This research aims at various methods that can be used in the interpretation of the Quran. This research involves extensive qualitative analysis of the existing literature. Its main purpose is to conduct a comprehensive review and explanation of available information by referring to a variety of sources. The main objective of this qualitative literature review is to collect, evaluate, and synthesize existing knowledge regarding a particular topic, with a particular focus on the characteristics and qualities of the Quran. The data collection process includes careful textual analysis, data retrieval, and systematic organization of information. The results of data analysis show that the Qur'an as kalamullah has the highest and noblest position as a guide to human life. Efforts to understand the meaning of the verses of the Qur'an are called tafsir, certainly according to the limits of the ability of each scholar, because it is impossible to explore and extract the meaning of the verses of the Qur'an with absolute truth. There are various methods that can be used in interpreting the Quran including the maudhui' (thematic) method, tahlīliy method, ijmāliy, muqāran are still widely used today by modern mufassir, including Indonesian mufassir

Quranic therapy is an approach practiced by individuals who suffer from psychospiritual problems to self-heal. Al-Quran possesses spiritual values which can assist in treatment. This approach indirectly involves linguistic elements as the therapeutic basic medium by engaging in recovery and treatment activities such as reading, recitation and teaching the meaning of al-Quran. However, non-holistic implementation of linguistic element in Quranic therapy practice reduced the effect of patients psychological and spiritual recovery due to the lack of understanding of and appreciation to the messages of al-Quran. Therefore, this study is aimed at examining the relation of linguistic elements to the Quranic message being conveyed and revealing the importance of al-Quran as a psychospiritual therapy medium. This study is a qualitative research work using content and thematic analysis. Content analysis was classified according to themes based on the linguistic aspects of al-Quran (phonology, morphology and semantics). It was found that phonology (sound) reinforced appreciation of the message of al-Quran through mental effects of Al-Quran reciter and listener. Morphology (word structure) of al-Quran was also identified as the foundation to the meaning or interpretation of al-Quran. Meanwhile, comprehension and appreciation of all messages being conveyed in al-Quran require a mastery in semantics (meaning) because the meaning of al-Quran is influenced by various factors. In short, the linguistic aspects are closely linked in influencing the message being delivered besides having the role of reinforcing the understanding and appreciation of content of al-Quran that enables patient recovery from the psychospiritual problems. This study carries an implication towards the role of the Quranic language in complementing psychospiritual therapy.

How to present a exegeticalmethod of the Quran that can be consumed by children is a developmental idea in the scientificexegesis of the Quran in general and particularlyin the Islamic Religious Education (PAI), especially in the study of the exegesis of the Quran. Therefore, Tafsir Qur'an untuk Anakanak (The Exegesis of the Quran for Children) by Afif Muhammad comes to respond to the problem when it is now very rarely the literature that deals with the interpretation for children today. Therefore, this paper will discuss how the exegeticalmethod offered by Afif Muhammad in his work, and most importantly is, how to present the characteristics of the exegesis of the Holy Quran that is ideal for children in the perspective of Islamic Religious Education (PAI).The result of this research reveals that the ijmāli method with dialogical language in Tafsir Qur'an untuk Anak-anak can be used as a solution to improve the lecture method in PAI so as to create dynamic and effective interrelations between educators and learners in the learning process. The study the stylistics of the Qur'an cannot be separated from the concept of i'jaz al-Quran as a form of uniqueness and privilege of the language of Qur'an. When Qur'an was delivered to the Arab society, they had used high language and literature. By the emergence of the art of reading the Quran (nagham al-Quran) around the world, and it is believed as one of the forms of appreciation of the Qoran, Muslims in Indonesia receive and appreciate it with pleasure. The Musabaqoh Tilawatil Quran (MTQ), whish is held by the governments and non-governmental institutions of all levels, has been carried out on a regular and continuous basis. As a religious text, the Qur'an has a very high literary dimension. The Quran also has some aesthetic and musical-messaging dimensions. This paper attempts to discuss the stylistic styles of language in the aspects of the art of reading the Qoran with a single voice, without the accompaniment of musical instruments, and unrelated to musical tone. This is specifically used for tazyin al-Saut bi tilawah al-Quran. The approach used in this study is Al-Uslub al-Adabi or Literary Stilistica, which focuses on the level of persistence or phonology, which includes phonetics and phonemics. Phonetics is divided into three parts, namely; articulatory phonetic, acoustic phonetics, and auditory phonetics. The discussion on literary stylistics is cannot be separated from emotional aspects, not logical aspects. The analysis of literary stylistics in the art of reading al-Quran (nagham al-Quran) produces the effect of the reader's feelings, sensational feelings and spiritual feeling. Spiritual feeling is divided into religious, ethical, aesthetic, intellectual, social, and personal feeling. Perbedaan susunan ayat Al-Qur’an dengan urutan diturunkannya Al-Qur’an menarik untuk diteliti. The difference in the arrangement of the verses of the Qur'an with the order in which the Qur'an was revealed is interesting to study. Namely Izza Rohman who studied the comparison of the order of the verses of the Qur'an between the muskhaf and its occurrence. The purpose of this study is to re-explore by linking it with other studies that complement the study of Izza Rohman. The research method used is a literature approach that uses the existing literature and then links it into a single unit. The results showed that the order of the surahs and verses of the Qur'an became the inspiration and object of study whose different sequences had basic reasons. The discovery of the regularity and harmony of the number of surahs and verses in the Al-Quran. This order and harmony shows the miracles of the Al-Quran seen from the number of tartib surahs and verses. One of them is the study of the peculiarities of the numbers 7 and 19. From these numbers, several secrets of letter numbers and verse numbers can be revealed. In addition, there is also a study of the bismillah lafadz which contains the numbers 7 and 19 as well.

