Texto completo da fonteToday, full social participation paradigm places reading in fundamental competence. In this context, our thesis seeks to understand reading development in intellectual disability and to approach possible interrelations between different cognitive domains and reading. Our longitudinal study follows reading development of thirty non-reading children in Ulis School in Rouen Academy. The experimental protocol measures reading skills and general and specific skills involved to read during three school years. For comparison, 30 non-readers children without intellectual disability are evaluated with the same protocol from preschool third year to primary school second year. The developmental sequences of reading observed further highlight the importance of knowledge of the name and sound of letters in the development of reading in intellectual disability, while phonological skills would develop due to this written language knowledge. However, these children may have similar developing reader profiles to those of typically developing children. These results question the definition and development of phonological awareness, its interrelations with phonological memory and its impact on the future level of reading. The social benefits of our research aim to change the representation of the reading developmental potential in intellectual disability for an inclusive school where needs must guide the response to the intervention and not the diagnosis

Texto completo da fonteThe strategic aim of this research was to lay the foundations for the creation of tools for the early detection of reading difficulties in newcomer non-francophone children (EANA) of primary school age. To this end, we recruited 179 EANA children and 259 French children. The two groups were matched on the duration of attendance at primary school. They completed a series of cognitive and linguistic tests, and parents answered questionnaires on languages spoken and previous schooling. We observed that EANA children's decoding scores were lower than those of French children and showed considerable heterogeneity. Children who had started to learn to read in another language, especially if it was a Latin orthography, obtained higher scores than others. Younger children had lower scores than older children, probably due to greater experience of reading in their first language. Whether the children had attended school before arriving in France and the language family of the languages spoken (other than French) had no effect on word reading skills. Then, we observed that the main cognitive-linguistic predictors (phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming, phonological short-term memory and vocabulary) explained much of the variance in decoding skills among EANA children. In line with previous literature on oral language assessment of second language learners, we stressed the importance of managing the typological distance between first languages and French, as well as the degree of exposure to French. With this in mind, we examined the predictive power of a visual-verbal paired associate learning task (PAL), arguing that it should not be biased by the amount of exposure to French, and that it is possible to create items that are independent of the typological properties of French. Visual-verbal PAL scores were strongly correlated with decoding skills and showed a unique contribution comparable to other cognitive and linguistic predictors in EANA children. In French children, they showed a moderate simple correlation with decoding skills and a low unique contribution. We further investigated the mechanisms that explain the relationship between visual-verbal PAL and decoding skills by conducting a systematic review. Previous literature has shown that the verbal learning mechanisms of visual-verbal PAL are central to its relationship with decoding skills, at least in alphabetic orthographies, and that cross-modal association learning may also be involved, although the results are inconsistent. We tested these components in the French subsample of our first study and showed that verbal learning best explained the relationship between visual-verbal PAL and decoding skills. According to the literature, this relationship may be stronger with the reading of complex words (words with contextual graphemes and irregular words) than with the reading of simple words. We therefore conducted a second study of 186 first-grade children as part of a second data collection but were unable to confirm this hypothesis. This suggests either that there is no causal relationship between visual-verbal PAL and decoding skills, or that verbal learning is important for word and nonword decoding in general, regardless of grapheme complexity or word regularity. Future longitudinal studies controlling for all cognitive-linguistic predictors of decoding skills are needed to determine whether visual-verbal PAL has a causal contribution to decoding skills in French and may represent a sensitive tool for detecting children at risk of reading failure (particularly among EANA children) in combination with other measures

The objective of this study is to update the predictors of healthy eating for adult Canadians with recent data (Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) -Nutrition 2015) and check the effect of new variables. This, because studies conducted to date to assess the determinants of healthy eating are either old studies or recent ones are still based on 2004 data. In this context, we evaluated the quality of the diet with the healthy eating index, 2005 version adapted to the Canadian context (HEI-C2005), then we carried out a multiple linear regression with as variables socioeconomic and demographic factors, health, level of physical activity and perceived general well-being. Our results show that currently, the diet quality of most Canadians needs to be improved (an average index of 68/100 with a standard deviation of 12, knowing that a value of 80/100 or more is the threshold of a healthy diet). However, there has been an improvement over 2004 (average index of 50,2 / 100). For predictors, the known effect of the classic variables (age, gender, education, well-being, income, ethnicity and level of physical activity) has not changed. Regarding what has not been verified in previous studies, our results show that food insecurity and vegetable prices have a negative effect on the diet quality. People with diabetes and people who don’t have cancer have a healthier diet than non-diabetics and people with cancer. Also, our results show that the price of fruits and the residence area have no effect on the diet quality

