This paper develops a mathematical model for condition-based maintenance optimization of multi-state systems. The majority of the existing literature on maintenance optimization assume that there is no additional cost incurred because of side effects of equipment degradation. Nevertheless, as the operating cost increases with equipment age and degradation, it is important to consider the degradation side effects in the maintenance decision-making process. An important feature of the proposed model lies in the fact that it incorporates side effect of degradation process into condition-based preventive maintenance optimization. We develop a continuous-time discrete-state Markov chain model describing the deterioration stochastic process of a single component. The component is modeled as a multi-state system, where each discrete state is characterized by a degradation level. Numerical examples show the importance of considering such side effect costs when optimizing the choice of maintenance policy. The proposed model is extended to deal with multi-state series systems. Using an example of a series system with two components, it is shown that preventive maintenance and side effect costs should not be optimized for each component individually, but from the perspective of the series system as a whole.

The application of mathematical programming for scheduling preventive maintenance in railways is relatively new. This paper presents a stochastic mathematical model designed to optimize and to predict tamping operations in ballasted tracks as preventive condition-based maintenance. The model is formulated as a mixed 0–1 nonlinear program that considers real technical aspects as constraints: the reduction of the geometrical track quality over time is characterized by the deterioration rate of the standard deviation of the longitudinal level; the track layout; the dependency of the track recovery on its quality at the moment of the maintenance operation; the limits for preventive maintenance that depend on the maximum permissible train speed. In the model application, a railway stretch with 51.2 km of length is analysed for a time period of five years. The deterioration model is stochastic and represents the reduction of the standard deviation of the longitudinal level over time. The deterioration rate of the standard deviation of the longitudinal level is simulated by Monte Carlo techniques, considering the three parameters Dagum probabilistic distribution fitted with real data (Vale, Simões 2012). Two simulations are performed and compared: stochastic simulation in space; stochastic simulation in space and time. The proposed condition-based maintenance model is able to produce optimal schedules within appropriate computational times.

Abstract Repairable systems are submitted to corrective maintenance and condition-based preventive maintenance actions. Condition-based preventive maintenance occurs at times which are determined according to the results of inspections and degradation or operation controls. The generalization of the models suggested makes it possible to integrate the dependence between corrective and preventive maintenances. In order to take into account this dependency and the possibility of imperfect maintenances, generalized competing risks models have been presented in Doyen and Gaudoin (2006). In this study, we revise the general case in which the potential times to next corrective and preventive maintenance are independent conditionally to the past of the maintenance process. We address the identifiability issue and we find a result similar to that of Zhou, Lu, Shi and Cheng (2018) for usual competing risks. We propose realistic models with exponential risks and derive their likelihood functions.

This study provides a cost-based analysis of preventive maintenance and administrative storage for the U.S. Marine Corps medium tactical vehicle replacement (MTVR). In the years 19952013, the Marine Corps acquired approximately 8,750 MTVRs as overseas obligations increased. As the current conflicts wind down and the Marine Corps returns to lower force levels, the Marine Corps will see excess capacity in its MTVR fleet. This study begins the process of finding a solution to managing this excess capacity. Based on net present value analysis for various combinations of continued preventive maintenance and storage of excess vehicles over their life cycle, this studys findings contribute to determining the most cost effective method of handling the Marine Corps MTVR fleet.

A company can use different strategies when performing maintenance. One strategy is corrective maintenance where maintenance is carried out after a failure has occurred. Another strategy is preventive maintenance. A combination of the two is often used. The preventive maintenance can be predetermined or condition based. Advantages with the condition based maintenance are e.g. that the replacement of parts can be planned according to observations indicating there’s an increasing risk of failure. When choosing preventive maintenance, the RCM method can be used to determine risk of failure modes and the cause of function failures. Decisions regarding the preventive maintenance should be based on knowledge in new techniques, history of failures and the equipment and competence available. Volvo Cars in Skövde is doing more or less the same preventive maintenance on machine tools regardless of whether it’s a new or old machine. The company is using condition based maintenance on some of the components and units. Mostly it consists of human inspections, a subjective control of the machine’s condition, and spindle vibration analysis. Through interviews it has been determined that new techniques are rarely implemented and that the decided maintenance plan for a machine is rarely changed. The company is aware of the development of new techniques for condition based maintenance and wants to investigate whether it is appropriate to evolve their condition based maintenance on machine tools. The techniques further investigated are measurement with Ball bar, monitoring of process parameters and geometrical verification. To make accurate decisions regarding the implementation of new techniques, a data collection of the history of frequent failures was done. To limit the amount of data a five year old processing line was studied. Data from the maintenance system Maximo was sorted by long failures from the recent years and by prioritizing with the Pareto principle it showed the recurring failures of ball screws. The component do have a condition based maintenance activity today, there is an inspection once a year. However, the inspection is rarely able to predict or find a failure on the ball screw. Four out of twenty-seven ball screws with fault have been changed after inspection over the last five years. By mapping the components failures on fifteen machine tools and when preventive maintenance has been done, several options for improvements were found. The cost of the replacement of a ball screw when a failure has already occurred is as much as ten times the cost of replacement before failure. This is caused by cost of scrap and long down time. A new, improved preventive maintenance task is therefore highly justified. The motif is both reducing the scrap cost related to failure and with increased availability. The company is recommended an investment in Ball bar as a new method for condition based maintenance. It should be used to increase the objective control of the mechanical parts of a machine tool. The method is not totally new for the company and relatively easy to implement. The current subjective control on the machine tools should be revised to increase the probability of finding degradation of functions. Today the activity takes rather long time and has therefore not been done in time, it should be shorter. The company is also recommended to investigate new methods for preventive maintenance continually. Today there is no employee with that mission and to evolve maintenance, the company has to be updated on new techniques.

