The integration of literature and literary works has always played an undeniable role in language education. Despite the existence of a wealth of literature in non-native English-speaking countries, in the majority of the coursebooks, the entire attention is devoted to literary works of the native English-speaking countries. In this study, five coursebooks claiming to be based on English as an international language (EIL) were randomly selected and analysed to investigate to what extent they have incorporated the literatures of native and non-native English-speaking countries. The criteria for the content analysis of the claimed EIL-based coursebooks were based on Kachru’s Tri-Partide Model to categorise the countries, and culture with a small c and Culture with a capital C dichotomy. Results indicated that although the chosen coursebook purports to be based on EIL, less or nearly no attention is given to the literary works of the non-native speakers of English. The objective of this study is to compare and underscore the advantages and disadvantages of learning English in non-English speaking countries to propose the concept of a new English teaching method for students from non-English speaking countries (the case of Russia, Spain, Serbia, and Indonesia). The study used a mixed-methods approach with qualitative analysis of literature from Russia, Serbia, Spain, and Indonesia, and a research questionnaire was developed. 1595 participants were recruited for a survey determining their experiences of learning English and students’ perspectives on English teaching methods in non-English speaking countries. The data went through thematic analysis in the qualitative part of the research and descriptive analysis in the quantitative survey-based design. Findings of the qualitative analysis revealed both advantages and disadvantages of teaching English to students in selected countries; however, the main findings reported the presence of cultural barriers and students finding it difficult to form meanings from the English language context. Conceptual thinking helped to understand the role of memory and comprehension when learning a foreign language, whereby research focuses on more novel concepts. Future researchers can focus on the area of neural development of students' memory, which can help guide strategies to teach the English language effectively. English in speaking skills. Referring to English as the world's largest lingua franca or social language, English today has become the second most spoken language after Chinese. Furthermore, its status has been made as one of the languages that must be learned in almost all countries in the world. Therefore the need to always improve the quality of teaching is fundamental. But in practice, teaching and learning English in the classroom still leaves a lot of homework, especially those related to speaking teaching strategies. The low quality of graduate students in Indonesia in the field of speaking has proven that there is a pattern that needs to be addressed from the English language teaching system in our country. Therefore this study aims to provide an understanding of several types of language teaching strategies that can be implemented in the classroom. By using the method of library research or literature. This article provides an understanding and description of the types of learning strategies that can be used when teaching English.

Reviews of the literature on leadership training in undergraduate medical education have been conducted since 2014. Previous reviews have not identified networks, defined leadership, studied the selection criteria for instructors, nor analyzed leadership as interprofessional or transprofessional education. This scoping review fills these gaps. Inclusion criteria included use of competency-based education to teach leadership in universities, and quality assessment. Indexes and grey literature in Spanish, Portuguese, and English languages were included from six databases. Hand searching and consultation were employed for selected bodies of literature. This review identified leadership interventions in nine countries which had national and international networks primarily in English-speaking and European countries. No literature was found in Spanish-speaking or Portuguese-speaking countries, nor in Africa. Teaching leadership was linked mainly with undergraduate medical education and interprofessional education. This review identified 23 leadership and leader definitions and underscored the importance of including values in leadership definitions. Instructors were selected by discipline, role, experience, and expertise. This review may be used to inform the teaching of leadership in undergraduate medical curricula by suggesting potential networks, reflecting on diverse leadership definitions and interprofessional/transprofessional education, and assisting in selection of instructors.

Most countries in the world have adopted English Medium instruction in universities. The increasing global trend of the English language as the medium of instruction has made researchers focus on students' adjustment and performance in English medium instructional contexts. One key issue highlighted in English medium instruction is English speaking anxiety. The literature has pointed out that English language speaking anxiety among students has a dependency on their personal and interpersonal worries and the context of learning. Pakistan is also a country that has adopted English medium instruction at different levels of education. Therefore, the current study probed the dependencies of English language speaking anxiety on students' academic programs and how these anxieties impact students' academic performance in Pakistan. The survey study design consisted of convenience or accidental sampling. The structural equation modeling helped researchers infer the significance of academic programs' impact on academic performance, the effect of language anxiety dimensions on academic performance, and the impact of academic programs on academic performance via English-speaking anxieties. The academic departments significantly impact students' academic performance directly and indirectly through language-speaking anxieties.

