Since the landmark Tarasoff decision, courts have expanded third-party liability to psychotherapists for the harm done to others by patients in their care. While this is an issue which affects all psychotherapists, it has particular importance for those treating sexual offenders. Recent advances in assessment techniques provide the psychotherapist with a more accurate profile of the patient and his potential victim(s). While this improvement in diagnostic accuracy affords greater potential for more focused treatment, it may also increase the psychotherapist's risk for incurring liability should the patient recidivate during treatment. This article examines some of the possible legal implications relevant to treating the sexual offender.

This article addresses the thorny issue of the psychologist or psychotherapist's values or ethical orientation. The suggestion is made that certain aspects of Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytical theory provide the resources to overcome the obstacle of arbitrariness or relativism faced by psychotherapists who unavoidably have to take an ethical stance — implicitly if not explicitly — in relation to clients' or analysands' lives and decisions. The dilemma faced by the psychotherapist is recontructed and specific aspects of the poststructuralist psychoanalytical theory of Lacan are addressed. These include the function of the subject's position in the symbolic register (in contrast to the imaginary register of the ego), the role of the unconscious as the ‘discourse of the Other’, of narrative and of repressed signifiers as ethical ‘anchoring points’. Crucially, however, the implications of the register of the ‘real’ for the ethics of the psychoanalyst as psychotherapist are added. These, offer invaluable means of overcoming the dilemma of ethical relativism faced by psychotherapists.

A large number of named psychotherapies provides clinicians with a broad catalogue from which to pick and choose intervention techniques. Today, many psychotherapists claim to work eclectically, referring to the use of varying intervention techniques both within and betweenthe different psychotherapeutic traditions. The availability of many psychotherapeutic techniques can indeed be beneficial, but the question remains as to how the psychotherapist chooses one technique over another depending on the circumstances. In this paper, we willpresent an analytic framework aimed at providing psychotherapists with a navigation tool with which to qualify the choice and coordination of psychotherapeutic techniques. The foundation for this tool is the concept of qualified self-determination, which points to some of the basic competencies necessary for humans to navigate within the technical, social, and personal domains of life. On this basis, we outline how different psychotherapies are differentially aimed at developing these competencies. Finally, we present specific examples onwhere and how this framework can be used, including how it can guide the client case formulation, and how it can facilitate productive collaboration at network meetings.

The purpose of the study was to discern the empathy ability of psychotherapists for childfree female clients with intersectional identities. Each participating psychotherapist was randomly assigned to view one of four mock video sessions with a childfree woman of varying age and socioeconomic status (SES). Psychotherapists rated their ability to empathize for the woman in their assigned mocked video. An analysis of variance revealed that psychotherapists experienced higher empathy ability for a childfree woman of younger age and lower SES than for an older and upper-SES childfree woman. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Introduction. The full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation on February 24, 2022 has changed the history of Ukraine and the life of every Ukrainian. Millions of people, saving their lives, were forced to move to safer places In Ukraine as well as other countries. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians went to defend their country from the invaders. A huge number of people found themselves in the occupation and suffered tortures, captivity, abuse, hunger, and terrible wanderings. It is obvious that the war and its consequences have radically changed the paradigm of psychological assistance and increased the role of a psychologist/psychotherapist, which makes the problem of psychologists/psychotherapists' mental health resilience extremely important. After all, the effectiveness of psychological help depends on psychologists/psychotherapists' psychological and emotional stability. Aim. To formulate the first reflexive thoughts about the change in the paradigm of psychological and psychotherapeutic work in the context of war and the strategy of maintaining and developing psychologists and psychotherapists' resilience. Results. The article analyzes the peculiarities of psychologists/psychotherapists' work in the conditions of the Russia's war against Ukraine, discusses some transformations in the paradigm of mental and psychotherapeutic help in a crisis situation, the most common symptoms and clients' requests over the past six months as well as the dynamics of clients' psychological and emotional states. The author also considers the changes in the therapeutic relationship between the psychologist/psychotherapist and the client as well as the strategy of maintaining and developing psychologists/psychotherapists' resilience and mental health needed to preserve their professional identity. IntroductionMost experienced psychotherapists use an eclectic approach in their practice, combining techniques of different schools of psychotherapy to treat their patients. However, there are no good teaching models to train the new generation of psychotherapists in the technique of psychotherapy integration. FEP is a form of psychotherapy that combines techniques from four different psychotherapies: psychodynamics, CBT, IPT and supportive therapy. It also incorporates mindfulness, motivational interviewing, exercise and nutrition. A strong therapeutic alliance is crucial to the success of FEP. Techniques are tailored to the patient's current clinical state. Several techniques from different psychotherapies may be used in the same session. The therapist is empathic, flexible adaptive to the patient's needs and assumes an active role in the therapeutic process.ObjectiveTo present a model of psychotherapy integration that can be used by psychotherapists in their clinical practice.AimsWe aim to present a model of psychotherapy integration that can be taught and implemented by psychotherapists in their clinical practice.ResultsWe present ten case examples were FEP was effective clinically and we compare it to the standard of care received by these patients and show the savings to the healthcare system.ConclusionThe results of our study suggest that FEP could be a cost effective treatment that could be added to the psychotherapists toolbox. Teaching and training methods, like manuals and workshops can be developed to train the new generation of psychotherapists.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Insight-oriented psychotherapies, like psychoanalysis, as the most systematic method, and short-term dynamic psychotherapies, as the related compressed techniques, have a shared goal, which includes restoration of insight in patient by the help of a psychoanalyst or other associated psychotherapists. While there are many psychotherapists, who introduce themselves as psychodynamic therapists, a lot of criticizers believe in futility of analytic methods. Though there is no absolute guarantee of the effectiveness of any therapeutic method, whether pharmaceutical or psychological, it seems that based on physiognomies of systematic methods, some positive consequences can be reasonably expectable, which can be quantifiable by available evidence and records, too.

