Abstract Though there has been recent interest in how Jane Austen’s faith influenced her novels, scholars have generally looked to her reading in philosophy and sermons, her spiritual expression, or her Anglicanism, and have neglected the more direct influence of the Bible. Yet judging from Austen’s lifelong church attendance and her reading of the Book of Common Prayer, we can conclude that she would have heard the Psalms read entirely through once every month of her forty-one years. This paper explores the resemblance between the psalmists and Fanny Price in terms of their shared experience of exile, their patterns of lament and reminder, their long wait for deliverance, and their final homecoming. Comparing Fanny Price’s character to the psalmists recasts her as a heroine in the Hebrew tradition, offering a new understanding of her passivity and suggesting that her author was more influenced by scriptural patterns than has been heretofore understood.

The article focuses on the novel “Mansfield Park”, which explores the category of «Englishness» through the prism of the concept of marriage. In the novel by Jane Austen marriages are presented through the opposition of Englishness/ Britishness, authenticity/simulation, and are also through the concepts of endogamy and exogamy. In the novel by Jane Austen only one marriage between Edmund Bertram and Fanny Price can be considered as the embodiment of genuine Englishness and, accordingly, endogamy. This becomes possible primarily due to the image of Fanny, whose pastoral essence, connected with the motive of authenticity, turns out to be very important for understanding “Englishness”.

Adapting Jane Austen’s 1814 novel to film, Mansfield Park (1999), Patricia Rozema transforms Austen’s Fanny Price into an active, witty, and rebellious heroine and centralizes the theme of slavery. The film’s fidelity has been earnestly debated, but Rozema claims that her film is faithful to the original source. As she points out, the seemingly incongruent link—between Austen and slavery—is not new. Austen’s Mansfield Park has been widely examined regarding the issue of slavery and Fanny has been commonly read as a character who represents the Other, women and slaves. These readings, however, reveal an uneasy relationship between feminism and post- colonialism by conceptualizing white women as a homogenous group of the powerless and oppressed. The relationship becomes more problematic when they readily equate Fanny with the non-white exploited racial Other, the slaves in Antigua. Analyzing the limitations of Austen’s representation of slavery, I examine how Rozema not only faithfully reproduces the limitations but also silences the Black Other—the slaves in Antigua—who only appear in Tom’s sketches of Antiguan slaves and sculptures of Black servants at Mansfield Park.

The works of Jane Austen mostly focus on the emotional entanglements of characters and it seems that they never get involved in social ideology and political consciousness. Her novel Mansfield Park focuses on the growth of the heroine Fanny Price: from a neglected young girl to be adopted to finally marry the second young master of the estate, Edmund Bertram, and become the spiritual mistress of the Park. However, in fact, this story contains Jane Austen’s strong imperialist ideology. The heroine Fanny’s growth process is also the process of continuous assimilation by the imperial ideology. Antigua provides the economic support for Mansfield Park and helps the people at the manor to establish the superiority of the hierarchy. At the same time, it is with the economic support of Antigua that the two young ladies of the estate are able to marry into wealthy families. This paper focuses on the colonial thoughts of Fanny and the description of locations in the novel.

Claude glasses-fashionable devices carried by travelers in search of the picturesque-provide a pertinent introduction to Mansfield Park, for most of its characters are engaged in a process that recalls the device: they are on the prowl for pleasing visual experiences, and they achieve these experiences by framing and exclusion. Fanny Price is as guilty of selective spectatorship as anyone: she cuts and frames her experiences and memories. Though one of the novel's most practiced spectators, she does not relish the gaze of others turned upon her; she cultivates invisibility, rhapsodizing over places of darkness and concealment. She begins to see more fully-and to be more fully seen-when she visits the public places of Portsmouth, but by the novel's end she can become a heroine only by not seeing the distress of others; she retreats (Austen regretfully reports) to old habits. Austen knew from inside how demanding could be the gazes directed upon young women by Enlightenment society: as a young writer her works had been examined first by family and then by an increasingly larger public. In Fanny Price, Austen provides a complex, nuanced picture of the pain of being seen. At the same time, Austen distances herself from the girl who would be invisible. In Mansfield Park Austen summons and then dismisses the figure who fears to be fully seen and to see fully.