Objective: To compare key characteristics of interventional radiology (IR) training in the UK with four other English-speaking countries (USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand) and summarise requirements for training. Methods: Main features examined were career pathway and requirements, examinations required, specific competition for IR and the process of applying for training as an international medical graduate. Data were collected from official governing body publications, literature and personal experience. Results: Several differences were highlighted, including length of training (ranging from 6 to 9 years after medical school), length of IR-specific training (ranging from 1 to 3 years) and examinations required (USA and Canada have additional IR-specific examinations). The level of competition is generally high, in all countries. Conclusions: With the demand for IR services set to increase over the next few years, it is crucial that more IR specialists are trained to meet this demand. Awareness of training structures in other countries can highlight opportunity and pitfalls, and help ensure the number of highly trained interventional radiologists in the UK continues to grow.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to produce a comprehensive and tabulated review of the many and scattered papers on public mental health literacy, with particular focus on people's ability to recognise mental illness and beliefs about the treatment. Design/methodology/approach – This was a review and tabula study. Comprehensive tables describe studies: the first looks at the beliefs of three different groups (the general public, students and young people) within developed English-speaking countries, and the second on studies from non-English-speaking countries. Findings – Some illnesses like depression and schizophrenia are well researched and others like anxiety or personality disorders largely ignored. The conclusion considers terminological (the loose use of different terms), theoretical (little or no theoretical models) and methodological (heavy reliance on printed, culture-bound vignettes) issues in the developing area of research. Originality/value – No such review exists and this therefore should be of considerable value to people working in the area.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to ascertain from literature, ways in which information technology is being utilized in the provision of user services in academic libraries in developed and developing countries; explore the implications of the under-utilization of information technology in offering user services to patrons in academic libraries in the English-speaking Caribbean; and offer suggestions regarding the acquisition of information technology to enhance user services in academic libraries in the English-speaking Caribbean. With the advent of new technology, user services in information-centered institutions must adapt and make changes in the way information is presented and accessed. Design/methodology/approach The authors have undertaken a review of literature from available scholarly papers to discover the expectations of modern library users, and how inventive academic libraries have to become to create a paradigm shift from the “antiquated” to “modern” user services to meet client expectations and to stay relevant in the information age. Findings The reviewed literature highlighted the various ways in which academic libraries, particularly those in developed countries, are employing information technology in their service offerings. The literature highlights the necessity for Academic Libraries in the English-speaking Caribbean to also utilize information technology for optimum user service if they are to attain international standard. Originality value This is one of the first attempts at examining and documenting the need for changes in user services in the English-speaking Caribbean. While the literature is replete with information on ways in which academic libraries are using information technology to serve their patrons, this paper offers a synopsis of the developments in this regard.

Abstract As an essential part of the “Globalization of Chinese Culture” strategy, the translation of Chinese fiction into English has gained more significance and deserves more academic attention. Through making a survey of Chinese fiction in English translation from 1978 to 2018, the article not only presents different trajectories of the development of Chinese fiction in English translation in mainland China and the English-speaking countries but also shows that different canons of Chinese fiction in English translation have been formed in the course of this development. Reasons for the formation of the prevailing canon(s) are explored and explained from perspectives taking into account concrete factors such as ideology, poetics and patronage as well as influences of the literary award mechanism. Based on this description and explanation, the article concludes with a few suggestions for the future development of cultural activity of introducing Chinese literature into English-speaking countries.

The ability to speak English in the era of Fourth Industrial Revolution is necessary for learners. However Gaining the ability of speaking English is still challenging for a lot of learners who live in English as Foreign Language countries. Most of learners find it difficult to speak English due to some barriers. The objective of this study is to explore English speaking’s barriers which face by foreign learners. The method used in this study is literature research method. To collect the data the writer used some references from articles, book, e book, and all the data related to this study. Based on the result and discussion, the writer concluded that the way of students gaining their speaking skill through learning, the exposure to English, the differences in grammar and phonology, anxiety, and motivation are some of barriers that foreign learners face in speaking English.

The global demand for teachers of English has led to an escalation in the number of non-native English speakers traveling overseas to teach English. Although teaching English abroad is typically associated with native English-speaking teachers hailing from inner-circle countries, it has also become commonplace to see non-native English-speaking expatriate teachers being hired. Yet, studies probing into expatriate non-native English-speaking teachers’ experiences have been sparse, particularly in the context of Turkey. This study endeavors to explore the challenges and coping strategies of expatriate non-native English-speaking teachers who worked in private schools and language programs in Turkey. To collect data, semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the analysis revealed that teachers faced several obstacles, including linguistic, cultural, and pedagogical challenges. Nevertheless, they managed to surmount these obstacles by acquiring proficiency in the local language, fostering intercultural awareness, and acquainting themselves with the education system. In light of the findings and the relevant literature, suggestions and implications are discussed for potential expatriate teachers intending to work in Turkey and other stakeholders.

