Russian and world psychiatry are characterized by significant differences: the first can be called as the psychiatry of domestic traditions, and the second one as the psychiatry of scientific facts. Russian psychiatry is marked by emphatic devotion to national theoretical schools, an appeal in scientific discussions to the authority of famous psychiatrists of the past, a tendency to speculative psychopathological constructions, the use of archaic psychiatric terms with unclear content, insufficient attention to the principles of evidence-based medicine, or even outright disregard for these principles. The natural consequences of Russian psychiatrys traditionalism are the arbitrariness of psychiatric diagnosis and the frequent use of medicines and treatment methods without proper evidence of their effectiveness and safety.

In the mid-1950s, a unique section of transcultural psychiatric studies was established within the McGill Department of Psychiatry. These personal recollections describe the backgrounds, methods, and motivations of those most involved and suggest why such a specialized study should have emerged in Canada and at McGill. Some of the major controversies and developments in the field are explored, focusing on the question of culture-bound syndromes and their occasional biological underpinnings. The relevance of transcultural psychiatry to psychiatric practice is discussed. La psychiatrie transculturelle: experiences vécues et perspectives canadiennes

SummaryThe study of the biological determinants of abnormal behavior is not anymore psychiatry's stepchild, but a respected branch of that discipline. There is every reason to be optimistic over the future of biological psychiatry. The brain sciences are developing with astounding speed and the systematic attention for psychiatric-diagnosis and differential diagnosis renders biological psychiatry an unprecedented vitality. One should, however, not ignore some disquieting prospects. The following points of concern are discussed: the alarming shortage of young research psychiatrists; the deficiencies in the teaching of biological psychiatry; the hesitancy to utilize the fruits of brain and behavior research in clinical practice; the shortcomings in psychiatric diagnosing; nosological tunnel vision and, finally, the danger of overrating biological psychiatry with the inevitable disappointment reaction that will follow. The scientific maturation of psychiatry is contingent on a balanced development of its constituents.

The exercise of hospital accreditation by the Royal College of Psychiatrists has resulted in a significant improvement in the standards of psychiatric training in this country.1 The North West, more than any other region, adopted the policy of District General Hospital psychiatry2 in the sixties which had the effect of creating small psychiatric units, unable to muster enough resources, to provide comprehensive training programmes by themselves. These developments have highlighted the problems of organising viable rotational schemes for training in psychiatry.3,4,5

ABSTRACTThis paper discusses the various ways in which British Afro Caribbeans are disadvantaged in their encounter with psychiatry. It suggests that far from being monolithic and institutional, racism must be deconstructed and traced to the actions, practices and procedure involved in specific encounters. The procedures of psychiatry are examined through the discourses of psychiatry and psychiatric epidemiology. From this analysis it is suggested that psychiatry's relationship to Afro Caribbean populations in Britain arises from the ways in which psychiatry conceptualises notions of ethnicity, race and cultural difference, as well as ways in which it organises and reproduces itself as a form of therapeutic intervention.

Objectives:(i) To describe the need for child psychiatric services in Vietnam; (ii) to review child psychiatry's present role within the Vietnamese health care system; (iii) to identify cultural, economic and manpower obstacles to the development of child mental health services; and (iv) to recommend a course for the future development of child psychiatry in Vietnam. Method:The existing literature relevant to the Vietnamese health and mental health care systems, traditional practices and beliefs regarding health and mental health, and the current status of psychiatry and child psychiatry in Vietnam was reviewed. In addition, discussions regarding these topics, and the future of child psychiatry in Vietnam, were held with leading Vietnamese health and mental health professionals. Results:The current role of child psychiatry in Vietnam is limited by the health care system's focus on infectious diseases and malnutrition, and by cultural, economic and manpower factors. Treatment is reserved for the most severely afflicted, especially patients with epilepsy and mental retardation. Specialised care is available in only a few urban centres. In rural areas treatment is provided by allied health personnel, paraprofessionals and community organisations. Conclusions:While the present role of child psychiatry in Vietnam is limited, it can still make important contributions. These include:research defining the need for child and adolescent mental health services, identifying priority child psychiatric disorders and assessing the effectiveness of priority disease treatment; and training to enhance the skills of primary health care providers in the treatment of priority disorders.

To illustrate the contribution anthropology can make to cross-cultural and international research in psychiatry, four questions have been put to the cross-cultural research literature and discussed from an anthropological point of view: ‘To what extent do psychiatric disorders differ in different societies?’ ‘Does the tacit model of pathogenicity/pathoplasticity exaggerate the biological aspects of cross-cultural findings and blur their cultural dimensions?’ ‘What is the place of translation in cross-cultural studies?’ and ‘Does the standard format for conducting cross-cultural studies in psychiatry create a category fallacy?’ Anthropology contributes to each of these concerns an insistence that the problem of cross-cultural validity be given the same attention as the question of reliability, that the concept of culture be operationalised as a research variable, and that cultural analysis be applied to psychiatry's own taxonomies and methods rather than just to indigenous illness beliefs of native populations.