IntroductionIn the context of the importance of psychotherapy in mental health care the aim of our study is to highlight the importance of supervision as an integral part thereof.AimWe analyze the relationship between the assessment of the quality of supervision and the perceived self-efficacy of the psychotherapist as one of the antecedents of decision-making in the psychotherapeutic process. This framework is applied to an empirical study that focuses on psychotherapist's perception of clinical supervision in relationship to professional self-efficacy in the therapeutic process.MethodsThe study was operationalized using the Manchester clinical supervision scale (MCSS), containing a demographic questionnaire, counselor self-efficacy scale–modified version. One hundred and twenty-five psychotherapists with supervisory experience participated in the research, including 67 trainees and 58 graduates of psychotherapy training.ResultsThe results show a positive relationship between effective supervision and self-efficacy (r = 0.363; sig = 0.000; n = 125). The participants who attributed higher ratings to supervision and supervision work alliance also assigned higher scores to perceived self-efficacy–although there is a significant relationship among the participants of psychotherapeutic training (r = 0.444; sig = 0.000; n = 67), this relation is not significant among the actual graduates. Based on modeling, rapport was discovered to be the most important predictor of supervision effectiveness assessment.ConclusionsThe results support the merits of supervision in the education of psychotherapists and the importance of investing resources in its regular implementation.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

In recent decades, the study of psychotherapy effectiveness has been one of the pillars of clinical research because of its implication for therapeutic cure. However, although many studies have focused their interest on the patient’s perception, there are no instruments oriented to the study of psychotherapists’ attributions of effectiveness: to what factors psychotherapists attribute responsibility for the cure of the therapies they provide. The present study aimed to develop and validate an instrument for assessing the attribution of the effectiveness of psychotherapy in a population of 69 psychotherapists of different theoretical orientations. After an initial process of inter-judge content validation, 12 items were selected for validation in the targeted population, adequately fulfilling the quality requirements in the validity–reliability tests, and grouped into four factors after principal component analysis. These factors were as follows: (1) therapeutic alliance enhancers; (2) psychotherapist emotional characteristics; (3) therapy-specific variables; and (4) facilitators of patient engagement with therapy. This four-factor structure also showed a good fit for the fit indices checked in confirmatory factor analysis. In summary, we can conclude that the Psychotherapeutic Effectiveness Attribution Questionnaire (PEAQ-12) developed in our research can be helpful if tested on a larger number of individuals. The results can be replicated in other populations of psychotherapists.

The present study implemented an experimental design to investigate the impact of psychotherapists' transient affective states (mood) on the formulation of client problem and on treatment recommendations. Moderating influence of personality traits and situational factors was also explored.
Thirty-two counseling interns participated in a between-subject experiment which compared the impact of 20 minutes of positive or negative mood inductions (achieved by exposure to a humorous or a conflictive film segment) upon their assessment of stimulus material consisting of a 20-minute segment of an initial counseling interview. Three measures were obtained prior to mood induction: (a) background information consisting of demographic data, theoretical orientation, and clinical experience, (b) the Life Events Report (LER) measuring level of satisfaction in various life areas and self-reported actual mood, and (c) the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) to define levels of Extraversion and Neuroticism. Immediately following mood induction a double mood check was obtained through rating of the film just watched, and the Profile of Mood States (POMS). Finally, the Client Assessment Form (CAF) was administered immediately after exposure to the stimulus material in order to obtain an assessment of the client and ensuing treatment recommendations.
Although a series of univariate analyses of variance failed to reveal between-group differences, multivariate statistical tests showed significant differences relative to client assessment. Results indicated that mood and current life events accounted for a substantial percentage of the variance for the assessment variables considered. Findings suggest that negative mood (distressed) clinicians assess global severity in less serious terms than positive mood (nondistressed) clinicians. Clinicians reporting current negative life events (stressed clinicians) assess client problems in less serious terms than clinicians reporting current positive life events (nonstressed clinicians). Additionally, a post-hoc exploratory series of two-way univariate analyses of variance showed unexpected biasing effects of mood on the assessment produced by psychodynamicists relative to their humanist counterparts. Findings of this study support the main hypotheses in that they show significant differences in assessment ability attributable to clinicians' mood and current life events. In addition, post-hoc data analyses suggest that clinicians with certain theoretical approaches may be more sensitive to the biasing effects of mood than others.