My aim in this article is to argue that Henry James’s Washington Square (1880) is an unacknowledged reworking of Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park (1814). To this purpose, I have analyzed both narratives as fictions of domestic alienation in which the heroines refuse to allow their individuality to be subdued by; (a) patriarchal authority and parental mismanagement; (b) the interferences and meddlings of their manipulative aunts; or (c) the libertine corruption of their deceitful suitors. Although they have been subjected to coercion and manipulation, Fanny Price and Catherine Sloper rebel against the pressures of parental authority and emerge as the true preservers of moral integrity.

With the modesty then expected of a daughter of Britain's theatrical royalty, Fanny Kemble attributed the necessity of her 1829 stage debut to the hard circumstance of financial need. As she explained in her journal, hers was not an act of self-promotion; rather, she exposed herself to the scrutiny of London's critical establishment with the hope that interest in her performance might draw much-needed revenue into the cashbox of the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, a venue jointly managed by her father and uncle, Charles and John Philip Kemble. However rhetorically necessary the narrative was for preserving her respectability, Kemble's financial motivation was also very real. The theatre was fiscally impaired, never quite able to square itself in relation to the expensive footing upon which the new building was erected after the fire of 1808. With construction costs high and materials scarce in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars, Charles attempted to raise ticket prices in the new theatre to help cover his expenses, raising instead public ire, in the form of protracted demonstrations known as the Old Price Riots, which bullied him into restoring the original ticket prices.

This research aimed at identifying the category of directive speech acts found in the utterances of six female characters of six Jane Austen’s novels (Elinor Dashwood of Sense and Sensibility, Elizabeth Bennet of Pride and Prejudice, Fanny Price of Mansfield Park, Emma Woodhouse of Emma, Anne Elliot of Persuasion, and Catherine Morland of Northanger Abbey), and explaining the hedges used in directive speech acts. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method to collect, analyze, and discuss the findings which closely related to the classification of directive speech acts of female main characters in Jane Austen’s novels and the use of hedges in directive speech acts. The findings show that directive speech acts are formed imperatively, declaratively, and interrogatively. From all existing categories of directive speech acts (ask, order, command, request, suggestion, beg, plead, pray, entreat, invite, permit, and advise), the female main characters in Jane Austen’s novels only presents ask, request, advice, and suggestion. Hedges found in directive speech acts are not only used to show hesitancy but also to present certainty (I believe, I must) of the speakers’ previous knowledge. In addition, hedges are not the only marker that may show uncertainty, because exclamation ‘well!’ and ‘oh!’, as well as the contrasting conjunction are used to pause due to the uncertain statement.

Mansfield Park is the work of Jane Austen, a prominent 18th century female writer. In this novel, Austen depicts the city of London in an indirect way, thus expressing her concern for urban problems in the context of industrialization. Austen portrays two siblings from London, self-serving Crawfords, who neglect morality, and follow the philosophy of money, indirectly reflecting many of the city’s problems. In addition, the urban values gradually penetrate the country represented by Mansfield Park, and the characters in the novel are also affected, such as Maria eloping with Mr. Crawford and thus getting into a scandal, and the Bertram siblings and others staging degrading theatricals at home. And the novel’s heroine, Fanny Price, is the only character in the novel who resists the temptation of urban values. Austen sees her as a representative of the country culture, and her noble behavior represents the resistance of the country culture to the city values. Austen’s writing about the city in Mansfield Park also reflects her intention to try to correct the problems caused by urban development.