There is an increasing awareness of the importance of spirituality in mental health as reflected in the addition of the category "religious or spiritual problem" in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) and the inclusion of knowledge of spirituality amongst the training objectives for psychiatry residents outlined by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. However, a survey of Canadian psychiatry residency programs indicated that minimal training was offered in this area (Grabovac & Ganesan, 2003). The present study explored psychiatry residents' attitudes regarding spirituality in psychiatry, and their interest in further learning on the topic. A total of 45 of 70 residents at one program completed the questionnaire. Most residents believed spirituality could have both positive (95%) and negative (80%) relationships to mental health. Although 91% felt it was appropriate to inquire about spirituality, only 72.7% endorsed actually addressing patients' spiritual problems. This discrepancy may be related to residents' varying opinions and comfort levels surrounding controversial issues. Although 84.4% reported feeling comfortable asking patients about spirituality, many had concerns about offending patients (48%) and about the ethical implications of such inquiry (55.6%). A majority of residents (61.8%) had not received any training in spirituality and medicine during medical school, and 80% said they would like to learn more on the subject. These results suggest that educational initiatives surrounding spirituality in psychiatry should be implemented.

Children and adolescent psychiatric inpatients (n = 25) versus staff (n = 35) milieu perceptions were measured with the Ward Atmosphere Scale (WAS) Form K (Kids). The perceptions were compared with previous data collected in 1981, 1982, and 1984 on the same unit. The 1993 staff and patients continued to perceive the unit as a therapeutic environment despite recent restrictions on length of stay due to health care reform. The views of the staff and patients were found to be divergent but less so than in previous years. Additionally, the more seriously ill a patient was determined to be, the more negatively he or she perceived the environment. Differences in perceptions between day shift versus night shift and administrative versus non-administrative staff were also found and discussed. Staff perceptions versus their ideal conceptions were also investigated and compared with those of the 1984 staff. The 1994 staff was found to more closely approximate their ideals than the 1984 staff.

Thesis (M Med (Psychiatry))--University of Limpopo (Medunsa Campus), 2010.
The aim of the study was to establish a profile of psychiatric illnesses that are encountered during consultation-liaison (C-L) psychiatry and to describe interventions undertaken. The objective was to identify referral patterns, establish the referral rate, and to profile the diagnoses & describe the actions taken by the consulting doctor. This was a retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study conducted on all inpatients that were referred to psychiatry from other disciplines in the hospital for the 12 month period January to December 2009. The study was conducted at Dr George Mukhari Hospital, which is a tertiary psychiatric unit which caters for mental health care users in the Garankuwa , Soshanguve and Mabopane region. The study found that the referral rate to psychiatric C-L services was lower than at other institutions. Amongst the referred patients, there was a high incidence of organic brain syndrome diagnoses, but a low rate of depression. The study proposed further investigation into the reasons behind the low rate of referral and low rate of depression, so as to improve C-L service delivery in the hospital.

This thesis examines the theme of women’s madness in the 1960s and 1970s through the works of four English and French writers and film-makers: Chantal Akerman, Emma Santos, Jane Arden and Mary Barnes. It examines how these four writers and film-makers inscribe madness into their texts from a sociological angle, presenting the texts and films discussed as socio-historical artefacts while analysing each writer and film-maker’s representation of women’s madness. Inspired by psychologist Phyllis Chesler, who argues that madness is tied to socially defined gender roles and used to demarcate violations of expected gendered behaviour, this research analyses various manifestations of ‘madness’ from the everyday madness of Chantal Akerman, to psychiatrically incarcerated madness in the texts of Emma Santos, to madness influenced by anti-psychiatry through the works of Jane Arden, to complete immersion in anti-psychiatry with Mary Barnes. The interdisciplinary and cross-cultural nature of this thesis combines fields from both English and French studies, from the study of female writers and film-makers, psychoanalytic theory, the history of psychiatry and how they intersect with gender combined with contemporary feminist writings of philosophy, psychology, and theology.