Over the past 30 years, there has been a revolution in psychotherapy under the influence of evidence-based methodology. The methods of evidence-based psychotherapy have gained preference all over the world. The rapidity of implementation of research results into practice is predetermined by the phenomenon of scientific influence. To determine this phenomenon, the author proposes to use the RSCI (Russian Science Citation Index) core percentile. The rating of the scientific influence of St. Petersburg psychotherapists was compiled for the first time ever. In total, the rating includes 31 specialists (with the 133 RSCI core percentile from 4 to 51) representing 12 organizations, ranked in accordance with the average RSCI core percentile as follows: 1) Scientific Medical Research Center for Psychiatry and Neurology named after V. M. Bekhterev — 16.1; 2) St. Petersburg School of Psychotherapy and Psychology of attitudes — 17.7; 3) St. Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University — 31.0; 4) North-Western State Medical University named after I. I. Mechnikov — 39.5. It is important to note that the rating includes non-governmental organizations, which, unlike state-run ones, do not have access to direct state funding for scientific research. Methods of psychotherapy are presented in the rating as follows: psychoanalysis — 8.7; positive dynamic psychotherapy — 17.7; cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy — 31.3, and personality-oriented (person-centered) psychotherapy — 31.6. The results obtained can be taken into account by the heads of commercial structures, health care and educational institutions when drawing up long-term plans, as well as by doctors and psychologists when choosing educational programs for professional retraining in the field of psychotherapy.

Image therapy is healing with positive images. The name of the technique itself comes from the Latin word „imago” - image that is the basis of the method. The very essence of the method is the treatment of the soul with positive visual, auditory or tactile sensations with theatrical elements. Currently, this method of behavioral intervention is used not only by psychotherapists, but also by psychologists. The imagotherapy method is also used in the work with children of different ages. In this article we discuss the imagotherapy method, as a method of intervention in the case of children with behavioral problems.

The last two decades have shown an increasing number of studies involving “virtual psychotherapists” and robot caregivers of humans with cognitive, social, behavioral deficits or some other type of disorder. A characteristic of these studies is the need to combine actors of the computer, psychology and psychiatry areas. To establish the needs and contributions of these actors we conducted searches in two different databases: PsycoInfo of the American Psychological Association (APA) and Web of Science of the Clarivate Analytics. If, on the one hand, this analysis reveals the fundamental contribution of psychology in the development of applications to meet the demand for virtual agents and social robots, on the other hand, the analysis also identified the contributions and factors that still need to be addressed to enable the widespread use of these agents as a support tool in psychology and psychiatry clinics.

Abstract: Multiple studies have found that psychiatric disorders, like mood disorders and substance use disorders, are highly comorbid among adults with either disorder. Integrated treatment refers to the treatment of two or more conditions and the use of multiple therapies such as the combination of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. Integrated therapy for comorbidity per numerous studies has consistently been superior to the treatment of individual disorders separately. The purpose of this QI project was to identify the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) instead of current treatment as usual for treating Substance Use Disorder (SUD) or mental health diagnosis independently. It is a retrospective chart review. The review examines CBT's efficacy for engaging individuals with co-occurring mood and substance u se disorders in treatment by enhancing adherence and preventing disengagement and relapse. Methods: Forty adults aged 26-55 with a DSM-IV diagnosis of a mood disorder of Major Depressive Disorder and/or anxiety and concurrent substance use disorder (at least weekly use in the past month). Participants received 12 sessions of individual integrated CBT treatment delivered with case management over a 12-week period. Results: The intervention was associated with significant improvements in mood disorder, substance use, and coping skills at 4, 8, and 12 weeks post-treatment. Conclusions: These results provide some evidence for the effectiveness of the integrated CBT intervention in individuals with co-occurring disorders. Of note, all psychotherapies are efficacious; however, it would be more advantageous to develop a standardized CBT that identifies variables that facilitate treatment outcomes specifically to comorbid disorders of substance use and mood disorders. It is concluded that there is potentially more to be gained from further studies using randomized controlled designs to determine its efficacy.