Our aim is to propose a condition monitoring system adapted to the maintenance of a fleet of wind farms. We adopt an approach based on residuals generated by good operation models, learned from SCADA data acquired during fault-free periods. These models predict the temperature evolution of wind turbine nacelle components, with the aim of detecting faults using thermal residuals. In order to generate residuals whose variations can be easily interpreted by operators, we have chosen to use simple, linear and static models, composed of a small number of inputs. In order to be able to deploy the monitoring system to a wind fleet, it must be possible to apply it to any element of the wind fleet considered, without the need to adapt the method, and while maintaining acceptable detection performance.Consequently, the models on which the residual is based are learned automatically, from SCADA drive data, so that they can be generated simply for all components of any turbine in a wind turbine fleet. The first part of our research work thus consists in proposing a methodology for the automatic generation of linear and static models by applying a data-driven input variable selection algorithm. We propose several fault detection strategies whose performance we compare according to defined specifications: one using a single linear and static model, and the other combining information from a set of models. These simple models are used to generate residuals suitable for fault detection and meeting the detection performance criteria of an industrial application. At the end of this comparative analysis, a conditional monitoring strategy meeting the defined specifications was selected: that based on the majority detection decision of the set of residuals generated from these models.Models learned from data recorded on a wind farm of a certain technology can be applied with the same detection performance to wind farms with turbines of the same technology. This result makes residual analysis simpler for operators. The proposed conditional monitoring process was implemented among the operating tools of the company where the thesis work was carried out, and applied to the monitoring of all the turbine technologies in its fleet. This real-time application led to the detection of several faults under development, which were then taken over by the company's maintenance department.Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

The search for greater industrial safety has been the main guideline in petrochemical business, since the most of accidents are potentiated by the own nature of the operation, which involves flammable, combustible or toxic inventories. Many of the initiators of these events arise from the malfunction of their dynamic equipment, such as motors, pumps and compressors, with causes related to maintenance, operation or design. In this context, it is proposed a method for the implementation of improvements and projects directed to the continuous monitoring of dynamic equipment. The main objective is to increase the industrial safety and the availability, since the continuous monitoring allows a better supervision of the dynamic equipment, besides strengthening the application of condition based maintenance policy. The solution will be presented focusing on the monitoring of equipment temperature and vibration, which indicate of most failures or a situation of non-appropriated operation. This work starts with determining the method to prioritize the implementation, based on multicriteria and risk analysis, explain the criteria and their definition, culminating with the exemplification of the work in a real petrochemical plant. As a result, a risk matrix is presented for support in the prioritization of investment in continuous monitoring, also adding sensitivity analysis simulations for decision making.

Wind Energy published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Maintenance is essential in keeping wind energy assets operating efficiently. With the development of advanced condition monitoring, diagnostics and prognostics, condition-based maintenance has attracted much attention in the offshore wind industry in recent years. This paper models various maintenance activities and their impacts on the degradation and performance of offshore wind turbine components. An integrated maintenance strategy of corrective maintenance, imperfect time-based preventive maintenance and condition-based maintenance is proposed and compared with other traditional maintenance strategies. A maintenance simulation programme is developed to simulate the degradation and maintenance of offshore wind turbines and estimate their performance. A case study on a 10-MW offshore wind turbine (OWT) is presented to analyse the performance of different maintenance strategies. The simulation results reveal that the proposed strategy not only reduces the total maintenance cost but also improves the energy generation by reducing the total downtime and expected energy not supplied. Furthermore, the proposed maintenance strategy is optimised to find the best degradation threshold and balance the trade-off between the use of condition-based maintenance and other maintenance activities.