PurposeThis literature systematically reviews articles published in “core” international journals on the topic of Indigenous education leadership over the period from 2000 to 2018 in four English-speaking countries, covering Canada, America, Australia and New Zealand, in which all of them have long colonial history and Indigenous population. These reviews provide insights into the nature of this emergent literature and generate many implications that required for further research in Indigenous education leadership.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, a vote counting method was employed and a clearly delimited body of research on Indigenous education leadership was also identified. The vote counting method can enlarge the perspectives on the noticeable heterogeneity of Indigenous education leadership within the four English-speaking countries. This is the basic constitutive element for the development of a comparative literature in Indigenous education leadership. Moreover, this method can clearly calculate the annual number of articles about Indigenous education leadership, and the various methods used in the publications of Indigenous education leadership can be figured out as well, which helps to find out the different patterns of changes on Indigenous education leadership.FindingsThis study identifies the patterns of Indigenous educational leadership research across four English-speaking countries, which will contribute to the development of research in this regard.Originality/valueThis is one of the first studies about Indigenous educational leadership in the world. It will not only contribute to education practice but also leadership theory development.

This article surveys the English-language literature on the history of financial reporting regulation in four non-English-speaking countries: France, Germany, Japan, and China. The choice of these countries was based on the availability of a sizable accounting history literature in the area surveyed. We first offer a summary of regulatory events in the four countries and suggest that the literature provides ample evidence of the countries’ intricate histories of financial reporting regulation. In addition, we point to important research gaps, where we believe that the literature has significant underexploited potential, in particular by moving beyond high-level overviews of changing regulatory mechanisms to in-depth studies of regulatory change that are embedded in the local legal, political, and societal contexts. Hence, plenty of opportunities exist for further research into these countries’ regulatory histories, either in terms of single-country studies or as comparative histories.

Morphological awareness is one of the determinant factors in language development, which can facilitate word reading and then facilitate later vocabulary knowledge. This study investigates morphological awareness and vocabulary size of Chinese ESL learners studying in universities in English-speaking countries and seeks to explore the relationship between these two factors. This study contributes to the existing literature on vocabulary development and enhances the understanding of English proficiency of ESL tertiary learners. Two morphological awareness tasks and a three-level Vocabulary Test are given to Chinese students studying in universities in English-speaking countries. The purpose of this study is to answer the following research questions: (1) To what extent international students in the higher education sector are aware of the morphemes?; (2) What is the average English vocabulary size of them ESL students studying in English-speaking countries?; (3)Is there any correlation between morphological awareness and vocabulary level? The result reveals that students have a good understanding of both the Morpheme Identification Test and the Morphological Structure Test. All the students have mastery of academic vocabulary, and some students reach a 5,000-word level vocabulary size. No significant correlation was found between students morphological awareness and their vocabulary level, which might be due to L1 influence, learner differences, and the lack of morphology teaching in the curriculum.

It also provides advice on how they can improve their language skills.

Given its being international, English language teaching methods are very critical in non-English speaking countries. This study examined the effect of the FC method compared to traditional method on the English course of 9th grade using pre-test, post-test and follow-up. The study was done using two classes as control (39 subjects) and two classes as the experimental group (38 subjects) selected using multi-stage random cluster sampling from both male and female genders in a three-month period. The four basic communication skills - reading, writing, speaking and hearing - were examined. The results indicated that FC method developed the communication skills of the 9th grade students of Ahwaz regarding two skills of speaking and reading. Based on the research result, it is recommended to use flipped classroom method to develop students’ English learning in speaking and reading skills.

This review aims at examining recent and relevant literature that investigates the correlations among learning style preferences, awareness of learning style preferences, motivation, intelligence types, gender, and Arabic Gulf region first-year college students’ EFL performance. A lot of studies about the influence of learners’ awareness of their learning style and motivation types on their ESL (English as a second language) learning performance have been conducted in English speaking Western countries, but fewer similar research studies have been conducted in EFL (English as a foreign language) contexts, particularly in the Arabian Gulf region Arabic-speaking countries and more particularly with first-year college-students as research participants. This review attempts to explore the dominant learning style preferences, main or obvious intelligence types according to the multiple intelligence theory, main motivation type and how the awareness of these could impact the learners’ progress or otherwise in EFL. Due to the relative scarcity of relevant research in the Arabic Gulf region, other studies conducted in neighboring and culturally similar countries were reviewed as well. As a result of examining the literature in this respect, more studies and research are recommended to help learners, instructors, professionals, researchers, and practitioners concerned and involved in EFL in this context.