Texto completo da fonteIn this thesis, we consider the issue of on-line prediction of a time series by combining individual predictors. We focus more particularly on the real problem of forecasting the French electricity load. To predict a sequence of observations we suppose to observe them step by step and to have access to a finite number M of individual predictions. The aim is to aggregate them in order to achieve, under general assumptions, the predictive performance of an a priori unknown referee: the Oracle predictor. This is valid in a stable situation, otherwise we talk about predictive breaks. We study in detail the case of breaks. We suppose that the best predictor (according to a given criteria) can change with time and the sequence of the optimal predictor defines a new Oracle. We suggest new combining methods to track this Oracle on-line, based on change-point methods. The corresponding mixing algorithm we propose are the Multi-Mixing and the AFTER-Break algorithms. We then give promising simulation results for the Multi-Mixing algorithms. For the AFTER-Break algorithms we obtain approximate Oracle bounds and asymptotic results that assure that the combined predictor performs nearly as well as the predictive partition. The last part of this thesis is devoted to application. We build individual predictions based on the operationnal models in used at EDF and show the interest of our methods to predict under typically hard conditions

Texto completo da fonteUntil recently, two different kinds of research have been separately conducted on knowledge about mental world: those on metacognition that have studied knowledge about cognition and research on theory-of-mind, which refers to knowledge about mental states. A novel perspective of research tends to study the link between metacognition and theory-of-mind developments. The assumption is that theory-of-mind is a cognitive tool for understanding the cognitive functioning – i.e. metacognition. In this framework, we conducted a longitudinal study to investigate the developmental relationships between a special kind of metacognition – metamemory which is knowledge about memory functioning – and theory-of-mind, and the contribution of some cognitive precursors on declarative metamemory – language and episodic memory. Thirty-one children were recruited and evaluated on these four competencies every four months during two school years. Multiple regression analyses conducted on metamemory scores confirmed that theory-of-mind competences play a role in the declarative metamemory emergence

Texto completo da fonteSome studies in literature show the involvement of phonological knowledge in printed words processing. The goal of this work is to contribute to describe the nature of the code involved in printed word recognition, and to understand the mechanisms of phonological knowledge involvement in reading. We firstly want to show that the early steps of printed words recognition involve a phonological code described in terms of phonological features, by showing that skilled readers are sensitive to infra-phonemic elements and that a hierarchical organisation of these features could exist. Otherwise, this work aims to provide clues in favour of the existence of phonological impairments in dyslexic children, to define some deficits of their infra-phonemic organisation, and to show that these deficits could be different according to the type of developmental dyslexia. On the one hand, we present the theory and the experimental studies in cognitive psychology and in psycholinguistics that lead us to some questions. On the other hand, the presentation of studies in linguistics and in neuropsychology provide clues in favour of our hypothesis. In the theorical part, we present a reading model that involve two reading mechanisms based on phonological features, and our hypothesis allow us to test this model. Our experimental word is developped in several steps to provide behavior data that lead us to discuss our hypothesis about adult skilled readers, normal reading children, and dyslexic chilmdren

Texto completo da fonteLecture Quiz is a game used to provide more active and participant students in lectures. The game is based on a server, a teacher client and a student client. In a master thesis done in 2007, Ole Kristian Mørch-Storstein and Terje Øfsdahl have explored concept of game to be used in higher education and develop a prototype game to further evaluate that concept. Their game has three components; the first one is the server part running on a server. This component connect to a database and provide the services to the others component. The second component is called teacher client, when running the game on a lecture the teacher will use this one to show the game. This one runs on the teacher computer such as a laptop or a PC. The last component is the one running on a mobile phone of students; they will use it to interact with the game. The purpose of the previous game is about illustrating the concept of using game in the lecture. For the game to be used and accepted in the lecture and contribute to the educational environment, a lot of matters need to be considered and improved. In this master thesis, the goal is to extend the Lecture Quiz game with new functionalities that can enhance the management and gameplay of the system. The focus is on the game platform and architecture so that the game can be usable, flexible.