EDP Distribuição is the Distribution Network Operator, responsible for the distribution of electricity in mainland Portugal. In order to guarantee the levels of continuity and quality of service, legally required, it made a strong investment in the implementation of a private fiber optic network to support telecommunications systems, thus enabling the control and supervision of its technical installations as Substations (HV/MV) and Medium Voltage Remote Switchgear, from a centralized management. This step was a great improvement to the flexibility and reliability of the electrical distribution network. This project had as main motivation, the development of a calculation model to the Systematic Preventive Maintenance of the fiber optic infrastructure of a Distribution Network Operator, the EDP Distribuição, based on a Condition Based Risk Maintenance (CBRM) maintenance policy.Based on existing methodologies and those still in the development phase related to the management of technical assets, were identified measurable factors that influence the fiber optic cables were identified, and was created a heuristic model to get the Health Index and the Probability of Failure, in a realistic and workable way. With the initial objective of creating a Systematic Preventive Maintenance plan based on the condition and the risk, a survey was carried out and typified the criticality that affects each fiber connection. After gathering the indicators inherent to the Health Index, Failure Probability and Criticality, it was possible to create a mathematical model, using Graph Theory, to implement a CBRM based maintenance policy, that effectively reflects the current state, and allows to predict the future state of the technical asset in question.

AbstractThe advent of Industry 4.0 has revolutionised the way in which all aspects of a product or service are approached, and the railway sector is moving toward the adoption of this new paradigm. Maintenance in railways is traditionally based on a preventive approach that replaces parts at regular intervals or when a failure occurs. However, the 4.0 revolution implies the use of new strategies based on condition monitoring and predictive maintenance for moving towards Maintenance 4.0. In this work, the creation of a digital twin that helps in the adoption of new technologies is established. The proposed digital twin covers the trailer bogie of a high-speed train and is composed of three models: a 3D geometrical model, a finite element model and a multi-body model. These three models provide the initial information about the dynamic performance of the bogie that should be completed with feedback from the actual bogie operating in the real world.

Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) is one type of preventive maintenance policy. CBM has attracted lots of attentions of both academia and industry due to the development of advanced sensor technology and measurement devices. The proper implementation of CBM can reduce the frequency of random failures and the expected cost of maintenance during the lifecycle of a system. In this chapter, a brief overview of different maintenance strategies is first provided for the readers who are not familiar with maintenance optimization models. Then several elementary models about CBM will be introduced to help the readers get a general idea of the optimization models in this field.

This chapter presents data center operations management by giving four case studies of power distribution systems (PDS) of data centers (Tier I, Tier II, Tier III, and Tier IV). The four topologies of PDS have defined by the design of single points of failure and redundant equipment and systems. The concepts of Mean Time between Failures (MTBF) and Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) apply during PDS design for reduced system downtime. Moreover, MTBF and MTTR use for estimating system availability of each Tier classification. Human factors consider as critical part of data center operations that need to quantify and qualify on knowledge and skills such as certified levels. For sustainable data center operations, the new software for data center operations called Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) has deployed for monitoring and controlling entire system operations that interact among system of systems and human interfaces by deployed condition-based maintenance (CBM) as preventive and predictive conditions. Moreover, CBM performs as long-term cost saving for total cost of ownership (TCO) and energy efficiency.

