the 'Gaelic psyche' and 'unconscious'.

Transforming the first floor of a 1950s building at Sveavägen, Stockholm, this project aims to redefine the traditional cinema. This is not a perfect quiet black box, but a place for sharing, experiencing and discussing film. A cinema for independent films, short films, documentaries and film festivals, but perhaps also presentations and lectures. A flexible building that can open up, or close down, depending on the event. A cinema where one can sit down for a brief movement with a coffee, or spend an evening at the big screen.

The interstate 70 corridor serves as a gateway to the mountainous region of Colorado for all of Denver's residents, the majority of travelers from the East, and most all visitors flying into the state. The corridor no longer functions efficiently as a connecting tie and the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel acts as a centralized hub in the system and under adverse conditions both are susceptable collapse effectively crippling the entire network. As population increases, the number of drivers on the road will increase and inturn traffic congestion will continue to get worse. If the current trend continues the state of Colorado is positioned to loose billions of dollars in lost oppourtunity, not to mention the loss in percieved quality of living to the Denver residents. This project seeks to, through the anaylsis of the exising conditions and the plausible future, describe a solution to the problem.

Bloom, Martin Harlod. "Double Accounting for Goodwill- A Problem Redefined". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/705.

Resumo:
The function of accounting is to provide users with useful information in making economic decisions. Information regarding goodwill, a major constituent of the value of many listed companies, is likely to be useful in making decisions relating to those companies. A historical review of accounting literature, including professional standards, relating to methods of accounting for purchased goodwill showed that none of them has stood the test of time. The current trend towards an impairment paradigm will not resolve the issue satisfactorily because it produces, at best, a partial solution. The difficulty in accounting meaningfully for goodwill is compounded because, given its foundation in historical cost principles, accounting has been unable to present any information at all with regard to internally generated goodwill within the confines of the traditional Balance Sheet. This, in turn, has led to the evasion of the reality that the two forms of goodwill are inextricably merged. Trying to account satisfactorily for goodwill has been a prime example of R.R. Sterling's 'issues conceived in a way that they are in principle unresolvable'. The problem was accordingly redefined as being to find a method by which the current level of information relating to goodwill in the financial statements contained in a company's Annual Report could be improved. This thesis seeks to identify a logically defensible method of accounting for goodwill which addresses the redefined problem. It builds upon the historical research undertaken, combined with a priori reasoning, to propose an additional financial statement which is a modification of nineteenth century 'double accounting' in a modern context. This statement, which goes far to solve the redefined problem, also furnishes information regarding the company's market capitalization at balance date and is termed the Market Capitalization Statement ("MCS"). While the idea of furnishing market capitalization data to readers of the Annual Report is not new, it is believed that this is the first time such data has been systematically linked with the Balance Sheet to provide an objective, integrated and meaningful view of goodwill in the financial statements. The practical application and simplicity of the MCS are illustrated by a range of examples drawn from Australian 'dot-com' companies over a period of time which saw considerable fluctuation in both goodwill and market capitalization, supplemented by examining data relating to some of Australia's largest listed companies over the same period. These examples demonstrate that the MCS has the potential to provide significant information not available in conventional financial statements, while freeing the traditional Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss Account to present information in a more meaningful and less distorted way. Finally, the MCS is noted as still being subject to certain problems and distortions in the context of the historical cost basis of the remaining financial statements. It is shown that, if used in the context of an exit price based system, Chambers' CoCoA, many of these distortions are removed. The MCS also complements the information provided by CoCoA as originally formulated.

Dahl-Wolfe (1895-1989) is best-known as a fashion photographer, her photographic life encompassed a pattern of art and documentary ideas interwoven over a forty-year period. This thesis describes her early art influences and explores her photography career in regards to the historical and cultural developments from World War I through the 1950s. Dahl-Wolfe is compared with her contemporaries such as Consuelo Kanaga, Dorothea Lange, Edward Weston, Richard Avedon, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. The study reveals how Dahl-Wolfe's work reflects photography's evolution over a specific period and how traditional constructions affect the reception of commercial photographers. Conclusively, Dahl-Wolfe's oeuvre straddles such an array of constructed arenas that she virtually fell through the cracks and has been narrowly defined as a result of art historical definitions.

This dissertation investigates the discourse on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Uganda and how IDPs in urban areas fit in to the discourse on both the theoretical and practical level. The dissertation reveals that although IDPs in urban areas by definition are included in both international and national IDP definitions, urban IDPs are seen as either economic migrants, or as former IDPs who have now reached a durable solution. The consequences of such exclusion from the IDP label are that IDPs outside camps are not considered for assistance or included in the return and resettlement frameworks or information activities.