Abstract Neither Jane Austen’s writing, nor film adaptations of her novels made in the heritage film tradition seem particularly uncanny. Linked in the viewers’ minds with the representation of the English countryside stability, the films promote traditional values and take the spectators away from the problems and anxieties of the contemporary status quo. However, Patricia Rozema’s Mansfield Park (1999) uses Austen’s plot to question the colonial past by creating uncanny effects. Understood in this paper as an eerie resurfacing of the hidden (following Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, Sigmund Freud, John Hodgkins, Barbara Creed), the uncanny becomes a tool for inquiring into how contemporary filmmakers and their audiences revisit old stories. Rozema creates two subplots for the main narrative: a story about an artist’s growth (Fanny Price becomes a writer) and a colonial narrative, which foregrounds the Bertrams’ dependence on their property in Antigua and their use of slave labour. Both plot lines enrich the film with uncanny effects linked to the inherent intermediality of film adaptations. Grotesquely frightening verbal images from Fanny’s writing (extracts from Austen’s Juvenilia) and the uncanny visuality of Tom Bertram’s drawings frame the viewer’s revisitation of Mansfield Park while reminding him/her of a subversive potential – of the uncanny and film adaptations.

Sensory methods have been used to evaluate subjective apple characteristics such as juiciness, flavour, and texture. There is very little information to indicate the value wholesalers place on objective apple characteristics such as cultivar, grade, and fruit size. In this study, a hedonic price function for apples was estimated to evaluate the relationship between British Columbia (BC) apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) prices and the wholesalers’ perception of product quality characteristics. In this study, sales data and cultivar characteristics were obtained for three large wholesalers in western Canada that purchase BC fruit. Cultivar, fruit size, and grade were the most significant variables influencing apple prices. Wholesalers paid price premiums ($2.25 to $5.25 per tray) for speciality cultivars such as Gala, Fuji and Braeburn compared with traditional cultivars such as McIntosh, Red Delicious and Spartan. Large fruit size earned a price premium ($1.73 per tray) and small fruit were discounted ($2.00 per tray) compared with medium size apples. Apples graded Canada Extra Fancy (One Stripe) and BC Extra Fancy provided packing houses with price premiums ($1.50) over Canada Fancy. Apples in controlled-atmosphere (CA) storage earned price premiums ($0.96 to $1.89 per tray) in the months of January through June. Key words: Apple characteristics, wholesalers' preference, hedonic price function.

Domenico Scarlatti played a consistently significant role in English musical life from 1738 to the end of the century, even though he never travelled to England. His ‘absent presence’ was mediated by the eighty-three Scarlatti sonatas available in print in the eighteenth century. Scarlatti’s ‘English’ sonatas – defined here as those pieces available in print or manuscript to an eighteenth-century English player – display common compositional traits, in particular the frequent use of virtuoso techniques that appeal to the eye as well as the ear, such as crossed-hand passagework and leaps. English professional keyboard players used these visually virtuoso sonatas to establish their credentials in a competitive market, and the performance of this repertory – the most difficult in print – remained a benchmark for skilful execution at the keyboard to the end of the century. The performance venues for Scarlatti sonatas are difficult to document outside of anecdotal evidence drawn from personal accounts such as those by Charles and Fanny Burney. I provide new documentary evidence for semi-public performances of Scarlatti sonatas by Charles Jr and Samuel Wesley in the 1770s and offer further evidence that Scarlatti’s music held its place during a period of profound change in musical style and taste. Even as his sonatas were published and played to the end of the century, Scarlatti was frequently invoked in writings on music and aesthetics. His shifting position as exemplar or bad example is demonstrated in texts by Charles Avison, William Crotch, Uvedale Price, Sir John Hawkins and Charles Burney. Much like Arcangelo Corelli, another Italian with a strong absent presence principally mediated by print, Domenico Scarlatti had a powerful and lasting impact in England. This article presents an eighteenth-century portrait in absentia of the ‘English’ Scarlatti, suggesting how this elusive figure might be moved out of courtly isolation and into the thick of the eighteenth-century musical marketplace.