Texto completo da fonteBackground: Autism spectrum disorder is characterized by a large heterogeneity at both the level of its etiology and in the developmental course of its core features. In this context, it is worth stressing the need for developing early interventions and evaluate their effects as well as questioning the role of the family.Study 1: This study aims to examine the effect of context on social attention in young children with ASD. Children with ASD look less at the face especially in contexts that are less socially engaging. The present Social attention task may be used as a predictive factor of a child’s progression.Study 2: The objective of this study is to characterize the developmental trajectories of young children who received Early Start Denver model intervention, and to identify factors that may influence their progression. Children show significant improvements in their level of comprehension and expression. Initial level of comprehension is a predictor of children's progress in the field of expressive communication. The social attention task is a predictor of the initial level of social skills.Study 3: In the third study the parental experiences of Parent Mediated Intervention via a telehealth program is explored. Interviews conducted after the program ended indicate that Telehealth may be relevant to the dissemination of Parent Mediated Interventions but caution is also needed as these interventions should not replace early intervention. Conclusion: Heterogeneity in ASD is present from early childhood and is expressed through significant differences in developmental patterns. This heterogeneity is also reflected in the children's response to an intervention. The search for predictive factors and the active ingredients of the intervention is necessary to offer the most individualized support possible. Finally, the support of parents is essential to improve their quality of life, foster their educational practices and to promote paths continuity

The first one is the aggregation of predictors of Causal Bernoulli Shifts using a Bayesian approach. The second one is the aggregation of predictors of what we define as sub-linear processes. Locally stationary time varying autoregressive processes receive a particular attention; we investigate an adaptive prediction scheme for them. In the last main chapter we study the linear regression problem for a general class of locally stationary processes

Texto completo da fonteModern power systems time-domain simulations require important computational resources due to the resulting differential algebraic systems dimension and stiffness. In addition, some simulated signals oscillation frequency dramatically limits the classical schemes step size, even in steady-state during which they are close to sinusoids oscillating at system nominal frequency. That's why the sinusoidal predictors method proposed in this thesis aims at taking this property into account in order to enhance solver performances while controlling the integration error. It consists in decomposing the solution into two parts: a sinusoid, whose Fourier coefficients are fixed for each time integration interval and then updated by parametric estimation, and a correction term on which the DAE system is rewritten and solved using an adaptive step size integration scheme. A particular focus has been given on the estimator choice, given its precision direct impact on the step size and its indirect effect on the global method stability. The finally developed estimator consists in computing Fourier coefficients minimizing a system stationarity measurement. As it converges in steady-state, the correction term is progressively damped, which enables to considerably increase the step size. This method, integrated into the reference solver SUNDIALS IDA and interfaced with an industrial simulation engine, enables to very significantly accelerate simulations in comparison with a classical implementation

Texto completo da fonteLanguage does not easily an instrument of thought. Because this resistants creates a gap between thought and the representation of it, reading becomes a space and a moment of uncertainty. This is where interpretation and the reader's work start, putting reading to the test. It's this movement of reading which was observed on reading hamlet. Because referring to the work and the structure of the texte cannot be only source of meaning, the voice concept, developed by hermeneutics in paul ricoeur and hans georg gadamer's works, together with michel foucault reflexions on speech formations, allowed to minimise the theoretic influences which mix the texte to its author's life, the reader's subjectivity and their unconscious. These objections can be found un the third part, devoted to the critical analysis of hamlet in french. At the end of this essay, another reading of hamlet is suggested which tries to avoid the homology between a text and a critical speech. Defining the conditions in which uterrances are produced, showing how important constraints are in any communic syst on any speech situation, a history of language is formulated which is also that of hamlet. After this study, reading must be seen as a minor language, an archeology, a piece of adjusting, undertaken by the theater community, determining any representation on stage

Texto completo da fonteThis research focuses on the assessment of reading skills and reading-related skills among adult with developmental dyslexia (DD) aged 20 to 30 for whom a diagnosis of DD had been established in the early years of schooling. We compared 24 adult with DD to 60 typical reader of the same chronological age and having been schooled at least during 2 years at the University) in a group study (to highlight the skills that are deficient in adult students with DD) and a multiple case study (to highlight the proportion adult students with DD who, for a given skill, had a deficit) in 4 experiments. The first was focused on reading-related skills (phonemic segmentation, phonological and visual short-term memory [STIVI], working memory, Visual abilities and rapid naming [RAN]); the second on word-level reading skills; and the third on reading comprehension, which was compared to listening comprehension with a protocol as similar as possible in terms of language and memory load; the focus of the fourth experiment was on visuo-attentional processing, assessed using two tasks: a detection target's task and a research target's task. In almost ail these experiments, accuracy and speed were examined. The results confirm the robustness and the frequency of the deficits in adult with DD in three major areas: (1) word-level readïng skills, (2) reading-related phonological skills (phonemic segmentation, phonological STM, working memory, and rapid naming), and (3) sentence comprehension, whatever the modality (written or oral). Comparatively, the Visual and visuo-attentional deficits are less robust and less prevalent

