This chapter focuses on the history of RadioVision, conceived by C. Francis Jenkins as an instrument of industry and government communication through the wireless transmission of photographs and text messages. While others have been developing radiotransmitted speech, addressed to the ear, Jenkins centered his efforts on the development of radio-transmitted pictures, an address to the eye. RadioVision evolved into a system for transmitting still pictures, maps, messages, and eventually into an early form of televised motion entertainment. By the 1920s, wireless had become “one of the most interesting subjects before the scientific community,” and Jenkins RadioVision would be in the forefront. This chapter discusses Jenkins' pioneering ideas and patents in the field of telecommunication, including designs for prismatic rings and the use of radio for “mailing” messages.

Does the dispersal of planktonic larvae promote strong connections between marine populations? Here we describe some of the most commonly used population- and individual-based genetic methods that have enhanced our understanding of larval dispersal and marine connectivity. Both approaches have strengths and weaknesses. Choosing between them depends on whether researchers want to know about average effective rates of connectivity over long timescales (over hundreds to thousands of generations) or recent patterns of connectivity on shorter timescales (one to two generations). The use of both approaches has improved our understanding of larval dispersal distances, the relationship between realized dispersal (from genetics) and dispersal potential (from planktonic larval duration), and the crucial distinction between genetic and demographic connectivity. Although rarely used together, combining population- and individual-based inferences from genetic data will likely further enrich our understanding of the scope and scale of larval dispersal in marine systems.

The tools of genetic epidemiology—family, adoption, and twin studies—show convincingly that substance use behavior and substance use disorders are influenced by both genetic and familial and extrafamilial environmental factors. Environmental factors appear to play a more influential role in the early stages of substance use, whereas genetic factors become more important in the development of problem use and substance use disorder. Moreover, some genetic effects are likely conditional on conducive environments; research employing both behavior genetic approaches and measured genes point to important gene–environment interactions that promote substance use and dependence. Consequently, a full understanding of the addiction process requires investigating substance use behavior within its comorbid context. The identification of specific genetic mechanisms underlying these heritable influences is elusive. These findings have prompted the development of new strategies for testing the joint effect of multiple genetic variants in gene-based or gene pathway analyses.

Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that osteoarthritis (OA) is a complex trait with numerous environmental and genetic risk factors. A great deal of effort has been spent elucidating these risk factors and progress has been made. It is clear however that the causes behind OA development and progression continue to remain largely elusive. Identification of those genes that, in conjunction with environmental factors, predispose to OA severity will lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying disease development and thus promote improved health strategies for prevention. An understanding of the molecular signalling pathways involved in the initiation and progression of the disease will improve clinical diagnosis and help identify improved, tailored treatment regimens. This chapter focuses on these issues, exploring the heritability of OA, known genetic risk factors, and specific traits and outcomes studied in the genetics of OA.

Laboratory genetic counselors need to use excellent communication skills when discussing genetic testing and relaying test results. Genetic counselors serve as key members of the patient’s circle of care. By using their counseling skills, they promote best practices in genetic testing. This chapter demonstrate the use of counseling skills in the laboratory setting. It outlines key factors to consider when communicating with other healthcare professionals, such as working without visual cues, building rapport, and gathering information.