The formation of the IDP label in Uganda has been influenced by the government’s approach of control and military presence aimed at keeping people in camps in the north. Consequently, IDPs are perceived entirely as people residing in camps. The humanitarian community has been complicit with the government’s policy of keeping people in camps by limiting assistance to IDPs registered and residing within them. The obvious lack of resources dedicated to protecting IDPs also influences the way the label is shaped. It is challenging to identify IDPs in an urban setting because of lack of registration and information. It is also difficult to determine who are forced migrants, and which of them have reached a durable solution. Consequently, IDPs in Uganda has in practice been redefined to those staying in camps.

Upon acknowledging how the voices of urban IDPs are marginalized within the dominant discourse, phase two of the fieldwork progressed towards influencing this discourse by revealing the political and bureaucratic agency in the processes of labelling creating greater awareness of the processes that serve to exclude urban IDPs from return and resettlement frameworks. By facilitating the mobilization of an urban IDP interest group I together with the community outreach organization Refugee Law Project worked together with urban IDP communities advocating for their rights.

The research was conducted between August 1993 - June 1996 in Tokyo The research tests the ubiquity of an emerging individualism in Japan in the aftermath of the speculative Bubble collapse. The thesis seeks to demonstrate that an individualism is emerging in Japan and being legitimated in two complementary dynamic processes. One is a 'top-down' process whereby individuality is being engendered, legitimated and institutionalized through planned company organisational restructuring. The other is a 'bottom-up' process where increasing unemployment and a burgeoning flexible economy requires individuals to show initiative and independence. Both these processes can be seen to be occurring against a general trend of 'individuation' (Dore 1992) which has gathered momentum since the oil crises of 1973 and 1974 (Sengoku 1991). In both cases, the emergence of this individualism is plotted by focusing primarily on the economically driven changes between those ethics and practices generally regarded as typical of 'the group model of Japanese society', as described by Nakane (1970) and critiqued by Befu (1980a, 1980b, 1990), and those ethics and practices emerging to characterize what I term a 'new individualism'. Through an ethnographic analysis of two case studies: one a software company, to study the 'top-down' process, the other among people who attend Techno music parties, to study the 'bottom- up' process, it emerged that a primary ethic of 'group models of Japanese society' (Befu 1980b, 1990) is that the individual self should 'suppress itself or 'deny itself, and conform to uniform standards of thought and behaviour set at the collective level. This was in marked contrast to the ethics and practice of the two case studies, where the individual self is expected to 'express itself. This 'redefinition' of the individual self engenders and is engendered by a complementary redefinition of ethics and practice at the collective level, where the requirement to conform to particular uniform sets of standards for thought and action associated with group models of Japanese society, are absent. In order to apprehend changes to the self at the individual and collective level, the little understood concepts of seken and sekentei were used. The research demonstrates that sekeii is the moral framework of 'the group model of Japanese society', while sekentei is the 'public self of this model of society, and that, as individuality emerges and becomes legitimated within society as a whole, seken and sekentei, and associated situational ethics and 'multiple' senses of the individual self associated with these concepts, lose their moral and social legitimacy, giving way to a unified sense of self within a single, nuanced, universal public domain. The research also demonstrates that this new individualism is not primarily a colonization by Western individualism, but is an identifiably Japanese individualism grounded in well- documented aspects of the Japanese self and Japanese society, and best understood as a departure from, and redefinition of these aspects of the Japanese self and of Japanese society.

Resumo:
The Pearl Harbor controversy may be redefined through a study of radio intelligence as practiced by the United States Navy (USN) in 1941. Newly released primary documents, supported by secondary historical and technical accounts, explain the effectiveness of USN radio intelligence in terms of its principal activities in 1941: cryptanalysis, traffic analysis and intelligence reporting. This evidence also demonstrates the extent to which the USN exchanged intelligence with its Allied counterparts. USN radio intelligence penetrated the vast expanses of the Pacific, permitting the partial reading of Japanese naval messages and the tracking of Japanese vessels. In the period preceding the Pearl Harbor attack, radio intelligence provided the USN with foreknowledge of Japan's intentions and actions in the north Pacific, although Washington failed to provide its Hawaiian commanders with adequate forewarning. Washington's response can now only be defined in terms of gross neglect or careful design, rather than surprise.

