This chapter examines the bidirectional relationship between depression and stroke. It is now clearly established that depression is a significant risk factor for stroke, and vice-versa. We review the main biological and demographic factors underlying the association between stroke and depression, the predicted mortality, the mechanism of post-stroke depression, and recent findings on its pharmacological prevention. We conclude by stressing the need for developing effective strategies to manage the burden of illness associated with these interacting conditions. As with the cardiovascular system depression has major effects on the occurrence of stroke. Morbidity and mortality are increased for patients with cerebral vascular accidents (CVA) who are depressed and is seen even in a 10-year follow-up. Depression should be treated concurrently with the management of the acute phase of a CVA.

Focusing on the microvariation found in complementizer agreement (CA) in Germanic dialects, this chapter seeks to reconcile the syntactic and post-syntactic analyses given in previous treatments. Rather than treating CA as a single construction in need of a single analysis, the CA data is examined here in light of both variation and recent work on grammaticalization. The CA patterns from different dialects are treated as the outputs of separate but closely related grammars, and the possibility of multiple grammars in close contact or in competition is considered. The variation in Germanic CA is treated as the output of grammatical change in progress with multiple stable points along the cline, many of which are represented in the sample of currently spoken Germanic languages and dialects.

Aculturarea stilistică prin care Părintele Mihai Gojgar câștigă în scris este entuziasmantă. Nu sunt tâlcuiri ale Evangheliei, ci redescoperiri ale temeiurilor sale. Credința nu are nevoie de argumente, ci de fundamente. De fundamente luminoase. Unele dintre texte poartă titluri și post-titluri așezate în paranteze. Semnul adaptării din...scris pe care autorul o face conținutului său. O nevoie firească în lucrul ca jurnalist. Editorialistul se stinge luminând în duh omiletic. Aici e cheia frumuseții textelor acestora. Departe de a fi moraliste ori „lecționarde” rândurile ce le veți parcurge pot produce o serie de adaptări cuminți în tahicardia ce ne încearcă la vreme de zgomotoasă pandemie. Cum înțelege Părintele inimile ascultătorilor? Desigur, ascultându-le. Se simte în texte grija pastorală. Cea care mustră cu drag și dă măsură așteptărilor duhovnicești. Titlul ne arată aceasta. This book describes how one February night crystalized the values and personal risks that shaped the life of the author of this book. The frigid Moscow night in question was in 1984, and the author, a Washington Post correspondent, reported signs that Soviet leader Yuri Andropov had died. The CIA at first dismissed the reporting, saying that “Doder must be smoking pot.” When Soviet authorities confirmed Andropov's death, journalists and intelligence officials questioned how a lone reporter could scoop the multibillion-dollar US spy agency. The stage was set for Cold War-style revenge against the journalist. After emigrating to the United States from Yugoslavia in 1956, the author committed himself to the journalist's mission. He knew that reporting the truth could come at a price, something driven home by his years of covering Soviet dissidents and watching his Washington Post colleagues break the Watergate story. Still, he was not prepared for a cloaked act of reprisal from the CIA. Taking aim at the author, the CIA insinuated a story into Time magazine suggesting that he had been co-opted by the KGB. His professional world collapsed and his personal life was shaken as he fought Time in court. In this book, the author reflects on this attempt to destroy his reputation, his dedication to reporting the truth, and the vital but precarious role of the free press today.

Cartea prezinta si dezbate situatia ariilor rurale profund dezavantajate de la nivelul Romaniei, precum si dezvoltarea inteligenta a acestora. Ca sa facem o mica paranteza, ea nu se adreseaza doar spatiului romanesc, intrucat propune metode de surprindere si de tratament pentru ariile subdezvoltate. Astfel, ea prezinta doua perspective: cea in care sunt determinate acele arii rurale profund dezavantajate si cea de-a doua parte, care cuprinde modul in care ariile respective pot fi dezvoltate. Complexitatea problematicii spatiului rural reprezinta o tema in care geografii o au sub observatie, identificand tipuri de probleme cu care acestia se confrunta. Odata cu progresul tehnologic si cu circulatia fluxurilor de informatii la care are acces cu precadere populatia din mediul urban, spatiul rural incepe sa prezinte un dezinteres pentru actorii ce ar putea sa le mentina. Spun sa le mentina, intrucat trendul la nivel global este acela ca, preponderent, locuitorii sa ii regasim in mediul urban. Desigur, in aceasta conjunctura decalajale tind sa creasca si mai mult intre administratii si, implicit, intre nivelul de trai din aceeasi societate.