From fourteenth century medieval literature to contemporary American and African American literature, researchers have singled out and analyzed writing from every genre that is prophetic in nature, predicting or warning about events, both revolutionary and dire, to come. One twentieth-century American whose work embodies the essence of warning and foretelling through history-laden literature is Toni Morrison. This modern-day literary prophet reinterprets eras gone by through what she calls “re-memory” in order to guide her readers, and her society, to a greater understanding of the consequences of slavery and racism in America and to prompt both races to escape the pernicious effects of this heritage. Several critics have recognized and written about Morrison’s unique style of prophetic prose. These critics, however, have either taken a general cursory analysis of her complete body of works or they are only focused on one of her texts as a site of evidence. Despite the many critical essays and journal articles that have been written about Morrison as literary prophet, no critic has extensively investigated Morrison’s major works by way of textual analysis under this subject, to discuss Morrison prophetic prose, her motivation for engaging in a form of prophetic writing, and the context of this writing in a wider general, as well as an African-American, tradition. This dissertation takes on a more comprehensive, cross-sectional analysis of her works that has been previously employed, concentrating on five of Morrison’s major novels: The Bluest Eye, Song of Solomon, Beloved, Jazz and Paradise, in an order to assess how Morrison develops and infuses warnings and admonitions of biblical proportions. This investigation seeks to reveal Morrison’s motivation to prophecy to Americans, black and white, the context in which she engages with her historical and contemporary subjects, and the nature of the admonitions to present and future action she offers to what she sees as a contemporary generation of socially and historically oblivious African Americans, using literary prophecy as the tool by which to accomplish her objectives. This dissertation also demonstrates—by way of textual analysis and literary theory—the evolution through five novels of Morrison’s development as a literary prophet.

For a literary critic preparing a scholarly edition of a text like this within an epistème that disparages the theory underpinning it for being tainted with the gestural idealism of 1968 and the neon-glare of 1980s high postmodernism, the crucial question is how to reconcile the commitment to authenticity ingrained in historicist textual studies (perhaps the critic’s only viable disciplinary inheritance) with the author’s implicit antagonism to any such quietist approach. The encounter inevitably becomes a battle of wills. In the course of the current project, this theoretical struggle escalates exponentially as doubts concerning the authenticity (and indeed the existence) of both writer and manuscript are multiplied. If a thesis can be retrospectively extrapolated from this project, it is the argument that fiction is demonstrably a tractable forum for research in the Arts and Social Sciences: all the more tractable for its anti-authenticity. The critic’s loss is the novelist’s gain. Specifically, in this case, the faithful historian of late twentieth century literatures, languages and cultures can solve the key dilemma of the subject by working under the auspices of Creative Writing. Only in this way can justice be done to the most cogent intellectual trend of the posmodern period (perhaps its defining feature): one that revelled in its own pluralities, ambiguities and contradictions, and resisted all the unifying, teleological models of ‘history’ that had been implicated in the century’s terrible ‘final solutions’. In other words, only fiction can tell the history of a culture that rejects that history. If this means condoning forgery… so be it.