We investigate the structure of the equation of state of finite nuclear matter by examining the nature of isospin dependence in the (a)symmetry energy term. In particular, we include in the description of the binding energy fourth-order dependence with respect to the asymmetry factor, (N-Z)/A, and the regime of the l=0 Landau parameter, F0´ , is required to be less than –1. This modified equation predicts a minimum binding energy where N≠Z, in addition to the standard symmetric minimum when N=Z. Results with the new asymmetry energy term are compared with experimental binding and symmetry energies from standard semi-empirical mass formulas. Importantly, this method reveals one possible mechanism for producing the phenomenon of neutron excess which is seen in physical nuclei

Resumo:
Seeing in 3D relies on the fact that our two eyes are spaced slightly apart. As a result, when our eyes are aligned on an object each eye has its own, slightly different view of the world. Information about relative depth is sent from visual cortex to the motor control centers in the brainstem, which are responsible for generating appropriate motor commands to move the eyes. Surprisingly, how the neurons in the brainstem use the depth information supplied by visual cortex to precisely aim each eye on a visual target remains highly controversial. This thesis investigates how individual neurons control the movement of each eye when we look between objects located at different depths. I first studied the signals encoded by individual oculomotoneurons during conjugate and disconjugate saccades and evaluated the role the antagonist muscle plays in accurate binocular positioning. I found that a first-order model (containing eye position and velocity terms) provided an adequate description of the neural discharges of oculomotoneurons during conjugate saccades. However, during disconjugate saccades I found the conjugate sensitivities could not be used to predict the responses during disconjugate saccades. Instead, the majority of the neurons preferentially encoded the movement of the ipsilateral eye. I next studied the signals carried by saccadic burst neurons during conjugate and disconjugate saccades. I first showed that the majority of the saccadic burst neurons dynamically encode the movement of the ipsilateral eye during the fast saccadic component of a movement. Moreover, using a neural simulation I found that the saccadic burst generator carries all the vergence drive necessary to shape the activity of the abducens motoneurons to which it projects. These results are consistent with the proposal that classically assumed "conjugate" saccadic structures in the oculomotor brainstem underlie vergence facilitation by providing monocular saccadic commands to the abducens during disconjugate saccades and a separate vergence pathway is used to adjust ocular alignment following the saccadic component of the movement. Subsequently, I tested the prediction that if the monocular commands issued by saccadic burst neurons are important for facilitating vergence velocities during horizontal saccades, they should also contribute to facilitating vergence associated with a vertical saccade when the conjugate component of the movement is negligible. As predicted, I found that saccadic burst neurons are also well suited for facilitating vergence during vertical saccadic movements. In particular, saccadic burst neurons contribute to generating increased vergence velocities by dynamically encoding the movement of an individual eye rather than the conjugate component of the movement. Finally, I used single unit recording and microstimulation techniques to investigate the role the superior colliculus plays in generating vergence eye movements. I provide evidence that individual neurons within the rostral SC encode slow changes in vergence angle. These results suggest that there exists a distinct grouping of neurons that encode slow vergence within the rostral SC and indicate that activation of the rostral SC underlies the ability to accurately position each of the two eyes when fixating targets in 3-dimensional space to ensure stereopsis.Taken together, my findings provide important new insight into how the brain controls 3-dimensional gaze shifts. I provide evidence that distinct neural pathways control fast and slow vergence. These results contradict the traditional view that the brain is circuited with independent pathways for conjugate and vergence control and suggest the need to update textbooks and review articles to emphasize the physiological differences between the neural circuitry controlling fast and slow vergence.

Utilizing Boyer's (1990) four scholarship functions of professorial engagement and Wilber's (1998) four frames of organizational context, this inquiry examined faculty of color's experiences at a primarily White urban research university in their pursuit of facilitating students' intercultural competence. Specifically, through narrative inquiry, the study examined institutional factors associated with faculty of color's ability to integrate an intercultural competence focus in their scholarship of discovery, scholarship of integration, scholarship of engagement, and scholarship of teaching. Results indicate that research participants are strongly committed to the teaching, learning, community engagement, and scholarship of intercultural competence. However, institutional emphasis on the scholarship of discovery has forced them to invest most heavily in the scholarship of discovery rather than the other three functions of the professoriate. Moreover, while intercultural competence appears to be an institutional value, no specific definition exists and no intercultural performance criteria are outlined in promotion and tenure policies. Recommendations for supporting faculty of color's intercultural endeavors across the four functions of scholarship are framed in explicit organizational policies that affect implicit organizational norms, including: formal mentoring, equitable teaching and committee loads, and integration of intercultural competence into the institutional mission with attendant promotion and tenure criteria.