In this chapter maintenance concept is defined and maintenance types are classified with regard to implementing maintenance policies toward preventive maintenance. Especially achieving planned maintenance policies toward preventive (planned) maintenance and condition based maintenance policies toward predictive maintenance is taken into consideration primarily. Maintenance concept is defined and maintenance types are classified. Due care is given for ‘Preventive Maintenance’ in this chapter. In general ‘Maintenance’ term could be defined as; The integration of all possible technical and administrative actions, including planning, supervising, monitoring and controlling toward retaining an item, a system, a machine to restore their original functional state in which they can perform the intended functions. In addition maintenance, include protective and corrective actions to keep the plant operational system in intended conditions or to maintain the acceptable manufacturing conditions. Optimum maintenance policies aims to sustain system reliability and robustness within minimum cost. In line with the progress of industry, increase in the system, material and manpower costs, increasing demand for robustness and the complex structure of the machines increases also the importance of maintenance policies. Maintenance types could be divided into two main parts namely; 1. Preventive Maintenance, 2. Corrective Maintenance. Preventive Maintenance is also classified into following sub groups; 1.a- Planned Maintenance, 1.b- Predictive Maintenance, 1.c- Advanced Maintenance Implementations; 1.c.1 Reliability Centered Maintenance 1.c.2 Risk Based Maintenance. All of these maintenance types elaborated with relevant figures in the chapter. In this chapter Comparison of Planned and Unplanned (corrective) Maintenance (With regard to transaction and output) is defined with a table. Additionally, Comparison of Planned and Unplanned (corrective) Maintenance (With regard to infra structure) is also tabulated. ‘Benefits of Preventive & Predictive Maintenance’ and ‘Predictive Maintenance Methods’ are defined with relevant descriptive figures in the chapter. For Corrective Maintenance, basic definitions and corrective maintenance steps, types of corrective Maintenance, improvement strategies in corrective maintenance effectiveness are also given. In the final part of ‘Results and conclusions’ expected and verified benefits of implementing maintenance policies for planned and predictive maintenance are explained. Comparisons in some maintenance policies is given.

Maintenance of the power equipment system is based on the industry standard of averaged volumes of standard maintenance and repair of power equipment, frequency and duration of the preventive measures, the nomenclature and consumption of materials and spare parts to perform operations. One of the more efficient uses of electrical equipment is to improve its maintenance system through the development and implementation of service strategies for the actual condition. The work proved the necessary conditions for the realization of electric service strategy on defining the main diagnostic parameter. The general mathematical model is proposed to implement the service strategy. The model is based on a study of basic parameters using random monotone normal type of process and diagnostic controlled parameter with three discrete product states (working, the state of preventive actions, and failure) and continuous operating time. The results of studies of the new techniques development for improving the operation of electrical systems are presented.

This chapter initially presents a brief information about production systems. At these systems, different types of maintenance policies are developed to cope with wear out failures. Mainly used maintenance policies can be classified as corrective, preventive, and condition-based maintenance. In the corrective maintenance, repair or replacement is applied whenever components of the machine breakdown. In the preventive maintenance approach maintenance activities are applied to the critical components on a periodic basis. On the other hand, maintenance activities are applied whenever critical reliability level is reached or exceeded. These types of maintenance policies are modeled using mathematical modeling techniques such as linear programming, goal programming, dynamic programming, and simulation. A review of current literature about the mathematical models, the simulation-based optimization studies examining these maintenance policies are categorized and explained. Besides, the solution methodologies are discussed. Finally, the opportunities for future research are presented.

This paper studies the joint production/inventory and condition-based maintenance control for a multi-product manufacturing system with setup and maintenance times under stochastic product demands. The problem is modelled as a semi-Markov decision process (SMDP). The objective is to find a joint production and maintenance policy that minimizes the long run expected discounted cost including setup, holding, lost sales, preventive and corrective maintenance costs. A Q-learning method with state aggregation (QLA) is proposed to find near-optimal policies for large-scale problems that cannot be solved to optimality due to the curse of dimensionality. The numerical results show that QLA provides well-performing policies in a reasonable computational time.

Recently, energy efficient and sustainable supply chain has attracted a great deal of attention. To achieve sustainability, it is of paramount importance to use environmentally friendly procedures in each stage of the supply chain including suppliers, production/manufacturing, and transportation. Transportation plays a critical role in supply chain since the suppliers and customers are typically distributed in large geographical areas. Nowadays, railway is considered as a primary mode of transportation. Railways are considered as complex systems that are subject to degradation and failures. To avoid failures, tremendous efforts should be invested on preventive maintenance (PM) for performing optimal maintenance actions. Proper PM actions such as condition-based maintenance (CBM) play a major role in keeping the supply chain from crumbling down and working with high efficiency. This chapter reviews promising research works in the application of state-of-the-art CBM strategies that contribute to the advancement of smart transportation system via fault diagnostics/prognostics.

The increasing complexity of vessels’ facilities and systems, the high economic impact of maintenance costs, and the need for high reliability and efficiency have led to a growing interest in condition-based maintenance (CBM). In this contest, machine learning (ML) has proven to be a powerful tool in approaching CBM tasks, as it can handle high-dimensional and multivariate data and extract hidden relationships within them in complex and dynamic environments. Here we propose a diagnostic model for monitoring the state of marine diesel engines and their components through the analysis of process parameters and ML tools. The model employs an artificial neural network (ANN) to estimate the optimal engine parameter value for normal condition operation. Deviations between measured real-time signals and optimal estimated values are used as indicators of potential faults, facilitating early detection and prevention. The calibration and performance evaluation of the diagnostic model are conducted on simulated fault data generated through GT-Power simulation tool. This approach to engine monitoring may overcome some limitations of ML algorithms based on supervised models, which rely on historical data containing information about anomalous activities or faults that are often not available.