The story of Joseph (in the Bible), Yusuf (in the Quran), has inspired literatures in many languages. This paper explores how some Swahili writers and translators have dealt with this inspiration, the implications for their language use and the way they have interpreted Yusuf as a theme for their writings. After a brief introduction on the importance of the story itself and putting the focus on a major theme of the plot, the following works are discussed: the new Quran translation by Sh Ali Muhsin (1995), a short novel by Mzee Salim A. Kibao (1975), two short stories by Amur bin Nasur il-Omeiri (1894), the utenzi Qissat-il Yusuf (l913) and Abdulrazak Gurnah\'s English written novel Paradise (1995). The paper concludes with the observation that in analyzing how these Swahili writers have integrated the story of Yusuf in their writings, prose as well as poetry, it becomes clear that attempts in defining what is ‘foreign’ (or ‘Oriental’) and what is ‘indigenous’ (or ‘African’) are bound to fail.

Herrag, EL Hassane. "The ideological factor in the translation of sensitive issues from the Quran into English, Spanish and Catalan".

The purposes of this thesis are principally about investigating how some Quranic issues are translated into English, Spanish and Catalan with focus on the intervention of the ideological factor in this translation taking into account the influence of the ideology of each of the selected translators on the original text in its taget version. Additionally, the planned purposes help to establish four hypotheses which are confirmed through a theoretical approach related to the contributions of some eminent scholars in the field of translation studies, especially the theories that are about descriptivism and ideolgy as in the case of the manipulation school whcih permits to understand how a source text is manipulated in its target version and also how other factors interven in its manipulation. As for the practicle part of this thesis, there are examples that are divided into issues that touch upon different Quranic topics and they are studied on the basis of the descriptive and the comparative model which allows to analyse them as they are in their taget versions and not as they must be otherwise the study becomes prescriptive instead of descriptive. Consequently, it is observed that these examples are affected negatively and they change the original meaning of Quranic verses and messages through the use of translation procedures, notably omission, literal translation and amplification. On the other side, it is concluded that Muslim translators pay more attention to the translation of meanings so as to make their translation meaning-oriented and to avoid manipulation and distortion. Morover, it is understood that the ideological factor is not only noticed in the use of translation procedures, but also in the religious influence of each translator and his intention beyond his translation as well as the academic and the exegetical references employed in each translation. In this respect it is observed that Muslim translators exclusively rely on Quranic exegesis of Suni scholars as they are sponsored by Saudi Arabia. On the contrary, non-Muslim translators diversify their references by relying on Suni and Shii exegesis in additon to the opinions of Orientalists and all that is reflected in their translations.

Thesis (DPhil (Ancient Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008.
Since time immemorial and throughout the centuries up to the present, the struggle between Good and Evil has played a cardinal role in the “cultural web” of mankind. In the various religions, this dimension of life is linked to the theological issue of human suffering and need in the light of Divine Omnipotence and Grace. Some of the earliest prophets/compilers/authors expressed their own perspectives on this ongoing conflict and burning question. This comparative research stems from a statement by the well-known Iranologist, Mary Boyce. She described the origin of the Christian faith as a new religion that developed out of Judaism, enriched by contact with the old Persian religion, Zoroastrianism. Other researchers also described various aspects of the dualism, eschatology, angelology and demonology, as well as the cosmogony and purity laws, as “obvious” similarities. However, researchers have not yet reached consensus on the possible influence exercised by Zoroastrianism on Judaism and the early Christian writings. The aim of the study is to make a contribution to the ongoing debate from another perspective. Writings from the religions are juxtaposed in full, and analysed and compared according to the war theme and components arising from the writings themselves. A holistic approach offers a more structured starting -point for further research rather to opposing aspects randomly from a large variety of texts. The holistic approach draws attention to similarities as well as differences. Keywords out of each analysis of a component have been placed in a framework to present the summarising comparison more compactly. Historical and literary contexts play an important role in a comparative study. The writings of the three religions originated in four major eras: the Bronze Age/the Sasanian Period, the Hellenistic Era and the Roman Era. The characteristic dualism of Zoroastrianism is limited to the eschatological/apocalyptic war as it is found in the Gathas of Zarathustra. References are also made to the “later” apocalyptic writing, the Bahman Yasht. The most relevant writing in the Judaism (Qumran) is the War Scroll. Richard Bauckham has described Revelations as the “Christian War Scroll”. The analysis of the various aspects shows that core principles in the religions underlie the war themes. Some of the proper names contain defining elements in the determination of dualism and monotheism. Planning and weapons are main components in the strategy of the war - the “revelation” of the modus operandi. The eschatology is caught up in the ultimate end of the war. In the final chapter, the main corresponding elements are placed on a “scale” and “weighed”. Although no further “lexical links” – the weight-bearing criteria of García Martínez – have been found in this study, the amount of corresponding aspects in merely one text per religion is significant. Differences and unique imagery/symbolism put each writing in its own time-slot and framework.