Abstract Teaching English as a foreign language is rooted in the national interest of English-speaking countries that promote their own culture throughout the world. To some extent, ‘culture’ is a byword for what has come to be known as the modern nation. Mainly the UK and the US are in the spotlight of EFL teaching and learning. At the expense of other, less ‘sought-after’ varieties of English, British and American English make the case for British and American cultures. Essentially, this is all about Britishness and Americanness, as the very name of the English variety testifies to the British or the American standard. Of course, the other choice, i.e. not to make a choice, is a statement on its own. One way or another, the attempt to pick and choose shapes teaching and learning EFL. However, English is associated with teaching cultural diversity more than other prestige languages. Despite the fact that its status has everything to do with the colonial empire of Great Britain, English highlights the conflict between the use made of the mother tongue to stereotype the non-native speaker of English and current Anglo- American multiculturalism. Effectively, language-use is supposed to shed light on the self-identification patterns that run deep in the literary culture of the nation. Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) encompasses the above-mentioned and, if possible, everything else from the popular culture of the English-speaking world. It feels safe to say that the intractable issue of “language teaching as political action” (Cook, 2016: 228) has yet to be resolved in the classrooms of the Romanian public schools too.

As the significant language in academic, English play an important role in the internationalization of higher education. Many educational institutions having teach knowledge through English and countless publications and articles are tagged and written in English, the educational process is called English as a medium of instruction or EMI (Kirkpatrick, 2014). In Europe, one important motivator of EMI is Bologna process. Till now, there are hundreds of thousands of non-English-speaking students going to English-speaking countries to go for further education. And this number is still increasing every year. Accordingly, it is necessarily to explore the conception of English and what roles or meanings are tagged in “E” in EMI (Baker & Huttner, 2017). In this paper, diverse roles of English will be elaborated according to relevant literature from scholars and forms arguments of this paper based on above, in the meanwhile, some pedagogical implications of English used in subject instructions will also be concerned in the paper.

The study's objective was to explore the achieved challenges in the applied pedagogy practices of the English literature majors that are delivered in the English Medium of Instruction (EMI) in the context of the English foreign language (EFL) students at various Lebanese Universities. Understanding the challenges instructors are experiencing through the implementation of the English literature course work is the central focus of the study. The study aimed to highlight the practiced delivery of the academic literature course framework in the EMI and the setbacks this was having on the university instructors attempting to successfully achieve the specified disciplinary objectives within the designated time frame and in students acquiring the course content in its entirety as is experienced when applied in the English language. The study highlights students' language proficiency needed to achieve the internationalized course contents objectives. Supplementary findings from the study's questionnaire reveal that university admission can not assume students have the required skills needed to study the academic literature course work upon registration. The data further suggests that students need to have an A-level proficiency in the English language academic to ensure the taught literature course content is received in its totality, par with other internationalized literature programs. Moreover, the study encourages the need to explore current global universities in non-Anglo countries to examine how they may have successfully reformed their major literature courses delivered in EMI to EFL students.

This review aims to address the major sources of stress experienced by international students, the role of individual differences, the chronology of their stress levels and wellbeing over time, and gaps in the existing literature. Two electronic databases (PubMed and Psych Info) were searched for English peer-reviewed articles using eight search terms. Thirty-eight studies were included in this paper and divided into themes and sub-themes including sources of stress, individual differences and mental health including stress, depression and wellbeing. The findings highlight major stressors and show mixed results in some areas due to the lack of homogenous samples based on country of origin or ethnicity and sometimes context differences concerning the country or university social dynamics. Limitations were identified in the methodology, and several recommendations for future research are included.

Aims.Mental health policy internationally varies in its support for recovery. The aims of this study were to validate an existing conceptual framework and then characterise by country the distribution, scientific foundations and emphasis in published recovery conceptualisations.Methods.Update and modification of a previously published systematic review and narrative synthesis of recovery conceptualisations published in English.Results.A total of 7431 studies were identified and 429 full papers reviewed, from which 105 conceptualisations in 115 papers were included and quality assessed using established rating scales. Recovery conceptualisations were identified from 11 individual countries, with 95 (91%) published in English-speaking countries, primarily the USA (47%) and the UK (25%). The scientific foundation was primarily qualitative research (53%), non-systematic literature reviews (24%) and position papers (12%). The conceptual framework was validated with the 18 new papers. Across the different countries, there was a relatively similar distribution of codings for each of five key recovery processes.Conclusions.Recovery as currently conceptualised in English-language publications is primarily based on qualitative studies and position papers from English-speaking countries. The conceptual framework was valid, but the development of recovery conceptualisations using a broader range of research designs within other cultures and non-majority populations is a research priority.