Texto completo da fonteFirst of all, this thesis evolves the three classics acceptations of the term fragment of which the three classics status of a text derive from. By being based on Heraclitus, the classics French moralists and the German romantics, a genealogy is drawn from the notions of maxim, aphorism and fragment, genealogy of which emerge our concept of fragment(s), which dissolve all the text's status in only one, and is thus summed up: through the maxim, the aphorism is showing, and through the aphorism, the fragment(s) is speaking. Then, from Deleuze and Guattari's linguistic and philosophical conceptualisations, and thanks to Blanchot and Eisenstein, the concept of fragment(s) is constructed, which is defined as the instant of the meeting that is the experiment of a process of deindividualizing subjectivation (between author, work and reader), on the threshold of the eternal return. Finally, armed with this concept, a grasp of the Nietzschean's text is proposed – reading(s) of Nietzsche. By reviewing the editorial history of Nietzsche's texts (history which combine philology and philosophy in the Nietzschean's figure of the centaur) the four appendix of this thesis are then constructed – and they are forming one body with it. Besides three of them included in the body thesis, the fourth – about the genealogical method that is defined by Nietzsche or Foucault – is the second volume's subject (ex corpore thesis). These vade-me(te)cum are picking of fragment(s) within the Oeuvres philosophiques complètes edited by Colli and Montinari and are meant to be as the same time, as this actual thesis, theory and practice of the fragment(s)

Texto completo da fonteWhen one reads the works written about nietzsche over more than a hundred years, one cannot help but be surprises by the number of interpretations offered about this author (different interpretations, often contradictory, christian and anti-christian, philosemite and antisemite, psychologist of the female soul and misotynist. . . ). When one read the complete works of nietzsche it is impossible not to highlight a truly obsessional worry about the people reading his texts. Having a classic philologian education, nietzsche is conscious of the active role played by the reader in thefuture of the writing 'abandoned' by the author. This awareness, brings him to weave the portrait of the ideal reader into the theme of his work : a friend, an alter ego of his sufferance, a philologist like himself who has managed to surpass traditional philology by opening it to philosophical perspectives, but also a poet and a musician nietzsche is very conscious of the impossibility of finding this reazder, the perfect monster. On the other hand, he knows full well the readers he refuse : the general public, the fanatics, the political parties and the german culture of the period. His hope of being well-read, brings him to hope of finding the right readers in another country france, in another epoch in the near or distant future. Then the philologian dissects the activity of reading. He knows what certain books can undergo in the hands of some readers (the writings of democriteus, pascal, scot erigene, schopnhauer. . . ). The readers base their judgement on the culture of their period, and by their reading, they introduce their own values into the texts. Their internal forces of holding power (die wille zur macht) lead them to interprete what the author has said and ther present the interpretation as being the meaning of the text. However, nietzsche was afraid of what the wrong type of reader was going to do to his works because, by their interpretation they risked inteoducing the very values that

Texto completo da fonteThe experiments presented in this study deal with the role of attention in reading. Three principals questions are adressed. Firstly, we want to determine if the identification of a written word is entirely automatic or is there some need for selective attention? if word recognition needs for attention, is word identification based on a selection of the whole string (for example the whole word) or is it based on a selection of a smaller unit (for example, the letter). Finally, we want to specify if the involvement of attention in reading depends on the familiarity of the letter string to read. We chose to examine the role of attention in the identification of a letter string by manipulating spatial attention with a cue presented immediately before the appearance of the letter string. The visual letter string presented after the visual precue is either a familiar word or a pronounceable nonword (pseudoword). In addition to the lexical status, we manipulate the length of the visual letter strings. They have 4,6,8 or 10 letters. In a first study (experiments 1,2,3 et 4), spatial attention is drawn in advance by presenting a cue either near the beginning or the end of a foveal letter string. Our empirical data show that letters situated near the cued side are better identified than letters on the uncued side but this cueing effect is stronger for pseudowords than for words. In a second study (experiments 5 and 6), we vary the size of the cue rather than only its location in the visual field. Different cues will set the subject's attention on visual areas of different size. Results show better performance when the cue indicates the size of the letter string than when the cue indicates a shorter size. Furthermore, we show that an adequate preparation to the global size of the letter string is more beneficial to the identification of words than pseudowords, at least for 10-letter strings. Taken together these results can help to develop a model of the attentional processing in reading close to the model proposed by laberge & brown (1989). Words identification could require an alignement of attention on the entire letter string whereas unfamiliar letter string processing could engage a complementary kinds of operations: the selection of individual letters or letter-clusters followed by an orienting of attention along the string