The U.S. Army traditionally has used a time-based, on-condition maintenance paradigm that relies on at-aircraft inspections and periodic in-depth phase inspections to determine condition and ensure airworthiness. The result is a significant maintenance burden, both scheduled and unscheduled, and excessive aircraft downtime. The objective of the Aviation Development Directorate-Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (ADD-AATD) and Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation (SAC) Capability-Based Operations and Sustainment Technology-Aviation (COST-A) project was to develop and demonstrate an integrated set of high value diagnostics, prognostics, and system health management technologies that reduce scheduled inspections and preventive maintenance while enhancing safety. More than two dozen Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) technologies across six primary rotorcraft systems (propulsion, drive train, airframe/structural, rotor, electrical, and vehicle management) were matured to TRL-6. These technologies were integrated into a prototype laboratory on-board system built around the Integrated Vehicle Health Management Unit (IVHMU) currently installed in all UH-60 Black Hawk aircraft and successfully demonstrated to perform concurrently in representative simulated flight scenarios, using playback data from healthy and faulty components. These PHM technologies can enable the Army to transition to a condition-based maintenance (CBM) paradigm. This paper summarizes the overall Validation and Verification (V&V) approach, demonstration results, and additional details of technologies that demonstrated the most promise for near-term transition. COST-A work is on-going to further mature a subset of these technologies through flight testing.

Abstract. New “enlightened” and holistic maintenance strategies are shaping the industrial world from the inside, providing intelligent and focused solutions where high availability, reliability and safety are required. Maintenance planning and scheduling is an extremely daunting and multi-faceted task which involves competences from fairly different fields: customer support, quality, engineering, production, RAMS, cost estimation etc. In the aerospace sector, a significant percentage of Life Cycle Costs (LCCs) and, in particular, operating costs, are determined by Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) activities and the relative asset unavailability due to down-time or turn-around-time [1,2]. This is the reason why currently there is an ongoing intense effort in the research community and in the industry towards new maintenance strategies which could overcome the limitations of preventive maintenance thus streamlining operations, without jeopardizing mission safety. This research project is hence spot on and focuses on the development of optimized maintenance strategies, built around the system health status.

In condition-based maintenance, preventive replacement threshold and inspection scheme play important roles in maintenance performance. Major research considers cost as the main objective for measuring maintenance performance; here the average cost per unit time is used as the only objective in a single-unit system. The intention of this study was to investigate that how the average cost per unit time varies through changing replacement threshold and inspection scheme, the aim is to simultaneously determine an optimal replacement threshold and inspection scheme. The heterogeneity of hazard rate over stages of the equipment entails less frequent inspections when the equipment is at a healthy condition and more frequent inspections when the equipment is at a progressively deteriorated condition. Therefore the proposed condition-based inspection in the present work is non-periodic. A method based on dynamic programming is developed in order to implement a condition-based inspection scheme; furthermore the threshold for preventive replacement and the inspection scheme are simultaneously determined and then the optimal average maintenance cost is obtained.

Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) was instituted by the United States Navy in a policy outlined in OPNAV INSTRUCTION 4790.16 dated 6 May 1998. The goal is to move from time-directed preventive maintenance to condition-directed maintenance. It is hoped this will optimize readiness while reducing maintenance and manning requirements. The concept is that use of sensors, algorithms, and automated reasoning and decision making models to monitor equipment operations will provide critical analyses to operators that will help prevent impending failure. Red flags to operators allows maximization of maintenance effort that will focus limited resources to areas most needed to ensure safety and mission readiness while simultaneously minimizing operating costs (O & S), labor, and risk of mission degrading failures (Hedderich [3]). For the U.S. Navy, there is a large chasm to bridge between vision and reality. CBM technology is being slowly tested and integrated. But testing, modifying and back fitting all the Navy’s critical systems with CBM technology will be long term and costly and will be constantly faced with the dilemma of having just integrated one technology as it is being replaced by newer ones. In the mean time, more focus could be paid to possible interim phases that could be more quickly and cheaply integrated and still move the Navy forward in utilizing CBM technology. Autolog is such an effort and is offered here as an application and process to gather more real time data needed for CBM from one source that can be quickly and easily provided to distant engineering support activities for Gas Turbines systems while also easing record keeping and data transmittal requirements for the fleet.