Punch and Judy is a traditional form of puppet theatre widely known in the United Kingdom and certain other English-speaking countries. As part of the national culture for over 350 years it has featured in numerous works of art, particularly in literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Being generally less well-known beyond Britain, it may be problematic for readers encountering references to the show in English literature, such as the works of Dickens and Conrad. This paper provides an overview of the show, a short history and a description of certain aspects of historical and social change within the tradition.

A recent study suggests that poetry might offer unique insights into improving English language development. Despite these benefits, many language teachers avoid using poetry since teaching English through poetry in non-English-speaking countries is difficult. Poetry's ability to support language development has been overlooked due to teachers’ challenges. This shows a serious lack of understanding of teachers’ pedagogical skills in using literature to educate. Large-scale quantitative studies have examined teachers' experiences and challenges. Nevertheless, this study focuses on what they consider crucial pedagogical factors in employing poetry in English classes. This qualitative survey includes 15 English teachers. A teacher questionnaire was given to discuss their needs in constructing poetry-based English language learning practices, and interviews were performed to examine kindergarten and elementary school English language learning. The findings portrayed that poetry improves pupils' listening and speaking skills and vocabulary building. In addition, they thought that songs/lyrics and poetry should be used more in teaching and learning. A thematic analysis showed how teaching strategies, poem selection, and impact are varied.

In Indonesia, English is not widely used for communication. Hence, Indonesian high school graduates who desire to study abroad may encounter difficulties communicating in English. One of the destination countries Indonesian students choose to study in is Malaysia. When studying in Malaysia, some may transition from EFL (English as a Foreign Language) to ESL (English as a Second Language) speakers as they are required to speak English more frequently, especially in academic contexts. Thus, this study was conducted to investigate the challenges of speaking English for Indonesian undergraduate students, the contributing factors to the challenges, and the strategies used by the students to navigate the challenges. A number of 15 Indonesian EFL undergraduate students still registered as active students in an ESL university in Malaysia participated in this study. Data was collected via semi-structured interviews, transcribed, and thematically analysed. The findings were presented thematically with narrative excerpts to support them. The results indicated some challenges faced when students adjusted themselves in their higher education institution, including their psychological reactions, speaking academic English, and online learning. Therefore, to help EFL students be more prepared to speak English for academic contexts in an ESL environment, stakeholders in the education sector in Indonesia should consider providing more actions to focus on improving the English-speaking skills of students.

This paper asks why so few works of Hungarian children’s literature have made it to publication in English-speaking countries. It finds that few translated children’s books make it onto the English-language market and those translations that are successful mainly appear in major European languages. Representation at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair has been dogged by a lack of financial resources and polish while Hungarian State funding has lacked continuity. Nearly all the English translations of Hungarian children’s books available today have been published in Hungary, although a book will occasionally find its way to foreign publishers by informal means. This paper also follows the development of Hungarian children’s literature from the late nineteenth century to the present day, noting changes in terms of character, subject matter and attitudes to diversity and use of the fairy-tale tradition. It outlines one recent controversy surrounding the publication of Meseország mindenkié [’Storyland for Everybody’], a book which aims, in contrast to the current regime’s ideology, to represent the marginalized in Hungarian society. It also details recent clashes sparked by the new Hungarian National School Curriculum and one writer’s feminist critique of a classic text.

This study aims to provide a comprehensive and detailed view of how Content and Language Intergraded Learning (CLIL) impact university students’ English learning outcomes in non-English as native-speaking countries. The study attempts to use a systematic literature review method to look through various peer review journal articles about the implementation of CLIL and its influence on learners’ English acquisition in higher education from three perspectives: general English proficiency, productive and receptive language skills outcomes, and students’ attitude. Findings show that English ability has developed after CLIL—based lessons while the difference between the CLIL group and non-CLIL group is not significant, and different linguistic skills unevenly developed. Meanwhile, students gain motivation and interest to learn English in CLIL, while some claim they feel challenged in learning English by the new teaching approach. Based on these findings, the study offers recommendations and teaching strategies implications for introducing CLIL in universities, especially in China’s tertiary educational settings.

Abstract This article discusses the validity of the bonus for languages other than English (known as the Language Bonus) established in Australia to boost participation in language education. In subjecting this incentive plan to empirical investigation, we not only address a gap in the literature, but also continue the discussion on how to ensure that the efforts made by governments, schools, education agencies and teachers to support language study in schooling can have long-term success. Using data from a large-scale investigation, we consider the significance of the Language Bonus in influencing students’ decisions to study a language at school and at university. While this paper has a local focus – an English-speaking country in which language study is not compulsory – it engages with questions from the broader agenda of providing incentives for learning languages. It will be relevant especially for language policy in English speaking countries.