This thesis seeks to examine the relationship between occult religion and the global circulation of texts. For some time now, scholars have rejected the secularism thesis or the idea that there has been a decline of religion in the post-Enlightenment period. Today, we largely accept that religion did not actually decline or disappear but, rather, it has changed form. Religion shifted from traditional religious institutions to become an aspect of aesthetic culture, available through the commercial economy. My work explores how the relationship between the book and commercial religion emerged and evolved during the long nineteenth century. Occultism has long been viewed as an aspect of the rise of secular society following the Enlightenment. This thesis proposes a new lens through which we can view the evolution of occultism, seeing it as a response to growth in global networks of empire and the commercialization of religion through the printed word. It explores how the nature of the transmission of occultism shifted, particularly during the final decades of the nineteenth century. Antoine Faivre’s foundational text Access to Western Esotericism (1994) put forward the concept of the transmission of occultism as something that occurs between a disciple and an initiate. My thesis, however, argues that the widening of print activity and literacy expanded the opportunities for initiation into magic to occur more broadly, changing the nature of who could become an initiate. As such, secrecy around magic became redefined. It shifted from being a pursuit of the literate elite to something that was widely available. This analysis is delivered in four chapters. The introduction examines the relationship between literature and nineteenth-century occultism. It also discusses the influence of globalization. Chapter one discusses the occult in post-revolutionary France and the influence of Egyptian orientalism on French occultism. Chapter two addresses Victorian occultism and discusses the context of a growing Victorian literary industry. Chapter three addresses the Theosophical Society as an agent of globalized and commercialized religion. It also addresses the importance of British imperialism in India. Finally, chapter four discusses the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and the resurgence of Egyptian orientalism and elitism in British occultism.

This thesis uses new histories of exhibitions, cultural institutions, individuals and artworks to problematize and reconfigure current conceptions of British Pop art, arguing for the deployment of the term ‘British Pop arts’, as opposed to ‘British Pop Art’, to reflect the varied usage of the artistic practice across Britain during the 1960s. The central conclusion of this historical account is the recognition of a wider Pop arts network, albeit formed of disparate and often conflictual subjectivities, which coalesced around a particular cultural discourse and attendant institutions. The celebrated Royal College of Art ‘Pop artists’ are located within a network of ‘Pop art producers’; a new historical descriptor which encompasses a wider array of largely overlooked artists whose practices are positioned within a particular visual art discourse. The ‘Northern neo-realist’ Pop arts practised in Liverpool, the ‘Jazz art’ of Mal Dean and the ‘Fine Artz’ of The Fine Artz Associates all represent examples of an alternative, often oppositional, Pop arts, many of which actively resisted the assumed dominance of RCA Pop art and the spectacular cultures of ‘Swinging London’. The hegemonic discourse theory of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, the historical sociology of culture propounded by Raymond Williams and certain aspects of Bruno Latour’s Actor Network Theory are employed in this account. Such an approach generates a discursive, materialist and networked re-reading of the political economy of the British cultural field during 1960s, locating ‘Pop art producers’ and ‘Pop arts’ within contemporaneous hegemonic discourses, socio-economic structures and institutional narratives. An extensive analysis of archives, oral histories, interviews, artworks, policy documents and critical publications suggests that British Pop art producers were often reliant upon a shared structure of new, state-orchestrated yet commercially-funded exhibitions; sites predicated upon particular social, political and economic discourses pertinent to the 1960s. For many Pop art producers, this period also saw the development of a vibrant counternetwork of artist-led, informal exhibitions in non-art spaces such as nightclubs, cinemas, and car salesrooms which actively challenged such ‘official’ institutions. However, the ‘unofficial’ and unrecognised art world status of these exhibitions together with the informality of their contemporaneous historical recording has resulted in a lack of contemporary historicization, an omission this institutional history of British Pop arts seeks to amend.