The importance of the Qur'an can be gauged from the fact that it was the first book which Muslim scholars concerned themselves with and by virtue of the belief of Muslims in general that it is the verbatim Word of Alllih culminated in their associating utmost reverence to the Qur'an in its written form and oral recitation. Thus, it is for this very reason that great concern was directed to the correct reading and pronunciation of the Arabic Qur'anic text Moreover, in view of the fact that there were several Arabic dialects and no declensions were at that time assigned to the text of the Qur'an, scholars of the Qur'an found it imperative to assign correct reading and recitation of the Arabic text of the Qur'an. Scholars before al-JazarI's time assigned several rules for the correct rendering of the Qur' anic recitation. This was necessary because incorrect reading, recitation and pronunciation of the text of the Qur'an could result in changing the meaning of the text thus nullifying what was originally intended. , lmiim lbn al-Jazari's main contribution in this field is that after surveying the previous works on the subject, further refined and articulated the discipline of reading and recitation of the Qur'an. Hence, lmiim lbn al-Jazarf's works on this important discipline made an everlasting impact ,on the later history of discipline of the recitation of the Qur'an. Several of Imdm lbn al-Jazarf's works were published and there are still several of them which have been preserved in manuscript forms in various libraries throughout the 2 Muslim world, suchas in Turkey, Syria, Iran andEgypt Thesemanuscripts are not easily accessible to the general publicin our present times. The objectives of this studyare to: 1. trace the origin and development of 'ilm al-Qirli'at (the Science of Qur'anic Recitation); 2. give an account of the life ofImam Ibn al-Jazarf; 3. survey the worksImdm Ibn al-Jazari; and 4. to examine and evaluate the contributions of lmiim Ibn al-Jazari on later scholars/works.

Abstract Lashkar-e-Tayyaba (LeT) relies upon three main Islamic sources for the arguments it advances in its literature, namely, the Quran (scripture), Hadees (quotations attributed to Muhammad), and Seerat (the biography of Muhammad). The Quran and the traditional Islamic narratives about Muhammad in the Seerat and Hadees have had a universal and spiritual hold on Muslims through the ages, evidenced by the extent to which they are invoked for political, social, and religious legitimation, no less in jihad narratives. Within these sources, LeT locates the jihad imperative, proselytization as a way to organize one’s personal life, the distinction between asceticism and piety, the rejection of the notion that jihad is an internal struggle against the ego, and the rejection of rebellion and political activism against an Islamic government. Given the cultural valence of these Islamic sources, it is necessary to contextualize them in order to understand the narrative LeT charts for their literary audience. In this chapter, we discuss each of these three sources within its historical context in order to give the reader a clear idea of its content and weight. We conclude with a discussion of how each of these sources is used in one of LeT’s foundational texts, namely, ‘Why Are We Waging Jihad?’.