English as a lingua franca has many pedagogical implications for the field of foreign language teaching and teaching English as a foreign language, especially the deemphasize on the native-speaking cultural model. As a better alternative to the NS model, the present paper aims to discuss three key issues, the integration of non-native cultures into the EFL classroom to enrich EFL students’ cultural knowledge and to consider non-native speaking countries as a model, highlight the importance of the non-essentialist understanding of culture as a concept in such an integration, and, to consider a “glocal” cultural model as a second better alternative. Resources were gathered from previous literature and Byram’s model was considered while analyzing the resources gathered. The study makes propositions based on the findings of this study. This study presents quantitative research on the opinions of Jordanian EFL learners regarding multiculturalism and multilingualism. It evaluates how learning English is linked with the cultural association of these learners. The communicative competence model, which explains multilingualism and multiculturalism as being associated with the different competencies of students in acquiring a language, is applied. It applies a survey methodology to investigate the perceptions of Jordanian EFL students regarding their multilingualism and multiculturalism. A sample of 426 undergraduate students was used in the analysis. The main findings showed that the students prefer collaborative learning strategies. It also showed that the students are more interested in standard English and have a relatively low cultural affiliation with native English-speaking countries such as the United States and Britain. Jordanian students seem to have relatively low levels of multiculturalism, although they consider themselves citizens of the world in seeking to learn English as the language of globalization. Multilingualism for Jordanian EFL students seems to focus mostly on standard English.

Abstract Most research works on language attitudes, which have been done within the Hispanic world, deal with issues where Spanish is usually confronted with other languages (American Indian languages, Catalan, Valencian, Galician, Equatorial Guinean languages, English, etc.), or about attitudes in some Spanish-speaking countries with respect to other varieties of Spanish, both in the Americas and Spain. However, a global, comprehensive study, which would include all Spanish speaking countries, and which would assess their attitudes, beliefs and prejudices equally, was missing, so that it would have been possible to count for a thorough and at the same time comparative study about how Spanish speakers evaluate not only their own speech, but the speech of others around them. The present study describes in broad strokes the most recent research and their new contributions in the Spanish-speaking world.

This study explores the language planning efforts for English language maintenance employed by sojourning Saudi families after returning to their home country. The study concludes that the importance of English in the development of different sectors in Saudi Arabia and the advantages of bilingualism in economic, health, and cognitive aspects for children played a significant role in the families’ language planning decisions. The study showed that the mothers maintained and developed their children’s English through following planned language strategies. A focus group discussion and semi-structured interviews illustrated that the mothers used four main strategies, which are speaking English exclusively at home, watching English television shows, maintaining relationships with English native speakers, and playing online educational games in English. The findings of this research study contribute to achieving understanding of sojourner families’ L2 maintenance efforts after returning to their home countries when those are monolingual countries such as Saudi Arabia.The study close with recommendations for future research to further develop this field of research.

Although the importance and urgency of the corporate governance debate has increased in media, public and scientific literature after the financial crisis, there is no systematic and holistic approach to the phenomenon of corporate governance and the associated economic research in the Germanspeaking countries. Due to this, the literature on corporate governance research in the Germanspeaking area is examined by means of bibliometric methods and social network analysis in order to identify thematic clusters and the most influential documents and authors. Based on a co-citation analysis of over 10,000 references cited in 267 source documents, a map is constructed that depicts the landscape of corporate governance research in German-speaking countries. The analysis identifies a large body of accumulated corporate governance research, which is mostly based on the theoretical work from English-speaking scholars. Our findings and interpretations allow a new view on the German corporate governance research and on the particular understanding of corporate governance in the German-speaking research community. Motivations for primary school students to participate in English classes are important for educators in areas that consider English as a foreign language (EFL). Although there is a lot of research discussing how to motivate non-native English-speaking children to participate in sessions, there is little study making an effort to find out what motivates primary school students in EFL regions to engage in their English classes despite their relevance. However, there is still a lack of specific studies, so this is a systematic review of previous studies about motivations for those students to participate during online and in-person sessions because of the limitations of previous literature. By reviewing previous research, this paper finds that both external and internal motivations have an influence on the engagement of EFL primary school students during in-person English sessions. For intrinsic motivations, reward plays an important role in motivating EFL primary school students to learn English. However, students can be influenced by different kinds of motivations at the same time.

There is no question nowadays as to the international and powerful status of English at a global scale and, consequently, as to its presence in non-English speaking countries at different levels. Linguistically speaking, English is one of the languages which have mostly influenced Spanish throughout its history and especially from the late 1960s. In this study, the impact of English on Spanish is considered in the language of sports; particularly, sports Anglicisms and false Anglicisms are analysed. Due attention is paid to the different forms that an Anglicism may adopt and to which of those forms are more widely accepted or rejected by prescriptivists and speakers at large, in the light of a contrastive analysis of their appearance in the <em>Nuevo diccionario de anglicismos, </em>the <em>Diccionario de la Real Academia Española </em>and the<em> Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual</em>.