Caffeine is one of main quality parameter for teas, known for its ability to increase alertness, and has a slightly bitter flavor. As quality parameter, caffeine content will later determine flavor and aroma profile for teas that affect the price in global market. There were many factors that affected chemical compounds in tea, one of it was growth altitude. This research aimed to characterize caffeine spectra from tea liquor using UV-Vis visible which later can be used to relate caffeine content with the altitude of tea sample plantation. The optical transition of caffeine from brewed tea leaves liquor was measured from a variety of black tea products produced according to quality standards for global market. A total of 63 tea samples from four different grades (FANN, PekoFANN, FANN2, and Dust) and from 12 different tea estates in Indonesia have been replicated in their optical transitions and classified on the basis of caffeine content. It was found that caffeine content in tea products may vary depending on the grade and origin of the tea plantation. FANN grade has higher caffeine content that other grades while products from highland tea plantation generally have more caffeine content for all tea grades.

Specialty eggplants (Solanum melongena L.), cultivars with fruit shapes, sizes, and colors different from the typical teardrop-shaped, dark purple eggplant fruit, are an underproduced vegetable commodity in the southeastern United States. Seven cultivars representing seven different fruit types were grown in Charleston, SC, USA, in Spring and Fall 2018 and 2019 to assess cultivar productivity and net return. Despite year-to-year variability, Hansel (Chinese type), Millionaire (Japanese type), and Gretel (white fruit) generally had greater weights of both marketable (US Fancy and No. 1 fruit) and edible (US Fancy, No. 1 and No. 2) fruit than Fairy Tale (Sicilian type) and Patio Baby (Indian type), whereas the globe-fruited cultivars Black Beauty (heirloom) and Rosa Bianca (Italian type), had intermediate yields. Yields of plants after ratooning in the fall were lower than in the spring before ratooning. Prices per carton paid by local food hubs for US Fancy, No. 1, and No. 2 fruit were two to three times greater than wholesale terminal market prices. Nevertheless, fruit weights were a greater determinant of net returns than prices were. Growers in the southeastern coastal plain can maximize net returns from specialty eggplant crops by choosing cultivars that produce high fruit weights.

Abstract Introduction Broad application of immunotherapy to treat cancer has been hampered by low response rates in the clinics (~20%) and high failure rates of clinical trials. The lack of translational preclinical models that accurately replicate human immunological complexity is one of the reasons leading to ineffective candidates in clinical trials. There is an urgent need of advanced preclinical models that can enhance clinical trial success rate and improve clinical impact of immunotherapies. We present a novel 3D Ex vivo Patient Tissue platform combining short-term 3D ex vivo tumor culture system with high content image (HCI)-based analysis. The platform preserves tumor heterogeneity and tumor immune context, including (exhausted) tumor infiltrating lymphocytes. We report a quantification of ex vivo tumor responses to a panel of immunotherapies, including checkpoint inhibitors, tested on patient tissues from various cancers. Methods Patient tumor tissues were obtained from hospitals and tissue providers and processed within 24 hours to preserve the tumor microenvironment (TME). Tumor clusters from ovarian, cervical, breast, and non-small cell lung cancer patients were embedded in a protein-rich hydrogel and exposed to panels of immunomodulatory drugs in a 384-well format for 5-7 days. Phenotypic effects of the drugs on physiologically relevant morphological changes, such as tumor cell killing and immune cell proliferation, were measured using our proprietary automated HCI analysis platform. In addition, IHC and FACS analysis of primary samples as well as cytokine measurements were performed. Results Responses of ex vivo tissues to immunotherapies targeting various pathways (e.g., ipilimumab, pembrolizumab and STING agonists), combination treatments and selected controls were evaluated by automated phenotypic analysis platform. Based on their sensitivity, patient tissues were classified as immunotherapy responders or non-responders. A deeper investigation of the responder tissues was performed with IHC and FACS to pinpoint the critical TME components necessary for immunotherapy sensitivity. In addition, cytokine profiling was done in supernatants from treated ex vivo cultures to confirm the functional HCI readouts. Accurate and reproducible response evaluation demonstrated the feasibility of preclinical immunotherapy drug testing on primary patient material using this platform. Conclusion The 3D ex vivo patient tissue platform successfully combined drug testing protocols using fresh patient tumor tissue with preserved TME and advanced 3D HCI analysis. The platform offers a rapid, reliable and patient-relevant approach to test (clinical) immunotherapies for different solid tumours. It has the potential to significantly improve the preclinical evaluation of immunotherapies and support the decision-making process during progression of drug candidates to the clinic. Almost half a century ago, the late Alan S. Downer argued that the work of Alfred Wigan, Leigh Murray, and Fanny Stirling marks the transition to an increasingly colloquial and realistic style of acting on the London Stage usually attributed to the Bancrofts at the Prince of Wales Theatre. Of those three performers, only Mrs. Stirling has not received subsequent scholarly attention. The single detailed twentieth century account of the neglected actress, The Stage Life of Mrs. Stirling, published by her grandson, Percy Allen, in 1922, is useful but suffers from the pitfalls all too common to familial obsequies and lacks both theatrical and social/cultural context.