Gross domestic product has long been criticised as a poor indicator of economic growth. In this thesis I argue that any proposed alternative for GDP cannot effect change, because GDP is not an indicator. Instead GDP is our definition of the economy, which I argue by presenting the history of how we have measured the economy through national accounts. GDP, it turns out, is simply the most recent consensus definition of what the economy is. So this is the history of how we have defined, measured and redefined the economy since its invention in the 1620s. Using primary sources I argue that the supposedly mercantilist definition of the economy was never policy relevant in the 17th century. The 18th century saw an active empirical debate and the economy was defined by Davenant's civil service, Walpole's Treasury accounts, and eventually scholars, who displaced secular policy advisors in the 1770s. Adam Smith defined an economy that dominated Britain for a century, but he adopted Physiocratic ideas which were rejected by the French government‟s own economists. British government offices continued to do empirical work in the 19th century and produced the 'official' statistics used for policy making. Marshall and then Keynes would use these offices to redefine the economy. Keynes convinced Meade, Stone and HM Treasury to redefine the economy and his idea displaced the official American definition, despite loud protestations from Kuznets. So this is a history which tries to challenge our view of the economy, by showing how we have redefined it in the past and indicates how we could do it again.

Resumo:
This thesis conducts a history of flash mob performance in India, asking how the form has evolved over a 12-year period from its first emergence in 2003. Due to its rhizomatic appearance worldwide and its close association with internet technologies and digital culture, the flash mob has typically been treated as a ‘global’ phenomenon, and theories of flash mob performance derived from Euro-American contexts are frequently glossed as generic. However, this thesis asks what a close history of the genre in India can reveal, both in terms of the performance practice itself, and as a reflection of the specific cultural moment in which it emerged. It offers an examination of the processes of adaptation and remix underway as a ‘global’ performance practice has been re-interpreted and re-enacted from this specific, local and historical perspective, and it argues that these processes demonstrate one of the ways in which performance, particularly in a digital sphere, can operate to effect a ‘politics of forgetting’ in globalising India. To do so, the thesis employs an interdisciplinary approach combining ethnographic and archival research, and draws on literature and theory from both performance studies and social sciences. The flash mob form is shown to have emerged in two distinct waves, marked by aesthetic and formal shifts which I relate to the evolving mediascape of the internet during this period. In its second wave, the genre has become spectacularised for an online video context and ‘Bollywoodised’ within an Indian context, reflecting broader practices of hybridity as well as cultural tensions surrounding national identity in globalising India. The thesis positions flash mob performance in this context as a social media practice engaged in symbolic, representational discourses which perform place and identity within a global sphere.

This thesis investigates southern China as a part of dynamic and extensive interregional networks from the third to the first millennium BC and explores the changing roles of different southern regions within the interregional relationships. This was an important transitional period for southern China as it was the time when several prominent and farreaching innovations of technologies and material culture were made or adopted in the area. Four key sets of materials – rice, bronze, ceramics and jade – are examined with a World-system perspective to reveal interregional contacts in different directions and of different nature between southern China and a number of neighbouring regions. By stressing on local responses towards different technologies and material culture in different period, an alternative narrative to that stemmed from Chinese historiography is, therefore, suggested. Instead of being a passive and 'backward' periphery in the traditional sense, southern China presents diversification of material culture over time. Many of the mechanisms of transmission and circulation in the south are characterised by 'leaked' technologies and designs, as well as 'selective adoption' and local redevelopment of material culture.

It is a common idea that men in Pre‐Colombian Peru held the socio‐political power.  Recently, many female elite burials from the Moche, Transitional and Lambayeque Periods are changing this idea.  At least in these cultures, there appears to be a continuity of burials of high status women (possibly priestesses) and the matter in which they were treated and interred. Based on this evidence, in this thesis, I explain that based on the recent available archaeological data, that I believe The Transitional Period is in fact The Early Lambayeque period, of which very little data has been excavated.

This study explored the lives of lesbian mothers with children conceived through insemination or the adoption process in an effort to understand the conflicts they encountered along their journey to motherhood and how they managed those conflicts. The qualitative study included in-depth interviews conducted with six participants. The participants’ ages ranged between 25-60 years old. Interview results were analyzed to explore participants’ narratives in regards to their experiences, relationships, identities and transformation into motherhood. This research highlights significant ongoing developments in the field of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) studies and seeks to intersect the boundaries between interpersonal and sociopolitical conflicts with the phenomena of lesbian-mothered families. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, this research provides a contribution to the interdisciplinary field of conflict resolution with a focus on the central research question: What is the common experience shared among lesbian mothers in their transformation to motherhood? The key findings of this study interrelate with themes of interpersonal conflict, role conflict, and sociopolitical conflict. The conclusions contribute to the field of conflict analysis and resolution, expand upon recent developments on LGBT family systems, and suggest new areas for further examination from the perspective of conflict analysis scholarship.