Implanted venous ports in children are commonly placed by pediatric interventional radiologists, primarily through the internal jugular vein to allow long-term delivery of intravenous access. The ideal location of the catheter tip is the junction of the superior vena cava and right atrium. High catheter tip positions may result in failure of the port catheter due to venous thrombosis, catheter occlusion, or fibrin sheath formation, whereas low catheter tip positions may cause catheter occlusion, cardiac arrhythmias, or perforation. This chapter describes indications, contraindications, equipment, techniques, and complications of the endovascular snaring technique of central venous port tip revision in children.

Since September 11, 2001 (9/11), the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Department of Defense (DoD) have operated together in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere during counterterrorism operations. Although the global war on terrorism provided a common purpose, it was actions taken in the late 1980s and 1990s that set the foundation for their current relationship. Driven by the post–Cold War environment and lessons learned, policy makers made military support the Intelligence Community’s top priority. In response, the CIA and DoD instituted changes that altered their relationship. While congressional debates over the Intelligence Community’s future were occurring, the CIA and DoD were expanding their relationship during operations. By the late 1990s, some policy makers and national security professionals became concerned that intelligence support to military operations had gone too far, weakening long-term analysis. Despite concerns, no major changes to intelligence organization or priorities were implemented. These concerns were forgotten after 9/11, as the United States fought two wars and policy makers fixated on terrorism. The DoD/CIA operational relationship has led to successes, but the CIA’s counterterrorism and military support requirements place a significant burden on the organization. As the sole independent US intelligence organization, the CIA was conceived to separate intelligence collection from the institutions that develop and execute policy. Its increased focus on support to military operations weakens this separation, reduces its focus on strategic issues, and risks subordination to the DoD. The CIA and DoD are the ones affected by this evolving relationship, but policy makers’ preference for military force and the militarization of foreign policy has led both organizations down this path.

Raluca Maria Ganciu este o melancolica incurabila, si nu vad de ce ar fi altfel. Este starea ei nativa ca om si poet. Sudden cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) is still the commonest cause of death globally. CPAs are usually categorized according to where they occur, with out-of-hospital arrests accounting for approximately 75% of CPA deaths and in-hospital the remaining 25%. The arrests are also sub-categorized according to the initial rhythm, with the best outcomes associated with shockable rhythms. Large registries have demonstrated a variable incidence of out-of-hospital CPAs in adults (50–150/100,000 person years), with a range of outcomes (3–16% survival to hospital discharge). The majority of CPAs in adults are due to cardiac causes, but teaching surrounding the management of cardiac arrests now includes an increased focus on the identification and correction of underlying causes, irrespective of the rhythm. While identifying an underlying cause is often challenging, this is probably one of reasons explaining the improved survival seen with in-hospital compared with the out-of-hospital CPA. The incidence of CPAs in children is highest in infants, and decreases with age. The majority of CPAs in children are due to respiratory causes. Cardiac causes in children and young adults include a variety of familial, genetic, and acquired conditions. The pathophysiology of cardiac arrests is also now better understood. A large number of biochemical pathways are activated as a result of the CPA. These result in the post-cardiac arrest syndrome, which affects many systems in the body, but in particular the brain, heart, and kidneys.

Dramatic changes took place in the religious sphere during the tumultous final years of Soviet history. Shamsuddin Boboxonov’s unprecedented ouster as mufti in 1989 offered a preview of the confusion that was to come: SADUM’s disintegration into national muftiates for each of the five Central Asian republics took place rapidly, in a climate of ethnic conflict. Though the Central Asian muftiate ceased to exist in 1991, the precedents established by the CRA-SADUM alliance continued to shape relations between Islam and the state in the post-Soviet period. In one important respect, however, those relations have departed dramatically from the Soviet legacy: now that the independent republics have abandoned communism and atheism, little incentive exists for a moderate line toward religion. This explains why state policies toward religion in post-Soviet Central Asia became more repressive after the collapse of the USSR, not less.