We document and analyze the empirical facts concerning one of the clearest evidence of speculation in financial trading as observed in the postage collection stamp market. We unravel some of the mechanisms of speculative behavior which emphasize the role of fancy and collective behavior. In our conclusion, we propose a classification of speculative markets based on two parameters, namely the amplitude of the price peak and a second parameter that measures its "sharpness". This study is offered to anchor modeling efforts to realistic market constraints and observations.

The presence of outliers has deleterious effects on the stock value because the unreliable information may discourage investors from investing in the stock. This associated problem paved way for the importance of intelligent prediction paradigm. However, existing stock forecasting models like Artificial neural network (ANN) performed better than traditional statistical models in handling the problem of non-linearity and complexity in forecasting stock price, it still lacked the capacity to handle outliers which are inherent in the stock market. Based on this, the researchers were motivated to forecast stock market based on the observation from literature that researchers do not report checking, prediction and proper management of outliers of any sort in stock market price forecasting. This paper addressed outliers’ deleterious effects on the stock value by proposing a hybrid Fuzzy Artificial Neural Network (FANN) Model that attenuates outliers in stock forecasting accurately. The proposed model was simulated using MATLAB. The historical Nigerian stock quantitative datasets from Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE) for 2008-2011 were used to test the simulated model. The Gaussian Membership function, due to its ability to handle minimum uncertainty principle, was used for the fuzzification of the extracted stock features to capture the stock dynamism. The proposed model’s predictive performance was calculated using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The outlier detection analysis of the actual historical stock data, ANN and the proposed FANN Model predictions was calculated using Z-score. The proposed model had a RMSE value of about 3.83 which shows that it is a reliable stock forecasting model. The Z-score value of the proposed model was calculated to be about 0.78 which shows that it significantly attenuates outliers in stock forecasting. In overall, the results proved that the proposed FANN model can handle outliers in stock forecasting.

Jelski przebywał w Peru w latach 1869–1879, Sztolcman dwukrotnie w latach 1875–1881 i 1882–1884, Kalinowski zaś przybył w 1889 roku i pozostał w tym kraju aż do śmierci.

Simpson told me that one day he had written a fugue on a subject of his own devising, and he took it along to Howells with not a little pride in his achievement. Howells looked at the fugue, said nothing, and then took out a fountain pen and, as Simpson put itwrote a complete fugue there and then, in his beautifully fastidious hand, as fluently and easily as if he was writing a letter, exploring all the intervals and implications of my subject in a way that I had not thought possible.