Resumo:
Minimum incomes legitimate a boundary between capital and labour, profits and needs, in the contest over value. This thesis asks how minimum income setting has changed since the 1970s. It finds answers in the documentation of rationales by state agencies in national wage cases, policy and inquiries into income support, financial regulation and the Financial Services Royal Commission. The minimum wage as a family wage was overturned, on the basis of two partly linked factors, employer pursuit of reduced labour costs, and the growing proportion of mothers in paid work at non-standard hours. A previously strong union movement in response to unemployment crises, laid down its power to defend the minimum wage. The minimum wage safety net from 1996 became a minimum wage for a single person, requiring the state through income support to underwrite the cost of raising children in low waged households, but without compromising current labour supply. The household rather than the wage earner became the object of both public policy and financial capital’s search for value. Finance’s invention of income surplus assessment for contracting home loan repayments placed new pressures on household time and consumption, reinforcing the labour supply imperative. It also posed a novel threat to financial system stability, and placed the setting of minimum living standards as a boundary not just between labour as employee and employer capital, but also between labour as household and financial capital. The state’s position on meeting needs through minimum incomes requires trade-offs that historically were dominated by social and industrial order, and which have more recently been refined as economic policy for labour supply and particularly financial stability. Minimum incomes are linked to labour’s dual position as a cost of production and a critical source of financial flows. This new terrain for valuing labour sharpens the contradictions to be managed by public policy that accepts profitability as the underlying imperative, seeking stability of flows in both labour markets and money markets. It also poses challenges for labour to reshape itself as a conscious agent able to assert its needs over profitability, and to challenge the hold of capital over livelihoods.

Resumo:
Despite significant recent improvements, maternal mortality remains high in Malawi. To address this, the Government prioritised strategies promoting skilled birth attendance. However, in a country where 80% of the population resides in rural areas, there are tremendous barriers to institutional deliveries. Historically rural women have been supported in childbirth by Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs), and by skilled birth attendants (SBAs) at the health facility. In the past, TBAs were trained to help bridge the gaps in provision and accessibility of care but in the 1990’s, the WHO recommended halting their training because it was perceived as ineffective for maternal mortality reduction. In 2007, the Government of Malawi issued Community Guidelines to promote skilled birth attendance and banned TBA utilization for routine deliveries. This grounded theory qualitative study used interviews and focus groups to explore community actors’ perceptions of the 2007 Policy Guidelines and their implementation, and how the Policy affected the decisions and actions of rural women regarding their delivery care. Findings from this study indicate that although all actors may agree that delivering at facilities is safest when complications occur, this does not necessarily ensure their compliance. Women, men and TBAs particularly, perceived the Policy as prescriptive. Furthermore, the implementation of the policy aggravated some of the barriers women already faced. Issues of disrespectful and neglectful care at facilities also partly led women towards non-compliance. Furthermore, a view from the ground demonstrated that the Policy had led to a rupture of linkages between TBAs and SBAs, which have had a detrimental effect on the continuum of care. This study helps fill an important gap in research concerning maternal health policy implementation analysis in LICs, by focusing on the perceptions of those at the receiving end of policy change, and on their needs, and aspirations.

From amongst modern inquiries into what constitutes the political, and within the current environment of hostility towards what the field of theology can offer to its study, Oliver O’Donovan emerges with his unique brand of political theology. His method of inquiry, resourced by Scripture and Christian tradition, and predicated on Christology, offers a construal of authority distilled from the Bible’s own account of God’s kingly rule as understood within the biblical narrative of salvation history, with momentous implications for the realm of the political, in particular as relates to the categories of authority and society and their interplay. Given O’Donovan’s manifest interest in the Book of Revelation and the centrality within the book’s narrative of themes intrinsic to O’Donovan’s political theology, the Apocalypse, we argue, offers the ultimate ground for a discussion about the political in the terms suggested by O’Donovan. In undertaking this exercise we find that the Apocalypse’s own construal of authority is in fact about divine authority conceived around the throne of God, the seat of divine power, which has undergone a Christological shift brought about by the exalted Jesus. We then go on to argue that throughout the Apocalypse a correlation gradually becomes apparent between the divine authority and a liturgical sociality defined by the presence of the exalted Jesus. This correlation of divine authority and liturgical sociality which is mediated by the very same exalted Jesus we have called the Fellowship of the Throne. And it is this Fellowship of Throne, we argue, which must now become the ultimate horizon of the political.