Для меня лично поводы начались значительно раньше, ведь я поступил в медицинский вуз, чтобы стать психоневрологом. ICD-10 (The ICD-10 Classification of Mental and Behavioral Disorders. Clinical description and diagnostic guidelines) Introduction. Cotard syndrome is a neuropsychiatric pathology that is uncommon in medical practice but has a significant impact on public awareness of the importance of mental health. This mental disorder is also known as negation delirium, living dead syndrome, nihilistic delirium, or walking corpse syndrome. Objectives. A clinical case of a patient diagnosed with dementia due to late-onset Alzheimer's disease is presented; dementia also includes symptoms of Cotard's syndrome. Over time, the transmission of knowledge and data about Cotard Syndrome, despite its very low frequency, has become a pathology that intrigues and inspires curiosity among individuals. Consciousness of the existence of this delirious illness and the accurate definition of the symptoms of a dual diagnosis are required in a number of psychiatric pathologies. Method. This document was created using the "Elisabeta Doamna" psychiatry hospital Database from Galati, Romania, where patient data was acquired and admitted to the Psychiatry Clinic Section II. In addition, a variety of bibliographical references and diagnostic criteria were utilized, including the ICD-10 (the Classification of Mental and Behavioral Disorders, Clinical Description, and Diagnostic Guidelines), the DSM-5 (the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), and the psychometric tests: the MMSE (the Mini Mental Status Test) and the GAFS (the Global Functioning Assessment Scale). Results and Conclusions Despite having no psychiatric history, the patient arrived at the psychiatric hospital after experiencing psychiatric symptoms caused by both Alzheimer's disease and Cotard's syndrome, symptoms that were ignored and gradually deteriorated, resulting in full-blown delirium, rapid dementia degradation, and a not-very-favorable outlook.

Introduction: Psychiatric disorders occurring during endocrine dysfunction and, conversely, endocrine dysfunctions associated with mental disorders were the emergence of a new discipline, psychoendocrinology. Psychiatric disorders correlated with endocrine diseases are defined as psychopathological manifestations of variable intensity and clinical symptomatology, determined by complex psycho-neuro-endocrinological interrelationships. Defining elements consist of the association between diagnosis of mental disorders and specific symptoms for endocrine dysfunction. Methods: We conducted a prospective one-year study (January 2018 - December 2018 on 112 patients hospitalized in the Clinic of Psychiatry who also had an endocrinological comorbidity. We investigated the frequency and severity of psychoendocrinological associations by studying a number of demographic and clinical items. Results: The results showed that the highest incidence belongs to thyroid disorder - 55.36%, followed by gonadal disorders - 24.11%, and, rarely, pituitary diseases and diabetes. Hyperthyroidism was associated most frequently with manic episodes, while unipolar depression prevailed in patients with hypothyroidism. In gonadal disorders, present in majority in female patients (secondary amenorrhea, menopause or erectile dysfunction in males), depression accompanied by anxiety, often severe in intensity, was the most frequent psychiatric diagnosis. Psychotic disorders were met in a smaller number of cases, especially in patients with long history of endocrine disorders and instability of biological constants. Conclusions: We may state that affective disorders are the most frequent nosologically category in patients with endocrine dysfunctions. It requires a better collaboration between specialists in endocrinology and psychiatry, to highlight the determinants which contribute to the development of psychopathological manifestations in endocrine diseases and to individualize the treatment depending on cases’ particularities.

Introduction: Eating disorders are mental illnesses characterised by abnormal eating habits that have a negative impact on a person's physical or mental health. In the last decade hospitalizations which included eating disorders increased among all age groups. The assessment of eating disorders associated with affective disorders has important clinical implications, but the standard psychiatric classification DSM-5 (American Psychiatry Association, 2013) and ICD-10 (World Health Organization, 1993) are limited. Objectives: The current study aims to broaden the evaluation of this association and better understand its clinical implications. In addition, the study's goal is to comprehend the implications of eating disorders in Galaţi County. Method: We conducted a retrospective study on 147 patients with eating disorders and mood [affective] disorders who were admitted to the Psychiatry Hospital "Elisabeta Doamna" Galati between January 1 and February 1, 2019.We used ICD-10 (Classification of Mental and Behavioral Disorders) and DSM-5 criteria for diagnosis (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). Results: In the period from 1 January 2019 - 1 February 2019 a total of 1131 patients was admitted in the Psychiatry Hospital, Of these, 147 were diagnosed with mood (affective) disorders, of whom 17 patients (12%) associated disorder and food as well as the independent disorder. Among these patients, the percentage of women with eating disorders associated with the affective disorder was 82 % and the percentage of men was 18 %. Conclusions: According to the findings, women are more likely to associate eating disorders with mood [affective] disorders. We also found a poor relationship between eating disorders and affective disorders, with eating disorders being associated with a high percentage of other psychiatric disorders, which is represented by alcohol and substance use, but also by high-impact diseases like Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia.

This Evidence Check aimed to summarise the evidence on effective models of psychiatry service delivery for older people in four types of hospital and residential / long-stay care services. The review found that hospital mental health wards for older people were effective in improving neuropsychiatric symptoms, mood, anxiety and quality of life. Specialist consultations and liaison services enhanced the quality of hospital care and the adoption of best practice approaches by clinicians. They also reduced hospital stay and carer stress, and increased patient satisfaction with care. The authors compared outcomes for older people being treated in dedicated mental health services with mainstream (or ‘ageless’) mental health services and identified a gap in evidence. The review found the need for more research on psychiatric services in residential and long-stay care settings, and effective care models in particular populations, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