W 1617 r. W 1899 r. Dziekoński opracował nowy projekt, jeszcze bardziej okazały od poprzedniego. Rozbudowa miała być przykrywką dla architektonicznego majstersztyku. Dziekoński pozostawił nienaruszony korpus ówczesnej nawy, a w miejscu starego prezbiterium umieścił potężną w rozmiarach i majestatyczną w formie dobudówkę. Kopanie fundamentów nadzorował miejscowy budowniczy Jan Albrecht, a prace murarskie i budowlane zlecono firmie budowlanej Wacława Wędrowskiego z Warszawy. Zasadnicze prace budowlane zakończono w 1907 r. W 1914 r. ks. Szwarc mógł już z dumą oglądać wnętrze z ołtarzem głównym, ołtarzami bocznymi, amboną i organami. Główny ciężar budowy i wyposażenia świątyni spoczywał oczywiście na białostockich katolikach. Kościół został poświęcony 17 września 1905 roku.

Abstract This paper focusses on Fanny Lewald’s historical novel »Prinz Louis Ferdinand« of 1849. I examine the biographical as well as cultural-historical circumstances of the work’s genesis. Lewald clearly intended it as a critique of Prussian history, but at the same time the work’s focal point turns out to be a quite personal, female perspective. This perspective is mirrored in the prince’s experiences of loss and powerlessness. This leads me to explore the poetological dimensions of a writing in which the figure of the Prussian prince becomes a prismatic center of Lewald’s self-reflection. Here, the figure of Rahel Levin, as prominently portrayed by Lewald in her novel, plays a special role. It is precisely in her that the author’s interest in the political position of the Jewess in her as well as in Rahel Levin’s time becomes apparent.

The art of praise is considered one of the most famous arts of Arabic poetry, through which many poets have entered since the inception of the Arab dibba. Rather, it has become one of the main purposes in Arabic poetry. It is a wide arena in which poets use their charming words and meanings to attract the attention of those praised by sultans, princes, rulers, and others. So that by praising them with the most beloved qualities and good morals, as stated by Professor Abbas Mahmoud Al-Akkad, “The praiser does not satisfy his prince unless he describes his person and elaborates on describing him with the most beloved qualities to him, as a child does when he praises you and extends his hand to the sugar in your hand, and he does not hide from you that he says the good word to take after it the sweet sugar.

This article will focus only with the Energy Ministry’s institutional arrangements. The Energy Ministry appears to have come to the grand conclusion that the present state of Bungled power crisis is all due to the Bundled NEA. Hence, the Ministry’s prescription has been to unbundle NEA down to its bare skeleton! There is not a word on the Department of Electricity Development or the Nepal Investment Board – both high caste thread-bearing organizations! It is hoped that a thorough Implementation Completion Report (ICR) will be conducted on three decades of bungled/bundled power sector in Nepal by the World Bank, now that the prodigal son has returned after the 1995 Arun III debacle. Without the findings of that ICR/PCR, the multilaterals should refrain from the itch to unload their one billion US$ excess baggage on Nepal’s power sector.HYDRO Nepal JournalJournal of Water, Energy and EnvironmentIssue: 19Page: 6-10

The use of smart technologies, the internet of things (IoT), social media, and others produce a billion or more pieces of data in different formats. Big data has risen to become the most sought-after field in computer science. The e-commerce evolved significantly and continued to flow until now and even after the pandemic. So, big data technologies helped with the development and approach to collecting, storing, processing, and extracting the data in this field. This paper proposes an application programming interface (API) data extractor tool applied to a collection of e-commerce public websites named “Klarna dataset” to extract its data, and an analysis of the results. The study of e-commerce sales has given results matching universal e-commerce sales tendencies. The peak of the number of e-commerce transactions and sales was between 2018-2019. Thus, the highest e-commerce sales price was in the United States for “luxury” or “fancy” products, and the highest sales in Europe were in Frankfurt, Germany, for hardware and gaming material.