This study presents a detailed examination of the Arab League's history, development, structure and roles in an effort to understand the cause of its failure as a regional security organisation. The research's point of departure is a questioning of the nature and scope of this failure in terms of the interplay between the conditions under which it was formed and the many actors and dynamics that had a long term-impact on the prospects for the League. To this end, the study looks at the League's conditions of emergence and Arab-Arab relations with the focus on Arab national security as the main concept determining its security role. The research synthesises methods of analysis from the existing literature and schools of thought so as to identify where and why failure and success occurred in relation to international relations theories, the security and international organisations literature, and comparable international models. The development and conditions affecting the League as discussed in the research demonstrate that none of the existing broad theories or approaches can fully explain the League's failure; however, the constructivist approach, although never before applied in this context, is shown to offer the most relevant approach for explaining this organisation and its unique parameters. The research also examines the role played by the Arab League in regional peacekeeping and conflict prevention in the context of Arab national security, with Palestine as a case study.

Payne, Alistair J. "Redefine and reterritorialise : painting as an interdisciplinary form". Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2005. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/5659/.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
Any examination of painting as a practice or discipline must necessarily analyse the philosophical underpinning of formalist modes of thinking. Although contemporary practices are not as driven by the inherent rules of the discipline, they are still dependent upon the theoretical foundations within which they work, and effectively this leads to a retention of medium and material specificity. In contrast, a different methodological approach potentially changes the way in which painting can be thought and is explored within the thesis. The proposition of a particular type of methodological investigation challenges painting, attempting to change its alignment with different mediums or disciplines, by locating the relationship of theoretical models and their direct paradigmatic constraints on practice. In contrast to an Hegelian philosophical approach, embedded within the formalist critique, Gilles Deleuze's philosophy is present throughout the thesis as a catalyst for re-negotiating both the spaces of theory and the realisation of a painting practice that shares a commonality with Bergsonian and Deleuzian motifs of the 'virtual' rather than the boundaried rule-based and medium-specific limitations of previous formalisms. The notion of interdisciplinarity stems from this particular philosophical investigation, and proposes painting as an intrinsically interdisciplinary practice. The motivation is to locate the relationship of different theoretical and philosophical models - including the fold, the notion of 'technique', memory, the virtual and duration - in order to establish new ways for thinking concerning painting, and importantly how it can operate in an interdisciplinary manner. In particular the idea of 'change' and 'the new' in relation to Deleuzian 'becomings', in contrast to Hegelian dialectics, drives the theoretical investigation, and how this challenges the idea of painting now. The research thinks through these integral component elements in terms of painting and analyses various examples of artworks and architectural projects (stemming from Deleuze's ideas including Greg Lynn and Bernard Cache), incorporating a new alignment with notions of spatiality and duration, which in turn constitutes a reterritorialisation of both painting and thinking as practices.

Resumo:
This study posits that market capitalism as a whole, despite the promising global economic growth patterns and prospects, is subject to a set of factors, referred to as system disruptors, which are gradually eroding its benefits and growth possibilities and eventually will compromise the entire system functioning. The World Bank, the UN, global business leaders and scholars alike, all seems to agree that the present state remarks a distinctive upward leap with respect to a situation of mere economic recovery. This means that, while systemic weaknesses that contributed to the 2008-2009 financial crisis have been more or less efficiently mitigated, as we move on from a state of recovery to one of more stable growth there is room to address those matters that still hinder a balanced and sustainable development along economic, social and environmental dimensions. The first chapter of this research is focused on presenting the building blocks of the market capitalist model to then delineate a general overview of the current state of global economy. Then, it moves on to discuss system disruptors and their actual and potential negative impacts on the model. Next, a possible course of action is suggested in order to mitigate their effects while reinforcing the global market system itself. Specifically, in the second chapter, it is assumed that it is a duty of business companies, not just of governments or NGOs, to play an active role in defining long-term sustainable strategies that will enable their survival in the first place, while reinvigorating a weakened and unstable system and thus pushing the whole model onwards. To do so, it is required to break down those system disruptors into simpler and more directly addressable business challenges to be dealt with effectively by business firms. In this sense, I selected just those areas of interest more directly related to dimensions under a company’s control, and therefore can be translated into proper business challenges. The third chapter expands these assumptions by suggesting that, for business firms to be able to face those challenges by planning and implementing sustainable strategies, first there needs to be awareness of the issue, followed by strong goal alignment between owners, management and stakeholders. This alignment can and must be achieved, supported and communicated through the core governance body of a company: the board of directors. Drawing from a quite recent body of literature on the subject, it is assumed that the way boards are structured has a direct effect on business performance. In line with this logic, a set of directors’ characteristics are identified as fundamental for such businesses in order to identify the risks caused by system disruptors and planning sustainable long-term strategies.