Speaking the most-demanded languages is an asset in the labor market. However, coming from a high-income country may give immigrants an advantage in the labor market as those may have more transferable skills. This article investigates the determinants of the employability and labor income of immigrants and newcomer immigrants in the United States (US) labor market, specifically focusing on the role of language and income level of the home country. It applies the Heckman two-step selection procedure to the American Community Survey between 2000 and 2019. The findings show that immigrating from both high-income countries and countries where internationally most widely used languages (English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Chinese) are spoken gives immigrants an advantage in the US labor market compared to those from the countries where only national languages are spoken. This article emphasizes the key role of the income level of the home country on immigrants' labor income in the US. It contributes to the literature by employing the interaction terms of being from the same-income-level countries and the same-languages-speaking countries.

Relevance. The basis of this research is a comparative study of mystical literature written by Kazakh and English-speaking writers.Purpose. In this article, the artistic works of famous authors are considered from the point of view of analyzing the features of the image of mystical motifs in them.Methodology. In this research paper, comparative analysis of mystical motifs in Kazakh literature and artistic works published in English-speaking countries were conducted. It is obvious that a new trend that began in the second half of the XVIII century in England led to the widespread use of mystical elements by writers in literature, and it also began to spread to other states, as well.Results. The functions of mystical motifs in various fictions are revealed, and the ways of their creation are determined in this work. Currently, there is a growing demand for mystical fictions, and interest in writing fictions with mystical elements. Therefore, there are many scholars who investigated the issues related to the mysticism in English Literature. Although Kazakh writers and poets started to use mystical elements in the structure of their fictions in 20th century only, this trend could find its readers.Conclusions. In their works, almost all the authors also lead and seduce their readers to the high ideals that they strive for. The Archival Science journal in the years 2011–2020 – an analysis of research papers Archival Science is currently the most important archive journal, published in English since 2001. The aim of this article is to analyse articles published in that journal in the years 2011–2020. Four types of issues were analysed: the authors’ affiliations, geographical characteristics of articles, research methods and the subject of the published texts. As a result, it was noted that authors of articles come mostly from English-speaking countries (which confirms the trend from the years 2001–2010, studied by Eric Ketelaar in 2010) and when the subject of an article focuses on a specific geographical area, it concerns English-speaking countries as well. It was observed that many research articles do not present specific research methods and those that do mention not only traditional methods, such as archival research and a literature review, but also methods characteristic of social sciences (e.g. an interview, observation, survey). Ten most popular subjects described in the analysed texts include: digital issues, the underprivileged, state archives and documentation, the history of archives, human rights, decolonisation, ethics, preparing archival materials, social archives, the profession of an archivist and documentation manager.

The Australian and Canadian 24-hour movement guidelines for children and youth synthesized studies in English and French or other languages (if able to be translated with Google translate) and found very few studies published in English from Arabic countries that examined the relationship between objectively measured sedentary behaviour (SB), sleep and physical activity (PA) and health indicators in children aged 5–12 years. The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the relationships between 24-hour movement behaviours and health indicators in school-aged children from Arab-speaking countries. Online databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, SPORTdiscus, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Scopus were searched for English, French and Arabic studies (written in English), while Saudi Digital Library, ArabBase, HumanIndex, KSUP, Pan-Arab Academic Journal, e-Marefa, Al Manhal eLibrary and Google Scholar were searched for Arabic studies. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation framework was used to assess the risk of bias and the quality of evidence for each health indicator. A total of 16 studies, comprising 15,346 participants from nine countries were included. These studies were conducted between 2000 and 2019. In general, low levels of PA and sleep and high SB were unfavourably associated with adiposity outcomes, behavioural problems, depression and low self-esteem. Favourable associations were reported between sleep duration and adiposity outcomes. SB was favourably associated with adiposity outcomes, withdrawn behaviour, attention and externalizing problems. PA was favourably associated with improved self-esteem and adiposity outcomes. Further studies to address the inequality in the literature in the Arab-speaking countries to understand the role of 24-hour movement behaviours and its positive influence on health outcomes across childhood are urgently needed.