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis studies the visual strategies specific to each reading activity and both bottom-up and top-down factors impacting those strategies. The underlying hypothesis is that visual strategies are characterized by common parameters whose weight varies across the strategies. The 1st study centers on the modeling of five visual strategies in order to determine their common parameters and their respective weights in each strategy. The 2nd and 3rd studies focus on visual and semantic determinants during a scanning task and show that only the visual factor (i. E. Text layout) was critical for visual strategies. The results of the 3rd study in which a priming paradigm was used also indicate the possibility of priming the text layout. This primer, when inconsistent with the text it precedes, disturbs reader’s eye movements. The 4th and final study, characterized by the use of Web pages to reach experimental conditions as close as possible from "natural" reading and visual word-search situations, suggests that the effect of online banners can be observed only for banners placed right next to the central text and the effect of banner animation differs according to the depth of text processing. All manipulations have deepened the knowledge on the common parameters and the determinants of visual strategies. They also deepened the question of task-switching performed by readers while covering a text. Thus, this thesis provides both fundamental and applied perspectives

Texto completo da fonteOur research focuses on the instrumentation of scholarly reading, an intensive reading which aims the production of a new content reifying the reader's interpretation of a corpus. Despite the emergence of a digital culture, paper remains the preferred media for such practices. In order to prevail, digital medium has to offer more than paper. In addition to the graphical reason introduced by the latter, it has to offer its computational reason. Our thesis proposes that, for a successful exploitation of digital documents in a scholarly reading activity, one has to consider the reader's environment as the center of the computerization process instead of the sole document. We base our study on the disciplines of document and knowledge engineering to demonstrate that with this approach it is possible nowadays to produce software devices answering to the criticism of digital documents

Texto completo da fonteDuring the last decades, a part of psychology focused on happiness and several measure instruments have been developed. World-wide surveys and series of cross-cultural studies show that the level of happiness differs from a nation to another. The authors suggest that the level of happiness can be largely explained by the variations in social qualities like wealth, equality, freedom, etc. Happiness is higher in the countries where social qualities are higher. However, Brazil seems to have a level of happiness higher than France whereas social qualities are higher in France. Other variables would play a role in happiness. Psychosocial variables, differing between cultures and having a positive impact on happiness, could explain a part of the Brazilians 'higher happiness. In order to understand better why happiness differs between Brazilians and French, we observed the influence of psychosocial variables on happiness which levels are likely to be higher in Brazil than in France. In the current study, we examine the impact of religion, social relations and extraversion on happiness average between 102 Brazilian students and 104 French students. We also compare the levels for each variable between our two cultures. The data show the complexity of the relation between culture and happiness. Results suggest that the influence of religion, social relations and extraversion on the level of happiness is moderated by the culture. Religiosity and social relationships have a stronger impact on happiness in Brazil than in France whereas extraversion seems to have a stronger influence in France than in Brazil

Texto completo da fonteThis study of Mallarmé's work focuses on the question of reading. The notion of reading usually consists in deciphering a text to discover its content or its meaning. We seek to question this notion by swinging the act of deciphering in favour of the act of producing knowledge and significance, that is, by studying the text's inner critical activity. Our study is a reading of Mallarmé's work which goes beyond the mere commentary in order to uncover the "mise en scène" of the text. Thus, from the well-known crisis that forced young Mallarmé to question the whole poetic inheritance, to the famous dream of the Book, we will endeavour to survey the theatricality of writing and reading within and by Mallarmé's work. The critique of reading in Mallarmé's work claims a critical reading for every work that makes the reader "better", or makes the listener a "musician" (with "this music [that] takes the listener for an intelligent person, for a musician […] I become a better man […] also a better musician, a better listener", says Nietzsche), since a piece of work is to be carried out no better nor differently