Abstract To begin with a clarification: I speak of “teaching Quranic Studies” rather than of “teaching the Quran” in order to emphasize the range and complexity of this subject field. The Quran, like the New Testament, is not a big book, but Quranic Studies, like Biblical Studies, is a vast, multilayered discipline, one which no single scholar can hope to master in all its intricacy and diversity Within the field of Religious Studies, the status and scope of Biblical Studies are readily manifest. In North America, the Society for Biblical Literature (SBL), with a membership of nearly 7,000, almost equals the size of the American Academy of Religion (AAR), a professional organization that purports to represent scholars of all other scriptural and religious traditions combined.

Abstract This chapter presents translated excerpts from Abul Hassan Mubbashir Ahmed Rabbani’s Masalah-i takfir aur is ke usul o zavabit (The Problem of Takfir and its Principles and Regulations). This is one of the most important expositions of a significant difference between Lashkar-e-Tayyaba and other Salafist organizations and between LeT and the other Deobandi militant groups operating in and from Pakistan. LeT, as this peculiar document illustrates, often conflicts with other Salafi organizations because LeT rejects the widespread practice of takfir and the violence that accompanies such a declaration. The author describes a conflict with a Salafist scholar who is inclined towards Al Qaeda. What is apparent is that the Al Qaeda-inclined scholar holds LeT in little regards because of its demurral to practise takfir. Rabbani repudiates this by mobilizing highly regarded Hadees, commentary, and passages from the Quran to defend LeT’s position.

Abstract This chapter presents the authors’ translation of Lashkar-e-Tayyaba’s foundational document ‘Hum Kyon Jihad Kar Rahen Hain’ (‘Why Are We Waging Jihad?’) by Bin Mohammad, which lays out the parameters of the organization’s commitment to violence and to domestic tranquillity within Pakistan. Written in a Socratic style, the narrator answers a quester’s queries, by recounting events in the Quran, Sunnat, and Hadees, as well as historical and contemporary events. The pamphlet addresses so-called pious Muslims who refute the necessity of waging jihad. Bin Muhammad identifies who should be the object of jihad outside of Pakistan and why. He argues that if an individual is kalima-go (i.e. has uttered the affirmation that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad are his prophets), they should not be killed, but should be rehabilitated through dawah. This puts the organization in direct opposition to the Deobandi groups and Islamic State which practise takfir.

Resumo:
Jihad (‘struggle’, ‘striving’) in the Qur’an and Sunnah is a term with multiple inflections. The reiterated Qur’anic phrase al-jihad fi sabil Allah (‘striving in the path of God’) allows for that striving to be accomplished in myriad ways. After surveying a range of exegeses of relevant Qur’anic verses and early hadith works, the paper shows how fully Fethullah Gülen’s empha- sis on jihad as a means of personal, moral, spiritual and social renewal and transformation is in line with the earliest meanings found in exegetical and hadith works. Such a traditional, historical understanding runs counter to recent, polemical assertions that jihad is a monova- lent term requiring unremitting armed combat against non-Muslims. The paper demonstrates that contemporary Muslim thinkers like Gülen, who offer a more expansive and multi-facet- ed reading of what it means to ‘strive in the path of God’, are harking back to earlier, and thus more historically authentic, understandings of jihad and its moral purview. The Arabic term jihad has primarily come to mean “armed struggle/combat” and is frequently translated into English as “holy war.” And yet a close scrutiny of the occurrence of this term in the Qur’an and early hadith literature in particular demonstrates that this exclusive under- standing of the term cannot be supported for the formative period of Islam. In the Qur’an the phrase “fi sabil Allah,” meaning “in the path of God” or “for the sake of God,” is frequently conjoined to al-jihad. The full Arabic expression “al-jihad fi sabil Allah” means “striving/ struggling in the path of God” in the broadest sense. In the supporting hadith and exegetical literature, this human struggle for the noblest purpose – that is, to win God’s approval– is manifested in multiple ways. This paper will discuss the multiple meanings of jihad as evident in the Qur’an, exegeses, and hadith literature, particularly from the early period. After having established the broad range of meanings assigned to jihad in these sources, I will then proceed to discuss Fethullah Gülen’s understanding of jihad and its relevance for contemporary Muslims. It will be argued that his understanding of jihad replicates the polyvalence of this term in Qur’an and hadith literature and that his emphasis on both its spiritual and physical dimensions is timely and relevant today, especially in the wake of the appropriation of this term as a relentlessly mili- tant activity by contemporary extremist groups.