The article deals with the issue of teaching foreign literature. The role of literature in a classroom has been re-assessed recently and many now view literary texts as providing rich linguistic input, effective stimuli for students to express themselves in other languages and a potential source of learner motivation. The literature used in classrooms today is no longer restricted to canonical texts from certain countries e.g. UK, USA, but includes the work of writers from a diverse range of countries and cultures using different forms of English. Literary texts can be studied in their original forms or in simplified or abridged versions. An increasing number of stories in English are written specifically for learners of other languages. Literary texts provide opportunities for multi-sensorial classroom experiences and can appeal to learners with different learning styles. Literary texts offer a rich source of linguistic input and can help learners to practise the four skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing – in addition to exemplifying grammatical structures and presenting new vocabulary. Teachers should be ready to provide a background for the reading to take place. In an ideal situation, the preparation would help motivate the student to want to read, and a bit of creative imagination would also be required here.

English is commonly used as an official language, a second language for business and commerce, as well as a medium of instruction in Outer Circle countries, including the Philippines. There have been studies about the impact of the English language on the economy of certain Outer Circle countries; however, no existing research has presented a comprehensive picture of its impact on the Philippines, which is renowned for excellence in industries that have developed based on Filipinos’ high English proficiency, such as English-speaking call centers and both online and offline schools that teach English as a second language (ESL). Therefore, this article comprehensively describes the relationship between the English language and the economy of the Philippines and explores its associated problems. First, the article briefly explains the history of English education in the Philippines to demonstrate why a large proportion of its population is proficient in English. Second, it focuses on Filipinos’ English proficiency by examining their average scores on international standardized English tests and the Business English Index. Furthermore, it reviews the literature that investigates their evaluation of their own English as well as their awareness of the importance of English in their workplaces. Third, it examines English-based industries: call center and ESL industries. Finally, it discusses the problems of using English as a medium of instruction and the exploitation of the Philippines’ inexpensive labor force in these English-based industries by developed countries.

The article addresses the problem of the functional potential of the present-day English-language media discourse and its role in English-speaking societies and other countries where English does not have official national status. The purpose of the research is to holistically understand key functions that the English language media discourse is performing in the 21st century. The theoretical framework of this study includes mutually influencing and complementary research doctrines of Halliday’s systemic functional approach, Stuart Hall’s cultural studies approach, and the pragmatic approach of Jeff Verschuren. The findings are based on qualitative and quantitative analyses of scientific works dedicated to the English-language media discourse and a massive media discourse corpus of leading English-language print and online media resources. Overall, the research has proved that the English-language media discourse may perform seven key pragmatic functions (political and economic function, educational function, environmental protection and sustainable development function, integration function, innovative function, cultural diplomacy function, and the social function of sport), which help promote a ‘missionary’ world of democracy and sustainability, affordable education and breakthrough innovations, multiculturalism, national identity and race-free ideology, healthy sport and well-being. Moreover, it is proved that modern English-language media discourse acts as a single holistic information management system whose goal is to become a global influencer and mediator navigating between English-speaking nations and non-English world communities.

To create a human community with a shared future, cultural exchanges between countries should be enhanced. Efforts should be made to sort out traditional Chinese cultural resources and bring ancient books back to life to &ldquo;tell better and more accurate stories and make China&rsquo;s voice heard&rdquo; (Xi, 2020, p. 365). Classical Chinese poetry has been an important window to help overseas readers to understand China. Li Bai&rsquo;s poems, as representative of classical Chinese poetry, have been widely translated in the English-speaking world, but the translation and communication (TC) effects remain unclear. This study attempts to investigate the &ldquo;hard&rdquo; TC effects of English translations of Li Bai&rsquo;s poems in America by firstly retrieving the sales rankings of 16 English translations containing the most Li Bai&rsquo;s poems from 18 representative translators of Li Bai&rsquo;s poems in the world-famous online bookstore Amazon and secondly analyzing customer reviews from Amazon and reader reviews from the world&rsquo;s largest reading website Goodreads. Mix methods, both quantitative bibliographic survey and qualitative text analysis, were used in the research. Research shows that although sales rankings are relatively low, Li Bai&rsquo;s poems have a certain number of fixed readers in America. Four English translations of Li Bai&rsquo;s poems made by Ezra Pound, David Hinton, Arthur Cooper and Ha Jin have been well received by target readers with good TC effects. Among the six influencing elements of the TC effect of Li Bai&rsquo;s poems&mdash;TC motivation, TC subject, TC control, TC content, TC channel and TC audience, readers pay much more attention to TC control and TC content. Therefore, to achieve a better TC effect on Chinese literature, the Chinese government and concerned institutions should scientifically formulate policies on the above-mentioned six TC elements, especially on text selection and translation strategy. This research will contribute to the communication effect of translated Chinese literature and serve as a reference for the TC undertakings of literature from other non-English speaking countries, thus promoting equal cultural communication among countries.