Grigoriadou, Parthena.

This thesis reconsiders geometry within the field of contemporary art, trying to analyze and define a change in the nature of its meaning and value that in our hypothesis of work began in the 60s of the last century. This study aspires to question, paralelly, the classic conception of geometry within the most recent art, as the ideal order, representation of the “pure” and “neutral” form, both attributes belonging to a timeless logic rather than real-time experience. Throughout this thesis we have studied how the projective meaning of geometric art has changed over the last decades, within the evolution of contemporary painting and sculpture, and how these variations in concept have, consequently, a different meaning in reception, the manner of presentation and the spectator’s perception of the work. To develop the present research I have used elements of formal analysis in a representative group of paintings and sculptures, and their expressive interests. These works have renounced an autonomist or ideal conception of art and, on the contrary, favour the effect of geometry in a physical interface with the real space of the experience, social or cultural, thus differing from the representational and mental framework of the idealist model. From this perspective, I initially examine the works of various North American artists from the 80s, for whom the geometric abstraction, for their critical attitude, is a new coded device, with a material basis, which organizes references to contemporary society and culture, far from a formalist “pure” language that tries to separate itself from material culture. Although it was in the eighties when the public discussion on the “crisis” of geometry was laid out, in the decades of the 60s and 70s the first indication of the “crisis” had already come up. In the United States some representatives of the minimalism of this period started, in a more or less conscious way, to link geometry to the material production of the industrial society of that time, in parallel, others developed a critical and social analysis of cultural power, implicit in their signifiers: shapes, materials, scale etc. From 1980, during the decade of the 90s and until the present day, that dominant image of geometry, often aggressive or brutal, would radically change with the appearance of a new type of geometrical works, to a certain degree the product of this post-industrial society, tied to consumption, to digital technology and to entertainment. In the hands of this generation of artists, not so tied as the previous to the industrial experience of the materials as to that of the computer and its possibilities as image technology –allowing the projection and work in the characteristic fields of new non-Euclidian geometries: fractals, topological or in the integration of natural models- geometry emerges, in this way, as powerful tool for artistic experimentation generating increasingly complex spaces and shapes in unlimited variations. These new works, be they installations or algorithmic or sculptural projects, are constituted within dynamic, interactive and multisensorial surroundings. Geometry is thus shown as a stimulating, creative project and process, capable of triggering a fragile, multiple and open engagement between the work as a material and experimental system and the spectator who thinks, feels and acts. This comprehensive reconsideration of geometry would work as much on a cultural codes basis, these being the representational registers which make up our image of reality and define our experience, as on the basis of a complex and new instrumentality. In other words, the underlying geometry would be considered as a different artistic experience, with marked characteristics and singularity. The next question will be then, of course, how we should view and reconsider these new possibilities of artistic creation.

With the rapid development of the urbanization in China, more and more migrants who are mainly from the relatively poor areas move to big cities in order to obtain the economic benefits. However, rather than living condition of migrants and rural development, people pay more attention to the economic development of the city. Migrants cannot achieve reasonable living condition in the urban context, at the same time, they may lose their land and source of income if they come back hometown although they have devoted themselves to the construction of big cities and economic development of rural areas. I analyze the characters of migrants’ living conditions in the big cities and the transfer of labors in rural areas, claiming that we should consider the situation of migrants scientifically when we are conducting the urban planning and urbanization. To explain the phenomenon of migration intuitively, I choose the Zhejiang village in Beijing and four villages in Henan Province as the example to study and analysis in the following. Firstly, Beijing is the capital of China so that it is the most popular place for migrants to move in. Zhejiang village is the famous historic problem in China and there are a lot of literatures and data collections that can be useful for my thesis. Secondly, Henan Province has the largest population in China and the migration is popular there. After the case study and survey, I analyze the reasons of the problem from different perspective such as government, economic differences, migrants’ education and so on. The paper suggests the solutions to solve the problems from relevant aspects.

Elements within the physical space are transformed through natural processes that change their properties over time. These transformations are part of our everyday experiences that are often informative, influential or controversial. We are increasingly replacing interactions of the physical space to the Web, possibly losing opportunities for experiencing subtleties within these physical transformations. The goal of the thesis is to develop, understand and evaluate a framework for defining transformations on the Web; and establish a guideline to inspire visual and software design on the Web to leverage their socially influenced, time-based behavior.
